150 150 Daniel Fountain

Four British hotels are set to open their doors as part of the Mercure portfolio within the next four months, further expanding the growing Mercure hotel collection and increasing the brand’s footprint to 75 hotels in the UK.Located in London, Scotland, Milton Keynes and Darlington, the latest franchise agreements will add 394 rooms to the Mercure network and will create over 120 jobs across the regions.

Commenting on the expansion, Jonathan Sheard, Managing Director of Operations, MGallery and Mercure Hotels UK and Ireland said: “We are delighted to welcome our new partner hotels to the Mercure network in the UK. Each hotel has its own unique story and represents an exciting new destination for business and leisure travellers alike.

“We’re committed to significantly growing our Mercure hotel portfolio by 2015 and this will largely be driven through our growing franchise development in the UK. We are delighted to welcome these four new hotel partners, all of which are a natural fit for the Mercure brand.

“By joining with our business, our franchise partners will be able to boost their hotels’ existing exposure through the use of our brand name and benefit from our existing expertise, powerful global distribution networks and committed sales force.”

First to open is the Mercure Darlington Kings Hotel, which launched last week, followed closely by the Mercure London Greenwich Hotel and the Mercure Eddleston Barony Castle Hotel and Spa in Scotland later this month (October). The Mercure Milton Keynes Abbey Hill will launch in January 2013.

Originally built as a coaching inn in the early 1600s and rebuilt in 1893, the King’s Head Hotel underwent a major £8 million refurbishment programme after a blaze caused severe damage to the hotel in 2008. Now complete, the refurbished hotel located in the heart of the historic market town features 83 bedrooms, conference and banqueting suites, à la carte restaurant – Carriages No. One – and cocktail bar, Carriages. The re-opening of the renowned hotel will create approximately 50 jobs in the region.

Following a major conversion of the 1930’s Maurice Drummond House in Greenwich, the Mercure London Greenwich hotel will offer 145 bedrooms over 10 storeys. The hotel conversion project has witnessed an additional two storeys added at roof level and complete internal refurbishment, along with minor landscaping. The original building won RIBA’s London Architectural Medal in 1946 and the independently owned hotel offers exceptional views of London. The opening of the hotel will create up to 70 jobs in the local area.

With a rich history, the 4* Barony Castle Hotel and Spa in Eddleston, 17 miles south of Edinburgh, is set to become the first castle within the Mercure portfolio. Featuring 78 bedrooms, the hotel has undergone a £400,000 refurbishment programme, transforming it from a three start to a four star Mercure hotel, since signing the Accor franchise agreement. The hotel was recently awarded The Great Polish Map of Scotland listed status by Historic Scotland. The Map represents an important part of Barony Castle’s history, which saw Barony Castle and grounds used by Polish military forces based in Scotland during the Second World War.

In addition, the Abbey Hill Hotel in Milton Keynes, which is one of the first purpose built hotels in Milton Keynes, is undergoing a full transformation prior to its re-launch in January 2013. Once complete, the city-centre hotel will boast 88 bedrooms, state-of-the-art meeting rooms and newly designed and furnished public spaces.

Andy Thornton Supplies Dach & Sons, Hampstead Heath

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Dach & Sons is a cool new speakeasy style bar and 70-cover restaurant in Hampstead, the third venue to be opened by Fluid Movement, the team behind Purl and Worship Street Whistling Shop. This is their first venue to offer food, a selection of premium gourmet burgers, hot dogs and sliders, to complement their extensive selection of avant-garde cocktails, craft beers and whiskies. The design is New York-style with a clever combination of distressed timbers, white coursed-brick butcher’s shop tiles, bare bulb light fittings and a whole slug of vintage industrial furniture throughout the bar and restaurant areas, sourced from contract furniture supplier Andy Thornton.

The main dining area features heavy duty factory refectory tables, which feature steel bases legs and tops in a distressed painted finish, which each feature six bolt-on swing seats. Andy Thornton also supplied industrial-style pub tables, console tables, unique factory bar stools with worn tan leather seats and French cafe chairs in green.

Upstairs is a mini version of their hugely successful classic cocktail bar Purl in Marylebone. Here Andy Thornton supplied industrial-style bar stools, featuring steel frames in a satin pewter finish with polished timber seats. These perfectly complement the mock Tudor panelled bar front and embossed gold painted ceiling.

Forbes Group Supplies ME London

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Forbes Group is a British supplier of textiles, furniture and equipment to the hospitality industry worldwide. Its customers include international hotel groups and conference centres, blue chip companies, and premium sports venues.Forbes Group is also the European distributor for Forbes Industries (no relation), whose products are internationally recognised in hospitality, particularly in the janitorial and housekeeping context, though its front of house Birdcage Luggage Cart is an industry icon.

Forbes Group has been delighted to help ME London select products for its cutting edge project on the Strand. It has supplied textured black luggage racks that will be in keeping with the sleek monochrome rooms at ME, as well as polished stainless steel posts and ebony velour ropes for public guidance with unobtrusive chic.

Forbes Industries’ trademark brass luggage cart would not have worked in the ME context. Instead, its more contemporary angular brushed steel deluxe cart precisely met the needs of this minimal setting.

Finally, Forbes’ capacious laundry carts will be working hard to support the housekeeping team behind the scenes. Also unseen, its platform luggage carts and hand trucks will be taking the strain off the staff. Should they appear unexpectedly though, either truck’s steel and black carpet finish will not look out of place in this exciting boutique development.

We wish ME the very best with its forthcoming launch.

Ex BBC broadcasting centre to officially re-open as luxurious hotel

150 150 Daniel Fountain

An ex BBC broadcasting centre, which has just undergone a huge £4 million restoration project under new ownership, will be officially re-opening at the end of the month as a new luxurious hotel. The Wood Norton, which is situated in the heart of Worcestershire, just a few miles from the Cotswolds, and Shakespeare’s Stratford-Upon-Avon, will be hosting an exclusive complimentary champagne reception. The event will mark the end of a magnificent refurbishment project, which has seen the building transform from an old BBC broadcasting centre into a stunning 50-room lavish hotel and restaurant.

Oliver Cooke, general manager of The Wood Norton, says: “We’re absolutely thrilled with the results. The building looks fantastic, and will make for a great place for holiday makers and business professionals to eat and stay.”

He continues: “The building is steeped in history, having been built originally as a hunting lodge for European Royalty in 1897. It’s since been the home of the BBC for over 60 years, and we’re now looking to create our own piece of history by turning it into a fantastic get-away.”

The BBC bought the site in 1939 to establish an emergency broadcasting centre away from London. It became one of the largest broadcasting centres in Europe with an average output of 1,300 programmes a week. When the war was over, Wood Norton became the BBC’s engineering training centre.

