Forbes Travel Guide has bestowed Five Stars, its highest designation on both Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane and the Spa at Four Seasons for the fifth consecutive year, making the hotel the only establishment in the city to ever achieve ten stars.
Commenting on the news, General Manager John Stauss said: “This is once again an outstanding honour for us all here at Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane. We could not be more delighted to be the only Hotel in London to have ever been awarded 5 stars for both the Hotel and Spa from the prestigious Forbes Travel Guide. We look forward to continuing to create incredible experiences for our guests”
Established London since 1970, Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane reopened in 2011 after an extensive two-year transformation. Its crowning glory is the Spa at Four Seasons, located on the 10th floor atop the Hotel with sweeping views of the city.
Star ratings are awarded by a team of anonymous professional inspectors. In the words of Forbes Travel Guide, its inspectors “travel the world to assess hotels, restaurants and spas against up to 800 objective standards.” Star ratings ultimately emphasise quality of service. Five-Star properties are defined as “outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities.”
Worldwide, 30 Four Seasons hotels and resorts earned the coveted Five-Star designation in 2017, setting the record for the highest number of Five-Star awards given to a single brand in the history of the Forbes Travel Guide Ratings.
Inge Moore and her London-based design team have completed the refurbishment of 48 guestrooms and suites in one of the world’s most iconic hotels – Cape Town’s Belmond Mount Nelson. The design intent was to recreate the original spirt of the grand old hotel, which opened in 1899 and was said at the time to be as elegant as any fine London hotel, while updating it in such a way to engage today’s connoisseur travellers and lovers of exceptional hotels.
Inspired by Heritage Capetonian heritage and influences were therefore the foundation to the designers’ thinking and this was a narrative that proved to open up layers of design opportunity. Once, seafarers from around the globe discovered the Cape and made it home, embracing what she had to offer and combining this with what they had brought from their previous lives. Local materials, rustic timbers, beads and clay brought together with sparkling crystal, silver cutlery and fine bone china created a new vernacular that uniquely belonged in the Cape. It was this mixing of the old and the new, the refined and the artisanal that Inge has translated into the refurbished guestrooms. Importantly, just as the “Nellie” has always been, the redesigned rooms are comfortably residential in feel. For the many loyal guests who return year-after-year, the ambience of their room will be reassuringly familiar while there will be much to discover that is new and enchanting.
“The Mount Nelson is one of a small handful of hotels that epitomise the inheritance and soul of their location, so they must be subtly moved on within the continuum of their beloved personality,” says Inge.
Connected with Nature The gardens, lovingly tended and matured over the decades since the hotel first opened, as well as the breath-taking view of Table Mountain mean that Mount Nelson Hotel is the place to contemplate both the majesty of untamed nature and the beauty of man’s work with nature. The redesign celebrates both. Windows and casings have been restored and painted white, while the new drapery pelmets are smaller than before, effectively opening up the windows and framing the views. Guests can now better connect with what is outside and take the emotion with them as they relax inside. The bed is the centrepiece of each room, focused on the view and, at the foot of each bed, there is a local ‘riempies bank’ – the bench introduced to the Cape by the early settlers and locally made. Each room has a “chair to dream in”, a deeply comfortable armchair placed at a vantage point to soak up the panorama and allow the guest a place to slow down and feel what is important to them, be it to think, read or just to be.
Other heirloom furniture includes dark timber tables and cabinets with brass and leather detailing, while some furniture has been specially designed as a modern take on traditional pieces. There are idiosyncratic pieces, such as a beaded mirror, introduced to balance the collection and ensure the rooms retain an air of light hearted residential randomness. In re-planning the rooms, wardrobe space has become as generous as each room allows to meet the needs of the many guests who stay for a week or more.
All materials are classic, timeless and locally sourced. Originally, the hotel had timber flooring. Now, new oak flooring has been introduced into some suites, scattered with rugs crafted by local carpet weavers. Natural leather and linen abounds and antiqued and bevelled mirror reflects the sparkle of crystal and the sunshine dancing through the room. Drapery is soft and calming in tone, locally embroidered with a flower motif to bring a biophilic context – a love of life and things natural and hand-made – to the design. The guestrooms are light and airy on sunny days but they will also be cosy and cocooning when the sea mists and rain roll in. “They are rooms for slow living, a place to nest and connect with one’s emotions,” says Stan Chan, a senior member of the design team.
Telling the Story through Art Artwork is a major part of the experience and the rooms have been lovingly accessorised with collections of objects and over-scaled paintings curated by Janine Bath in collaboration with Inge. All of the art is by local artists, some is contemporary and some depicts the beautiful landscapes of this part of the world in a new way.
“I think that art in hotels is either just decorative or it has real meaning – there is nothing in-between,” says Inge. “When we have the opportunity to develop art with local artists, it creates the meaning of the project and sets the tone. For Mount Nelson, I wanted to celebrate the amazing Cape and bring this into the hotel.”
The new artworks have joined many fine existing pieces which have been re-framed in a contemporary manner, complimenting the traditionally classic images of landscapes and flowers. Guestroom corridors have been transformed with new art offering a journey through the work of some of Cape Town’s most interesting established and budding artists, combined with the existing collection. The introduction of additional chandeliers and crystal wall lights provides new sparkle as well as more light, the tones of paint replicate heritage colours favoured in domestic settings in the late 19th century and a new sisal-inspired carpet hints at the hard-wearing floor coverings of the turn of the century.
“I want guests to feel like they are walking through the corridors of a beloved aunt’s amazing home,” concludes Inge.
1 Hotels has opened the doors of its third property and first ground-up development, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. Remaining true to 1 Hotels founder Barry Sternlicht’s core philosophy; ‘the world around us is beautiful, and we want to keep it that way.’ The property cultivates the best of eco-conscious design, sustainable architecture, cause-oriented partnerships, and unrivaled service.
Situated at Pier 1, just south of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, in Brooklyn Bridge Park with sweeping waterfront views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge was developed by a joint venture partnership between Starwood Capital Group and Toll Brothers City Living, and it was designed by New York-based architecture studio, INC Architecture & Design.
The property features 194 guest rooms, including 29 two-to-six-bedroom suites and The Riverhouse, its Presidential Suite, with most rooms offering panoramic views of the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York City skyline. The project also includes the adjoining new condominium, Pierhouse, which consists of 106 townhome-style residences spread across two waterfront buildings and is sustainably and beautifully designed by Marvel Architects.
The lobby of 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge opens to a dramatic 25-foot green wall, featuring steel grating covered in hand-placed plants and creeping vines that will evolve over time, created by landscape architecture firm, Harrison Green. A two-story industrial spiral staircase is punctuated by a sculpture of obsidian rock boulders wrapped in hand-dyed rope by Rachel Weiss. The dwellings are complemented by a 4,000 square-foot rooftop, nine-treatment room Bamford Haybarn Spa (opening in June 2017), a state- of-the-art fitness centre, a yoga and barre studio operated by POE Yoga, two restaurants, an intimate 10th floor lounge, a 50-seat screening room, and lobby cocktail service.
“Confronted with how far Americans were lagging behind in changing our consumption habits, I created 1 Hotels to show sophisticated travelers that they can do good, live well, and connect with both the world and the community around them,” said Barry Sternlicht, 1 Hotels Founder and the Chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group. “Today, with the opening of 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, my vision is now realised. We were able to select every material and develop mindfully, yet the space’s main purpose remains to serve, entertain and inspire with some of the best amenities found in the New York hospitality market.”
Narrated by Nature The 10-storey hotel occupies Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85-acre beautification project that stretches 1.3 miles along the East River waterfront. The hotel project originally began in late-2011, however when Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast in 2012, 1 Hotel’s architectural drawings for the Brooklyn Bridge property had just been completed. Due to the damage and destruction, the team was informed the waterfront zoning had changed, requiring 1 Hotels to raise the building by three feet along with other code changes such as relocating mechanical equipment to the roof. Meanwhile, they could not raise the overall height of the building, which triggered a massive redesign effort.
Rather than whitewashing the delay and changes caused by Sandy, the 1 Hotels team opted to honor the force of nature by tapping Olivié Ponce, an artist and creator in Bushwick, Brooklyn, to paint a watermark in remembrance of Hurricane Sandy along the walls of the corner suites.
Committed to sustainability and preserving the environment, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge was built under LEED® guidelines and underscores the following efforts: – The design of the hotel features a 54 percent ratio of regional and reclaimed materials, including original heart pine beams from the former Domino Sugar Factory, walnut from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and pine flooring from the Old Crow Distillery in Kentucky. – The hotel will eventually boast a LEED Dynamic Plaque™ which will measure and display the building’s eco-conscious practices in real time. – 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge operates a rain-water reclamation system that will reduce storm water runoff into neighboring water streams by more than 50 percent prior to the site development. The water collected will irrigate the park during summer months. (Roughly 5,000 cubic feet of water is projected to come from the hotel.) – The property uses 100 percent wind power energy. – The hotel features low-energy light bulbs, a Triple Clear water purification system, in-room recycling bins, and fresh dining offerings. – 1 Hotels has committed to donating a percentage of sales from in-room dining and goodthings (the hotel’s mini bar) to Action Against Hunger, a global humanitarian organisation that takes decisive action against the causes and effects of hunger. – The hotel features a nature-driven art collection, including a textured rubber sculpture, “All OVEREACHOTHER,” created by Jarrod Beck from massive rubber pieces of roofing that were stripped from a big box retailer’s roof during a tornado that touched down unexpectedly in Utica (Upstate New York) in the summer of 2014.
Rooms & Suites with a Lady Liberty View The interiors of the 194 guest rooms and suites were designed to honor the historical significance of one of world’s busiest waterways—the East River. The most stunning feature is a sleek floor-to-ceiling sliding window that transforms the guestroom into an open-air den with skyline views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Furnishings include a porous stone-looking table of composite wood, leather chairs and pendant leather lampshades. Many of the design details in the rooms are by local artisans, from the “crate” inspired, open-slatted wood closets, corrugated leather headboards, to the Fresnel glass light fixtures.

Amsterdam has welcomed a new headliner as Sir Adam took to the decks at the city’s landmark A’DAM Toren for its official opening. Drawing inspiration from its creative neighborhood, the hotel perfectly combines first-class musical credentials with its own inimitable brand of artful luxury.
For Sir Adam’s visual identity, renowned New York-based design studio ICRAVE was responsible for creating an environment that reflects the raw power and musicality of the space it inhabits. Embracing the original structure of the tower, exposed concrete pillars and ceilings frame the interiors, while floor-to-ceiling windows allow the city’s iconic skyline to take center stage.
“Sir Adam is like Amsterdam: cool, edgy, creative, culturally-rich, a little off-beat— but always interesting,” says Liran Wizman, CEO of Europe Hotels Private Collection. “Sir Adam’s cutting-edge design combined with the innovative lifestyle programming of the A’DAM Toren is committed to fun and will bring a new dimension to the Amsterdam hotel scene.”
Award winning designers ICRAVE were entrusted with the design of Sir Adam’s 108 luxurious guestrooms, which are dotted with curated works from local artists, and custom-made furniture and lighting. Elements such as a Crosley Cruiser record player and mirrors etched with song lyrics nod to the hotel’s achingly cool musical neighbors such as Sony and Gibson. Bathrooms are outfitted in calacatta tile and feature rainfall showers and signature DEAD CLEAN amenities. Corner rooms also boast full-length windows overlooking the capital’s historic center and pulsating port.
Rejecting the concept of the traditional and staid hotel lobby, Sir Adam introduces The Butcher Social Club, a “living lounge” that comprises an oh-so-cool gourmet burger joint, an island bar with live DJ sets, and a river terrace with mobile bar. Featuring a two-storey living green wall and dotted with original artworks, game tables, and swing seats, the open, flowing space is a versatile and eclectic spot for guests and locals alike.
On the mezzanine overlooking The Butcher Social Club, music junkies will truly find their tribe at The Hub, a co-working space-meets-concept store. Sir Adam’s Music Library is also on hand to ensure the party never stops, featuring a curated collection of new and exclusive tracks all accessible by Bluetooth.
From here, a spiral staircase ascends to the Beergarden, a rooftop drinking den that serves Amsterdam’s best craft beers amid lush, landscaped greenery and sculptures. Boasting a panoramic vista over the city, the sky-high space is sure to play host to the capital’s hottest events, accommodating up to 200 guests.

