Trevira CS at MoOD 2012

Daniel Fountain

With its premium brand Trevira CS, polyester fibre manufacturer Trevira is making its 17th appearance in September this year at the Brussels trade fair for home textiles. A total of 62 Trevira CS partners are among the 210 exhibitors at MoOD, representing, as always, a substantial element in this market segment with their contract collections. The financial crisis in the eurozone continues to present the sector with new challenges, particularly in the important southern European countries with their large base of high quality textile manufacturers. Nonetheless, there are still opportunities for specialties, despite the difficulties. The Trevira CS brand attracts constant interest, as the trademark approval statistics show – the number of approvals rose by almost 8% on last year’s figure. Many Trevira CS fabric manufacturers and suppliers are represented in the growth markets in Asia and the Middle East, with a successful business there. Fibre company Trevira supports its partners in their efforts to increase their business in “made in Europe“ textiles and to raise market awareness. Together with its representatives in these markets, Trevira offers its customers an information and service network.

Joint appearance with partners at trade fair

At this year’s MoOD Trevira is making a joint appearance with its top customers from the yarn and weaving sectors. With 11 weavers from among its Gold and Silver customers participating, the Trevira CS satellite stand in Hall 9 will be a top-class venue. Trevira has attracted some prominent names to MoOD, either returning to the exhibition or making a first appearance there as exhibitors. At the Trevira CS Square are: Création Baumann, Dina Vanelli, Fidivi, Lodetex, Ludvig Svensson, Müller Zell, Pugi, Rohleder, Spandauer Velours, Velours Blafo and Verotex. In the stand decorations trade visitors can find in addition some of the latest creations in Trevira CS from prestigious editors/converters. Of the eleven exhibitors at MoOD Yarns six are also involved in the Trevira CS partner concept of Gold and Silver Customers, some of whom are in Brussels for the first time. Fil Man Made, Hof Garn, Torcitura Lei-Tsu, Torcitura Padana, Selvafil and Torcitura Fibre Sintetiche are displaying yarns for the manufacture of Trevira CS materials. The joint appearance at the trade fair forms part of the Trevira CS Club concept, a further instance of Trevira’s close cooperation with its partners. The Trevira CS Award – now an established tradition at MoOD – is much appreciated by Trevira CS customers, as it is seen in the market as a marker of high value innovation. The prize is awarded for an outstanding new Trevira CS creation from amongst the exhibitors. Winners in the last three years were Dina Vanelli, Lodetex and Bruvatex.

The Club Concept: focussed service and competition of creativity

Following its launch in January, the Trevira CS Club Concept is being expanded during the fourth quarter with an online platform on the Trevira website. Trevira CS partners will be able to register here and find their points score, which provides information on the level in the Club and offers access to the corresponding services. Today the Trevira CS brand not only stands for the flame retardancy function, it also stands for high textile quality and innovative design. Trevira is particularly keen to show its appreciation of its customers’ creativity within the framework of the Trevira CS Club and in the 4th quarter will be announcing a creativity competition. The action, dubbed “Fabric Creativity Competition“, will give every fabric manufacturer and supplier the opportunity to secure additional points with particularly innovative developments – and thus increase their entitlement to service. There will be a reward for each entry. A panel made up of prominent professionals will be the judges and their assessments will take account of various criteria, such as degree of innovation, technical execution, suitability for the contract market and trend setting. On the panel will be: Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk, JOI-Design Hamburg, Prof. Bettina Göttke-Krogmann, Burg Giebichenstein – the Kunsthochschule Halle, together with Natalija Zimmermann, interior designer and stylist, BZ.Bildung-Beratung-Innovation, Leipzig. There are prizes for the 10 best fabrics. They gain extra Club points, are highlighted on the Trevira stand at Heimtextil and will receive some effective publicity. Selection of winners is due to be complete at the end of November.

Demonstrating hotel excellence at Sleep 2012

Daniel Fountain

Following the success of its inaugural outing to the Sleep Event last year, Laufen is delighted to be making a return visit to this leading show for the hotel sector at London’s Business Design Centre from 21 to 22 November 2012. The Swiss manufacturer will have double the space at this year’s event, which in itself is a reflection of its continued commitment to the hotel sector.

Visitor’s to this year’s Sleep Event will find the Laufen stand split in two – with one side showcasing its inspirational Boutique hotel bathrooms, whilst on the other side the latest sanitaryware to enhance public wash spaces will be unveiled.

This will be the first time that the new Palomba Collection 2012 has been seen in the UK and as such it will take centre stage on stand G21. This new collection has been designed with the hotel bathroom firmly in mind, with a feature being a freestanding bathtub, with a high back that is ergonomically sloped and natural lines that mould to the contours of the body to create the last word of bathing comfort.

Offering a truly flexible option, the Collection now also includes new furniture modules. Available in a range of colours and open at the front, the furniture can be stacked, lined up in a row or combined with the range’s medium and tall cabinets.

Also on stand at Sleep 2012 will be Laufen’s award-winning Antero water-saving urinal and the Cinto urinal divider. Designed by Toan Nguyen, the bowl of the Antero urinal, set on a large format base plate, rises organically towards the user. The practical requirements of the hotel environment are met as the Antero features a needs-based electronic control system, which flushes thoroughly yet economically and is available in a mains, battery or flush-mounted version. An integral overflow protection ensures that flushing stops if the outlet is blocked, preventing flooding.

Representatives of the Global Projects Team will be present at Sleep 2012 in London and look forward to welcoming visitors to the stand.

See Laufen on Stand G21 and G23 at Sleep 2012 at the Business Design Centre, London, from Wednesday 21 to Thursday 22 November.

Lavishly elegant style for the ‘new’ Grand Hotel

Daniel Fountain

As an artistic studio, Dawson Design Associates, Inc. approaches each new assignment with the goal to create spaces that provoke passion and engage our guests both intellectually and visually. We want their experience and interaction with the hotel to be both intimate and personal. As a collaborative design team, we strive to push beyond the ordinary to reach the extraordinary. Our vision is to create an experience that provokes strong emotions and lasting memories. Our goal is to open peoples eyes and minds to discovering the surprise and delight of a unique hotel experience. Our interiors are our canvas. The guests, our audience
The lavishly elegant style for the ‘new’ Grand Hotel, built in 1912, was inspired by its rich heritage as the premier athletic club in Minneapolis. Beautifully classic, we felt that this legendary hotel needed to capture the flamboyant glamour and sophisticated flourish of another era. ‘The Grand’ if only due to its name, must surprise and delight in a extravagant manner. Playfully hedonistic, guests are invited to partake and socialize in a stylish rendition of a modern day ‘Gentleman’s Club’ designed to celebrate the exuberance and strength of famous athletes of both past and present. With playful references to both the Romans and Greeks, the interiors are designed to draw guests in to the spectacle of modern day sports and athletes.

With its 50,000 square foot fitness center, the hotel is a Mecca for professional athletes as well as guests focused on fitness, health and wellbeing. The intimate lobby is a fusion of elegance, opulence and luxury, a private and intimate enclave for guests to unwind, relax, and socialize. The rich mohair velvets, leathers, and silks make the spaces a jewel box of Imperial color and texture. The energy and verve, is a contemporary spin on those fashionable VIP cocktail parties held prior to the much anticipated’ main event’ .

Thomas Dudley: Wyndham Grand Hotel

Daniel Fountain

When the prestigious Wyndham Grand Hotel needed to save water and reduce the time taken to service bathrooms, the Turbo 88 Duoflush syphon from Thomas Dudley provided the perfect solution.Opened in 1989, the 5-star Wyndham Grand is London’s only all-suite hotel. It offers 154 suites over eight floors including four penthouse suites and a health and fitness centre.

Boasting 14 conference rooms and underground parking for 1000 cars, the hotel is also extremely popular with business clients.

Saving time and water
Overall, the Wyndham has more than 300 WCs. Given the need to ensure that all suites are available to customers at any given time, maintaining and repairing so many WC cisterns presents a considerable challenge for Chief Engineer Paul Hamilton.

In addition, both the hotel and the Conrad Group to which it belongs are committed to the environment. As such, Paul has the additional objective of reducing the amount of water used by the hotel and its guests.

Serviced in under five minutes
After meeting with Thomas Dudley’s commercial sector specialists, Paul Hamilton decided that the Turbo 88’s combination of serviceability and water efficiency made it the automatic choice for the Hotel.

Firstly, the Turbo 88 incorporates a unique patented 2-part design. Unlike one piece syphons, this enables the Turbo 88’s blue body section to be quickly and easily removed from the cistern whilst the white syphon downleg remains in position. The syphon’s moving parts can then be serviced in a matter of minutes without having to disconnect the water supply and dismantle the cistern.

Paul Hamilton explains, “Like most hotels, we need to make maximum use of our suites. Previously, this has been difficult because when problems have arisen with one piece syphons, we have had to dismantle everything to remove the old syphon. This has resulted in suites being left out of service which costs the hotel money and disappoints customers. With the Turbo, we can complete servicing in less than five minutes which ensures that no suite is ever left out of service”.

