Celebrating iconic and well-loved designs from their historic archive, Style Library brand Sanderson launches the Vintage Cushion Collection.
Dating back to the last century these archetypal designs have been recreated in fresh new colourways: Vintage Rose, Peony Brights and Primrose & Dove. Nostalgic yet vibrant; a contemporary way to bring classic florals into the home.
VINTAGE ROSE & PEONY Designed in 1927, Rose & Peony began life as a wallpaper design with 16 colours (a mark of luxury in wallpaper design). It was produced by surface roller printing at the original Sanderson wallpaper factory in Chiswick. In 1930 the design was first printed as a fabric and the pattern has been a Sanderson favourite ever since.
Available in 3 colourways: Vintage Rose, Peony Brights and Primrose/Dove.

Although it may seem like the hotel industry is always a booming one, there is still plenty of marketing that needs to be made, simply because the industry is so competitive.
There are always people looking to travel and stay abroad but only a limited number of places to do so! With this in mind, it’s so important that you create perfect hotel brochures for your potential customers to reference, luring them into everything your hotel has to offer and securing that all-important sale.
To help you get started, here are five steps from Gloria Kopp at Australia Help you need to take to ensure perfection and the highest quality…
Format Properly When it comes to putting all your photos and content together, you can’t just stick it in any old place. You need to make sure everything is nicely laid out and flows properly. You can use tools like Easy Word Count to make sure that your content fits nicely in your brochure and doesn’t exceed your publisher’s word limit and tools like Adobe Spark to create your brochure on your own!
You need to make sure everything is nicely laid out and flows properly…
Create a Captivating Headline The headline of your brochure is the first impression you’re going to make with your customers, so you want to write something that grabs their attention and doesn’t let them go. Imagine your brochure is sitting on a rack with dozens of other brochures. What can you write about your hotel that will make you brochure leap out in front of all the rest? When it comes to writing a headline, be sure to use proper grammar. Otherwise, people will instantly dismiss your hotel due to lack of professionalism. You can check this aspect using tools like State of Writing. Alternatively, if you’re stuck for an idea, use copywriting services like Ukwritings to create your headlines for you.
Utilise the Best Photos Nothing sells a hotel better than the photos that are in the brochure. You can use as many visual words as you want but nothing will sell or create an emotional image in your potential customer’s heads than an actual high-quality image. Whether you’re advertising your actual hotel, the location, the city you’re based in or even activities your hotel provides, use images to really catch your customer’s attention. If you’re stuck and not sure where to look for images, try searching on Pixabay, or use the free templates and images found on Canva.
Nothing will sell or create an emotional image in your potential customer’s heads than an actual high-quality image…
Writing Your Content Of course, the most important part of your sales technique once your customer has actually picked up your brochure is by leading them in further with your written content. This means you need to create an email in your readers head about what their experience is going to be like. For example; “During your stay at **hotel name**, we pride ourselves on doing everything we can to ensure that your stay will create memories that will last a lifetime. Start your day with sweeping views of the beautiful, crystal-clear oceans that roll in a cool sea breeze as you make your way to the intercontinental breakfast. Then, the day is yours to do as you please, but you’ll have complete peace of mind knowing your room is clean and ready for the perfect night’s sleep, ready to start all over again the next day.”
This is a very condensed summary of a hotel, but as you can see, it creates an image in your readers head that will make them want to stay at your hotel, which is, of course, the end goal. If you’re struggling with ideas, you can use content tools like Essay Roo or Academadvisor to help.
The most important part of your sales technique once your customer has actually picked up your brochure is by leading them in further with written content…
Ensure Accuracy If someone is reading through your brochure and it’s full of spelling mistakes, typos and incorrectly formatted sentences, this unprofessional image that you’re giving to your potential customers is going to push them away. To them, if you can’t even spot a spelling mistake in your work, how are you supposed to give them an unforgettable holiday of a lifetime? This means you’re going to need to proofread your brochure as the final thing that you do. If you doubt your proofreading skills, you can always use proofreading tools like Cite It In and Boomessays, so you don’t have to risk poor quality content.
As you can see, there are a number of things you can do to make sure that your brochure stands out from the crowd and has the impact you want it to have. Just make sure you follow this guide and leave no room for error!

As technology continues to evolve and play an increasingly active role in our daily lives, Marriott International has teamed with two leading companies – Samsung and Legrand – to launch the hospitality industry’s first Internet of Things (‘IoT’) hotel room to inspire the ultimate hotel experience of the future.
The IoT Guestroom Lab – powered by Marriott’s Innovation Lab at the company’s corporate headquarters – explores concepts that have the potential to elevate the guest experience, create more efficient hotel room design and construction, and contribute to Marriott’s global sustainability efforts and goals. As the hospitality industry’s “smart” hotel room, the Lab allows multiple responsive IoT systems, devices and applications to communicate with one another to serve guests and optimise hotel operations.
“We know that our guests expect to personalise almost everything in their lives, and their hotel experience should be no different,” said Stephanie Linnartz, Global Chief Commercial Officer, Marriott International. “By teaming with best-in-class partners, we are leveraging mobile and voice-enabled technology to give our guests the ability to set up the room to best meets their needs – whether that is creating the ultimate relaxation environment or one that enables productivity for business travelers.”
“At Samsung, we aspire to make life easier and better for our consumers, whether they’re at home or their home away from home,” said James Stansberry, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ARTIK IoT, Samsung Electronics. “Partnering with Legrand and Marriott, we can offer users unprecedented levels of control and personalisation, thanks to our end-to-end IoT services powered by the ARTIK platform and the SmartThings Cloud. From intuitive lighting to voice-activated room controls, we’re delivering customisable, intelligent experiences that make our consumers’ lives more convenient, productive and secure.”
Developing an intuitive system is critical as Marriott seeks to continuously innovate the global guest experience across its 30 brands. The technology inside the IoT Guestroom Lab allows, for instance, a user to ask a virtual assistant for a 6:30am wake-up alarm, to start a yoga routine on a full-length mirror, request additional housekeeping services and start the shower at the desired temperature stored in their customer profile – all by voice or app.
“We’re proud to be innovating with industry leading partners to get closer to revolutionising the guest experience, along with hotel operations and even hotel construction,” said Karim Khalifa, Senior Vice President, Global Design, Marriott International. “Together with Samsung and Legrand, we are well on our way to creating the hotel room of the future.”
“At Legrand, we offer a suite of power, light and data solutions that bring power and connectivity to previously untapped locations. Legrand is partnering with Marriott to improve the guest experience in a cost effective and intuitive manner. This work further supports our Eliot Program in North America, Legrand’s global IoT program that encompasses our ambition, drives our product innovation and fosters our partnership in the IoT space,” said Ken Freeman, Senior Vice President of Demand Creation, Legrand. “Legrand’s product portfolio can elevate a property by turning everyday features into lasting highlights. We are thrilled to collaborate with Marriott and Samsung to conceptualise and deliver on the future traveler’s needs.”
Marriott is working towards a future where hotel owners would have a seamless, transparent and flexible end-to-end solution that requires minimal equipment, while customers would enjoy an integrated experience with access to their own data and information, as well as accessible voice and mobile-optimised controls. Such systems would also benefit hotel operations and improve personalised service by, for instance, allowing staff to provide services at a guest’s desired time.
Following the three-month-long IoT Guestroom Lab, Marriott, Samsung and Legrand will analyse feedback to continue innovating with IoT technology. Consumers will start to see elements of the technology in hotel rooms within the next five years.

In Spring 2018, YTL Hotels UK’s newest property Monkey Island Estate will open in the historic village of Bray-on-Thames, Berkshire. The island, with an intriguing history dating back 800 years, has been the haunt of monarchs, aristocrats and artists, along with writers, famous performers and Berkshire locals.
Monkey Island has constantly reflected the mood of the time, from medieval religious power, serene Georgian privilege or restrained Edwardian leisure – even the joyous freewheeling 1960s. Alongside its unique early 18th century fishing retreats built by the Duke of Marlborough with their famous monkey artworks, it has been immortalised in one of the great works of early 20th century literature, published its own journal and, for the last 180 years, provided some of Britain’s most unique hospitality.
Following YTL’s superb renovation, visitors from London and beyond will yet again have their very own private countryside escape to enjoy. The striking white bricked Pavilion and Temple buildings will now make up the main hotel areas of YTL’s Monkey Island Estate, surrounded by picturesque views of the River Thames and beautifully manicured gardens.
Set across seven acres, the restored Monkey Island Estate will consist of 27 bedrooms and three deluxe suites, all designed by the award-winning New York-based Champalimaud Design, who orchestrated distinctive interior design projects for YTL’s first British property, The Gainsborough Bath Spa, as well as Green Leaf Niseko Village and the most recently launched Ritz Carlton, Koh Samui. The furnishings of Monkey Island will juxtapose timeless glamour and traditional features with a modern, relaxed countryside style, creating a unique blend of past and present.
Monkey Island will be the perfect retreat for those wanting to take a foodie pilgrimage to the culinary excellence of Bray. The only village in the world that lays claim to two three Michelin-starred restaurants, including Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck and the Roux brothers’ Waterside Inn, Bray has long been a destination for gastronomic-enthusiasts. Monkey Island will also be making its own mark on the area with their relaxed Monkey Island Brasserie serving up modern British cuisine.
Steeped in stylish yet laid back luxury, Monkey Island will be the perfect spot for weekend escapes from the city, weddings and romantic breaks. For those who want to enjoy Bray-on-Thames in comfort and style, the hotel will be the ideal retreat to experience the rejuvenation of this historic landmark to its full former glory.