The official re-opening will be taking place on Thursday 29th November. Peter Luff Member of Parliament for Mid Worcestershire, along with the local Mayors (Mayor of Evesham, Cllr Robert W Raphael and the Mayor of Pershore, Cllr Charles Tucker) will be in attendance, along with members of the BBC, business professionals and local residents. On the night, Oliver and his team will be providing hotel tours. Whilst in the main dining room, guests will have the opportunity to sample tasters from the new menu.

Throughout the evening there will also be a live jazz band, plus head chef Gary Wheeler will be providing live demonstrations and talking through the hotel’s food offerings.

Oliver concludes: “We’ve got a fantastic, experienced, friendly team in place. And we’re looking forward to introducing ourselves to the world! Bring on the 29th – The Wood Norton doors will be officially open!”

Bright botanical carpets for the Royal Berkshire hotel

150 150 Daniel Fountain

An array of eye-catching bespoke carpets from Lano Flooring Solutions now covers just under 800m2 of the prestigious Royal Berkshire hotel in Ascot, adding vibrant style to what was once the family home of relatives of Sir Winston Churchill.Devised by Monia Allegretti, Italian architect and interior designer for the Exclusive Hotels group, the new Walk of Fame axminster carpets showcase the diverse design capability of Lano Flooring Solutions and add distinct character to individual locations within the Royal Berkshire.

A damask design in a mix of mauve and yellow covers 200m2 of the main ground floor corridor and staircase, with a coordinating 12m2 rug specially made for the reception area. 230m2 of carpet in a rich shade of brown adorns the main bar and lounge, featuring a contemporary floral pattern with large petals and clusters of colour centred in the middle of each flower. This striking design places a modern spin on traditional flowery carpets. An abstract botanical vine leaf motif in shades of yellow and green covers 80m2 of the meeting room corridors, and 250m2 of carpet with a geometric circular design in different colours can be found in all five of the hotel’s meeting rooms, offering a coordinated yet individual look. A striking yellow and green carpet also bridges the area between the reception and the WC.

As Monia Allegretti explains, “our hotels are defined by bright, bold interior decoration contrasted with traditional, period exterior architecture. The Royal Berkshire is no exception; originally built for the Churchill family, my main focus when designing the carpets was to ensure that they reflected the hotel’s diverse heritage but also injected something fresh and new. Each carpet design also aims to bring the beauty of the hotel’s surrounding gardens inside the building.

“I approached the team at Lano Flooring Solutions because no matter how complex my ideas, they always deliver brilliant results. For this project, they offered the highest levels of service and design flexibility, and were extremely accommodating for both the larger quantities of carpet as well as the smaller areas. We are very pleased with the final look and have plans to work with Lano Flooring Solutions again to create carpet for further areas of the hotel.”

Lano Flooring Solutions offered an unprecedented service to the Royal Berkshire, meeting the demands for several different designs. In the meeting rooms, for example, each carpet is the same bespoke design but in different colourways to allow for ultimate design freedom.

10 row three-ply Axminster carpets in an 80% wool and 20% nylon construction were used in the public and corridor areas for durability, with a nine-row construction used for the meeting rooms.

Fameed Khalique; Exquisite materials for the interior design industry

Fameed Khalique is delighted to be commissioned by interior design consultancy Hill House Interiors to create dramatic bespoke finishes for the launch of their new showroom in Elystan Street, London SW3.Helen Bygraves, Hill House Interiors said:
“We have been working with Fameed for many years now; he is always a great source of inspiration, opening our eyes to the most usual and innovative of new products. Stunning pieces in the showroom include beautiful metallic woven rain panels, not to mention the dramatic backlit quartz on our countertop.”

Innovative ‘fabric drapery’ Stone collection launched in UK

Fameed Khalique launches the Drappi di Pietra collection from pioneering Italian stone design company, Lithos Design in the UK.

The collection uses an innovative and eco-friendly technique to portray the texture and strong three-dimensional quality of fabric drapery in stone.

The organic solidity of stone opens up an unprecedented aesthetic of delicate silhouettes, light and shade and streamline dimensions.

New lines added to the semi-precious stone collection

Fameed Khalique has also added new lines to his coveted semi-precious stone collection creating a beautiful collection of pastel colourways including amethyst and rose quartz complemented and given depth by the tones of the hugely popular and versatile pyrite and rock crystal.

Fameed Khalique comments,
“We are delighted to introduce new lines to our semi-precious stone collection, the subtle pastel shades of stones such as amethyst and rose quartz create an understated look for an opulent and resplendent material.

Pyrite is hugely popular and is effective in achieving the look of antiqued mirror, softening the look whilst creating a sumptuous finish.

Bathroom innovation in a material world

150 150 Daniel Fountain

The variety of choice can be a key asset of any brand, creating infinite design opportunities only limited by imagination but the success of design, whether in a hotel or a home, relies upon the importance of understanding the qualities of the materials it works with, on a practical as well as aesthetic level. For Laufen, this has never been more prevalent than now with wellness options available in solid surface, steel, acrylic and ceramic.

2012 saw the launch of Laufen’s first solid surface bathtub, as part of its new Palomba Collection. Solid surface has many advantages for the hotel bathroom, chief among them being the possibility to carry our repairs should any surface defects arise and its low sound transmission, so guests won’t disturb neighbouring rooms when it’s time to take a bath.

Ilker Hussein, Manager Global Projects at Laufen, comments: “Laufen is the only global manufacturer that is able to manufacture baths and shower trays from steel, solid surface and acrylic and ceramic – and there is a place for each of them, and a key benefit for each of them.“

However, it is not just wellness products – it is Laufen’s superior knowledge of crafting bathroom pieces from ceramic that has led to its huge success on a global level. The company is pioneering a new ceramic material, which results in ceramic pieces being up to 40 per cent lighter than fine fireclay, and with a brilliant white finish minus the normal yellowish tinge which is common with ceramic products. This new material allows much finer and sharper edges to be created and blurs the aesthetic lines between ceramic and solid surfaces.

However, the implications of this go well beyond aesthetic with a positive environmental impact due to lower weight of distribution alongside easier installation.

Ilker continues: “Washbasins are often the main focus of the hotel bathroom and by recently starting to offer solid surfacing for a seamless finish or ceramic basins that can be cut to fit in any space Laufen gives hotel designers total freedom of creativity.”

For hotel bathroom washbasins, however, ceramic still has the edge over solid surface in terms of practicality, in many instances, not least as it offers very high scratch, chemical and heat resistance. Ceramic can also be used to introduce individuality to the bathroom by adding colour, as it can be manufactured in various colour finishes including white, white matt, warm grey, black and matt black.

All in all, Laufen’s ability to craft fine bathroom pieces from a wide range of materials brings a whole new finesse to the hotel bathroom, at a time when contemporary design being pushed to its limits. Visit Laufen at London Sleep 2012, Stand G21 + G23, on 21-22 November 2012 to explore and discuss the material possibilities.

