London Design Festival sees launch of Axor One by Hansgrohe

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

What if individual control elements could be eliminated to make room for an uncluttered shower experience? Axor by Hansgrohe has worked on an answer to this question with the London-based design duo Barber & Osgerby.
Axor One — the brand’s first all-in-one interactive shower control element — made its debut at the London Design Festival on September 22 and is a confident, yet unobtrusive statement in the shower. Generously proportioned, but fascinatingly clean, it is a focal point for the senses.

“With Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby we transformed the idea of a central shower control element into an engaging, purely mechanical interface that refines showering into a tactile, precise and responsive practice”, Philippe Grohe, Head of Axor, explains.

“Axor One allows a completely fresh interpretation of water control: by consolidating many individual controls into one simple element, it streamlines both the look and functionality of the bathroom”, according to Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. The possibility to simultaneously turn multiple water outlets on or off with the back of the hand or the elbow makes Axor One a convenient and engaging shower experience.

Temperature is set by turning the central dial; a small lever directly below regulates water volume, and the Eco Mode reduces water consumption up to 50%. The flow of water is activated and deactivated by tapping of the paddles: clear symbols indicate the specific water outlets the user can choose from (e.g. overhead, hand, or side shower). This unification of water outlet activation, water volume regulation, and temperature control, gives a sleek form to a structured function.
With its monolithic but soft form, Axor One creates a new spaciousness in the shower — a pleasant feeling of clarity and tranquility.

Plane surfaces, rounded edges, and an integrated mechanical interface, constitute a clearly structured concealed thermostat that eliminates distraction from a soothing shower experience. The refined proportions, sculpted form and accurate detailing make a timeless statement that merges seamlessly with any bathroom environment. With a variety of special finishes, ranging from subdued chrome to a bold red-gold, Axor One becomes as visible as the user would like it to be.

Axor One will be available in the UK from January 2016

Royal warranted carpet manufacturer Brintons has designed and supplied a bespoke, custom-made carpet to the opulent Beach Rotana hotel in Abu Dhabi to create a royal feel in its luxurious ballroom.Rotana, one of the leading hotel management companies within the Middle East, Africa, South Asia and Eastern Europe, appointed the Kidderminster-based manufacturer to supply its high quality carpet for the 1,100 square-metre Al Thuraya Ballroom, which can accommodate up to 1,200 guests at Rotana’s flagship hotel, Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi.

Brintons has worked with the Beach Rotana, which is ideally located in the centre of Abu Dhabi, for over two years and has supplied carpet to the existing hotel corridors. These designs were chosen from Brintons Art Fusion collection and help accentuate the hotel’s luxurious theme.

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Auchrannie Resort, already an awarding winning destination on the Isle of Arran, now boasts a brand new 3-storey Spa Resort Executive Wing. The 18 executive bedrooms and two suites enhance its existing two hotels, three restaurants, 30 5 star lodges, spas, indoor and outdoor play and adventure centres.

Auchrannie was a perfect brief for Newmor, able to manufacture high performance wallcovering to individual design needs

The new development allowed the team to take a different look to their usual style; offering opulent, contemporary interiors with an atmospheric feel and a quirky connection to the natural environment. A perfect brief for Newmor, able to manufacture high performance wallcovering to individual design needs. The solution was a custom design featuring trees complemented by Arbour a wood grain stocked wallcovering.

It was essential that the wallcoverings were both luxurious and hardwearing. The fabric backed vinyl stylised wood effect was carefully designed to give the impression of rough-hewn wood while at the same time having an ultra-modern metallic feel.

The Arbour design from Newmor is the perfect backdrop for the pods

As well as stunning finishes to all bedrooms, the first two floors feature guest lounges leading to an external balcony. The executive rooms and two executive suites have full use of the resort’s Stromach Lounge, to enjoy complementary snacks and refreshments as well the outdoor hot tub with fabulous views of Glen Cloy. The lounge area in the executive suites come complete with a ‘chill out pod’ — a circular pod inset into the wall where people can recline and relax.

It was essential that the wallcoverings were both luxurious and hardwearing

The Arbour design from Newmor is the perfect backdrop for the pods, its hand drawn detail of wood grain textures, including knots, creates a natural feel whilst maintaining a contemporary look. Richard Small, General Manager at the resort, is delighted: “We are very pleased with the positive feedback we have had so far, guests appreciate the large picture windows, bespoke wall coverings, ambient lighting and sumptuous furnishings throughout.”

