Case furniture and mirrors offer a reflection of Swiss quality throughout

Daniel Fountain

Swiss bathroom specialist Laufen has re-launched its Case furniture collection to offer high quality drawer fittings, new wood-effect finishes and an extensive range of mirrors.Laufen has created a versatile, practical solution for all situations with its Case furniture and mirror collection. Featuring minimalist lines which are so fitting in the modern bathroom, Case has a timeless look that can be combined with any interior design style, making it a truly versatile option.

The foundation of the Case collection is its vanity units, available in a range of widths from 450mm to 1800mm ensuring there is a storage solution available to suit any space. The vanity units are incredibly simple to securely mount on the wall and are available with either one or two drawers and with doors from a width of 1200mm.

The drawers on the Case vanity unit are fully extendable and feature sturdy metal sides and an integrated soft-close mechanism. A shallow siphon means that no space is wasted on a siphon cut-out in the drawer, so storage can be maximised. The top drawers of the vanity unit have a recessed handle, with the bottom drawers featuring a sleek aluminium handle. An optional hand towel holder can be attached to the side of the unit to add a practical finishing touch.

The collection also includes a medium cabinet and a tall cabinet with two or four glass shelves. Case is available in white, limed or anthracite oak graining, while the matt, easy-to-clean surface is scratch, water and UV light resistant making the furniture range extremely durable. The limed and anthracite oak furniture has a distinct 3D texture, so it closely resembles real wood, whilst 38 other colours with a matt varnished finish are available to ensure the furniture will fit seamlessly into any setting.

Laufen’s Case furniture is complemented by an extensive range of mirrors, available in 10 different sizes and with a choice of two light fitments, enabling designers to achieve the optimum lighting solution for the bathroom.

Minimalist and timeless just like the furniture, Case mirrors are the perfect match for any of Laufen’s bathroom collections. By reflecting off the wall at the back of the mirror, a relaxed atmosphere is created, while the matt light fitments at the front of the mirror provide ample illumination for apply make-up or shaving. The mirrors can be fitted with an optional touch-free sensor control, cleverly concealed while offering the very latest in energy-saving technology.

Richmond Brings Classic Elegance with a Contemporary Twist to the New Four Seasons Hotel, Baku

Daniel Fountain

The Four Seasons Hotel, Baku, Azerbaijan is the latest European hotel to open as part of the Four Seasons group and boasts an interior design to the highest quality by London based company, Richmond.Boasting the most spacious guest rooms in Baku, the hotel is positioned prominently on the Caspian waterfront promenade and its striking nine storey classical architecture makes it an unrivalled destination in this dramatically changing city.

The Four Seasons Hotel, Baku takes it inspiration from the Grand Classical Hotels on the French Riviera and this inspiration continues into the interior design of the building. Richmond have created a setting that merges the French Beaux-Arts style with contemporary twists resulting in a environment finished to the highest quality.

The grand public areas are perfectly proportioned, being spacious without becoming intimidating. Richmond’s choice of a neutral colour palette combined with accents of fresh greens, charcoal and ebony makes for a calming and sophisticated ambience. Undulating curves on the furnishings combined with spectacular sculptural bespoke lighting add a touch of drama to the rooms, perfectly suited to this vibrant city.

The Four Seasons Hotel, Baku is host to four dining areas with the décor reflecting the differing environments of each. Zafferano is the hotel’s signature all-day restaurant, named after the Italian word for “saffron,” the spice that grows abundantly in Azerbaijan. Here Richmond continue the drama of the high vaulted ceiling through lavish Italian mosaic flooring decorated with flowers which is echoed by the hand painted panels on the windows. Ornate Murano glass chandeliers hang from gold domed alcoves. The rooftop speciality restaurant, Kaspia is markedly different being themed on ‘fire and ice’ and contemporary in style with a more moody clubby ambiance. Bentley’s Whiskey Bar is very much designed in a refined Gentleman’s Club style. Richmond have selected sumptuous dark furnishings, geometric patterns, a dramatic mirrored bar and stunning bespoke lighting to create a relaxing, intimate feel to the room.

The large spa with a striking indoor pool within a glass-roofed atrium is designed in a more contemporary classic style with relaxing neutral colours and clean simple lines. The facilities including male and female Hammams, speciality treatment rooms and large beauty areas and throughout, as in the rest of the hotel, the choice of lighting design is key to the overall design.

The spacious guestrooms follow the classical French theme but are kept current through the additional of contemporary furniture and fabrics. Again Richmond uses a light colour scheme using subtle textures and patterns to add a sense of refined luxury. Of the 171 guest rooms, including 29 luxury suites and two presidential suites, almost all open to a balcony with views of the Caspian Sea or the Old City and are filled with natural light.

The Four Seasons Hotel, Baku perfectly illustrates the commitment Richmond gives to the sourcing and detailing of interior design projects such as this. By seamlessly blending the classical with the contemporary, Richmond has created a hotel interior that instantly welcomes and relaxes its visitors while crafting the sensation that they are within the highest quality environment.

Roman to the Rescue

Daniel Fountain

Leading UK shower manufacturer, Roman Limited, have once again been called upon by home rescue show, Cowboy Builders, to help out two families in need, and renovate their bathrooms. Roman was first called upon to help a family based in Milton Keynes, who had nowhere to wash themselves. The family had hired and paid a builder to renovate their home and create a downstairs bathroom with disabled access, which would be accessible for the mum – who suffers with a degenerative form of spinal arthritis. Part way through the project the builder walked off with the family’s money and left the home in an unfinished mess.