Located in the thriving Business Bay district, which was recently listed in Lonely Planet’s ‘10 of the World’s coolest neighborhoods to visit right now,’ the new Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai boasts 298 guestrooms, including 65 sprawling suites. Inspiring a sense of spontaneous discovery at every turn, the latest in the brand’s portfolio set the stage for inspiring stories that are worth retelling.
“The spectacular new Renaissance Downtown Hotel in Dubai is a highly anticipated addition to our rapidly growing portfolio in the region,” said Alex Kyriakidis, President and Managing Director Middle East and Africa, Marriott International. “With its artful design, vibrant and eclectic dining scene and engaging experiences, the hotel embraces the spirit of Dubai as a one-of-a-kind destination and Renaissance as a global lifestyle brand that inspires guests to discover something wonderfully new every time they travel. We are confident it will soon emerge as the newest lifestyle destination for global travelers as well as local residents.”
Raw yet Refined: Renaissance’s Dramatic Design Shows a Different Side of Dubai Led by the renowned interior firm WA International, the hotel’s design thrives from stark contrasts created through materiality, different textures and a dynamic color palette. Inspired by the fluidity of Dubai’s iconic sand dunes, matte hues of black and gold are woven throughout the public spaces and guestrooms – seemingly in motion when seen through pebbled glass and unfinished mirrored surfaces.
Upon arrival, a metallic art installation depicting the dynamic cityscape of Dubai takes center-stage. Overhead, an impressive hand-blown glass chandelier spans the length of the lobby, enticing guests to explore further. Floor to ceiling golden chains frame unpolished concrete at check-in, while a walk through the lobby reveals natural wood finishes, exposed ironwork beams, and an unexpected warmth fueled by the open fireplace.
Inspired Accommodations Provide a License to Play Every moment thoughtfully-designed to tell a story: installations above each corridor appear as golden waves connoting the desert as wind passes through, juxtapose the wall coverings that have a dry and cracked effect. Each of the 298 spectacular guestrooms and suites boast floor to ceiling windows, allowing natural light and creating playful shadows against hues of deep blue and pale greys. The sumptuous fabrics, sandy color leather accents and natural wood finishes complement the matte gold and metal hardware that theatrically changes throughout the day with the movement of natural light.
Guests are greeted by a close-up black and white photograph of a camel smirking; and above the bed, Pablo Picasso’s famed camel sketch is reimagined into a cheeky, 3D iron rod sculpture – both playful jests to reframe your stay.
World-Acclaimed Chefs Set the Stage for Culinary Excellence Culinary outlets at Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai – BHAR, Grounded, BASTA!, Bleu Blanc and Morimoto Dubai – are set to become highlights of the city’s prominent and bustling food scene.
A contemporary dining experience offering indigenous Middle Eastern cuisine and shared dining atmosphere, BHAR, the Arabic word for spice, is designed to awaken the senses and will debut as the hotel opens its doors. Alongside the opening of BHAR, Grounded will serve as the hotel’s premiere coffee shop with unique brewing methods from a variety of international beans.
Launching in November, BASTA! and Bleu Blanc are two new contemporary concepts by David Myers. Bleu Blanc is a Southern French farmhouse-inspired restaurant where a large, wood-fired grill area takes centre stage, offering guests the chance of an up-close and personal chef’s table experience. BASTA! transports diners to an urban interpretation of a Roman trattoria, Florentine steakhouse and Neapolitan pizzeria, reflecting David’s personal travel memories from these regions. Both venues will showcase beverage programs designed by world-renowned mixologist Sam Ross.
Opening in December, Morimoto Dubai will display internationally acclaimed celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto’s contemporary Japanese cuisine, infusing traditional dishes with Western ingredients and preparation methods. The restaurant’s expansive space will include three private dining rooms and terraces with undisturbed views of the Burj Khalifa.
In December, the hotel will also open the first of its kind, all-suite spa concept from renowned Six Senses. With a design rooted heritage of balancing all of the senses, Six Senses Spa will feature six treatment suites that are each dedicated to a different sense – sight, sound, touch, taste, smell and intuition – to offer the perfect balance of calm and sensory experiences in the bustling downtown area.
Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai will feature all of the brand’s unique experiences, including Evenings at Renaissance where guests can connect, socialize, and experience the locale through nightly programming. For the true social discoverer, the hotel’s Navigators will help guests experience the neighborhood’s soul by highlighting hidden gems and handpicked local discoveries.
Boråstapeter is highlighting some of 2018’s biggest trends in colours, with the launch of a new selection of wallpapers as part of its new Deep Sea Dive serie.
Available for a limited time, the serie boasts a collection of single-coloured wallpapers with a matt finish.

“From 2018, Boråstapeter will be launching annual series that showcase the colour trends for each coming year. This year, we’ve taken inspiration from the beauty of the ocean depths, with colours running from a deep navy blue through to a light pink, vibrant green and playful yellow,” said Noomi Spange, designer at Boråstapeter.
“The serie is a feast for the eyes, combining the crackling colours of the coral reefs with the obscure darkness of billowing waves. It’s a perfect opportunity to incorporate dynamic, on-trend colours into your interiors.”
Deep Sea Dive will make its debut in February 2018, alongside the Pigment wallpaper collection, which will boast 40 single-coloured wallpapers.
Spange added: “With paint colours, it’s often the case that the sample you see in the paint shop isn’t a perfect representation of the finished result.
“Not here. Each colour is exactly as you chose it, which makes it easier to plan your interiors and ensure there’s some interplay with the other materials and furnishings in a space.”
World-famous architect Jean-Michel Gathy has revealed what he values most when designing a space; colour.
Gathy’s signature designs have inspired many leading architectural works, which are showcased in a list of some of the most recognised hotels and resorts including the One&Only Reethi Rah, Cheval Blanc Randheli; Maldives, St. Regis Lhasa; Tibet, Viceroy Snowmass; Aspen Colorado, Park Hyatt Sanya Sunny Bay; Sanya, The Chedi Andermatt; Switzerland, Aman Canal Grande; Venice, Amanwana; Moyo Island Indonesia and Aman Summer Palace; Beijing, Amanyara; Turks & Caicos, and The Setai in Miami, Florida.
Born in Belgium, Gathy founded Denniston in 1983, an architecture firm with a specific niche market, where he specialises in the creation of innovative designs for up-market hotels and other establishments in the industry. Thanks to its forward thinking architecture, design and technology applications in a constant state of evolution, DENNISTON has been able to retain its position as the market leader and a reference point for all designers in the industry.
With a career that has spanned almost four decades, Gathy shares his top five reasons why utilising colour is an important element when designing a space.
Colour Creates Mood: When it comes to selecting the colour palette for a space, Gathy stresses that colour is a very powerful element that can set the tone for a room. “Colour has an immediate effect on mood—the ability to calm or invigorate—and creates energy and depth of field,” says Gathy. “It’s a powerful thing, and used intelligently, it can be a beacon for inspiration.”
Say No to Monotone: Gathy advises that one should steer clear of tonal colour palettes as they don’t add enough excitement. “Too much tone on tone is quite boring. The colours you choose do not always have to match, but should rather complement one another,” adds Gathy.
Messaging is Everything: Colour can send a strong message to guests and Gathy suggests taking the intention behind the colour palette in your home very seriously. “Colour has an immediate and enormous effect on the atmosphere. If you enter a dark home, your mood instantly changes,” says Gathy. Choosing colour schemes that carry the message you want to convey in your home will ensure that guests inherently understand your personality and overall aesthetic.
Proportion is Key: Bold colours and patterns are great to use, but in moderation. Gathy advises that colour proportion must be appropriate to the palette and pleasant to the eye. “Be careful not to over-mix patterns, otherwise they’ll start to compete with each other. Offset patterns with neutral breaks to create balance so the eye isn’t challenged. For example, if you have busy, multi-coloured pillows, opt for a more streamlined geometrical rug in black and white or tones of beige. Grounding the room with neutrals means you can add colourful highlights in the way of pillows, throw blankets, and rugs,” advises Gathy.
Cohesive Connection: Adhering to unique themes in each room can work well, but it’s important to maintain a sense of continuity throughout suggests Gathy. “The beauty of decorating a home is that each room can look and feel distinctive, so you can use a different colour scheme in every space if you choose. The trick is to create cohesiveness by choosing complementary colours where rooms connect,” says Gathy.

The hotel industry is being urged to embrace the future of tech as artificial intelligence, or AI, becomes more and more sophisticated. The world around us is continuing to change, but taking the next step into the developing technological landscape can be daunting. The team at Hotel Owner have revealed their top three ways AI could change the way you recruit staff.
No more bias Getting rid of the human element means removing any factors we may subconsciously consider, taking candidates at the face value of their CV. An advanced computer system won’t discriminate against age, gender, race or creed and will only look at a recruits skills and ability.
Spend less time An algorithm can scan and read applications in a fraction of the time a person would, freeing up your team’s time that would otherwise be spent sifting through hundreds of irrelevant applications. AI can be put to use at every point of recruitment, helping to reduce CV applications, sort into categories, and even help reference check.
Staying consistent Artificial intelligence will work to the same rules at all times, again reducing the human error. Different recruiters will regularly priorities and pick up on different aspects of applications, while an AI will stick to its parameters without having to worry about whether or not they’re feeling grumpy or sleepy.

Green Tourism has detailed its latest ‘Green Check’ offering for tourism businesses seeking a sustainability award.
Kicking off on November 13th, the sustainability check will run until the end of January next year, which will see Green Tourism offer businesses a pre-assessment review.
The ‘Green Check’ will include a series of questions taken from the Green Tourism rating system, which will give companies an idea of where they sit on their journey to be more green.
Businesses will then be given guidance and advice on how they can achieve an award.
Andrea Nicholas, MD of Green Tourism, said: “There is much evidence that consumers, particularly Generation Y, are motivated by ethical consumption. We can certainly back that up by the experiences of those who currently hold a Green Tourism award,” reports Boutique Hotelier.
“Not only are award holders able to communicate clear and compelling differentiation, they are also benefiting from real cost savings by taking on board the advice of our assessors.”
2017 marks Green Tourism’s 20th anniversary, and has launched the initiative as part of its overall strategy to build on the sustainable movements of over 2,000 tourism companies.

