Chelsom celebrating 70th anniversary

1000 645 Daniel Fountain

This month Chelsom, leading designer and manufacturer of decorative lighting for the global hospitality and marine sectors, celebrates 70 successful years in business.

Chelsom was founded by Reg and Kay Chelsom in 1947 and began trading as an antique shop in Blackpool under the name ‘The Golden Age’. Soon progressing to three shops, they began to manufacture reproduction period lighting which they distributed to retailers and interior designers throughout the UK. Robert Chelsom took over as CEO in the 1970’s and led the company to the forefront of the hospitality lighting industry. Current Managing Director, Will Chelsom, joined the company in 2006 and has been instrumental in driving the Export division and diversifying into the marine sector.

Robert and Will Chelsom
Innovative in-house designs, high quality manufacturing and excellent service levels have contributed towards winning prestigious projects in more than 70 countries across the world which in turn led to the firm being awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in its seventieth year. Exports now account for around 40% of all sales and Chelsom has built an exceptionally strong client base including major hotel operators such as Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Starwood, Hilton, Accor, Marriott and on the marine side, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Crystal Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Robert Chelsom, Chairman, commented, “I am thrilled that Chelsom is celebrating 70 years as a family business and as we enter our seventieth year I am delighted to be working alongside my son. Will represents the third generation of the family involved in the business and with his ideas for growth, understanding of the industry and a genuine passion for what he does, I am certain we will be celebrating many more anniversaries like this.”

Regent 7 Seas Atrium - Chelsom
Will Chelsom says, “It’s a real achievement to be celebrating our seventieth anniversary this year and still be able to call ourselves a genuine family business. We are also incredibly proud to be able to commemorate this anniversary with the news that we have been awarded the Queen’s Award for International Trade. Not only does the award acknowledge the dedication and passion that every employee has shown in helping to drive the business forward internationally, but it is fitting recognition that this third-generation family business is now at the forefront of the industry thanks to a combination of our product designs, sales strategies and ultimately all the accompanying hard work by every member of the team.”

GROHE flush systems designed to combat water wastage

GROHE flush systems designed to combat water wastage

750 442 Daniel Fountain

A recent study from Waterwise* has found that toilet leakages account for up to 5% of overall per capita water consumption in properties. GROHE’s flush systems are designed to combat such leaks, reducing overall water wastage and contributing to a sustainable property.

Limescale resistant
The study states that many problems are caused by dual flush valves, some of which encounter is-sues when grit or limescale interferes with the flushing mechanism. All of GROHE flush valves fea-ture a bottom seal made of neoprene, which is more resistant to water with high levels of limescale content. This means that the seal does not harden or warp as quickly as a standard seal which can lead to leaks. In cases where the seal or part does need replacing, GROHE products are covered by a 5 year warranty for peace of mind.

Choice of water consumption
GROHE also offers a choice of flush strength to help reduce overall water consumption in the home. Users can choose between 6 litres for the large flush and 4 litres for the small flush. This can be fur-ther reduced to 4 and 2 litres if requested. GROHE flush plates come in a variety of stylish designs, from white to Supersteel finishes, to match any desired bathroom décor.

Enjoy peace of mind
For ultimate reassurance, GROHE’s brand new and unique Sense and Sense Guard are designed to detect leaks to protect your home from water damage. The Sense sends an alert through to your smart phone, while the Sense Guard allows you to shut off the water supply remotely, helping to make the bathroom and home eco efficient.

Michael Gray, GROHE UK Product Manager, comments, “All GROHE products are made with the highest German quality and this is reflected in our long life flush systems, designed to perform sus-tainability and efficiently throughout their lifespans. We are committed to helping our customers protect their home from the often costly and upsetting problem of water damage and therefore all of our products go through rigorous testing before coming to market. Our new Sense and Sense Guard are designed for ultimate peace of mind, allowing homeowners to stop water flow before any real damage is done.”

Holix Collection

Lighting Focus: Jalu launches innovative concept for outdoor lighting

1000 604 Daniel Fountain

Jalu Ltd recently launched its first two collections of striking outdoor floor lamps.

Inspired by outdoor living products whilst working and travelling overseas, Alison Cavey and Juliet Kauffmann have spent the last 12 months “exploring a wide range of novel materials, production methods and designs in order to bring something fresh and exciting to the UK market”, says Juliet.

Jalu’s original designs provide both an object of beauty during the day and ambient light in the evening. Each lamp is hand cast to order in the UK from a novel and versatile material that is lighter than stone and lends itself to a wide range of colours and finishes, producing inherently beautiful and tactile lamps that are fully weatherproof and can be left out all year round.

The company has now unveiled its latest addition to the novel modular Holix Collection – a range of attractive interchangeable table tops that transform the outdoor floor lamps into a ‘table lamp’. Building on the inherent flexibility of this design concept, the existing lid is simply removed and replaced with the hexagonal table top. These new elements echo the aesthetics of the core lamp modules and are available in any of the company’s current palette, including finishes that ensure that each is individually unique. Available in range of heights from coffee table to bistro, the Holix Table Lamp provides both a striking focal point and a stylish piece of furniture for your outdoor entertaining space. Colour matching and bespoke commissions are also available.

Jalu designs are relevant to any setting: garden rooms, patios, terraces, pool sides and gardens. Available to order now, see www.jalu.co.uk.

GROHE Smartbox

Product Spotlight: Introducing the new GROHE Smartbox

751 501 Daniel Fountain

GROHE is delighted to reveal its brand new Smartbox, an extension to the award-winning SmartControl shower line.

The “Push, Turn, Shower” experience has now become even more diverse thanks to new models and combination options. In addition to the stylish on-the-wall model, the new Smartbox offers a concealed behind-the-wall installation. For even greater design variety, both the spray faces and the Smartbox concealed units are now also available in an on-trend white.

Exposed or concealed
The perfect design for every bathroom – the new Smartbox offers an elegant and sleek solution. While using the same self-explanatory push-and-turn buttons as the on-the-wall SmartControl, it features a stylish minimalist design and comes in a wide variety of options. Available in square and round designs as well as in chrome or white finishes, the new shower control system provides a solution for both any bathroom décor and for any installation point. Moreover, the XXL-sized Mono head shower is now also sold separately.

Coordinated or contrasting
The latest additions to this popular line are designed to provide even greater design freedom. In particular, the shower faces on the head showers and the concealed fittings are now available in white, as well as the popular chrome. This allows for coordination with the hand shower, which also features a white shower face. Alternatively, the chrome versions can be used to create exciting design contrasts.

Smart and intuitive
The new GROHE Smartbox uses the latest German technology and is manufactured to the very highest standards of German workmanship, as encapsulated in the label “Made in Germany”. At its heart is the combined push-and-turn technology which gives users finger-tip control of the head and hand shower’s different spray patterns, while allowing control of the water flow rate by rotating the buttons. The intuitive operation is helped by easy to understand pictographs. When the water is switched off, the system automatically memorises the chosen flow rate until the water is switched on again.

For a truly personalised shower experience that pampers the whole body, the generously dimensioned GROHE Rainshower 360 Duo head shower combines the gentle GROHE PureRain or GROHE Rain O2 spray with the energising TrioMassage setting. The invigorating shower experience is completed by the GROHE Power&Soul hand shower delivering flexibility. GROHE CoolTouch technology protects against scalding by preventing the chrome surfaces from heating up.

The GROHE SmartControl shower system has recently won the Green Good Design Award for its combination of stylish design and intuitive flow rate control. Entries to this award are rated not only on their design but also on aspects such as energy consumption, environmental friendliness and resource conservation.

Vero - Duravit

Product Spotlight: Duravit’s Vero Air, timeless geometry re-imagined

731 474 Daniel Fountain

Duravit has launched Vero Air, the next development in the successful Vero series at ISH 2017. The new collection retains the iconic, rectangular character of the Vero washbasins while introducing new technical distinctions.

Through the recent additions of rimless toilets, a new range of bathtubs and various pieces of furniture using c-bonded technology, Vero Air has become a complete bathroom range while retaining its strong, design-focused identity.

In 2001, Duravit’s Vero range laid the foundation for architectural bathroom design. With its understated rectangular form, the successful series concentrates on the essentials and can be combined in a versatile manner. Throughout the creation of the Vero Air bathroom range, Duravit has consistently adhered to the distinctive design language of its predecessor.

The washbasins and bathtubs range impress with reduced edges and a striking linear charm. State-of-the-art technologies used in Duravit’s manufacturing processes allowed for this extremely precise design.

Vero - DuravitSpecifically, the straight interior surface and precise edges of the Vero Air washbasins reflect the collection’s distinct look. The washbasins are available in five sizes (500 mm – 1200 mm), and the above-counter basins come in two sizes (500 and 600 mm). They can be combined with other furniture from the Vero series (designed by Kurt Merki Jr.) or from the L-Cube range (designed by Christian Werner).

Vero - Duravit
The striking design of the Vero Air bathtub is a logical continuation of the Vero design language. By optimising the radii and wall thicknesses (55 mm), the iconic washbasin design is reflected in the acrylic bathtub’s monolithic form, available in four sizes, as a freestanding or built-in version (from 1700 x 700 to 1900 x 900 mm). A special extra feature is the new, discreetly-integrated air whirl system with Piezo buttons. This special push button contains no moveable mechanical parts and is as a result extremely low-maintenance.

The series’ toilets and bidets adhere to the classic rectangular Vero form. The toilet seat and cover can be easily removed for cleaning with the press of a side button. Duravit has optimised the flushing system specifically for the square geometry of the toilet: innovative Rimless® technology demonstrates outstanding performance by flushing the entire inner surface of the bowl. Clever features have been added for greater comfort and hygiene, including the use of HygieneGlaze 2.0 and the optional SensoWash Slim shower-toilet seat meet the highest standards.

Viero UK - the benefits of lime

Guest Blog: Viero – the benefits of using lime plasters and paints

574 407 Daniel Fountain

Viero’s clients often ask why they are so passionate about recommending and specifying our range of lime-based plasters and paints, the answer is so simple it’s difficult…

The qualities of lime are so far-reaching that pinpointing just one to talk about can often be a challenge. In another instalment of our blog exploring our admiration for lime, we round up our top six reasons why lime-based products offer so many benefits to the end user:

BREATHABILITY
Lime is vapour permeable, which means it reduces the risk of trapped moisture and therefore makes the chances of damage far less. This limits the requirement for future maintenance work.

COMFORT
Its ability to absorb and release moisture in a cyclical fashion helps to boost a room’s comfort as it will not encourage humid conditions.

BEAUTY
Provides soft textures with graceful and organic movements which results in a beautiful finish. It’s contemporary feel is worthy of any interior or exterior surface.

LONGLASTING
It will outlive us all as it has an indefinite lifecycle. Not only does it survive, in fact, it gets better over time

SURFACE PRESERVING
Acting as an anti-bacterial surface, it is able to neutralise the development of substances such as mould and fungus. It hardly ceases to amaze us with its unrivalled qualities.

950 646 Daniel Fountain

Following its UK debut at The Water Studio during CDW 2017, the new hansgrohe Metropol range of mixers makes a striking appearance with its consistently geometric design language.

Wilton Carpets

Signature style from Wilton at London Luton Airport

750 500 Daniel Fountain

The opening of a prestige passenger facility for Signature Flight Support, at London Luton Airport, marks a European flagship for the company, the world’s largest network of Fixed Base Operations.

Within the stunning 3DReid designed building, bespoke woven carpet from Wilton Carpets, inspired by the building’s modernist architecture, provides a luxurious floor to welcome flight crew and passengers.

Boasting the latest in technologies for entertainment, communications, passenger and crew amenities, and onward travel solutions; the building’s interior was designed by Hi Design, involved in a long-running consultancy since the plans for the facility were first conceptualised back in 2011.
Hi Design conceived a linear design that would respect the language of the space, while simultaneously offsetting the sinuous curves of the interior.

Susan Whittle, managing director, Hi Design, explained: “We focused on Signature Flight Support’s clients and asked ourselves what kind of hotels they stay in, what are their homes like, what cars they drive and ultimately, what experience and level of finish they would expect in such a facility. We then concentrated on exceeding expectations.”

Hi Design turned to the quality and luxury of bespoke wool-rich woven axminster from Wilton Carpets, creating a series of three coordinated stripe designs. At times, the carpet incorporates a border of corporate blue, to reflect the colour’s use on high-gloss ceilings and walls, or is juxtaposed with hard flooring to create zones of luxurious relaxation. Featuring in meeting rooms, VIP lounge, bar and crew facilities; each area has been given a bespoke variant on the stripe sequencing and colour selection, creating subtle distinction between areas, while providing a notable link to the next.