Roman offers a range of products which allow for easy access, but that aren’t traditional ‘disabled’ products in their design. They are styled for the modern home, but with every user in mind. The company were quick to step in and provided the Cowboy Builders team with their Sculptures Wetroom Corner Panel, their Roman Shield Complete Wetroom Tanking Kit, one of their Thermostatic Multimode Shower Heads and some accessories including a Shower Basket and a Shower Blade.

The products were supplied into Roman retailer, PHS, who is based in Milton Keynes. The Cowboy Builders crew, along with presenter Melinda Messenger paid a visit to the retailer to collect the products and PHS kindly supplied some other bathroom items to complete the project.

Roman also helped out another Cowboy Builders family in Croydon, supplying them with their Orbital Bi-fold Door. This show is due to be aired in January 2013. Roman have worked on a number of bathroom projects with Cowboy Builders, and the designers are very much familiar with the quality of the manufacturers’ products, which keeps them coming back time and again.

Roman are regularly called upon by different home make-over shows and so far this year they have supplied; BBC’s, DIY SOS; Channel 5’s, Half Built House and Channel 4’s, You Deserve this House, as well as Cowboy Builders.

David Osborne, Managing Director at Roman, commented: “We are always very keen to support shows such as Cowboy Builders. They do a fantastic job in restoring peoples’ homes after being left in often unliveable conditions after cowboy builders have destroyed them. We have now become a regular supplier for the show, having worked with them now over many years. Because we manufacture all our products in the UK, we are able to work within their tight deadlines and deliver products within a matter of days. No matter what their brief, our diverse product range means we have a showering solution that will work in the space.”

Sleep Tight at the Magdalen Chapter Hotel

Daniel Fountain

Did you know that Naturalmat manufactured all the mattresses for the new Magdalen Chapter Hotel in Exeter? They were made by hand only a few miles away from the hotel at our nearby factory in Topsham, Devon.Chapter Hotels focus on providing guests with a luxurious, inviting and restful experience in thoughtfully designed spaces with high quality furnishings; they saw the mattresses as an important part of that offering and turned to us to supply them with locally sourced handmade organic bedding.

We are pioneers in natural fibre technology and have developed innovative new raw materials such as organic wool, (sourced from West Country farms) cashmere, organic coconut fibre, recycled denim and horsetail hair, all from environmentally conscious sources and all biodegradable.

Magdalen Chapter General Manager Fiona Moores said; “Not only is the product from Naturalmat a truly green product made by a local company but more importantly it is anti-dust mite, anti-bedbug and anti-moth, through a natural treatment of essential oil extracts of lemon, eucalyptus and lavender. They are also incredibly comfortable; the sustainable material greatly enhances the ventilation and spring of the mattress.”

In case you didn’t know Naturalmat was founded in 2000 in Topsham in Devon, by Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall, who as keen sailors both became frustrated with the poor quality of synthetic mattresses found on boats. They looked for an alternative and found natural fibres to be a more superior substitute for boating and quickly developed a business making mattresses. They then developed a natural offering for babies, then adults and in 2011 began exporting internationally to some of the world’s best hotels.

“Sustainability is a buzz word in this market at the moment and those products and businesses that can prove their eco credentials and have a genuinely sustainable business model are in high demand’, said Director of Naturalmat, Peter Tindall. “A fully green and eco mattress made entirely from sustainable raw materials is a necessary item for the hotel industry and we are delighted that The Magdalen Chapter has come to us. Superb comfort that is long lasting and consistently good must be a given in any good quality mattress, but it is the attention to extra detail that set a Naturalmat mattress apart and will give guests at this leading Devon hotel one of their best night’s sleep.”

Devon organic mattress company Naturalmat wins contract for Z Hotels

Daniel Fountain

Naturalmat, based in Devon are delighted to have won the contract to manufacturer all 303 organic mattresses for the first three Z Hotels. The first two hotels have already opened Soho and Victoria whilst a third hotel location in Liverpool is in the pipeline. The clever team behind Z Hotels Bev King, Rich Meeham and John Raymond came up with an inventive plan to turn unused office spaces into new small hotels containing about 100 rooms each. The rooms are very reasonably, starting at £85 per night, something very surprising considering the fantastic hotel locations.

The average Z Hotel room consists of a compact space but everything in it is made to a very high standard with top quality fixtures and furnishings. Hotel bookings and check in can be done online.

Z Hotels are very focused on making their projects as sustainable as possible using the most up to date technology to ensure that energy and water consumption is kept to a minimum. With a strong green emphasis, it was inevitable that Z Hotels would turn to organic mattress specialists Naturalmat to help them with their first three projects. The Devon based manufacturer are the official mattress supplier for all three hotels. In total this consists of 93 beds for Z Hotel Soho, 110 for Z Hotel Victoria and about 100 beds for their Liverpool hotel. Z Hotels have also looked to Naturalmat to provide them with organic bedding including Naturalmat’s fantastically designed mattress protectors.

It seems that the demand for a fully green and eco mattress made entirely from sustainable raw materials would be a necessary item for the hotel industry. Superb comfort that is long lasting and consistently good, must be a given in any good quality mattress, but it is the attention to extra details that set a Naturalmat mattress apart.