Situated close to the beachfront and Abell Point Marina, Mantra Club Croc is housed in a traditional Queenslander-style building, offering a glimpse into the region’s past, contrasted by its modern accommodation and facilities.
Guests can now experience stylish accommodation with coastal inspired décor, a range of new and improved guest amenities such as a large lagoon pool with adjoining spa and lush tropical gardens, and locally-inspired cuisine at the hotel’s new contemporary poolside restaurant and bar.
In addition to the refurbishment of all 160 guest rooms, the restaurant and bar, common areas and leisure facilities, the upgrade also includes an executive makeover of the hotel’s conference centre, which accommodates events from 20 to 200 delegates with a comprehensive range of facilities.
Mantra Club Croc General Manager Luke Harley said the hotel’s rebranding marks the conclusion of the hotel’s multi-million dollar refurbishment program.
“The refurbishment has breathed new life into the much-loved hotel and has brought it up to the premier Mantra brand standards,” said Mr Harley.
Originally opened 30 years ago in 1987 and now meticulously restored and refurbished, Mantra Club Croc is an important property, not just for Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, but also for the international Mantra brand.
Mantra Club Croc is Mantra Group’s third Whitsundays property, joining Mantra Boathouse Apartments and Peppers Airlie Beach.
Think of that radius and you likely imagine yourself still amongst the concrete jungle of Greater London. But with The Grove in mind, it’s time for a re-think. This 18th century country estate replete with championship golf course and world-class spa is as far removed from the hustle and bustle of the capital as is possible to imagine.
The historic mansion, formerly the family seat of the Clarendon earldom and which forms only part of The Grove’s offering, has a storied past – having at various points in time been a girls’ boarding school, a health centre and a riding school. These days, it’s better-known as a haunt for the famously wealthy and wealthily famous. But all of that’s to ignore its sublime mix of the traditional and contemporary – or as interior design director Martin Hulbert calls it; ‘grand and groovy’. For the most part, he’s done a good job of capturing both.
The luxury hotel is split into two very distinct (perhaps too distinct) parts – the original mansion and the new wing – and Hulbert’s latest work at The Grove has been concentrated on revisiting the event spaces, which within the modern West Wing definitely lean towards his ‘contemporary and groovy’ ethos. More than a decade on from his original vision for the 5-star luxury resort, Hulbert’s design group Martin Hulbert Design (MHD) has incorporated a two-fold brief of revamping and reinvigorating existing spaces with reconfiguring and reimagining to give each a unique identity.
Of the venue, Hulbert himself says: “The Grove is an incredibly inspiring place for special events, full of wit and flair, wonderfully unexpected and naturally inspired – the original interiors had lasted really well, they just needed a shot in the arm, something to push them forward into the future.
“Coming back to The Grove, we knew that it still had to be quirky and interactive, but things have changed in the last 15 years, people now want a beautiful space to work with,” he adds.
With the new suites – Cedar, Amber and Ivory – he has given the people exactly what they want. The two separate units of Amber and Ivory both now have a dedicated entrance with their own reception desks. Artwork plays an extensive role in the décor of the newly imagined suites; with much of it commissioned especially. What impresses me most is the way the feel of the spaces is maintained however they are used, with the flexibility of the spaces based on guests’ requests having also been well thought through in the design process.
The jewel in the crown of The Grove’s spaces, however, is the oval-shaped pavilion that houses the Cedar Suite – the first time MHD has led the architectural process. With the structure jutting out into the hotel’s gardens, Hulbert has incorporated the natural light from them perfectly with the walls of the pavilion being formed of floor-to-ceiling glass and its eco-green-roof. Inside, the wooden floor is outshone by a ceiling of what I’m told are ‘acoustic leaves’ – inspired by those in the Royal Albert Hall. For an event space, it makes for a refreshingly welcome visual treat.
From the pavilion, the Cedar Suite extends into the main building – with a new private entrance. The entrance canopy has also been specially designed, using Verdigris copper, uniting the spaces. And every element is bespoke, either commissioned by, or designed by, MHD. In the centre of the entrance room is a working sculpture – creating a focal point – namely a vast steel table, suspended between two steel columns, which moves up and down using a series of weights and pulleys. The result is a multitude of options: a table for dinner, a cocktail bar, a centrepiece to cover in flowers or a canopy to dance underneath, setting the elegant yet industrial feel that is evident throughout. And this is what Hulbert has done well with these spaces; there is a definite minimalist blend between industrial chic and natural inspiration, which gives The Grove a uniqueness in selling the spaces over other venues.
After my tour, I get a chance to check out the hotel’s renowned Sequoia spa, which itself has also recently been renovated. It is a spectacular example of a hotel wellbeing complex; being both state-of-the-art and thoroughly well-designed. During a short show-round, I’m told it has recently been recognised by the Good Spa Awards and it’s easy to see why.
I check into my Deluxe room in the more modern west wing – housing 191 of the hotel’s rooms – and am struck immediately by the excellent size of the room, which means having everything required of a room without it feeling cluttered; followed closely by the stunning views over the grounds from my balcony window. The nature-inspired design seen throughout the public spaces downstairs is prevalent in the rooms, with autumnal browns, golds and yellows strongly featured throughout.
The choice of furniture and textural finishes to the room are of an extremely high quality. The bathroom is just as luxurious, with a free-standing roll-top bathtub and a separate shower unit; the artwork and colour scheme continuing the theme from the living area. The workspace is suitably supplied with power sockets; the 50-inch smart, plasma TV is well placed; and if there was one negative to mark it was the modest wardrobe space – only an issue if more than one person was staying in the room.
Editor’s note: The aesthetics of these rooms – while clean, modern, defined and unfussy – might not be to everyone’s taste for a ‘country retreat’. For a more period, rustic and ornate feel, one of the 26 rooms in the original mansion might better suit this remit. The overtly contemporary elements of the west wing aren’t dominant here, instead rooms retain a traditional finish with antiques, deeper hues and opulent fabrics.
On my way down to dinner, I notice how much artwork plays a role in giving The Grove an edge. Even dotted around amongst the corridors, stairways and outdoor grounds are eccentric, conversation-starting fixtures and pieces – from modern representations of Margaret Thatcher to ornate chandeliers to black-and-white photography of giraffes – which gives off just the right amount of edginess. Indeed, in a nod to Hulbert’s philosophy of blending contemporary with traditional, the lounges and the fine-dining offering Colette’s – the ‘heart’ of the Mansion – retain the character and tradition with a period-style feel, grand ceilings and elegant furniture, while The Glasshouse and its connecting bar definitely represent the sleek modernity, with up-to-the-minute décor of blacks, reds and whites; while the gastro-pub-style Stables sits somewhere comfortably between the two.
I had heard of The Grove before my stay. Afterwards, I can now express first-hand why this is a unique venue. The levels of service are as expected from a 5-star hotel. The standard of the interiors, the amenities and produce cannot be faulted. But the dichotomous design approach in respecting the old and embracing the new makes this a ‘country estate’ with a difference, and a very good one at that.
Perhaps these dual personalities – you could stay in either section and rarely interact with the other – could bleed into each other slightly more without such stark division to truly show off the ‘grand and groovy’ ethos more seamlessly. Or perhaps that’s just me being too pedantic. In any case, kudos Mr. Hulbert, this is fine work…

Programme and modularise an entire building? In the future, this will be common practice as digital construction is one of the most important developments in the industry.
“Building information modelling” (BIM) is a method with tremendous potential: comprehensive databases of information enable the planning, construction and operation of a building, both in the digital and real world. BIM can also be used by companies working in the sanitary, heating and air-conditioning sector.
Duravit is now expanding its BIM data portfolio (so-called Revit files) and has joined the BIMobject® global network. On the BIMobject® website and on its own professional portal pro.duravit.co.uk, Duravit offers all the necessary BIM files to download for architects, planners and the sanitary, heating and air-conditioning trade. Joining BIMobject® has enabled the designer bathroom manufacturer to hugely expand its offering. And this is set to continue: “In the next few years, the BIM file portfolio is to be expanded continuously”, says Albrecht von der Groeben, Chief of International Sales, Duravit AG.
Quality assurance and transparency Digital planning that also includes the construction and operation of the building project enables exact and more comprehensive quality assurance. This should lead to greater transparency in the construction phase and, later, to lower operating and maintenance costs. So-called integral planning based on the BIM method is already required for public projects in the USA, UK and Spain.
As providing the best possible support for all kinds of bathroom planning is part of the Duravit commitment to its customers, the designer bathroom manufacturer is now making more than 150 BIM files available on its own professional portal pro.duravit.co.uk and on the BIMobject® network. For years, Duravit, one of the first manufacturers in the sanitary sector to do so, has been offering a huge portfolio of planning data (dxf, dwg) and now also BIM files to download from pro.duravit.co.uk.
Three-dimensional product visualisation The BIM method enables the presentation of Duravit products in various degrees of detail. In addition to the graphic and planning possibilities, the file also contains product information, such as the name, article number and dimensions. Thanks to 2D and 3D visualisations of the products, the files permit precise design and modelling of the bathroom in building projects.
The provision of this large volume of BIM files on pro.duravit.co.uk and BIMobject® expands the Duravit service offering and enables optimum bathroom design and realization – even in complex bathroom projects. With this step, the designer bathroom manufacturer is promoting the development of integral planning in the modern construction industry. At the same time, the company is consolidating its position as a reliable partner for architects and property developers and this is reflected in numerous international projects. These include hotels, such as the Alpina Gstaad, large-scale projects, such as the Burj Khalifa, The Opus by Zaha Hadid or public buildings, such as the new Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Duravit’s international project management covers more than 130 countries and offers professional support in project planning and implementation.

Es Saadi, which means “The Happy One”, was created by Jean Bauchet and his wife in 1966, artists and owners of the Moulin Rouge and Casino de Paris. It has been in the Bauchet-Bouhlal family for three generations, run with passion and dedication.
Located in the heart of the ‘Golden Triangle’ of Marrakech, in the quiet residential district of Hivernage and facing the snowy summits of the Atlas. Es Saadi is an oasis of splendour, mixing luxury, refinement and Moroccan tradition. Surrounded by eight hectares of majestic gardens, planted with orange trees, bougainvillea, roses, palm trees, banana trees and has a “lagoon” swimming pool of 2400 m2 with a circular bar immersed in water.
The Palace is a majestic building and offers 92 suites, 10 private villas around the gardens and 8 Ksars. All suites overlook the garden and have views of the Atlas Mountains. The furniture is built in accordance with this tradition. The 3,000 m2 Palace Spa, built around a 100-year-old eucalyptus, offers a unique wellness experience, offering traditional and technical care, signature massages, chronotherapy and also daily yoga for maximum relaxation and serenity.
On the third floor, the restaurant ‘La Cour des Lions’ is a perfect fusion of modernity and traditional, in an oriental palace, offering its guests a panoramic view of the park and menu, elaborated by the chef Fatéma Hal, honouring the forgotten traditional dishes.
Culture plays a large part of Es Saadi’s charm which the hotel hosting frequent events, such as exhibitions, auctions, theatre, etc. The hotel also exhibits Madame Elisabeth Bauchet-Bouhlal’s stunning collection of Moroccan paintings and contemporary art for all to enjoy.
In 2017, the hotel will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and the Palace’s 10th. For this monumental occasion, to be recognised in the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2017 is an honour and a great reward.