The clean simplicity of the carpet took time and patience to achieve, with multiple CADs and hand trials needed to make sure the finished carpet reflected the identity of Signature Flight Support and provided a luxurious and welcoming atmosphere demanded by the operator’s high-wealth clients.
Woven axminster was selected in a nine-row construction to deliver appearance retention and a quality expected by the international clientele, while still falling within a commercially viable budget. Susan Whittle, noted:

“Finding the right calibre of suppliers was key to the project’s success as we needed to specify high-quality, luxury products that would reflect the tastes and expectations of Signature Flight Support’s discerning clients. We worked closely with trusted suppliers, including Wilton Carpets, to design bespoke one-off pieces for the interior and we are delighted with the finished result.”

Featuring 80% British wool and 20% nylon, the carpets were woven in Wiltshire, bringing the quality and attention-to-detail of British manufacturing that makes Wilton Carpets one of the country’s most highly-regarded names in carpet for the hospitality sector.

Power Of Colour

Trend Report: Style Library Contract – ‘The Power of Colour’

650 330 Daniel Fountain

At the beginning of this year Style Library Contract shared 4 design trends they see as having the greatest influence in hospitality design during 2017.

After Clerkenwell Design Week, the home of leading British brands Zoffany, Harlequin, Sanderson, Scion, Morris & Co., Anthology and FROne share four colour trends for Summer 2017 – ZEN, NOMAD, BLISS, and Pantone’s GREENERY…

NOMAD
The word Harlequin means ‘varied in colour or decoration’, which sums the in-house studio’s eclectic design ethos perfectly. Driven by their love of colour, collections are inspired from around the world. The intensity of colour found in nature is evident in Fauvisimo’s powerful colour palette which ranges from cobalt blues and deep magentas to moody greys, on trend mustards, highlights of muted greens, blush pinks and honey shades.

Nomad - Style Library ContractZEN
Moody metropolitan tones in subtle textures and combinations of matt and shine capture the essence of Anthology, a new generation of contract specification fabrics and wallcoverings. Sophisticated complexity that interior designers and hotel groups worldwide can easily access.

Zen - Style Library ContractBLISS
Harlequin’s Poetica range is an enchanting homage to the natural beauty and intrinsic charm of England’s spectacular countryside and delightful cottage gardens. Drawn with a refreshing lightness of hand and tinted in watery hues, it creates a shabby-chic contemporary look for a romantic escape.

GREENERY
As part of their Alchemy of Colour research, the Zoffany studio identified their own unique colour palette, which includes a dazzling malachite green. During this process Peter Gomez, Head of Design for the Zoffany Studio, experimented with a number of green shades and advises, ‘Be bold and use this colour in its purest form in a plain fabric, a great way to introduce a contemporary look is to champion green in a lustre effect against natural linens. Green really sits well off shades of sunstone and russets.

Jeremy Quantrill, managing director of Dernier & Hamlyn explains how beautiful, bespoke lighting does not have to be as expensive as you may think…

Having products specially commissioned to make the hotel interiors you design unique is usually highly desirable but often considered impractical within budgetary constraints. Whether you are talking furniture, carpets, artwork or lighting, bringing your personal touch makes the setting exclusive in every sense of the world.

Dernier & HamlynIt is often assumed that a high price tag always comes with individually specified items. However, with lighting, bespoke doesn’t have to blow the budget. We spend a lot of our time working with designers to produce lighting that meets their aesthetic and practical requirements cost-effectively whether it’s a one-off statement fitting or hundreds of table lamps or wall lights.

——

We have worked on hundreds of projects around the world where the interior designers’ initial ideas cannot be achieved with the money they have to spend. So, we talk with them about what’s important and, based on our experience built up over many years in lighting manufacture, we come up with solutions that meet their requirements but are less expensive. We can accomplish this in all sorts of ways.

Dernier & Hamlyn
Often it’s by adapting the manufacturing methods and techniques that are employed, so that products can be created more quickly resulting in reduced costs. Maybe modifications can be made to the design which do not change the overall look and feel, but, for example, reduce the amount of materials needed or reduce the number of processes involved resulting in significant price reductions, especially where this is replicated for an order of hundreds of products.

——

Or by looking at the lamps used we can often cut how many fittings are needed to provide the required light levels and quality. Frequently we can replace an especially costly material with something that looks similar but is much less expensive by using finishing techniques that give it the effect of, say, solid brass or copper, when in fact it is much cheaper, and easier to install, lightweight aluminium.

Dernier & Hamlyn
Time after time the highly skilled team in our London factory look at ways in which a light fitting can fulfil several purposes. So a chandelier may look as if it’s just hanging in a hotel lobby as a thing of beauty, but could also conceal emergency lighting so that there is no need to produce two separate fittings which can help to cut costs too.

So, next time you are thinking about lighting, whether it’s for the next must go to restaurant in London, a five star hotel in Dubai, a boutique set up in the Midlands or anywhere else for that matter, don’t discount the idea of commissioning bespoke lighting as out of hand. Consider carefully what you’re aiming to accomplish and whether there are ways to get there that are outside of usual thinking. And if you need help give us a call, we relish a challenge and will be delighted to talk through your aspirations and how we might be able to help you achieve them.

Luv Oval above counter - Duravit

Spotlight: Duravit’s new materials combine performance and aesthetics

750 598 Daniel Fountain

Duravit is continuously breaking new ground when it comes to introducing innovative products derived from new materials – combining performance with aesthetics whilst being sensuous and inviting. The latest Duravit new materials include; DuraCeram® and DuraSolid® which play an essential role in their latest Luv designs.

The Danish designer Cecilie Manz has encapsulated all of these vital characteristics in the Luv collection, combining Nordic purism and timeless emotional elegance with soft shapes that follow a stringent geometry.

DuraCeram®
Conventional bathroom ceramic material requires a thickness of 12 to 14 mm to ensure the necessary strength after firing. For finer forms Duravit has developed a new, innovative material called DuraCeram®, which is thinner and notable for its extreme accuracy, high strength and elegant finish. In this way, a new dimension in design diversity is achieved: maximum elegance without any sacrifices in terms of quality, robustness and ease of cleaning.

This material is for example used for the Luv oval above-counter basins with subtle lines, generous inner basins, and clean edges.

Cecilie Manz’s refined sense of materials and colour is known all over the world. The optionally glazed exterior of the wash bowls is available in satin matte White, Grey or Sand. The colour palate of matt lacquers and glazes in soft shades was developed exclusively for Duravit and emphasizes the fresh character of Luv.

DuraSolid®
With DuraSolid®, the Duravit AG research team developed a new and unusual mineral material. The interaction of selected raw materials creates a high-tech material that is particularly suitable for the production of baths and shower trays. It stands for durability, high stability and slip-resistance.

In addition, thanks to the special material quality, it can be used to create new shapes. The free standing Luv bath tub made from DuraSolid® is as unique as it is inviting and a matt surface provides a premium, velvety finish. The material is warm and pleasant to the touch, and the result is a success in both look and feel as well as being easy to clean.

Ganesh Prasad Chelsom

Hotel Lighting Q&A: Ganesh Prasad – Chelsom Head of Technical

1024 442 Daniel Fountain

Ganesh Prasad recently joined international lighting specialists Chelsom as Head of Technical. Having worked in India, the Middle East and the UK he brings a wealth of experience in all aspects of technical lighting with a speciality in LED light sources, their design and function.

Since he joined the company, Ganesh has noticed an interesting difference in the type and direction of technical questioning that comes from the interior design industry as against those from an architectural background. Questions tend to relate to creating ambience rather than the hard technical facts covering industry standards, detailed light output measurement etc.

Q: Are there any specific light level requirements for hotel guestrooms?
GP: To answer simply there is no specific legislation or standards relating to light levels in hotel guestrooms. However associations like CIBSE and SLL in the UK or IESNA in North America do set down guidelines rather than mandatory requirements. They would cover a suggested light level for task areas such as desk or reading areas like bedside or armchair. In essence though, the correct light levels for guestrooms are defined by guest satisfaction. The biggest single complaint registered by hotel visitors is the lack of sufficient lighting in guestrooms. Such spaces are multifunctional and designers should therefore build in sufficient light points with optimum light output to ensure guests can work, read, relax and live. There is one part of guestroom lighting which does however follow stringent regulations and that is emergency lighting for use during a power failure, fire or other emergency. Such requirements can be found in building regulations or codes which may vary according to region or type of property.

Q. If so how do we measure the light output of a decorative light fitting?
GP: The output from decorative light fittings is measured in lumens and it’s a numerical scale starting from zero which is complete darkness and going upwards. Photometric test equipment would be required in laboratory conditions to give an absolutely accurate lumen output reading but for example a 10W LED lamp will give an output of around 1000 lumens. Of course once that lamp is shrouded by a diffuser or fabric shade, lumen level will drop significantly.

Lighting Q&A with GaneshQ. Is there any difference between types of switch?
GP: Operationally there is no difference and when the switch is open, then the power is off and when the switch is closed the power reaches the light source. For aesthetic reasons, designers may choose a push button switch, a rocker switch, a toggle switch or a cord switch. Touch switches are another alternative but are often misunderstood in hotel guestrooms when the visitor looks frantically for a switch that isn’t there. Dimmer switches are of course another option and are usually of the rotary type or slide type.

I am often asked about two-way switching, in other words a light fitting that can be switched from the unit itself or from the entry point to the room. Technically it is entirely possible providing we are made aware of the requirement before manufacture so that a four core cable can be installed giving 2 separate lives.

Q. Dimming always seems complicated why is that?
GP: Dimming itself is not at all complicated. However there are many types of dimming systems and technologies in the marketplace just as there are many different types of dimmable lamps or light sources. Where confusion can arise is in the compatibility of the systems, the intermediate switching and the lamps themselves. This confusion arises particularly with LED light sources whose compatibility needs more care. The simple answer is ask a specialist such as Chelsom who can advise on the best lamp and dimming technology combinations which will ensure a full range of smooth dimming without flicker or noise.

Q. LED lamps seem to be the only way forward is this right?
GP: Yes! Legislation over recent years has banned the manufacture of higher wattage less efficient lamp types; LED’s consume far less energy than other lamp options; they last up to ten times longer than a compact fluorescent equivalent; they are dimmable; they now give out a wide range of colour temperatures including the same warm light as incandescent; they contain no toxic substance such as mercury nor give out any UV glare; they are instant start with no flicker and most importantly costs continue to come down through mass production.

Q. Can you explain IP?
GP: IP stands for Ingress Protection and ratings consist of 2 numerical digits on a scale of 0-9, the first digit covering solids such as dust or insects and the second liquids. Most interior hospitality lighting products should have an IP20 rating which basically means it is not possible to access internal electrics and live parts. Bathroom lighting would require, in certain cases, an IP44 rating meaning luminaires are fairly well protected against solid ingress and water ingress. What is important in bathrooms are the zones which are described in the attached diagram and which cover areas created by the bath or shower and areas within 600mm of the bath or shower. For zone 1 only low voltage fittings with a minimum rating IPX5 are allowed. For zone 2 fittings with a minimum rating of IPX4 are required. Outside zone 2 any luminaires can be used providing they are protected by an RCD.

Lighting Q&A with GaneshQ. What is colour temperature?
GP: The colour temperature of a lamp relates to how the human eye sees the colour emitted from a light source once it’s illuminated. The range is from a ‘cold light’ to a ‘warm light’ and the colder the temperature, the more blue is involved and the warmer the temperature, the more red is involved. The colour temperature itself is measured in Kelvins and the higher numbers are colder say 6000 Kelvins with the lower numbers being warmer say 2000 Kelvins. Recent scientific research has shown that a colder blue light makes you more alert as it gives the feeling of bright light in the middle of the day. Warmer red light is more relaxing as it replicates dusk at the end of the day. There are no legal or guideline requirements for colour temperature in hotel guestrooms but once again guest satisfaction is the driving force. The general consensus is that 2700 Kelvin gives the right ambience as it is the closest to incandescent light which we have all been used to for a hundred years.

Q. Is it easy to fit USB ports and will the same port charge all devices?
GP: A USB port requires sufficient space including a depth of about 30mm. As long as a table lamp base or wall light backplate has that space it is relatively easy to fit the ports. There are 3 different types of ports relating to the 3 different types of connector in the marketplace. We usually work with Type A which is widely used with most smartphones and tablets. The voltage required for all devices is 5V but the amperage varies from device to device. For example an iPad will take 2.1A and an iPhone will take 0.5A. You need to be sure therefore that the USB connectors are compatible with the higher load capacity in order to charge all devices.

Ganesh adds “I joined Chelsom at a very exciting time for guestroom lighting. Not only is LED technology developing extremely fast but dimming systems and guestroom lighting management systems are playing a large part. Lighting management can create huge savings in running costs whilst giving the guests a more satisfying stay at the hotel. The crucial thing is to talk to the experts and talk to them early in the project.”

EasyLink by Hypnos

Product Spotlight: Hypnos launches EasyLink for hospitality industry

850 566 Daniel Fountain

Award-winning British bed manufacturer and Royal Warrant holder, Hypnos, has launched its new linking bar innovation, EasyLink specifically for the hospitality sector.