Potential savings using the Turbo 88:

* Flush volumes are approximate and depend upon the cistern

Significantly reduced water consumption
The Turbo 88 also comes with Dudley Duoflush. This provides a water-saving reduced flush when the cistern lever is held down or a full flush when it is depressed and released in the normal manner.

The syphon is a proven water-saver and reduced total household water consumption by around 10% in South West Water’s ‘Water Efficiency Trial’. In hotels and other commercial applications, the savings can be even more impressive.

Furthermore, unlike unreliable outlet valves, the Turbo 88 cannot leak and has established an unrivalled track record of reliability, efficiency and quality.

An invaluable addition
According to Paul Hamilton, the Turbo 88 has delivered impressive results since being adopted as the Hotel’s syphon of choice.

Paul added “we started fitting Turbo 88 syphons as standard in February 2009 and it has since proven invaluable. It is 6/7/9 litre convertible and so can be used in most concealed and exposed cisterns. It takes us less than 5 minutes to service and is clearly helping us to save water. We’ve certainly been impressed and will continue using it in the future.”

Manufactured in the UK, the Turbo 88 and its spares are readily available.

The Turbo 88 is also Water Technology List registered, enabling hotels and other businesses to offset 100% of their investment, including installation costs, against tax.

The Turbo 88 is WRAS approved and can be installed with confidence.

Thomas Dudley’s market-leading range of water-saving bathroom products also includes the Vantage concealed cistern providing 6/4 or 4/2.6 litre dualflush and the 6/4 litre dualflush Miniflo that can be easily converted to provide 5/3 or 4/2.6 litre flushing.

In addition, Dudley lever operated concealed and exposed cisterns are supplied with a water-saving Dudley Duoflush syphon as standard.

The 6/4 litre Dudley Niagara provides the perfect replacement for most flushing valves.

Chelsom goes to a third dimension

Daniel Fountain

As the demand for virtual reality in drawings increases, especially in the cruise ship sector, Chelsom continues to invest heavily in interactive 3D design technology, further strengthening its position as a market leader in the field of hospitality lighting design and bespoke manufacture. To offer clients a fully integrated design service, a dedicated skilled technical project team has been created at the Chelsom head office. Through the use of e-drawings, sent electronically to clients worldwide, all parties working on a project have the chance to view designs on screen and make comments and amendments on the actual drawing which is automatically updated, revised and renumbered.

The visual language of the 3D drawings is understood worldwide, giving less chance for misinterpretation and error. Detailed views can be shown of any area of the fitting and the model can be rotated around 360 degrees in any direction. The use of 3D technology takes out all the guesswork out of viewing complicated design proposals, as the client can see the proposed product in much finer detail. Errors and design modification requirements are caught early rather than after samples have been made.

The benefits of 3D modelling are vast; the images are more realistic, with the addition of colour, texture and lighting effects; the virtual product can be displayed against a specific background, an in-situ backdrop, or dropped into a 3D model of a building; manufacturing timescales can be drastically reduced as conventional sampling is no longer required.

Said Bob Neville, Operations Director, “Chelsom is a major supplier to the worldwide cruise industry. Some of the feature luminaires we are quoting for are spectacular in terms of design and enormous in scale, so this technology really puts us ahead of the game.”

Stylematters Completes New Luxury Development for Daffodil Hotel By The Lake in Grasmere

Daniel Fountain

Stylematters, who are renowned for designing and manufacturing high quality contract furniture to many of the leading names in the UK hospitality and leisure sectors, have just completed a major project involving over 500 bespoke items within a five week period for the new 4 star Daffodil Hotel By The Lake in Grasmere.Following an extensive three year refurbishment, the doors have finally opened on the beautiful lakeside development which has more than doubled in size and now includes 78 bedrooms with 13 luxury suites, two function rooms, a restaurant, bar, 10-metre hydrotherapy room and three spa treatment rooms.

Working with Head Designer, Paul Sawford of In 4 Design, Stylematters pulled out all the stops to deliver and install all 500 items in just over a month from the order being placed. It represented a major challenge for the factory team at Stylematters during a very busy period but as Stylematters, Chief Executive, Jim Barton commented; “This was a very prestigious project and we are fortunate to have a team of highly skilled and dedicated people who are always able to rise to a challenge to meet our customers’ requirements”

Stylematters were involved in the complete fit out of the bedroom and dining areas with the superb Micha dining chairs chosen for the restaurant together with matching arm chairs which went in to the bedrooms. This was complemented by the stylish CAB sofa range consisting of bespoke sofas with two single beds built into the frames. The sofas, in Sunbury fabrics, were also chosen to enhance the main lounge and common areas throughout the hotel.

Set in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK, the hotel (formerly known as the Waterside Hotel) was originally built in 1855, and after this major re-development the hotel is now twice the size of anything else in Grasmere, with almost all the bedrooms facing out over the lake or fells in Grasmere. Commented Owner, Mark Brady “We’re confident we’ve created something really special here”.

Lugo Group Europe partner with the BCFA to sponsor New Designer’s Award

Daniel Fountain

Having been a member of the British Contract Furnishing Association (BCFA) since 2003, Lugo Group Europe was invited to partner with the BCFA in sponsorship of the award for best furniture designer in this year’s prestigious New Designers Awards which was held at the Business Design Centre in Islington in July. New Designers 2012 celebrates 27 years as the foremost graduate design show, presenting the very best graduate designers from the class of 2012 with some 3,500 exhibitors from 200 of the UK’s design courses.

The prestigious New Designers Awards were presented by the Internationally acclaimed designer Jay Osgerby from the Barber Osgerby design studio which designed the Olympic torch. These 16 awards, supported by leading brands and organisations from across the creative industries, herald the arrival of especially talented designers and anticipate the start of successful careers.

As a leading manufacturer of hotel furniture, Lugo offered a month’s internship as a prize. During this time the winner would experience working in a commercial design studio alongside other product designers and to see first-hand the manufacturing process of the furniture in the factory.

Amongst stiff opposition, the award was presented to Hugh Leader-Williams a graduate of Loughborough University who designed a very simple family of stools and tables that could be very easily collapsed and stored within a confined footprint which was ideal for homes with limited storage space.

Lugo’s Group Managing Director, Lee Marvin was amongst the team of judges and commented “Rather than the overall clean aesthetic to the product, it was more the manner in which the components related to each other and were simply well engineered to collapse neatly and effortlessly that drew the judging panel’s attention to this particular design”.

Colin Watson, Managing Director for the BCFA went on to say “A simple concept that was well resolved, commercially viable and an original design”.

The awards themselves were followed by a series of focus meetings involving the judges, the BCFA and University Design Faculty Heads to brainstorm ideas on how the communication and co-operation between education and industry might be further improved and what role the BCFA and its membership might take in any such initiatives.

Old County Hall to transform into flagship hotel and spa for Truro

Daniel Fountain

Cornwall Council has this week approved the sale of Old County Hall to St Michael’s Hotel & Spa owner Nigel Carpenter. The sale is subject to a satisfactory planning consent being obtained.Mr Carpenter plans to retain the historic Old County Hall building and restore the distinctive original features of the building, whilst adding luxury and style to create a new four star deluxe flagship spa hotel for Truro and the county.

Much of the ground floor of the building, which will be called The Truro Spa Hotel, is to become a destination spa with eight treatment rooms, a beauty salon, a large hydrotherapy pool with relaxation areas, steam rooms, saunas and a fitness suite, as well as a stylish patisserie and café.

The beautiful old debating chamber will become an 80-seater brasserie with bar and lounges nearby. There will also be extensive meeting, conference and function facilities with new gardens and landscaping .

The Truro Spa Hotel will include approximately 40 bedrooms, including some spectacular suites. The Silcock Suite, named after the building’s architect, will feature lavish lounge space and gaze out across the cathedral and the whole of Truro. There will also be 20 new spacious long stay suites which will be ideal for business people making extended stays or re-locating to the area. There will be car parking for over 60 cars.

The new hotel and spa will create around 100 new jobs for the city and be a significant boost for the local economy. St Michael’s Hotel & Spa uses local suppliers wherever possible and The Truro Spa Hotel will follow the same route. The four star St Michael’s Hotel & Spa was totally refurbished over ten years at a cost of £4.5 million and has won Cornwall Tourism Awards every year for the past five years including “Winner of Winners / Best Hotel of the Year” in 2009.

Owner Nigel Carpenter, who conceived The Truro Spa Hotel, said: “I am delighted and honoured to have the opportunity to convert this wonderful, historic building into a flagship hotel for Truro. It will provide a much needed facility for the city which will help fuel the growth of our capital city. Its location encourages a low carbon footprint with visitors being able to arrive at the main train station, just 200 metres away.

The conversion of Old County Hall to The Truro Spa Hotel will create a public facility, which will allow everyone to enjoy the architectural beauty of such an historic building. It will also ensure the building’s conservation for the future. We hope it will become the hub of the city and a meeting place for all.”

Malcolm Bell, Head of Visit Cornwall, said: “The proposed development would be transformational for Truro by providing a signature hotel and focus which has been sadly missing in Truro. Truro has often been seen as a “mini Bath” due to its historic city centre and range of shops and eateries, but unfortunately, we have not had the equivalent of The Royal Bath Hotel to entertain and accommodate high end visitors and key visiting business people, let alone potential investors to Cornwall.”