Hotel Summit 2015; a trade show with a difference

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Hilton London Wembley, in the shadow of one of the world’s most iconic stadiums, was the backdrop for this year’s Hotel Summit, where more than 50 delegates and 25 suppliers gathered for an afternoon of networking and showcasing the latest products in the hotel industry. Daniel Fountain was on hand to review proceedings.

The Hotel Summit has quickly become one of the more popular events on the conference circuit, and with its networking opportunities, tailor-made itineraries for each delegate and specifically designed meetings for suppliers — it’s easy to see why.

As well as identifying new suppliers that can offer interior design products and facilities management services, in industries as wide ranging as upholstery, lighting, and security systems the delegates enjoyed two seminars – which bookended the networking sessions – from the Society of British and International Design (SBID) President Vanessa Brady and Qbic Hotels MD Julie Fawcett.

Vanessa Brady led the delegates through how to gain more business while investing and strengthening existing contacts with the opening presentation. This was followed at the end of the day by a talk by Julie Fawcett, who explained why OTAs shouldn’t be considered the enemy of hoteliers. Meanwhile, the main chunk of the day – the networking opportunities — enabled suppliers and buyers to get down to the business of exchanging project and product details, forging new connections and sealing deals.

The hotel industry is one of the most competitive in the world. And with so many events within the industry, it can be difficult to decide which ones to attend. The huge exhibitions are always popular, but the endless walking, not knowing who to speak to and no confirmed sell can feel like a waste of time. Unique events like the Hotel Summit are making trade shows a thing of the past.

Unique hotel designs: ‘A Story of Ice and Sand’

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

There are just over three months to go until the 26th ICEHOTEL in Swedish Lapland opens its doors to the public (11 December 2015).And to celebrate, structural plans and unique designs for the hotel have been revealed, by Discover the World, the leading ICEHOTEL experts.

From a life-sized ice elephant and a Russian imperial-inspired theatre set, to a room full of flying sheep and a 1970’s love capsule, 19 uniquely crafted suites will be built. The amount of snow taken to create its 55 rooms, as well as its church and bar, is enough to make a staggering 700 million snowballs (with its frozen chandeliers using over 1000 hand cut ice crystals) taking an astonishing 48,000 hours of labour.

Designers from around the world will be involved in the hotel’s distinctive designs including a team from the UK – architect Matt Chan and dancer/choreographer Annie Hanauer. They are all set to create a Cairn Forest suite; a woodland scene featuring piles of ice cairns which collectively make up towers and arches.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, childhood beach-holiday joy has been brought to life by the Zand Hotel. The project is the brainchild of event organisers at Global PowWow, who spent four weeks building rooms — of which there are 60 in total — as part of a sand sculpture festival in the towns of Sneek and Oss in the Netherlands. Thankfully, not all the furniture is made of sand — as we’re not sure how comfortable a bed made out of sand would be.

The hotel is fully booked for this year, but good news for those adults wanting to relive childhood memories of days out at the beach — the organisers plan on repeating the feat again next year and building similar structures in Germany and right here in the UK.

Kobe UK celebrating 20 years of business

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Kobe UK, the luxury fabric specialist, is celebrating 20 years of supplying UK interior design and soft furnishing customers with its contemporary and classic collections. The company, now known for its iconic ranges such as City Chic, Brissac and Aurora, began in 1995 when Kobe UK became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dutch textiles group Kobefab International, since then the business has gone from strength to strength.

MD David Harris, who has been at the helm of the UK operation for the full two decades, said: “There have been many milestones along the way, but today the company is an established brand in the UK, growing from a very small team to now covering the whole country.”

In 1998 the company took over distribution in Ireland and a few years later established its successful contract sales division. Kobe’s contract fabrics are used to complete major projects from around the world, including the hospitality and healthcare markets.

Supporting the business going forward has been a priority and it has continued to reinforce its contracts team and its sales team, which now operates throughout the UK and Ireland.

However it has not always been good news. In 2010 disaster struck when a fire swept through the company’s head office in Holland. Fortunately, a quick-thinking team working at the site hurriedly setup a temporary warehouse, which meant for its significant customer base, business carried on as usual.

Said David Harris: “It’s been an exciting and sometimes challenging 20 years but we wouldn’t have it any other way. The company has developed considerably, we have a great team, business is still growing and we are looking forward to the next 20 years. I even have my own 50 year milestone this year!”

The company has launched a number of stunning collections over the years including Aurora, Gabra, Nomad, City Chic, Brissac and Wellington. Then in 2013 it launched the Essente brand, a collection of fabrics designed to reach a broader clientele, looking for a cost effective option, with the quality and reassurance of the Kobe name.