Following consultation, Hypnos has developed its latest innovation in response to the increasing demand from housekeepers for Zip and Link beds that are easier and safer to use, and quicker to transform room function.

EasyLink by HypnosWith EasyLink, linking bars are placed on top of the bed base instead of the bottom, meaning housekeepers no longer have to lift the bed to access the linking bar underneath the bed base, or have an unsightly linking bar on the front. Housekeepers will be able to operate the new linking bar by standing up, rather than kneeling to operate external and under linked options, making the job more comfortable and safe to do.

Clare Taylor, Hypnos Contract Beds Marketing Manager, said: “As a trusted supplier to some of the largest independent hotels, groups, spas and resorts in the world, Hypnos holds a reputation for innovating products that meet the requirements of our customers in this sector. Wilton's work at Statham Lodge

Wilton celebrates understated elegance at Statham Lodge Hotel

850 567 Daniel Fountain

Bespoke woven axminster carpets from Wilton Carpets have been used to extraordinary effect throughout the public areas and suites of the Georgian period Grade II listed Statham Lodge, an award-winning Cheshire wedding venue.

With the various patterns of existing carpets showing signs of wear on thresholds after 20 years of intense use, the time had come to replace and so Statham Lodge turned to the quality of wool-rich woven carpets from Wilton.

Emma Walker, project manager at Statham Lodge, explains: “In the past, we had to adopt a rather piecemeal approach to our carpet to get something down as quick as possible, often just rolling out a stock pattern as opposed to one designed for the space. However, we noticed that a bespoke carpet copied from an original Georgian creation had stood the test of time. Having made the decision to start from scratch and create our very own look, this seemed a natural starting point.”

For the entrance hall, reception and Shelley Suite, Emma tasked Wilton with creating an effect that referenced hand-made Savonnerie style area rugs, inspired by traditional Georgian designs found in 18th Century country houses such as the Robert Adam’s designed Syon Park. Working closely to this brief; Wilton’s head of creative, Damian Roscoe, created a design that achieves an air of understated elegance and with the ability to last for another 20 years without looking dated.

“We wanted the carpets to feel like an heirloom piece and so opted for traditional Georgian designs and a muted colour palette also referencing the period, allowing us to make the most of the light and airy feel afforded by the archetypal Georgian features found within the building,” continues Emma.

With the Shelley Suite, the design was reworked to deliver a more formal feel suiting the room’s use for civil ceremonies and in a palette made to work with any wedding colour scheme. The rug effect design works here too, as it creates a defined shape with symmetry that sits well with a centre aisle for ceremonies.

In the substantial Gainsborough Suite, the approach to carpet design took into consideration a need for a neutral feel, again to work with wedding colour schemes; while reflecting the grandeur of the setting. As the principle room for wedding breakfasts and receptions, it was important that the carpet didn’t overwhelm the space, yet that it also wasn’t lacking in character and so Wilton designed a statement Georgian inspired carpet that retains the understated elegance of carpets elsewhere. By giving the intricate pattern room to breathe through use of borders, centre motifs and large areas of plain background colour; the design fits the brief perfectly.

“Emma was clear from the beginning that the carpets needed to work not only in respecting the history of the building, but also in the practicality of Statham Lodge’s status as one of the best wedding venues in the north west,” explains Damian Roscoe. “The key was to evoke Georgian style with low contrast between colours, so that they didn’t feel too sharp and new.

“Creating a Savonnerie rug look with such an intricate design, different in individual rooms, was a huge challenge, so we introduced a subtle floral diamond backdrop to work as an effective border that still had an elegant period feel to bring everything together. The results are extraordinary and show what can be achieved when building owner and carpet manufacturer work closely together with a clear objective.”

As part of a wider refurbishment to the interior, including wall panelling and a new colour scheme, the carpet also proves the importance of designing areas in harmony; bringing the overall feel desired while retaining an individual sense that responds to the unique requirements of rooms. Woven in a high-performance blend of 80% pure new wool and nylon, the bespoke 10-row axminster carpet is made to last and retains ease of maintenance; vital for Statham Lodge.

Emma Walker continues: “A lot of people were nervous about the colour palette, faded blues and reds atop light stones, as it breaks so much from convention, but this was important to make sure the carpets offered a ‘blank canvas’ for weddings. Also, we didn’t want a ‘pub carpet’ feel just because it might be better at hiding stains.

“A subtle scree in the backdrop of the design helps to minimise the appearance of stains, while also contributing to that all-important sense of faded elegance that purveys a subtly relaxed feel. So far, chocolate cake and red wine have posed no threat and the carpet has responded 100 per cent to spot cleaning. A reflection of the quality of fibre and construction employed by Wilton Carpets.”

Crafted on Wilton Carpets’ computer-controlled high speed axminster looms in Wiltshire, the stunning carpets were woven within tight timescales to meet Statham Lodge’s need for an installation process that meant the venue could stay completely operational. Careful planning of the design and expert installation have led to a first-rate carpet that has been exceptionally well-received:

“The response to the carpet was immediate and we’ve received lots of fantastic comments on social media from our guests. When you say it’s a Wilton carpet, it seems to make everyone happy,” concludes Emma Walker.

Faux Creation - Viero

Client Spotlight: Viero UK’s work with Faux Creation

576 414 Daniel Fountain

It’s time for another edition of Viero’s ‘meet the clients’ feature where we enter into the inspiring world of our good friends at Faux Creation.

Led by Jason Ebers, a well-respected artisan in the specialist decoration community for his application, professionalism and fresh perspective on old world techniques, his team offers great creative input into Viero UK’s business.

While based in New York City, Jason spent a number of years working and training with his friend and mentor, the world-renowned artisan Pierre Finkelstein.

We spent time with Jason and his team at their studio in Cambridgeshire to find out more about Faux Creation and their partnership with us.

Q. Tell us a bit more about your business…
A. Specialist decoration is our core business. We are able to offer our clients fully-serviced solutions, delivering both interior and exterior surface finishes using plaster and paint. The business was formed in the late 1990s and operated for many years out of New York and often involved projects globally. It was around 2008 that I focused on moving back to the UK with my family and trying to tap into the design market here. Now, we have a creative studio in Cambridgeshire with lots of painting projects, historic renovation work and a route into London’s design market.

Faux Creation - VieroQ. What projects are you working on at the moment?
A. Our business spans across a wide range of high-end commercial and residential buildings. We work hard to create incredibly unique surface designs for creative agencies. I truly believe that the UK is a fantastic hub for creative talent and that’s very much the circles we like to move in and work within. To pick out a specific project, we recently completed a job at a 17th century manor house. When we arrived, we were faced with all kinds of decorative issues. As a result, we set about a journey to peel back all the masonry and concrete elements and use more breathable lime-based products to restore the finishes. For us, this job was a real noble calling. The work we have done will last through our lifetime and this is truly inspiring.

Faux Creation - VieroWhat do you like about working with Viero UK?
A.We first met Chris and Peter at a Decorex exhibition around three years ago and right from the off they were both very personable. Viero as a global business has a big corporate structure, but these guys bring a family feel to how it works on a day-to-day basis. The support service really is second to none. As for the Viero UK products, they give us a creative toolkit to create unique surface designs. The possibilities are fantastic and we keep finding new, unique characteristics in the products every day. They offer us the scope to imagine and create. In our creative studio, we love to get our hands dirty, work with the products and discover new possibilities. You learn as you use the products and taking time away to work with the products is when the magic really happens.

Q. What do you think the future holds for your business and the surface design industry?
A. From a business point of view, we will be concentrating on developing the full-service element of our offering and creating more cutting edge design for the market. These are the kinds of projects that really excite us in a professional sense. I believe the industry is going in a fascinating direction with some sophisticated, softer surface designs. It’s important we always keep in touch with the changing trends.

Viero expanding its global presence

Viero increasing its global presence

It’s easy to see that traditional Italian plaster is emerging as a worldwide trend. As well as our growing portfolio here in the UK, the Viero brand is very much increasing its global presence.

Just this year, six new showrooms have opened for business. Versital faux marble shower

Opinion: Versital – ‘UK ‘faux’ marble market set for rapid growth’

1000 660 Daniel Fountain

Marble remains one of the key trends for 2017, and the desire for marble inspired interiors is stronger than ever. The pitfalls of real marble are a thing of the past thanks to the emerging market of ‘faux’ marble surfaces, meaning erosion and staining can be easily avoided.

Versital are specialists in the manufacturing of cultured marble, using stone resin to create a like-for-like finish in luxurious designs. Gemma Stockberger, Sales, Marketing & Development for Versital UK tells us why there is a growing demand for marble alternatives in the hospitality sector:

Faux, or cultured marble, is 100% waterproof, unlike the real thing
As beautiful as marble may look, its properties mean it is a problematic material to use when it comes to interior design. The finish and look of such surfaces can be easily tarnished when they come into contact with water. Versital’s unique formula is created from a composition of natural minerals and pigments combined with resin to give a hard wearing durable finish. It is also 100% waterproof and non-porous, making it an excellent alternative for bathroom, restaurant and bar surfaces. Versital surfaces are not compromised by contact with water, and will not suffer from watermarks or lime scale, ensuring surfaces that look as good as new for years to come.

Versital bar top specified in Marchmont Arms, Hemel Hempstead

Versital bar top specified in Marchmont Arms, Hemel Hempstead – Mitchells & Butlers

Faux marble surfaces can be bespoke and hand-made to order
Versital surfaces are ideal for a number of applications including shower panels, shower trays, vanity tops, bar panels and table tops. The range of applications is endless, and this is because stone resin is very easy to cut and can be moulded to completely bespoke sizes, ready for installation. Created to individual specification, Versital can provide surfacing solutions for any project, regardless of shape and size.

Customise your ‘faux’ marble for a truly unique look
Whether it’s a traditional white finish you are looking for, or a more contemporary twist on a classic design, when opting for ‘faux’ marble, the exact look can be tailored to individual taste and requirements. Versital offers an extensive colour palette, with over 90 finishes to choose from. From classic white marbles such as ‘Arabesque’ to dusky pastels, moody greys, and on trend black marble, Versital creates the look of marble as never seen before.

Versital - Bar and Catering

Versital – Bar and Catering

Fuss-free cutting and scribing
When specifying these surfaces, it is worth considering that specialist masonry equipment is required, and cutting the material on site is often difficult and a messy job. In comparison, Versital’s cultured marble surfaces can be cut, scribed and installed quickly with minimal fuss and mess. What’s more, ordinary wood working tools can be used on site for ease of use and to ensure an accurate cut and a perfect fit.

Avoid complex drainage upheaval in bathroom renovations
Bathroom renovations can be costly and take time, especially when re-plumbing and relocating drainage is concerned. By opting for a bespoke shower tray from Versital, the need for this is eliminated, reducing costs, and ensuring the overall vision for a bathroom’s design can be achieved. Versital’s shower trays are manufactured to individual project specifications, and can be designed to fit the smallest and most awkwardly-shaped bathrooms, to those looking to create an oversized, statement shower enclosure or wetroom. Versital can even create shower trays that fit around corners and existing pipework, to ensure minimal interference to plumbing and help to keep costs down.

Axor Uno by Hansgrohe

Product Spotlight: AXOR Uno – Purist design in perfection

750 499 Daniel Fountain

AXOR Uno is the new bathroom collection from AXOR. Pipes, the oldest way of channelling water, define the collection’s two style variations – for the washbasin, the shower, and the bathtub. AXOR Uno was created in collaboration with the Stuttgart-based Phoenix Design studio.

Formal, simple design language and the aesthetics of construction
AXOR Uno follows the uncompromising design principles of the original Purist movement with consistent construction: two precisely shaped cylinders joined together at a right angle. The spouts and handles are available in radical or gently rounded versions. The precise contours and the raised proportions in the golden ratio of the taps are their defining stylistic features, lending them a special aura and giving them a sleek and elegant look in any setting. Special surface finishes impart added radiance to the collection, which comprises over 70 products for washbasins, showers and bathtubs.

Purist functional design
Radical and modern Purism – both stylistic directions emphasise simplicity of function. Operation of the AXOR Uno taps has been reduced to the essential: the flow of water is started or stopped by pressing the Select button, by turning the so-called “Zero” handle, or by lifting the ergonomically shaped loop handle.

“Implemented at the highest technological levels, AXOR Uno is the quintessence of Purism: clean, minimalistic, subtle. This collection embodies the most fascinating shapes of Purism, both in form and in function. Each individual product reflects the material’s worth, and precise and consistent construction. The underlying factor is our commitment to delivering perfection in design, craftsmanship and functionality,” Silke Giessler, Head of AXOR Brand Marketing, explains.

Newmor Stephen Walter

Newmor collaborate with artist Stephen Walter

820 468 Daniel Fountain

Stephen Walter’s drawings are a tangle of signs, words and images that draw the viewer into the artist’s intricate worlds. A graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University and the Royal College of art, he is best-known for his series of hand-drawn maps, done in enormous detail and layered with both visual and textual information.