Neil Scott, BID Manager for Truro added: “The proposed development would be an excellent addition to the ‘Truro mix’, serving as a catalyst for developing the city into a more complete destination for a broad range of potential visitors and clients.”

Old County Hall was originally designed in 1890 by TB Silcock for the County Council and is a grand, Grade II listed building, constructed of local materials. The office space, layout and environment is no longer suited for a modern office environment.

One of Cornwall’s leading architectural practices, Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole, has worked with Nigel Carpenter on the development of the scheme. The practice has designed many iconic buildings for Cornwall and undertaken many conversions of landmark historic buildings. Phil Cole, Partner, said: “We are delighted to be involved in this exciting development.”

The sale of Old County Hall was promoted via a nationally advertised public tender competition. Peter Marsh, Cornwall Council’s Head of Property, commented: “The scheme proposed by St Michael’s Hotel & Spa is very exciting for the future of Truro. We are delighted that the building will come into wider public usage and help fuel growth for the city. It is gratifying that, after a national competition, the building is being awarded to a local company experienced in developing and running high end hotels.”

The Truro Spa Hotel is expected to open its doors in 2014, after the building’s current occupants are re-located to more modern facilities.

Laufen: Making the contemporary timeless with new designer and award-winning products

Daniel Fountain

Laufen is delighted to be working with French designer Toan Nguyen to introduce a new award-winning, water-saving urinal to its product portfolio.

Nguyen, together with his design studio The Toan Nguyen Studio, is renowned for creating products that give the contemporary a timeless shape.Born in Paris in 1969, Nguyen worked for various design studios throughout Europe, including for ten years with Antonio Citterio, before founding his own business in Milan. The multi-disciplinary Toan Nguyen studio specialises in design development in various product sectors, from furniture to technology products.

Together with Laufen, he has developed the innovative, water-saving urinal Antero and the urinal divider Cinto.

Winner of the coveted Red Dot Award 2012 for its innovative and ingenious design, the Swiss bathroom specialist is setting the bar very high with the Antero urinal, which combines good design and ingenious functions. Nguyen has created a unique look that in contrast to conventional urinals is neither shaped like a cone or a cylinder. Instead, the ceramic bowl rises organically towards the user out of a rectangular surface.

The large-format base plate also has a practical purpose as in refurbished facilities it completely covers all traces of previous installations, while fitting on all standard connections.

The flushing rims with small holes – a Laufen patent – on the curve at the top and under the rim of the bowl ensure even, thorough, water-saving flushing of the bowl and rear wall. To ensure the splashguard effective and allows liquids to drain away safely, the rear wall is bevelled and the design of the bowl is deep, with tapering to the front.

Fitted with smart functions to ensure economical usage and low maintenance, Antero is suitable for high-user environments, such as in the hospitality industry, offices, public buildings, shopping centres, cinemas, theatres, stadiums and concert halls.

The urinal features an electronic control system which flushes thoroughly and economically and is available in a mains, battery or flush-mounted version. Depending on the type of use, different flushing volumes between 0.5 and 3 litres can be selected, as well as various flushing intervals. An integral overflow protection ensures that flushing stops if the outlet is blocked, preventing flooding.

The urinal’s ceramic surface is quick and easy to clean and has no awkward nooks and crannies or mounting holes for dirt to gather, while even the siphon of the siphonic urinal has an easy-to-clean ceramic cover.

Antero is complemented by Cinto, a ceramic urinal division which has a concave cut to make it appear weightless. When Antero and Cinto are installed in a row an architectural scenario is created that fits perfectly with the geometry of the space.

What Lies Beneath

Daniel Fountain

In the latest issue of Green Hotelier, Christopher Hunter delves into the world of the hotel mattress to find out what truly lies beneath and why Naturalmat are setting a great example for other manufacturers.

Despite a growing trend towards sustainability in the hospitality industry, there is evidence to show that cheap, environmentally unfriendly mattresses with short life-spans continue to be a popular choice by hotels at both ends of the market. A standard hotel mattress is made from non-renewable resources, produces a large amount of waste, and has a significant carbon cost associated with its production and delivery.

Hoteliers, unsurprisingly, point to price as a key driver in their product selection. Yet in an environmentally-conscious industry that is supposed to be selling sleep above all else, the investment in the bed and its green credentials should be priorities. After all, given their limited lives, cheap options are not only impractical and wasteful, but they usually also represent poor value for money versus longer-lasting eco-friendly alternatives.

The concept of a natural mattress is hardly a new one. Before the market became dominated by synthetic foam and sprung products, you would have found coir, latex and wool in a mattress. Mattresses made with these constituents often last for longer whilst having a smaller carbon footprint than their modern counterparts.

There are a few sustainable mattress manufacturers in the market that make a truly green product. One of the leaders in the UK market is Naturalmat. As the hospitality industry increasingly embraces the environmental agenda, Naturalmat has a strategic opportunity to grow and develop this area of business.

Stuart Harrison, managing director of the Profitable Hotel Company and an ambassador for Naturalmat says, ‘Hotels are constantly searching for that differential to make them stand out form the run of the mill. An ethical green mattress with the added benefit of its ability to defeat bed bugs and bed mites is such a story. As a hotel marketer I would want to promote this on my website. Similarly if you are attempting to differentiate between room types within a hotel then again this works in terms of the product offering.’

Elegant Axminster for Ramside Hall Hotel

Daniel Fountain

Elegant bespoke carpet from Axminster Carpets Commercial now covers the floors of the exclusive Ramside Hall Hotel in Durham, adding a sophisticated flourish to the venue’s lavish ballroom and luxury Pemberton Suite function room.500m² of bespoke Axminster in the best possible quality 8 x 10 row is laid in the ballroom, with 160m2 of another bespoke design in the Pemberton Suite. Van Page Carpet and Flooring Specialists laid both carpets. As Helen Roseberry, Director of Ramside Hall Hotel explains, “both the ballroom and the Pemberton Suite are busy areas with a variety of uses, and the previous carpets, having lasted for 15-20 years, were showing signs of wear. It was therefore imperative that the new carpets chosen offered fantastic levels of durability, while still harmonising with the hotel’s spectacular location and traditional architecture.”

The bespoke carpet that now graces the ballroom is a bold scroll design in a subtle mixture of soft beige and dark chocolate that perfectly complements the pale walls and soft furnishings, and was designed by Helen herself. As Helen explains, “I had a specific colour palette in mind when choosing the carpet for the ballroom in order to create an opulent environment, as this area is used for important formal events such as weddings. I worked closely with the Axminster design team, merging my own designs with their creative talents before choosing the final carpet, which truly does give the ballroom a fresh and modern feel while still retaining a sense of grandeur.”

Interior design company Space ID were chosen by Helen to refurbish the entire Pemberton Suite, a public lounge room that adjoins the main bar area of the hotel. Open for breakfast right through until late at night, when it is used as an area for visitors to relax and converse, the Pemberton Suite has a high footfall and therefore requires resilient carpet. Space ID designed the carpet used here, choosing a contemporary floral design in dark colours that complements the dark brown furniture. Complementing the carpet in the main bar, this bespoke Axminster helps to create the harmonious look that runs throughout the hotel’s interior.

“Both rooms now look stunning,” enthuses Helen. “The Pemberton Suite is arguably the busiest room in the hotel, used from dawn until dusk, and the new carpet gives it an up-to-date look. The patterned nature of both carpets is also something is very appealing – not only because it looks beautiful, but because pattern will also hide the tell-tale signs of wear and tear that are inevitable in busy locations.”

Both bespoke carpets have an 80/20 construction, with the heavy wool content giving the superior levels of durability and resilience that Ramside Hall Hotel requires.

Ramside Hall Hotel is one of the finest luxury hotels in County Durham. Featuring 80 individually decorated bedrooms anda number of deluxe suites, Ramside Hall Hotel is set in beautiful grounds.

Thomas Dudley: Holiday Inn Express, Limehouse

Thomas Dudley’s Electroflo Curve infra-red taps are providing a stylish water and energy saving solution at the Holiday Inn Express, Limehouse.

Located in the heart of London’s Docklands, the hotel boasts 150 bedrooms as well as excellent conferencing facilities and is part of the dynamic and forward thinking Splendid Hotel Group.Stylish looks, impressive results
Dudley Electroflo Curve taps were installed in the hotel’s public washrooms in 2010 as part of an upgrade and in support of the Splendid Hotel Group’s strategy to use energy saving technology.

Lalji Bhura, Group Maintenance Manager explains “when we looked to refurbish the hotel’s public toilets, we wanted to use products that saved water and energy but were also visually appealing. We therefore decided to replace the old tired looking three hole basin taps and the Curve has helped to complete the transformation. In addition, the new taps are clearly helping us save water and reduce operating costs”.

Proven to save water
Electroflo Curve taps combine hygienic touch-free operation with proven water-saving technology. They are activated by a discrete infra-red sensor and shut off when hands are removed from in front of the sensor. Water delivery also stops automatically after 90 seconds, a flow time that can be adjusted.

This saves water by delivering a precise, pre-determined flow of water and also prevents the wastage and potential damage that can occur when traditional taps are left running after use.