Global luxury travel network Virtuoso has determined 2018 will be the year for discovering less-visited destinations. Virtuoso’s 2018 Luxe Report, which forecasts what to expect in travel for the year ahead, shows the desire for unspoiled natural beauty continuing to motivate travellers.
The annual report, which has firmly established Virtuoso as a recognized trend spotter, reveals consumer preferences in high-end and experiential travel, as discerned from a comprehensive survey of the network’s travel advisors worldwide.
Five must-take trips for 2018, according to Virtuoso advisors:
– Cold is hot. Seasoned travelers in search of fresh destinations are setting their sights on chillier climes. Iceland continues to surge in popularity, placing high in several Luxe Report categories this year. Cruisers are enthusiastic about Alaska, and adventurers about Antarctica and the Arctic. One trip of a lifetime mentioned by Virtuoso’s expert advisors: seeing the Northern Lights.
– Exploring new destinations. This is the year’s top trip motivator, and travelers are embracing the opportunity to push beyond their comfort zone. Virtuoso advisors suggest that people check out at least one new place a year, and challenge themselves to try something unexpected during their sojourn: swim with marine life like dolphins or mantas, go zip-lining or ballooning, or take a helicopter tour.
– Connecting with family through travel. After topping the list of trends since 2010, multigenerational travel has firmly established itself as a travel niche. Following close behind is travel with immediate family, also a consistent trend that will carry forward in 2018. Whether renting a European villa for a celebration with loved ones, cruising to the Galapagos Islands, or snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef, a family trip creates lifelong memories, strengthens bonds, and plays a pivotal role in childhood education.
– Experience Africa. From culturally rich South Africa, also 2018’s top adventure destination, to the wilds of Botswana and Kenya, to the souks of Morocco, Africa is one of the world’s most diverse continents. Virtuoso’s advisors say a safari is an integral part of the African experience, particularly with wildlife preservation a priority for today’s sustainably savvy travelers.
– Be a traveler rather than a tourist. Immersive experiences not found in a guidebook or brochure, opportunities to meet locals, wandering neighborhoods and making spontaneous discoveries are the best ways to experience a destination, according to Virtuoso advisors. Whether it is wine tasting, or learning a traditional craft or a new language, travelers will be seeking out the true culture of that area they are visiting.
The desire for experiences that foster genuine human connection is a key driver for today’s travelers. No activity is too unusual for the clients of Virtuoso travel advisors, as some of the more surprising requests show. Travelers are asking for everything from reaching the edge of space in a MiG-29 flight in Russia, to herding cattle in Australia, to hosting a celebration in a private capsule aboard the London Eye. They also seek rare accommodations such as an igloo in Norway, a private castle all to themselves, and sleeping under the stars in the desert – no tent required.
With the focus on far-flung exotic destinations in 2018, it is not surprising that luxury travelers are embarking on international trips of two weeks or longer, which are seeing strong demand. Week-long international trips and three- to five-day domestic trips continue to be popular as well. What is surprising, though, is that Virtuoso advisors also noted more interest in shorter international trips, such as Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands in less than a week. Conversely, some travelers are requesting longer trips of three to five weeks.

The site for a new £90 million hospitality hub in Croydon, developed by LHG (London Hotel Group) and designed by award-winning hotel architects Dexter Moren Associates, was included as one of the strategic projects in a study tour organised by New London Architecture.
Local stakeholders, including council representatives, occupiers, developers and investors, enjoyed a walking tour of the Growth Zone in Croydon and were offered an insight into how this major investment by LHG will act as a catalyst for regeneration of the area.
Located at 585-603 London Road, the new hospitality hub features high-quality contemporary design that is both striking and responsive to its neighbourhood. Framing elements, balconies and setbacks at top floors have been introduced to provide architectural articulation to each block, whilst a varied roofscape reflects the rhythm of the Victorian properties in the area.
The architectural design has been dovetailed with the landscape strategy to provide spaces of a human scale that will improve the experience of guests as well as local residents. The public realm will be further enhanced by a new landscaped public piazza and will bring about a significant improvement to London Road.

Herbert Lui, Project Director, Dexter Moren Associates: “Looking back at the first sketch, it has been an exciting journey with LHG and the design team to arrive at a planning-consented scheme that we are really proud of. The architecture is bold, punchy and complementary to the urban scale and context. We are also pleased with the public realm spaces that create a socially inclusive and inviting setting along London Road.”
The first of the Mayor’s Growth Zones, the London Borough of Croydon is currently experiencing £350 million worth of investment and its burgeoning reputation as a tech hub has recently seen the Borough identified as the UK’s fastest growing economy. The scheme will not only provide high-quality guest accommodation currently lacking in the area but also bring about an improvement to the townscape on this stretch of London Road, re-energising the corridor between Thornton Heath and Central Croydon.
The scheme will involve the demolition of three existing hotels – the Ibis Styles, Gilroy Court Hotel and Croydon Court Hotel, with a combined total of 256 rooms – to be replaced by a four and five-storey 435-room hotel and 158-room aparthotel with dining, conference and leisure facilities.
The proposed masterplan for the scheme by Dexter Moren was positively received by local residents and was granted unanimous approval by the local council in May 2017. Construction of the new hospitality hub will commence in the second quarter of 2018.
The British Hospitality Association (BHA) has criticised plans announced by the Greater London Assembly (GLA) to introduce a ‘bed tax’ for hotel rooms in the capital.
The London Assembly Economy Committee met this week to further discuss the tax which experts predict could add up to £364 million a year to the UK economy.
The plans were first introduced in January, described as a “Berlin-style tax of 5% of the room rate per night”. It could potentially increase accommodation prices by £3.40.
Ufi Ibrahim, chief executive of the BHA, said: “The London tourism tax will unfairly penalise hard-pressed Britons, who make up the overwhelming proportion of visitors to London. Sadiq Khan has proclaimed “London is Open”, yet is backing a tax on anyone coming for a weekend break in the capital, professionals going about their business and holidaymakers with their families.
“It’s a tax on fun and business. This isn’t just about top end hotels, it’s about hard working people on budget breaks too. This levy threatens our industry, which is the lifeblood of the UK’s economy, employing over half a million people in London, and generating an estimated £57bn to the UK’s GDP.”
She added: “Hospitality and tourism are highly price sensitive, and domestic and international visitors have significant destination choice, as do business tourism, event organisers and investors. Domestic tourists in the UK already pay one of the highest rates of tax in Europe and the World Economic Forum currently ranks the UK 135 out of 136 countries in terms of tourism tax competitiveness.”

Set to be complete in spring 2018, famed Danish architect Arne Jacobsen’s only hotel, the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Copenhagen, is in the final stages of its extensive renewal and modernisation.
The world-famous landmark is undergoing a major redesign and already now, the entire meeting space, the new Café Royal Restaurant, the entire lobby and most of the guest rooms are renovated. Award-winning Danish design company SPACE Copenhagen is responsible for the design and in spring 2018, the entire hotel will be completely renewed.
In 1960, the legendary Danish architect Arne Jacobsen designed the entire ‘Royal Hotel’, from the façade through to the famed EGG chair and even the cutlery.
“By combining functionality and sophisticated design, our aim is to revive the iconic heritage of Arne Jacobsen. We carefully protect the legacy whilst at the same time modernise and add in new design elements to meet the expectations of a new generation of travelers”, explains Brian Gleeson, General Manager of the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Copenhagen.
Some of Arne Jacobsen’s lesser known design classics have been revived, such as his Giraffen dining table in the restaurant and the rare Pot chair which is now to be found in the lobby. In addition, the Arne Jacobsen ‘Mayor’ sofa, drawing upon Danish tradition for fine wood, is both in the suites and in the new restaurant.
All the new meeting rooms are named after Arne Jacobsen’s design classics, such as the ‘EGG’ chair, designed especially for this very same hotel back in 1960. The walled artwork in the modernized meeting spaces were brought from the hotels archives and have been reframed to let the guests relive the rich legacy of the hotel.
Room 606 – one of the world’s most famous hotel rooms and a key stop on design-aficionado’s Copenhagen pilgrimages – will remain untouched and kept exactly as it was originally designed by Arne Jacobson.
Brian Gleeson commented: “Room 606 is a living proof of our heritage and is open for anyone who would like to experience Arne Jacobsen’s design and immerse themselves in Danish modernism. By interpreting our iconic heritage, we aim to recreate this legendary building and escalate it to new heights for the future”.

Hamilton Park Racecourse has unveiled plans for a multi-million pound hotel development on its grounds, with a formal planning application made to South Lanarkshire Council. The prestigious venue aims to open a hotel on the site on the town’s Bothwell Road for the first time in its 90-year history.
The 118-guestroom property, operating under Hilton’s fastest growing brand, Hampton by Hilton, is to be built on what is currently the main public car park of the racecourse grounds.
The £10 million project will bring up to 20 new jobs to the racecourse, doubling the current number of employees, with a variety of roles in managerial, professional, customer service and administrative positions.
The Hamilton Park executive team has undertaken extensive feasibility studies into the development and projects it will generate an additional £5.9million per year in additional visitor expenditure in the area, and add a gross value of £700,000 per year to the economy, with £400,000 of that directly in South Lanarkshire.
The hotel, which has been designed by local practice, ICA Architects, is expected to double the size of the racecourse’s business within three years of opening. Vivien Currie, Chief Executive at Hamilton Park Racecourse, said: “We are delighted to unveil this landmark project for Hamilton Park Racecourse and are certain it will deliver substantial benefits to our business and the wider economy.
“The project has been driven by both public demand, largely from our local customer base, not only for racedays but for weddings and other events, and from our racing personnel. With an onsite hotel, Hamilton Park Racecourse will further enhance its reputation as a wide-ranging, world-class sporting and hospitality attraction, whilst also providing a fantastic facility for racing staff when they visit Hamilton Park for our 18 race meetings.
“We are constantly competing with racecourses further south to attract top trainers and jockeys. Having an onsite modern Hampton by Hilton hotel for them to stay in will add to the host of benefits and incentives we offer to racing connections to ensure we stage top quality racing here in Hamilton. Our prize money increased by 15per cent this past season and now it’s time to invest again in our facilities and attract new visitors.
A great deal of planning has been put into the design of the hotel, which will be constructed in a modular fashion, and proposals have been developed in such a way that the project will cause minimal disruption to the area.
Graham Dodd, Senior Director, Development, UK & Ireland, Hilton said: “Hampton by Hilton has grown rapidly since being introduced to Scotland last year. We will soon have six hotels operating under the brand in four key locations across Scotland and we look forward to welcoming guests to Hamilton and its racecourse in the coming years.”

Manchester is going through somewhat of a renaissance in the hotel industry.
Recent openings – including Hotel Gotham – have put the critical and commercial spotlight on the city, drawing some of the attention usually hogged by the capital down south. During this wave of stylish, quirky and conceptual openings came a project by former Manchester United stalwarts Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs – Hotel Football.
Its location overlooking the club’s iconic Old Trafford stadium, affectionately known as the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, might suggest this is a haven just for followers of this particular megaclub. Far from it.
Any supporter of the ‘Beautiful Game’ will be pleasantly surprised by the ubiquitous football-themed touches throughout – like a mural of great footballing memories accompanying guests on their ascent or descent of the main staircase, the stadium-esque facilities for the gentlemen’s toilets in the Old Trafford Supporters Club in the hotel’s basement or the guestroom bathroom design, with a nod to football changing rooms. Most of the hotel art, too, was commissioned by the hotel and made by University of Salford students.
The interiors are modern and slick, if not slightly ‘corporate’ at times. But make no mistake, the attention to detail is prevalent throughout – and despite this being a ‘themed’ hotel, guest comfort and satisfaction has not been overlooked.
Given the market this hotel is undoubtedly looking to tap into, the corporate and event spaces are excellent appointed and have the ability to cater for various-sized parties. The Owners Room and The Boardroom for smaller meetings, to the Stadium Suite and Players’ Lounge, which can take up to 500 people and match-day hospitality is also available.
The hotel has been well pitched – it is consciously not too over-the-top in being Manchester United-themed (considering the disdain with which some football supporters perceive the club), but rather more focused on football as a whole. The staff throughout the property are also commendably friendly and helpful; whether or not they are Manchester United fans seems irrelevant as they all appear to be genuinely invested in the success of the project. Overall, this is a hotel that knows its USP, does what it says on the tin and does it well. It’s fun, quirky and different – definitely another success story for the Manchester hotel scene.