Naturalmat are pioneers in natural fibre technology and have developed innovative new raw materials such as organic lambswool that is certified by the Soil Association, which is anti-dust mite, anti mosquito and anti-moth through a natural treatment using extracts of lemon, eucalyptus and lavender; and all mattress covers are guaranteed anti bed bug though a treatment of natural geraniol. Another exciting ingredient is organic coir fibre, a derivative of the coconut husk. This sustainable material greatly enhances the ventilation and spring of the mattress and is another example of intelligent use of renewable natural resources. Other sumptuous materials found in a Naturalmat mattress are mohair, cashmere, horsetail hair and natural cottons from environmentally conscious sources and all biodegradable that combine to create a truly green products made by a great British company.

‘Sustainability is a buzz word in this market, at the moment and those products and businesses that can prove their eco credentials and have a genuinely sustainable business model are in high demand’, says Director of Naturalmat, Peter Tindall.

Stay tuned for the next part of the story when Z Hotel Liverpool opens in the near future.

Roman’s Project Award

Daniel Fountain

Leading UK Shower Manufacturer, Roman Limited, has taken home the Gold Award for Marketing at this year’s annual Designer Kitchen and Bathroom Awards, for their new Project Specification Guide. The Project Specification Guide is a brand new idea within the showering market, where a specifier, architect or developer can pick and choose every part of their showering design to create a totally bespoke shower enclosure. The Project Specification Guide was launched by Roman earlier this year, in both a printed brochure format and as a dedicated website which can be found here.

The Project Specification guide gives the designer the opportunity to pick their own feature components, such as the glass, hinges or handle, along with the bracing style, so they can create an enclosure to work aesthetically within their bathroom design. They can also then tailor the footprint, door action, sealing system, profiles and dimensions to practically work in the space.

Roman designed the Guide in response to increasing demand from customers, both inside the UK, as well as their Export Partners around the World, who are more and more frequently looking for something which is totally bespoke for their project. It is specifically aimed at Housebuilders and Hotel, or Condominium Developers, who are working on larger scale projects.

The Marketing Award was a new category to this year’s Designer awards, and it was added in to recognise strong marketing ideas in the kitchen and bathroom industry.

The award comes within a week of the manufacturer being shortlisted for the House Beautiful Best Bathroom Product Award, for their Infinity Shower Trays, which offer stylish level access showering. They were also Highly Commended earlier in the same month by the Northern Design Awards, for their Roman Shield Complete Wetroom Tanking System, which makes installing a wetroom easy – notably this product has already won multiple Awards.

Commercial Director, Julian Pearson and Marketing Manager, Shelley McCormack, attended the glittering awards ceremony, which was held at the Tower of London. The event was hosted by designer, author and television presenter Oliver Heath, who is well known for his urban eco-conscious designs.

David Osborne, Roman’s Managing Director, commented: “We were delighted to receive the Gold Award for our Project Specification Guide at the Designer Kitchen and Bathroom Awards. We have in the past received awards for our Product design, but this year with the new category being introduced, we felt our Project Guide was a clear fit. There is nothing else like this out there in terms of the showering market, but our experience with specifiers has shown there is a real need for this type of service. Often an ‘off-the-shelf’ solution will simply not work in their space. We launched the Guide several months ago and so far it has been very well received. We are already quoting for projects both inside and outside of the UK from the Guide.”

Forbes Group Supplies ME London

Daniel Fountain

Forbes Group is a British supplier of textiles, furniture and equipment to the hospitality industry worldwide. Its customers include international hotel groups and conference centres, blue chip companies, and premium sports venues.Forbes Group is also the European distributor for Forbes Industries (no relation), whose products are internationally recognised in hospitality, particularly in the janitorial and housekeeping context, though its front of house Birdcage Luggage Cart is an industry icon.

Forbes Group has been delighted to help ME London select products for its cutting edge project on the Strand. It has supplied textured black luggage racks that will be in keeping with the sleek monochrome rooms at ME, as well as polished stainless steel posts and ebony velour ropes for public guidance with unobtrusive chic.

Forbes Industries’ trademark brass luggage cart would not have worked in the ME context. Instead, its more contemporary angular brushed steel deluxe cart precisely met the needs of this minimal setting.

Finally, Forbes’ capacious laundry carts will be working hard to support the housekeeping team behind the scenes. Also unseen, its platform luggage carts and hand trucks will be taking the strain off the staff. Should they appear unexpectedly though, either truck’s steel and black carpet finish will not look out of place in this exciting boutique development.

We wish ME the very best with its forthcoming launch.

“We moved from having one retail shop to supplying Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and other top name retailers. The Chelsom of today is completely contract-oriented, supplying lighting to the leading hotels and cruise ships of the world.

This milestone year has culminated in Chelsom attaining a sales presence across the globe with a strong network of agents in America, a permanent base in the Middle East, agents across Europe and a manned office in Hong Kong to deal with all Asian enquiries.”

Hillswood Furniture Completes Refurbishment at La Capanna Restaurant

Daniel Fountain

Proving there is nothing more important than a trusted supplier, Hillswood Furniture has once again been chosen to furnish the La Capanna Restaurant in Cobham, Surrey.Having first furnished the restaurant when it opened over 35 years ago, this is the fifth time Hillswood have been awarded the contract. Speaking to the owner of La Capanna Restaurant, Nick Cowdry comments: “Hillswood Group offers a reliable service and a good price… they deliver on time too which is often hard to come by in other companies. These latest chairs were imported from Italy and we’re very pleased with the results.”

These chairs are constructed, as all Hillswood’s chairs are, from solid beech and were specially polished to match the existing scheme.