Clear benefits
Lalji added “the Curve taps have enhanced the appearance of our public toilets, improved hygiene and are helping us to realise significant water savings. I am delighted with our choice and further installations are planned for the future”.

Potential water savings that can be achieved

“ILBAGNOALESSI One” by Laufen celebrates ten years of pure elegance

Daniel Fountain

10 years after its launch, “ILBAGNOALESSI One” by swiss bathroom manufacturer Laufen, created in collaboration with “Italian design factory” Alessi and designed by Stefano Giovannoni, has become a real bathroom classic. Today’s collection sees the introduction of new ceramic designs and a complete new furniture range as well as brassware. “ILBAGNOALESSI One” by Laufen was launched in 2002 and immediately got a strikingly warm reception from both the public and the media standing out as one of industry’s most innovative design collections. Some of its elements have become real “icons” like the Tam Tam floorstanding washbasin and the drop-shaped WC.

Explaining the idea behind the latest products that complement the range, Giovannoni comments: “I felt a great desire to find out how much potential can still be tapped in this successful collection – and what Laufen is capable of achieving with its state-of-the-art ceramic technology.”

The original “ILBAGNOALESSI One” Laufen collection focused on the appeal of each product, rather than covering a wide range of styles. After almost ten years, this collection has been developed to create new design classics, more sophisticated and more related to contract projects and equipped to address a wide range of specific requirements. The new semi-recessed and counter-top basins are larger than the original ones and brand new products stand out for their strong and innovative design, such as the Tuna basin and a new set of Tam Tams as well as new electronic brassware.

What makes the design of Laufen’s “ILBAGNOALESSI One” so timeless and yet still up-to-date is that from the very beginning the aesthetics of the collection has been characterised by unmistakable shapes with a remarkable identity. Giovannoni explains: “They derive from nature itself and are anchored deeply in the collective subconscious of mankind – like the idea of white stone polished by water. The products do not distinguish themselves by their details, but by their strength, the clarity of their concept and by their primal forms, transmitting a message of purity and expressiveness.

“ILBAGNOALESSI One” can be considered as a timeless archetype, fashionable and yet not following any particular style, like something created by nature itself.”

Hill Cross Supply Olympics 2012

Daniel Fountain

Once more, Hill Cross Furniture is proud to play a part in the London 2012 Olympic Games which commences on the 27th July 2012. Working alongside Penhaligon Event Consultants, Hill Cross has been completing the quick turnaround of various corporate lounge sites. White upholstery and white laminate table tops dominate the theme throughout the lounge venues. Corporate colours of the individual sponsors personalise each separate venue from bold orange polypropylene tub chairs (EDF Energy) to striking green fixed seating (Lloyds TSB).

The EDF Energy lounge has been furnished incorporating 13 meters of straight banquette seating. Each individual section of the seating has been precisely measured and designed lining each join of the seating accurately to each table. The seating is upholstered in a stunning Jasmine white faux leather, matched with the simple Lia side chairs with chrome legs, completed finally with premium white laminate table tops.

Various loose seating furnish the space, from the shapely square frame of the fully upholstered Verona tub chair (Jasmine white, of course) to the cube low stool in a daring and EDF-appropriate ‘paint pot orange’. The ultra modern Gliss tub chair will be also be making a statement in a transparent orange with chrome skids.

Feature seating in a corporate bottle green is spotted through the LLoyds TSB Olympic Lounge. Floating button banquette seating will line the walls of the venue, while a large deep buttoned back to back bench sofa with bolster cushion, a grand 3 meters by 2 meters dominates the centre space of the lounge. Valentina side chairs finish the space upholstered in a vanilla fabric.

Other venues yet to be announced are underway. From arrow head banquette seating booths precisely designed and manufactured using the CNC machine due to their complex shape, to various loose seating in shades of white and chrome, the venues truly are coming together thick and fast in preparation for this huge event.

It is not the first time Hill Cross furniture has supplied furniture for Olympic events. In October 2008, Hill Cross furniture furnished the International Olympic Committee lounge at the winter Olympics in Turin. With the 2012 London Olympics just around the corner we are proud to be part once again of such a prestigious event.

Skantherm – German Log Burners

Daniel Fountain

Encompass are pleased to announce that we will now be acting as the UK distributor for Skantherm.Skantherm are one of Germany’s finest stove manufacturers and a market leader in their field world-wide. Their ranges include varying designs from more contemporary stoves, such as Shaker pictured above and below, to more traditional classical designs which can be viewed on our website.

Models vary in heat output and a colour choice of black, grey or brown is also available for most models.

PICO – SKANTHERM
Designed by Sebastian Buscher for Skantherm, Pico is a 7kw log burning stove with integrated log storage. Pico’s contemporary design is enhanced with three glass sides which allow the warmth of the flickering flame to be enjoyed from anywhere in the room. A striking clean design means Pico is suitable for modern and contemporary spaces. A choice of colours broadens the stove’s versatility.

IVO – SKANTHERM
Skantherm’s Ivo stove was designed by Akantus and has been awarded the Red Dot design award. A 6kw log burning stove with a generously sized burning chamber, Ivo has a softer aesthetic than other Skantherm stoves, lending itself to a wider scope of installations.

SOLO – SKANTHERM
Solo is another Akantus design for Skantherm. This stove is an impressively proportioned 6kw log burner. Solo can either be bought as a standard fixed module or with the option of being rotatable through 60 degrees. Optional heat retention modules also help to improve the efficiency of this stove. Front inlays can optionally be specified in a range of finishes, allowing a certain amount of customisation to suit your requirements.

TRIGO – SKANTHERM
At just over 1.2 meters in height Trigo houses one of the largest burning chambers in the Skantherm collection. The fire place has three glass sides thus opening the flame to three aspects of the space in which it is installed. Another Akantus design for Skantherm, Trigo’s 7kw heat output makes it suitable for larger rooms and the integrated log storage increases its functionality further still.

ZIO – SKANTHERM
Like Solo, Zio can be rotated through 60 degrees in both directions. Although standing taller than some other Skantherm stoves, Zio has an output of 5kw making it ideal for installation in smaller spaces where the focal point simply has to be a roaring flame.

Roman Create an Over Bath Style Statement

Daniel Fountain

Roman, the leading UK shower manufacturer, have further expanded their range of bath screens with an Outward Opening Folding Bath Screen, which joins their popular Orbital range of enclosures and bath screens. The Orbital Outward Opening Bath Screen has been designed to cleverly overcome common space restrictions in hotel bathrooms. It features a fixed panel, at the tap end, which prevents water from leaking out from this commonly weak area. The hinged panel can then be opened outwards for easy access, but it stops at 90° to avoid contact with basins and other bathroom furniture.

The bath screen features 8mm thick glass with minimal framing, for a stylish finish. It is also power shower approved; ensuring the area around the bath will remain splash free for easy cleaning.

The Orbital Bath Screen is supplied with an optional bracing bar, for a totally sturdy finish. It also comes with a bath top aluminium seal and horizontal PVC seals for additional water integrity.

Like all Roman Bath Screens, the Orbital Outward Opening Folding Bath Screen incorporates Roman Ultra Care Pre-coated Glass Protection, to ensure it keeps a lasting sparkle and for easy cleaning. It is also service backed by Roman’s Truelife, Lifetime Guarantee for total peace of mind.

David Osborne, Managing Director at Roman, comments: “Showering over-the-bath is still very much a popular showering solution for many hotels which can often be limited by space, therefore Roman offers a diverse range of bath screens to suit a variety of taste, space, situation and budget requirements. Showering is an essential part of the morning routine and is key part of the hotel bathroom, therefore the addition of the shower over the bath can help overcome space restrictions.

“With the addition of this Outward Folding Bath Screen, Roman now has a bath screen to suit every situation. With our collection of bath screens you can install a stylish, powerful and modern showering facility, which just happens to be over the bath.”

Work Begins On St Stephens Place Leisure Park, Trowbridge

Daniel Fountain

Legal & General Property is pleased to confirm that work has started on site to build St Stephens Place Leisure Park, the first cinema anchored development in Trowbridge for over 20 years.

Last week Leadbitter Group, a Bristol based company, were formally appointed lead contractor for the development and will carry out the regeneration of a long-neglected part of Trowbridge town centre. Work started on site on 6 June 2012, creating over 100 jobs for local tradespeople. Legal & General Property, the firm behind St Stephens Place Leisure Park and owner of the neighbouring Castle Place Shopping Centre, completed contracts in April with ODEON and Premier Inn. The development will provide a new seven-screen ODEON multiplex cinema, a new 80-bed Premier Inn hotel, as well as a range of family restaurants, cafes and bars, 111 new car parking spaces, new landscaped areas of riverside open space, which once completed will create over 200 new ongoing jobs for Trowbridge.

Formerly home to a Tesco store, the site has lain dormant since the mid-1990s. The site will now become a hive of activity – construction will gather in pace over the summer, with a view to St Stephens Place Leisure Park opening for the people of Trowbridge in October 2013.

Ken Taylor, Property Director, ODEON Cinemas, comments:
“ODEON Cinemas is delighted that construction of our cinema at St Stephens Place Trowbridge has started. We know how much local residents have missed a cinema in the town. A start this week means that we will be able to open in time for Autumn 2013.”