According to 2016 research from OpenKey, the average 200-room hotel produces approximately 12,000 non-biodegradable plastic key cards each year which is equivalent to 1,300 tons of plastic waste annually.
That is a lot of waste to end up in landfills each year. Consumer demand for ditching the key is higher than ever. According to the infographic below from Stanley Security, 73% of guests would prefer to skip the front desk. Find out more research findings below…
The north west’s exciting new boutique hotel, The Spinning Block at Holmes Mill in Clitheroe, is due to open this month.
The 38-bedroom hotel, along with the Bistro, Bar and Grill – which is taking bookings from Saturday November 4 – forms the latest phase in the £10 million redevelopment of what was a largely derelict textile mill.
In keeping with the rest of the mill, the hotel will be stylish and imaginatively designed while remaining sympathetic to the building’s heritage. James’ Places interiors guru Christine Lee explained: “The look is what we call ‘opulent industrial’. It is art nouveau with a feminine, indulgent look featuring beautiful, flowing lines.”
The bedrooms continue the pared back, urban tone reflecting the rest of Holmes Mill, with a luxurious, light and airy atmosphere. The Bar, Bistro and Grill is similarly styled, with art nouveau features and authentic textures giving a nod to the building’s roots.
Operations manager Andrew Bailey said: “Holmes Mill is already proving to be a very popular wedding venue and the hotel means families and couples can base everything for their big day around the site.
“We also expect the hotel to appeal to those attending an event at the mill, or in central Clitheroe, who wish to stay over. In addition, corporate customers will find the hotel a useful addition to our multi-use function room,” he added.
From human rights protections to sustainable hotel development, Marriott International has now launched a new sustainability and social impact initiative designed to foster business growth while balancing the needs of associates, customers, owners, the environment and communities.
Under Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction, Marriott’s new Sustainability and Social Impact Platform seeks to continue the company’s 90-year commitment to the communities it serves, the planet and people worldwide.[CRF_Form id=’1′]
“As the global hospitality leader with properties and associates across 125 countries and territories, Marriott International has a global responsibility and unique opportunity to be a force for good in all aspects of our business – from helping to reduce carbon and water use to providing our associates with human trafficking awareness training,” said Ray Bennett, Chief Global Officer, Global Operations at Marriott International and Serve 360 Executive Leadership Council Co-Chair. “We recognize that how we do business is as important as the business that we do. Incorporating environmental and social initiatives, including human rights awareness training, into our business is not only the right thing to do, it has a direct impact on our profits and beyond.”
Guided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, Marriott created Serve 360 to guide the company’s commitment and deliver positive results through four priority areas or “coordinates”:
– Nurture Our World – Advancing the resiliency and development of our communities. – Sustain Responsible Operations – Reducing the company’s environmental impacts, sourcing responsibly and building and operating sustainable hotels. – Empower Through Opportunity – Helping people prepare for jobs in the hospitality industry. – Welcome All & Advance Human Rights – Creating a safe and welcoming world for associates and travelers alike.
Marriott’s new goals are being woven into the company across continents, from its global development organizations to its global supply chain networks. Some of the company’s commitments by 2025 include:
– Reduce water by 15%, carbon by 30%, waste by 45% and food waste by 50% – Contribute 15 million associate volunteer hours, 25% of which will be skills-based, to capitalize on personal talents and core business skills – Train 100% of associates to know the signs of human trafficking – Embed human rights criteria in recruitment and sourcing policies
“Building off our 2007 Sustainability goals, Marriott is proud to issue our next generation of goals, inclusive of social and human rights targets to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” said Tricia Primrose, Global Chief Communications Officer at Marriott International and Serve 360 Executive Leadership Council Co-Chair. “Associates and customers want to work for and do business with a company that aligns with their values and drives positive community impact. We are proud to be part of the solution,” she added.
It’s been 210 years since British hospitality firm Thwaites was conceived by its namesake, Daniel. His mission was delivering fine hospitality alongside fine ale.
His company has come a long way from its roots in the Lake District, recently named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. About 200 miles, to be precise – to Fareham, home of its farthest-flung spa hotel.
The newest addition to Thwaites’ destinations – the AA Hotel Group of the Year winners 2016-17 – is The Lodge at Solent, a 54-suite development with sincere leanings towards its closeness to the sea.
The Lodge at Solent is a funky and refreshing take on the motel concept, delivering an experience beyond expectations. From its Art Deco arrow delivering guests to the right place – The Lodge at Solent lies adjacent to Solent Hotel & Spa, its premium cousin – you surf into a welcoming lobby featuring a double-height mural leaving you in no doubt you’re almost beside the seaside.
A lighthouse and a VW camper, seminal accessory for every beach lover, take up the majority of this colourful, exciting design. This mighty mural is from Bristol-based artist Jody Thomas.
Rooms themselves are by Rachel Wootton, Thwaites own interior designer, who has created a stir elsewhere in the company’s property chain including at new-build hotels, contemporary inns, and at flagship alehouses across the country.
Corridors cede to ravishing rooms boasting both classic and contemporary touches that excite the senses and leave guests in the mood for fun. Seagull footprints in specially-commissioned carpeting lead guests to their room, ably abetted by striking seaside signage.
Rachel explained: “We wanted to go for a style that oozes sunshine and seaside, but at the same time nods to our Britishness. You’ll find classic telephones by the bedside, and some stunning works of art that make our guests feel both at home and on holiday.”
The lodge’s exterior polishes the experience largely comprising cedar wood which promises to stay sturdy against the elements. Salty air and sustainability do not bedmates make and Thwaites has been shrewd selecting this natural cladding to help the lodge retain its elegance long into the future.
Nakul Sharma is the CEO and founder of Hostmaker, London’s biggest Airbnb management company – and here he describes why he believes homestays and staying in a hotel are different sides of the same coin…
Over the last few years, homestays have become increasingly popular, with the explosion of companies such as Airbnb making these options a more convenient and cheaper way of staying in the world’s major cities. But does this explosion in popularity of homestays challenge the traditional hoteling industry or rather does it create a situation where the two can help each other?
Having worked in both the traditional hospitality industry and the property sharing sector, I can safely tell you that these two seemingly competing industries are actually more compatible then first glance might suggest. They are two sides of the hospitality coin, catering for different people with different and often complimenting strengths and weaknesses.
The main difference between the two is cost and the space available to enjoy a longer stay. Homestays generally tend to be lower in price than traditional hotels. As a result, they encourage travellers who would have maybe stayed for two-three nights in a hotel to stay longer and experience more of a destination. They are also preferred by a large group of people, or travellers looking for a room for month. Hotels are mainly tailored to the needs of an individual business traveller and aim to be efficient. Couples or groups travelling for leisure have very different needs. Rather than stealing clientele away from hotels, they are filling the gap in the market.
These two forms of hospitality also tackle the complications that come with very short or very long trips. Homestays provide much more flexibility, giving guests the option to stay for 3, 30 or 300 days, depending on their circumstances. Hotels are great for families or individuals looking to stay in one place for a few nights, but it can quickly become cumbersome when you want to move about or stay for an extended period.
By staying with a local through a homestay, travellers get a difference experience of the city. Before you would have had to explore a city with little or no knowledge, armed only with a guide book and relying on the hotel concierge. However, staying with a local offers guests a different perspective on a city and its culture. This is not something that everyone would like to experience as many people are happy to explore the city alone and enjoy the main attractions. Again, those that would have originally stayed in hotels are unlikely to migrate to homestays due to the fact that they are more interested in the comparative comfort of a hotel.
Many often say that they choose hotels for the luxury service and the knowledge that they can come and go without worrying about waking up their hosts or collecting their keys at a certain time. However, it is possible to replicate this service within the homestay market. Management companies, such as Hostmaker, have been able to bridge this gap in the market and provide a Hilton level experience to a regular homestay, offering a 5-star experience for guests and alleviating the pressure from the host.
Homestays often also offer unique properties. Treehouses, caravans and cabins are just a few of the types of accommodation you may find yourself in. For some people, the chance of a unique stay in an unusual location is an adventure, but others may be filled with a sense of dread. When you stay in a hotel, there is a standard that many people expect and more often than not, they receive. With a homestay, however, especially one in a quirky location, it can be very hard to determine. Those with a more adventurous streak may opt to go for a homestay but many people would still feel more comfortable with a traditional hotel.
So, when we discuss the future of hospitality, homestays are certainly part of it and a quickly growing part of it, but the demand for hotels is unlikely to be affected by the growth of this sharing economy industry. Both hotels and homestays occupy similar areas in the hospitality industry but by no means are their target market the same. Homestays do not have the capacity to steal the business of hotels and hotels cannot offer the individual experiences that homestays can. Rather than conflict, the two dovetail to offer customers different experiences to cater to individuals tastes.