In line with the digital transformation of the hospitality industry and the brand’s commitment to providing guests with the most innovative products, IBEROSTAR Hotels & Resorts launched its newIBEROSTAR APP application, a phone app for guests that will enable them to enjoy their experience at the hotel to the fullest.
The Majorca-based chain is constantly evolving and continues to invest in the improvements of its products and services to offer the best experience to all its guests. This effort is seen in projects such as the development of the new app, opening new channels of communication between the hotel and its guests.
The new tool is an app designed and developed entirely by the company and will therefore not depend on other products on the market. The platform will be open to future innovations, and has the capacity to incorporate new functions such as opening room doors or as a payment platform, positioning it at the forefront of the industry and as a unique benefit for Iberostar guests.
Designed to make the browsing, search and booking process simpler and more efficient, as well as enabling guests to select the experiences they wish to enjoy during their stay at the hotels, the IBEROSTAR APP includes:
Three intuitive sections including bookings and access to the web check-in service that will make the arrival procedure even faster and more convenient
The IBEROSTAR Experience, includes an interactive map that provides guests with access to all the hotel’s services and facilities, as well as full details of the gastronomy options, from booking a table at any of the restaurants or consulting the room service menu and ordering dinner to their room
The e-concierge function, whereby users can contact the hotel staff at any time, and employees can chat with guests in real time and resolve their needs and requests. The app also offers users the chance to make the most of their stay by taking advantage of services such as the late check-out, luggage storage or even checking courtesy room availability
The app also includes a timeline indicating the various events and activities available on-site each day. Users will have the option to save these activities on their mobile calendar and can share on social media, providing a global view of everything that is happening at the hotel in real time
With the launch of this new app, the three stages of Iberostar guests’ travel experience are covered: ‘before’ with the online booking and check-in options; ‘during’, thanks to the wide range of services available and important guest information; and ‘after’, as the app is also a new lasting communication channel between the company and its customers.
The app has already been tested at ten Iberostar hotels in Spain and the Caribbean and will gradually be incorporated into the company’s other hotels during 2017. Iberostar APP is available in Spanish and English and can be download for free through App Store and Google Play.

“We set out to make this new collection our first focused solely on inspirational design and the result doesn’t disappoint,” says Damian Roscoe, head of creative, on the latest collection from Wilton Carpets. “Inspired by a natural aesthetic with an emphasis on textures and layers, Ethereal delights in the beauty of decay on a backdrop of classically beautiful pattern,” he adds.
With worn Persian effects, deconstructed and broken patterns and tattered, layered florals; Ethereal is certainly a collection of the moment. Capturing an aesthetic that is both intimate and beautiful, it is the first in the new Designer Collection series from Wilton Carpets. A personal expression of Damian’s craft, Ethereal represents an exciting step for Wilton Carpets.
James Sprint, CEO of Wilton Carpets, comments: “Clearly inspirational, this new collection is the first to truly show the creativity of our designers without the usual practical limitations, such as designing for a particular location, and the results are astounding. With Ethereal, we are truly embracing our status as a design-focused carpet manufacturer. It is a range that marks our intention to become famed for carpet design at the top of its game.”
Designed and made in Britain, each Ethereal carpet is crafted in a high-quality 80/20 wool blend and can be specified in any quality. With the ability to adapt any of the seven woven axminster designs in a colourway suited to your interior, this is a collection that offers huge potential for designers looking to strike out with statement carpet.
The massive DoubleTree by Hilton New York – Times Square West, designed by Gene Kaufman Architect, has opened at 350 West 40th Street, between 8th and 9th avenues.
At more than 200,000 square feet and offering 612 rooms, the towering 35-storey DoubleTree is the largest hotel Gene Kaufman Architect has ever designed and the largest to open in New York City in many years. Its arrival follows the groundbreaking, in November, of another enormous Times Square-area hotel designed by the firm, a 518-rooom, 35-story Hyatt Place at 350 West 39th Street.
The new DoubleTree sports a dramatic façade. A red brick masonry street wall wraps around a courtyard that transitions to a setback tower. The tower’s slate blue windows and metal work take advantage of the uninterrupted western exposure to capture the illumination of the sunsets.
Said Gene Kaufman, founder and principal of Gene Kaufman Architect: “We are tremendously proud of the DoubleTree. It is not only our biggest hotel project ever, but the final touch for a block that we have helped to transform from a backwater into a fully integrated part of the bustling Times Square area.”
As the westernmost hotel on 40th Street the DoubleTree has upper-story guest rooms that offer unparalleled views of the Manhattan skyline, as does the hotel’s 4,000-square-foot Lovage Rooftop & Indoor Lounge. This dramatic glass-enclosed space boasts 17-foot floor-to-ceiling windows 36 stories above Times Square.
Gene Kaufman Architect’s interiors group, led by Natalia Tordorova, designed Lovage, which has a custom laser-cut mercury mirror brick wall, chainmail columns, walnut herringbone-and-polished cement floors, and chairs in stroke-painted velvet upholstery and Christian Lacroix fabrics.
The interiors group also designed Magnolia Restaurant, a ground floor American bistro and bar with an expansive bar and 6,000 square feet of interior and exterior dining space. White brick, natural textiles, rich wood and polished brass are illuminated by sphere pendant lighting and complemented by camel-brown leather upholstery, basket-weave fabrics, and linens of plum and soft cream.
The two venues are the latest properties of Addison Hospitality Group, for which Gene Kaufman Architect’s interiors group previously designed the 5,000-square-foot Monarch Rooftop & Indoor Lounge at the Marriott Courtyard Herald Square that opened in 2013.
“I am thrilled to once again team up with New York City’s leading design house, Gene Kaufman Architect,” stated Ric Addison, president of Addison Hospitality Group. “There is an abounding synergy between both of our brands, which was evident in our collaboration on Monarch Rooftop & Indoor Lounge in 2013. Their ideas are fresh, cutting edge, and visionary, and I am confident that Magnolia Restaurant and Lovage Rooftop & Indoor Lounge will reflect their talent and creative sense of style that is uniquely their own.”
Following our recent 2017 travel trend predictions, we’re bringing you the latest on our newest hotels to look out for in 2017…

Thousands of new hotel rooms have to be built every year to cater for demand in the UK. More than 7,000 will be built in London in one year alone.
According to PWC, the hotel occupancy rate in the UK’s capital is as much as 84%. With nearly 150,000 hotel rooms in London that is a lot of bookings, and the average room rate is £145. With the hotel market continuing to grow, specialist teams are put in place by developers to ensure that rooms are up to the standards that guests demand in modern, world-class facilities.
The following list from TowerEight highlights the specialist considerations that developers need to think about when building a new hotel, and how both art and science are involved in creating the perfect hotel room…
1. What To Do With Corridors Corridors are a tricky issue in hotel developments given that they are non-revenue generating, yet still need to feature on almost all levels. A sign of a good hotel architect is the minimal use of corridors wherever possible, without compromising the design, to maximise revenue-generating space. Alternatively, corridors can be used to generate revenue, whether by showcasing artwork that can be purchased by guests or as an advertising space for food and beverage offers.
2. If Everyone Has a Bath at the Same Time… Most boilers in hotels are oversized and only run at 60% efficiency. Even ‘green’ hotels are only able to handle 75% of the peak demand. So, with average occupancy at 84%, hotels have to hope that guests don’t all choose to have a bath at the same time. Though, with the most popular times for ablution being pre-breakfast, and pre-dinner, it must be close sometimes.
3. Wear and Tear Hotel furnishing and fittings are gauged by “rub rate” i.e. the amount of wear they can take. Hotel designers choose a fabric for curtains and carpets by its ability to be hard-wearing. In a top London hotel, cashmere may be used for the curtains, cushions and throws, with a typical rub rate in the low thousands. In cost-conscious hotels, a wool mix carpet would be expected to be trodden on more than 2,000 times!
4. Cost Per Key Working with hotel developers, you will frequently hear the term ‘cost per key’ as opposed to cost per sqm/sq. ft. as used in commercial/residential sectors.
5. The Environment Increasingly, environmentally conscious hotels are utilising ‘greywater’. This is recycled (and filtered onsite) water taken from showers and reused to flush toilets. In these hotels, you have a one in two chance of having come across the same water during a long stay! However, this solution is obviously much better for the environment.
6. How Often to Paint Hotels are typically refurbished every three to four years, dependent on the level of maintenance they receive and the planned level of fatigue for the room décor at the time of construction. Refurbished does not mean redesigned, a refurb might mean a lick of paint and a deep clean. On average, a budget hotel room may receive more than 20 tins of paint in a 10-year period, compared to more than 40 tins in one of London’s luxury hotels.
7. Clever Design Tricks Many guests assume a little undercut to their bathroom door means it is poor fitting, but it’s actually a regular design facet of many hotels, there to help air circulation and extract moisture from the bathroom.
8. Keeping Up With Trends Tea and coffee making facilities (TCMF) are a bit of a throwback and there is a developing trend of incorporating social hubs into hotel lobbies, receptions and surrounding pop-ups instead. We predict that TCMF will continue to reduce, or evolve into something more personalised.
9. Practical Colour Schemes It is rare to find a hotel room with solid colours – patterns, flecks and multiple colours are nearly always used to hide wear and tear or stains!
10. Fresh Air Fresh air to a room either comes through the window, if it can be opened, or is ducted in through the system – typically installed in the lobby. Hotels of more than three stories will rarely ever have windows that can open fully because of the threat of legal action around any unfortunate guest that tries to climb out.
11. Solving Problems Hotels are traditionally graded by the views (i.e. sea view) so internal hotel rooms are generally perceived as a lower class and let at lower rates. The aim is to achieve 100% occupancy at maximum rate. To get around this, designers make clever use of light-boxes and light rails in corridors to imitate light, allowing hoteliers to successfully let internal rooms with no natural light. The irony of the situation is that most people check in post 5:30pm when it’s already dark outside.
12. Height Challenges Hotel signage at high level is often installed by abseilers. A team of between two to three guys can erect a 10-metre hotel sign, more than 10 stories high, in just 48 hours.
13. Tradition Most hotels don’t have room or floor no.13…superstition still rules!
Hotel Designs partners Geberit have teamed up with The Sleep Geek as part of a national campaign.
Central to the campaign was a radio broadcast with independent sleep practitioner, educator and environment analyst James Wilson, aka the Sleep Geek. During the radio interviews, which aired on 33 stations around the country to more than four million listeners, the Sleep Geek used results of a Geberit survey into people’s sleeping habits to offer tips on reducing night time disturbance.
The research revealed that 90% of Brits wake at least once a night, with 1 in 10 people waking five times or more. The number one reason for waking is to use the toilet, with 80% of people struggling to get back to sleep following a visit to the bathroom. During the radio interviews, the Sleep Geek explained how the bathroom environment can have an impact on people’s ability to get back to sleep after going to the toilet.
Sleep practioner James Wilson – aka the ‘Sleep Geek’
He said: “Turning the bathroom light on to navigate your way to the toilet sends a message to the brain that it’s time to wake up. This corresponds with the research which revealed that 40% of people turn on the light when they wake to go to the toilet. Add to this the shock of sitting on a cold toilet seat and it becomes clear that we don’t stand much chance of keeping our brains in sleep mode.”
The campaign incorporated online resources, including a dedicated landing page on the Geberit AquaClean website. Here, consumers could hear more from the Sleep Geek, and learn more about the benefits of Geberit AquaClean Mera and Geberit Monolith Plus. Both products feature an orientation light while the Geberit AquaClean Mera also has a heated seat and a super quiet flush to ensure disturbance is minimised.
The Geberit Sleep campaign also attracted a large audience on social media channels, including a Facebook competition to win a luxury sleep hamper.
“Using a number of very effective marketing tools, including radio and online, the campaign highlighted how the bathroom can be designed as a night time environment to help reduce disruption to sleep patterns,” commented Raffaela De Vittorio, Marketing and Brands Director, for Geberit. “While we can’t guarantee a good night’s sleep, products such as Geberit AquaClean Mera and Geberit Monolith Plus offer ways to make the bathroom environment as comfortable and relaxing as possible, even in the middle of the night.”
As we give the warmest of welcomes to 2017 in the Viero UK office, it’s a fitting time to take a look at what’s likely to be trending during the upcoming year.
A new year often means new trends and, in the world of interior design, colour plays a huge part in how we tackle our projects.
While we always tell our clients that natural intuition is the most powerful tool when choosing your colour scheme, that doesn’t mean we can’t give you a little helping hand when it comes to this very personal selection process.
This year, we believe it’s time to take a bolder and more confident approach to tackling the dreaded colour palette dilemma.
We know that grey will continue to be as popular as ever. We completed more grey-shaded projects than any other last year and it’s hardly a surprise when you consider that its almost unrivalled versatility makes it a natural choice for any contemporary design brief.
But we’re asking our creative clients whether it might be time look at deeper, warmer greys or even use lighter greys as a great backdrop to introduce other bolder colours into their projects. And that’s exactly why we’re ‘feeling blue’ at the start of 2017. So much so, we believe deep ocean blue shades could well be the emerging colour of choice in the year ahead.
Our interior design partners can’t speak highly enough of the qualities these deep blue tones bring to the surfaces of both residential and commercial spaces. It brings great strength, coolness and warmth in equal measure and creates a peaceful environment due to its natural links.
Blue works well across large spaces which benefit from high ceilings and long corridors as well as bold feature walls. So watch this space as blue gets set to take centre stage as 2017 moves along.
Sir Peter Blake, a leading figure in the art world, and often referred to as the ‘Godfather of British Pop Art’, has been commissioned by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group to create a collage which will cover Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London’s iconic façade during part of the hotel’s comprehensive phased renovation.
The immense collage entitled Our Fans, has been created to provide an eye-catching diversion along Knightsbridge. Our Fans, the largest artwork Sir Peter Blake has ever created, is a collage of 100 prominent faces, from Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren to Joanna Lumley and Jenny Packham. All are regular guests at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London as well as fans of the Group’s hotels around the world.
The collage has become Blake’s trademark format and one that he has returned to time and again over the years. “This artwork was very different to my usual way of working”, he said. “A collage is very time consuming and laborious, but this was more a matter of arranging the figures and making them work together – making sure no one had a cut-off shoulder or missing legs – that’s the skill of it. It was an amazing project to work on. Hopefully, people passing by will try to spot celebrities they recognize,” he added.
Mandarin Oriental’s creative advertising agency, LONDON advertising, created the concept of the poster, and interviewed Sir Peter Blake about this project. Click here to view the interview.
Deutsche Hospitality is continuing on its path of expansion. The focus is both on tapping into new markets and on strengthening its brand presence at existing locations.
In accordance with this strategy, the company has signed 14 contracts for new hotel on three continents over the past year. One particular milestone to mark the new year is the launching of the one hundredth hotel to operate under a Deutsche Hospitality brand.
The Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir is located at the very heart of the Egyptian metropolis of Cairo. Its central position on Tahrir Square, only 900 metres from the Egyptian Museum and within the immediate vicinity of the city’s main sightseeing attractions like the Khan El Khalili Bazaar, makes it the ideal starting point for any kind of activity tourists and business travellers wish to pursue. As leading international hospitality company in Egypt, Deutsche Hospitality extends its presence now to eleven hotels and three Nile river ships.
“The opening of our 100th hotel is a real highlight in a company history that stretches back almost 87 years,” said Puneet Chhatwal, CEO of Deutsche Hospitality. “It sets out a clear direction of travel in our drive for growth. Cairo adds an internationally relevant metropolis with millions of inhabitants to our portfolio. At the same time, we are filling in a blank spot on the map in terms of our presence in Egypt, the second largest location of our hotel company after our home market of Germany.”
The Steigenberger El Tahrir offers its guests 300 exquisitely furnished rooms and suites, all of which are equipped with the very latest technology. Five conference rooms and a large banqueting Hall offer plenty of space for events, and there is also a spa as well as a health and beauty centre and gym complete with swimming pool.
Mrs. Mervat Hataba is chairwoman of the Owning Company of Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir, HOTAC. She announced that the Hotel has been opened successfully: “We believe that this is a great success to the owning company as we own several historical 5 stars hotels all over Egypt and the opening of Steigenberger El Tahrir is a great plus to our portfolio. To have a brand of Deutsche Hospitality in the prime location of El Tahrir square five minutes’ walk from the River Nile and surrounded by all big hotel chains and the Egyptian Museum is an added value to the Egyptian Market, wishing all the success to all our partners.”