“Hotel Future” – Set to Revolutionise Vocational Training

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Enthusiastically received by Government and supported by the biggest names in the hospitality industry, Hotel Future, to open in Oldham in 2015, will be the first Luxury Hotel in the world to double as a recognised training centre. Students in the hotel, drawn from all over the UK, will seek a range of qualifications from apprenticeships and BTEC to University Degree and Business School Qualifications.Hotel Future Oldham, is the first of what it is hoped will become a chain of luxury hotels across the UK where ‘learning by doing’ in providing excellent hospitality is at the heart and core of the business.

The apprentices, management trainees, interns and managers, who will be the staff of the hotel as well as the ‘learners’ will enhance and develop their careers as the future generation of leaders of the industry. Top international universities are expected to badge degree and business school level qualifications.

Hotel Future will have 120 bedrooms and will operate as an upscale hotel. Guests will not be expected to make any compromises because of the hotel’s unique focus of bringing training and education into the ‘real world’ of a luxury commercial hotel.

Hospitality industry backers include Hilton, Marriott, Malmaison, Carlson Rezidor and the Radisson Blu Edwardian Group. The project will create thousands of jobs in construction, hospitality and education. When open, 100apprenticeships will commence each year with many also benefitting from scholarships. Other learners will be on block or day release alongside others following full time specially developed training and educational programmes. The learners will be working with, and learning from, professional permanent staff.

It is planned for four levels of learners in Hotel Future. The entry level, -apprenticeships; Team Leaders – those seeking to move up the industry career ladder; Middle Management on short management courses – and an Executive Management Leadership Programme. All of these routes will lead to appropriate vocational, professional or academic qualifications.

“Today we are launching a genuine World First initiative,” commented Stephen Miles from the Manchester Hoteliers Association. “Hotel Future will change lives. It will also be a catalyst for re-developing Oldham City Centre as it will link with the re-furbished Queen Elizabeth Hall to create a conference and meeting centre of national importance. It is often over-looked that hospitality, as David Cameron recently reminded us, is the country’s fourth largest industry. Hospitality employs 2 million people or 6% of the working population and generates over £60 billion for the UK economy.

“Hotel Future as a concept sprung from the Manchester Hoteliers Association’s desire to attract and retain talent in our industry and we believe this is a shining example of what the public and private sectors can do when they work towards a common goal.”

Company Profile of NaturalMat: From hotel bed to flower bed

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Sometimes companies can start by accident. It was an accident of location (Odhams Wharf, Topsham outside Exeter) and history that birthed Naturalmat. Berthed next to the shipyard in his houseboat one of the directors was forced to mull over the nature of mattresses for boats. The company started making custom mattresses for yachts, and realised the quality had to be very high but the sizes were not only non standard but frequently the mattresses had to be shaped to fit the sleeping berths. The two directors, Peter Tindall and Mark Tremlett embarked on a programme of research to find the best materials to make mattresses from – mattresses that had to be pest proof, of any shape or size and fire retardant. At about the same time a personal quest started to find a hypoallergenic baby mattress. One without chemicals, plastics or other potentially damaging materials for a new child. The research was thorough – trips to the East to sort out the best type of coir, sourcing local wool and finding the right collaborators to manufacture locally- even research into wrapping materials to satisfy a personal passion the two had developed in their search to make sure everything in the process was organic. Consciously too they sourced as local as possible to enhance their growing list of green credentials.

Located on the lakeside by the world famous Pitlochry Theatre, Fonab Castle has undergone a grand refurbishment transforming it into a magnificent hotel residence. The boutique hotel offers breath-taking views and with the luxurious interior refurbishment, this is the most exciting boutique hotel to visit in Scotland.

Stylematters were delighted to be selected to design, supply and manufacture all furniture for this truly unique project. We are delighted to have been involved in the transformation of the castle to 18 individual boutique bedrooms plus a magnificent bridal suite situated on the top floor. The extensive project also included a huge extension to the Castle houses, creating a dining room to house 120 guests, conference room, a further 26 bedrooms. Also within the grounds are 12 superb holiday lodges that have been designed and furnished to the highest standard.

“It was a pleasure working on this project and particularly with a client having such enthusiasm and knowledge of Interior Design and the clever use of modern colours in traditional fabrics, wall coverings and flooring, resulting in a complete enhancement of the historic castle.”

Following an extensive refurbishment, the hotel needed a finishing touch to ensure its entrance was as impressive as the luxurious boutique interior.Red Carnation Hotels Projects Director Brian Brennan approached Andy Thornton to create a curved entrance canopy, similar in style to one they had previously supplied to another Red Carnation Hotel, Rubens at the Palace in London.

Designed, manufactured and installed by their in-house architectural metalwork team, the impressive canopy is 6m in length with a 1.5m projection. It was manufactured from mild steel and aluminum section with toughened safety glass infill panels.

Andy Thornton incorporated ornate cast cresting detail and elegant spandrel brackets, between decorative corner posts and included a functional rainwater gutter. The structure was pre-treated with a durable coastal specification polyester powder coat prior to delivery and installation.

Installed bang on schedule for the reopening of the hotel, Projects Director Brian Brennan was delighted with the finished structure. Brian commented: “The Andy Thornton Architectural Metalwork Department has delivered another fantastic result. The canopy is a functional, eye-catching feature which has certainly met the brief of creating an impressive entrance for a hotel of this quality.”

A new star is born – ME London

150 150 Daniel Fountain

I spend 25 years in practice trying to make sure the interior layout of hotels worked for our clients, frequently battling with architects whose only concern seemed to be the building. So when I walk into a new hotel that brings gasps of delight from me it is galling to find the interior was done by an architect as well as the exterior. Just lately this has been happening too much for comfort – first with Magdalen Chapter in Exeter and now with the stunning new ME in London’s the Aldwych.

For years no 1 the Aldwych has been the competitor for the Savoy in this area. Both now will have to look to their service to compete with this new boy on the block.
It won’t be to everyone’s taste but Norman Foster’s practise has created an hotel that has given me the most aesthetic excitement I have had from an hotel in ages. Yes Foster – no wonder a hotel representative moaned that this was the most expensive hotel build in Europe in 2012. But boy, do you get what you pay for! Pared down black and white interiors sparkle with a feast of visual delights totally in tune with my own aesthetic. From the showing of my favourite movie playing silently behind the concierge desk (the black and white wonder that is Orson Wells ‘Third Man’) to the black granite reception area this is an hotel that every designer must visit and see.

The visual impact starts with the approach from the Strand. passing the entrance to the Savoy I realised that the white Portland stone tower I was looking at could only be the new hotel. Still obstructed by contractors fencing as the exterior paths etc. are completed, it glowed in the evening light, the Portland stone showing how brilliant other buildings around could be if cleaned. I remember this building as part of the BBC World Service, but it was previously Marconi House and in the early 20th Century it was London’s first radio station (and previously the Gaiety Theatre). The ME London hotel is the very first flagship property in which everything, from the shell of the building to the bathroom fittings, has been designed by Foster + Partners, created by Sir Norman Foster (echoes of the original Arne Jacobsen Royal Hotel in Copenhagen).