Having moved from its beginnings in temporary accommodation on to its Woodley premises, the company is now settled at its headquarters in Crowthorne , Berkshire.

Kobe UK will be showcasing it’s latest collections at Decorex International in September and to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary it is inviting you to meet the team at Stand J22 and have a chance to win one of 20 bottles of Champagne.

Kobe will also be at the Independent Hotel Show in October, the Sleep Show in November 2015 and the January Furniture Show 2016.

First Westminster Hospitality & Tourism Day

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

33 MPs from across the UK took part in a day in Parliament today, Wednesday 16th September, highlighting the importance of the hospitality and tourism industry to the British economy.

The event – which brought together politicians, policy-makers and businesses – was organised to celebrate the contribution the sector makes to Britain’s economic wellbeing. Industry leaders asked the government for policy reforms to help make it more competitive with rival tourist destinations, particularly in Europe.

According to an independent Oxford Economics study commissioned by the British Hospitality Association and launched today, Hospitality is Britain’s fourth largest industry, supporting 14 per cent of total employment and delivering £143bn a year to Britain’s economy. It has also created one in five of all new jobs since 2010.

However VAT is still levied at 20% – almost twice the European average.

No fewer than 25 out of 27 EU countries have reduced rates for hospitality. Industry leaders are campaigning for a lower rate of 5% on hospitality in the UK.

The British Hospitality Association (BHA) – which organised the Westminster Hospitality and Tourism Day – also called on the Government to speed up and simplify the VISA application process to encourage more visitors from growth markets such as China.

They also want to ban ‘Rate Parity’ clauses – which mean online travel agents receive the same rate as guests who book rooms with the hotel itself. They argue that rate parity limits savings that hotels can pass on to guests who decide to book directly.

Ufi Ibrahim, chief executive of the British Hospitality Association told MPs that: “Hospitality is a wealth generator across the country, not just London and the South East, and we can contribute a lot more to this country in new well-paid jobs, exports and increased tax revenue.

“But we need government support to fully unleash our industry’s potential; on tourism VAT, on visas, deregulation, aviation capacity and on creating a fair digital marketplace by banning so-called ‘Rate-Parity’ agreements.”

The day included a Parliamentary reception hosted by Brighton Pavilion MP, Caroline Lucas and Nick Varney, chairman of the BHA and CEO of Merlin Entertainments PLC and a series of meetings between MPs and hospitality business owners and managers.

The day also included a briefing session on the latest BHA-commissioned research by Oxford Economics into the economic contribution of the British Hospitality Industry. The Report finds that:
    • Hospitality is 4th largest industry, delivering £143bn per annum – that’s 10% of gross value added to GDP
    • Hospitality and tourism created 1 in 5 new jobs since 2010 (Hospitality alone has delivered 331,000 new jobs between 2010 and 2015 – accounts for 17% of all new jobs created in the UK
    • And we are well on track to achieving our 2013 agenda to create 300,000 new jobs by 2020
    • Hospitality & Tourism employs 4.49 million people (10% of the whole working population).1 in 10 people work in the hospitality and tourism industry
    • For every 10 direct jobs, the industry creates another 6 in the wider economy
    • 34 per cent of the workforce are under 25 years of age
    • There are 475,000 unemployed 16 – 24 year olds in Britain = nearly 14 per cent of young people under 24 are unemployed
    • This industry will deliver 60,000 apprenticeships, work experiences, and career opportunities for Britain’s young people by the end of 2016 via the Big Hospitality Conversation
    • UK is the 8th largest international tourism destination by visitor numbers – behind France, the USA, Spain, China, Italy, Turkey and Germany (we’ve slipped down the rankings since 2012)

Conran and Partners’ plans for House Hotel and Residence, Bomonti

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Conran and Partners has unveiled its plans for the interior design for an innovative mixed-used development in the heart of Istanbul. Masterminded by development consultants FYP for Turkish developer Yenigün Insaat, this innovative mixed use development comprises 51 hotel rooms and 155 residences, which will both be operated by the House Group. The compact serviced apartments have been strategically designed to maximise on internal space whilst benefitting from the unique offerings of the hotel and residence communal areas. There are also plans for co-working spaces and a fitness and spa facility to complete the lifestyle offerings.

Bomonti, an eclectic and cosmopolitan area, is known for its history of craft and manufacturing ever since the Bomonti Brothers established Turkey’s first commercial beer brewery there over 120 years ago.

    Photos courtesy of conranandpartners.com

We were inspired by this exciting mix of edgy urban atmosphere and bold industrial heritage, which developed into a design approach that is contemporary and strong, with a refined industrial aesthetic.

