GESSI launches bathroom showers inspired by ’90s Hi-Fi systems

Hi-Fi by Gessi unites design and technology in a contemporary and original collection, perfect for furnishing the bathroom as a room of wellness, beauty and living well, according to the brand philosophy…

With the creativity that distinguishes it, Gessi has created a product to “play” with the water in the search for its rhythm, through a selection system of functions, flow and thermostatic shower mixer that has the aesthetic of a 1990s stereo system.

A bit vintage, a bit futuristic, the new button operated embedded or external Hi-Fi systems are the right compromise between sophisticated technological research, minimalism and functionality. Pressing “play” allows guests to do just that – play, and with the product. Gessi brings its sound, its lightness and vitality to the home-from-home hotel with a pinch of irony that is already a promise of happiness.

The Gessi Hi-Fi System shower columns, with its linear design, overturns the concept of the column, hybridising it with the typical form of the shower panel, but with totally external installation, without embedded elements. The column/panel section, in 4 mm thick glass, like the shelf, is offset from the latter, and contains the thermostatic controls, with a highly sophisticated architectural effect. Available with rainfall, waterfall and directional shower kit functionality, these sculptural wellbeing objects are also equipped with a handshower attacked with a magnetic and variable position system.

In Conversation With: Damien Perrot on defining ibis Hotels’ new design era

800 533 Hamish Kilburn

The world’s most iconic budget hotel brand is undergoing a major redesign following the growing demands of the modern traveller. To understand all the design details of the new generation of ibis Hotels, editor Hamish Kilburn sat down with Damien Perrot, Senior Vice President, Design Solutions for Accor, to find out more about how the new ibis was conceived in three separate designs…

With more than 1,170 economy hotels open worldwide, ibis has become somewhat of a trailblazer in the congested budget sector of the hotel industry. Opening up in neighbourhoods that before the ‘70s may well have not existed for the modern traveller, the company’s aggressive expansion into tier two cities bridged the gap between travellers and the freedom to explore the world while on a budget.

With the aim to ‘shake up budget hotel standards’, the brand, which is known for its basic and standardised design, is now in the process of reinventing itself to become more flexible to cater to a wider demographic. Using interior design as its tool, Ibis’ latest face lift includes new guestrooms, F&B areas and living spaces. “Its transformation is primarily based on customer behaviour and how guests instinctively use the spaces,” said Steven Taylor, Chief Brand Officer at Accor in the official statement from the brand. “Today, the brand is a truly vibrant place where travellers and non-staying and local customers alike can dine, sleep, work and feel welcome.”

Leading the extensive brand renovation is Damien Perrot, Senior Vice President, Design Solutions for Accor. “I wanted to achieve a design that was living, vibrant and real,” he told Hotel Designs. “The objective, in terms of design, is to attract people and allow our guests to have a great experience that will naturally encourage them to return.”

“Perrot launched competitions in America, Asia and Europe in order to garner inspiration from all corners of the world.”

The design, marketing and brand team came together with the ambition to rethink ibis as if it was created today. “The simple fact was that we felt obliged to confront the way in which our guests’ behaviour and lifestyles have changed,” explained Perrot. “Our idea was not to radicalise the form, but instead to create a concept in line with that of the modern travellers’ needs of today.” In order to keep the thoughts open and fresh, Perrot launched design competitions open to all in America, Asia and Europe in order to garner inspiration from all corners of the world. “The brief being light in context around what we wanted was key as we did not want to restrict the designers’ creative flow,” adds Perrot. As a result, the brand was able to handpick the designers who put forward realistic and brand-worthy solutions to the challenge.

Following the competition, the new ibis was to be divided into three concepts drawn up from three separate design studios. Studio Innocad from Europe, Studio FGMF from Latin America and Studio Soda from Asia together were Perrot’s answer to the new generation of ibis hotels.

Studio Innocad – Europe

The concept is a modular, flexible and customisable approach for architecture and interior, for renovation as well as new construction of ibis hotels. Designed around the fluid transition between inside and outside, the different settings of social spaces invite travellers and locals to explore several atmospheres and areas and are importantly not limited to be in one design during their customer journey.

Urban living comes to the heart of the hotels with the design concept from Studio FGMF while the street outside becomes an integral part of the lobby. Unveiling a new pedestrian walkway, the hotel concept is gallery of local inspiration.

Meanwhile, the guestrooms have been imagined to be comfortable in a modern style, featuring a bookshelf as a centrepiece. A functional layout opens up new possibilities for guests to relax in the home-from-home setting.

Studio Soda – Asia

Modern, opening living areas

Flexible, modular and contemporary, the concept that was imagined by Studio Soda is one that offers everything the modern guest is looking for; comfort combined with warmth. The lobby has been specifically designed to welcome the outside world, with a terrace area that extends out onto the street. The result is a public area that is welcome and free for guests to eat, relax, work or play.

“When we are rethinking ‘the new’, it is essential to forget what it is today,” explained Perrot when confronting the challenges of the project. “After the big idea in terms of design, the question is how can we apply that into our existing hotels. That’s a really big challenge, but I think we have succeeded.

Portrait of Damien Perrot

Image caption: Damien Perrot, Senior Vice President, Design Solutions for Accor

“The other challenge is to not be distracted by trends. Each design concept that was accepted stayed true to the DNA of the brand, which is very modern. Throughout the project, I want to demonstrate that modernity is in line with a new way of living.”

With the ambitious plans to redesign all hotels in the ibis portfolio by 2022, the aim is not for all hotels to be identical to one another. Instead, each property is aimed to have its own quirky personality. “Each concept is not 100 per cent defined. But the designer will apply the concept on projects and select different furniture and lighting to suit the hotel,” said Perrot. “In order to be able to roll this out globally, we have to have guidelines and style book. Each document helps the designers to roll out this concept. In those guidelines, we explain the boundaries that can and can’t be broken to achieve the final design of the individual hotel.”

Each hotel to adopt the new design concept will be better equipped and better designed to personalise the overall guest experience. The refreshing, and very different, designed concepts suggest heavily that ibis strongly believe a good hotel experience is much beyond experiencing a good night’s sleep. To achieve that overall home-from-home experience, the brand has redefined its public areas, F&B environment and guestrooms allowing its guests to tailor-make their own travel experience when checking in.

Duravit wins iF DESIGN AWARD for XSquare bathroom furniture range

610 420 Hamish Kilburn

Duravit continues to confirm the success of its innovative bathroom products by winning an iF Design Award…

Duravit was among the winners at this year’s iF DESIGN AWARD; the award went to the XSquare bathroom furniture series, created by Duravit in conjunction with the designer Kurt Merki Jr.

The XSquare furniture range is both impressive and striking, with contemporary, elegant style. The quadrant-shaped chrome profile which edges the furniture emphasizes its characteristic design. On the floor-standing model, the transition from the body of the furniture to the base is absolutely seamless.

The chrome profile accentuates the frame of both floor standing and wall hanging variants and continues around the corner radius of the washbasin, creating harmony and at the same time a distinctly unique touch. The vanity units, mirrors, and mirror-cabinet solutions from the range are also designed with the elegant chrome profile, enabling a luxurious washing area to be created.

Three new, special furniture finishes (Matt Light Blue, Matt Concrete Grey, and Satin-Matt Aubergine) plus the linen décor finish, complete the wide colour palette; there are 28 furniture finishes in décor matt or lacquer; satin-matt or high-gloss are also available.

The console panel is available in one of the cabinet colours or additionally in solid Natural Walnut which creates a variety of completely new and individual colour combinations for XSquare.