Perfectly positioned in the heart of London’s Knightsbridge, the infamous Tattersalls Room at the five-star Berkeley Hotel is one of the latest interior design projects to be added to Design Forum Interiors’ impressive portfolio. Responsible for its recent refurbish, the designers created an elegant and notable space for corporate and social occasions that commemorates the famous blood stock auction house that once stood on the site. The magnificent room with grand windows has been beautifully updated in a style that complements the existing Tattersalls scheme. The prized equestrian portraits provide a main focus and inspiration for the luxurious space that inherits unrivalled character and desirable prestige amongst its surrounding function rooms. Sourced from Italy, premium custom-made wallpaper classical in its style of diamond patterning has been meticulously designed to mimic the classic Tattersall check and scale of the door’s diamond panelling. The colour of the horizontal stripe was a dark grey, while the vertical a dark blue, highlights the traditional Tattersall pattern of horizontal weave being separate to the vertical, the colours however kept it fresh and up to date.

The carpet was custom designed and woven to tie in all aspects of colour and pattern, whilst the curtains and pelmet, made from a custom weaved wool, reflected the oval rooms shape, scale and new contemporary aesthetic. Ambient, decorative lighting with brass finishes occupies the walls to cater for different events that the room holds, while rich wood detailing adds to the room’s authentic and distinguished setting.

Russell Jones, Senior Designer comments:

“The beauty of the newly designed Tattersalls Room is that it doesn’t detract away from its original heritage. Every aspect was designed with ‘Tattersall’s’ in mind, and with modern focus as a front foot in the process. We felt it was important to complement this, rather than compete with it; we took the original Tattersall’s theme and simply gave it an uplift, bringing it up to date with current trends and fashions. The wool check was custom designed to replicate the size of the diamond patterned main entrance door, which remained – this created a new sense of scale, and one which was more contemporary than the original rather small check.”

The Tattersall’s Room benefits from the adjoining ante-room that is separated by double doors that can be opened out into a large space, if required.

The St. Regis Rome Unveils ‘Couture Suite’

150 150 Daniel Fountain

The majestic St. Regis Rome is delighted to announce the latest addition to its collection of signature suites at the landmark hotel with the debut of the Couture Suite. Designed by The Gallery at HBA London, the Couture Suite offers an escape into the glamorous world of Italian flair and high-end fashion, combined with timeless St. Regis elegance. If the stylish streets of Rome were a catwalk, this one-of-a-kind suite would be the ultimate backstage dressing room to prepare for the show. Drawing inspiration from the city’s renowned couture houses, as well as St. Regis’ blend of classic sophistication with a modern sensibility, the suite features signature furnishings and accessories which celebrate the best of Italian style. The suite’s design carefully incorporates the spirit of Italian fashion, with an emphasis on flowing shapes and meticulous attention to detail.

The expansive 150 square metre Couture Suite is situated on the second floor of The St. Regis Rome. The master bedroom features an elegant central living room where details unfold layer by layer. A high ceiling and neutral, linen-textured walls form the backdrop for its exquisitely luxurious materials and intricate embellishments, such as the nail-head trim on the timber panelling and millwork, the softest Italian leathers and finely stitched embroidery. A grand antiqued mirror above the original marble fireplace reflects the light from the cascading glass rods of the shimmering chandelier. Three large windows frame views of the city, including Piazza della Repubblica with its historical Fountain of Najadi.

And in a clever twist, a television rests on an easel, thus adding to the space’s comfortable yet refined artistic elegance rather than becoming a dominant focal point.

Chrysalis Contracts Transform Fleming’s Townhouse, Mayfair

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Chrysalis Contracts have been receiving fantastic feedback on the back of their recent refurbishment of The Fleming’s Townhouse, Mayfair.

The iconic property consisting of a luxurious 5*hotel and serviced apartments was completed earlier this year in time to accommodate visitors of the London 2012 Olympics. With a brief to create individually designed rooms to give a luxury home from home feel, the Chrysalis designers paid great attention to the finer details to ensure this was achieved to satisfy even the most discerning guests.

Genevieve Blower, Senior Designer at Chrysalis admits “Although somewhat challenging, it was more than a little enjoyable creating a unique scheme for each room within the 5-storey Townhouse. However in doing this, some twenty one schemes were generated overall so it was important to ensure that they blended together seamlessly to carry consistency throughout the building.”

An elegant, harmonious scheme was chosen for the main whilst ensuring that every room had an identity of its own and was truly boutique in style. The ambience of the main lounge areas was enhanced by using a palette of calming pale blues and taupe alongside stronger tones of gold and burnt amber. These combined with rich dark wood furniture pieces and metallic accessories formed a stunning timeless aesthetic. Artwork specified included large scale original painted canvas pieces and framed prints such as vintage maps of London and iconic city landmarks to re-enforce the hotel’s heritage. The bedrooms offer a collection of various finishes, some with a more mature palette of sage green and claret with dark wenge wood finishes and others with rich royal blues and mellow gold tones.

Using an eclectic mix of classical furniture, decorative objects, bespoke embroideries, textured rugs and original commissioned artwork, a luxuriously refined scheme was created whilst also giving the impression that the individual pieces could have been accumulated over time – as would be the case in your own home.

Genevieve added “It’s always nice to work on a highly publicised project such as Fleming’s Townhouse. With the great comments and feedback we have been receiving over the past couple of months, it’s overwhelming to know we have made such a positive impact on one of London’s oldest hotels.”

Luxury Hotels: Myth or Reality?

150 150 Daniel Fountain

I recently had a debate about a newly opened London five star hotel with a couple of hoteliers from two major brands. More accurately one hotel GM, and one ‘human resources’ expert working within another major brand. Basically their argument was that the hotel is a very profitable unit therefore it is a good luxury hotel. There are so many flaws in this that it seems well worth analysing, because their logic explains the rise of the boutiques at the expense of the brands. It also explains the increasing number of new brand launches that seem to focus on the creation of hotel ‘boutique chains’ that are then labelled luxury and sold at exorbitant rates, particularly in London.London is a peculiar hotel market that every operator wants to be represented in. It is one of the world’s most visited cities, and of the many 30 million tourists who come to the UK every year, 52% never go outside London. Nationally overseas tourists spend was over £18billion, internal tourists over £74billion, with tourism employment over 7% of the UK workforce. Surveys persistently show London hotel occupancy running at around 90%, so making money from a London hotel is a no-brainer – indeed I have joked for years that money could be made renting out park benches overnight in London, such is the demand. To judge a luxury hotel a success solely by its occupancy and profitability in the metropolis is therefore a completely false argument.

So how are we to judge the provision of luxury, and thereby a successful luxury hotel? My argument with the hoteliers was in part sparked by the poorer quality of many of the hotels opened or refurbished in London over the last couple of years, compared to their tourist rivals in other countries. It is not just the congestion at our airports that deters visitors to the UK it is the comparison of what is provided by an hotel compared to what can be experienced elsewhere. During my discussion I was encouraged by the nods of agreement from the European developer side of the table, when I said that there is a growing gulf between the real luxury market and what is seen by the hotel major brands as luxury.