The layouts, for instance, reflect a modern lifestyle that chooses to dispense with any unnecessary elements and materials and instead focuses on the needs of a contemporary lifestyle.

The base palette is industrial and monochromatic – concrete floors and walls, natural stones and black-framed factory-style glazing –offset by elegant detailing and rich textures of marble and timber to result in a sophisticated modern style that does not rely on the traditional manifestations of luxury.

The softer furniture elements and carefully considered artwork create a homely counterpoint to the base materials and introduce a balanced colour palette to the interior.

Swinging Sixties ibis Styles Birmingham Airport NEC hotel opens

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

With the busiest UK airport and train stations outside of London, Birmingham has been a transport hotspot for decades. The original Mini Cooper was born in Birmingham and was doing laps of spaghetti junction long before it embarked on any Italian jobs. It is from this history that ibis Styles draws reference for the design of the newly opened ibis Styles Birmingham Airport NEC, infused with the retro colour palette of the sixties.Cool greys permeated with orange, turquoise and lime feature heavily throughout the hotel with polka dots adding a playful touch of colour. Lighting and furniture have been designed with historical references to the fashion of the era and spaghetti junction has been reimagined as a design on the carpets whilst vivid prints of industrial Birmingham structures hang on the walls.

The ibis Styles Birmingham Airport NEC offers 166 well-appointed rooms, onsite restaurant, a bar and six meeting rooms. Continuing the theme of transportation into the lounge bar, the area has been styled as an aeroplane wing, perching on diner style seating.

Inge Van Ooteghem, SVP Operations Economy and Budget Hotels, comments: “We are delighted to open ibis Styles Birmingham Airport NEC – a hotel that gives a retro nod to the era when travel was funky and a little bit cheeky too. We want our guests to experience the vibrancy and character of Birmingham from within the hotel walls, whether they are taking off on their holidays or doing business in the city.”

“This is the second new opening for ibis Styles in as many weeks, with a further two hotels coming to Haydock and Barnsley in September. Ibis Styles is a growing economy brand in the UK, which places design and style, alongside comfort and quality, at its heart. It’s always exciting to see how the unique story and personality of each hotel will unfold and be embraced by guests.”

Liverpool’s unique version of The Statue of Liberty planned for River Mersey

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The iconic Liver Bird is the inspiration for the latest design by award-winning architect, David Backhouse. Renowned for creating the Cavern Walks and the Cavern Club in Liverpool, Backhouse has now turned his expertise into giving Liverpool a unique building that sets it apart from the rest of the world.

Standing 100 meters tall and nestled at the entrance to Liverpool in the River Mersey, ‘Homecoming’ – The Statue of Liverpool, is a stunning new 23 storey building, perched in a five storey nest. A split-level restaurant will be located behind the Liver Birds eyes, offering a panoramic view of Liverpool, similar to that of the Statue of Liberty in New York or the Oriental Peal Tower in Shanghai.

The property will be fully self-sustaining with zero energy costs as power will be generated via wind turbines within the ‘wings’ of the structure and tidal turbines underneath the ‘nest’. The bird will also be covered in diamond shaped photovoltaic cells converting solar power into energy.

Tidal experts, engineers and a local river pilot have been consulted regarding the positioning of the project.

David Backhouse and the design team are actively seeking investors to help bring this Liverpool Landmark to fruition and have suggested a range of uses for the development, including a luxury hotel and private apartments, to specialised shopping outlets and creative spaces.

Backhouse says, “This is the culmination of an idea we had nearly 30 years ago now. The concept has never been far from my thoughts throughout my years of working on many prestigious Liverpool-based projects. I’m so pleased now to finally present the idea to both the city, and the world!”

Hamilton Is The ‘Suite’ Choice Of ‘Boutique’ Hotels At Sleep 2015

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Hamilton is set to stand out from the crowd at Sleep 2015. The company is seeing a rise in demand from small to medium ‘Boutique’ hotels for its electrical wiring accessories and Mercury® lighting control and multi-room audio systems – all of which will be showcased at the Business Design Centre 25-26 November 2015.

Boutique Hotels, also referred to as lifestyle or design hotels, are unique in interior design, architecture and theme, and are often historic. Essentially a stay in a Boutique Hotel is a lifestyle experience.

Gavin Williams, Marketing Manager for Hamilton says: “Through partnering with hotel interior designers we are helping them realise their vision – cost effectively. Sourcing the unusual, quirky or period furnishings and accessories is time consuming. But when it comes to electrical wiring accessories we can help save both time and money. Unique items such as special plate finishes/colours or non-standard plate functions can be supplied using Hamilton’s ‘Bespoke’ design service, Savile Row, and larger plate sizes incorporating specified multiple functions can be designed and produced to order.”