If your interior design style is all about feeling the forces of nature, you won’t be disappointed with the décor at popular Italian restaurant Bernardi’s in the London’s West End.
Thanks to Viero UK’s Italian wall finish product called Cemento, the restaurant’s renovation project has been earning rave reviews. Specified for the project by interior and architecture design studio Coote & Bernardi, the Marble Arch eatery is well worth a visit.
Founder Gabriel Bernardi said: “Cemento has an earthy feel to compliment the Italian vibe we wanted to encompass – we really wanted to bring the outdoors in. “Since completing the project, there is this wonderful relief on the walls – it’s this added attention to detail that we wanted to incorporate as opposed to flat painted walls. The end product is absolutely stunning – we still receive regular compliments on how atmospheric the dining area is – we couldn’t have asked for a better result.”
Cemento is one of many of Viero UK’s specialist surface finishes designed to give a textured and characterful ambience.
This particular decorative plaster is pre-blended at Viero’s Italian laboratory made of water dispersible acrylic resin, micronized inert charges, light stable pigments and specific additives. It is recommended for fine decoration of interior walls where a concrete effect is desired, giving our clients an authentic look.
The rugged textures that are achieved with the application of this product bring a touch of the outdoor elements to an interior project. It’s perfect for capturing a natural theme.

The historic Kulm Country Club, located in the grounds of the legendary Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, has re-opened following a £9.5 million refurbishment and extension overseen by British architect Lord Foster.
Lord Foster, who loves the Engadine Valley and is a long-term resident of St. Moritz, said he was delighted to be able to make a contribution to his own community, “The challenge was to rescue the existing building, bring it back to its original function and to add new uses while also respecting the historic fabric. I am very proud of what we have been able to achieve – to harmoniously combine the old and the new”.
The Kulm Country Club first opened in 1905 and immediately became the place for residents and visitors to gather, sitting on the terrace soaking up the sun and admiring the panoramic Alpine views, intermittently taking spins on the natural ice rink in front of the building. In 1928 and 1948, the building was the official event base for the Winter Olympic Games, but by the 1980s it had ceased to be used and fell into disrepair.
With the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships taking place in St. Moritz and Lord Foster kindly offering his services, the owners of the Kulm Country Club (the Niarchos family who also own the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz) and the local community came together two years ago and agreed to return the building to its former glory as a venue for social gatherings and a focal point for major events. Renovation work stared in spring 2016 and has now been completed, including a modern grandstand that is currently being used as the medal presentation venue for the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships.
The two-storey Kulm Country Club, a synthesis of Art Nouveau and traditional Swiss style, is protected, so the fabric of the building remains very much as it was, with many original elements such as the main staircase and window frames retained. However, modern technologies and equipment have been introduced, like a new kitchen and a single core with lifts, food hoists and a second set of stairs, to enhance the performance of the building and make it accessible. Historic artefacts and memorabilia were preserved creating a museum of the building, which Lord Foster personally picked and positioned, alongside a selection of photographs, bobsleighs, sledges and other decorations from the region.
The Kulm Country Club now comprises a wood-panelled first-floor restaurant with a large sun terrace overlooking the ice rink in winter and tennis courts in summer, plus a lounge & bar area on the ground floor.

Gallery Direct recently appointed James Hudson as their Sales Director, alongside his role as Business Development Director for Furniture.
James commented: “I’m thrilled to be given the position of Sales Director, but delighted that I can also retain my role putting together our furniture collections which I love. Furniture has been a key part of my life for so long, it’s great that I can still utilise my design skills and knowledge.
“The combination of the two jobs will keep me busy (and the title is rather long, Sales and Business Development Director), but I’m always up for a challenge, and with my enthusiasm, experience and work ethic, I’m confident that I can balance the two roles and deliver the results required for both.”
So far things have gone well. Gallery’s new furniture collections were extremely well received at the January Furniture Show, and his sales team exceeded their sales target for January.

Lights on! With its new illuminated mirror elements, designer bathroom manufacturer Duravit presents individual light sources for every bathroom.
The right light ensures the ideal illumination of both the room and the user. With immediate effect, Duravit has launched the “Light and Mirrors” product series, a new, modular range of illuminated mirrors that meets a host of requirements in terms of comfort and practicality. The light profile, switch system, size and mirror heating can be individually selected to meet personal needs. The entire mirror portfolio is compatible with all Duravit products and provides impressive value.
There are three different light profiles to choose from: ambient light on all four sides, an illuminated area at the top edge of the mirror or two areas at the sides for optimum lighting scenarios. State-of-the-art LED technology with ambient lighting along all four sides creates a so called wall-wash effect: four homogeneous light sources are attached to the back for uniform illumination of the wall surrounding the mirror. This indirect light produces an atmospheric effect.
LEDs are also used in the two models with illumination at the sides. Here, however, a special profile deflects the light onto the matt lighting areas. This creates a homogeneous and rimless light source for optimum illumination of the user.
‘Good’ – ‘Better’ – ‘Best’ All three light profiles are available in several design variants. For the ‘Good’ version, Duravit offers a classic wall-mounted switch. Alternatively, for the ‘Better’ variant, they can be supplied with a sensor switch on the lower edge of the mirror. The sensor switch, ambient light at the lower edge for washing-area illumination, and mirror heating offer maximum comfort in the ultimate ‘Best’ mirror. The heating of the mirror surface prevents it from misting and ensures a clear view. The new Duravit mirrors are available in four widths from 60 cm to 120 cm. The basic mirror, developed especially for small bathrooms, is 40-cm wide and available exclusively with a wall-mounted switch.
This variety of options offers great scope for design lovers, while still offering a very attractive price category.