Guide to running a Practice: Cashflow Forecasting and Studio Management 2

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Last week I published an article with an example of a cashflow forecast document appended. One of the problems frequently encountered in practices, whether new or long established, is matching available resources, human and financial, to the needs of the projects going through the studio. No two designers have the same skill set, one being good at , for example, joinery detailing or millwork in the US (wake up at the back there) and another being strong on the conceptual aesthetic side, sometime disparagingly referenced as being a ‘rag picker’. Ensuring members of your team are playing to their strengths is part of your management task.Unfortunately jobs don’t come in at tidy intervals that lend themselves to giving everyone a nice steady work flow. There are a number of ways of dealing with this, and I first want to look at it in relation to last week’s area, cashflow. This is in part because keeping your team happy comes from being able to give them the essential – their pay. Paying them is predicated on your being able to bring in the money in a steady stream.

Remember the Golden Rule – he who has the Gold Rules, so chasing Clients for money is a delicate matter, but you are a talent worthy of hire and therefore worthy of being paid properly. If the Client frigs about on payment, find another client and then dump the poor payer – and don’t do ‘owt for nowt’.

When you start, or after one of frequent recessions (usually, it has to be said, engineered by our political leaders) you may well find work comes in with a rush. The those first in line, the creatives, those making up the ‘mood boards’ or defining concepts are the first to be put under pressure. If more than one job appears, and particularly after recession with a list of established client this can be three or four jobs, then you have the beginnings of bottlenecks in the studio and a sense of panic can creep in. My practise once received eleven jobs in the same envelope! How do you cope in this situation?

The first priority is to keep the Client happy that you are progressing all the work. Then look at the type of project and where and when the stage payments are going to come in. Put the stage payments into your cashflow forecast. What does it do to your income? No don’t think wow new car, think staffing. you want to progress the work you have efficiently and it might be tempting to buy Armani, but first priority is to keep the business on a stable footing not boost your short term income. Use the cashflow forecasting to look at staffing, where does the spend come? Can you spread the work time wise – e.g. speed up job A and slow down job B, without Client pain. This can then spread workload across a longer period enabling it perhaps to be dealt with by existing staff.

Can you bring in a mate to help (known as freelancing) from your old firm? Maybe someone who is employed elsewhere but would be happy to do a couple of evenings or a weekend with you for old times sake and a bit of extra cash. If it is CAD work maybe a freelance CAD worker can do it, with careful checking of course. Finally (and if it’s 11 jobs, probably) do you take on a new employee?

Your cashflow is where you will find the answers, but before catapulting yourself from being you and your spouse running hard to develop the business into becoming an employer, make sure you can afford the process and that there are not alternatives. Remember my words from the first article: ” without good management this first bold step can be over a precipice to disaster”.

The first step to moving from being the designer to running a design business is to learn that you are no longer just an Indian, you are now a Chief, a leader of your own tribe, ‘der management’.

Portugal’s first hotel under Hilton Worldwide’s Conrad brand has recently opened in the Algarve’s Quinta do Lago resort. The property’s design was inspired by an 18th century Portuguese palace and has 154 rooms as well as five restaurants and bars.Brintons worked closely with Kate Long from Rethink Interiors to develop carpets for the public areas, including guest corridors, ballroom, business centre, Lago lounge and hand tufted rugs for the atrium area.

State of the art Kulm Spa St. Moritz to launch in one of Switzerland’s historic well-being resorts

150 150 Daniel Fountain

St. Moritz may be famous as a winter ski destination, but the origins of its popularity lie in summer spa holidays and the legendary Kulm Hotel St. Moritz is delighted to be returning to its roots with the launch of the CHF12 million (approx £8 million) Kulm Spa St. Moritz, covering 2,000 sq m.St. Moritz owes its original fame to its healing spas, dating back almost 3,500 years. In the 19th century, St. Moritz became popular among the British, who made the long journey over the high mountain passes to spend the summer enjoying a little bit of R&R in the crisp, therapeutic mountain air and glorious sunshine.

It was only in 1864 that St. Moritz became a popular winter destination, too. The then owner of the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, Johannes Badrutt, initiated winter holidays to the resort by laying a bet with his last departing summer guests that the local weather would be so good even in December that they could sun themselves on the hotel’s terrace; if not, he would cover the cost of their vacation himself. He won the bet and within two years, the hotel was fully booked with guests staying through the winter.

From 14 December 2012, the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz will combine the two factors that have made the resort famous over the years – well-being and skiing – and open the doors of the Kulm Spa St. Moritz. Its location immediately sets the Kulm Spa St. Moritz apart, with its panoramic views over Lake St. Moritz and the Engadine Valley, which will now be enjoyed from an outdoor heated pool with water jet features, a 20m-indoor pool area, Jacuzzi pool, relaxation room, 13 treatment rooms including the private spa suite.

The philosophy of the Kulm Spa St. Moritz will be based on a three-pillar concept – Relaxation, Detox/Purification and Regeneration – which can be enjoyed individually or in combination to cater to each individual guest’s needs.

Calming spa treatments, such as the signature Kulm Massage, aromatherapy, manicures and pedicures, will come under the Relaxation theme, while Detox/Purification will offer deep-reaching body treatments, such as wraps, and facials, and Regeneration will be all about rejuvenating the body through nutrition, personal fitness sessions and lymphatic drainage treatments. All of the new spa treatments will focus on incorporating the five senses, with a view to transporting guests away from their fast-paced daily lives and returning them to inner harmony.

There will be a large private spa suite for two people seeking to enjoy quality time together, such as a newly-married couple or a mother and daughter; in addition to use of their own steam bath, bio sauna, double water-jet bathtub, heated waterbed and lounge, these guests will receive Champagne and healthy nibbles. Spa treatments designed specifically for both men and teenagers will also be available.

Most of the spa treatments in the Kulm Spa St. Moritz will use organic products, some of them from the Alps. For example, Alpienne lotions made from wild Alpine plants will be used for massages and Niance, a new Swiss beauty brand using Edelweiss, will be applied during facials. Similarly, the interior of the Kulm Spa St. Moritz will reflect its location, with walls clad in natural materials from the Engadine region, such as pale grey granite and larch and white spruce woods. The end result will give guests the feeling of being at one with the Kulm Spa St. Moritz’s natural environment.