Merging the new in-keeping-with the old
Boutique Hotel guests are discerning. For them it is all about the experience: the aesthetics of the environment and high levels of personal service. One thing is for sure, they expect ‘luxurious home comforts’ and that includes access to all of the home technology and entertainment services as standard. Integrating smart technologies sympathetically and seamlessly within older style and heritage projects is key. Hamilton strength is its ability to merge the NEW in a way that’s in keeping with the OLD.

    Anne Boleyn would approve!
Hamilton’s expertise in this area recently proved invaluable during the refurbishment of Anne Boleyn’s guest rooms within a new wing of Hever Castle’s Luxury Bed and Breakfast accommodation – an Edwardian annexe created by William Waldorf Astor, designed in Tudor style.

Hever Castle Project Interior Designer Sarah Clark of Interiors at Nine to Eleven says:
“I was initially drawn to Hamilton for its Mercury® Lighting Control system and range of stunning switch plates & sockets which perfectly suited the needs of this project. However I soon came to appreciate and value the fabulous personal service and consultative approach provided by the Hamilton Team.”

Members of the Team will be available on the stand to discuss the Hever Castle project and other challenging Boutique projects successfully completed during the past 12 months.

    Boot-up in ‘guest’ mode
Expecting guests to compromise on access to technology because they are spending a night in a hotel is no longer an option. It’s expected that iPods/iPhones can be connected to the room’s audio system through USB connections incorporated into the room switch plates. Also the guest room is often used as a remote office so again it’s important they have everything they need from communications technology and functionality within the hotel room such as the USB charger and international sockets, samples of each will be on the stand.

“With our bespoke design and production service and 18 unique ‘designer’ plate collections, available in metal, plastic, wood and even glass finishes – many compatible with the company’s Mercury® lighting control and multi-room audio system – we can deliver a totally co-ordinated look and meet all the needs of virtually any client brief,” adds Gavin.

    Welcomed by BiiD
Having identified its strengths in this sector Hamilton is continuing to develop and grow its product range and breadth of design support services to meet the needs of hotel interior designers and specifiers. Its commitment to the sector and desire to establish even closer working relationships with customers was recently recognised by the British Institute of Interior Design (BiiD), accepting Hamilton as an accredited ‘Industry Partner’.

    Hotel Indigo, York

    Hotel Indigo, York

    793 461 Daniel Fountain

Very often, when out and about reviewing hotels or sifting through property announcements at HotelDesigns HQ, I encounter some variation on that old hospitality cliché: ‘modernity blended with history’- and very often, it’s a lazy and inaccurate description. But every now and again, I have the pleasure of staying in a hotel and a location that epitomises the phrase. The Hotel Indigo in York is one such property.

York is a city I never need a second invitation to visit – with its maze of twisting, cobbled streets, quaint architecture and two millennia of history teeming from its very core – it’s a gold mine for amateur historiographers like myself. So, it was with little hesitation that I made the journey north to review my first Hotel Indigo – the boutique brand of the InterContinental Hotels Group.

Self-styled as ‘the industry’s first branded boutique hotel experience’, Hotel Indigo now has a presence across North America, UK and Europe as well as China and south-east Asia. Each unique property is as individual as its surroundings and attempts to reflect this through its interiors and design. A ‘local slant’ is key to the Hotel Indigo ethos, as is its quirky and contemporary décor. With properties in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Shanghai, I imagine blending this local touch with interesting and modern interiors was a relatively easy task. However, enveloped on all sides by a section of a city with a rich heritage and standing on one of its oldest streets, this process could have proven slightly more difficult for the designers of this York property. Not so.

Yorkshire is well represented in everything from individual items of furniture to the selection of ales in the bar/restaurant on the ground floor. Even the bathroom toiletries have been sourced from Harrogate company H2K, which is just twenty miles from the hotel. And the wonderfully twee touches in the décor – like framed photos referencing the area’s confectionary heritage to the 1893 Kelly’s Directory (the Yellow Pages of its time) printed on bedside lampshades – all give off the boutique vibe whilst fitting in with the Hotel Indigo brand vision.

Being a new-build property, the whole hotel has a clean and vibrant feel from the moment you walk through the door.

    HotelIndigoMontage2

Directly opposite the modest reception desk, the aforementioned bar and restaurant – a franchise of the Yorkshire Meatball Company and with public access to the street outside – serve as the focal point of the hotel’s public space. The confectionary theme is continued here with chuckle-inducing jelly-mould pendant lampshades and Skittles-esque cushions scattered on sofas.