Mandarin Oriental, Honolulu will be the anchor of Mana`olana Place, a 36-storey mixed-use tower with gardens and public plazas, currently being developed by Los Angeles-based Salem Partners. Located in the heart of the Ala Moana district, the hotel is a short walk to Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana Beach.
The hotel’s 125 contemporary guestrooms and suites will be designed to reflect the Hawaiian culture, together with features inspired by Mandarin Oriental’s oriental heritage. The Group will also manage 107 Residences at Mandarin Oriental, located on the Mana’olana tower’s upper floors, which will provide some of the most luxurious private homes on the island.
Mandarin Oriental, Honolulu will feature a rooftop restaurant and bar with landscaped outdoor terraces, providing views of Diamond Head, Ala Moana Beach and Downtown Honolulu. There will also be a lobby lounge, an all-day dining restaurant and extensive banqueting and meeting spaces with views over the surrounding terraces and gardens.
In keeping with the Group’s wellness concepts, a Spa at Mandarin Oriental will offer holistic rejuvenation and relaxation with eight treatment rooms. Further leisure options include a comprehensive fitness centre and an outdoor swimming pool.
The design architects of the project are the Colorado-based firm, [au]workshop who envision the design as a modern, vertical urban resort epitomizing the Hawaiian tradition of the “lanai” with its seamless indoor-outdoor sense of place.
Honolulu is Hawaii’s political and economic centre, and is home to iconic destinations such as Waikiki Beach, Pearl Harbour and Diamond Head. As the state’s capital, Honolulu is the most populous city in Hawaii and serves as the primary entry point to the islands’ tourism industry and a major gateway to the United States and Asia-Pacific.
Expanding its international hospitality portfolio further, Leeu Collection has acquired its second European property, the former Collegio Alla Querce in Florence, Italy.
Located in Via della Piazzuola, just 2km north-east of the city’s historic heart and 9km from Florence’s international airport, the complex covers a total area of 13,400m2 plus 15,500m2 of park, which will be transformed into a 70-plus bedroom luxury hotel and gardens, set to open in 2021. Parts of the historic Collegio Alla Querce, which has its own chapel and theatre, were previously used as a boarding school and hotel.
This latest acquisition echoes the vision of Analjit Singh, Leeu Collection’s founder and entrepreneur of Indian origin, of creating unrivalled escapes and offering visitors extraordinary experiences.
For Analjit, giving this project the ‘Leeu touch’ through redevelopment and renovation is of utmost importance. “We will remain true to the pillars of our brand: inspiring art collections, distinct architecture and design; manicured and detailed landscaping that reflects respect for the environment; superlative service with attention to the smallest detail; spectacular views and an outstanding food and wine experience.
“Given the Florence hospitality and tourism boom, as well as the improving economic backdrop rejuvenating the European hotel sector, this new development is well timed and complements our existing portfolio. The Leeu Collection team will create an unforgettable experience in a superb setting.”
“The acquisition of this formidable historic property will complement Leeu Collection’s ethos of extraordinary offerings around the globe,” added Carrie Wicks, CEO of Leeu Collection. “The project foresees the creation of a 5-star luxury hotel and a wide range of additional facilities, such as meeting and event spaces, a spa and restaurants.”
A host of fresh, exciting new lifestyle choices went on display at this year’s January Furniture Show (Birmingham NEC Jan 22 – 25) – the UK’s annual furnishing industry’s showcase.
The place to glean all the latest interiors trends for UK homes, the four day trade show plays host to some of the most prestigious names in upholstery, cabinet furniture, beds, lighting, flooring, accessories and fabrics.
And each sector has something new to offer for 2017…
Cabinet A celebration of wood in all its glorious shapes and forms was evident at this year’s show, representing a marked move away from the sea of oak that has dominated the British interiors market since the demise of pine.
Fall in love with acacia, pine, beech and mountain ash timbers which are set to add a warmth and richness to British homes. Sometimes it’s cross sawn, distressed, etched or even loosely painted for extra interest – or even a combination of several finishes in one multi-tonal piece.
In its more contemporary form, cabinet furniture basks in the subtlety of fine design – whether in classy, high gloss finishes or through allowing the natural beauty of wood to shine through in understated curved designs combined with elements of pure white. But watch out too for an emerging trend in cabinetry – alluring antiquity. Sure to have the fashionistas flocking, this hot-off-the-press look makes classic antique shapes hip again, presented in either mixed wood finishes or audaciously bright paint. Last year’s trend for wood with metal – in both its rawest industrial form, to a more moderated look for urban chic-elites – was once again in evidence, much of the wood being upcycled to offer panache with provenance.
Retro with a twist continues to be another look in its own right. Compact styling with those tell-tale 60s angled legs came together with on-trend finishes and colour in an eclectic nod to the G Plan era.
Upholstery Signs are that ‘shabby chic’ is making a welcome return, offering a soft and comfy look for the home. Low seats and loose coverings provide the perfect solution for modern yet practical upholstery and work well for family homes and contemporary apartments.
High back chairs in bright, velvet or patterns were popular, combining classic with contemporary style. Designed to maximise unused corners of the home, occasional chairs are perfect for creating mini havens of comfort; or to create a focal point in a room.
Detailed edging, particularly piping in contrasted colours and studs were drawing the eye as were brightly coloured fabrics, particularly teals, yellows and earthy greens. Mixed scatter cushions were seen across the show, creating a playful mix of fabric and colour. Tapestry-style florals, tribal patterns and soft leathers, again combining classic and contemporary, was a clear trend.
Modern retro is still on the scene with updated 60s and 70s style upholstery. Thin diagonal legs and low backs on sofas and chairs featured heavily across the show. With velvet still a big player in furnishings, brands have started to experiment with it, mixing colours and textures. A combination of primary coloured velvets with wool mix plaid fabrics and tartan patterns broadened the appeal and created a cosy and sumptuous look. Light grey and silver velvet sofas added a touch of glamour to the show and worked well with glass furniture and statement mirrors.
Accessories The industrial look is still big in homeware however, many brands have toned it down. Rustic and reclaimed were mixed with greys and whites, demonstrating a much softer look along with a wealth of chrome, glass and heavy rope. The vogue for mixed wood could be seen across all furniture and accessories while the popular coastal look breezed across the show, accessories completing the themes. Glitz and glam was right out there too with wow factor glass pieces and show stopping mirrors.
Glitter pictures with silver and glass frames brought some Hollywood moments to the NEC adding a touch of pizzazz to home furnishings. High-end hospitality pieces were also there in force offering unique designs for those who love entertaining in style – be it with beautiful champagne, wine and drink holders or stunning culinary show pieces. A fabulous array of choice on the cushion front offered a further way of updating a room with an eclectic mix of fabrics, patterns and colour all there to create layers of texture and wow factor.
Lighting There was yet more glitz and glamour on the lighting front where two key trends emerged. Focal pendant lighting was shown in the form of extra-large chandeliers or ostentatious floral glass balls while extravagant tripod spotlights in polished metals also made an appearance. Open metalwork lighting – in copper, bronze, silver or even matte black – teamed with giant Eddison bulbs are still on trend for 2017. At the other end of the spectrum, floor lamps took on bright shades, such as citrus yellows, mixed with wood bases which work well for a Scandinavian look.
Flooring The softer the better, when it comes to cushioning the feet. Polypropylene fibres still lead the way in carpet construction with rich lustrous textures highly sought after. Continuing from last year, greys are still the colour of choice with every conceivable shade of grey on offer – including ones with a lurex yarn to add a completely new dimension. If you want to buck this trend, ‘au natural’ is a big hit – think 100% wools, undyed yarns and sustainability; or why not speak loud and proud with geometric designs and striking shades which continue to pave the way forward in rugs.
Beds As the rise in popularity of upholstered beds continues to grow, they are fast becoming the most important piece in bedroom décor. From contemporary greys and taupe’s to the 2017 colour of the year – green – upholstered beds are now an attractive centrepiece. Floor standing headboards are still a prominent feature and bring individuality into bedroom design. If you’re into your technology it’s all about electric ottomans for the year ahead.
Fabric Traditionally at the forefront of new interiors trends, fabric continues to offer almost unlimited possibilities for upholstery and soft furnishings. Velvets, in all manner of styles and finishes, remains a popular choice with moquettes providing the genre with pattern – particularly small scale geometries – colour and decorative texture. Elsewhere, naive handblock-style indianesque prints in knocked back shades of spice and saffron or subtle blues and greys were in evidence. And matching the mood for a more natural environment were chunky herringbones, textured jacquard and ethnic weaves. Traditional British cloth continues to offer the market timeless and classic elegance.
The new Havana Collection from Morgan, designed by Katerina Zachariades, puts the spotlight on structure with its sculptural timber frame which becomes a key element of the design.
Characterised by a refined, hand-crafted and distinctively shaped side profile, Havana offers a unique take on an archetypal, mid-century style.
Available in Oak, Beech or Walnut species, Havana consists of solid timber profiles with a simple timber slat construction and ply backed upholstered seat and back pads. The resulting lounge chair is comfortable with a light aesthetic.
With its dynamic structure and modern design, the new collection is perfect for a variety of interiors including workplace, hospitality and healthcare projects.
Havana will be on display in London, along with new dining chairs which will be added to the collection, during Clerkenwell Design Week. Please visit the Morgan showroom at 1 Dallington Street, ECV1 0BH.

Versital is delighted to have been specified by the Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel in London for the second stage of its bathroom renovations.
Versital supplied 40 bespoke shower trays for the first phase of refurbishments completed in November 2016. The second stage will start in February 2017 and will see Versital supply an additional 200 bespoke shower trays over the course of a year.
“We specified Versital shower trays as we needed a solution that was completely bespoke and could meet the requirements of the current waste disposal positioning in the rooms; allowing us to renovate them with minimal disruption to the integral design. The bespoke shower trays are an unusual shape and fit a space that was once occupied by a bath. Our guests love the new bathrooms and in 2017 we will renovate 200 more,” says Keith Large, Director of Engineering at the Andaz London Liverpool Street hotel.

Versital stone resin shower trays are made to measure, allowing you to specify the shape, size and position of the waste outlet. They are available in 90 colours and finishes such as marble, granite, sparkle and high gloss.

We are delighted to be able to offer a bespoke solution to the Andaz on such a large scale. This year we have several more big projects in the pipeline, as well as two recent accolades to celebrate – a Mixology commendation for our surfaces in December and a Best of Houzz award in January.”

The Andaz Liverpool Street is a luxury, boutique hotel near Shoreditch. It features 267 contemporary guest rooms and suites.
“For many guests, the bathroom experience is one of the most anticipated elements of their stay at the Andaz,” says Keith Large, Director of Engineering at the Andaz London Liverpool Street hotel. “It becomes a sanctuary for them to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of central London. However, in recent years we have learnt from guests that time constraints, busy schedules and personal preferences mean they favour a rejuvenating, hot shower over a long, relaxing bath.
DoubleTree by Hilton has introduced an additional 12 properties to its UK portfolio in the past 12 months and now welcomes guests at more than 30 hotels throughout the country.
Eight of the 12 hotel openings were part of a £16 million conversion programme, providing unique, contemporary accommodations and full-service facilities to guests in Aberdeen Treetops, Bristol North, Coventry, Dartford Bridge, Edinburgh Airport, Newbury North, Southampton and Strathclyde.
Dianna Vaughan, senior vice president and global brand head, DoubleTree by Hilton, said: “The addition of 12 UK hotels in 2016 – from Aberdeen in Scotland to Southampton on the South Coast – took us past 30 properties and significantly strengthened our position in the market.”
Since launching in the UK in 2008, DoubleTree by Hilton has expanded rapidly across the country, opening an average of four new hotels each year. The brand offers a consistent, upscale standard of accommodation within a varied portfolio which has grown to incorporate many long-established hotels, such as DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London – Ealing and DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London – Hyde Park.
Each hotel in the conversion programme has been refurbished, now showcases individual design and F&B concepts, reflecting the location of each property and newly renovated meeting spaces, commencing with Strathclyde in October and completing with Edinburgh Airport in December.
Viero are helping their readers to get a better understanding of their UK product range this year by taking an in-depth look at one of their specialist finishes in a newly launched ‘product of the month’ feature.
To kick off the feature, we’re taking a look at Travetine and its specification in a Covent Garden restaurant.
Characteristics This decorative wall coating plaster can be used for interiors and exteriors and can achieve a wide range of shadow effects. Due to the natural composition of this product, the final colour will depend on the weather conditions and absorption of the plaster.
Travertine is based on lime putty, natural colouring earths, marble sands and grains. These are additives which improve the characteristics of the product and its gripping properties, without altering the breathability of the finishing.
For the best results, it should be applied to interior wall surfaces that are safe and sound with no humidity. And for external surfaces, it’s important to ensure they are well prepared, protected and without rising dampness.
Delivery Travertine’s textured finish is central to its ability to create a rustic and traditional feel for any design project. Architect Alessio Nardi specified this finish for a design project at Mamie’s creperie and cider bar in the bustling Covent Garden, London.
He said: “Mamie’s is a French restaurant specialising in galettes and crepes with both the food menu and the interiors attempting to bridge the link between Britain and Brittany.
“Travertine was our surface finish of choice for the project as it’s reminiscent of Southern Europe coastal architecture facades and gives a nice texture to the wall, especially in the evening when the lights are on. I also especially liked the tactility of it, the roughness that reminds of natural elements like rocks and stones.”
Viero UK loves the effects that can be achieved with Travertine and has identified restaurants as its perfect habitat. Its handmade and bespoke look and feel is great for creating an environment packed with character. The finish also looks great in a combined panel pattern next to a polished plaster finish, which could lend itself to a swimming pool environment.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations Specialised Agency for Tourism, has expressed its deep concern and strong condemnation over the recently announced travel ban by the United States of America (USA) to nationals of seven countries (Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen).
The travel ban, based on nationality, is contrary to the principles of freedom of travel and travel facilitation promoted by the international tourism community and will hinder the immense benefits of the tourism sector brings in terms of economic growth and job creation to many countries, including the USA.
“Global challenges demand global solutions and the security challenges that we face today should not prompt us to build new walls; on the contrary, isolationism and blind discriminatory actions will not lead to increased security but rather to growing tensions and threats”, said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.
“Besides the direct impact, the image of a country which imposes travel bans in such a hostile way will surely be affected among visitors from all over the world and risk dumping travel demand to the USA” added Mr Rifai.
French hotel group Le Méridien has opened its new 4-star hotel in Paris. The French capital itself has been a clear influence on the 1,025 room development, with “etoile” meaning star in French, possibly a reference to Paris’ nickname, The City of Lights.
Following the hotel’s transformation, the property now boasts reimagined guestrooms, suites and the transformation of the hotel’s public spaces, including the legendary Jazz Club Etoile and brand’s signature lobby concept: Le Méridien Hub. Design was by French interior architect Jean-Philippe Nuel.
Located in the 17th arrondissement, anchored by Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysées, the hotel is the largest hotel in central Paris. The redesign of the hotel’s rooms was led by Nuel, while London-based firm Michaelis Boyd restyled all the public areas; both draw inspiration from the brand’s mid-century modern design aesthetic.