Each work is an intricate world in itself; a tangle of words and symbols that make up a complex of hidden meanings and wider contradictions. Through drawing, photography and printmaking, his artworks explore the meaning of objects, the glory of maps, our place in the world, and the potential legacy that we bequeath to future generations.

Our new collaborative collection brings Stephen’s iconic drawings to commercial interiors. We have nine designs which we can resize to wall dimensions and print onto any of our base materials, including colours, textures, metallics and window films. The prints retain all the charm and intricacy of the original artwork. Below are a couple of examples of the new designs, the full collection can be seen here.

Newmor with Stephen WalterCommissioned in 2010 for the London Transport Museum, London Subterranea geographically tracks the routes of London’s Lost Rivers, its main sewers, the tube network and it’s ‘ghost’ stations including the Crossrail project. It also pinpoints archaeological finds, ruins, known plague pits, secret governmental tunnels, the Mail Rail and the Water Ring Main tunnels. Epithets to the ‘underworld’ of crime, and the scenes of notable killings such as the acid-bath murders get a look in. So too does the site of the infamous Tyburn Tree and its many buried corpses that still lie in its wake undiscovered.

Hub shows the district names, art galleries and places of interest in London’s central areas. It takes on the style of early ‘picture-maps’ of London printed before the Great Fire of 1666. Here, the topographical features such as churches and houses are drawn pictorially upon a street plan. Whilst Hub, doesn’t claim to be a comprehensive map of all the spaces and organisations that exhibit and contribute to London’s art world, it provides an insight into where many of the recognised art spaces operated within the city, with its three main cluster areas of activity – the West End, Hoxton and Hackney.

Viero DTK Artworks

Client Spotlight: Viero and DKT Artworks working together…

850 672 Daniel Fountain

Viero UK is proud to partner with some of the most creative studios in the world of surface design. DKT Artworks, based in south west London, has a reputation for producing some of the finest sculptures, murals, trompe l’oeil, decorative designs and polished plasters.

Our relationship spans back more than twenty years, in which time we have supported them to deliver on some of their most prestigious projects. We recently spoke to members of the creative team to find out more about their work and our long-standing partnership.

Tell us a bit more about your business…
Our business is all about large-scale decorative art. We are a London-based design house launched in the late 1970s. We work across a wide range of design disciplines in various materials including plaster, mosaic, metals, semi-precious stones and glass. Our ethos is that there are no boundaries to the creativity of our work.

Viero DTK ArtworksWhat projects are you working on at the moment?
One of our largest areas of work is within the marine industry. We have years of experience in producing work for superyachts. We take on some very large-scale design challenges and come up with practical solutions to implementing these very challenging briefs.

How long have you been using Viero UK’s range of products?
DKT has been working with Viero for more than 25 years. During this time, we have used a variety of their products including Lithos, Ikos, Visocalce, Granisplast, Hydro and Marmorin Sand.

Viero DTK ArtworksWhat do you like about working with Viero UK?
Viero UK have a wide range of lime based and decorative plasters. They all have different qualities and their own individual characteristics but are all consistent in application. We are always looking to come up with fresh ideas and creavitive textures and the Viero range opens up the possibilities for this. We have a dedicated team of six artisans in our London studio who take care of our plastering projects. Their work often involves meeting challenging design briefs and tight deadlines, so Viero UK’s efficient support and delivery surface is another reason why our partnership works so well.

What do you feel the future holds for your business?
For a company that has worked in Europe for years, a break from the European Union in the next two years means these are uncertain times. However, our ethos has never been to become complacent and to always look for new solutions. We intend to continue to build on our reputation and look to those long-term relationships that we’ve built over the years to consolidate this.

Versital marble finish bar panels

Versital specified for stylish Newcastle pizzeria renovation

998 588 Daniel Fountain

Versital is delighted to have been specified by award-winning interior design practice, Collective Design, for its latest restaurant renovation project. The popular Central Oven & Shaker, a stylish pizzeria in Newcastle, recently underwent a thorough renovation throughout the premises.

Central Oven & Shaker is a popular eatery based in Neville Street, in the heart of Newcastle. It offers a selection of artisan pizzas and thirst-quenching cocktails, and seamlessly blends industrial inspired design and natural materials for a modern and vibrant setting. Versital’s faux marble finish surfaces perfectly complement the wooden accents used throughout the restaurant.

Central Oven Shaker NewcastleVersital’s bespoke surfaces were supplied for Central’s bar tops and front panels in a white faux marble finish. Versital products are designed to beautifully replicate the luxurious appearance and intricate veining of the natural material, while providing added benefits. Whilst natural marble is prone to erosion and staining, making it an impractical material for design, Versital has provided a solution that maintains the beauty of marble without any of the problems it is commonly associated with.

The brand’s 100% non-porous surfaces are completely bespoke, making them suitable for an array of applications in the domestic and commercial sectors. Versital offers an impressive range of over 90 colours with finishes in marble, granite, sparkle and high gloss.

Versital bespoke front panels“We specialise in designing commercial environments such as bars, restaurants and nightclubs, and so we were seeking a manufacturer with similar expertise and insight into the hospitality industry. Versital has impressive credentials, and the extensive colour and finish range of bespoke surfaces perfectly fitted our brief”, says Simon Mcilwraith, Director and Owner of Collective Design.

Gemma Stockberger, Head of Marketing and Sales for Versital UK adds “Versital surfaces are ideal for hospitality applications, because their durability and resistance to staining is a necessary pre-requisite for environments where there could be numerous food and drink spillages. The faux marble finish will continue to look as good as new for years to come, eliminating the fear of having to replace them later. We are delighted to collaborate with such a revered design practice, who has been awarded Interior Designer of the Year four times at the Northern Design Awards, and with the final look that has been achieved in Central Oven & Shaker.”

Viero at Manchester Airport

Project Spotlight: A flying finish for Viero at Manchester Airport

1024 768 Daniel Fountain

After a busy few weeks, our latest project is finally ready for take off at Manchester Airport. We’ve been busy applying a selection of bespoke surface finishes in the executive areas of Manchester Airport’s revamped Terminal 3.

“We were tasked by the interior design agency to create a runway theme along the corridor leading in to the executive lounge areas. This was further complimented with a pitted bronze finish throughout the executive lounge area,” said Specification Manager David Wragg.

“We worked in collaboration and brought the vision to life through the samples to ensure we achieved the desired results.”

The look was achieved by combining a pitted texture with a smooth, matt finish using Marmorin Hydro. Creative Director Jason Ebers said: “It was a pretty unique project and a bit of a headscratcher to begin with.

“We had to find a way to transpose the design onto the main plaster finish, keep the design perfectly straight and ensure there were no marks or damage left on the plaster.

“We managed to achieve it with a combination of skill and our due diligence, carefully mapping out the design on a CAD program before we arrived on site. The planning was extremely important, but it’s what we do. It’s all in a day’s work.”

The end result is one which the client is delighted with after a team of five of Viero UK’s applicators spent almost two weeks on site bringing it all together.

Jason added: “It was a design challenge which really got our creative juices flowing and we were all fired up to deliver. The whole team enjoyed being a part of the project.”

Artisan by Wilton

Product Spotlight: Wilton proves its carpet craft with Artisan

1000 581 Daniel Fountain

Created to meet the needs of the pub and leisure industry, Artisan is the latest collection to come from the design team at Wilton Carpets; a multi-layer approach that brings new meaning to classic florals and damasks, as well as modern geometrics.

Continuing a stream of new launches from the Wiltshire-based woven carpet specialist, the collection brings contemporary combinations of pattern and colour in styles that bring authenticity, practicality and longevity to demanding hospitality and leisure locations. With a total of 17 designs, Artisan provides an impressive array, as Damian Roscoe, head of creative, explains:

“With Artisan, we’ve explored various themes in pattern, using layers and distressed effects on top of scrolls, florals, damask and modern geometrics to reveal interesting new details and a textured aesthetic that is both relaxed and practical. Capturing classic looks perfect for heritage interiors, as well as modern geometrics that have a laidback feel, Artisan has something for every style.

“The relaxed look to the designs is worth focus; highly structured and rigid design can often be too formal, or even look old-fashioned and overly fussy in the often-complex layouts of these locations. Giving Artisan a hand-worked, distressed and relaxed feel that blurs lines and boundaries counters this; while remaining thoroughly usable.”

Available in a sesame palette that features rich hues of gold, moss and ruby, the Artisan collection’s practical colourways continue the collection’s theme of usability in a wide range of hospitality and leisure environments. Working well to complement feature furniture and lighting without being overpowering or brash, it is a well-considered collection that can be used straight off the loom.

Woven in a seven-row quality from a wool-rich 80/20 blend for appearance retention and lasting underfoot performance, all Artisan carpets come standard in a narrowloom width, preferred for tight and complex layouts. As always, thanks to its flexible Wiltshire-based manufacturing, Wilton Carpets can also make any Artisan pattern in broadloom format for large areas, as well as in bespoke colours if required.

Laufen by Kartell

Kartell by Laufen takes part at the Milan Design Week

999 819 Daniel Fountain

At the Milan Design Week, from 4 to 9 April 2017, Kartell by Laufen presents new ceramic pieces, furniture complements and special finishes that evolve the products into iconic and stimulating objects, capable of triggering emotions and embellishing the bath, which becomes a true retreat in the domestic setting.

Kartell by Laufen, designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba and launched in 2013, is a project based on the fusion of the best characteristics of two companies: Kartell for its originality and design of plastic objects, and Laufen Bathrooms for its quality and rigor in the field of ceramics.

From the outset the collection has focused on maximum flexibility and versatility, meeting the requirements of many different tastes. Today the range of offerings has expanded with new proposals and moods, with the introduction of a completely new series of slim washbasins and a range extension of the countertop washbasins together with new colours for the finishing of the furniture in order to address an even wider audience.

One constant of the Kartell by Laufen project is the very high quality of the plastics and ceramics, and in particular of SaphirKeramik, the innovative ceramic material developed by Laufen, which has revolutionised the world of the bath due to its capacity to combine lightness, strength and slimness, thanks to an innovative formula enriched with corundum.

Kartell by Laufen continues to grow in the market, consolidating its position on an international level in the retail and contract sectors: on one side with the constant growth of the number of points of sale around the world, at this point at a total of 1000, on the other side enhancing some important architectural projects.

In the light of these experiences, Kartell by Laufen now looks to the future with a growth strategy, but above all with a plan of development to position the brand in a new dimension, with a stronger focus on interior design.

Roca at ISH 2017

Roca brings together the future and the past to its stand at ISH

1000 667 Daniel Fountain

In the year of its centenary, Roca attended the ISH fair in Frankfurt with a new concept of stand, the Roca Mall, a modern shopping centre with over 1000m2 that puts together the history, the present and the future of the brand through its different collections and products.

Beyond and Carmen. Looking towards the coming years while praising 100 years of history
With the future in mind, Roca presents an exclusive vitreous china collection for those in the search for the extra mile. Beyond is an urban proposal with sophisticated solutions for basins shaped by Roca’s new material, Fineceramic®, and the latest technologies in the design of bathroom products. On the other side, Carmen pays tribute to the past with the redesign of an iconic model from Roca’s centenary history.

The classical Carmen washbasin is coming back with a vintage style to become a new complete bathroom collection with the most advanced features such as rimless toilets.

In-Wash® and Inspira. A smart present dedicated to individualisation and user experience
The Roca Mall also displays the most successful latest launches of the company. In-Wash®, the Smart Toilet, featuring the most advanced technology with a universal design and a user friendly interface. And Inspira, the ceramic and furniture collection that provides inspiration for bathroom projects with its three design lines that allow individual configurations of the bathroom according to each user’s style.

Armani/Roca. A room for exclusivity
Exclusivity also has its room at the Roca Mall with Baia, the new Armani/Roca collection presented in premiere at ISH 2017. With these new designs, Giorgio Armani once again shows his commitment to promoting comfort and wellbeing, expressing his vision of the bathroom environment through a combination of
elements that allow maximum flexibility and adaptability. The aesthetic intentionally references the past but the retro styling is brought up to date by being interpreted in a modern manner and the incorporation of avantgarde technology. The result is a new versatile bathroom collection, which manages to be both contemporary and timeless, in accordance with Giorgio Armani’s well-known design philosophy.

About Roca
Roca is a company engaged in the design, production and commercialization of products for the bathroom space, as well as ceramic floor and wall tiles for architecture, building and interior design. Its origins date from 1917, when the Roca family started building their first production plant in Gavà (Barcelona). In the centenary of its establishment, the company employs over 22,600 workers and has 78 production plants, with presence in more than 170 markets in the five continents.