Taking the lift up to room level would mean missing out on the hotel’s spectacular staircase complete with a three-storey well, which adds a touch of grandeur to the journey from check-in to room. The well-lit (and thankfully spacious) corridors are carpeted with a fantastically rich black and white pattern throughout, reminiscent of the great M.C. Escher and works from the optical art movement.

The rooms themselves are blessed with good natural light (if not the best views) from the windows, but are also equipped with generous lighting throughout so there’s never a gloomy corner to contend with. While the colour scheme is muted for the most part, it’s punctuated with sharp, primary-coloured items which definitely adds to the sense of fun.

Both the desk and bedside tables have good socket access and I couldn’t find fault with the king-sized bed with the Egyptian cotton linen, but was slightly disappointed with the amount of wardrobe space on offer.

It’s at this point I will admit that I am guilty of rating an entire hotel experience on the quality of its bathroom space, and Hotel Indigo scores highly here too. The spa-inspired space and its layout are well designed and the team have displayed virtuosity in the contrast of materials used. The absence of a bathtub is more than countered by the walk-in, glass enclosed shower with a rainfall head.

Simply put, a stay here is a pleasure. Whilst Hotel Indigo might be a chain, the rooms and the hotel’s public spaces certainly have their own character and charm filled with endearing local touches.

The designers have done a great job of ensuring the guest doesn’t get the ‘chain hotel’ feeling. They have been able to engender a feeling of a contemporary boutique hotel whilst not neglecting the fact its backdrop is one of the most historic cities in England. The ever-growing popularity of boutique hotels and their strong, overriding identity and ‘sense of place’ has meant the larger chains have had to adapt in a bid to capture some of the market. With its Hotel Indigo brand – and this York property in particular – IHG has proven it understands the market extremely well and has certainly established a solid blueprint for a successful ‘branded boutique’.

As someone who transformed from slightly sceptical of the concept to a fully-fledged convert overnight thanks to this York gem; if you’re not convinced I highly recommend going through the conversion process for yourself.

Moving towards a new ‘English Vernacular’?

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

In recent years, there seems to have been a resurgence in creating quintessentially English interiors. At all levels, hospitality market interior design practices have been producing design solutions that are recognisably within an English tradition.

Whilst I have been used to seeing interiors in South Africa that have married a recognisable South African aesthetic to international influences (Bushmans Kloof, for example), the generation of an English aesthetic has been less identifiable in my homeland.

Englishness is a difficult style to nail down, unlike French styling epitomised for me by the discovery of the Hotel Meurice — no not the one in Paris, but the one in Calais. In Germany too I have found many Gasthaus properties that stylistically could not exist elsewhere. So it goes on throughout Europe, whereas the local English equivalents have been less stylish and more – not to put too fine a point on it – twee, with many simple run down, seedy or knackered.

Meanwhile ‘starchitects’ continue the trend for new builds to be architectural styling porn at the expense of cities having a local identity, with their interiors dominated by their structure. They generally fail to acknowledge location in favour of an androgynous ‘international style’, and are designed from the outside in, the reverse of a good interior, which should always focus on function. This leaves the interior designers attempting the architectural equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig.

In recent years, the English regional market has picked up and we are now seeing the regeneration of identifiably local trends. These when taken together are, for this observer, beginning to create an identifiably localised English design style, which I like referring to as ‘a new English Vernacular’.

A boutique beauty from Wilton Carpets Commercial at the Lake District’s Inn on the Square

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Completely refurbished and reopened in June 2015, the Inn on the Square separates itself from traditional Lake District hotels, instead paying homage to the heritage of the area with a mood that is distinctly contemporary. The family-owned hotel of 34 bedrooms and award-winning steak house restaurant, offers four-star luxury with a laid-back atmosphere. This unique ambience is reflected in the carpet design that blends modern Scandinavian influences with cues from Lake District landscapes – set in a stunning Georgian period interior.

The distinctive style was the vision of husband and wife team, David and Kate Simmons, from Preston-based Frank Whittle Partnership:

“Located at the centre of the bustling market town of Keswick, The Inn on the Square competes with several traditional style hotels all within walking distance, so we wanted it to be unique and to become a destination hotel, rather than just somewhere to stay in the town,” explains Kate Simmons. “The carpet design played a major role in the entire scheme, remaining contemporary but featuring natural and organic influences, perfect for a hotel set within England’s largest national park.”