This Newport design chair is from our successful Montbel collection and is normally upholstered with two contrasting fabrics; one fabric on the seat and inside back, and the second fabric is then used for the outside back also the seat and back borders.

In this scheme the chairs are covered in two tone faux suede from our Warwick fabrics range. Although the chairs are contemporary in design they sit very well in this well established quality restaurant.

Bright botanical carpets for the Royal Berkshire hotel

Daniel Fountain

An array of eye-catching bespoke carpets from Lano Flooring Solutions now covers just under 800m2 of the prestigious Royal Berkshire hotel in Ascot, adding vibrant style to what was once the family home of relatives of Sir Winston Churchill.Devised by Monia Allegretti, Italian architect and interior designer for the Exclusive Hotels group, the new Walk of Fame axminster carpets showcase the diverse design capability of Lano Flooring Solutions and add distinct character to individual locations within the Royal Berkshire.

A damask design in a mix of mauve and yellow covers 200m2 of the main ground floor corridor and staircase, with a coordinating 12m2 rug specially made for the reception area. 230m2 of carpet in a rich shade of brown adorns the main bar and lounge, featuring a contemporary floral pattern with large petals and clusters of colour centred in the middle of each flower. This striking design places a modern spin on traditional flowery carpets. An abstract botanical vine leaf motif in shades of yellow and green covers 80m2 of the meeting room corridors, and 250m2 of carpet with a geometric circular design in different colours can be found in all five of the hotel’s meeting rooms, offering a coordinated yet individual look. A striking yellow and green carpet also bridges the area between the reception and the WC.

As Monia Allegretti explains, “our hotels are defined by bright, bold interior decoration contrasted with traditional, period exterior architecture. The Royal Berkshire is no exception; originally built for the Churchill family, my main focus when designing the carpets was to ensure that they reflected the hotel’s diverse heritage but also injected something fresh and new. Each carpet design also aims to bring the beauty of the hotel’s surrounding gardens inside the building.

“I approached the team at Lano Flooring Solutions because no matter how complex my ideas, they always deliver brilliant results. For this project, they offered the highest levels of service and design flexibility, and were extremely accommodating for both the larger quantities of carpet as well as the smaller areas. We are very pleased with the final look and have plans to work with Lano Flooring Solutions again to create carpet for further areas of the hotel.”

Lano Flooring Solutions offered an unprecedented service to the Royal Berkshire, meeting the demands for several different designs. In the meeting rooms, for example, each carpet is the same bespoke design but in different colourways to allow for ultimate design freedom.

10 row three-ply Axminster carpets in an 80% wool and 20% nylon construction were used in the public and corridor areas for durability, with a nine-row construction used for the meeting rooms.

Company Profile of NaturalMat: From hotel bed to flower bed

Daniel Fountain

Sometimes companies can start by accident. It was an accident of location (Odhams Wharf, Topsham outside Exeter) and history that birthed Naturalmat. Berthed next to the shipyard in his houseboat one of the directors was forced to mull over the nature of mattresses for boats. The company started making custom mattresses for yachts, and realised the quality had to be very high but the sizes were not only non standard but frequently the mattresses had to be shaped to fit the sleeping berths. The two directors, Peter Tindall and Mark Tremlett embarked on a programme of research to find the best materials to make mattresses from – mattresses that had to be pest proof, of any shape or size and fire retardant. At about the same time a personal quest started to find a hypoallergenic baby mattress. One without chemicals, plastics or other potentially damaging materials for a new child. The research was thorough – trips to the East to sort out the best type of coir, sourcing local wool and finding the right collaborators to manufacture locally- even research into wrapping materials to satisfy a personal passion the two had developed in their search to make sure everything in the process was organic. Consciously too they sourced as local as possible to enhance their growing list of green credentials.

Furniture layouts and styles were important to create interesting and cosy corners to sit small groups or couples in the main lounge and a smaller lounge adjoining the main spiral staircase in the castle.

We are delighted to have been involved in the transformation of the castle to 18 individual boutique bedrooms plus a magnificent bridal suite situated on the top floor. The extensive project also included a huge extension to the Castle houses, creating a dining room to house 120 guests, conference room, a further 26 bedrooms. Also within the grounds are 12 superb holiday lodges that have been designed and furnished to the highest standard.

“It was a pleasure working on this project and particularly with a client having such enthusiasm and knowledge of Interior Design and the clever use of modern colours in traditional fabrics, wall coverings and flooring, resulting in a complete enhancement of the historic castle.”

A new star is born – ME London

Daniel Fountain

I spend 25 years in practice trying to make sure the interior layout of hotels worked for our clients, frequently battling with architects whose only concern seemed to be the building. So when I walk into a new hotel that brings gasps of delight from me it is galling to find the interior was done by an architect as well as the exterior. Just lately this has been happening too much for comfort – first with Magdalen Chapter in Exeter and now with the stunning new ME in London’s the Aldwych.

For years no 1 the Aldwych has been the competitor for the Savoy in this area. Both now will have to look to their service to compete with this new boy on the block.
It won’t be to everyone’s taste but Norman Foster’s practise has created an hotel that has given me the most aesthetic excitement I have had from an hotel in ages. Yes Foster – no wonder a hotel representative moaned that this was the most expensive hotel build in Europe in 2012. But boy, do you get what you pay for! Pared down black and white interiors sparkle with a feast of visual delights totally in tune with my own aesthetic. From the showing of my favourite movie playing silently behind the concierge desk (the black and white wonder that is Orson Wells ‘Third Man’) to the black granite reception area this is an hotel that every designer must visit and see.