Jalu

Company Profile: Jalu – An innovative concept for outdoor lighting

1000 597 Daniel Fountain

About Jalu Ltd
New business Jalu Ltd has recently launched its first two collections of striking contemporary floor lamps – bringing a bold and original concept to the outdoor lighting market.

Inspired by outdoor living design from overseas, Alison Cavey and Juliet Kauffmann formed the company in 2016 to create a range of innovative and high quality products for the UK. The last 12 months have been spent “exploring a wide range of novel materials, production methods and designs in order to bring something fresh to the hospitality marketplace”, says Juliet.

Current options for outdoor lighting are generally quite limited and are either: functional and minimalistic (e.g. lighting for pathways, drives, and key features); or decorative (e.g. floor lamps or hanging lampshades/chandeliers).

Options to deliver ambient lighting at the same time as providing a sophisticated design feature in its own right, taking pride of place within your design scheme, whilst being truly robust and weatherproof, are limited.

Holix lamp - Jalu

The Jalu team took a long hard look at what overseas designers were doing, but came to the conclusion that there remains scope for a range of contemporary outdoor lighting to reflect the needs and aspirations of the UK market. Hence the company has developed its first two collections to provide a combination of attractive aesthetics with durability and functionality to address the vagaries of UK weather. These first collections demonstrate the versatility of product design that can be achieved, with more concepts in the pipeline.

Jalu’s original floor lamp designs provide both an object of beauty during the day and ambient light in the evening, creating an enticing atmosphere through a combination of light, shape and texture. They make a contemporary statement in any setting: foyers, garden rooms, patios, courtyards, terraces, gardens and pool sides.

Jalu Products
Jalu has worked closely with its suppliers to optimise the design and finish quality of its products. Each lamp is hand cast to order in the UK from a novel and versatile material that is lighter than stone, but highly durable. Each lamp is made to the same exacting standards, yet has its own distinct character.

The material lends itself to a wide range of colours and finishes, producing inherently beautiful and tactile lamps and provides the opportunity to create pieces that are truly unique. As a result, Jalu is looking forward to working closely with designers and clients to develop bespoke lamps that fit precisely within an individual scheme or layout.

Holix lamp - Jalu

Holix lamp – Jalu

Jalu floor lamps are available in a palette of complementary or contrasting colours and finishes, allowing clients to select the best match for a particular setting. They can be positioned to optimise visual impact as standalone features, or as multiple elements integrated within a design scheme. As freestanding units, they may be moved inside or out, to ring the changes. Supplied with integrated LED luminaires, they are also energy efficient.

The Furtho Collection
The Furtho combines simplicity of design with elegant functionality – delivering artistry to living spaces. This eye-catching floor lamp provides a striking sculptural focal point, with the inherent ability – thanks to its distinctive ‘twist’ – to present different profiles. It looks equally dramatic in both natural light and when illuminated at night.

Each Furtho lamp stands 90cm tall, and is currently available in four stand colours (pictured in Serene Blue).

The Holix Collection
The Holix is flexible and fun, putting the client in control. Its modular design, comprising multiple hexagonal elements, means it can be arranged or ‘stacked’ in a variety of configurations: with different heights (36-92cm), colour combinations (complementary or contrasting) and light patterns (regular or random).

The Holix has strong, clean lines and beautiful symmetry, and looks great when placed in clusters of different heights as a ‘family’.

Guest Blog: Kobe UK – Bring on the botanicals in 2017

1000 631 Daniel Fountain

Luxury fabric specialist, Kobe UK, predicts a ‘botanical Britannia’ for Spring/Summer 2017.

David Harris, managing director, said: “Rich, dark greens are back in fashion, with bags of opportunity to experiment with botanical patterns. Look out too, for jungle printed jacquards, woven with metallic yarns, paired with the young, modern look of natural materials, wood, cork or marble. This year it’s all about collections where each fabric has an individual identity.

“Whether it’s a modern or more traditional domestic or commercial interior, curtain and upholstery fabrics, in vibrant colours and designs are ready to take-off.”

For a stunning look which adds up to a room to remember, geometric shapes in furniture are also in style with upholstery fabric in sumptuous velvet woven in both timeless and on-trend colours. Said David: “There will be more modern shapes and colour together with textures of rich velvet, woven jacquard and cool cotton in geometric, floral, paisley and botanical designs.”

This year go for a balance between contemporary and traditional. Perfect for window décor in any hospitality venue are 100% flame retardant fabrics, in tones of metallic, gold and copper for a more luxurious style.

Kobe's Enchanted - botanicals

Making an even bigger impact in the season ahead will be room highs, the stylish, extra wide fabrics for window décor. More than 300cm high with the pattern printed or woven horizontally, these fabrics make matching patterns and sewing seams a thing of the past and create striking, seamless drape from ceiling to floor.

Whatever design and style, it’s always exciting to create something new. With Kobe’s collections there is a lavish mix of curtain and upholstery fabrics for those searching for inspiration.

Versital at Royal Quays Marina, Newcastle

A daring look for Royal Quays Marina Newcastle thanks to Versital

950 633 Daniel Fountain

Versital has been specified for new washrooms to be used by boat owners and their crew at Royal Quays Marina on the River Tyne at North Shields.

Versital supplied bespoke shower panels and splashbacks in bold and exciting colours for this striking waterside development. The new building is a stunning contemporary design which incorporates a café bar restaurant as well as the new washrooms.

Situated right on the dock edge the glazed frontage gives superb views for diners over the boats moored in the marina, whilst the interior accommodates modern new washrooms for use by marina users. Versital supplied wall panels and splashbacks in distinctive colours such as ‘Shiraz’, ‘Tangoed’, ‘Dorothy’, ‘Ice White’ and ‘Wenge’ to create 8 contemporary, spacious shower enclosures and washrooms that will serve the owners, family and crew of the 350 boats moored in the marina, as well as the many boats that visit this busy marina each year.

“Our unique surface material is 100% non-porous, making it a great solution for commercial projects such as this,” says Gemma Stockberger, Head of Marketing and Sales for Versital UK. “The Marina’s bathrooms will look as good as new for many, many years to come as no stains or exposure to water can compromise their appearance. What’s more, they will never need to grout a tile again.”

Versital’s non-porous, stone resin shower panels and splashbacks were made to measure for the Marina, allowing the design team to specify the exact shape, size. The design team picked the final colour selection from a range of 90 colours and finishes such as marble, granite, sparkle and high gloss.

BrightBlue Studio, the RIBA Registered Architects who designed the Marina Building, specified bespoke Versital shower panels to provide a low maintenance bathroom solution. Henry Amos, Director at BrightBlue Studio says, “the Royal Quays Marina team were interested in more dynamic ideas, colours and products to invigorate the spaces, allowing us to flex our creative muscles. We specified Versital as we knew they could deliver a bespoke, easy to maintain solution as well as exciting colour options and smooth, consistent delivery.”

Marmorin Sand - Viero

Product Spotlight: Marmorin Sand from Viero

1000 578 Daniel Fountain

Can you believe it’s March already? Where is 2017 going? If like us you’ve had a busy start to the year and don’t know where the time is going, we’ve got another product of the month case study to inspire your creative flair.

This month we’re showcasing one of Viero’s more traditional surface finishes. It’s Marmorin Sand, which has recently been used at a place we often rely on to get us going in the morning. Yes, you guessed it. It’s that all important coffee stop at Starbucks.

Marmorin Sand - Viero

Characteristics
This lime-based polished plaster has a spotted marble effect which allows you to achieve a natural and organic wall finish. A great word to describe the atmosphere it sets is historic.

Looking fantastic in grey, it has a fantastic shady tone but can lighten in the same breath. Marmorin Sand lends itself beautifully to projects which cover large surface areas as it blends and moves to allow the interiors around it to really come to the fore.

Marmorin Sand - Viero

Delivery
The Marmorin Sand finish was applied at the Upper St Martins Lane Starbucks Concept store, just a stone’s throw from Piccadilly Circus in London. The finish helped to create a very natural look for the client.

Design manager Alessia Bucci said: “We used the Marmorin Sand finish because it could help us to achieve a natural wall finish which would react to light and become part of the architectural shell of the building. We are delighted with the final result Viero UK has produced because the wall finish created really seems to belong to the space.”

Feel inspired to use Marmorin Sand in your next project? Email enquries@viero.co.uk to find out more.

999 584 Daniel Fountain

Enabling customer orders to be fulfilled with maximum efficiency, the Geberit Group has expanded the capacity of its logistics centre in the southern German town of Pfullendorf, investing around 40 million Euros in its storage, order picking and dispatch operation.

The honeycomb warehouse is home to 1,800 honeycombs, which are used as shelf spaces for Geberit pipes. The automatic storage and retrieval at the[CRF_Form id=’1′] facility is carried out by two storage and retrieval machines.

The significant expansion of the company’s existing logistics centre enables Geberit to continue supplying products to its customers efficiently and reliably, allowing Geberit to remain on top of the volumes resulting from the company’s growth. As part of the expansion project, a concept for the storage of pipes of up to six metres long has been implemented, with new automated storage areas now in operation. This means that the Geberit Mapress piping range can now be delivered directly from Pfullendorf.

Now spanning 60,000 square metres, the logistics centre also now includes an automated small-parts warehouse, a new high-bay warehouse, a processing area with fully automated workstations and the expansion of the shipping area.

The logistics centre is ideally situated to enable Geberit to supply products to its customers in the most economically and ecologically viable way. Goods are bundled together at the production plants and transported to Pfullendorf in trucks. Automated and co-ordinated processes there ensure that products are delivered to customers in a consolidated fashion, on schedule and with a high level of reliability.

Brintons introduces art-inspired ‘Altered Gravity’ collection by Stacey Garcia

Brintons to exhibit latest High Definition Weave collections at BCFA Open event

650 320 Daniel Fountain

Brintons is delighted to announce it will be exhibiting its latest High Definition Weave collections at the BCFA Open, Spring Design event to take place over two days (28 – 29th March) at the Old Truman Brewery, in Shoreditch, London.

Brintons will showcase two bold graphic designs woven in its 32-colour High Definition Weave, a unique Brintons’ innovation created for the contract market that allows for infinite design possibilities and highly dynamic visuals.

An art inspired design from the Altered Gravity collection created by Stacy Garcia will be presented as a wall-hanging extending to the floor alongside a pixel-enthused design from the Zuzunaga collection by artist-designer Christian Zuzunaga. These two designs showcase the creative possibilities and extended colour combinations allowed by Brintons’ HD Weave technology.

Altered Gravity collection by Stacy Garcia
Altered Gravity is the eighth collaborative collection between Brintons and Stacy Garcia. The range includes 14 patterns and draws inspiration from diverse periods in the history of modern art; abstract expressionism collides with contemporary graphic design and digitally rendered textures melt between layers of mixed media paintings. The exhibited design from the collection presents graphic hexagonal strokes in varying blue hues.

Stacy Garcia comments on the collections influence: “Altered Gravity is about exploring the boundaries of experimental design techniques and mediums. We’re bringing it back to the basics of fine art and melding it with new technologies.”

Zuzunaga Collection by Christian Zuzunaga
Christian Zuzunaga’s design was inspired by his exploration of Brintons unique and extensive design archive in Kidderminster. Visiting the archive, Christian was inspired by the contemporary relevance of the antique fabrics and captivated by their similarities to his own design principals.

The bold, colourful squares and pixel-based designs evident in weaving and wool dying, dating back centuries, inspired the mandala styling and repeating symmetrical motifs of this collection. The exhibited design will display an array of bright hues delivered in a repetitive square motif expressing the vast possibilities of combining soft mediums with digital techniques.

Boutique Chic
Harlequin Momentum is an eclectic mix of design styles, which have been inspired both by architecture and by abstract interpretations of natural forms. It combines elements of matt and shine, texture and tone. The weaves and wallcoverings represent a diverse mix of qualities and techniques: conceptual; geometric; painterly; multi-directional, light-reflecting embroideries; even appliquéd laser-cut circles.

They work together effortlessly to create a cohesive and achingly chic whole. Successfully capturing the essence of the most sophisticated international boutique hotels, Momentum translates this allure into a tangible, accessible collection of products for everyday living.

Style Library - Trends in design 2017
Claire Vallis, Design Director, expands: “This launch really encapsulates the cosmopolitan spirit of sleek, boutique hotels and glamorous townhouses, whilst still retaining its approachability. Targeted at both the domestic and the contract markets, the fabrics and wallcoverings exude an architectural, structural feel, but in an accessible, understandable way.”

The compelling colour palette enhances the designs, mixing organic shades and fashion hues: oyster and pearl; slate and chalk; mineral and zest; jet and crystal; pearl and paprika; rose gold and flint; sepia and teal; peacock; rose quartz; antique rose, blush, dove, moonlight, porcelain; jute; domino and emerald.