Tim Russell, Senior Asset Manager at Legal & General Property, comments:
”With the appointment of contractors we are sending out the strong message that St Stephens Place Leisure Park is happening and happening right now. We are delighted to have delivered on the promise we made to people of Trowbridge that, unlike other schemes that have been suggested for Trowbridge, only to fall by the wayside, we are here to stay.

“We believe in Trowbridge as a vibrant town full of potential with much to offer as the County Town of Wiltshire and we are delivering the cinema and leisure facilities that the people want and deserve. Our development will inject new life into the town centre, which is such an essential part of the identity and vibrancy of any town. I look forward to being here in October 2013 to welcome the people of Trowbridge and beyond into the newly opened St Stephens Place Leisure Park.”

Rob Bradley, Regional Director, Leadbitter Construction, comments:
“Leadbitter Construction is delighted to have been chosen to build the ODEON Cinema, Premier Inn hotel and restaurants at St Stephens Place in Trowbridge. At its peak our construction site will provide over 100 jobs for local tradespeople.”

Nick Brown, from SK Fruits, comments:
“The start of this construction can only be good news for Trowbridge. It’s about time someone did something with the site. The proposed facilities look terrific and will only be of benefit to the local community.”

Tino Pelledri, chairman, Trowbridge County Town Initiative, comments:
“I am in full support of this development, and I’m delighted that construction has begun. I think this development is key to the future of Trowbridge town centre. The town desperately needed this.”

Savills acts as the retained agent on St Stephens Place.

The proposals can be viewed online at www.trowbridgecinema.co.uk and local people can follow the scheme’s progress on Twitter – @StStephensPlace.

Hilton Hotels & Resorts Set to Unveil Landmark Hotel in Wembley

Daniel Fountain

With London in the global spotlight this summer, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, the flagship brand of Hilton Worldwide, prepares to open its latest landmark property, Hilton London Wembley.Situated directly opposite Wembley Stadium – the UK’s largest scheme – and next to Wembley Arena, the hotel opening marks a major milestone in the transformation of Wembley, which aims to turn the area into one of the most thriving parts of the capital and a beacon of sporting, entertainment and architectural excellence.

The new visually stunning 281,650 sq ft, 361-room Hilton London Wembley boasts a number of leading features including 18 suites, a 660-capacity ballroom, 10 state-of-the-art meeting rooms with a Business Centre and boardroom, an Executive Lounge, 200 parking spaces and a LivingWell Health Club with a 12 metre pool, sauna, steam room, whirlpool and 24 hour gym for residents.

The hotel will also offer a spectacular roof bar Sky Bar 9 with space for 150 people through private functions. It is situated on the ninth floor of the hotel with an outdoor roof terrace and views over Wembley Arena and Wembley Way. The hotel will also see a restaurant, aptly named The Association, which can seat up to 280 guests which will feature a modern-British menu.

Adjacent to the Stadium, Quintain has begun construction of a new 280,000 sq ft retail destination – The London Designer Outlet – which will add a fresh dimension to Wembley, bringing high street, designer brands and dynamic restaurant and leisure operators to the heart of the scheme.

John Rogers, vice president operation UK, Hilton Worldwide, said, “Hilton London Wembley is a landmark hotel at the heart of the revitalisation of Wembley which will play a pivotal role in turning the area into a leisure destination of choice. This latest London opening for Hilton Worldwide will increase our presence to more than 30 hotels across the capital and provide a unique and high quality Hilton experience, setting the tone for the future of Wembley.”

Jack Nicholas, general manager, Hilton London Wembley, said, “This is not only a significant hotel for the area of Wembley, which will attract millions of visitors from across the country and beyond but also fantastic gateway to the rest of London. With the West End less than 10 minutes away we anticipate a new breed of savvy guest looking to make the most of how easy it is to get to Wembley, the value against some London hotels and it’s proximity to the rest of the metropolitan area.

“Further, Hilton London Wembley will be a key player in attracting back the much needed conference and events market to the area. With ample facilities to host events and meetings on any scale, Wembley is an attractive destination for business travellers, which is a hub for sport, comedy and music.”

The regeneration of Wembley is central to Brent Council’s aspirations for the borough. Quintain is responsible for London at Wembley regeneration scheme and is transforming 85 acres of former exhibitions lands around Wembley Stadium to create a retail and leisure destination which will deliver people, businesses and economic growth to the heart of Wembley. The main contractor is John Sisk with The Manser Practice as the architect and interior designer for the hotel.

James Saunders, Director of Estates and COO at Quintain said: “The opening of Hilton London Wembley is a significant milestone in bringing people, businesses and economic growth to the heart of Wembley.

“Wembley already attracts 4 million people per year to events at the football stadium and Arena and so the arrival of quality hospitality and conferencing facilities, coupled with other elements of the scheme, namely the London Designer Outlet, will help drive the creation of a new leisure and lifestyle destination which operates 365 days a year and one that is open to local people, day-trippers and tourists.”

The hotel is only minutes from London’s city centre theatre district in the West End and, with its 200 car park spaces on site, is the ideal point to explore greater London and its surroundings such as Windsor Castle, the races at Ascot, a behind the scenes tour of Harry Potter at the Warner Bros. Studio in Watford and historic Oxford.

Original Furniture Collections for Hotel La Tour

Daniel Fountain

Morgan Furniture, the market-leading British designer and maker of contemporary contract furniture, has produced around 560 individual items of original seating and tables for the Hotel La Tour in Birmingham. Opened in Spring 2012, the newly-built 4 star hotel represents a new concept for city centre hotels which exalts modern comfort delivered with classic values and levels of service. With contemporary, luxurious and comfortable as watch words for the design brief, Morgan was appointed to entirely furnish the reception, lounge, bar and dining rooms and provide key items of soft seating for all four categories of guest accommodation.

Led by Design Director, Katerina Zachariades, the in-house design team at Morgan create original, inspired collections with distinctive style, eleven of which were selected for Hotel La Tour. Chevy, City, Seville, Siena, Verona, Opera, Hampton, Trevi, Diva, Pastille and Lima. Morgan was also asked to design some individual products based on their collections. One example is the stunning ultra high back Opera 169 chair which creates eye-catching seating groups in the hotel entrance lobby. The form for this originated from the existing Opera 168AU and keeps the original show wood base and flared arm detail. The chair back was extended in height to a towering 1460mm with a vertical button detail. When positioned on bespoke rugs, these chairs provide an elegant and dramatic welcome. The Opera chairs are teamed with oval coffee tables from the Trevi collection.

Also bespoke, are the extended length Hampton sofas with vibrant red bolster cushions which act as informal dividers and provide a chic and original alternative to banquette seating. The Hampton seating collection with its contemporary profile and timeless detailing is a perfect partner for the brand personality of Hotel La Tour and thus, features throughout the communal areas in various forms: as armchairs, armless side chairs, two-seater sofas and modular combinations.

Miniview: CitizenM Bankside; London, UK

Daniel Fountain

July 4th marked the opening of the CitizenM Bankside, the first property in London for the Dutch hotel group and the second property in the UK. With three more planned for London, the group are confident that their concept of “affordable luxury for the people” will be a big hit for travellers looking to stay in the capital for a competitive rate. Rates are between £99 and £199 per night, even during the Olympic Games period. The hotel is targeted on the tech-savvy business market with its self-service check-in terminals, meeting rooms and Samsung tablets in guest rooms, but will also attract the bohemian traveller with its positioning so close to the Tate Modern Museum and Globe Theatre. The interior design heavily focuses on modern artwork with the public spaces brimming with sculptures and prints. Indeed the exterior boasts a large sign with “Another world is possible” by Turner Prize-nominated artist, Mark Titchner.

In the ‘lobby’ area, guests are able to purchase the art, architecture, photography and fashion books on display or order them from tablets positioned nearby from Amsterdam bookstore, MENDO. This also adds another revenue stream for the group as competition for places to eat in London has always been fierce and the canteen-style set up in place here might not appeal to all travellers, especially if they’ve had a long trip and want to be waited on.

Amsterdam based interior designers, Concrete are behind the CitizenM Bankside, and the practice is no stranger to London, having completed work on the W London in Leicester Square (see our Miniview of it here). ‘W’ has mirror balls and CitizenM has ceiling lights, both showing the youthfulness of the market they are aimed at with their sparkle and sense of fun (see page two for panoramic image of the ‘lounge’ area).

Miniview: Victorian Interiors in the SS Great Britain

Daniel Fountain

Another slightly oddball Miniview for you. Along with heritage buildings such as Ightham Mote, Eltham Palace or Standen, Britain has much industrial heritage that can be mined, in a pleasurable way, for ideas for new interiors. In a Hilton many years ago we installed a half scale copy of a Sopwith camel (or was it an SE5, memory fades) on the seat backs of a bar inspired by the Biggles books, showing how images of our historic past and its achievements can be used to create interest and excitement in a new interior. SS Great Britain is one of those sources, and its interiors have been restored, by the Trust that looks after it, with loving attention to detail. The history of the ship is a monument to Victorian chutzpah. Designed by Brunel she made the first steam powered screw driven ‘sailing’ across the Atlantic appearing in New York harbour, to the astonishment of the Colonials, in 1845. Metal built, Brunel’s masterpiece was the largest thing afloat and pioneered many metal technologies, her riveted iron structure a dramatic innovation in shipbuilding. Unfortunately after a year or two she was carelessly run aground. Refloated by Brunel she found a new career as a passenger vessel, carrying troops to suppress the Indian Mutiny, troops to the Crimean War and 700 émigrés at a time to Australia in search of their fortunes.