Two or even three colours can be used in combination with the lacquer finish, chrome profile and console panel creating new contrasts and high-class designs.

Handle-free fronts with push-to-open technology subtly highlight the elegant and inspiring overall design. The new furniture range has a striking effect, creating clearly structured features in the room.

For 65 years, the iF DESIGN AWARD has been a recognised trademark for outstanding design all over the world. The iF DESIGN AWARD is one of the most prestigious awards in the world. It is awarded once a year by the world’s oldest independent design institution, iF International Forum Design GmbH in Hanover. GROHE unveils universal solution of concealed shower installations

800 577 Hamish Kilburn

GROHE Rapido SmartBox is now compatable with more than 170 different GROHE trim designs…

Since its initial launch in 2017, the GROHE Rapido SmartBox in combination with the SmartControl Concealed trim sets has ensured the easy installation and premium performance of concealed shower systems, helping to support the trend for minimalist interiors in both residential and commercial projects. With its “push, turn, shower” functions, it offers individual and intuitive control combined with a space-saving and slim design.

Now, the Rapido Smartbox can be used as a universal shower solution thanks to its compatibility with more than 170 different GROHE trim designs, offering architects, designers, specifiers and installers freedom of planning and efficient installation when working on projects. Plus, with an installation depth of only 75mm, the GROHE Rapido SmartBox fits into every kind of wall, even particularly narrow ones. Furthermore, its recent successful WRAS accreditation pays testament to its high standards when it comes to compliance with water regulations. The esteemed approval by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme also enables the Rapido Smartbox to be specified by housebuilders for property development.

The Rapido Smartbox now matches perfectly with three different styles of trim set; two-handle thermostats, single-lever mixers and the SmartControl Concealed, all of which are available in an array of colours, finishes, shapes and sizes. All three styles offer varying functionalities, aesthetics and price points, catering for all projects regardless of space, size and budget.

Rapido Smartbox: Efficient, universal installation

The extensive range of trim set designs which allows greater freedom over aesthetic and functionality for customers is made possible by the exciting innovations that lie behind the wall within the Rapido Smartbox. With three outlets, the Rapido Smartbox facilitates a wider range of showering options, for which previously two rough-ins would have been required. This helps to make the complexity of concealed showering more accessible for both installers and customers alike. In addition, the GROHE Rapido SmartBox makes adapters dispensable as it has ½ inch outlets to which all standard tubes can be connected. Designed with easy installation in mind, the Smartbox is equipped with inlets that connect from below, allowing a direct connection to the hot and cold water supply. Therefore the use of 90-degree fittings is eliminated.

This innovative shower mechanism also provides many other benefits for installers including:
• Subsequent adjustment of the trim set by six degrees post-installation to perfectly align with tiles and joints is possible thanks to long holes in the unit.
• Optional service stops for retrofit allow installers to gain complete access over the water supply in just a few steps. During maintenance, each of the Smartcontrol or Smartbox fittings can be closed directly and separately.
• The GROHE Rapido SmartBox can be retrofitted with a safety protection against backflow and meets the EU standard 1717 when installed with an integrated bath-fill and overflow unit.
• Easy on-site installation is made possible thanks to the helpful brass outlets which allow connection to the pipes to be installed with the use of a pipe wrench. This means mounting can be carried out quickly and easily on-site and a bench vice is not necessary.

SmartControl Concealed: Ultra-thin design for additional space in the shower

For bathrooms where space is extremely limited, GROHE offers a particularly “slim” solution: GROHE SmartControl Concealed in combination with the new GROHE Rapido SmartBox. The installation of the behind-the-wall technology combined with the ultra-slim design of the trim which projects just 43 mm from the surface of the wall, creates a minimalist look and gives the feeling of additional space in the shower. SmartControl Concealed is controlled using intuitive push-and-turn technology to individually select the preferred shower spray type and control water volume. Each shower trim, available in a round or square design, can operate up to three functions from head shower to hand shower and bath filler to body jets, for a truly customised shower that meets the demands of each individual bathroom’s needs. In addition, several styles are available: a classic Chrome finish or a discreet, elegant MoonWhite acrylic glass design. The SmartControl shower mixer trim is also available in SuperSteel and Brushed Hard Graphite and as of May 2019, there will be seven other metallic finishes on offer, complete with GROHE’s unique PVD coating which provides long-lasting colour and durability.

Two-handle thermostats: Simple operation delivers precise control

The new two-handle thermostats have been designed to offer convenient temperature and water flow control, using the same iconic visual icons as the SmartControl. They are compact, space-saving and combine precise performance with a slim, minimalist design. GROHE thermostats excel in delivering ease of operation, safety, comfort and above all, a relaxing shower experience. Equipped with leading technology, the GROHE TurboStat thermostat reacts within fractions of a second to pressure and temperature fluctuations. The mixing ratio of cold and hot water is continuously adjusted so that the temperature selected remains constant. Both head shower and hand shower can be controlled by intuitive rotation of the Aquadimmer handle, the upper control on the trim set. Turning the upper control slightly to the left will activate the hand shower, and by simply continuing to turn to the left, the water flow and power of the spray will increase. When the head shower is required, simply switch the control to the right and once again, increase volume by continuing to turn.
The two-handle thermostats are newly available in a slimmer profile, with only 43mm projection from the wall, and are offered in both round and square designs. In addition to the single-function models, models with two functions are now available, with clear pictograms used to indicate head and hand shower or shower and bath filler.

Single-lever mixers: Comfortable and simple operation for unlimited showering pleasure

GROHE single-lever mixers are designed for functionality and offer a stylish, sleek look that will prove popular with consumers. The latest additions to the range now make three-way functionality a reality, where only single and two-way systems were possible before. Users can now choose from three different types of spray pattern using the upper button on the mixer; from a powerful jet spray, to a relaxing rainshower or a practical hand shower. Meanwhile, the lower handle provides comfortable and intuitive temperature and water control. The trim sets, which have been designed to match all GROHE brassware ranges to ensure coordinated design in bathroom projects, are easy to install thanks to GROHE QuickFix, which reduces fitting time by up to 50 per cent.

Chapter Roma to open this spring

800 533 Hamish Kilburn

The 42-key hotel, designed by Tristan Du Plessis of Studio A, will be the first property to open in the newly established Chapter Italia portfolio…

Opening in the vibrant and historic Regola neighborhood of Rome this spring, the 42-room hotel Chapter Roma will create an intimate atmosphere for those checking in. The first location in the newly established Chapter Italia Portfolio developed by Marco Cilia (formerly of Hotel Americano in New York City), Chapter Roma will open in March 2019. The hotel, proudly part of the Design Hotels collection, will act as a catalyst for change for Italian travel by providing something currently unattainable – an accessibility to luxury that is not just saved for five-star hotels.

Embodying a true fusion of gritty and glamorous, with a contemporary and classic aesthetic, South African based designer Tristan Du Plessis of Studio A has breathed new life into the building which dates back to 1880. Chapter Roma’s laidback yet spirited vision in contemporary interiors brings Du Plessis’ signature industrial-chic, sultry style and strong local connection to this ancient cosmopolis. The guest rooms are centered on a few statement pieces in otherwise minimalistic spaces with clever custom-made vanity-cum-storage solutions.