Natural Spirit
Scion is the essence of the ‘good life’ vibe – forests, fresh air, fjords, food, freedom and fun – are all encapsulated in the latest collection, Noukku. Named after a species of Finnish wildflower, Noukku is totally in tune with the life-affirming ‘Hygge’ trend: it’s a versatile, spontaneous collection that invigorates your senses and encourages you to step away from your busy lifestyle. Scion Designer Hannah Bowen explains how Noukku evolved, “Noukku is brought to life through an invigorating colour palette and use of textured effects inspired by natural elements. I wanted to create versatile and spontaneous designs which invigorate your senses and encourage you to step away from your busy lifestyle, an ideal backdrop to escaping away to a contemporary hotel.”

Style Library - Trends in design 2017Artistry
Zoffany’s beautifully curated compendium of show-stopping prints, weaves and embroideries crafted through a mixture of yarns and techniques, for the creation of inspirationally luxurious and unique interiors. The new Boleyn collection captures the faded elegance of time worn fabrics and wallpapers, each with their own captivating story to tell. It is the skilful reinterpretation of these heirlooms and the dramatic harnessing of nature in abstracted form that elevates the collection to poised perfection.

Style Library - Trends in design 2017

The rich moody greens of ‘Moss’ and ‘Khaki’ are punctuated with shots of ‘Greenstone’. ‘Faded Amethyst’, ‘Hollyhocks’ and ‘Sunstone’ add warmth. Soft mineral colours are offset against the jewel tone highlights of ‘Amber’, ‘Tigers Eye’, ‘Cinnabar’ and ‘Koi’ adding jewel tone highlights. Peter Gomez, Zoffany Head of Design explains: “Our aim is to create unique interiors with artistry, sophistication and integrity. We love to utilise our extensive archive for inspiration, each yarn, each brush stroke, each process is meticulously considered during the design process”.

Viero's work with Henry Van Der Vijver

Client Spotlight: Viero’s work with Henry Van Der Vijver

999 647 Daniel Fountain

The lifeblood of any successful business is good quality clients. Viero UK is fortunate to have many.

During our time in the industry, we have partnered with some of the most fantastic creatives in the world of surface designs. To celebrate our collaborative approach to business, we have launched a new feature to introduce our loyal clients and to explain how our work intertwines.

To kick it off, we spoke to Henry Van Der Vijver who is renowned within the industry for his quality work and great experience in the surface finish industry…

Viero: Tell us a bit more about your business…
Henry Van Der Vijver
: I’m the managing director of HVART Ltd, a specialist decorator and master craftsman with 30 years’ experience in the trade. I have a classic grounding and training in decorative finishes, so as a surface designer my finishes last. I now run a small friendly team of London-based artisans and we only use the best products that give our designs longevity. We work closely with London’s design and architecture studios to create bespoke finishes for their projects. People know where to find me and know that my name equals quality. I have great clients, a super team and I like to trade with a smile.

V: What projects are you working on at the moment?
HVDV:
We have just been working a new project in the clubhouse of one of the world’s most famous golf courses. We completed the main project back in 2002 and were invited back to create more designs as the initial project work still looks like the day we finished them. We have an ongoing commission at the back of Oxford Street where we’re hand painting fireplaces in a penthouse to look like the client’s favourite marble. We like to travel too and will soon be going back to a project in Montenegro to paint another exciting ceiling mural. And back in London, we’re performing lacquer wall finishes for a new trendy hotel project in central London as well as commissions for ride crews for Cunard’s cruise liners.

V: How did you first start working with Viero UK?
HVDV:
I first met Viero UK at a Decorex exhibition. I liked the look of the products and thought that the director Chris was incredibly charming. There used to be a word called chivalry which is nowadays lost, but Chris is very chivalrous and is a true gentleman. We hit it off straight away and have been working together ever since. We work on the kind of projects of which Viero products suit beautifully. There is some super new looks that have been created with these products like the bathroom suites we finished in Hydro and the lovely soft grain of the Marmorin, so HVART and Viero make for a great pairing.

V: What do you like about working with Viero UK?
HVDV:
The products are very malleable and user-friendly. I like the availability, the fact that the team will deliver it wherever I need it to go and I think it’s branded beautifully. Chris and team are always on hand to answer any questions, so all round it’s a great product from a smashing team.

V: What does the future hold? How are you working to stay ahead of the game?
HVDV:
Our industry is greatly driven by fashion, although I’m grounded in the classics. I can walk into most interiors and identify the date by the surface finishes. It’s all about re-inventing. A very famous artist friend of mine once said to me: “It’s all been done before Henry, buts it’s all about how we will do it today.” If you’re constantly talking to all of your peers and keeping an eye on social media, you can stay fresh in the game. I’ve never seen such a fabulous tool as Instagram for our trade and we are so lucky nowadays to have such wonderful reference tools like this and Pinterest.

Versital at Chaophraya

Versital specified in Chaophraya transformation

900 600 Daniel Fountain

Hotel Designs client Versital is delighted to have been specified in Chaophraya, a contemporary Thai restaurant in Newcastle.

The restaurant has recently undergone a £1.55 million transformation that offers an impressive blend of contemporary Thai cuisine in unique surroundings. Versital supplied a stunning 3m feature worktop and panels for the bar to meet the brief of ‘classic elegance’.

Chaophraya Business Manager, Simon Wright says: “While it is indeed delicious, Thai food can be messy and therefore prone to staining. We needed a practical solution for our new restaurant that would project an opulent and authentic look, while still being fit for purpose and keep looking as good as new for a long time. Versital’s bespoke faux marble means we now have the best of both worlds for our restaurant – a beautiful, premium marble bar and ‘pass’, without the drawbacks of the naturally porous material.”

Versital’s 100% non-porous stone resin panels, bar tops and table tops are made to measure allowing you to specify the exact shape and size required. They are available in over 90 colours and finishes such as marble, granite, sparkle and high gloss. “There are so many benefits of opting for cultured marble within the hospitality environment,” says Gemma Stockberger, Head or Marketing and Sales for Versital UK

“Not only is it stain proof, non-porous and easy to clean, it can also designed to a completely bespoke dimensions, shapes and sizes. Faux marble has been known to last for more than 30 years in the restaurant environment. We are delighted with the final result for Chaophraya.”

“Versital provided a brilliant service throughout the project,” says Dan Lewis, Project Manager at Medlock and installation manager for this project. “From inception, design, procurement, right through to the construction phase; they supported the project team in ensuring delivery of a brilliant product from across various bespoke joinery items such as the bar/ kitchen pass & waiters stations.”

The perfect synergy of its four brand values – Quality, Technology, Design and Sustainability – continues to drive the success of GROHE. These four values are deeply rooted in the company’s German history. Even today, as a global company, GROHE continues to rely on its German operations’ experience, capacity to innovate and workmanship.

The group’s entire product development resources are based in Germany, where the R&D centre in Hemer remains the driving force.

AquaSymphony is one of the latest products to proudly bear the “Made in Germany” badge as an embodiment of GROHE’s commitment to quality. This luxury shower delivers a holistic water experience for all the senses while at the same time raising the bar for modern bathroom design. Developed in Germany and incorporating numerous innovative technologies, AquaSymphony uses water, light, sound and steam to create a personalised, luxurious spa. AquaSymphony by GROHE

Certified quality, guaranteed reliability
GROHE’s “Made in Germany” badge is a synonym for longevity and reliability, as well as excellent engineering and bold innovation. It is underpinned by an uncompromising commitment to outstanding workmanship and impeccable functionality. The group’s German operations continue to set the standards of quality for all GROHE manufacturing sites worldwide. All factories are health and safety certified to OHSAS 18001; their quality management and environmental management systems are certified to ISO 9001 and ISA 1400, respectively. In addition, GROHE has successfully established an energy management system to ISO 50001. The group’s quality assurance efforts are underpinned by the highly stringent trials and tests conducted at the GROHE Lifetest Lab in Lahr. This is where experienced employees test the products for compliance with various national and regional requirements as well as attainment of the company’s own internal standards of quality and longevity. Importantly, GROHE products not only meet all international norms, standards and regulations but exceed them in many cases.

Technologies which add value to our lives and help preserve natural resources
GROHE is acknowledged as a technology leader around the world and its German sites remain the driving force behind its innovation efforts. To ensure things stay that way, GROHE continues to invest in its German locations. GROHE design: unique and distinctive
The multiple award winning designs for all products come courtesy of the in-house GROHE Design Studio based at the GROHE head office in Düsseldorf. Here, products are created which can be used intuitively and last for many years. GROHE products have consistently been among the winners of international design competitions such as the red dot product design award, the iF Design Award and the Good Design Award. GROHE has accumulated some 270 internationally renowned design awards since 2003 and the GROHE Design Team was named red dot: design team of the year 2011/2012.

Accolade for sustainability commitment
GROHE is passionate about sustainability and has firmly embedded this commitment in its day-to-day operations. For several decades, management has encouraged employees to develop and make water and energy-efficient products which enable users to exercise responsibility for the environment without compromising on the quality of their own water experience. The company’s holistic 360-degree approach to sustainability embraces its employees, suppliers, factories, processes as well as its corporate citizenship.

The latter is exemplified by the GROHE Dual Tech programme. GROHE - future-proofing bathrooms

Guest Blog: GROHE provides five solutions for future-proofing the bathroom

583 425 Guest Blog

Many people planning a bathroom today want to take their future needs and requirements into account without compromising on contemporary, stylish design.

Driven by demographic change, demand for “multi-generational bathrooms” continues to increase. According to a government report “Future of an Ageing Population”, the UK population is ageing and nearly one in seven people is projected to be aged over 75 by 2040*. GROHE experts have long acknowledged these trends and have developed five attractive solutions to meet the growing need. These can be found in the brand’s newly released SMART COMFORT – Plan for Tomorrow Today brochure.

“Our ‘SMART COMFORT’ concept embraces a number of different approaches to helping older and physically impaired people live independently in their own homes for as long as possible”, says Andrea Bußmann, Regional Vice President Europe at Grohe AG. “An important contribution to this objective is delivered by specifically designed and engineered products combining elevated levels of comfort, ergonomics, user safety and longevity. A sensible room layout and a forward-looking choice of decor are equally instrumental in maximising the user-friendliness of what remains the most private room of any home.”

GROHE - future-proofing bathrooms

One solution for all members of the household: the SMART COMFORT Plus Bathroom
The SMART COMFORT Plus Bathroom was devised by GROHE experts specifically for households where there is only a single member with restricted mobility. Additional areas and fittings are provided to cater for these special needs. These include a wheelchair accessible basin as well as grab bars in the toilet area. Users with unrestricted mobility are provided with dual wash basins and a bathtub, complemented by taps from the GROHE Allure F-digital series offering elegant design and intuitive operation from any area within the bathroom. For added user safety, a GROHE Allure thermostat keeps the shower water temperature constant at the chosen level, reliably protecting against scalding. A GROHE Sensia® IGS shower toilet maximises comfort for all users thanks to its gentle cleansing action, using nothing but water and warm air.

GROHE - future-proofing bathrooms

Accommodating evolving needs: The SMART COMFORT Design Bathroom
The SMART COMFORT Design Bathroom demonstrates how a remodelling project can be easily and discreetly designed to meet future needs. The room layout should avoid narrow access ways, provide sufficient turning space for wheelchairs and walkers, while placing basins and WCs in easily accessible spots. In this concept, the low-profile basin is mounted on a wheelchair accessible timber panel and complemented by a stylish Essence tap, with an easy to use lever incorporating GROHE SilkMove® technology. The GROHE Rainshower® SmartControl takes the idea of comfortable showering to the next level, with three combined push-and-turn knobs giving users intuitive control of water flow, water temperature and spray pattern. The GROHE Sensia® Arena shower toilet is again used here, with its natural, water-only cleansing function and its wide array of customisable functions. The toilet uses advanced technologies to minimise maintenance and cleaning, offering a perfect combination of thorough body care, ultimate hygiene and personalised comfort.

GROHE - future-proofing bathrooms

Comfort without barriers: The SMART COMFORT Budget Bathroom
The SMART COMFORT Budget concept has been designed to demonstrate how a future proof and easy access bathroom can be created even where space is at a premium and/or budgets are limited. The layout places elements such as the wash basin in positions where they are easily accessible and can be used by all members of the household. A single-lever mixer with tall spout from the Eurostyle range leaves maximum space above the basin for hand washing, while its ergonomically shaped lever ensures easier operation for people with impaired motor skills. Style-matched accessories from the GROHE Essentials collection give the bathroom a coordinated and sleek look, and a seat near the shower area provides users with a space to relax. The toilet bowl is mounted at a comfortable height of 45 centimetres using the Rapid SL installation system, and is suitable for the possibility of retrofitting grab rails.

GROHE - future-proofing bathrooms

Enhanced quality of life for later years: The SMART COMFORT Care Bathroom
The SMART COMFORT Care Bathroom is designed to meet the specific needs of residents in retirement homes. Apart from safety and ergonomics for bathroom users, crucial factors in this segment include economic factors such as the cost of construction and equipment, as well as ongoing operational costs. In addition, it is important to take into account all statutory norms and standards, as well as insights from practical experience, at the early planning stages.