The Langley will join a growing ensemble of over 100 Luxury Collection hotels and resorts around the world. Owned and managed by City & Country Hotels, The Langley is the sister hotel to The Wellesley Knightsbridge, a Luxury Collection Hotel, London which overlooks Hyde Park.
Located in the Langley Park estate, the hotel is an exquisite 41-room boutique hotel and 25,000 square-foot spa set within 500 acres of idyllic Buckinghamshire countryside. The hotel is comprised of two buildings, a historic mansion that was once the former estate of the Duke of Marlborough and a Grade II-listed 18th century building that was formerly used as a stables and brew house. In partnership with the award-winning interior design company Dennis Irvine Studio, who also created the design concept for The Wellesley and the two Wellesley yachts, the buildings have been undergoing an extensive multi-million-pound renovation over the last four years.
Before entering the hotel, guests will take in impeccably landscaped gardens and a beautiful, imposing Lebanon Cedar Tree which is centuries old, both of which are listed by English Heritage. The Grade II-listed gardens were re-designed in the 18th century by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the renowned landscape architect responsible for changing the face of Britain’s gardens forever.
The ornate entrance transports visitors back in time as many of the building’s original features have been re-established, and in keeping with its heritage, imposing doorways and Baroque fireplaces are found throughout the property. The hotel’s interior design carefully balances the history of the building with contemporary luxury while creating a number of distinct and bespoke design features. Guestrooms and suites feature elegant roll-top baths in the centre of the bedrooms with expansive windows framing views of greenery and the open lake.
Opposite the entrance of the main hotel, guests will find The Brewhouse – a Grade ll-listed out-building that will house a number of characterful bedrooms where the former owners concocted their own local brew using old-fashioned methods.
Hotel developer, Khalid Affara, said, “The restoration of The Langley has been an incredible process involving large teams of experts painstakingly regenerating this magnificent historic building to its former glory. The whole estate is steeped in such rich history and heritage we are excited to soon launch a product that successfully celebrates The Langley’s past whilst offering contemporary luxury and design alongside outstanding dining. The sheer size and specification of The Langley Spa help to make the estate an outstanding destination.”
Upon opening, The Langley will be the fourth Luxury Collection property in England, joining its sister hotel The Wellesley Knightsbridge, The Park Tower Knightsbridge and The Westbury in London.

Creating furniture with the right colour palette is extremely important if you are aiming to astonish with your project.
Natural tendencies are foreseen, earthy shades, sandy hues. Specifically keep an eye on smokey grey, tending to go a bit in the direction of blue hues like navy blue. In general, the key colours are based on neutral tones, many of them having a beautiful ambivalence – especially in the case of colours like khaki olive or the blue navy.
To inspire you, Covet House has selected a series of pieces that will make you surrender to the new Winter colours…
Piccadilly Mirror – Boca do Lobo: Piccadilly Mirror is a result of new concepts that featured impossible constructions, explorations of the infinity, architecture and tessellations. With a convex mirror, its frame is made in highly handcrafted poplar. The mirror is a perfect reflection of the masters at work here at Boca do Lobo Design Studio. This piece is perfect for exteriors, with neutral tones.
Miles Floor Lamp – Delightfull: “For me, music and life are all about style” said Miles Davis. Miles standing lamp brings back the atmosphere of sophistication inspired by the 1950s. With a complexity not visible at first sight, like the eye catcher gold plated frame, black marble base and the gold pendant switch, it casts a smooth light that will surely make you feel in a “Kind of Blue” mood.
Journey Armchair – Brabbu: Journey armchair is the way to live calm and introspective moments. Made in synthetic leather, it’s texture takes you to a place where time does not go by and good moments are carved into eternity. Journey is a strong yet peaceful piece ideal for a modern decor.
Ambar Rug – The Rug Society: Although neutral tones are the focus of next winter it’s possible to highlight tones, earthy sienna, browns that have grey tones and to top everything we have olive green, pale pink, aquamarine and mustard yellow. Having this in mind, Rug’s Society presents its Ambar Rug. With a bold graphic design and a creation without limits; a 100% handmade product that transforms the comfort and beauty of your project.
Mimi Bar Chair – Koket: Navy blue is probably the most peculiar colour to look forward to this winter. Because of that, Koket brings this wonderful bar chair. Mimi is the sophisticated and flirty girl-next-door of barstools. This simple but sweet cozy design hugs your body in cozy upholstery fabric. Its attractive body with modern curves is accented by long metal legs.
Guggenheim Chandelier – Luxxu: The Guggenheim Museum is considered to be the “temple of the spirit”. Furthermore, it is the most important structure of its time. As a result of the leading-edge architecture, the Guggenheim chandelier was designed. Another piece in black, classic and chic, it will definitely satisfy your desire for refinement and fit perfect in your winter décor.
Agata Lotus Panel – Maison Valentina: This art panel inspired by the Agatha’s mineral stone has a gathering of layers resembling the shape of the Lotus Flower, a plant that has a symbolism of purity, rebirth and divinity in the Buddhism and Hinduism religions. This art panel is based on the use of acrylic colours assortment and resin materials which blended with digital art and handmade techniques allows the creation of distinctive elements and repeated patterns. The art panels can be customised through graphic and handmade artistic touches and created in different sizes to create unique ambiences. A jewel for the most royal bathrooms.
Kelly Bar Chair – Essential Home: Continuing in the neutral tones, Essential Home presents a mid-century bar chair. Remember Casablanca barstools? Now bring it to the present time, add a modern touch and an explosion of colour. The whole shape and golden base of Kelly Chair can make you feel that you just walked into a 1950 luxurious bar. The shape of the back support is made to endure and be comfortable, that could be translated into hours spent at the bar, enjoying a cocktail or two.
Feel comfortable and warm this winter, with these eccentric pieces that Covet House has selected and celebrates the design in the best way possible.
The City of London Corporation has recently granted planning permission to Eric Parry Architects to build a 10-storey, 191-room hotel on Holborn Viaduct at the current site of Morley House.
The planning application was approved at the Corporation’s Planning and Transportation Committee and is the second hotel approved in the City this year. There are now 35 hotels in the City of London, with a further 14 hotels under construction and three permitted sites yet to begin construction.
Hotel stock in the City has risen in recent years from 3,780 bedrooms to more than 5,000 bedrooms between 2011/12 and 2016/17. By 2023/24 the City is projected to have 7,800 hotel rooms.
These plans also include the bottom two floors of neighbouring City Temple to be leased by Morley House owners for flexible office use, adding to the offer of the hotel and securing the long term future of City Temple – an international church located in Holborn since 1974.
City Temple accommodates church halls, residential accommodation and meeting rooms used by organisations such as Sainsbury’s, the NHS and City Law School.
Chris Hayward, Chairman of the Planning & Transportation Committee at the City of London Corporation, said: “The City of London is a changing business environment and we are committed to supporting the growth of financial and professional services. With an additional 1.25 million square metres of office space under construction, we have the potential to accommodate a further 75,000 workers. But we also need to make sure that there is sufficient accommodation across the City on offer.
“We have also recently approved student accommodation in the City helping London to remain competitive with education providers globally. City Temple is currently falling into disrepair. This development demonstrates the benefits of mixed use developments and how the City is uniquely able to combine culture and heritage with the modern needs of our visitors and workers.”

Hilton Boston/Woburn has completed a comprehensive $16 million (£12 million) renovation spearheaded by a joint venture between The Davis Companies and The Rubicon Companies.
Today’s opening of Matadora, the hotel’s highly-anticipated Spanish tapas restaurant, marks the culmination of the property”s top-to-bottom renovation, which drew inspiration from the area”s historic shoe and leather-making industries. The new hotel has been timelessly tailored for the modern traveler while articulating Woburn’s legacy of craftsmanship throughout the transformed lobby, guest rooms, event and meeting spaces.
The $16 million renovation revitalized the Woburn hotel’s lobby, guest rooms, event and meeting spaces, which pay homage to the town’s legacy of craftmanship that dates back to the 17th Century. Cobblers and cordwainers dominated the city”s industry through the mid-1800s when manufacturing shifted to leathermaking by 1865.
In 1885, Woburn became New England’s leading leather producer and its talented tanners are credited with innovations still used today. In fact, it was Woburn’s Henry Thayer who developed chrome tanning in 1901, a process that makes leather water-resistant, more durable, softer and suppler than traditional vegetable tanning.
Guests enter the Hilton Boston/Woburn through the vibrant lobby, which welcomes visitors with a dramatic lighting installation, reclaimed woods, layered area rugs, retail-inspired check-in desks displaying vintage artifacts and accent walls inspired by a Brannock shoe measuring device. The lobby flows into a six-story open atrium and past the Rivet Room, a new social space where guests can relax in oversized leather armchairs, play billiards or enjoy cocktails while overlooking the refurbished indoor swimming pool.

The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts has announced the reopening of The Athenee Hotel in Bangkok following an extensive renovation and transformation into a Luxury Collection hotel.
The Athenee Hotel will offer global explorers a gateway to the inspiring history and culture of Bangkok through the lens of The Luxury Collection, a glittering ensemble of world-renowned hotels and resorts delivering unique, authentic experiences.
Formerly known as Plaza Athenee Bangkok, the newly restored Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok, stands on the grounds of the Kandhavas Palace, former royal residence of Princess Valaya Alongkorn. A homage to its regal lineage, the hotel’s opulent re-design is a modern take on traditional Thai design elements with a distinctly European flair. With the opening of Athenee Hotel, The Luxury Collection continues its commitment to celebrating the heritage of the world”s most iconic hotels through meticulous restoration projects that pay tribute to local indigenous charms and treasures.
Overseen by interior design firms Vekhin Interior and Bangkok Dec-Con PLC, The Luxury Collection’s multi-million dollar renovation of The Athenee Hotel will bring to life Bangkok”s roots in an authentic and indigenous way. The redesign incorporates many aspects of the Thai colonial style of the princess” lifetime, from the influence of Thai royal ceremonies in the Royal Club guestrooms and Athenee suites to the carefully selected color palettes and artwork for the interiors.
In addition to the refurbishment of common spaces and all 374 luxurious guest rooms, The Athenee Hotel’s transformation includes a newly redesigned city-lagoon styled swimming pool area. Skillfully merging the outdoor pool area with an indoor function space inspired by the timeless style of Kandhavas Palace, the designers have created a distinctly Thai venue for leisure and relaxation. Guests will also have several food and beverage options to enjoy, from the popular Smooth Curry restaurant to The Glaz bar, whose timeless neo-colonial décor celebrates the hotel’s location on the site of a former royal palace.
Bulgari Hotels & Resorts will open its Dubai Resort on Thursday 7th December 2017; an urban oasis on Jumeirah Bay.
This newest addition to the Bulgari Hotels & Resorts collection is the fifth in the group, following on from the most recently launched Bulgari Hotel Beijing, which opened in September 2017. It joins a growing portfolio of properties around the world, which began with the inaugural Bulgari Hotel Milan in 2004, Bulgari Resort Bali in 2006 and Bulgari Hotel London in 2012, and will be followed by Shanghai in early 2018, and then Moscow in 2020.
As with all Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, the hotel was designed by renowned Italian architectural firm Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel. Both the interiors and exteriors have been created with the same detail and precision of a Bulgari jewel: pairing rare, raw materials according to colour, texture and feel, and sculpting them into objects of enduring beauty. Styled with European inspired boulevards, illuminated gardens and pools, it blends Mediterranean landscaping with the natural surroundings of the shores of the Arabian Gulf.
Embracing a maritime theme, customising the resort to echo its unique island home, luscious Italian marble has been used along with coral inspired exteriors to truly epitomise the ocean surroundings. Meanwhile, in the spirit of integral designs dating back to the 1930s, the architects hand-selected or custom-designed every element for consistency, comfort and purity, allowing the hotel’s design to maintain an uncompromisingly Italian style, while simultaneously incorporating the uniqueness of its destination, exuding timeless glamour. Each piece, from the marble bathtubs to the sculpted door handles, hail from the finest quality materials and is incorporated in a unified, seamless fashion.
The resort includes 101 hotel rooms and suites and 20 hotel villas, all exquisitely furnished with the highest quality Italian luxury furniture brands such as Maxalto, Flos, Fexform and others, in an expression of the quality of ‘Made in Italy’. All rooms and suites have expansive views over the breathtaking Dubai skyline or the Arabian Gulf, with large balconies to truly soak up the magnificent scenery.