“We wanted to create a design that stood out for its youthfulness whilst still respecting the traditions of the city.” – Tristan Du Plessis of Studio A

A Rome native, Cilia has seen the modern-day city change and develop over time. “We are introducing a new vibe for hospitality in Regola with the opening of Chapter Roma,” he said. “I was born here, and it is important that we put our guests in the Italian state of mind; protecting Rome’s design heritage while celebrating the future with genuine and original design, service, and food and beverage offerings. With Chapter Roma we’re telling the first part of our story, we want to create a place where guests truly feel like they’re living like a local.”

Green bed and wooden flooring

Cilia decided upon Regola due to the area being commemorated with the names of the winding cobblestone streets. Chapter Roma itself is on Via di Santa Maria dei Calderari, or the “street of the blacksmiths,” and Du Plessis has paid tribute to this lineage by using a variety of metals throughout the property. Du Plessis employs elements of raw steel, brass, copper and bronze, adding an industrial touch to an elegant space with high ceilings, herringbone floors, and mid-century Italian furniture. The dramatic setup is rounded off nicely with a palette of dark green and rust and soft-to-the-touch velvets.

“We wanted to create a design that stood out for its youthfulness whilst still respecting the traditions of the city, by using local craftsmen, materials and aesthetics for a large amount of the hotel and collaborated with young local and international artists as well as furniture and lighting manufacturers to imbed a spirit of rebellion throughout the design,” added Plessis. “The age of the building was both inspiring and challenging, but the old walls and ancient layout made sure that each room has a unique footprint which has lent us the opportunity to create varied and interesting room types.”

Inspired by the streets of Rome along with the neighborhood’s cutting-edge galleries and furniture boutiques, a contemporary artwork by CYRCLE, a two-man collective made up of American artists David Leavitt and David Torres, as well as graffiti by local artist Alice Pasquini grace the walls of the Chapter Roma’s lobby bar.

Opening on to Via Santa Maria dei Calderari the bar features Roman arches wrapped in raw steel throughout and will be a hybrid space for work, play, and everything in between. Chapter Roma will also feature an all-organic daytime market, delivering a new kind of accessible luxury to the modern in-the-know traveler and, later on in the year, a signature restaurant.

Kit Kemp Wilton Carpets

Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets receives acclaim since launch

850 587 Daniel Fountain

The Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets collection was launched at a glittering event at London’s The Soho Hotel, named the ‘World’s Most Glamorous Hotel’ by Tatler magazine. Since then the range has enjoyed widespread acclaim, grabbing the attention of leading luxury consumer lifestyle publications and notable influencers from across the interiors industry.

Created by Kit Kemp, design director of Firmdale Hotels PLC and well-known author and art collector, the made-to-order collection features nine exquisite patterns drawing from influences as diverse as folklore, botany and architecture. Kit worked with the Wilton Carpets design team to create a stand-out collection for hospitality environments that is unique and individual. Using traditional axminster or wilton weaves, or incorporating the added texture of a Brussels weave, the collection delivers the finest British wool-rich qualities in bespoke size wall-to-wall carpet and area rugs.

“The designs in the Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets collection truly are extraordinary and we’ve pushed the limits of our design and manufacturing expertise to faithfully interpret the sophisticated, subtle elements of Kit’s original creations,” explains Damian Roscoe, head of creative for Wilton Carpets. “In fact, patterns such as Batik were only possible because of the detail achievable with our robotic Axminster loom; the country’s most advanced. The collection was a joy to develop and shows just what can be achieved when two creative forces collaborate.”

Presented in a luxurious hardback book, the Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets collection has made the difficult transition between a carpet created for hospitality and leisure spaces to one equally at ease in luxury homes. Recognised for this by leading interior journalists, it demonstrates that when good design and carpet craft combine, the results deserve attention. In fact, the Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets collection has already been recognised by English Home magazine in its prestigious ‘New Year Honours’ special edition.

Designs from Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets can now be seen in corridors and rooms at The Soho Hotel. From the stunning Batik used as runner in the reception and By Way as an area rug in the library, to the flexibility of Tweed Fleck demonstrated in one of the impressive Terrace Suites; the carpets reflect the richness of pattern and understanding of colour that is signature Kit Kemp.

Case Study: Brintons at Hotel Walther, Switzerland

999 614 Daniel Fountain

In celebration of its 110th anniversary, the Hotel Walther commissioned Brintons to translate the elaborate designs of interior designer Virginia Maissen into woven Axminster rugs and fitted carpet to complement the refurbishment of the hotel.

The concept of the design was to create a modern, inviting and comfortable feel in this grand hotel with inspiration taken from its surroundings and history. Zürich-based interior designer Virginia Maissen worked with Brintons to redesign the interior to highlight the heritage of the hotel, but also incorporate modern art installations by Rolf Sachs and Sandro Fabbri.

Case Study: Brintons at Hotel Walther, SwitzerlandThe newly refurbished hotel, a member of the Relais & Châteaux group, unveiled its updated design earlier this year. The 17 bespoke carpet designs throughout are bold and abstract, in a colour palette of reds, greens and yellows that reference the hotel’s alpine surroundings.

Brintons collaborated closely with Virginia Maissen to translate her designs into Axminster carpet. The layering of imagery within the designs, mixing bold colours and the subtle photographic representation exploited the full range of the carpet manufacturer’s 32-colour High Definition Weave; a unique Brintons’ innovation that allows for infinite design possibilities and highly dynamic visuals.

The end result is a beautifully detailed collection of bespoke carpets in the lobby, fine dining room, stairs and smoking lounge of the hotel.

Virginia Maissen commented: “I am so proud of the bespoke carpets, Brintons translated all my designs perfectly, the stand out details coupled with a classic pattern brings together both of our design visions. The 17 unique carpet designs demanded special attention from both sides, and Brintons delivered on time and within budget. This project perfectly demonstrates Brintons’ skill in creating one-off pieces to a client specification.”

Case Study: Brintons at Hotel Walther, SwitzerlandAntique treasures and decorations have been reinterpreted to reflect the hotel’s history: original ceilings and rounded archways from the early twentieth century have been exposed with the help of local craftsmen. Specially designed wall tapestries, curtains, and carpets created by Brintons have been added to complement the furnishings of each room.

The 4-star Hotel Walther is a third-generation family-run business, currently headed by Anne-Rose and Thomas Walther. Brintons is well known in Switzerland for its design expertise and market presence, and has an established reputation for high quality custom Axminster carpets and rugs.

Duravit at the Louvre Abu Dhabi

Project Spotlight: Duravit at Louvre Abu Dhabi

1000 666 Daniel Fountain

Jean Nouvel has created an architectural wonder in the desert. It includes products by Duravit, designed by Philippe Starck.

A commission that was unusual even for the French star architect and Pritzker prize winner Jean Nouvel – the creation of the first all-purpose museum in the Arab world – and the first in the twenty-first century, a building that is intended to stand as a symbol for Abu Dhabi.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi was officially opened on 11 November 2017. The spectacular building on Saadiyat Island will show 300 objects on loan from thirteen leading museums in France. However, the greatest attraction is the building itself.

Duravit at Louvre Abu DhabiBetween modernity and tradition
The architecture is modern but timeless, incorporating elements from Abu Dhabi’s architectural tradition. Jean Nouvel took inspiration from an Arab medina (old town) to create a building whose domed metal roof weighs as much as the Eiffel Tower in Paris but is supported by just four columns – a technical feat that is also an aesthetic experience.

A total of fifty-five different buildings form a museum city on the island in the Gulf, covered by a huge steel roof with a diameter of 180 metres.

Passages and corridors wind their way through this cool white labyrinth, with steps up to the flat roofs of some of the building blocks to enable visitors to see the spectacular domed roof from close up. This unique design consists of almost 8,000 stars of different sizes and angles, superimposed in seven layers.