It in this latter guise that the vessel has been restored. She was brought home in 1970 from her abandonment in the Falklands, and now sits in the same dry dock in Bristol in which she was built. Adjacent buildings have been restored to create a facsimile of the quayside that would have surrounded her ‘back in the day’. The ship itself is fascinating in design and construction, but the interiors give a real glimpse into the society of the latter part of the 19th century and the style in which they lived.

Luxurious bathing fit for the Queen . . . or King of the castle

Daniel Fountain

As a venue that prides itself on offering its guests the last word in luxury and indulgence, Bovey Castle Hotel and Spa in Devon has naturally chosen a StoneKAST limestone freestanding bath for one of its individually designed Grand State suites.Looking right at home in Room 60 of the five star hotel located in the heart of Dartmoor’s National Trust Park, the Ovale bath from StoneKAST makes a stunning first impression as guests arrive in their accommodation and offers a luxuriously inviting way to relax after a day spent exploring the Devonshire countryside.

Every item of furniture, art and linen in the hotel’s four Grand State suites has been chosen specifically to complement the luxurious hospitality of these lavish retreats. Offering a bathing experience that is as breathtakingly relaxing as the country estate in which it is situated, StoneKAST’s Ovale bath has a natural beauty and organic elegance that help it blend seamlessly into its surroundings.

Made from recycled and refined limestone composite, the Ovale bath also has superior heat retaining qualities, enabling Bovey Castle’s guests to enjoy a long, hot soak without the hotel itself using up vast amounts of energy.

These practical factors, combined with Ovale’s unquestionable aesthetic appeal are what led the design team at Bovey Castle to specify it for the recent refurbishment project. Natialie Clark-Medina, from the hotel, explains: “During the hotel’s refurbishment, we searched for a statement piece that would be the main feature in a large modern bathroom.

“The individuality and luxurious appeal of the hotel are matched by the design of the StoneKAST Ovale bath, which is modern and beautiful. Even within a period property, the Ovale still looks warm and inviting.”

Luxury and style go hand in hand with new basins

Daniel Fountain

StoneKAST, the leading brand of limestone sanitaryware, has introduced a range of eight new countertop basins; one to match each bath in its collection. Perfect for creating a spa-like retreat in the hotel bathroom, the new basins are manufactured from the same advanced blend of natural limestone and modern resin as StoneKAST’s baths. This not only means that each basin is unique, but also ticks all the boxes in terms of caring for the environment and sustainability too, a key consideration for hotels and other commercial premises in these modern times.

Each new StoneKAST basin is designed to be combined with its matching bath to create a fully co-ordinated look, or can be specified as a stand-alone piece to create a striking focal point, with models to suit both the contemporary and classic setting and sizes to fit any space.

For the smaller bathroom, the Petite basin combines space saving design and effortless style, while Quadrato provides a modern twist in any environment. Reflecting the trend for elegant curves in the contemporary bathroom, the Ovale basin offers a beautiful shape and a luxuriously deep bowl space, while Geo answers the call for geometric styling.

StoneKAST’s Cocoon basin is striking in any setting, whilst the organic shape of the Pebble basin is inspired by nature. Understated in its simplicity is Oasis, which provides infinite harmony in the most prestigious of settings, while for timeless and iconic elegance look no further than the Classic basin.

All of the countertop basins in the StoneKAST collection have a matt finish and no overflow, making them extremely hygienic and simple to clean so they work on a practical level too.

Signbox see uplift in enquiries following award

Daniel Fountain

Signbox has seen an uplift in new business enquiries following their award of Sign Company of the Year at the 2012 Sign & Digital UK Awards – the only recognised award scheme for the UK sign industry. Signbox believe that some of this interest is directly attributable to their achievement of not only holding on to this top honour, having won the award in 2011, but winning three of the eleven 2012 awards available, including two other prestigious awards – Individual Sign Project of the Year and Wide Format Print Project of the Year.Comments about Signbox from the judges for the 2012 Sign & Digital UK Awards included, “A reward for their outstanding work throughout 2011, that has placed this company as the industry benchmark for quality, creativity and service”; “versatility and elegance are the company’s trademarks”, along with, “this is simply what a modern sign company should aspire to become”.

Mark Bartlett, Managing Director of Signbox Ltd, said, “Despite the continuing difficult trading conditions being experienced by UK PLC we have seen a high volume of new business enquiries this year, with sales running ahead of the corresponding period for 2011. To win the industry’s top award for the second year running was a huge honour and we are certain this is part of the reason for the uplift in enquiries – and new business – that we are benefiting from”.

Miniview: Tower Bridge launches new Novotel bedroom design

Daniel Fountain

To be honest I was a bit taken aback when I saw the new design. I was at Novotel Pepys Street, by Tower Bridge, to hear and see the launch of Accor’s Planet 21 green initiative, a drawing together of all the company’s environmental programmes. The Novotel has been totally refurbished as competition in this area of London becomes more intense as multiple openings add new hotels to this prime tourist area.I was given a quick tour of the property by the GM. Told that the new bedroom and bathroom was a model to be rolled out across Novotels everywhere, I was politely disbelieving. I see this development, smart as it is, as a step backwards from previous provision. It may be more stylish, more contemporary, but it moves away from the separate toilet, the separate shower, and the separate soaking tub that Novotel so successfully introduced in their previous ‘NG’ bedroom I checked with the design office, and was assured by Yann Le Cam, the Accor Design Manager, that this is indeed the new iteration.

I double checked through the UK pr and the answer was firm, the shower is back over the bath, the toilet was back in the bathroom. I was told that a door could be added ‘if needed’ which I presume means that in France there will still be a separate toilet enclosure. However despite the smartness of the new design I still think this is a regressive step.

Innovative Mattress Maker Naturalmat Helps to Keep British Manufacturing Industry Alive

Daniel Fountain

Since the 1960s the British manufacturing industry has been in decline. Today many of the key names within this sector choose to import goods rather than maintain a UK workforce. However for some businesses keeping production in Britain is simply a matter of principal as well as a commercial advantage. Mary Portas’ latest campaign, ‘Bottom Line’ is currently helping to boost British clothing industry and keep manufacturing in this country. It seems to be working too because her range a women’s underwear is currently sold out in most of the shops. However in these tough economic times it’s not enough to simply keep British manufacturing for the sake of it, the most crucial point of all is of course is cost. One business in particular is setting an excellent example. Naturalmat make all of their organic mattresses by hand, at their eco friendly purpose built factory in Devon sourcing components locally where possible to drive costs down, whilst maintaining their world class status.Naturalmat believe that people (not machines) will always make a superior and longer lasting product. Instead of investing heavily in industrial mattress making machinery (which would have a large impact on their energy usage) Naturalmat invest in a team of craftsmen, who are dedicated to making the world’s best mattresses. Every stitch and every tufting button is painstakingly created and checked. Using this model Naturalmat know that their mattresses are produced competitively and to a high standard that will provide years of long lasting comfort.

Naturalmat use organic lambswool from certified Soil Association farms within their mattresses. The wool is sourced locally from farms in Devon, Dorset and Somerset. It is processed on the edge of Dartmoor using water from the River Dart, which is recycled back into the river afterwards. Naturalmat then use an extract of essential oils (lavender, lemon and eucalyptus) to make it anti dust mite. Wool is the most efficient natural insulator, constantly helping to regulate temperature and it is also inherently fire retardant, so all Naturalmat tuftings are chemical free.

Local sourcing is only half the story. By being environmentally conscious Naturalmat have also made savings in overheads. Through initiatives such as the installation of solar PV panels on the factory for the factory’s energy, Naturalmat have kept costs low enough to maintain a national and global competitive advantage. Last year Naturalmat successfully won the contract to supply all 670 mattresses for Yotel New York City, testament to their global appeal and a feather in the cap for British manufacturing.

Signbox to take Enlighten to another level

Daniel Fountain

Signbox, winner of the Sign Company of the Year Award for the past two years, has just unveiled a new weatherproof, outdoor version of its groundbreaking Enlighten smart poster range featuring NFC technology. The outdoor version is available in different sizes and can also be incorporated into a purpose-built monolith that is ideal for high footfall areas. The new external versions of Enlighten complement the existing ‘indoor’ range with the same ultra sleek, contemporary styling. Signbox has also taken the opportunity to introduce enhanced fraud prevention technology built into each poster designed to prevent tag diversion, which they say will set the standard for the secure transfer of information between smart posters and NFC enabled smartphones.Enlighten enables a range of tailored and customised messages, including voucher and promotional offers, to be transferred direct to target audiences via their NFC enabled smartphones. Since its launch in October 2011 Enlighten has generated substantial interest in line with the worldwide groundswell towards the adoption of NFC technology.