Kate and David had inspiration for a contemporary leaf design randomised across basement, ground and first floors, reflecting the rich colours of autumnal days in the region, like fallen leaves scattered across the fells. After initial discussions with Kate, Wilton Carpets Commercial designer, Matthew Robinson developed the idea producing a free form design across all three floors using a design based on real leaf structures.

“Matthew developed numerous sketches for us, making the leaves all different sizes and colours, some with fills, some outlined and with different backgrounds to the carpet until we were happy with the overall feel,” continues Kate. “We then worked together on the layout, deciding how it would sit on the basement and ground floors, how it would flow over the stairs to the corridors and round corners. The apparently random nature of the design, without any repeat through the entire layout, is carefully planned, not only to look absolutely striking but also to combat the challenges of the period interior while simultaneously making the most of its distinct features too.”

Without a straight wall in sight, due to the building’s Georgian construction, the overlaying random leaf motif is forgiving of irregularities, unlike a traditional design; eliminating the need for a border, the design is free to run into walls and around the complex layouts without looking disjointed or awkward. In fact, the ‘scattered’ leaves of varying shape, size, fill and colour have the opposite effect, uniting the interior in a carpet that upholds the hotel’s modern styling and Lake District setting.

Matthew Robinson used Wilton Carpets’ Elements palette for colourings on the design. Dramatic fills of gold are balanced with subtle black outlines set against a neutral backdrop. This continues the carpet’s adaptability with a random pixel-like shaded effect in slate – a nod to modern design – on a zinc background that complements perfectly the grey wall panelling and base colours throughout. The ‘pop’ accent gold colour, used as a fill for leaves, is found in furnishings throughout the interior.

For the 34 bedrooms, where six different schemes come into play, Kate Simmons looked for a different design to create segregation from public areas and a sense of a different, more private space:

“We didn’t want to carry on the leaf design into these spaces, but we knew the design should use the same base colours, using highlight shades that matched the feature colours of that scheme. Wilton responded perfectly with an off-kilter stripe, again ideal for the irregular walls of the building,” continues Kate.

Each of the schemes employ the same off-kilter stripe. With highlight colours in the bedrooms sharing the same turquoise and gold influences as elsewhere in the hotel, along with a shared zinc background shade, the bedroom carpets coordinate with the leaf design used elsewhere, creating a strong sense of place, while retaining their independence.

The Lake District Hotels’ commissioned project saw 1,400 square metres of bespoke carpet, woven in a hardwearing and comfortable nine-row construction that gives the right levels of durability for boutique hotels of this size. Made at Wilton Carpets’ Wiltshire production site in a performance 80% pure new wool 20% nylon blend, the carpets will retain their appearance over many years, remaining easy to look after and fighting off signs of wear.

“We’ve worked alongside Wilton Carpets for many years now and had no hesitation in introducing them to the Lake District Hotels group. Since then we have refurbished many bedrooms throughout seven of their hotels in the National Park, with the Inn on the Square our largest project to date. They are delighted with the end result, as we are too,” concludes Kate Simmons.

Waldorf Hilton, London completes £13.5 million renovation to restore ‘1920s elegance’

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

One of London’s most famous and prestigious hotels, the Waldorf Hilton, has put the finishing touches on a £13.5 million hotel-wide renovation. The renovation has restored the hotel’s elegant 1920s Edwardian style, which has made it a favourite with guests from all over the world for more than a century.Situated on the verdant, tree-lined thoroughfare of Aldwych, The Waldorf Hilton opened in 1908 and is a Grade II listed building. Completed over several phases, the hotel-wide renovation encompassed all 298 guestrooms, seven meeting rooms and event spaces, including the iconic Palm Court, Good Godfrey’s Bar, Adelphi Suite and Executive Boardroom, with refreshed interiors complementing the grandeur and grace of the hotel’s striking architecture.

Designers Fox Linton Associates drew upon the glamour of 1920s for inspiration

For the guest rooms, interior designers Fox Linton Associates drew inspiration from the glamour of the 1920s. Style and elegance is reflected in timeless features such as antique brass metalwork, silver-leaf and mirrors whilst a sense of playfulness, frivolity, gentle decadence and attention to detail, bring the Edwardian heritage of the hotel to life.

Pastel colours feature in the guest rooms and bespoke furniture in each room showcases the designers’ attention to detail. Subtle variances in pattern and texture come from Italian leather headboards with antique brass studs, chaise longues and contemporary fabrics that reflect the classic style of the hotels early years with a contemporary twist. Meanwhile, the bathrooms have been elegantly designed with a monochrome palette of white ceramic tiles, black trim and nickel fittings also reflecting the 1920s era.