The visual impact starts with the approach from the Strand. passing the entrance to the Savoy I realised that the white Portland stone tower I was looking at could only be the new hotel. Still obstructed by contractors fencing as the exterior paths etc. are completed, it glowed in the evening light, the Portland stone showing how brilliant other buildings around could be if cleaned. I remember this building as part of the BBC World Service, but it was previously Marconi House and in the early 20th Century it was London’s first radio station (and previously the Gaiety Theatre). The ME London hotel is the very first flagship property in which everything, from the shell of the building to the bathroom fittings, has been designed by Foster + Partners, created by Sir Norman Foster (echoes of the original Arne Jacobsen Royal Hotel in Copenhagen).

Chrysalis Contracts Transform Fleming’s Townhouse, Mayfair

Daniel Fountain

Chrysalis Contracts have been receiving fantastic feedback on the back of their recent refurbishment of The Fleming’s Townhouse, Mayfair.

The iconic property consisting of a luxurious 5*hotel and serviced apartments was completed earlier this year in time to accommodate visitors of the London 2012 Olympics. With a brief to create individually designed rooms to give a luxury home from home feel, the Chrysalis designers paid great attention to the finer details to ensure this was achieved to satisfy even the most discerning guests.

Genevieve Blower, Senior Designer at Chrysalis admits “Although somewhat challenging, it was more than a little enjoyable creating a unique scheme for each room within the 5-storey Townhouse. However in doing this, some twenty one schemes were generated overall so it was important to ensure that they blended together seamlessly to carry consistency throughout the building.”

An elegant, harmonious scheme was chosen for the main whilst ensuring that every room had an identity of its own and was truly boutique in style. The ambience of the main lounge areas was enhanced by using a palette of calming pale blues and taupe alongside stronger tones of gold and burnt amber. These combined with rich dark wood furniture pieces and metallic accessories formed a stunning timeless aesthetic. Artwork specified included large scale original painted canvas pieces and framed prints such as vintage maps of London and iconic city landmarks to re-enforce the hotel’s heritage. The bedrooms offer a collection of various finishes, some with a more mature palette of sage green and claret with dark wenge wood finishes and others with rich royal blues and mellow gold tones.

Using an eclectic mix of classical furniture, decorative objects, bespoke embroideries, textured rugs and original commissioned artwork, a luxuriously refined scheme was created whilst also giving the impression that the individual pieces could have been accumulated over time – as would be the case in your own home.

Genevieve added “It’s always nice to work on a highly publicised project such as Fleming’s Townhouse. With the great comments and feedback we have been receiving over the past couple of months, it’s overwhelming to know we have made such a positive impact on one of London’s oldest hotels.”

The Bell Inn – Ticehurst

Daniel Fountain

Fabrics & Papers were delighted to be asked to supply the refurbishment of The Bell Inn, Ticehurst. Our vast range of products on onsite and our ability to satisfy a wide range of look and feels, with one point of contact rather than having to manage a number of different relationships, was key to the success of our partnership. The interiors at the newly opened Bell Inn, Ticehurst, East Sussex are truly eclectic.
Designer, Richard Brett, drew inspiration from the pub, local history, gossip and folklore in and around Ticehurst, and its local people. Offering charming, individually styled rooms, there are quirky touches throughout the building and the rooms contain traditional, unique, and inventive features. Richard has created a respectful but playful celebration of history.

Timorous Beasties Barbarini Bee wallpaper from our boutique collections was used in the ball room.

Woodford Plaid from Sanderson and Calder Check from Lewis and Wood were used for bespoke upholstery pieces and soft furnishings.

Love Lettersa collage design wallpaper in parchmentby Andrew Martin adorned one of the cosy areas.

Deer Damask by Barneby Gates, a deep raspberry red wallpaper with gold stag head and antlers with thistle design was also chosen.

Another Barneby Gates paper, This Other Eden Wallpaper a Collage of old sepia photos on gold depicting Britain in the last century was selected for its historic feel.

Roman Makes Headline News

Daniel Fountain

Leading UK Shower Manufacturer, Roman Limited, have made headline news by being interviewed live on the BBC News channel, to give their response on the GDP figures, on the day they were announced, and the company used the opportunity to publicly back the Made in Britain Campaign.

The company were part of a series of four interviews which took place across the Business Park on which they are based. Their Chairman and founder, Gerry Osborne, was interviewed by BBC News reporter, Nick Ravenscroft, who was interested to hear about the contract side of the business, along with the company’s involvement in the Made in Britain Campaign.

Although the GDP figures indicated a drop in the Construction Industry, Gerry was quick to point out that this figure includes public sector projects and that the private housebuild sector, has been much more positive throughout 2012. As a key supplier into new build residential projects, Roman has seen this sector starting to develop again.

Gerry then went to talk about Roman’s involvement with the Made in Britain campaign, which was launched in 2011 by Stoves UK. Roman were one of the early backers of the campaign, which now has the support of 600 businesses.

Gerry commented in the interview: “We’ve had the euphoria of the Olympics. I think that was a great thing for Great Britain, and I think that now what needs to happen is the population, the Government, the opposition, the unions, we all need to get behind Made in Great Britain. Because that’s what’s important. It was a movement that began over 12 months ago and there are now 600 supporters for that, but I think we need 50 million participants for that too.”