Mark Bartlett, Managing Director of Signbox, comments, “In the next few years people will use their phones in a different way, with paying for goods and retrieving information or offers from smart posters becoming second nature – an everyday occurrence.

“Enlighten is at the forefront of these developments and will deliver enhanced customer engagement through new proximity marketing and will change the way people interact with the brands and marketing messages that surround them.

“The outdoor, weatherproof version of Enlighten was always part of our plans. More so, we know that consumers must have total trust in the technology. That is why we have invested heavily in our security feature to prevent tag diversion. Following exhaustive testing we are completely satisfied the security of Enlighten cannot be overridden or compromised in any way”.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. Opens Its First Luxury Resort In Japan

Daniel Fountain

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. has opened its first luxury resort in Japan on the tropical island of Okinawa. The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa will pioneer luxury hospitality on an island that has been the secret getaway for generations of Japanese visitors, but remains relatively unexplored by the international luxury traveller.

The Okinawan concept of hospitality or “gusuku,” which translates as “castle” or “guest house,” has been carefully reflected throughout the property to give it a welcoming sense of place. The new Ritz-Carlton resort embodies this spirit through its landscaping and contemporary architectural design, which extensively features the Shurijo face motifs, distinctive red clay roof tiles, white walls and holy water ponds.

The 97 modern guestrooms and two suites of the Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa have balconies or terraces which enjoy sweeping panoramic views that overlook the East China Sea and the Kise Country Club. Inspired by the spectacular scenery of ancient forests, manicured golf courses and the sea, the luxurious resort has been designed to be in harmony with its natural surroundings.

This new hotel presents a host of exquisite sophisticated restaurants and a bar. Restaurants include – Chura-Nuhji, an Italian fine dining restaurant; Kise, a Teppan-yaki restaurant featuring local seafood and renowned Okinawan beef; and Gusuku, an all-day waterside dining experience that serves Japanese, Okinawan and international dishes on its outdoor deck.

Located a short stroll through landscaped gardens is The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA, in its own separate enclave. The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA combines the essence of ancient and modern Chinese, Indian, European and Balinese spa cultures. It uses the luxury ESPA products that harness the best of nature’s essential oils, botanicals and marine supplements. The exquisite collection of treatments represents complete care, personalisation and the ultimate in luxury.

The Spa features four treatment rooms, four dry treatment rooms, outdoor Cabanas offering Shiatsu or Thai massage. It also offers the Heat Experience (Steam Sauna, Jacuzzi hot tubs, Stone Sauna with weathered coral tiles). Two special Retreat Suites are also available (Forest Suite and Ocean Suite) with their own private decks and stone baths. The spa retreat also houses a Nail Studio, Relaxation Room, Indoor Pool, and the fitness centre.

The Spa reception features the use of organic materials in all design points, and the deep forest motif is particularly evident where a display of light creates textural and moving shadows as if under the forest canopy. Views to the ancient Yambaru Forest can be enjoyed from treatment rooms.

Creative thinking from Laufen

Daniel Fountain

The specification of sanitaryware and furniture for the bathroom is unquestionably a crucial element of the overall design of the space but getting it right should not be at the detriment of being creative, according to leading bathroom manufacturer Laufen.“All of our ranges from the top down are the work of designers and architects so they are created with a great deal of empathy and understanding. We want hotel designers to take our products and realise their potential,” comments Laufen’s Manager for Global Projects, Ilker Hussein.

“We provide products that empower designers to push the boundaries in order to make the hotel guest feel enlightened. People want to be challenged and the very best reaction designers can hope for is that guests end their visit thinking ‘I would love to create this look at home’, “What a great idea”. That’s when you know you’ve got it spot on.”

Indeed, much successful creative design in the hotel sector has cascaded down to the domestic bathroom with just a few strong examples of this being wall-hung sanitaryware, wall-hung furniture and wetrooms. The reason for this is simple – because these designs work on many different levels and inspire people to re-create the look in their own homes. “If it’s a good design that works well then people will want to emulate it,” comments Ilker.

Good design cascades upwards too, with the trend for colour in the domestic bathroom now being emulated in the hotel environment. Laufen’s Il BagnoAlessi One sanitaryware, for example, is now available in a warm velvety grey finish as well as the standard white, and our Pro furniture which is available in some 38 different colour options, enabling designers to get really creative.

As well as creativity, the other major consideration for hotel designers is the issue of sustainability – another requirement that is more than met by Laufen. Take, for example, the Il BagnoAlessi One collection first introduced in 2002, with recent additions ensuring it as fresh and contemporary as any award-winning line. Yes, sustainability means opting for low-flush cisterns and water-saving brassware, but just as crucially it is also about how a design looks and ensuring it won’t need replacing in five years’time because it looks dated.

Fameed Khalique announces UK launch of the Heritage Weave collection by Be Inthavong

Daniel Fountain

Fameed Khalique is delighted to announce the UK launch of the Heritage Weave collection by New York textile designer BE INTHAVONG, adding a new dimension to his curated collection of extraordinary materials for the interior design industry. Although much of his life has been spent in the US, Be Inthavong has a profound connection with his South-East Asian roots and is strongly influenced by his rich native culture and heritage. For this remarkable fabric collection he uses a unique technique of weaving leather and silk, created by Inthavong at his family’s silk mill in Vientiane, Laos. Over several extended trips to Laos, Inthavong learnt the painstaking art of traditional Lao silk hand-looming, an indigenous process that has existed for over 500 years.

Inthavong sought to evolve the discipline, taking inspiration from the wealth of high-quality leather goods he was exposed to in the US. He began the painstaking practice of using rare Laotian weaving techniques to take finely cut micro-strips of leather and hand-loom them into silk looms. The silks are 100% naturally dyed using the Laotian craft of organic dyes. The results of the signature leather and silk weaves are breathtaking with the combination of colours, textures, touch, construction, and fluidity of this new material. Inthavong successfully applies Western aesthetics to the historic Lao weaving process to create this collection.

After developing his craft, Inthavong returned to New York and launched Be & D, a designer handbag company whilst strengthening and exploring his design acumen and creativity. In 2008, Be & D was licensed to create handbags for Diane Von Furstenberg, and in 2009 collaborated with fashion designers Doo.ri Chung and Rachel Roy on their New York Fashion Week runway collections. Inthavong left Be & D in 2009 to pursue his passion for creating extraordinary fabrics for interiors, launching the Heritage Weave collection in 2011 and is now available for the first time in the UK from Fameed Khalique.

Sale of iconic hotel in the heart of London’s SW1

Daniel Fountain

The St. Ermin’s hotel in Westminster, has been put to market by global fund manager Angelo Gordon and turn-around specialist and hotel manager Amerimar in a move to capitalise on the increasing investor demand for hotel assets in London. The vacant possession freehold opportunity offers an excellent international branding opportunity in one of the most highly sought after hotel markets in the world. George Nicholas, Executive Vice President at Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels who is managing the sale, said: “London hotels have recorded the highest RevPAR growth of any UK city over the past year underpinned by continued strength in the tourism sector. With 331 luxurious guest rooms, freedom to brand and operate the hotel to a buyer’s liking and situated on just under an acre of freehold land this represents a distinguished and rare investment opportunity.”

Partners Angelo Gordon, Amerimar and Gracemark fully renovated the Grade II listed period building, originally constructed in 1889, to return the hotel to its former glory. The iconic and prestigious St Ermin’s features brick built Dutch gables, baroque and rococo plasterwork with a garden courtyard.

Nicholas concluded: “The St Ermin’s hotel is fantastically located in one of London’s most sought after districts, so we expect there to be a high level of interest in this sale. The hotel is incredibly well connected to the London transport network and shrouded by iconic London Landmarks. The repositioning of the hotel is echoed in the regeneration of the wider St James, Buckingham Gate and Victoria areas. Over £2 billion of investment of new and refurbished office and retail space is due to be completed between 2012 and 2016. This trend, which will augment the existing corporate demand, will continue through the decade as the result of a dramatic master plan which is underway.”

Hypnos Is First UK Bedmaker to Achieve Carbon Neutral

Daniel Fountain

Bed manufacturer of the year* and proud Royal Warrant holder, Hypnos has received further recognition for excellence by being credited the first UK bed makers to achieve the BS PAS 2060 Carbon Neutrality Standard.By working with a management partner, Carbon Footprint Ltd, Hypnos successfully introduced a robust carbon management plan, outlining clear objectives and targets to help reduce and offset carbon emissions, enabling the company to meet the stringent requirements of the Standard.

Through its on-going commitment to excellence in improving its ‘green’ strategy, Hypnos has implemented a number of recycling and sustainability initiatives. This included introducing a new, innovative mattress material called eOlus™ fibre, which is manufactured from recycled plastic bottles and acts as a substitute for synthetic foams. In addition, all timber used in Hypnos’ divans is FSC or PEFC certified, ensuring that it is sourced from sustainable managed forests, reinforcing that Hypnos uses only natural, recyclable and sustainable materials.

Further to this, Hypnos partnered with Tree Appeal with an aim to plant more than 1,000 trees a year across the UK and Uganda; educating children in their local communities on the importance of caring for the environment while helping to offset the CO2 emissions generated by the company’s international business.