Holiday Inn Farnborough

150 150 Daniel Fountain

The reason for this visit to the Holiday Inn Farnborough was to review the Spirit Health Club that is connected to the hotel, but I couldn’t stay in a hotel without taking a few photos of the hotel too to share with our readers… turn to page two and beyond for those. The Spirit Health Club is available to residents of the Holiday Inn and to non-residents by way of a club membership. It has recently had a £50,000 investment which has bought new equipment for the gym and a steam room and sauna for the pool area. The staff are friendly and you cannot fault the Health Club in terms of value for money, equipment or accessibility. As far as the interior design of the gym goes, it’s cream walls, blue carpet and inoffensive. The gym is located in the basement area so the ceilings are quite low and due to supporting walls, there are a variety of areas for the different equipment they have which means you do get a degree of privacy. It’s a shame that more hasn’t been done to decorate the walls as many are just left bare and uninspiring. Some areas do have televisions to entertain, but with the lack of natural light, it just needs brightening up – it would no doubt have a positive impact on the gym-goers.

The pool area has a Jacuzzi, brand new sauna and steam room which are great to sit and unwind after a day of meetings in the hotel. Whilst there are windows in the pool area, it’s not flooded with daylight and you’re not completely visible from the car park. I noted how one disused Jacuzzi area was filled with gravel which could have easily contained some artificial plants to liven up the area and provide a more impressive and luxurious environment.

Overall it’s a fantastic little Health Club that deserves a visit but will possibly need a little more investment in its interior design in the future to keep it competitive with other local gyms.

For a three star hotel, you can’t say you don’t get value for money with the free use of the Health Club. Even the hotel offering is excellent with free WiFi, large rooms and additional toiletries to those expected as ‘standard’. The Group is present on all segments, from luxury to budget, with its Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Novotel, Mercure, ibis, ibis budget and Formula 1 brands. In the first semester of 2012 alone, Accor opened more than 1,000 rooms – 9 hotels – on the continent. Accor reentered in Tunisia with the opening of an ibis and a Novotel in Tunis. The Group also consolidated its market leadership in Morocco with the opening of Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea & Spa and Sofitel Casablanca Tour Blanche as well as the launch of its ibis budget brand.

In addition, an ibis has just opened in Dakar and a second one will soon open in Lagos, Nigeria. The Group has recently signed a management contract to take over under the Sofitel flag, the Hotel Ivoire in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. All together, almost 2,000 rooms will have opened through the year.

Roman Makes Headline News

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Leading UK Shower Manufacturer, Roman Limited, have made headline news by being interviewed live on the BBC News channel, to give their response on the GDP figures, on the day they were announced, and the company used the opportunity to publicly back the Made in Britain Campaign.

The company were part of a series of four interviews which took place across the Business Park on which they are based. Their Chairman and founder, Gerry Osborne, was interviewed by BBC News reporter, Nick Ravenscroft, who was interested to hear about the contract side of the business, along with the company’s involvement in the Made in Britain Campaign.

Although the GDP figures indicated a drop in the Construction Industry, Gerry was quick to point out that this figure includes public sector projects and that the private housebuild sector, has been much more positive throughout 2012. As a key supplier into new build residential projects, Roman has seen this sector starting to develop again.

Gerry then went to talk about Roman’s involvement with the Made in Britain campaign, which was launched in 2011 by Stoves UK. Roman were one of the early backers of the campaign, which now has the support of 600 businesses.

Gerry commented in the interview: “We’ve had the euphoria of the Olympics. I think that was a great thing for Great Britain, and I think that now what needs to happen is the population, the Government, the opposition, the unions, we all need to get behind Made in Great Britain. Because that’s what’s important. It was a movement that began over 12 months ago and there are now 600 supporters for that, but I think we need 50 million participants for that too.”

Roman were pleased to have the opportunity to be involved in the interviews, and give the point of view of a manufacturing business. Gerry comments: “We were delighted to find out that Newton Aycliffe was set to be a location for a series of interviews about the economy and the GDP figures. It’s great that our region, and specifically our local area, along with the bathroom industry, was given a voice on a national level. The interview was a fantastic opportunity to talk about the Made in Britain campaign on a national level, and to put it into the spotlight. We were keen to highlight just how vital manufacturing in the UK is, and how important it is for the end user to buy British.”

A Bavarian Beauty: Hilton Munich Park

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Nestled in the heart of Bavaria within the vibrant Englischer Garten, the Hilton Munich Park has recently been renovated by JOI-Design to have a style that draws upon its idyllic setting along the banks of the Eisbach Creek. Previously disjointed and lacklustre spaces have been transformed into ones with a cohesive and sophisticated design that is woven into the lush greenery and rippling streams of the surroundings to provide a calming retreat for both business and leisure guests. In the lobby, a cosier “human” scale with options for socialising and degrees of privacy was introduced. Prior to the renovation, the area’s scattered furniture and open-plan, double-height volume resulted in a vast yet cluttered feeling. The designers have eliminated this through the creation of “zoned” layouts.

Anodized metal balustrades in varying heights separate the seating from the traffic flow to turn the atmosphere into a cosy “living room”. In the lounge’s centre, a sinuous “S-shaped” sofa further breaks up the area into more intimate groupings, while barstools at café tables near the pastry counter are suitable for a quick coffee. The existing reception desk was split into two halves to disperse guests within the space; overhead, a smoked oak panel inset with horizontal light strips creates a focal point, closing off the once exposed conference level and lowering the volume of the space below to make it more inviting. In addition, the designers worked with a lighting designer to form a central light sculpture made from assorted lengths of glowing fibre optic flower petals that hang from the coved ceiling.

Eye-catching accents have been added to spark guests’ imaginations. On the staircase landing, flower petals coated in champagne coloured anodized aluminium are enclosed in a rectangular timber frame backlit by LEDs to form an intriguing art installation. Throughout the lobby, glass and mirrored panels etched with three overlapping patterns of gilded tree branches disperse layered shadows of twigs. This motif is echoed in the metal screens that encircle the lobby, dressing-up shop windows to give them a warmer appeal and framing the entry into People’s Bar in a way that draws guests into the space.

Inspired by garden hedges, these trellises allow travellers resting in the bar to “see and be seen” while also providing a sense of shelter from the large lobby.

The Beverly Hills Hotel named first historic landmark for the city of Beverly Hills, California

150 150 Daniel Fountain

The Beverly Hills Hotel has been named the first Historic Landmark for the city of Beverly Hills, as recently announced by the Southern California City’s Cultural Heritage Commission. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, The Beverly Hills Hotel opened in 1912 prior to the founding of Beverly Hills itself which was built around the glamorous hotel. To this day, the iconic property remains at the heart of the star-studded Beverly Hills community and is devoting all of 2012 to the 100th anniversary celebration of its heritage, not only as a newly-announced landmark and second home to Hollywood royalty but also as a hospitality standard-bearer for future generations.

In recognition of this, a “Landmark Offer” has been introduced for hotel stays throughout the fall. Guests will receive a third or fourth night complimentary when reserving rooms from September 7 to December 30, 2012. Rates starting at £312 a night.

“We are truly grateful to the city of Beverly Hills for this Historic Landmark honour,” said Christopher Cowdray, chief executive officer of Dorchester Collection. “We have always been inspired by the magic and beauty of our Beverly Hills location, and it has helped provide The Beverly Hills Hotel with an iconic backdrop. As we celebrate our 100th anniversary this year, we look forward to highlighting this new Historic Landmark designation with great pride and joy.”