The managing director of the UK’s newest hotel group has outlined plans to press ahead with further expansion to follow its impressive market entry in Scotland.
Daniel Roger, MD at Leonardo Hotels Europe, says the company has not been deterred by the Brexit and is fully focused on its growth strategy to create a strong portfolio across Europe.
The hotel group – which opened Leonardo Royal Hotel Edinburgh as its flagship Scottish unit after a £6.1 million refurbishment to the former Premier Inn earlier this year – has now taken over Portland Hotels, adding five more locations across Scotland to its portfolio.
The new Leonardo Hotels in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Perth take its number of properties to more than 85 in 40+ locations, with Scotland representing a prime focus destination for further growth by the group.
But Daniel has stressed that plans for progression do not stop there. He said: “With the market launch in the UK two years ago (the opening of the Leonardo Hotel London Heathrow Airport), our main targets were to increase our portfolio and strengthen the recognition of Leonardo Hotels brand in Scotland.
“This plan underlines our latest coup, which is the takeover of the Portland Hotels with five properties in Scotland; expanding our portfolio to include two hotels in Edinburgh as well others in Glasgow, Perth and Aberdeen.
“Leonardo’s portfolio will grow to seven hotels with 1,048 bedrooms, which represents a significant strengthening of our presence in the UK, and Scotland in particular. And we still have a lot to offer.”
When asked about the impact of Brexit, Daniel was unequivocal in his response, saying: “We have just taken over five hotels in the UK. This is a clear statement.
“The ultimate target of the company is to promote and strengthen the brand Leonardo Hotels Europe-wide. Our future strategy is to continue our investment in growth and to have 100 hotels across Europe by 2020.”
The design of the new Leonardo Royal Hotel Edinburgh was the work of respected designer Andreas Neudahm and ties in with the group’s philosophy of creating sites which reflect their location. The Haymarket location aims to appeal to both leisure and business guests with excellent tram and rail links nearby and a generously sized car park.
Plans are also advancing for the five Portland Hotels to be rebranded as Leonardo Hotels, including proposals for some to undergo a refurbishment programme.

Following its debut at Grand Designs Live in Birmingham, GROHE’s UK Marketing Director Raj Mistry, has labelled the event a ‘tremendous success’ as it drew big crowds to its stand to learn more about its innovative water products.
This year, the popular consumer home and renovation show welcomed thousands of visitors, many of whom were drawn to GROHE’s stand. One of the big attractions to the GROHE stand was its activity with celebrity TV chef Ed Baines, who has partnered with GROHE to support its Blue Home kitchen tap which dispenses filtered still, medium or sparkling water on demand.
This is the third in a series of partnered events with Ed Baines, who has been highlighting the many benefits of having access to pure, filtered water. On this occasion, he entertained the crowds with a series of live cooking demonstrations using water from both the Blue Home and the Red, GROHE‘s kettle hot water tap, as an integral part of his recipes. Mixologists, Eventology, were also on hand to serve up delicious mocktails using water from the GROHE Blue Home on the first day of the show to mark its opening.
GROHE’s UK Marketing Director, Raj Mistry, said: “We are delighted with the success of our first exhibition at Grand Designs Live, providing an important platform in the home development and building sector to showcase our kitchen offerings and encourage our guests to consider the benefits of unbottled and instantly available filtered water. Using filtered water from our Blue and Red not only has environmental benefits, but delivers an improved taste experience both in terms of delicious still and sparkling chilled water, as well as kettle hot water for drinks or to enhance flavours when cooking. Offering our guests the chance to taste the difference for themselves through mocktails and samples cooked by Ed Baines really brought the stand to life.”
The Trafalgar St. James hotel launched with a star-studded event at the stunning new Rooftop restaurant in London this month. Working with hospitality giant Hilton on its first Curio Collection property in the UK, SHH Architecture and Interior Design led the multi-million pound renovation, turning the only hotel in London’s Trafalgar Square into a ‘sanctuary of style’ in the heart of the city.
London based SHH, one of Britain’s most prestigious architecture and interior design practices, boasting clients including Ascot, Wimbledon and Faberge, were entrusted with the project as lead architects. ‘We didn’t want it to feel like a mainstream chain hotel, because it’s not, so staying true to the independent ethos, as well as creating a distinctly London aesthetic, was key,’ says SHH Creative Director and Founder Neil Hogan on the concept behind the transformation.
The Trafalgar St. James has 131 bedrooms including 15 suites. Each has been designed with Art Deco flourishes and references to the history of the building, which once housed the offices of the Cunard Steamship Company with news of the ill-fated Titanic breaking there. Tactile furnishings and bold colour choices have been used to create a sense of comfort, while art walls in the bedrooms pay tribute to London’s Trafalgar Square.
Design Detail – Carpet The bespoke carpets are by Hotel Designs clients Brintons, a British carpet brand founded in 1783. The blue and white Axminster carpet design used in the bedrooms ties in with other items in the room, such as the red headboard, subtly representing the union jack. The corridor continued the deep blue palette and drew design inspiration for the star pattern from one of Lord Nelson medals: Trafalgar Square of course commemorating Nelson’s victory in the Battle of Trafalgar in the Napoleonic Wars.
Design Detail – Chandelier A bespoke chandelier was created for the project working with British luxury lighting designers, CTO Lighting. Taking inspiration from the Array Opal range, the bespoke piece measures over 2.5 meters in length, and is the first thing that can be seen when entering the roof top bar from the lift.
Design Detail – Soft Furnishings The ‘Napoleon’ feature scatter cushions in the guest rooms are from the Glasgow based textile designer Timorous Beasties. The luxurious crimson velvet and fun gold and black bee prints are representative of the hotel itself and match the British red and blue colour palette.
Working with the existing building was a challenge as all the rooms had a different footprint or window type so there was a lot or coordination and joinery tweaks to undertake.
The brief for the ‘The Rooftop’ was to create a destination bar and dining space that worked all year round, therefore a retractable canopy, and heated space, was the solution to ensure Britain’s changeable weather didn’t interfere. “We created distinct indoor and outdoor zones to provide multiple uses including a private glasshouse for intimate events. The Rooftop is all about the stunning, uninterrupted views across Trafalgar Square and London skyline beyond so we worked to maximise these wherever you were on the Rooftop.”
Working with a variety of international and homegrown design talent and manufacturers, Hogan and his team selected furnishings for The Trafalgar St. James that reflect its unique London heritage. An artfully curated blend of furniture, finishes, and light fixtures set the scene of The Trafalgar St. James giving the space an identity fit for its iconic location. “We wanted the space to be engaging and comfortable. The scheme is bold and inviting and the colours chosen are uniquely British. As a guest you’ll see a lot of deep blues with highlights of red and burgundy. The unique artwork was designed for the hotel to subtly remind guests of their iconic location.”
British craftsmanship in particular makes sense for such a quintessentially British hotel: Leading British and design manufacturers were specified by SHH including Brintons who delivered the bespoke carpets throughout the scheme; Peter Millard & Partners, tasked with creating the bespoke art work in the rooms; CTO Lighting who created a show-stopping bespoke drop chandelier upon entry to the Rooftop; textile designers Timorous Beasties’ crimson velvet cushions make statement accents in the bedrooms and Tom Dixon’s ‘London’ scented diffusers are used throughout the bedrooms.
Commenting on the re-launch design, Joanne Taylor-Stagg, General Manager of The Trafalgar St. James said: “It was paramount to us that the new look reflected the overall ethos of the hotel – we want guests to feel that every stay with us is a unique London experience. Working in close collaboration with the owners and SHH, we’re so happy with the results and the reaction from our first guests has been incredibly positive.”
The Trafalgar St. James is tucked away on the south-west side of the world-famous Trafalgar Square, in the heart of the West End and amidst the hustle of bustle of St. James. This part of London has long been seen as more of a tourist destination but the hotel wants to put it back into the hearts of Londoners and bring a whole new level of excitement to the area.

Hotel Saranac will reopen in late 2017 after a multi-million dollar restoration that infuses modern indulgences with untamed North Country spirit.
With its glorious ballroom, gorgeous public spaces, and landmark exterior burnished to a new glow, the Hotel Saranac will also boast amenities fresh as the Upstate air. Indigenous ingredients like pine, birch, and maple will infuse treatments at Ampersand Salon and Spa, a state-of-the-art sanctuary named for the majestic mountain nearby. The Hotel Saranac’s rustic-chic restaurant, is the Campfire Adirondack Grill + Bar.
Originally designed by Adirondacks architects Scopes and Feustmann, Hotel Saranac opened in 1927 as a beacon of elegance in serene Saranac Lake. Visitors from up and down the East Coast flocked to the hotel, drawn by its grand design, breathtaking scenery, and historic surroundings on downtown’s Main Street. A painstaking, thoughtful restoration has brought a modern spin to everything that made the Hotel Saranac a 20th-century icon.
Now part of the select Curio Collection by Hilton, a collection of unique hotels appealing to travelers seeking local discovery, the Hotel Saranac was bought in 2013 by New Hampshire-based Roedel Companies, a standard-setting owner-operator with deep family ties to Saranac Lake. Offering a comprehensive suite of hospitality services, Roedel Companies has taken a fully integrated approach with the restoration, including managing its development, construction, interior design and operations.
Roedel engaged Boston-based Korn Design to guide the overall vision and create a brand strategy for the re-launch of the iconic hotel. Governor of New York State Andrew Cuomo also played an instrumental role in bringing the hotel to life, awarding a $5 million (£3.8 million) redevelopment grant to Hotel Saranac.
The hotel – the sole survivor of 13 luxurious properties that dotted Saranac Lake in the 1920s – includes 82 reimagined guest rooms in its main building, and 20 more suites in Compass Point, an adjacent complex that will open in early 2018. Each Compass Point suite has been uniquely designed to match the architectural detailing of the building. These larger, more private sanctuaries are perfect for families, social groups and events.
Hotel Saranac’s legacy echoes throughout guestrooms, all reimagined with regional heritage in mind. RSJ Associates of Wilton, New Hampshire. spearheaded the interior design with the goal of giving the guestrooms a modern touch while still maintaining the feel of the ‘Great Gastby’ era of sophistication and elegance. Dark-wood architectural furniture, deep blue rugs, crisp white linens, and rich textures, in color palettes of deep reds and rich oranges, marry cherished history and polished modernity. Each guestroom features original, retro-inspired travel posters specially commissioned for the hotel, incorporating native symbols from the region.