“The Westin brand is among the most recognisable and resonant brands with both business and leisure travelers,” said Gerry Chase, president and COO of New Castle.
The Westin Nova Scotian was built in 1930 as one of the famed Canadian National Railway hotels that stretched across Canada from the Pacific to the Atlantic oceans. Amenities like our indoor saltwater pool and full-service Sykea spa, as well as our green meetings designation and other environmental recognition bring that message home. It’s an ideal combination.”
The Westin Nova Scotian has earned 4-Diamond status from CAA/AAA for the past seven years and its Elements on Hollis restaurant has earned six consecutive Wine Spectator awards of excellence.

It is both an apartment and a hotel housed in a magnificent Renaissance Revival building in the heart of Rome.
It is both a one-of-a-kind accommodation and a place to feel at home. The Mascagni Luxury Dépendance, which opened in July 2016, offers all this and more. Being ever attentive to trends in the hospitality sector, the Space Hotels group has just added this Roman hotel to its portfolio, as it is a shining example of how an establishment can re-invent and evolve itself to keep up with the needs of its clientele.
The Mascagni Luxury Dépendance, which is an annex located just twenty metres from the Hotel Mascagni in a prestigious 19th-century Renaissance Revival building with mosaic floors, opens up a new frontier in the capital city’s hospitality. Its twelve suites and rooms are located on the building’s fourth and fifth floors, offering guests who choose to stay in this “Roman home” both an exceptional view of the city’s rooftops and the convenience of hotel room.
The annex was created by the Hotel Mascagni based on its many years of experience and opened in July 2016 to offer a more intimate and innovative concept of hospitality, that of independent accommodation. The group of rooms was skilfully designed by an architect who blended the comfort of a hotel with a feeling of familiarity and home. The décor in all the suites and rooms was inspired by the modern, elegant Rationalist style of the early 1940s and updated with pastel-coloured walls and matching fabrics that contrast with the dark parquet floors and luxury furnishings. The use of precious Carrara marble in the ensuite bathrooms and hallways makes this annex into a luxury home.
What is the advantage of having hotel rooms in a residential building? The answer is an easy one. The advantage is staying in a peaceful and private room that is completely independent and still offers all the comfort and attention of being a guest in a hotel. As well as having access to a 24-hour reception desk with check-in and check-out service, choosing between a buffet or room-service breakfast and being only 20 metres away from a charming bar.
All the guestrooms are designed to be lived in like apartments, so they offer ample space and an area to store luggage. Moreover, each room has a kettle for making tea and a Nespresso machine for making Italian coffee at any time of the day. And last but not least, the expected and appreciated modern technology of USB wall sockets for charging mobiles and tablets. Both the inward and outward facing rooms offer wonderful views of Rome’s famous cityscape, from Via XX Settembre to the famous Piazza Esedra.
In this day and age of mass production and mass consumption, it is always a satisfying to find good craftsmanship, skilled work and years of experience combining – something Hotel Designs had the pleasure of witnessing during a recent tour of Dernier & Hamlyn’s factory in Croydon.
To look from the outside, you would be hard-pressed to remember that the company has been producing lighting of the highest quality for nearly 130 years and its pieces have featured in some of the most prestigious hospitality projects in that time. But once inside, that becomes very quickly evident.
The small but close-knot and highly-experienced team, led by joint managing director Brian Spiking, are a hive of activity when I arrive – and I’m soon shown around getting a glimpse of some of the pieces they are working on and a privileged insight into the projects in which they will feature. Whilst walking around, Brian emphasises the blend of traditional methods of production and modern technologies – some of which are unique to the company; something designers like most about working with Dernier & Hamlyn – finely-tuned expertise and a rich heritage.
It’s the same with the design proposals front-of-house, too. I’m shown through the archives, with beautifully hand-drawn and hand-painted folios of designs of old; an extremely time-consuming and painstaking process if needed to be changed later on during a project. Today, some technical drawings are still produced by hand, but it’s combined with computer-aided-design, which creates a more complete vision for clients. Casting of prototypes with 3D printing – rather than the traditional method of wood and brass casting – has also streamlined Dernier & Hamlyn’s offering.
This is a small but supremely efficient and successful operation, something evidenced by the numerous high-end hotels utilising Dernier & Hamlyn pieces around the world. Hotel Designs caught up with joint-managing director Jeremy Quantrill for a deeper insight into this unique company…
——-
Hotel Designs: Could you give us a bit of history about Dernier & Hamlyn as a company and then your own background and your involvement with them? Jeremy Quantrill: Dernier & Hamlyn has been a major player in the decorative lighting industry since the company was founded by Louis Dernier in 1888. We’ve always been London-based starting out by importing silks from France and China to make high quality hand decorated lampshades. By 1913 our customers included Liberty and our catalogue included more than 700 different lampshades and fittings, a truly vast product range for the time. During the First World War Lloyd-George’s Government placed orders with small companies across the UK to use their skills in new ways, which for us this meant manufacturing aircraft parts. After the war and throughout the 1920s the company continued to grow and in 1931 following various incarnations changed its name to Dernier & Hamlyn to reflect its new ownership.
In 2000, the same year as a management buyout, Dernier & Hamlyn was awarded the Royal Warrant to supply HM The Queen, which it still holds with pride. In 2001 the factory was moved to Croydon where it remains as one of the few UK companies actually designing and producing chandeliers, wall lights, lanterns, table lamps and other unique lighting products in its own premises. I run the company with Brian [Spiking]. I look after business development while he takes care of manufacturing and technical operations. Together we have worked for D&H for almost 70 years. However, we’re by no means unique, several of our people have been here for more than 30 which must say something about how much they enjoy their work!
HD: How important is the ‘bespoke’ element to what Dernier & Hamlyn do? JQ: It runs through everything we do. We simply don’t produce off the shelf lighting. Each project has unique elements in the way it is designed, manufactured and installed. That’s what makes it such an interesting company to work for.
HD: Given D&H’s proud ‘made in Britain’ ethos, right now do you think there are enough companies doing this? Or indeed enough designers utilising companies that do? JQ: I’m sorry to say no on both counts. While it can be cheaper to produce lighting overseas the quality is nowhere near as high as from British companies like D&H. Unfortunately, there is widespread misconceptions about the costs involved with bespoke lighting. Because our people have worked in the industry for so long it’s rare that they cannot find a solution to designers’ requirements that gives the look they want within their budget. They just need to talk to us and it’s amazing how innovative our guys can be with finishing techniques, lamping options and so on.
There is also a problem with companies which purport to “make in Britain” when actually all they do is import parts and fix them together here. That is not only misleading it is also unfair on companies which actually do what they say they do.
HD: How do the team find balancing technical practicality and the aesthetics of a designer’s vision? JQ: Because many of them have been around for a long time they invariably come up with lighting that ticks all the boxes. We have lots of examples of how they have tackled this type of thing. For Rosewood London, Martin Brudnizki Design Studio wanted 2 metre-high globe chandeliers. The aim was to produce a Verdigris effect to emulate weathering by the British climate. While brass and steel were considered, they would have resulted in chandeliers that were much too heavy for the ceiling. Producing them in aluminium and using specialist finishing techniques means they are not only lighter and less expensive but also look exactly as the designers had envisaged. (Video below)
HD: Dernier & Hamlyn work with boutiques right up to five-star mega projects – which is easier to manufacture for? What are the different challenges? JQ: It’s less about the location and more about the designers and clients involved. Working with people who have a clear vision for the space and how the lighting fits into the design narrative are a pleasure whatever the engineering and manufacturing challenges.
HD: And finally, is there a specific D&H project that you are particularly proud of? JQ: There are many. It’s the pride in what our team produces that keeps me here. I think my favourite hotel projects have been at The Connaught where we have worked for designer Guy Oliver on many occasions. Then there is Claridge’s which interprets my favourite design period, art deco, in beautiful ways. Although there are few luxury hotels in London and in many other places around the world where you won’t find statement lighting that has been made by us.

The words cruise and luxury have been inextricably linked since the days when the mighty liners were the preferred mode of transport for traversing the globe.
Regent Seven Seas have taken those levels of luxury to new higher standards with their recently launched ship Explorer. Christened by Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco in 2016, the ship brings elegance and glamour to the world’s greatest destinations allowing guests to travel whilst viewing Picassos and Segals hanging within the spacious interiors.
International lighting specialists Chelsom worked closely with the three design practices involved in the luxurious interiors- RTKL of Miami, Tillberg of Sweden and ICrave of New York- to create the stunning decor schemes which claim to ‘exceed the loftiest expectations for luxury’.
The main lighting focal point is the spectacular chandelier which hangs in the atrium between sweeping art deco staircases, intricate columns and sculptured architectural features. With a diameter of 3metres and a drop of over 4metres, the chandelier features over 6,000 individual high quality crystal octagon drops, each one attached to a chrome wire frame to prevent movement and vibration when the ship is under way. The drops are suspended from a finely engineered custom brass frame.
Further high quality glass, but in a more contemporary style, is used in the Meridian Lounge where a 5.5metre diameter horseshoe chandelier illuminates the dancefloor and surrounding tables. Three tiers of individually mouth blown teardrop glasses are illuminated from above with LED light sources.
By contrast, in the Canyon Ranch Spa Club, Chelsom created a spectacular modern lighting feature using polished stainless steel and hand sculpted glass cylinder shades. At 2.5metres diameter, the fitting draws the eye as soon as you enter the spa reception and further chandeliers were created throughout the rest of the spa.
Entertaining guests is a high priority on board and the luxurious Constellation Theatre provides the ideal setting for evening performances, many in the true Hollywood style. Chelsom created a striking chandelier to hang in the decadent stairwell which featured hand cut triedri clear glass drops hanging from a polished brass frame. Illuminated from within by a myriad of clear lamps, the chandelier adds just the right kind of sparkle to this theatrical setting.
Having a good time extends beyond the confines of the ship and shore excursions to the various destinations is a big part of the cruising programme. The Destination Centre therefore is a popular area which guests can visit and relax in whilst arranging exciting times ashore. Centred above the opulent sofas hangs a custom made Chelsom chandelier dressed with 350 individual rods each containing 5 or 6 mouth blown glass spheres in a mixture of mirrored and clear crystal glass with the light reflected off the highly polished metal frame.
Were those passengers from the great early twentieth century liners able to come back today and cruise on the Explorer, they would no doubt feel completely at home in the opulent luxury of her magnificent interiors.