The simple monochrome finish of the bathrooms is classic 1920s style

The magnificent Adelphi Suite function space has been given a new ‘champagne elegance’ colour palette and now boasts stunning bespoke chandeliers with 1920s flute glass shades. The original wall lights have also been restored to match, whilst fan designs, popular in the era, are reflected in the carpet design and curtain trim. Modern technology has not been forgotten with the new suite benefitting from a state-of-the-art architectural and lighting system.

Originally the gentlemen’s smoking room and bar of the hotel, the beautiful listed Executive Boardroom has been restored and converted to a classical boardroom. With its traditional fireplaces and oil paintings, this room is a unique and original space for private dining and smaller meetings.

The traditional public spaces have also been given a revamp as part of the £13.5 million renovation

A hotspot for dancing and socialising since the hotel opened in 1908, the famous Palm Court has been lovingly restored to its former Edwardian glory. All features of the unique and grand centrepiece ballroom have been brought back to life, including the historic black clock, lanterns, stunning columns, cornicing and balustrades. The Palm Court is the dramatic stage for a monthly Afternoon Tea Dance, complete with contemporary afternoon tea and traditional ballroom music, as well as a monthly Tango Supper, hosted by professional Argentine tango dancers Leonardo Acosta and Tracey Tyack-King.

Good Godfrey’s Bar and Lounge opened its doors in 2011 to become a much-loved part of the hotel. The brand new interior features large antiqued mirrors and a bar with illuminated marble, chrome and granite elements. Proudly taking its name from Howard Godfrey, the handsome and talented bandleader of the Waldorf house band in the 1920s, Good Godfrey’s is open all day, serving breakfast, lunch and a variety of tantalising plates to accompany the bold selection of cocktails in the evening.

Alison Palin, general manager, said: “Every element of this landmark refurbishment has been taken into careful consideration. The attention to detail to ensure that the feel and grandeur of the 1920s remains instilled in the iconic hotel has been top priority — it first opened its doors in 1908 and, although times have changed, the style and elegance of days gone by has remained for guests to enjoy. The Waldorf Hilton has been a stalwart fixture of the West End, providing guests with superb service and elegance, for 107 years. This renovation will ensure that it continues to do so, in true Edwardian style, for many years to come.”

Tripling in size, the 1,750 square meter space will host banquets, parties, product launches, weddings and festivals for up to 1,400 people, subject to layout. The venue will also feature an attractive and sustainable landscape as well as offering views of the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah.

Kameha Grand Zurich’s hotly anticipated ‘Space Suite’ set for October opening

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The Kameha Grand Zurich Hotel, Autograph Collection’s first property in Switzerland, is set to launch a cutting-edge Space Suite designed by German artist Michael Najjar in October. The suite will immerse guests in an ‘out of this world’ experience with features such as universe motifs, a zero gravity bed and steam bath with artistic views into space. The Space Suite finds perfect alignment with the sensory experience flowing throughout the hotel.

The creative flair behind the Space Suite stems from Michael Najjar – a visual artist, adventurer and future astronaut who has undergone intensive cosmonaut training in Russia. Najjar will also be the first contemporary artist in space as one of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic Pioneer Astronauts.

The idea behind the Space Suite is to immerse guests – or ‘crew members’ – in the atmosphere of a space station, tapping into various elements of perception to enliven the experience. Quirky features include an automated female voice inspired by John Carpenter’s science fiction film ‘Dark Star’ to welcome the crew member in 8 different variations, spot lights inspired by rocket engines and a space glove where crew members can place their phones or key cards.

The bed will also be designed in a way to look like it is floating, while the mattress is shaped as a black rectangle to reflect the monolith from 2011: A Space Odyssey. The steam bath follows through with the Universe motif and features a small window which presents a view into space and down on Earth. Crew members can also relax using an iPod, extensive library and Apple TV filled with information in German and English related to the topic of space. Najjar’s artistic influence can also be seen with four acrylic platforms holding mock ups of historic rockets and space ships and three artworks by Najjar himself.

Founder & CEO of Kameha Grand Zurich, Carsten K. Rath, commented: “Moving between fiction and reality is a key feature of the Kameha brand, the Space Suite epitomises the ability of Kameha Grand Zurich to blur the lines between the two, creating an incredible design destination.”

The galaxy getaway 2 night package starts from more than £1,280 per night. This includes B&B accommodation in the space suite, space amenities on arrival, 1.5 hours bodyflying/1 hour flight simulation in an a A320, personalised future in space book by Michael Najjar, opportunity to visit Michael Najjar’s Berlin studio and meet him and a designer art gift to take home.