Roman were pleased to have the opportunity to be involved in the interviews, and give the point of view of a manufacturing business. Gerry comments: “We were delighted to find out that Newton Aycliffe was set to be a location for a series of interviews about the economy and the GDP figures. It’s great that our region, and specifically our local area, along with the bathroom industry, was given a voice on a national level. The interview was a fantastic opportunity to talk about the Made in Britain campaign on a national level, and to put it into the spotlight. We were keen to highlight just how vital manufacturing in the UK is, and how important it is for the end user to buy British.”

Original Furniture Collections for Hotels from Morgan

Daniel Fountain

Morgan, the design-led British manufacturer of contract furniture, is once again exhibiting at Sleep, 21-22nd November, at the Business Design Centre in Islington.

With a wealth of experience developed over several years, Morgan has specialist knowledge of the hotel sector making the Sleep event an important and regular fixture in their exhibition calendar. Led by Design Director, Katerina Zachariades, the Morgan design team always plans significant new launches in time for the show and this year is no exception. A new modular sofa collection as well as a new dining chair will be unveiled on their Stand M23C.

Last year the design team celebrated strong success with both the Metro and Oslo Collections. Bold and contemporary, the Metro chairs feature one-piece upholstery with button back detail, a separate timber base and optional timber arms. The result is a striking and comfortable chair that combines beautifully with the existing Lima, Soho and Manhattan collections to create an interior that is contemporary with echoes of mid century style. A matching sofa was added to the collection earlier this year.

Oslo is a lounge and dining collection with a light design. Chairs feature an elegant oak skeleton with simple drop seat and back pads. Modern manufacturing techniques have been used to achieve a hand-crafted look. These timber chairs complement any of Morgan’s existing upholstered products and new collection of tables.

Proving increasingly popular for reception areas is Manhattan, a modular seating system designed by Katerina Zachariades. Modular chairs and sofas with low or high backs feature timber or metal legs and optional armrests which are generously wide so perfect for a magazine or perching a cup of tea. Manhattan represents the ultimate in versatility as it can be produced as a single chair through to long runs of sofas and corner units to seat any number of guests.

New for 2012 The European Hotel Design Conference is launched!

Daniel Fountain

The European Hotel Design Conference (EHDC) is the new name for the conference which runs alongside the well-established Sleep Event exhibition. The two-day conference will provide hotel project team leaders with a unique opportunity to gather information, network and discuss the issues connected to the design, operation and development of hotels. Now in its eighth year, the EHDC has grown to become Europe’s leading conference dedicated to hotel built environments. It features leading architects, clients from major chains and independent operators, interior designers, developers, financiers and engineers. Delivered in a mixed format, the conference will include keynote speeches, panel debates and round-table discussions.

EHDC is hosted and moderated by two expert observers of the hotel industry – Guy Dittrich, contributor to several hotel media sources including Sleeper magazine, and Andrew Sangster, editor of Hotel Analyst.

Day one of the conference has an accent on design with two major names from the industry delivering keynote speeches – Richard Seymour, Design Director at Seymour Powell and Tara Bernerd , CEO of Tara Bernerd & Partners. Seymour is one of the UK’s leading product designers and featured in the Channel 4 series Better by Design with his business partner Dick Powell. Bernerd is an experienced design consultant, working with many high-profile consumer and luxury brands such as Dulux and Aspinalls.

The Sleep Hotel is always a major talking point of the event and this year four teams headed up by Una Barac of Scott Brownrigg, Nir Gilad of Nous Design, Paulo Ribeiro of Bisset Adams and Yasmine Mahmoudieh will present their 5 star-rated rooms to a panel of hotelier and architect judges.

Day two has an interactive feel with a series of round-table debates and panel discussions. First introduced last year, the round-tables proved to be a great success and will be introduced by Daniel Englender, Managing Director of Benjamin West. The atmosphere is informal and friendly with no holds barred discussions expected! The second half of EHDC also has a distinctly international flavour, featuring speakers such as Christoph Hoffmann of 25hours Hotels, and Paul Janmaat of Qbic Hotels.

This year the conference taps into a major new trend – the pop up hotel , which will be discussed by design and client experts Jonathan Manser, Suzanne Oxenaar and Claus Sendlinger.

While EHDC gives a platform to designers and architects, it also deals with the practical and business considerations of hotel development, delving deep into often-neglected areas such as back-of-house staff areas, which will be discussed by Michael Gray, General Manager at Hyatt and Ramsay Ritchie, Associate Director at ReardonSmith. Successful hotel development often involves smart asset management so a key round-table debate explores building conversions, featuring Robert Shepherd of Intercontinental, Patrick Fitzgibbon of Hilton Worldwide and Andrea Brandenberger of Rezidor.

A wide range of senior project professionals are expected to attend, with contractors, architects, asset managers and clients strongly represented in the audience. The conference will run alongside The Sleep Event Europe exhibition, taking place on 21 – 22 November 2012 at the Business Design Centre, London. Book your place now and save £105 – bookings made before Friday October 5 are at our early bird discounted rate of £380 for a two day pass (normal price £485). Visit HERE to register today.

Miniview: The Drayton Manor Hotel

Daniel Fountain

The Drayton Manor Hotel is located in Tamworth, Staffordshire and sits in the old estate of Drayton Manor Park. Purchased in 1790 by Sir Robert Peel, the Drayton Manor house (built in 1835) no longer exists and the grand house was demolished in 1929 with only the clock tower left standing as a reminder of the park’s relatively short history. The Drayton Manor Theme Park as we know it today started life in 1950 with one restaurant, a tea room, three hand operated rides, six rowing boats and some dodgems with a small zoo opened in 1954. Gradually through the years, more attractions were added and in 2010, work began on the Drayton Manor Park Hotel.