GROHE offers a wide variety of special water fittings for the healthcare and care sector. One example is the Grohtherm 2000 Special shower thermostat featuring easy to read dials and self-explanatory symbols. The basin tap chosen for this example is the tall-spout “L” version of the Eurostyle C single-lever mixer, however an alternative would be the Euroeco Special tap with its ergonomically shaped handle to ensure easy operation. Offering a variety of different spout heights and lengths, GROHE enables planners to specify the perfect tap for any basin, resulting in minimised splashing and preventing the spread of bacteria from the drain. For the toilet, a Tectron Skate unit combining infrared and push-button actuation provides flushing options for users of all abilities.

GROHE - future-proofing bathrooms

Unrestricted mobility away from home: The SMART COMFORT Hotel Bathroom
The SMART COMFORT Hotel Bathroom concept explores what a barrier-free or low- barrier bathroom for hotel guests can look like. Apart from creating a welcoming ambiance, it is important to specify water fittings which can be operated intuitively. This example shows an open en-suite bathroom with complementing decor to the overall style of the room. The bathroom is accessible from several sides and also for guests with impairments. The modern decor is complemented by a Eurostyle tap with tall spout and ergonomic lever. The shower is fitted with a Grohtherm 1000 thermostat which balances fluctuations in water temperature and pressure. The subtly illuminated Nova Cosmopolitan Light flush plate provides a gentle night light so there is no need to turn on harsh overhead lighting. The plate also offers a choice between two different flushing volumes, helping to promote water efficiency.

Duravit Desginer BIM

Digital construction with Duravit Designer bathroom projects now available on BIMobject®

1000 548 Daniel Fountain

Programme and modularise an entire building? In the future, this will be common practice as digital construction is one of the most important developments in the industry.

“Building information modelling” (BIM) is a method with tremendous potential: comprehensive databases of information enable the planning, construction and operation of a building, both in the digital and real world. BIM can also be used by companies working in the sanitary, heating and air-conditioning sector.

Duravit is now expanding its BIM data portfolio (so-called Revit files) and has joined the BIMobject® global network. On the BIMobject® website and on its own professional portal pro.duravit.co.uk, Duravit offers all the necessary BIM files to download for architects, planners and the sanitary, heating and air-conditioning trade. Joining BIMobject® has enabled the designer bathroom manufacturer to hugely expand its offering. And this is set to continue: “In the next few years, the BIM file portfolio is to be expanded continuously”, says Albrecht von der Groeben, Chief of International Sales, Duravit AG.

Duravit Desginer BIM

Quality assurance and transparency
Digital planning that also includes the construction and operation of the building project enables exact and more comprehensive quality assurance. This should lead to greater transparency in the construction phase and, later, to lower operating and maintenance costs. So-called integral planning based on the BIM method is already required for public projects in the USA, UK and Spain.

As providing the best possible support for all kinds of bathroom planning is part of the Duravit commitment to its customers, the designer bathroom manufacturer is now making more than 150 BIM files available on its own professional portal pro.duravit.co.uk and on the BIMobject® network. For years, Duravit, one of the first manufacturers in the sanitary sector to do so, has been offering a huge portfolio of planning data (dxf, dwg) and now also BIM files to download from pro.duravit.co.uk.

Duravit Desginer BIM

Three-dimensional product visualisation
The BIM method enables the presentation of Duravit products in various degrees of detail. In addition to the graphic and planning possibilities, the file also contains product information, such as the name, article number and dimensions. Thanks to 2D and 3D visualisations of the products, the files permit precise design and modelling of the bathroom in building projects.

The provision of this large volume of BIM files on pro.duravit.co.uk and BIMobject® expands the Duravit service offering and enables optimum bathroom design and realization – even in complex bathroom projects. With this step, the designer bathroom manufacturer is promoting the development of integral planning in the modern construction industry. At the same time, the company is consolidating its position as a reliable partner for architects and property developers and this is reflected in numerous international projects. These include hotels, such as the Alpina Gstaad, large-scale projects, such as the Burj Khalifa, The Opus by Zaha Hadid or public buildings, such as the new Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Duravit’s international project management covers more than 130 countries and offers professional support in project planning and implementation.

50 fine years – Viero celebrates half-a-century

650 486 Daniel Fountain

Tradition and innovation is something that Viero prides itself on when it comes to developing new products for the surface finishes industry.

This ethos of work is particularly relevant this year as Viero celebrates its 50-year anniversary. As a business, we are looking to appreciate and celebrate this milestone while looking ahead to another half century as market leaders.

Director Chris Walters said: “As well as our fine range of products, a great appeal of Viero to our customers is our illustrious history.

“As a company, we have developed a strong reputation for the work we do within the industry. “It is important to mark and celebrate these milestone moments.”

Rich history
A lot has changed since Viero’s launch in 1967. This was the year Pacifico Viero and Duilio Isabella set up the business in the Italian province of Novara. It was here that Viero started the production of its textured wall coatings and paints.

Growth has been a core success of the business over the past 50 years. So much so, that today the company has expanded its business operations into 50 countries with almost 200 partners worldwide. This network allows us to assist architects, interior designers and developers on their projects throughout the world.

To mark our special birthday, we have launched its very own competition to celebrate. Click here to find out more about this anniversary competition.

Ethereal - Wilton Carpets

Product Spotlight: Make waves with Wilton’s Ethereal collection

998 592 Daniel Fountain

“We set out to make this new collection our first focused solely on inspirational design and the result doesn’t disappoint,” says Damian Roscoe, head of creative, on the latest collection from Wilton Carpets. “Inspired by a natural aesthetic with an emphasis on textures and layers, Ethereal delights in the beauty of decay on a backdrop of classically beautiful pattern,” he adds.

With worn Persian effects, deconstructed and broken patterns and tattered, layered florals; Ethereal is certainly a collection of the moment. Capturing an aesthetic that is both intimate and beautiful, it is the first in the new Designer Collection series from Wilton Carpets. A personal expression of Damian’s craft, Ethereal represents an exciting step for Wilton Carpets.

James Sprint, CEO of Wilton Carpets, comments: “Clearly inspirational, this new collection is the first to truly show the creativity of our designers without the usual practical limitations, such as designing for a particular location, and the results are astounding. With Ethereal, we are truly embracing our status as a design-focused carpet manufacturer. It is a range that marks our intention to become famed for carpet design at the top of its game.”

Designed and made in Britain, each Ethereal carpet is crafted in a high-quality 80/20 wool blend and can be specified in any quality. With the ability to adapt any of the seven woven axminster designs in a colourway suited to your interior, this is a collection that offers huge potential for designers looking to strike out with statement carpet.

Geberit teams with the Sleep Geek to uncover secrets to a good night’s rest

957 547 Daniel Fountain

Hotel Designs partners Geberit have teamed up with The Sleep Geek as part of a national campaign.

Central to the campaign was a radio broadcast with independent sleep practitioner, educator and environment analyst James Wilson, aka the Sleep Geek. During the radio interviews, which aired on 33 stations around the country to more than four million listeners, the Sleep Geek used results of a Geberit survey into people’s sleeping habits to offer tips on reducing night time disturbance.

The research revealed that 90% of Brits wake at least once a night, with 1 in 10 people waking five times or more. The number one reason for waking is to use the toilet, with 80% of people struggling to get back to sleep following a visit to the bathroom. During the radio interviews, the Sleep Geek explained how the bathroom environment can have an impact on people’s ability to get back to sleep after going to the toilet.

Sleep practioner James Wilson - aka the 'Sleep Geek'

Sleep practioner James Wilson – aka the ‘Sleep Geek’

He said: “Turning the bathroom light on to navigate your way to the toilet sends a message to the brain that it’s time to wake up. This corresponds with the research which revealed that 40% of people turn on the light when they wake to go to the toilet. Add to this the shock of sitting on a cold toilet seat and it becomes clear that we don’t stand much chance of keeping our brains in sleep mode.”

The campaign incorporated online resources, including a dedicated landing page on the Geberit AquaClean website. Here, consumers could hear more from the Sleep Geek, and learn more about the benefits of Geberit AquaClean Mera and Geberit Monolith Plus. Both products feature an orientation light while the Geberit AquaClean Mera also has a heated seat and a super quiet flush to ensure disturbance is minimised.

The Geberit Sleep campaign also attracted a large audience on social media channels, including a Facebook competition to win a luxury sleep hamper.

“Using a number of very effective marketing tools, including radio and online, the campaign highlighted how the bathroom can be designed as a night time environment to help reduce disruption to sleep patterns,” commented Raffaela De Vittorio, Marketing and Brands Director, for Geberit. “While we can’t guarantee a good night’s sleep, products such as Geberit AquaClean Mera and Geberit Monolith Plus offer ways to make the bathroom environment as comfortable and relaxing as possible, even in the middle of the night.”

Viero - blue colour scheme for 2017

Viero Guest Blog: Feeling blue – 2017 colour schemes

496 386 Guest Blog

As we give the warmest of welcomes to 2017 in the Viero UK office, it’s a fitting time to take a look at what’s likely to be trending during the upcoming year.

A new year often means new trends and, in the world of interior design, colour plays a huge part in how we tackle our projects.

While we always tell our clients that natural intuition is the most powerful tool when choosing your colour scheme, that doesn’t mean we can’t give you a little helping hand when it comes to this very personal selection process.

This year, we believe it’s time to take a bolder and more confident approach to tackling the dreaded colour palette dilemma.

We know that grey will continue to be as popular as ever. We completed more grey-shaded projects than any other last year and it’s hardly a surprise when you consider that its almost unrivalled versatility makes it a natural choice for any contemporary design brief.

But we’re asking our creative clients whether it might be time look at deeper, warmer greys or even use lighter greys as a great backdrop to introduce other bolder colours into their projects. And that’s exactly why we’re ‘feeling blue’ at the start of 2017. So much so, we believe deep ocean blue shades could well be the emerging colour of choice in the year ahead.

Our interior design partners can’t speak highly enough of the qualities these deep blue tones bring to the surfaces of both residential and commercial spaces. It brings great strength, coolness and warmth in equal measure and creates a peaceful environment due to its natural links.

Blue works well across large spaces which benefit from high ceilings and long corridors as well as bold feature walls. So watch this space as blue gets set to take centre stage as 2017 moves along.

Bernardis - Cemento by Viero

Product Spotlight: Cemento from Viero

800 532 Daniel Fountain

If your interior design style is all about feeling the forces of nature, you won’t be disappointed with the décor at popular Italian restaurant Bernardi’s in the London’s West End.

Thanks to Viero UK’s Italian wall finish product called Cemento, the restaurant’s renovation project has been earning rave reviews. Specified for the project by interior and architecture design studio Coote & Bernardi, the Marble Arch eatery is well worth a visit.

Founder Gabriel Bernardi said: “Cemento has an earthy feel to compliment the Italian vibe we wanted to encompass – we really wanted to bring the outdoors in.
“Since completing the project, there is this wonderful relief on the walls – it’s this added attention to detail that we wanted to incorporate as opposed to flat painted walls. The end product is absolutely stunning – we still receive regular compliments on how atmospheric the dining area is – we couldn’t have asked for a better result.”

Bernardis - Cemento by Viero

Cemento is one of many of Viero UK’s specialist surface finishes designed to give a textured and characterful ambience.

This particular decorative plaster is pre-blended at Viero’s Italian laboratory made of water dispersible acrylic resin, micronized inert charges, light stable pigments and specific additives. It is recommended for fine decoration of interior walls where a concrete effect is desired, giving our clients an authentic look.

The rugged textures that are achieved with the application of this product bring a touch of the outdoor elements to an interior project. It’s perfect for capturing a natural theme.

James Hudson - Gallery Direct

Dual role for James Hudson at Gallery Direct

777 498 Daniel Fountain

Gallery Direct recently appointed James Hudson as their Sales Director, alongside his role as Business Development Director for Furniture.

James commented: “I’m thrilled to be given the position of Sales Director, but delighted that I can also retain my role putting together our furniture collections which I love. Furniture has been a key part of my life for so long, it’s great that I can still utilise my design skills and knowledge.

“The combination of the two jobs will keep me busy (and the title is rather long, Sales and Business Development Director), but I’m always up for a challenge, and with my enthusiasm, experience and work ethic, I’m confident that I can balance the two roles and deliver the results required for both.”

So far things have gone well. Gallery’s new furniture collections were extremely well received at the January Furniture Show, and his sales team exceeded their sales target for January.

Duravit illuminated mirror range

Product Spotlight: Duravit designs a modular illuminated mirror collection

525 350 Daniel Fountain

Lights on! With its new illuminated mirror elements, designer bathroom manufacturer Duravit presents individual light sources for every bathroom.