Recognising industry talent and a commitment to producing work of the highest quality, the 2016 Geberit Awards winners have been announced.
The standard of nominations this year was extremely high, with the judges having a hard task separating some of the most stand-out entries in each category. Jonathan Terry scooped the title of ‘Best Domestic Bathroom Installer’, after being nominated for the title by Taylors Etc. in Cardiff. The bathroom showroom regularly recommends Jonathan to its customers due to his exceptional workmanship. Geberit Awards judges agreed, commenting on one particularly complex install by saying: “Attention to detail and impressive installation practice has resulted in a very neat finish.”
Second place in this category was awarded to Steve Phippard of ASP Plumbing, with Mark Fowdon of Studio One South West scooping the third-place spot. The very best examples of how teamwork pays off were on display in the ‘Best Installer Team’ category, with Sanctuary Bathrooms taking the top spot. Their work installing a master en-suite incorporating Geberit products to wall-mount the sanitaryware and maximise on space particularly impressed the judging panel. Judges comments included: “The overall finish is of a high standard, extremely neat and you can clearly see the installation team have a keen eye for detail.”
Jonathan Terry scooped the title of ‘Best Domestic Bathroom Installer’
Taking second place in the ‘Best Installer Team’ category went to Dunster Biomass Heating who chose Geberit Mapress when fitting a woodchip biomass system at a privately owned property in Sussex. The remaining spot was awarded to Designer Group, for their excellent team work while installing Geberit HDPE in student accomodation in Dublin.
The many advantages of specifying Geberit Mapress were maximised by the winners of the ‘Best Supply Systems Installer’ category, with Derek Barclay of K J Quinn Services taking the title. Using his initiative and drawing on his expertise, Derek specified Geberit Mapress Carbon Steel as the best fit for a complete boiler room installation for the M.O.D in Wiltshire.
Completing the project to exacting timescales, Derek was praised by Geberit Awards judges, who said: “This entry detailed the time constraints K J Quinn Services faced with this job. After finding Geberit Mapress as an alternative method they managed to halve their intitial installation time from 8 weeks to 4 weeks. The care and attention to the individual stages of the installation made this a stand-out entry.”
‘Best Supply Systems Installer’ category was won by Derek Barclay of K J Quinn Services
An exceptional commitment to the job was also shown by second place ‘Best Supply Systems Installer’ Mark Griffiths, who used Geberit Mapress for the efficient installation of a twin air source heat pump system. Third place in this category went to Christopher Flaherty of Vietec Heating. Again, Geberit Mapress was the piping solution of choice for Christopher when tasked with fitting a new heating system into a private residence in London.
The overall winner of each category picks up a cheque for £1,000, with Makita Drill Sets and Radios for the runners up.
“It is great to see so many installers taking pride in their work and always striving to achieve the very best,” commented Raffaela De Vittorio, Geberit Marketing & Brands Director. “Each of the winners and runners up has clearly demonstrated how Geberit products can be utilised to their best effect.”
Ever-changing trends are part and parcel of the interior design world.
The UK ‘s wall surfaces are renowned for being decorated with wallpaper, paint and tiles, but we believe a huge change is happening right now as the industry shifts towards using traditional Italian plasters to creatively transform both interior and exterior surfaces.
It’s by no means time to say goodbye to wallpaper. After all, it’s a classic way to update any room with a print, and will always have a place in the market. However, in today’s day and age, architects and interior designers are forever on the lookout for something new and bespoke for their clients.
Why plaster finishes? Italian lime plasters have been used since the Roman times and are one of the most durable building materials on the market.
Their use as a decorative plaster is becoming more and more popular due to its versatility and its ability to achieve a multitude of effects and textures. It has the ability to sit calmly in the background, or where necessary, take centre stage and dominate a room. It is completely timeless, allowing your furniture and accessories to adapt and change over time.
Each plaster finish is applied by the hand of a highly skilled craftsmen, allowing you to choose the amount of texture, shine, colour and overall finish to meet your exact requirements. As we assure our clients, no two Viero walls are ever the same, which guarantees that individuality that we all crave.
The benefits of using luxury polished plasters along with the more textured plaster wall finishes stretches way beyond aesthetics. We’ve all been left frustrated with marked and damaged wallpaper, forcing recurring costs and timely refurbishments.
Plasters offer an unrivalled durability along with easy maintenance – and lime plasters are even fire and water resistant. These days, lime plaster is often being used to replace tiles in bathrooms, kitchens and swimming pool areas, creating seamless wall finishes that don’t attract the unsightly mould associated with grout lines.
With a broad range of clients including Rolls Royce, The Armani Hotel and Conran & Partners we’re clearly not alone in our views.
If you’re considering using a specialist surface finish on your next project, contact the Viero team on 0870 609 2827 to discuss your vision. www.viero.co.uk

Scottish five-star resort, Cameron House, has revealed plans for phase two of their ongoing multi-million pound renovation, including an extensive new terrace overlooking Loch Lomond.
Phase two of the refurbishment, due to be completed in May 2017, has commenced at the loch-side retreat. A brand new outdoor terrace is being created to showcase the unique and stunning panoramic views from the hotel, across Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, and will offer guests a greater connection with the natural beauty of the area. A redesign of the hotel’s bedrooms is also underway.
Cameron House has appointed award-winning architecture firm, 3DReid to manage the design and build of the new terrace. It will act as both an alfresco bar area and an outdoor events space and has been designed with material choices and intricate detailing to enhance the existing building at the resort and make the most of the setting.
Frameless glass balustrading to the terrace will ensure views are maximised, with a covered timber deck creating a warmth to the space both from within and when viewed from the surrounding areas. The existing glazing will also be replaced, with doors opening out on the terrace and larger expanses of glass introduced, giving a minimal, contemporary feel.
Phase two of the refurbishment will see Cameron House invest a further £1 million into the resort. Cameron House invested £3 million earlier this year as part of phase one of their ongoing refurbishment, which focussed on revamping the food and beverage offering, including The Cameron Grill and new cocktail bar, along with the hotel’s other public spaces.
Andy Roger, Resort Director said: “We are continuing to invest in Cameron House and are committed to making it the ultimate luxury destination in Scotland. We are truly privileged to have a unique setting that boasts such an abundance of natural beauty. The terrace will bring an exciting new dimension to our offering, with guests able to relax outdoors and take in the stunning panorama.”
The new terrace will accommodate 60 seated or 120 standing and access will be through the Great Scots Bar or via a staircase at the front of the hotel. Jen Samuel, Associate Director at 3DReid said: “The Great Scots Bar has one of the finest views in Scotland, overlooking Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The addition of the terrace allows a greater connection to the great outdoors while expanding the guests experience of the hotel, allowing anything from a Champagne reception in the sun to a warming whisky amongst the snow.”
The Wellesley has appointed Lee Simmons, the visionary artist and designer, and Make Architects, the award-winning architectural practice founded by Ken Shuttleworth, to create a new and bespoke sculptural screen for the front of the hotel that sits opposite Hyde Park Corner.
The artwork will house the hotel’s renowned Cigar Terraces and will provide guests with an oasis to sample some of the world’s finest cigars from Europe’s largest humidor.
The Wellesley has recruited Lee Simmons, a rising star in London’s design scene who has received several high profile commissions since graduating from The Royal College of Art in 2011. Make Architects were chosen specifically for the project due to their outstanding credentials and experience in this area including their work on The Temple House Hotel in Chengdu and The Montpellier Chapter in Cheltenham.
Wellesley Hotel, London.
The building was originally constructed in 1920 to house the Hyde Park Corner Tube Station. It is famous for its original frontage, a distinctive oxblood red tiled façade by Lesley Green and its Art Deco interior which was lovingly restored when the building opened as The Wellesley in 2012. This new project celebrates the façade, whilst granting privacy to the Cigar Terrace’s patrons. Cleverly designed as a functional work of art, the screen will still provide views of Hyde Park from the hotel as well as allowing passers-by to enjoy the historic hotel architecture.
Ken Shuttleworth, Make’s Founding Partner said: “It’s great to expand our portfolio of hospitality work, here in London, especially on such a fantastic heritage building. With their protective panels and permeable screen, the terraces are private and transparent at once. They’re set to make a significant addition to The Wellesley as well as the Belgravia Conservation Area at large – one that reflects the natural beauty of Hyde Park and reveals the character of Knightsbridge’s architectural history.”
Each terrace comprises a transparent structure of clear-glass columns and beams, topped by a fully glazed glass canopy that keeps users dry in all weather conditions. Cantilevered vertical glass panels, allow views of the park but block the wind, while vertical bronze fins, inspired by the avenue of trees along South Carriage Drive provide privacy for back-of-house staff. Enclosing the terraces is a specially commissioned metal screen by artist Lee Simmons. The screen is subtly lit, letting in small pockets of light while also revealing glimpses of the hotel’s celebrated façade.
Lee Simmons says “The concept for the screen was born out of the idea of constructing a surface that reflects and captures an essence of Hyde Park. The piece will be constructed out of 15,000 individual cast metal buds suggestive of flowers. The overall aim of the artwork is for it to enrich the area and encourage the wider public to engage with it. The screen is in keeping with the design ethos of Lesley Green’s original architecture following a circular, reoccurring pattern and with attention to detail being put at the forefront.”
The project is due to start on 1 June 2017 with completion planned for the end of the year.
Architect Andre Fu and his design studio AFSO is working on a number of high profile projects due to unveil this year. Amongst the list of key commissions is the most highly anticipated Villa La Coste, nestled within the poetic Chateau La Coste in Aix en Provence, France.
Set against the Luberon mountains, Château La Coste is an organic winery where visitors can also explore an exceptional art and architecture trail with works by such renowned artists and architects as Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, Richard Serra, Frank Gehry, Louise Bourgeois and Tadao Ando.
Villa La Coste is a brand new purpose-built luxury hotel inside the vineyard that comprises 28 villas and public spaces. Inspired by the true artisanal spirit of the vineyard as well as the breathtaking artistic vision of the chateau, Fu was commissioned to create key destinations within the Hotel, including the Salon, the Bar, the Library and the destination Pavilion Louise Restaurant opening this spring. Fu seeks to instill a ‘contemporary Provençal’ design experience into the project, whilst overlaying his own signature language of ‘relaxed luxury’.
The Library, Salon, Cave Cellar and Bar Located at the garden level of Villa La Coste, Fu’s vision was to craft a sequence of discreetly elegant spaces that would allow guests to lounge and discover. Beginning in the Library with its adjoining Cellar, Salon and Bar, the experience is designed to mirror the sense of being in a private collector’s maison.
Fu has used beautiful solid aged timber wood and brushed Botticino Crema marble to create the sense that while the spaces are contemporary, they are also timeless, a defining feature of so much of Fu’s work. Lighting is soft and subtle, with guests immersed in a candlelight environment in the evening to convey a sensuous sensibility.
The Pavilion Restaurant February 2017 sees the opening of the Pavilion Louise Restaurant by renowned chef Gerald Passedet. Passedet’s restaurant in Marseille, Le Petit Nice has three Michelin stars.
Pavilion Louise, located in a modernist free-standing glass pavilion which appears to float above an extensive water pond, is designed by Fu to celebrate the union of architecture and gastronomy. The centerpiece of the dining room is a prominent sculpture, The Couple, by Louise Bourgeois, is suspended from the ceiling in the centre of the room.
“Chateau La Coste has a very special atmosphere and this has been a remarkable project for me, to work so closely with its owner Paddy McKillen. I saw my role as creating a sense of intimacy, of relaxed luxury, designing these spaces for people rather than as spectacles in themselves.” says Fu of his involvement in the vision for Villa La Coste.
Time for new interpretations: concrete is a natural product that is currently experiencing a renaissance and achieving cult status in both architecture and interior design.
It is now difficult to imagine the design of interior areas and even furniture without the material: concrete cupboards, worktops, consoles and accessories can be used in a variety of ways and is an alternative to traditional materials, such as wood.
Bare concrete walls have become the expression of a new style that concentrates on the essentials – both inside and outside. Particularly the bathroom, concrete is especially effective when combined with white ceramic and Duravit design.
The perfect design platform Concrete is a purely natural product – as is ceramic. Cement made of limestone and clay is mixed with sand or grit and water. Other materials, such as steel, are also added. The properties of the material – heavy or light, fine or rough – can be controlled by adjusting the mixing ratio.
A fine grained concrete wall appears warm with the elegance of sandstone. In this quality, the material is understated – it does not take centre stage and offers the perfect platform for modern bathroom design.
A fitting platform for the ME by Starck series by Duravit: the collection offers pure aesthetics and individual design possibilities. A slender rim that is also found on the washbasin, toilets and urinals serves as a visual design signature. Thanks to its delicate edge, the new, 1300 mm wide double washbasin appears almost rimless and lightweight.
The combination with fine-grained concrete highlights the clear lines and forms of the series.
Fibre-glass elements that allow daylight to shine through are inserted into modern translucent concrete, making the room seem lighter and softer. This light material creates a sense of space in small bathrooms with the ME by Starck handrinse basin.
Aged with structure The coarser the ingredients, the rougher the concrete product. Smaller air inlets also give concrete walls an expressive structure that, when combined with other stone-like materials, such as the Stonetto shower tray by Duravit, create a time worn feeling in the bathroom. The model created by design trio EOOS has a matt finish resembling natural stone.
This is possible thanks to the use of the mineral material DuraSolid Q. Stonetto comes in the typical colours of stone: white, sand and anthracite. Tiny speckles in the finish enhance the natural appearance.
Concrete displays its industrial charm in bathroom interiors with lots of glass and steel. In this clear, architectural surrounding, the Paiova Monolith by Duravit and EOOS brings out the main features. In this version, the typical trapezoid form of the Paiova bath is made from a rectangular monoblock. This makes the acrylic bath an impressive eyecatcher in the bathroom. The bath itself offers plenty of room for two people to bathe side by side and so to relax together in style: with concrete in the bathroom.
The Custom Orion pendant is one of eleven unique and creative designs that form the Chelsom custom lighting range which launched in 2016 as part of the Edition 25 collection.
A true statement centrepiece, Custom Orion features shallow circular LED light sources with Opal acrylic diffusers sandwiched between top and bottom discs supported by randomly positioned arms to give an asymmetric effect.
Clients can specify dimensions and shapes as well as finish. The pendant can be created with a long drop suitable for stairwells and atriums and there is a matching wall light.
Meliá Hotels International has launched its first luxury hotel from the Gran Meliá brand in Brazil with the official opening of Gran Meliá Nacional Rio in March 2017.
Located in Rio de Janeiro’s most exclusive area, São Conrado, Gran Meliá Nacional Rio is one of the most anticipated hotel openings in South America.
Originally built in 1972 by the world renowned architect, Oscar Niemeyer, the famous ‘Hotel Nacional’ has reopened after more than a decade of being left abandoned, as the Gran Meliá brand’s flagship property. Following extensive renovations, the property has been restored to its former glory, maintaining the hotel’s original features, with the modern Spanish flare of the Gran Meliá brand.
Recognised as a national heritage site, Gran Meliá Nacional Rio houses some of Brazil’s most treasured modern art. The entrance of the hotel features the incredible “Painel de Carybé” created by Hector Bernabó (aka Carybé), a painter, sculptor, historian and journalist. The artwork includes 270 individually sculpted concrete slabs depicting classic carioca characters. Burle Marx’s gardens are also a stunning legacy belonging to the hotel and feature 46 species of native Brazilian plants and classic paving stones, known as “calçado”, which have been imported from Portugal.
Roberto Burle Marx was a Brazilian landscape architect whose designs of parks and gardens made him world famous. He is accredited with having introduced modernist landscape architecture to Brazil.Renowned Brazilian interior designer, Débora Aguiar has also designed all of the communal areas of the hotel, including the VIP floor and the rooftop.
Located in the South Zone of the city, Gran Meliá Nacional Rio boasts 413 rooms, from 33 to 300m², including one presidential suites and 66 executive suites. The circular design and glass façade of the property means that guests can enjoy panoramic floor to ceiling views of Rio de Janeiro from both their room or suite and the communal areas.
Led by RPW Design, one of the world’s leading hospitality interior design practices, the London Marriott Hotel County Hall recently re-opened following a multi-million pound transformation of its accommodation and public spaces. The redesigned interiors perfectly combine contemporary hotel design and luxurious functionality. As well as drawing upon the heritage of the building, and the decorative architectural components designed by the building’s original architect, Ralph Knott.
When the County Hall first opened as the headquarters of the local government in 1922, The Noes Lobby was used as the place of adjournment for Council Chamber members voting against a government proposal, whilst those who voted yes would adjourn in the Ayes Lobby. This system is still in use and reflects the voting procedures that take place in Westminster today.
Inspired by this history, the RPW Design team especially designed the oval-shaped bar and arranged the surrounding plush furnishings to ensure the lobby would remain a vibrant hub for social meetings and gatherings. Two statement fireplaces of black Belgian marble stand on both sides, and pannelled walls in polished Indian laurel wood preserve the historical feel of the Council Chamber of County Hall. In order to create a connection between the past and present, modern fabrics and furnishings, including a ribbed glass, metal and faux leather finish of the central bar were used to stylishly update the interior whilst complementing history.
The intimate space of the lobby seamlessly showcases the meticulous redesign by RPW Design, and provides the perfect combination between preserved heritage and a warm ambience through up-lighting and the restored Grade II listed chandeliers. The multifaceted bar serves tea, coffee and pastries in the morning, and champagne and signature cocktails from the afternoon into the late evening.
The London Marriott Hotel County Hall is situated just minutes away from Westminster Bridge in the heart of London, with the Noes Lobby leading off the entrance to the hotel. The hotel’s exceptional design means it now offers guests some of the most spacious rooms in London with incredible riverside views overlooking Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