Like a roof made of overlapping palm leaves, this structure provides shade and protection from the hot desert sun. The effect is breathtaking: “It produces a poetic, almost magical rain of light,” says architect Jean Nouvel. At night the effect is reversed when the internally lit building shines like a miniature night sky.

Nouvel, Starck and Picasso
In the white bathrooms the works of another French architect and designer are on show: toilets by Philippe Starck, designed for Duravit. Starck was also inspired by tradition in his design of the toilet. The Starck 1 toilet recalls its historical predecessor, a bucket – interpreted in a completely new way, of course.

Jean Nouvel’s building occupies a site of almost 100,000 square metres, with 8,600 square metres of exhibition space, including 6,400 for the permanent exhibition and 2,000 for temporary exhibitions. The first exhibition will feature Leonardo da Vinci’s “La Belle Ferronnière”, a self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh and works by Pablo Picasso.

Kit Kemp, Wilton Carpets create exciting carpet collection

1000 641 Daniel Fountain

Wilton Carpets and Kit Kemp have come together to create an exciting collection of woven wool-rich carpets for hospitality, travel and home.

Kit Kemp MBE has forged an international reputation as one of the world’s top interior designers. With a unique approach to her work, Kit is also well-known as an author and passionate champion of British art, craft and sculpture. As Design Director of Firmdale Hotels PLC, she is the creative force behind hotels including London’s Ham Yard, Charlotte Street, The Soho Hotel and New York’s Crosby Street Hotel and The Whitby. Her designs have been celebrated with many prestigious awards including ‘Condé Nast Best Hotel in the World for Design’.

Situated in the Wiltshire town of the same name, the spiritual home of weaving for nearly 400 years, Wilton Carpets designs and manufactures in Britain, making carpet from British wool on a blend of traditional machinery and the country’s most advanced robotic high-speed loom. Wilton Carpets is the embodiment of the very best in modern manufacturing blended with traditional craftsmanship.

Kit’s collaboration with Wilton Carpets has created a stand-out collection for hospitality, travel and home, interpreting scale and usability through the latest manufacturing techniques. With a highly experienced design team, spearheaded by Damien Roscoe, Wilton Carpets has skilfully turned Kit’s ideas into beautiful high quality woven carpets, pushing carpet craft to its limits.

Kit explains: “New manufacturing technology has made my ideas a possibility and with its design input, Wilton Carpets has turned them into a joyful reality. We have been able to create subtle effects and graduations of colour to give carpets a unique feel, similar to the finish of a hand-blocked fabric. Colour makes you feel happy and gives a contemporary buzz to this collection.”

The made-to-order range introduces nine unique and multi-tasking designs that draw from a diverse array of inspiration within folklore, architecture and botanical motifs. These come together to provide carpets that work in both traditional and modern interiors.

Damian Roscoe, Head of Creative at Wilton Carpets: “We’re incredibly proud of the Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets collection as it represents just what is achievable when two creative forces collaborate. The collection has been a joy to develop and we’ve worked closely with Kit to make sure her vision was reproduced with the attention-to-detail for which we are famed.”

Whether using traditional Axminster or Wilton weaves, or incorporating the added texture of a Brussels weave, Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets delivers carpet of the finest design and quality. Batik (main image)

Detail
A strong architectural look, which is ‘one of my favourites, so simple but graphic and strong’ explains Kit. Available in six colourways, including red on blue and yellow on black.

By Way

Domino
Based on traditional Turkish carpets, this design has a large diamond repeat that Kit says, ‘needs to be seen to be believed’. A definite ode to the Arts and Crafts in four colourways including dynamic shades of blue and terracotta.

Flower and Berry
There is more than meets the eye with this overall Botanical pattern. ‘This is a design that will work well in both traditional and modern settings’, says Kit. Available in five colourways featuring red on off-white, off-white on blue and off-white on pea green

Leaf Cut
Inspired by nature, this is a carpet that Kit describes as, ‘falling leaves in a modern way that will look interesting in any environment’. Leaf Cut comes in two popping colourways, blue with leaves of orange and red with green.

Leaf Cut in Cerise area rug, Kit Kemp by Wilton CarpetsOpen Plan
A large repeat that looks good in grand areas, tribal influences abound. The Open Plan pattern ‘takes the traditional and turns it into something that says today’, explains Kit. This pattern comes in four colour combinations, including three with an off-white base cloth.

Tweed Fleck
A tweed design which Kit describes as having ‘flecks of fabulous tiny vibrant colours” It is a modern-day classic. Tweed Fleck is available in seven high-impact colourways including red, teal and blue.

Squiggle
A simple linear geometric design that still manages to make a statement and which Kit believes will make ‘halls and stairways look tailored’. With inversed colours available, this pattern comes in five other off-white combinations.

Sleep 2017 Live: Kelly Hoppen joins forces with Brintons

753 518 Daniel Fountain

Kelly Hoppen MBE has joined forces with leading carpet manufacturer Brintons to create a bold new collection of contemporary woven carpets.

The new venture is the renowned interior designer’s first ever carpet collection and will be launched at this year’s Sleep, the annual hotel design event taking place in London today and tomorrow.

The Kelly Hoppen Collection by Brintons brings the designer’s unparalleled eye for trend-leading design to the commercial carpet sector. The result is a distinctive new contemporary aesthetic that completely eschews the typical ‘swirl and block’ patterns for which the commercial/hospitality sector is traditionally known.

Instead, the dynamic collection consists of 13 geometric and organic designs in on-trend colourways that reflect the designer’s award-winning design style and pared-back aesthetic. Kelly Hoppen took inspiration from diverse influences ranging from geometric shapes to elements found in everyday surroundings such as cracks in a pavement and splashes of paint.

“I wanted to do something quite cutting edge and out there compared to what we see at the moment…I think it’s different and it’s in the forefront of design in terms of commercial carpeting, so I am extremely excited,” she says.

Kelly Hoppen - Brintons - Sleep 2017The collection is suitable for a wide variety of hospitality applications including hotels, casinos, cruise ships or airports. Each Kelly Hoppen by Brintons design is woven to order in the full range of specifications that combine Brintons’ patented blend.

After 41 years in design, Kelly Hoppen relished the fresh challenge of designing her first contract carpets: “It’s been fun, it’s been enlightening and I’ve learnt a lot from it. Carpet is an interesting product to design. There is an array of materials and textures and it’s a challenge to design a carpet that is hardwearing but also luxurious, beautiful and comfortable. Although you think of it as a flat surface, it is three-dimensional so the design process is complex. You have to think carefully about scale too as the design needs to work in large expansive areas as well as in narrower spaces such as guestrooms and corridors. Not only that, you need to design a surface that other designers can put their own style on too. Once you get it right though, you just know.”

The designer continued: “In terms of the collaboration with Brintons, there is mutual admiration and respect -Brintons is an incredible company with great heritage. I think this is just the start of a really wonderful collaboration. With this collection, each piece that we’ve created is different and is a statement in itself. I think it’s going to be brilliant.”

Hardwick House

Project Spotlight: Wilton Carpets at Hardwick Hall

1000 713 Daniel Fountain

A stunning carpet full of classic design cues and woven by Wilton Carpets now graces areas of Hardwick Hall, a four-star luxury country hotel considered one of the North East’s most charming places to stay.

When looking for new carpet to adorn its Colman Suite, Crush Bar, corridors and lounge areas; the hotel turned to Wilton Carpets’ bespoke service to create a design perfectly in keeping with its unique style. An oversize repeating scroll is layered beneath a pin-line interlocking hexagon and surrounded by a decorative border, tones of taupe and grey giving a sophisticated tonal look.