TOPHOTELPROJECTS talks about hotel sustainability and how it’s shaping the design and construction of hotels around the world…
Sustainability has long been a buzzword within the design community, and hoteliers in particular have been latching onto the idea of the past number of years.
Not only is it a response to an increased awareness of climate change and the impact we as humans, especially those working in one aspect of the construction industry, have on the planet, but it is also a response to client demand, with more and more guests desiring sustainable tourism as a requirement in their holidays. An annual competition run by hotel consultancy firm the John Hardy Group called Radical Innovation Award takes submissions for innovative hotel designs that reimagine the hospitality experience, and this year’s entries and winners point to a significant upswing in sustainable hospitality that could well be the future of the industry.
The award has singled out a number of visionary projects as finalists, but many of the entries proposed radical ideas that threw out the rulebook of hospitality design. A common theme was that of sustainability, both in an environmentally friendly sense, but also in a cultural sense, where local culture and art is celebrated and promoted. This also points to recent trends in hospitality where local experiences are being sought by guests wishing to engage more with the place and people they are visiting.
Green or garden hotels were a big feature of a number of entries. Canadian firm Arno Matis Architecture proposed a project entitled the ‘Vertical Micro-Climate Hotel’, whose concept is to make the outdoor areas of hotels located in the harsh climates of North America habitable all year round.
One of the features of this hotel was the use of heliostat technology, a mirroring system which reflects sun back into certain parts of the building as required so as to make them habitable even in colder weather conditions.
EoA’s submission involved suspending hotel facilities from a treetop by using a system of cables to hold rooms in tent-form above a trampoline-like platform, giving the hotel a very small footprint above the forest floor and re-orientating the guest’s field of vision to that from the tree canopy. A Dutch architecture student submitted a project that he had built in his mother’s back garden which connects guests to nature while allowing them to sleep in a sustainably built and naturally ventilated structure.
The culturally sustainable aspect came in the form of the currently-operational Play Design Hotel in Taiwan, which champions local artists and designers by installing their creations into hotel rooms and encouraging guest to interact with them.
The idea came about after the developer noticed a lot of his artist friends were having to go abroad to showcase their designs, and he thought that it would be better to not only exhibit the work locally in hotels so that international guests could see them, but also to cultivate an environment of design engagement within the hotels themselves.
“I want people to experience the culture of this country. played a lot with the idea of using the hotel as a portal for people who want to learn about Taiwanese design, a space that is furnished with all of these local designers’ work. So, their work is not only shown but so it’s experienced. Design isn’t something you only put in a museum or gallery. It should be used. It’s for your everyday use,” says hotelier Ting-Han Chen.
More information on hotel sustainability can be found on TOPHOTELPROJECTS, the specialised service provider in the exchange of cutting-edge information of hotel construction in the international hospitality industry.
Artfully combining sophisticated minimalism with the industrial aesthetic of an early 20th-century warehouse, The Robey Hall puts guests at the heart of the action in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighbourhood.
The hip younger sister property of The Robey offers up Modern American cuisine at the neighboring Café Robey, as well as rooftop cocktails with cityscape views at Up & Up and Cabana Club. High ceilings, exposed brickwork, and polished concrete floors in the 20 loft-style guestrooms are home to box-style beds in birch plywood and steel, while the open-plan lobby acts as a neighborhood hub with an ‘everybody welcome’ attitude.
Originally opened as The Hollander, the property has undergone renovations to create a fluid extension of The Robey hotel, which is located in the adjoining Northwest tower. Housed in the former Hollander Fireproof Warehouse, which stands as a monument to Chicago’s industrial epoch, the structure’s industrial intentions provided French design studios Ciguë and Delordinaire with the inspiration for the hotel’s design concept.
The Robey Hall’s 20 private rooms and suites all boast soaring 11-foot-high ceilings, as well as rough-textured brick walls. Beds rendered in crisp, blond-hued birch plywood and black steel are illuminated by Schoolhouse Electric bedside lamps and framed by custom-made folded steel shelving. Spanning between 260 and 390 square feet, each guestroom offers a sitting area, a workspace, and polished concrete floors.
However, it is the communal spaces—complete with cement panel cladding, oak tables and touches of leather—that are the beating heart of the hotel. The hotel’s open-plan lobby lounge and bar H!Bar is dominated by a 27-foot-long wooden workbench by Delordinaire, and is also home to a Metric Coffee Co. espresso bar and bicycle hire shop in partnership with Tokyobike. A tucked-away neighborhood spot for Chicago natives and guest alike, the space is defined by design, curated house sounds, and vinyl. H!Bar and the Robey Lounge feature a progressive program of events and live music.
From the ground up, the sixth-floor rooftop of The Robey Hall plays host to Cabana Club, a stylish poolside cocktail bar and sun deck with 180-degree views of the city’s skyline. The cocktail list of classic warmer-climes concoctions including palomas, caiprinhas, and micheladas to extend the summer vibes all year long, and is complemented by a selection of tostadas and skewers. Outside, a wood-burning fireplace and chilled-out soundtrack courtesy of regular DJ sets ensure that, at The Robey Hall at least, the Windy City has just become decidedly hotter.

The New Esplanade Hotel, the successor to the storied old Esplanade hotel that fell to the wrecking ball in the early 1970s, is embarking on a renovation and re-positioning that will reestablish its position as a vibrant link on Perth’s Elizabeth Quay.
The hotel’s new management company, Louis T Collection, and owners H&M Capital Pty Ltd, have commissioned a diverse team of architects and designers to carry out a revitalisation of the property that will breathe new life into its interiors, enabling it to reclaim its position among Perth’s best hotels.
The current 67-room property was built adjacent to the site of the original Esplanade Hotel, which opened in 1898 and was demolished in 1972. A popular and architecturally significant landmark in its time, the Esplanade was an important social gathering spot, featuring a formal dining room and bustling saloon style bar. Although the New Esplanade Hotel, constructed after the original property’s demolition, was designed and built with guest rooms and one small restaurant, its reopening in Summer 2018 will unveil a new 80-room property in addition to new public areas including a lobby café, rooftop bar and restaurant, and one of the city’s most flexible co-working spaces.
Although design plans are still in early stages, the project team will stay true to the laid-back vibe of Western Australia, incorporating local style and craftsmanship into both the interior and exterior of the property. As a result of the extensive remodeling, the team plans to elevate the hotel to provide a more boutique luxurious feel which provides a taste of real Australian hospitality.
“The new look will create a space that is both modern and stylish and imparts a sense of Western Australia,“ said Interior Stylist Malvina Stone, who will be working on the redesign with Nicola Gibson, collaborative architect and the Perth based architectural firm Alda Consultants, led by Andrew Lian. “My experience in creating spaces that are truly livable will enable us to deliver a hotel that encompasses a balance between work and play and is as inviting as a home.”.
For Stone, whose interior design firm specialises in multi-million dollar homes throughout Australia, the New Esplanade Hotel will be her first endeavor in the hospitality arena.
The interiors will be completely re-imagined. A new 24-hour lobby will connect to the outdoors through lofty French doors opening onto the Elizabeth Quay promenade. Comfy communal spaces will be added throughout including a cafe brewing up locally roasted coffee and bakery items that will be the cornerstone of the space, and open to guests and local passersby. The hotel will be driven by a sense of nature and community with classic overtures.
Design elements include Australian timbers, wool and linens. The feel will be comforting rather than ‘showy’, with a nod to local contemporary artists and palette. Occupying the entire ninth floor will be Perth’s first dedicated 24/7 collective work space where guests and locals can convene to work, meet, find inspiration and socialize.
According to Lian of Alda Consultants, the exterior design will embrace a ‘new meets old’ philosophy to maintain the character of the property, while updating the existing bay windows and extending the facade of the roof top to highlight its location in the Perth skyline. Lighting will play a critical role in the exterior aesthetic, complementing the property’s ‘front and center’ position in the new Elizabeth Quay waterfront development.
Louis T Collection will oversee the renovation with Robert Batrick, Louis T’s director of project services, as the lead. Batrick brings over 15 years of experience in the construction industry to the project, recently overseeing the 2016/2017 renovation and re-opening of Louis T Collection’s Mantra Samui Resort, an idyllic coastal retreat on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand.
Disney will begin construction next summer on a new 700-room hotel at the Anaheim Disneyland Resort, Disney Parks Blog reports.
The new hotel will mark the first luxurious four-diamond hotel to open in Disney’s Anaheim resort in almost 20 years. The property is planned as an entry for ‘a new gateway’ to the resort. It”ll be located on the west end of the park”s Downtown Disney district.
In front of the hotel, an ‘expansive landscaped plaza complete with playful water features’ is planned. Further landscaping and walkways will link the new hotel with the resort”s four existing hotels, creating a new entrance to the park from the west.
The huge new hotel will take up 17 acres, and it will rise where the AMC theater, an Earl of Sandwich shop, the ESPN Zone, and Rainforest Cafe now stand, reports the Orange County Register. Disneyland officials told the Register that they”ve started to share their plans with tenants who would be displaced and say it”s possible some many find space to operate in the future hotel, which is expected to open in 2021.