The hotel’s award as the city’s first Historic Landmark will be celebrated on September 12, 2012 in a special gathering for the Beverly Hills community. The event will include the opening of a historic time capsule, placed at the property’s front red-carpet entrance in 1993 when the hotel closed for a two and a half year refurbishment. The capsule’s location is marked by a gold plaque which indicates it is to be opened during the hotel’s centennial year. While its contents are reportedly ‘unknown’, artefacts including a cigar from frequent guest Milton Berle and hand-drawings from a frequent celebrity guest are rumoured to be inside. A new time capsule will also be planted and the city mayor’s office will issue a proclamation declaring the ceremonious day the official “Beverly Hills Hotel Day.” Other Centennial activities for The Beverly Hills Hotel include ongoing dining, spa and anniversary package offerings. An added highlight of the year-long anniversary celebration is the book launch of The Beverly Hills Hotel – The First 100 Years, by Beverly Hills resident Robert Anderson, great-grandson of the property’s original owner and official historian for the hotel.

“Our new Historic Landmark status inspires us to continue to raise the bar when it comes to service and hospitality leadership,” said Edward A. Mady, regional director, West Coast, USA and general manager. “The Beverly Hills Hotel philosophy of ‘We Care’ is designed to provide not only a historically outstanding travel experience for our guests, but also to present a wonderful work environment for our employees and a welcoming local haven for our neighbours. We will ever be proud to call Beverly Hills home, and we thank the Cultural Heritage Commission for this wonderful recognition.”

150 150 Daniel Fountain

The wallpaper renaissance showed no signs of slowing down as the leading design houses launched their new collections for commercial and domestic interiors for the autumn at London Design Week in September. Many of the new designs have been unveiled through Fabrics & Papers, the leading online retailer for curtain fabrics, upholstery fabrics and designer wallpaper.Linwoodlaunched an eccentric and playful collection of designer wallpaper in London called Art House which was one of the highlights on show. It draws inspiration from an eclectic range of sources including cityscapes, forest walks, bold fonts and English tea. With a combination of bright colours and sepia topes the designs make an ideal wallpaper portfolio.

Cole and Son, one of the most successful wallpaper houses in the last decade launched its Festival Stripes collection at the exhibition. The collection is inspired by the marquees, racing colours and blazers found at British sporting events and festivals. The 12 designs in the collection, in a total of 56 crisp and modern colour ways, work well in both contemporary and classis settings setting.

Sanderson also kept to the classis English theme with its new Richmond Hill wallpaper portfolio featuring 8 designs including paisleys, stripes and damasks The collection follows the English tradition of seeking inspiration for interior design from around the globe using new and old imagery from India China and Europe. The wallpapers will enhance both contemporary and traditional interiors utilising a soft useable palette.

Castellani is a sophisticated collection of designs withan emphasis on textural detail reflecting the textures of the Castellani and Moselle fabric collections which feature velvets, chenilles and complex jacquards and natural woven designs. This included Fresco Birds, which creates an effect of a beaten up plaster wall complete with paint marks, old nails and graffiti-style scratches which is softened by decaying grey swallows flitting across the paper. Also new for 2012 is Honey Bees, a geometric honeycomb pattern interspersed with bees, created using the traditional surface print technique for a hand-stamped finish.

Emma Vans Agnew, design director, Fabricsandpapers.com, said: “The leading interior design houses presented a myriad of designs and textures for their wallpaper collections at London Design Week using inspiration from historical archives as well fashion trends of the moment. The new designs epitomised the house styles of the major design teams. Shades of grey and muted natural colours are the predominant colours of the moment providing a calming base layer build on.

By exploring www.fabricsandpapers.com, customers can create their own schemes and request wallpaper samples from over 6,000 carefully selected wallpapers and fabrics. andel’s Hotel Prague: A design pioneer looks back on 10 successful years

150 150 Daniel Fountain

The andel’s Hotel Prague and Vienna International Hotels & Resorts (VI) are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the 4-star hotel as well as the birth of the andel’s design hotel brand. Even today, the hotel continues to represent a new dimension in terms of design that has been popular from the beginning with locals, business guests, design enthusiasts and individual tourists from all over the world. Since the opening of the first andel’s hotel in 2002, VI has opened three further hotels of this brand.Ten years ago, in 2002, the first andel’s Hotel opened in the modern and lively commercial district of Anděl in the centre of Prague. The neighbourhood gave its name to a brand that would soon be exported to Poland (Cracow and Łódź) and Germany (Berlin). The successful design concept, bearing the mark of British architects and interior designers Jestico+Whiles and managed by Vienna International Hotels & Resorts, looks back: nearly 1,300 andel’s rooms and 2,600 andel’s beds are transporting the Prague-based success story out into the world.

James Dilley, Associate Director of Jestico + Whiles, is proud to have been part of the design team that helped to create the andel’s hotel brand 10 years ago: “Sense of place is important, and our contemporary design makes use of subtle references to the tradition of Bohemian glass manufacture, with a modern emphasis on style and comfort, so we used it in glowing, jewel-like boxes carved into roughly split locally quarried limestone. We designed the reception desk as a floating block of honed stone, the staircase as a flying ramp and the rooms as extremely comfortable, warm and reviving. Now, 10 years later, we are delighted that the concept for a new way of living is still fresh, optimistic and refreshing.”

It did not take long for the successful concept to receive several awards: the andel’s Hotel Prague won the FX International Design Award 2002 shortly after its grand opening, it was chosen into the TOP 100 Luxury Hotels in the World for the Travellers’ Choice Award in 2006 and 2007, and it received the TripAdvisor® Travellers’ Choice™ Award 2008. Many more awards followed for the other three andel’s as well, such as the European Hotel Award and the Design Hotel Award for the andel’s in Łódź and the honour of being selected Poland’s Trendiest Hotel for the andel’s Cracow.

Boujis’ latest venture in Hong Kong

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Exporting the British design style overseas to Hong Kong, Blacksheep have designed Boujis members club, bringing a modern interpretation of traditional British style and heritage to the eastern metropolis.Opened in October 2012, the distinguished Boujis members club is set within the Soho district and encapsulates the British design aesthetic, implementing Georgian inspired decoration and traditional furniture.

The wooden library style club reception area is encased with decorative timber wall panels, which are complemented by soft lighting. The designers have designed a bespoke wall covering made from wooden cut out graphic lettering of different sizes fused together, creating a mix of alphabet symbols.

Stained deep blue timber panelling on the walls and ceiling lead into the lounge and bar area, creating a deeply relaxing environment for early afternoons and stylish setting for late evenings. The Georgian pattern featured ceiling further implements the British heritage into the club, modernized with LED lighting inserted in the panelling, which disperses a light neon glow.