The bordered design serves to frame the three areas of the Colman Suite, which can be separated to accommodate different functions and covers and to provide definition to the adjacent Crush Bar. The design also works well to define the lounge area of the hotel and to provide a striking carpet in corridors.

Sam Dean, senior designer, Wilton Carpets, commented: “We worked with Space I.D to develop a carpet design that referenced the classical elegance of Hardwick Hall’s 18th century architecture, while marking its status as one of the North East’s most luxurious destinations. Through blending sophisticated contemporary geometrics with elegant florals and classic fret borders, we’ve managed to achieve the difficult balance between historic reference and modern intention. A bordered design such as this is also a great way to define individual areas, at the same time giving a unified look.”

Installed by Pocklington Carpets, the 850 square metres of bespoke carpet were manufactured in Wilton’s Wiltshire factory, axminster woven in an 80% British wool and 20% nylon blend for wear and appearance retention. In a seven-row quality, the carpet can withstand high footfall levels, while it’s wool and nylon mix remains easy to clean, keeping the suite, bar, lounge and corridors looking their best throughout constant use.

Duravit HygieneGlaze

Product Spotlight: HygieneGlaze 2.0 from Duravit

850 593 Daniel Fountain

After the successful launch of HygieneGlaze in 2015, the innovative ceramic glaze has been further developed by Duravit’s research and development team, and now has a new formula: HygieneGlaze 2.0.

The new HygieneGlaze 2.0, which is baked into the ceramic during firing, is not only extremely effective, but also acts very quickly. After just six hours, 90% of bacteria are killed. After twelve hours, a 99.9% reduction is achieved – the same effect as its predecessor, but in half the time. After 24 hours, this percentage rises to 99.999% – an unprecedented level.

Additional activation mechanisms and components have been deployed in this new, patented process. The optimized formula of HygieneGlaze 2.0 contains a new combination of metal ions and other active substances, which is particularly effective in eradicating bacteria like E. coli, for example. The effectiveness is based on an oligodynamic reaction, which illustrates the detrimental effect of positively charged metal ions on bacteria.

HygieneGlaze 2.0 is integrated into the glaze during firing. This manufacturing process ensures an extremely effective reduction in pathogens such as escherichia coli. Baked into the ceramic and extending from the interior to the rim of the toilet or urinal, HygieneGlaze 2.0 is effective in the areas particularly susceptible to the accumulation of bacteria.

The effect of the innovative glaze on bacteria was so powerful during the hygienic microbiological tests that the measuring procedure results far exceeded the current limit. For this reason, subsequent investigations considered kinetics for the first time. Beforehand, only the starting and finishing concentrations after 24 hours were measured. Now, researchers can measure effectiveness over time and thereby show how many bacteria have been wiped out after 6, 12 and 24 hours.

HygieneGlaze 2.0 is available for all toilets and urinals in the Architec, Darling New, D-Code, DuraStyle, Happy D.2, ME by Starck, P3 Comforts, Starck 3 and Vero Air ranges.

Imagined around the concept of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, this year’s display will focus on bathroom accommodation that champions rest, recuperation and relaxation. Suited for all hotel budgets whether refurbishment, new build, off site, budget or grand-luxury specification, highlights on the stand will include the new luxurious Water Jewels bath.

Time to Rethink the Definition of “Luxury Hotels”
Luxury isn’t what it used to be, at least not for the hotel industry. Traditional concepts of luxury may still have their place in the market but they are increasingly being replaced with new forms, as the tastes, habits and desires of the guests who can afford such properties change. 750 471 Daniel Fountain

With its soft round shapes, the timeless Bau Ceramic collection fits harmoniously into any bathroom setting. Its understated design makes it the perfect choice for both residential and public buildings, such as hotels. The basin collection comprises of three wall-hung basins in widths of 55cm, 60cm and 65cm and a hand rinse basin that is 45cm wide. A pedestal and semi pedestal are available to cover the water and waste pipe work. The collection also has built-in basins that can be dropped in or built in from under the counter. For WCs, the collection offers a broad range of products that are both rimless and timeless. In addition to a wall-hung, wash-down WC, there is a floor-standing version with a horizontal or vertical outlet. WC seats with optional soft-closing covers complete the series. The Bau Ceramic urinals come with a concealed inlet/outlet or top inlet. The range also includes a wall-hung bidet as well as a floor-standing model. The comprehensive range is supplemented by coordinating GROHE Bau Cosmopolitan accessories, such as soap dispensers and towel rails, to ensure a perfectly matching design.

GROHE Euro Ceramic collection- elegance for the contemporary bathroom
In addition to Bau Ceramic, GROHE will also launch the Euro Ceramic collection to fit the matching GROHE portfolio. Euro Ceramic encapsulates contemporary style to create a modern bathroom that can be enjoyed for years to come. The bathroom ceramics coordinate effortlessly with the mixers and fittings in GROHE’s Eurosmart and Eurostyle lines, as well as with Eurosmart Cosmopolitan and Eurostyle Cosmopolitan. The range development was centred around the sophisticated toilet bowls, which possess a number of unique properties including rimless flushing technology, invisible fastenings plus the super hygienic ProGuard finish, to set them apart from the competition. In addition, they feature the innovative HyperClean surface, which uses silver ions to reduce bacteria growth by up to 99 percent. It is benefits like these which make Euro Ceramics the ideal complement to a modern lifestyle.

The collection also features four styles of basin including wall hung, countertop and under counter basins for design flexibility. In addition, the Euro Ceramic range includes wall hung and floor standing toilets and bidets. The BCFA Open series continued last week on 4th and 5th October with its second Manchester Open hosted at the iconic Museum of Science & Industry.

Held on the second floor of the Museum, in a light and airy space, this exhibition gave you the opportunity to meet and catch up with 27 BCFA Members based in the north and see their latest and best contract furnishing products.

Style Library Stand - BCFA Open

Style Library Stand – BCFA Open

A small but quality event meant that you were really able to talk to the exhibitors. Some of the stands that really stood out were Maine who showcased some amazing rust-effect cabinets; Johnson Tiles whose simple yet elegant stand showed off their products beautifully; and Tektura Wallcoverings who had a monochrome and bold geometric theme for their stand.

The first day was concluded with a ‘In Conversation With’ discussion which was led by Tonje Odegard from SPACE magazine who discussed the hospitality market with Founder and Creative Director of NoChintz, Lucy Goddard.

BCFA Open – Manchester – Johnson Tiles

They touched on the importance of ‘Instagram-ability’ of a space today, discussing how the smaller details are important and how the end-user really appreciates them. They also went on to discuss new hotel concepts that we are increasingly seeing pop up including a trend towards the ‘new-age’ style like, forest retreats or yoga inspired hotels.

Following the discussion guests and exhibitors could enjoy a well-deserved drink and were treated to a selection of tasty nibbles and canapes. Throughout both days there was also a chance to get your hands-dirty and get involved with some creative workshops. These included the return of the wonderful Patternistas who held their pattern-making workshop. You could also practice your print-making techniques with Sheffield-based artist Samantha Groom.

Jalu - Outdoor Lighting

Company Profile: Outdoor lighting from Jalu

1000 666 Daniel Fountain

Officially launched earlier this year, and first seen at Clerkenwell Design Week, there’s a new player on the outdoor accessory scene – Jalu – bringing high-quality and stylish lighting to the UK market whilst offering designers and landscapers a truly unique product for outdoor spaces.