A stunning carpet full of classic design cues and woven by Wilton Carpets now graces areas of Hardwick Hall, a four-star luxury country hotel considered one of the North East’s most charming places to stay.
When looking for new carpet to adorn its Colman Suite, Crush Bar, corridors and lounge areas; the hotel turned to Wilton Carpets’ bespoke service to create a design perfectly in keeping with its unique style. An oversize repeating scroll is layered beneath a pin-line interlocking hexagon and surrounded by a decorative border, tones of taupe and grey giving a sophisticated tonal look.
The bordered design serves to frame the three areas of the Colman Suite, which can be separated to accommodate different functions and covers and to provide definition to the adjacent Crush Bar. The design also works well to define the lounge area of the hotel and to provide a striking carpet in corridors.
Sam Dean, senior designer, Wilton Carpets, commented: “We worked with Space I.D to develop a carpet design that referenced the classical elegance of Hardwick Hall’s 18th century architecture, while marking its status as one of the North East’s most luxurious destinations. Through blending sophisticated contemporary geometrics with elegant florals and classic fret borders, we’ve managed to achieve the difficult balance between historic reference and modern intention. A bordered design such as this is also a great way to define individual areas, at the same time giving a unified look.”
Installed by Pocklington Carpets, the 850 square metres of bespoke carpet were manufactured in Wilton’s Wiltshire factory, axminster woven in an 80% British wool and 20% nylon blend for wear and appearance retention. In a seven-row quality, the carpet can withstand high footfall levels, while it’s wool and nylon mix remains easy to clean, keeping the suite, bar, lounge and corridors looking their best throughout constant use.

After the successful launch of HygieneGlaze in 2015, the innovative ceramic glaze has been further developed by Duravit’s research and development team, and now has a new formula: HygieneGlaze 2.0.
The new HygieneGlaze 2.0, which is baked into the ceramic during firing, is not only extremely effective, but also acts very quickly. After just six hours, 90% of bacteria are killed. After twelve hours, a 99.9% reduction is achieved – the same effect as its predecessor, but in half the time. After 24 hours, this percentage rises to 99.999% – an unprecedented level.
Additional activation mechanisms and components have been deployed in this new, patented process. The optimized formula of HygieneGlaze 2.0 contains a new combination of metal ions and other active substances, which is particularly effective in eradicating bacteria like E. coli, for example. The effectiveness is based on an oligodynamic reaction, which illustrates the detrimental effect of positively charged metal ions on bacteria.
HygieneGlaze 2.0 is integrated into the glaze during firing. This manufacturing process ensures an extremely effective reduction in pathogens such as escherichia coli. Baked into the ceramic and extending from the interior to the rim of the toilet or urinal, HygieneGlaze 2.0 is effective in the areas particularly susceptible to the accumulation of bacteria.
The effect of the innovative glaze on bacteria was so powerful during the hygienic microbiological tests that the measuring procedure results far exceeded the current limit. For this reason, subsequent investigations considered kinetics for the first time. Beforehand, only the starting and finishing concentrations after 24 hours were measured. Now, researchers can measure effectiveness over time and thereby show how many bacteria have been wiped out after 6, 12 and 24 hours.
HygieneGlaze 2.0 is available for all toilets and urinals in the Architec, Darling New, D-Code, DuraStyle, Happy D.2, ME by Starck, P3 Comforts, Starck 3 and Vero Air ranges.

The refurbishment of its Deluxe and Premier guestrooms completes a THB 470 million project that also saw the upgrade of Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel’s suites and public spaces.
Work has begun on a £50 million project to create a luxury hotel and apartments in Plymouth, which will take three years.
In December 2016, Henley Real Estate won the right to deliver 1620, a £50m hotel and residential development on Plymouth Hoe on the site of the former Quality Hotel.
Planning permission for the 60-bedroom boutique, spa and ‘panoramic penthouse’ was granted in July 2017 and now builders have started on the transformation that will be completed in 2020 in time for the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower.
The architects for the project are Ellis Williams Architects and now a new milestone for the property has been reached, as officials give the hotel the green light to serve alcohol to guests and locals 24 hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week.
Bosses told the panel that their business model is ‘to provide local residents with a high-quality dining experience’.

Hallmark Hotel Birmingham Strathallan, part of leading UK independent hotel chain Hallmark Hotels, has invested over £1.5 million into refreshing the design of its bedrooms, suites and conference rooms.
Situated in leafy Edgbaston, just five minutes from Birmingham New Street and a stone’s-throw from the city’s renowned Arena, the hotel is popular among business travellers and as a venue for events.
The refurbishment project, which began in 2016, has seen a £700k investment into modernising the lift structures within the hotel and a further £450k spent on turning 53 of its 135 bedrooms into City Doubles. Continuing into 2017, the hotel has most recently seen £200k spent on converting 18 of its bedrooms into Classic twin bedrooms. The work will continue throughout the year, and will incorporate the refurbishment of its Wallace Suite, and six other meeting rooms which together hold up to 170 delegates.
Amy Windsor, General Manager at Hallmark Hotel Birmingham Strathallan said: “The widespread refurbishments have given, what was already a popular hotel, a more modern and streamlined feel. Hallmark Hotel Birmingham Strathallan has a natural focus towards corporate and business guests and the increased space and investment will help us extend our offering to new and returning visitors. Alongside our new menu, also designed to meet the needs to the business traveller, we’re delighted with the feedback we are getting from regular business guests.
“With Birmingham’s position as a UK hub for the meetings and events market, we are especially keen to see the completion of our Wallace Suite – our largest conference suite – which we’re looking forward to unveiling later this autumn.”
The investment into Hallmark Hotel Birmingham Strathallan is part of the group’s wider refurbishment initiative to modernise several of its portfolio of 28 hotels across the country.
When London-based B3 Designers was appointed to transform Hotel de la Paix Geneva’s new Fiskebar restaurants and bar, contemporary Nordic minimalism was the starting point for the design’s inspiration.
This theme reflects the restaurants’ cuisine concept – the first of its kind in the Swiss capital’s prestigious neighbourhood. The harmonious connection with nature, the neutral deeper and darker tones and detailing, abundance of raw materials and weathered textures against minimalistic furniture, whilst retaining elements of timeless rich luxury, has embodied the design ethos of this 220m² space.
There are four distinct yet interconnecting areas at play – the chic and intimate fine-dining restaurant, the more casual raw kitchen counter with its high-table communal seating, the luxurious bar and its cosy opulent lounge. The Nordic theme throughout these spaces evolves from sophisticated modern elegance, to playfully fashion-forward.
RESTAURANT SPACES A refined atmosphere is created in Fiskebar’s fine-dining restaurant, featuring a spacious and comfortable layout of smooth oak and dark, raw tones. Guests are invited to relax into plush banquettes and cosy armchairs in neutral and warm leather, and dine on slate-topped tables with brass detail. The walls are lined with raw yet smooth, grey-toned timber panelling – a remarkable back-drop for British artist Adam Ross’ grand installation of hand-made abstract ceramic oyster forms of varying shapes and sizes, which was specially commissioned for this project.
The exquisitely understated Dinesen oak flooring seamlessly connects this room to the raw kitchen counter and bar, along with the large distressed beams installed overhead. This casual minimalistic yet elegant dining area, with its open kitchen and raw food counter display, features two long communal tables with stick-back style high chairs, as well as smaller tables for couples. Futuristic long tubular pendant lights hover above the communal tables creating a more casual fish market style atmosphere. The green glazed brick wall tiles in the exposed kitchen contrasts against the dominating dark finishes of the rest of the space. The timber wall panelling is carried through to this space, but with the addition of antique seeded mirrors. Handblown glass pendant lighting is hung in clusters by the windows with views to the terrace.
COCKTAIL BAR AND LOUNGE B3 Designers were fortunate to have some pre-existing heritage-listed features to work with in the cocktail bar and lounge, which include antique wall panelling as well as classic French mouldings and 150-year old parquet and walnut floor. This room was rumoured to have once been used for the drafting of the Geneva Convention, and the antique gilded dove-shaped door handles make a poignant reference to Switzerland’s legacy of peace. The cocktail bar and lounge has a rich palette of textures, colours and timelessly classic vintage furniture. The curved bar, supported by a mixologist’s dream liquor display, sits in one corner of the room, framed by high bar stools.
Low-level tables and plush seating are scattered throughout the rest of the space. The heritage features are complemented with an opulent Venetian-style distressed fresco and plaster effect on the walls, which are also adorned with an eclectic cluster of curated and bespoke Geneva-themed artwork, posters and photographs with historical significance. The bijou lounge is an intimately private and exclusive space with a rich velvet banquette and subtle lighting.

Hotel Indigo Cardiff is a boutique hotel that has been designed by Matthews Mee Interior Design to evoke classic Welsh heritage.
As with all Hotel Indigo establishments, the surrounding area was carefully researched to discover the location’s intricacies, its history, special events, industry and people. The hotel is then designed around this to provide a unique and more meaningful experience that reflects the hotel’s location.
The Cardiff hotel, which will be managed by Redefine|BDL Hotels, features 122 guest bedrooms and 122 bathrooms, with a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill restaurant located on the roof of the building. The greatest attention has been paid to crafting unique spaces throughout the hotel that reflect the history and vibrancy of the Welsh capital. The guest rooms are themed ‘Made in Wales’, ‘Welsh Industry’ and ‘Music’, with each featuring local art and regionally-sourced natural materials to reflect the city’s strong legacy.
Matthews Mee wanted to mix contemporary style and modern functionality with its heritage-rich designs. It sought an electrical accessories supplier that could support with modern solutions that would complement the design themes while delivering a classy, high-quality look and adhering to the latest guest demands.
Working with contractor Kier and local wholesaler Evans Electrical, Hamilton Litestat was chosen as a solutions provider. Hamilton’s sleek and stylish Hartland collection of box-fix decorative wiring accessories was nominated as the perfect match for the interior design theme. With a vast number of rooms to furnish, a combination of Hartland 1, 2 and 3-gang rocker switches were specified for controlling lighting in each room.
2-gang dual-switched sockets were selected for power supply while further dual-switched sockets equipped with two USB charger points were also fitted at bedsides for easy access. One USB port is 1A rated for mobile phone charging and a second 2.1A USB port is for charging tablets and other devices. With USB charging capabilities, the Hamilton switched sockets meet the demands of modern hotel guests who want to be connected 24/7 using their smart devices.
Hamilton products welcome each guest into their room as a Hamilton hotel key card switch has been installed next to a single rocker switch that controls the lighting in the entrance area. Hamilton also helps make European guests feel at home with the inclusion of a European SCHUKO and dual USB 2-gang switched sockets within a specially manufactured plate installed above a vanity table in each room.
In the 72 ‘Made in Wales’ rooms and the 31 ‘Welsh Industry’ rooms, the decorative accessories were specified in Hartland design and finished in Matt Black with Copper switches and Matt Black inserts. Meanwhile, the 19 ‘Music’ rooms feature Hartland products finished in Antique Brass with Antique Brass switches and Black inserts. All bathrooms are fitted with Hartland plates finished in Satin Steel with White inserts.
Hotel Indigo Cardiff is due to start taking guest bookings in November with much anticipation building for the opening of this stunning hotel.