The four-star hotel has recently celebrated its first “birthday” and boasts that, on average, 200 people stay there each night in its 150 rooms. Perhaps it is due to how many of HotelDesigns’ Directory suppliers were involved with the project! The Hospitality Industry World Congress turns Barcelona into the hospitality capital

Daniel Fountain

The Hospitality Industry World Congress (HIWC) was founded with the aim of harnessing the knowledge and expertise of the hospitality industry in the quest for global solutions that help the strategic advancement of the sector. It will bring together the leading world experts on the world accommodation sector. The congress will structured around 5 main themes to analyse the different aspects of the hotel industry.

The aim of the opening “track” of the first edition of the HIWC, “The new paths towards hotel efficiency and profitability”, is to provide professionals with the keys to maximum hotel profits.

The sessions in this track, which will take place on Wednesday 17th October, will focus on four lines of action which are regarded as strategic in the development and management of hotel projects: efficiency in construction projects, contract and facilities; efficiency in purchases; efficiency in sustainability; and efficiency and profitability in service.

Michael Nowlis, Executive Programme Director, London Business School, will give the keynote address of this first session. “The changes in consumer behaviour, hotel design, social media and dynamics of setting prices are fast altering the hotel business and need a new, innovative way of thinking. Past successful business models are not a guarantee of future profitability” says Nowlis “The HIWC will act as a forum in which to examine the change in paradigms that are revolutionising the accommodation sector”, he adds.

Internationalisation, an opportunity for growth
The internationalisation and expansion of companies is one of the most basic and important options if we are to continue growing in a climate such as the current one. The second track of HIWC conferences, “Expansion and internationalisation. Where to go?, will analyse this topic.

How and where to grow is therefore a key element to be taken into account when designing expansion strategy and, in this sense, the second set of conferences incorporates the two main geographical areas that represent most of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China): Asia and Latin America. Carlos Vogeler, Regional Representative for the Americas of the World Tourism Organisation (WTO), will be one of the speakers in this session.

Guests Feedback to Hoteliers That an Uncomfortable Bed Is Simply Unacceptable

Daniel Fountain

For its July 2012 issue, Consumer Reports asked more than 22,000 readers about their stays at 44 US hotel chains. The survey revealed that 27% of respondents had at least one complaint, the most common being uncomfortable hotel beds. It seems that more hotels are getting it wrong than right, but the ones who are doing a good job, certainly are boasting about it. In essence a comfy bed is good for business. In fact 10% of respondents cited a luxurious bed and linens as an important factor in choosing a hotel. Hoteliers need to realise that the most important item within any hotel room is the bed and much more attention should be paid when choosing a mattress. Innovative Devon based mattress manufacturer Naturalmat has the solution to these complaints. Hoteliers should opt for environmentally responsible, organic, handmade and above all comfortable mattresses.Naturalmat are pioneers in natural fibre technology and have developed the perfect natural sleeping environment from creative new raw materials such as Soil Association organic wool (which is anti-dust mite, anti-mosquito and anti-moth, through a natural treatment). All Naturalmat mattress covers which are guaranteed anti-bed bug too. Another exciting component is organic coir fibre. This sustainable material greatly enhances the ventilation and spring of the mattress and is another example of intelligent use of renewable natural resources. Other sumptuous materials found within a Naturalmat mattress are mohair, cashmere, horsetail hair and bamboo from environmentally conscious sources, and all biodegradable that combine to create a truly green products made by a great British company.

In 2011 Naturalmat successfully won the contract to manufacture all 686 mattresses for Yotel New York City, the largest newly opened hotel in New York last year. This year Naturalmat have created all mattresses in the brand new Z Hotel Soho and Z Hotel Victoria, as well as supplying the Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons, Chewton Glen and Cliveden. Previously Naturalmat have worked with other high profile clients including The Connaught, Claridges and several boutique hotels.

’The single most important thing in any hotel room is the bed, and what makes a great bed is a great mattress. The perfect mattress is one that is extremely comfortable, sumptuously supportive, long lasting and consistently good. It is the mattress that will give the hotel guest the definitive ‘wow’ factor. A well made mattress will have high quality natural fillings, be robustly made by hand and offer excellent support, breathability, ventilation and insulation, and ideally offer hypoallergenic benefits as well. The very best mattresses will be all this, manufactured from fully sustainable raw materials, organically sourced where possible and produced by environmentally conscious companies,’ says Peter Tindall, Naturalmat Company Director.

Naturalmat mattresses are available to buy at their London shop at 99 Talbot Road, London W11 2AT. Tel: 020 7985 0474 or look online at www.naturalmathotel.co.uk to see Naturalmat’s full range of hotel mattresses.

Saga Sapphire inspired by the British Seaside

Daniel Fountain

Morgan Furniture, the market-leading British designer and maker of contemporary contract furniture, has provided a wide range of soft seating for the Saga Sapphire cruise ship. Nine inspired collections from Morgan, including some specially-adapted designs, appear on board this latest addition to the Saga fleet providing comfort and ocean-going style for up to 706 passengers. Designed to appeal to more modern tastes, the Saga Sapphire has a fun, quirky feel which was inspired by the British seaside. Young-at-heart travellers can enjoy gourmet fish and chips, traditional sweets and ice cream at the pool-side Beach Club; the top deck 12 features St Andrews crazy golf and Cooper’s bar, named in honour of Tommy Cooper, is complete with red Fez-like lampshades and scatter cushions bearing corny jokes. All bar areas, including Cooper’s, Britannia Lounge and the Aviator’s Bar are decked out in furniture by Morgan. The relaxed Siena tub chair features a flowing, curved profile and simple turned wooden legs, while the Seville wing armchair provides a modern twist to a traditional winged-chair. With the same name as the Long Island seaside resort famous for its historical Summer colonies, Hampton sofas and armchairs set a mood which feels breezy and familiar, but at the same time prestigious and in tune with the modern world. Elegant and with a compact footprint, the timeless styling of Hampton makes it a perfect choice for cruise lines.