Hotel Designs editor Daniel Fountain sat down with the founders of the company – Alison Cavey and Juliet Kauffmann – to discuss the company’s origins, the product and their plans for the future…

2017 has been a monumental year for Juliet and Alison. Having previously worked together in innovation strategy consulting for more than 15 years, they tell me that after years of working with start-up companies and commercialising new technologies they wanted a piece of the action.

“We wanted to work in a completely different sector and to be able to focus on a product and get excited and passionate about it,” Alison tells me.

That decision led the duo to developing a range of striking, attractive outdoor lighting pieces that make up Jalu’s product range. “We travelled a lot for work and for pleasure to places like Australia and around the Mediterranean, where there is a fantastic outdoor-based lifestyle, and we thought we could bring a little more of that vibe to the UK,” Alison adds.

“The first idea we had was around outdoor lighting which is very traditional here in the UK. In Spain and Italy you can find some really interesting, contemporary pieces – but they’re not designed for the UK market. That was our starting point – making a product suited to this market, using innovative, British-based suppliers who are a big part of our operation,” Alison explains.

It’s taken the pair around 18 months to get the company to where it is today, and there has been a learning curve along that road; namely in finding the right materials to produce the pieces and going through some several early prototypes. The final method takes on a casting approach using a material called Jesmonite (named as one of the products of the year at this year’s London Design Week).

Looking at the pieces, it’s clear to see that it certainly is a durable material to work with. The beauty of the products, too, is given the vagaries of the British weather the finish does not fade and is entirely frost-proof. Being considerably lighter than stone and concrete also means the pieces are easy to move, making them ideal for ever-changing layouts for outdoor spaces. This forms part of Jalu’s adoption of a current design trend – ‘bringing the inside, out’ – which sees indoor living spaces extended to the outdoors.

Juliet explains: “We wanted to create a product that looks just as good outside or inside, and this adds to the flexibility of usage for our clients. There is also an extraordinary versatility in terms of colour and finish, so we can create completely bespoke products for the end user.

“We saw two key markets for these high-end, handmade pieces – we originally targeted working with interior designers, garden designers, landscapers to get access their clients. But we’ve always seen a strong opportunity to work with boutique hotels, restaurants, spas – clients that can make a real statement with Jalu products,” she adds.

So when do they see as the ideal time to get involved in the design process?

“We can come in at any time during a project – due to the versatility of the product, so if a client comes to us and they already have a colour scheme, we can fit in around that as best we can. But ideally, we would come in earlier. The important thing to remember is these lights are a statement, they’re a feature – they’re not designed to be hidden around a corner, or to light something else; they are meant to be part of the design, so the earlier they can be incorporated into the design process, the better for us. Not to mention there is the potential for customisation or completely bespoke designs,” Juliet says.

And, although they are designed to be portable, they can be hard-wired too – the pieces are mains-powered, entirely IP65 rated so perfect for outside provided the outdoor socket has a residual current device (RCD) on it, or goes through to an indoor socket.

“So we see it as a standalone item that you can just plug in like you would with any device. But with a loop-in, loop-out system they can be wired up together. In terms of practicality, these are large pieces that wouldn’t have worked with a small, solar bulb; they needed something a bit more substantial, so we use high-quality LED luminaires, which are obviously energy-efficient and should last you a long time,” Alison concludes.

So far, Alison and Juliet have received considerable positive feedback from the design world. And with more designs on the horizon, there is more to come from Jalu. Now up-and-running, the next step is to target independent and boutique hoteliers where the duo feel the product is perfectly suited.

You can see Juliet and Alison on the Jalu stand at the upcoming Independent Hotel Show on Stand 29. Be sure to stop by, the future is looking bright for this innovative and stylish product…

Dernier & Hamlyn Four Seasons

Project Spotlight: Dernier & Hamlyn checks in at Four Seasons again

1000 634 Daniel Fountain

Dernier & Hamlyn recently completed its third project for luxury hotel brand Four Seasons following successful commissions in London and Baku.

In partnership with Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, the London-based bespoke lighting specialists manufactured unique antique brass chandeliers for public areas throughout the Four Seasons Hampshire hotel that utilised a range of a range of its artisans’ skills.

Nine 12-arm pendants 1m high and some 1.2m across were produced for the hotel’s drawing room and five chandeliers hand wrapped in rope were produced for the hotel’s lounge and reception areas requiring painstaking attention to detail to achieve the desired effect.

Dernier & Hamlyn also updated and rewired many of the hotel’s existing light fittings to bring them in line with modern standards and wired vintage lighting that had been sourced by the MBDS team too.

Martin Brudnizki Design Studio said: “We’ve used Dernier & Hamlyn for a number of MBDS’ projects from small restaurants to extremely large hotels. We are always impressed by their knowledge and their expertise and their ability to problem solve rather than just deliver lighting. This was demonstrated again for Four Seasons Hampshire where they balanced the requirements of our design concepts with practicality, aesthetic beauty and affordability.”

Opinion: Mitre Linen - Keeping hotel guests cool

Opinion: Mitre Linen – Keeping hotel guests cool

1000 548 Daniel Fountain

A hot and stuffy hotel room is not conducive to a good night’s sleep. Research suggests that if the temperature of a room is too high, then it will take longer for an individual to fall asleep and, when they finally do, this sleep can be disturbed leading to guests feeling irritable in the morning.

So how can you make sure your rooms – and your guests – remain cool and comfortable throughout the summer months?

Here Chris Tame, Mitre Linen’s National Sales Manager, provides us with his expert tips and advice to ensure that your guests experience a refreshing night’s sleep – even on the warmest of evenings.

1. Choose crisp cotton bed linen
Pure 100% cotton is a breathable fabric, which means it has the ability to transfer moisture away from the skin. This will keep your beds and your guests feeling cool and fresh all night long. Cotton is also soft to the touch and is a naturally hypoallergenic fabric which can also promote a comfortable sleeping environment. The higher the thread count, then the tighter the weave of the fabric, which adds to both its luxuriousness and its durability. Look for bed linen made with 100% cotton and with a thread count over 200 for a soft, luxurious and cooling feel.

2. Try a summer duvet
This is a good time of the year to replace a winter duvet with a lighter summer weight duvet – or to opt for an all year round 10.5 tog duvet so you don’t have to change them seasonally. Microfibre duvets are particularly good throughout the warmer summer months as, although they are light, they still feel luxurious and snuggly to sleep under. Choose one with a 100% cotton cover to promote an even cooler and crisp environment.

3. Shop around for innovative products
Small details can make a big difference to a guest’s stay, which is why we love the Coolguard pillow protector. Thanks to its innovative temperature controlled property, this ‘cool to touch’ pillow protector is designed to offer a peaceful cooling sensation. Offering these sort of innovative products provides your guests with the ultimate sleep solutions and also adds to their overall experience of their stay.

4. Replace heavy velour bathrobes for waffle weave
Nothing makes your guests feel special like a super snug bathrobe, but throughout the warmer months some guests may not welcome this gesture as much. I always advise my customers to provide their guests with a lighter bathrobe during the summer so they can still enjoy a little indulgence after bathing. Opt for a waffle weave design which will be lightweight yet soft to the touch.

Opinion: Mitre Linen - Keeping hotel guests cool5. Remember the little touches
Help to keep your guests cool by providing them with complimentary bottles of still and sparkling water in their rooms, kept refreshingly cool in the mini-bar. Why not also provide them with a friendly letter to make them feel welcomed whilst informing them of the gesture.

