Hotel Designs‘ premium networking event, MEET UP London, took place on April 24, 2023 at Upstairs at The Department Store, Brixton. Stay tuned to hear more about the 2024 edition of MEET UP London.

The 2023 edition of MEET UP London welcomed interior designers, architects, hoteliers and suppliers to the trendy neighbourhood of Brixton. Following last year’s event, which saw more than 200 industry creatives mingle with one another, MEET UP London’s sold out event bridged the gap between designers, architects, hoteliers, developers and suppliers alike.

“The venue is everything for events like MEET UP London, and we don’t choose them lightly,” said Hamish Kilburn, Editor of Hotel Designs who will host the event. “We always like to go a little off-piste, and, for us, Upstairs at The Department Store offered the right balance of space and quirky atmosphere. Paired with the fact that that it has been designed consciously by a studio that we share many values with, we were struggling to find reasons why the 2023 edition of MEET UP London wouldn’t take place in Brixton.”

The building itself that shelters Upstairs at The Department Store, designed by the team at Squire & Partners, was unveiled in 2017. Upstairs forms part of Squire and Partners’ redevelopment of the Department Store, and creates a new nearly 500-square-metre rooftop social space with a bar, lounge area and dining spaces for the practice’s staff and guests, as well as a landscaped roof terrace.

The roof design is based on a series of copper clad roof lanterns supported by a solid oak frame which aligns with the existing building structure. An external terrace, accessed through full height Crittall glazed doors, runs the length of the building and is landscaped with steel planters containing a variety of plants and trees.