The right light ensures the ideal illumination of both the room and the user. With immediate effect, Duravit has launched the “Light and Mirrors” product series, a new, modular range of illuminated mirrors that meets a host of requirements in terms of comfort and practicality. The light profile, switch system, size and mirror heating can be individually selected to meet personal needs. The entire mirror portfolio is compatible with all Duravit products and provides impressive value.

Duravit illuminated mirror range

There are three different light profiles to choose from: ambient light on all four sides, an illuminated area at the top edge of the mirror or two areas at the sides for optimum lighting scenarios. State-of-the-art LED technology with ambient lighting along all four sides creates a so called wall-wash effect: four homogeneous light sources are attached to the back for uniform illumination of the wall surrounding the mirror. This indirect light produces an atmospheric effect.

Duravit illuminated mirror range

LEDs are also used in the two models with illumination at the sides. Here, however, a special profile deflects the light onto the matt lighting areas. This creates a homogeneous and rimless light source for optimum illumination of the user.

Duravit illuminated mirror range

‘Good’ – ‘Better’ – ‘Best’
All three light profiles are available in several design variants. For the ‘Good’ version, Duravit offers a classic wall-mounted switch. Alternatively, for the ‘Better’ variant, they can be supplied with a sensor switch on the lower edge of the mirror. The sensor switch, ambient light at the lower edge for washing-area illumination, and mirror heating offer maximum comfort in the ultimate ‘Best’ mirror. The heating of the mirror surface prevents it from misting and ensures a clear view. The new Duravit mirrors are available in four widths from 60 cm to 120 cm. The basic mirror, developed especially for small bathrooms, is 40-cm wide and available exclusively with a wall-mounted switch.

This variety of options offers great scope for design lovers, while still offering a very attractive price category.

Andaz Hotel Bathroom featuring a Versital bespoke shower tray

Project Spotlight: Versital bathroom renovation – Andaz Liverpool Street

750 611 Daniel Fountain

Versital is delighted to have been specified by the Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel in London for the second stage of its bathroom renovations.

Versital supplied 40 bespoke shower trays for the first phase of refurbishments completed in November 2016. The second stage will start in February 2017 and will see Versital supply an additional 200 bespoke shower trays over the course of a year.

“We specified Versital shower trays as we needed a solution that was completely bespoke and could meet the requirements of the current waste disposal positioning in the rooms; allowing us to renovate them with minimal disruption to the integral design. The bespoke shower trays are an unusual shape and fit a space that was once occupied by a bath. Our guests love the new bathrooms and in 2017 we will renovate 200 more,” says Keith Large, Director of Engineering at the Andaz London Liverpool Street hotel.

Gemma Stockberger - Versital

Versital stone resin shower trays are made to measure, allowing you to specify the shape, size and position of the waste outlet. They are available in 90 colours and finishes such as marble, granite, sparkle and high gloss.

Gemma Stockberger, Head of Marketing and Sales at Versital says: “January has brought with it an excellent start to business in 2017. We are delighted to be able to offer a bespoke solution to the Andaz on such a large scale. This year we have several more big projects in the pipeline, as well as two recent accolades to celebrate – a Mixology commendation for our surfaces in December and a Best of Houzz award in January.”

An Andaz bathroom featuring a Versital shower tray from the first phase of refurbishments.

The Andaz Liverpool Street is a luxury, boutique hotel near Shoreditch. It features 267 contemporary guest rooms and suites.

“For many guests, the bathroom experience is one of the most anticipated elements of their stay at the Andaz,” says Keith Large, Director of Engineering at the Andaz London Liverpool Street hotel. “It becomes a sanctuary for them to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of central London. However, in recent years we have learnt from guests that time constraints, busy schedules and personal preferences mean they favour a rejuvenating, hot shower over a long, relaxing bath.

Travertine - Viero

Product Spotlight: Travertine from Viero

1024 572 Daniel Fountain

Viero are helping their readers to get a better understanding of their UK product range this year by taking an in-depth look at one of their specialist finishes in a newly launched ‘product of the month’ feature.

To kick off the feature, we’re taking a look at Travetine and its specification in a Covent Garden restaurant.

Characteristics
This decorative wall coating plaster can be used for interiors and exteriors and can achieve a wide range of shadow effects. Due to the natural composition of this product, the final colour will depend on the weather conditions and absorption of the plaster.

Travertine - Viero

Travertine is based on lime putty, natural colouring earths, marble sands and grains. These are additives which improve the characteristics of the product and its gripping properties, without altering the breathability of the finishing.

For the best results, it should be applied to interior wall surfaces that are safe and sound with no humidity. And for external surfaces, it’s important to ensure they are well prepared, protected and without rising dampness.

Travertine - Viero

Delivery
Travertine’s textured finish is central to its ability to create a rustic and traditional feel for any design project. Architect Alessio Nardi specified this finish for a design project at Mamie’s creperie and cider bar in the bustling Covent Garden, London.

He said: “Mamie’s is a French restaurant specialising in galettes and crepes with both the food menu and the interiors attempting to bridge the link between Britain and Brittany.

Travertine - Viero

“Travertine was our surface finish of choice for the project as it’s reminiscent of Southern Europe coastal architecture facades and gives a nice texture to the wall, especially in the evening when the lights are on. I also especially liked the tactility of it, the roughness that reminds of natural elements like rocks and stones.”

Viero UK loves the effects that can be achieved with Travertine and has identified restaurants as its perfect habitat. Its handmade and bespoke look and feel is great for creating an environment packed with character. The finish also looks great in a combined panel pattern next to a polished plaster finish, which could lend itself to a swimming pool environment.

Jeremy Quantrill - Dernier & Hamlyn

COMPANY PROFILE: Dernier & Hamlyn

999 582 Daniel Fountain

In this day and age of mass production and mass consumption, it is always a satisfying to find good craftsmanship, skilled work and years of experience combining – something Hotel Designs had the pleasure of witnessing during a recent tour of Dernier & Hamlyn’s factory in Croydon.

To look from the outside, you would be hard-pressed to remember that the company has been producing lighting of the highest quality for nearly 130 years and its pieces have featured in some of the most prestigious hospitality projects in that time. But once inside, that becomes very quickly evident.

The small but close-knot and highly-experienced team, led by joint managing director Brian Spiking, are a hive of activity when I arrive – and I’m soon shown around getting a glimpse of some of the pieces they are working on and a privileged insight into the projects in which they will feature. Whilst walking around, Brian emphasises the blend of traditional methods of production and modern technologies – some of which are unique to the company; something designers like most about working with Dernier & Hamlyn – finely-tuned expertise and a rich heritage.

Dernier & Hamlyn

It’s the same with the design proposals front-of-house, too. I’m shown through the archives, with beautifully hand-drawn and hand-painted folios of designs of old; an extremely time-consuming and painstaking process if needed to be changed later on during a project. Today, some technical drawings are still produced by hand, but it’s combined with computer-aided-design, which creates a more complete vision for clients. Casting of prototypes with 3D printing – rather than the traditional method of wood and brass casting – has also streamlined Dernier & Hamlyn’s offering.

This is a small but supremely efficient and successful operation, something evidenced by the numerous high-end hotels utilising Dernier & Hamlyn pieces around the world. Hotel Designs caught up with joint-managing director Jeremy Quantrill for a deeper insight into this unique company…

——-

Hotel Designs: Could you give us a bit of history about Dernier & Hamlyn as a company and then your own background and your involvement with them?
Jeremy Quantrill: Dernier & Hamlyn has been a major player in the decorative lighting industry since the company was founded by Louis Dernier in 1888. We’ve always been London-based starting out by importing silks from France and China to make high quality hand decorated lampshades. By 1913 our customers included Liberty and our catalogue included more than 700 different lampshades and fittings, a truly vast product range for the time. During the First World War Lloyd-George’s Government placed orders with small companies across the UK to use their skills in new ways, which for us this meant manufacturing aircraft parts. After the war and throughout the 1920s the company continued to grow and in 1931 following various incarnations changed its name to Dernier & Hamlyn to reflect its new ownership.

In 2000, the same year as a management buyout, Dernier & Hamlyn was awarded the Royal Warrant to supply HM The Queen, which it still holds with pride. In 2001 the factory was moved to Croydon where it remains as one of the few UK companies actually designing and producing chandeliers, wall lights, lanterns, table lamps and other unique lighting products in its own premises. I run the company with Brian [Spiking]. I look after business development while he takes care of manufacturing and technical operations. Together we have worked for D&H for almost 70 years. However, we’re by no means unique, several of our people have been here for more than 30 which must say something about how much they enjoy their work!

HD: How important is the ‘bespoke’ element to what Dernier & Hamlyn do?
JQ: It runs through everything we do. We simply don’t produce off the shelf lighting. Each project has unique elements in the way it is designed, manufactured and installed. That’s what makes it such an interesting company to work for.

HD: Given D&H’s proud ‘made in Britain’ ethos, right now do you think there are enough companies doing this? Or indeed enough designers utilising companies that do?
JQ: I’m sorry to say no on both counts. While it can be cheaper to produce lighting overseas the quality is nowhere near as high as from British companies like D&H. Unfortunately, there is widespread misconceptions about the costs involved with bespoke lighting. Because our people have worked in the industry for so long it’s rare that they cannot find a solution to designers’ requirements that gives the look they want within their budget. They just need to talk to us and it’s amazing how innovative our guys can be with finishing techniques, lamping options and so on.

There is also a problem with companies which purport to “make in Britain” when actually all they do is import parts and fix them together here. That is not only misleading it is also unfair on companies which actually do what they say they do.

HD: How do the team find balancing technical practicality and the aesthetics of a designer’s vision?
JQ: Because many of them have been around for a long time they invariably come up with lighting that ticks all the boxes. We have lots of examples of how they have tackled this type of thing. For Rosewood London, Martin Brudnizki Design Studio wanted 2 metre-high globe chandeliers. The aim was to produce a Verdigris effect to emulate weathering by the British climate. While brass and steel were considered, they would have resulted in chandeliers that were much too heavy for the ceiling. Producing them in aluminium and using specialist finishing techniques means they are not only lighter and less expensive but also look exactly as the designers had envisaged. (Video below)

HD: Dernier & Hamlyn work with boutiques right up to five-star mega projects – which is easier to manufacture for? What are the different challenges?
JQ: It’s less about the location and more about the designers and clients involved. Working with people who have a clear vision for the space and how the lighting fits into the design narrative are a pleasure whatever the engineering and manufacturing challenges.

HD: And finally, is there a specific D&H project that you are particularly proud of?
JQ: There are many. It’s the pride in what our team produces that keeps me here. I think my favourite hotel projects have been at The Connaught where we have worked for designer Guy Oliver on many occasions. Then there is Claridge’s which interprets my favourite design period, art deco, in beautiful ways. Although there are few luxury hotels in London and in many other places around the world where you won’t find statement lighting that has been made by us.

International lighting specialists Chelsom worked closely with the three design practices involved in the luxurious interiors- RTKL of Miami, Tillberg of Sweden and ICrave of New York- to create the stunning decor schemes which claim to ‘exceed the loftiest expectations for luxury’.

Regent Seven Seas Explorer - Chelsom

The main lighting focal point is the spectacular chandelier which hangs in the atrium between sweeping art deco staircases, intricate columns and sculptured architectural features. With a diameter of 3metres and a drop of over 4metres, the chandelier features over 6,000 individual high quality crystal octagon drops, each one attached to a chrome wire frame to prevent movement and vibration when the ship is under way. The drops are suspended from a finely engineered custom brass frame.

Further high quality glass, but in a more contemporary style, is used in the Meridian Lounge where a 5.5metre diameter horseshoe chandelier illuminates the dancefloor and surrounding tables. Three tiers of individually mouth blown teardrop glasses are illuminated from above with LED light sources.

By contrast, in the Canyon Ranch Spa Club, Chelsom created a spectacular modern lighting feature using polished stainless steel and hand sculpted glass cylinder shades. At 2.5metres diameter, the fitting draws the eye as soon as you enter the spa reception and further chandeliers were created throughout the rest of the spa.

Entertaining guests is a high priority on board and the luxurious Constellation Theatre provides the ideal setting for evening performances, many in the true Hollywood style. Chelsom created a striking chandelier to hang in the decadent stairwell which featured hand cut triedri clear glass drops hanging from a polished brass frame. Illuminated from within by a myriad of clear lamps, the chandelier adds just the right kind of sparkle to this theatrical setting.

Having a good time extends beyond the confines of the ship and shore excursions to the various destinations is a big part of the cruising programme. The Destination Centre therefore is a popular area which guests can visit and relax in whilst arranging exciting times ashore. Centred above the opulent sofas hangs a custom made Chelsom chandelier dressed with 350 individual rods each containing 5 or 6 mouth blown glass spheres in a mixture of mirrored and clear crystal glass with the light reflected off the highly polished metal frame.

Were those passengers from the great early twentieth century liners able to come back today and cruise on the Explorer, they would no doubt feel completely at home in the opulent luxury of her magnificent interiors.