Torquay B&B Tyndale wins AA 5 stars after Mitre Linen makeover

615 459 Daniel Fountain

A boutique B&B in Torquay has been given an AA 5 stars B&B award plus a breakfast award thanks to the help of a Mitre Linen makeover. Daniel Kilik and Andrew Burton run Tyndale, a contemporary boutique B&B in the coastal resort.

They invited Mitre Linen to work closely with them to help them achieve a unique look for each of their guest rooms. Laura Webber, Mitre’s Regional Sales Manager, visited their B&B to advise on the best products for both the property and their guests.

As Daniel and Andrew were looking for something unique, Laura recommended that they use Mitre’s bespoke soft furnishings service, where they could choose from countless prints and fabrics and be guided throughout the project.

One room was given a striking geometric look and feel using black and gold while another was transformed with on trend denim colours and a crushed velvet headboard in silver for the beautiful new bed.

Taking inspiration from a room’s green wallpaper, another bedroom was given a crisp new look using curtains, runners and a mixture of cushions in Rhapsody aqua fabric. They also bought the Duke toppers from the Heritage range plus Tencel pillows and Microfibre duvets from the Luxury range as well as luxurious white bathrobes.

Daniel said: “When we took over the property in 2011, it was a run-down 3 star rated guest house in desperate need of some love and attention.

“With their industry knowledge, Mitre Linen have helped us create unique, elegant and contemporary boutique rooms for our guests.

“Their work has allowed us to re-launch as a boutique Bed and Breakfast and we are already seeing the benefits. Not only has our refurbishment and attractive new look helped us to achieve an increase in our room rates, but we now hold AA 5 stars plus a breakfast award.

Tyndale“Our guests have given us a 5 star rating on TripAdvisor and we have been praised for our ‘beautiful decoration’, ‘immaculate rooms’ and ‘high standard finish’.”

Mitre Linen’s Laura Webber said: “Daniel had a very clear vision of how he wanted the rooms to look – all contemporary and individual and each totally different. We spent time working together choosing colours and fabrics to complement each room’s colour scheme and he was very welcoming to my ideas. He was thrilled with the results and has had some wonderful feedback from guests on how stunning his rooms are.

“We love helping hoteliers in their refurbishment and, as an experienced hospitality provider for over 70 years, we understand that every establishment is unique.”

Duravit Vero Air

Duravit uses c-bonded technology for new Vero Air collection

875 557 Daniel Fountain

The new Vero Air retains the iconic, rectangular character of the Vero washbasins whilst introducing Duravit’s ground-breaking c-bonded technology – combining the unmistakable character of the original with a new level or precision and perfect proportions.

The straight interior surface and precise edges of the Vero Air washbasins reflect the collection’s linear charm. The use of patented c-bonded technology sees the washbasin and vanity unit being combined to form a minimalist masterpiece.

With the new Vero Air” c-bonded” version, the furniture washbasin is connected almost seamlessly to the vanity unit in a complex process. Thanks to the accurate and precise-fitting connecting technology, ceramic and furniture merge to form a single unit. The material thickness of the washbasin is hidden from view and reduced to the precise rim that, at the transition between the cool, smooth ceramic and the natural structure of the wood, feels uniquely pleasant to the touch.

Manufactured with millimetre precision, the furniture begins exactly where the ceramic ends. The materials blend together seamlessly to form a single, harmonious unit. Three generous widths are available: 800mm, 1000mm and 1200mm in a choice of wall-hung with single or double drawers.

However, the “c-bonded” solution does not just look and feel impressive: DuraCeram®, the patented special ceramic that actually makes this precision and moulding possible, is particularly wear-resistant. The large shelves at the sides are very practical and the smooth, seamless surfaces are also quick and easy to clean.

The vanity units of the L-Cube furniture feature Tip-On technology with its gentle push to open and close action. Choose from 31 colour finishes including matt and lacquered options, and a wide range of wood including the new subtly textured Oak Cashmere real wood veneer.

Mitre Linen: How to transform a hotel bathroom in 7 steps

960 640 Daniel Fountain

Hotel and B&B guests wants to be able to relax and rejuvenate in a beautiful bathroom setting. So how can you make sure your bathrooms make a big statement and add to a guest’s experience of their stay?

Chris Tame, Mitre Linen’s National Sales Manager, says: “Even when they are regularly renovated, hotel bathrooms tend to be heavily used by guests which makes them easy to look tired.”

Here he gives his tips to refresh a bathroom in a cost effective way to ensure the rooms are not out of action for any length of time…

1. Update your bathroom blinds
Windows are a focal point in any room which makes it important to regularly update and refresh your bathroom blinds. With heavy use, they can easily become splashed with shower gel, toothpaste and even make-up over time. Updating your bathroom blinds gives you the chance to tie the look of the room in with your chosen colour scheme. Or, if you want to make a statement, bright blinds can bring a pop of colour to a bathroom. Using lighter coloured fabric shades in your bathroom blinds will allow more sunlight to filter into the room while still maintaining privacy.

2. Refresh your bathroom towels
Super soft white towels that smell clean and fresh are high on the list of what B&B guests want. We also know that half of guests think an establishment is better if it provides branded towels and 60% prefer a large bath sheet to a large towel. Providing wonderfully heavyweight towels is an attention to detail that can help to create a truly tranquil experience for guests. Indulge your guests with luxuriously soft 600gsm pure cotton for a crisp clean look for your bathroom or try microcotton Turkish towels which have the ability to absorb water almost instantaneously.

Mitre Linen - Bathroom accesoriesIf you want to co-ordinate your towels with your colour scheme, consider 100% coloured towels which come in shades ranging from navy and chocolate to blue and mint. Alternatively, the towel border can be colour matched with the hotel’s desired Pantone. For a more bespoke experience, why not embroider your logo on towels.

3. Upgrade essential extras
Consider the little touches which can make a difference to a bathroom. As well as providing useful storage solutions such as simple glass jars and bottles, update your bathroom bins, tissue holders and hair dryers. Creating a neat and uncluttered room will help to make the space aesthetically pleasing for your guests.

4. Renew your shower curtains
Shower curtains are heavily used and it is important to update and renew them before they start to look tired. Go for 100% polyester and consider whether to choose from an innovative hookless shower curtain with a detachable backing which you can easily remove to wash and simply re-attach with poppers, or a plain hook shower curtain.

Mitre Linen - Bathroom accesories5. Re-grout your tiles
Refresh your bathroom tiles by re-grouting them. This is a cost effective way to revitalise your bathroom and make it look like new again. It also helps to prevent any water leaks from occurring.

6. Add an element of luxury with bathrobes and slippers
Exceed your guest’s expectations and bring a touch of luxury to your bathrooms with a sumptuous, fluffy bathrobe and an indulgent pair of slippers for your guests to sink their feet into. A wonderfully soft bathrobe and slippers – embroidered with your company logo – can make guests feel special. Bathrobes come in a variety of fabric options from waffle weave and polyester to 100% cotton and heavyweight velour. You can even offer your guests bathrobes for the whole family with a range of smaller sizes now available for children.

7. Ensure bathroom safety
Ensure safety while bathing with a non-slip rubber bath mat. Practical and good value, these mats are slip-resistant and are anti-fungal treated.

The primed plates come with a choice of insert finishes, from Bright Chrome to Antique Brass, and with either black or white inset surrounds.

Decorex takes place ahead of Hamilton’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2018. During the past five decades, the family-run British business has become renowned for supplying high quality decorative electrical wiring accessories, lighting control and multi-room audio systems that are manufactured and finished to an exceptional standard. They will have a plethora of product on show that have been designed to create the right look and ambience in any space, while meeting the exacting project demands of architects, interior designers and tech-savvy homeowners.