The graphic design of a union jack subtly glows out from a gold smoked mirror set within the bar, paying homage to the club’s country of origin. The glowing backdrop of the bar also displays a variety of indulgent ingredients used to create Boujis’ famous cocktails.

Deep luxurious turquoise banquette seating lines the edges of the room, adding to the glamorous and sophisticated interior.

The club, leading off the lounge, is a spacious area that mixes high tech AV and large bespoke, state of the art HD video screens on the ceiling and walls enabling a different experience for members every evening. A VIP area is set off the end of the bar, away from the crowd, with intimate curved seating and an additional lounge space.

Blacksheep’s CEO, Tim Mutton comments, “The mix of local tradition, philosophy, manufacture, and luxury has always fascinated me and the bright lights of Hong Kong and the energy that it emulates is aspirational for any designer in hospitality.

Exporting the famous Boujis nightclub from London to Hong Kong has been an exciting project with various challenges and a key part was complementing its new location whilst injecting the British aesthetic and charm”

A self sustaining solution for electronically controlled taps

150 150 Daniel Fountain

With water saving being a crucial factor in the building and refurbishment of commerical projects to ensure that they meet the necessary criteria for efficiency and sustainability, Geberit has launched a new innovation that ensures its electronically controlled taps are the most energy efficient on the market.Geberit’s electronically controlled taps can now be fitted with a self-sustaining power supply that works independently of mains and battery sources. Suitable for use with the manufacturer’s infra-red taps, the new self-sustaining power supply has been designed for use in washrooms with a large volume of users per day, helping commercial premises such as pubs, restaurants and hospitals effortlessly fulfill their green credentials.

Mounted directly on the angle stop valve of the fresh water pipe, a tiny generator uses the pressure of the water in the pipe to generate electricity. This electricity is then stored in a rechargeable battery that is used to power the tap.

Two versions of the self-sustaining power supply are available – one without a mixer and the other with a below-deck mixer.

The lifetime of the product is not influenced by intermittent use, making it perfectly poised for use in the commercial washroom, while no additional back up is required as the battery is built to last around 10 years in a working bathroom. Back up is available should it ever be needed in the shape of a battery charger and analysis tool, which not only recharges the control units to 100 per cent power within five hours, but can also be used to analyse the function of the generator, the control unit and the tap itself.

All in all, Geberit’s new self sustaining power supply is the ideal choice for buildings that need to follow strict ecological guidelines.

Budget and Mid Market Hotels Show Most Potential for Growth In Africa

150 150 Daniel Fountain

Budget and Mid Market Hotels represent a huge opportunity for growth in Africa as hotel brands look to expand, as almost all of the internationally flagged hotels in Africa are of a luxury standard. This was the key finding at the African Hotel Investment Conference being held on the 27th September in Nairobi, Kenya on a panel being hosted by Michele de Witt, Managing Director of Horwath HTL South Africa, part of Horwath HTL the world’s largest hospitality consulting network and Chairperson of the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa.Michele was joined on the panel by industry experts Derrek Anderson Vice president of development for central, eastern, and southern Africa at Hilton Worldwide, Ewan Cameron – Chief Executive Officer at Lonrho Hotels, Thorsten Purkus, Vice President Feasibility and Development Finance EMEA at Hyatt International and Rohan Patel – a Director of the Sankara Hotel Group Kenya Limited.

There were other compelling factors as to why the economy segment was a compelling choice for the region, with lower build costs, reduced staff and payroll expenditure and pre-existing global distribution networks already in place. Many well established brands also give a level of comfort to banks and other financial institutions when securing financing, making acquisition of debt easier.

Michele de Witt said, “This market segment represents a tremendous solution to many of the markets in Africa, primary, secondary and on occasion tertiary. Travel in Africa is largely business, NGO, Government/ Embassy related which places downward pressure on rate, which with high development costs make luxury properties a challenge in terms of yielding a return on investment. There is an emergence of a middle class in Africa that will stimulate domestic travel. In addition, many African countries are seeking growth in inbound tourism via regional travel as opposed to foreign [Europe and the Americas] for which a mid-market product would be well suited”.

Hotel development finds life alongside top UK visitor attractions

150 150 Daniel Fountain

The latest Jones Lang LaSalle Hotel Investment Highlights report shows hotel development constricting, with the supply of new bedrooms increasing by only 5.6% of existing stock between 2012-2014. Prior to the downturn and the steep supply of new bedrooms delivered between 2006 and 2008, the changing economic fundamentals following this period have meant activity in hotel investment in Europe has weakened slightly in the first 6 months of 2012 to €3.7 billion when compared to the same period in 2011, is a decrease of 12%.

So what is on store for UK Hotel Development? Chris Moore, National Director Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels commented: “Despite the odds facing the hotel market at the moment, development is still taking place, and more often in unexpected places. Very often, the justification for hotel investment lies in the marriage which occurs when a hotel proposition is blended with other activities and it is the diversity of those activities which are spawning new reasons for building hotel bedrooms.”

In the last year, Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels advised on a number of proposed hotels designed to be run alongside major visitor attractions, such as St George’s Park at Burton, the new educational hub for English football which represents a ground-breaking development of this nature.

Moore said: “Evidence reveals that the ability of a key stakeholder to underwrite a minimum room night guarantee is an innovative route to secure stronger commitments from operators, funders and investors. Adopting those same principles, the University of Manchester and Bruntwood are developing a new 210 bedroom 4-star hotel as a part of the expanding Manchester Business School. Here, a long term room night guarantee has been created to enable the partners to deliver a better quality hotel which will add considerable value to the wider scheme.”

Moore concluded: “The relationship between hotels and the places we like to spend time is evolving and the association is such that partners working together are designing ever more effective and innovative ways of funding, sharing risk and preserving spend that might otherwise be lost outside the boundaries of their estate. When looking closely at the UK hotel development pipeline, improved technology will encourage closer co-operation between hotel owner and brand as cross-billing between different points of sale on diverse sites becomes smoother and more sophisticated. Successful partnerships will allow hotel concepts to be rolled out on both a domestic and global stage and as a result, by combining a hotel with key visitor attractions can bring to life to a facility and infrastructure, turning an attraction into a 24/7 venue.”

The Custom Carpets service offered by Axminster Carpets Commercial allows specifiers and designers to choose from an extensive library of existing carpet patterns or to create bespoke options to suit individual needs. The whole design process from start to finish is conducted in-house to ensure exceptional results to suit a variety of commercial locations.

Simon Mackaness of Rudding Park Hotel explains, “these three function rooms can experience heavy footfall so it was crucial that the new carpet offered high levels of durability as well as a contemporary feel. We are very happy with the final result, as the carpet retains its good looks even after high impact use, and the use of the same design in all three rooms provides flawless consistency throughout. It is easy to clean and maintain, and suits the grand décor of these rooms to perfection.”

In an eight pitch, nine rowconstruction, the woven Axminster carpet is crafted from a high-performance blend of 80% wool and 20% nylon to ensure brilliant colour clarity, resilience and underfoot comfort.