Chris Ward, Director of Marketing, Hypnos, comments, “Our company is strongly committed to a range of ecologically-responsible projects as we work continually to reduce our carbon emissions through the adoption of a robust Environmental and Carbon Management Plan.

“We work extremely hard as a company to minimise our carbon emissions and the impact on the environment generated by our business. Our challenge is to consider sustainability, recycling and the environment in everything we do and to demonstrate that we care about the environment we live in.

“We believe that our new Carbon Neutral accreditation will further cement our commitment to designing and manufacturing beautiful, comfortable and sustainable beds that guarantee a great night’s sleep.”

Forbes Group’s the choice of the Hilton Waldorf

Daniel Fountain

Forbes Group’s reputation for furniture, conference cloths, table skirting and equipment that offers immaculate presentation combined with functionality would appear to be confirmed by its latest order from the Hilton Waldorf Hotel on Aldwych, London. The Adelphi Suite of this classic hotel has just undergone an £800,000 refurbishment that demanded respect for the building (parts of which are listed) combined with an upgrade to the highest modern hospitality specifications. The Hilton Waldorf’s order to Forbes for conference cloths and drop covers, table skirting and cocktail table covers reveals a need for impeccable appearance and comfort for those attending meetings and events, combined with, for hotel staff, machine-washable, hard-wearing fabrics, tailor-made to the hotel’s requirements, and all in colours to complement their revised decor.

In addition, the Buffet-Rite heat-resistant table top that caused a stir on the Forbes Group stand at Hotelympia will soon be turning heads in the Hilton Waldorf Adelphi suite. The sleek powder-coated table-top that fits over tables to provide a heat-proof serving surface when required, shrugs off spillages and wipes clean, providing cost-savings in laundry and giving ordinary tables multiple uses. When the Buffet-Rite is used over a stretch Silcra cover, a table transforms into a sculpted serving station for indoor or outdoor use. The virtues of the Buffet-Rite are fast becoming recognised. It is now a standard item in all UK Mercure Hotels and is increasingly a specified item.

Forbes Group’s London Business Manager Damian White worked directly with the hotel management to determine their requirements at the Hilton Waldorf. “We are of course delighted to contribute to this prestigious project,” commented White, “but I am confident that the staff and customers at the Hilton Waldorf will get years of good service and first-class presentation from our products.”

White’s order from the Hilton Waldorf further included carpeted staging, and a podium from the Forbes Industries range (USA) whose products (including luggage and housekeeping carts) Forbes Group now distributes in the UK and Europe.

Design meets technical innovation: Further development of LED luminaires with flexarms

Daniel Fountain

To meet the advanced requirements of their clients Baulmann Leuchten is now launching a new series of LED luminaires with flexarms: new design meets functionality and robustness. The new luminaires are available as tablelamps, floorlamps and wall mounted luminaires. An essential element of the new design is a black fabric tube which increases the stability of the flexarm and prevents damages due to inappropriate handling.

As an option, Baulmann Leuchten does also offer this new range of luminaires with a velvet-finish; the standard colours available in this finish are green, orange and purple.

The new round-shaped base of the tablelamp and floorlamp provides a delicate design with a kind of floating appearance.

By means of new high-quality glass lenses the light-distribution of the LED has been improved impressively.

The Furniture Makers announce awards for excellence in British furniture design

Daniel Fountain

The Design Guild Marks, introduced by The Furniture Makers Company in 2008, recognise and reward excellence in the British design of furniture in volume production. In this fifth year there were a very high number of applications and the design of most of them was exceptional. The judging panel (listed below) had the difficult task of assessing which entries had achieved the now established standard of excellence required from the diverse range of items set out for their inspection.

As explained by Jonathan Hindle, the Founding Chairman of the Design Guild Mark:
“The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers introduced the Design Guild Mark to reward the finest furniture designers working in volume production in Britain and the best of British furniture designers working abroad. The criteria are excellence in four fields – design, the use of materials, manufacture and function. Interestingly it is becoming apparent that by raising awareness of design and British design talent, the industry as a whole seems to be becoming more design led with its customers now able to ‘buy more design for their money’.

Graham Jones, the present chairman, added:
“In the last two years we have seen an increasingly diverse range of entries including furniture for outdoor use as well as inside, for both the retail and the contract markets, for healthcare and education as well as for the office sector. And importantly in this context, an increasing proportion of the entries is reaching the standard of excellence the judges are looking for.”

The judges were:
Sally Bendelow – Marks & Spencer, Jonathan Hindle – KI, Tony Chambers – Wallpaper, Simon Jackson – Gensler, Barbara Chandler – The Evening Standard, Stephan Oberwegner – Max Bentheim, Lee Cheong – University of Portsmouth, Sarah Simmonds – Scott Brownrigg, Sheridan Coakley – SCP, Pernille Stafford – TP Bennett, Sebastian Conran – Sebastian Conran Associates and Jason Wilary-Attew – John Lewis.

All judges with an interest in an entry stood aside when that entry was being discussed

Designers whose entries were awarded Design Guild Marks this year were:
• Simon Burvill – ‘Lizard Lounger’ for Gaze Burvill DGM 48
• David Chipperfield – ‘Piana Chair’ for Alessi, distributed by KI DGM 49

• Zoeftig Design Studio – ‘inFINITE Seating System’ for Zoeftig & Co DGM 74

Barbara Chandler, Photographer, design writer for the London Evening Standard, Design Columnist for Homes & Gardens and a judge for every year of the scheme, said afterwards:
“In this age of cut-backs it is so good to see the Furniture Makers supporting good design in such a positive way. This year, as judges, we interrogated the designers themselves, who had to present their work. This made us all so very proud of British standards of design which, underpinned by our excellent art and design colleges, are acknowledged to be the highest in the world.

It was fascinating to see that the twenty seven recipients of the 2012 Design Guild Marks ranged from the inFINITE airport seating from Zoeftig – technically state-of-the-art, and exported to China! – to more traditional pieces lovingly made, yet in volume production, like the handcrafted Animate Writing Desk designed by David Young.”

Jason Wilary-Attew, Head of Furniture buying for John Lewis, and another of the judges, commented:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the judging, and thought we had some really healthy discussion and debate. It was great to have so many people with truly varied experience, which led to a very rounded judging panel. The quality of entries was very high, and we really benefitted from hearing the designers and the manufacturers of their designs explaining their products.”

Coincidentally a news item from The Furniture Makers not previously announced is that the John Lewis Partnership has undertaken to sponsor the Design Guild Mark for next year and beyond. This support will greatly help the development of the Design Guild Mark as the accolade, the recognition, which all aspiring British furniture designers, whether working in the UK or abroad, would like to achieve.

The Furniture Makers Company is very grateful to John Lewis for its future help and, as every year, to Marks & Spencer for its support of the Design Guild Mark by making both its facilities and its staff available for the judging process.

Axminster standing proud at Orkney hotel

Daniel Fountain

In a high-contrast colourway, the bold Natural Plaid by Axminster Carpets Commercial now makes a splendid statement at Standing Stones Hotel, Orkney, taking pride of place in the reception area and residents’ lounge.Standing Stones Hotel is owned by young couple Linda Johnston and AlanTulloch, who purchased it in July 2010. After seeing advertising by the company in the national media, the couple specifically targeted the wide range offered by Axminster Carpets Commercial. Aiming for a bright, welcoming design that had a country feel, Natural Plaid inCormorant was the ideal choice with its honey base colour and contrasting black plaid pattern. The resulting look completely lifts the reception area and residents’ lounge, creating an inviting and cosy interior that looks fresh and homely. Made from 100% pure new wool, Natural Plaid is suitable for contract commercial and heavy domestic use, making it the ideal partner for Standing Stones Hotel.

Standing Stones Hotel is a beautiful guesthousewith stunning views over Stenness Loch towards the famous World Heritage sites of Standing Stones and the Ring of Brodgar. Linda and Alan came armed with a vision to create a welcoming and modern country retreat that offers visitors total relaxation and reflects the natural beauty of the hotel’s location. The installation of the new Axminster carpet is the first step towards this dream as the couple begin their exciting revamp of the hotel.

As Linda explains, ‘The previous carpet had been in place for 21 years and was starting to show signs of deterioration. It was avery dated, dark design that just did not fit with the new, modern atmosphere that we wanted to create for the hotel. We wanted something light and welcoming, that still retained that all-important traditional country feel and had a high level of durability.”

The soft but bright colours of the Cormorant Natural Plaid provide the lift that the reception area and residents’ lounge needed. The neutral colour palette of the carpet fits in perfectly with the hotel’s existing furniture, and the blackchecks add depth and interest to the room.

“We are incredibly happy with the outcome,” enthuses Linda. “We had a specific look in mind when choosing the new carpet, and Axminster Carpets Commercial have delivered in everyway possible. We are now one step closer to achieving the appearance we want for Standing Stones, and this carpet proves our commitment to updating and transforming the hotel to provide the finest environment for our guests.”

This striking Axminster carpet is one of the first individual touches that Linda and Alan have added to Standing Stones, and with plans to replace all carpet throughout the hotel, it marks the sign of very exciting things to come.

Rendall Furnishings, based on Orkney, fitted the carpet at Standing Stones Hotel, amounting to a total of almost 100 square metres.