Dining is a fundamental part of the cruise experience and, with passengers frequenting the same restaurants on numerous occasions, the seating must be memorable for all the right reasons. Atlantic is one of the most popular dining chairs from Morgan with its sculptured, curved back which makes the chair both comfortable and elegant. The version chosen for the Saga Sapphire also features fully upholstered arms edged with polished wood to match the legs. Upholstered in creamy leather, this original design ensures the height of luxury in the Pole to Pole restaurant which is styled to the theme of different countries from around the world.

Inspired by cruise liners and colonial hotels, the Boston collection looks right at home in The Grill and Verandah. A dining venue where passengers can grab a lighter meal and watch their food being prepared in a state-of-the-art show kitchen, this area demanded a more informal seating style and a seamless transition from inside to outside for those choosing to dine alfresco. Boston and Boston Terrace provide exactly that with their finely crafted wooden frame available in a choice of timbers including Iroko sustainable African hardwood for outdoor models. The design features an attractive finger joint on the arm, which also adds strength, and a woven leather back for the indoor chairs.

Always a hive of activity, The Drawing Room looks out over the ship’s bow and is surrounded by impressive observation windows. The wide variety of seating here mirrors the activities which include reading from the well-stocked library, using computers or iPads, taking part in one of the many classes and lectures, or enjoying a snack from the larder or drink from the bar. With its square, low form, Verona chairs, sofas, daybeds and corner units from Morgan add contemporary style to the space. A specially adapted version was created for Saga with a higher and firmer sit.

Seville winged-chairs and Siena tub chairs feature throughout the space upholstered in tactile and vibrant blue and orange fabrics.

Morgan worked closely throughout this project with RPW Design and Joanna Knight Interiors, who acted on behalf of Saga for the product procurement and project.

Contactless technology set to take off with NFC enabled smartphones

Daniel Fountain

The day is drawing nearer when consumers with NFC enabled smartphones will use their phones in a different way – with paying for goods and retrieving information becoming second nature. With NFC predicted to make the greatest impact in the world of retail, Signbox’s Mark Bartlett, a leading expert on NFC technology, comments on how NFC will transform the retail environment. It’s now widely recognised that the ubiquity and multi-functionality of smartphones positions mobile technology to replace the physical wallet. Mobile payments that use contactless technology are simply an alternative to paying with cash, credit cards and contactless cards. The mobile phone becomes a point of sale wallet replacement – a mobile or digital wallet. Google, Apple and Microsoft have all moved into the market for digital wallets. For now, these technology companies are working with banks and credit card companies to implement mobile payment solutions.

Consumers, and indeed many retailers, could be forgiven for a lack of understanding or confusion about contactless technology, especially with all the global “noise” surrounding the arrival of Near Field Communication, or as it is more commonly known, NFC. It’s NFC that is behind many mobile payment solutions and what is driving the inexorable rise in contactless technology.

Mark Bartlett, whose company Signbox Ltd has pioneered the development of smart posters that incorporate NFC technology, comments, “NFC is unequivocally the breakthrough technology – with NFC we can look ahead to the day in the near future when consumers with NFC enabled smartphones will use their phones in a different way – with paying for goods and retrieving information becoming second nature; leading to a seismic shift in the retail landscape with NFC predicted to make the greatest impact in the world of retail.”

Bartlett says that the tipping point for NFC mobile payments will come in 2015 when there will be a sufficient volume of NFC enabled smartphones, with the forecast being that, worldwide, NFC enabled handset penetration will reach more than 51% or 863 million smartphones. At this time consumers around the world could generate over $50 billion in sales through NFC-based mobile payments.

Bartlett adds, “Basically NFC facilitates data transfer between two ‘devices’ when placed a few centimetres apart – swiped or “tapped”. With NFC there are no services to sign up for. No PINs or passwords to enter. NFC is a wireless technology that enables data exchange or information delivery and communication to occur between any two electronic devices when they are in close proximity of each other. If you tap your NFC enabled device to another NFC enabled device or tap point, like a smart poster or label, you can retrieve almost any kind of data.”

Utilising NFC, campaign managers and retailers can deliver payment options, coupons, loyalty programmes, brand apps, links to join interactive games, product information, social media connections and so on.

“In fact one of the biggest misconceptions is that NFC is just about mobile payments. Yet the focus of the NFC market is actually shifting from payment applications and it is forecast that by 2016 70% of NFC tag shipments will end up being used in marketing and promotional applications,” Bartlett points out.

He adds that store owners and brand custodians can already embed the technology into a variety of marketing collateral such as advertisements, signs, business cards, stickers and smart posters – the latter probably becoming the biggest marketing use of NFC technology.
Bartlett concludes that, “When a smartphone becomes a portable NFC reader, the possibilities really are endless. With NFC the retail landscape will change forever and forward thinking retailers are now making plans to exploit the amazing opportunities presented by this breakthrough technology”.