Thames Valley Park, Reading is home to some of the world’s highest profile companies, including IT giant, Microsoft’s UK headquarters campus.
In the summer of 2016, Signbox was appointed to undertake a full signage audit across this 200 acre business park. Engaged initially by commercial property consultants CBRE, Signbox was tasked with redesigning more than two hundred signs with a brand refresh issued by Microsoft’s corporate communication team in the USA.
The brief included external high-level signage, numerous wayfinding totems, internal reception branding, and an LED illuminated 8 x 2 metre monument sign. All had to meet intelligent detailing that demanded vibrancy with functionality, and precise on-brand consistency. To keep disruption on this busy campus to an absolute minimum, all work was carried out over evenings and weekends over a three month period.
“Working for a global brand as well-known and widely respected as Microsoft, we had to ensure a high level of attention to detail prior to manufacture, accurately reflecting the company’s brand identity,” says Signbox Director Matthew Wilkins. “In order to achieve this, we worked closely with Microsoft’s global HQ, alongside business consultants CBRE. This was a substantial project and given the global prominence of the brand, as well the relative significance of this particular Microsoft location – it was vital that we got it right.”
Says Clodagh Cashman (CBRE): “We have worked with Signbox before, and have found them to be an excellent and reliable partner. We knew we could depend on them to manage this whole project from start to finish, with no inconvenience to us, or to Microsoft. Their professionalism and their attention to detail gave us this confidence, and it proved to be well-founded as they ultimately delivered a finished product that met all of the client’s expectations.”

The Manor Property Group is planning on building a 125-bed luxury hotel and floating restaurant overlooking Bristol’s St Augustine’s Reach as part of a £24m development of the Bordeaux Quay area.
The developer said it was “in discussions” with the Intercontinental Hotel Group-owned Hotel Indigo to launch a boutique hotel as part of a tourist attraction that would also include a “Bristol Eye” and a covered area for market stalls and events. Hotel management would be provided by Interstate Europe Hotels & Resorts.
The site, owned by Bristol City Council has been earmarked for leisure use with the development of a “statement building”. While the planned restaurant space would be literally floating – accessed from a pontoon in St Augustine’s Reach – the hotel would appear to be floating in mid-air, as it would be built on stilts.
The plans, which are the culmination of 18 months work, according to Manor Property Group development director Mark Bailey, have been circulated to city councillors and local interest groups for discussion.

UAE developer Nakheel and leading Thai hotel group Centara Hotels and Resorts has signed a joined venture agreement to create a 550-room, beachfront resort with waterpark at Deira Islands in Dubai.
Under the agreement, cemented in Bangkok, the two companies will deliver an upscale resort on a prime stretch of beach on Deira Islands – Nakheel’s new, 15.3 sq-km, tourism, leisure, retail and entertainment hub that will contribute significantly to the Government of Dubai’s tourism vision.
Nakheel’s joint venture with Centara is the latest development in the company’s aggressive expansion into Dubai’s hospitality sector and its second international joint venture for Deira Islands. The first, an 800-room, AED900 million (£203 million) all-inclusive resort and waterpark with Spain’s RIU Hotels & Resorts, was confirmed in February last year.
As the first Centara establishment in the UAE, the new resort will cover an area of 295,900 sq-ft. Features include a waterpark, dining facilities, business centre, kids’ club, spa and fitness centre. The resort is anticipated to have soft opening in 2019 and grand opening in 2020.
Centara Hotels & Resorts is part of Central Group, one of Thailand’s most prominent family-owned conglomerate holding companies that is involved in merchandising, real estate, retailing, hospitality and restaurants. Centara’ s portfolio currently includes around 14,000 room keys across 65 hotels and resorts under six distinctive brands in Asia, Indian Ocean, and the Middle East.
Nakheel currently has over 5,300 rooms across 16 hotels, resorts and serviced apartments in operation or under development, with the first two – at Dragon Mart and Ibn Battuta Mall – delivered in 2016.
Deira Islands, where Nakheel has already invested more than AED3 billion (£677 million) in infrastructure work, coastal works and design services for a range of new projects, will add 40km, including 21km of beach, to Dubai’s coastline. Nakheel recently completed an AED150 million (£33.8 million) access bridge to the islands, and has just released a tender for the construction of six marinas. The development is expected to have around 250,000, create more than 80,000 new jobs, and offer hundreds of new hotels, serviced apartments and mixed-use buildings, and extensive retail and leisure attractions. Nakheel itself is building 16 residential towers, five hotels, two serviced apartment complexes, Deira Mall, Deira Islands Night Souk and several marinas at the islands.

Since its launch at the end of 2015, this highly water repellent finish has really captured the imagination of Viero’s client base.
Hydro is a Marmorino plaster based on lime putty which is suitable for both internal and external environments. This highly durable product presents excellent characteristics of colour stability, meaning it will not yellow over time, boasts a high water vapour permeability, excellent fire resistance and offers a natural organic appearance, typical of traditional lime based plasters.
Unsurprisingly, Hydro is a popular finish in areas experiencing direct water. This product is perfect for luxury wet rooms, swimming pool areas as well as external elevations.
A professional review Hydro has received some fantastic feedback from not only leading architects and interior designers but also highly skilled craftsmen are using this material on their very own projects. We thought we’d share a review from Faux Creation principle Jason Ebers…
What excites you about this product? Marmorin Hydro is exciting because it has been created expressly for where water flows. It has the same visual impact of other plasters but has a hydrophobic (water repellent) and washable texture that makes it perfect for contemporary wet-rooms and swimming pool areas.
So, we can say goodbye to waterlogged damaged surfaces and moldy corners? Exactly! This plaster has water repellent properties and a sealer that is integral to the finish. It’s not topical and sitting on the surface. It’s an exciting innovation from Viero’s laboratories.
Why is it better than other products on the market? Because it’s lime based and hydrophobic, its look and durability are distinct from other specialist products on the market. Hydro is a slaked lime-based Marmorino plaster containing oxide powder pigments, fine grained marble powders, hydrophobic additives and adhesion promoters. The surfaces can be compacted and polished with a stainless steel trowel to create smooth organic movement or a more open pitted effect depending on design requirements.
It’s a product designed for wet areas but have you used it elsewhere? Yes, we’re using it in all areas of high-end luxury developments from public spaces to exteriors, because of its durability and exterior capabilities there are no areas that we wouldn’t consider using this plaster.
What is the lifetime of this product? Being lime-based, technically it is timeless although additional sealer coats are recommended every 3 to 5 years in wet room areas. We always recommend our Clients book us for maintenance work as we can then ensure that the finish stays looking as good for years to come, and we can control the outcome.
You really put products through their paces in the studio here at Faux Creation, constantly testing and pushing the products to see what can be achieved. Why do you like working with Viero products so much? Viero has a very high quality product range that offers controlled and consistent outcomes and versatility when creating more bespoke artisanal finishes. That’s absolutely critical to Faux Creation.