Hamilton plate montage 427/7 connectivity

Amongst the solutions on show will be their increasingly popular range of USB switched sockets. Available in Hartland, Hartland CFX®, Sheer and Sheer CFX® designs, these USB sockets ensure the latest smart devices can be easily charged through a USB port, fulfilling the need to be connected 24/7. Unlike some of Hamilton’s competitors, its dual USB switched sockets have a 1A rated USB port for charging mobile phones and a second 2.1A USB port for tablets and other devices, meaning double the charging capacity simultaneously.

Create a colour wash with light

Hamilton will also showcase its Smart Lighting Control, including its RGB DMX control option. This allows a colour wash to be applied to an area using LED lighting, helping to add drama, create a certain ambience or to ‘zone’ specific areas of a larger space. Typically popular in the bars, hotels and restaurants, this on-trend lighting solution is becoming more desirable domestically and is adding flair to homes and hotels.

Free designers’ swatch
Don’t forget to pick up your free designers’ swatches on Stand H37a, a great reference tool illustrating available plate finishes. Divided into two tone boxes, the ‘Warm’ collection includes Polished Brass, Richmond Bronze and Connaught finishes, amongst others, while the ‘Cool’ collection includes Bright Stainless, Black Nickel and Satin Chrome. The finishes can be applied to Hamilton’s enormous collection of switch and socket plate designs.

Design your own
However, if you can’t find exactly the right solution for you, the Hamilton team will be on-hand to discuss their bespoke design and finishing service. The team can create an electrical wiring accessory that’s as unique as your design theme or has the exact functionality that you need. This is particularly helpful for those working on hotel projects where bespoke multi-function plates are needed.

Signbox delivers stunning brass-effect directory for prestigious London office building

1024 719 Daniel Fountain

Signbox has supplied a bespoke tenant directory sign for the reception area at 12 Arthur Street, near London Bridge. Having won the opportunity with contractors Kingly Developments through a competitive tender process in January 2017, the work was completed in mid-June.

The project formed a key part of the extensive reception and lift lobby refurbishment in this prestigious office building which currently lists Prudential and A.M. Best among its tenants.

Signbox manufactured the directory sign in-house on a Tekcel EXR router using 20mm thick acrylic and 6mm thick aluminium. The sign components were finished with a tarnished brass metal effect, a revolutionary process that applies a veneer of a metal coating to the surface and gives the look and feel of solid metal.

This Metall-FX manufacturing process involves artisan hand-finishing, polishing and painting multiple layers to achieve the appearance of aged brass, matching other architectural details in the build. The surface edges of the sign were bevelled with a pencil round router bit and sanded to a specific grit finish to achieve the optimum surface. Though it was time-consuming, the weight and cost savings over traditional brass fabrication were considerable.

“The architects on the project, Morrow + Lorraine, had originally requested a solid metal fabrication that would have been very expensive to produce,” explains Signbox managing director Mark Bartlett. “With our extensive experience of manufacturing techniques, we were able to value engineer the design, presenting an alternative proposal which offered significant cost savings to the client. We also worked closely with the specialist concrete cladding contractor – Graphic Relief – in order to facilitate a first fix of the support channels to secure the directory to the wall behind reception.”

“We have worked with Kingly Developments on a number of high-profile projects over the years,” Bartlett adds. “We were delighted to team up with them again on this project and, together with the architects and other specialist contractors, deliver a finished product that met all of the client’s expectations, while also coming in under budget.”

“Working with Signbox on the brass effect tenant directory for 12 Arthur Street has been a real success,” says Daniel Hall, Associate at Morrow + Lorraine Architects. “We have developed a good rapport through the period of design development, and have been impressed with their ability to advise on finishes and manufacturing processes that respond to the brief, ensuring the product was delivered on programme and within budget. We would be happy to work with Signbox again on future collaborations.”

Mitre Linen

Guest Blog: Mitre – Six ways to accessorise hotel rooms

1000 666 Guest Blog

Every establishment is unique and it is often the little touches that can make all the difference to a guest’s experience. The increasing credibility of travel review sites has made the hospitality market even more competitive, so it is important to stand out for all the right reasons.

Here Chris Tame, Mitre Linen’s National Sales Manager, provides us with his six expert tips how to accessorise your rooms in order to create a warm welcome, a wonderful stay and a lasting impression.

1) Soft furnishings: Beautiful soft furnishings can transform a room and instantly make a guest feel welcome. Whether you want to ignite a certain sense of style or reinforce your brand identity, refreshing your curtains, cushions and bed runners will help create that all-important great first impression.

2) Include a blanket or throw: A deliciously soft cashmere or woollen throw or blanket can add a touch of glamour to a room as well as making guests feel at home. Guests love snuggling into a little comfort and will appreciate this little gesture.

3) Pillow menu: The right pillow can make all the difference to a good night’s sleep and, in a competitive market place, personalisation is the key to standing out. Why not offer your guests a pillow menu to allow them to pick their ideal pillow? This is a unique and personal gesture and will help provide your guests with a fantastic night’s sleep, tailored to their requirements.

4) Offer practical bedroom accessories: Complement each bedroom with practical amenities that will provide your guests with all the essentials to make their stay as easy and comfortable as possible. From quality hair dryers to irons and ironing boards, sometimes these little extras can be a necessity.

5) Offer guests a bathrobe and slippers: Allow your guests to feel completely pampered and indulged by leaving a sumptuous bathrobe hanging up in the room. Nothing says luxury like a velour bathrobe and a pair of matching slippers. For that extra-personal touch, embroider your bathrobes with your brand name to help reinforce your identity throughout their stay.

6) Include complimentary toiletries: Guests love a quality selection of quality complimentary shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and body creams in their bathrooms. Adding them to a room shows attention to detail and will add a touch of luxury to that special hotel experience.

MK Electric's new Dimensions range has been launched

Guest Blog: MK Electric – new dimensions for hospitality design

750 484 Guest Blog

MK Electric share the benefits of their new range of design-led wiring accessories called Dimensions, perfect for hoteliers looking for modernity with design flexibility…

A growing number of hotels are shedding traditional designs in favour of something a little more modern, as rapidly changing interior trends require agile products which can evolve along with the building as a whole.

A key part of this is design flexibility, and ranges which can offer scalability and ease of replacement are becoming increasingly popular amongst hoteliers. These not only allow regular refreshes to a space without a significant financial or time investment, but allow common design throughout a building with scalable options from back of house office areas to suite rooms.

In order to meet this demand, MK Electric has launched a new range of screwless wiring devices, Dimensions, a design-led solution which is easily upgradeable and available in eight different finishes for a contemporary finish to any room.

Designed as a two-piece product solution, Dimensions is available as two individual parts, a functional module and clip-on frontplate, which can be ordered separately. This two-part installation offers a high level of adaptability, allowing frontplates to be changed as the design inside the building evolves over time.

And, as end users are expecting more from their hotels, the range incorporates products such as integrated USB socket outlets for easy smart device charging, LED dimmers, keycard switches and ‘do not disturb’ switches, all with a unified look.

Emma Segelov, head of marketing at MK Electric, said: “We understand that in today’s design-led environment, hoteliers need wiring devices which not only blend with their current décor but can be quickly and easily changed to match a revamp.

“The new MK Electric Dimensions range offers a design which not only has the scalability to fit into every area of a hotel, but which can also be interchanged and upgraded with ease to match any future changes in colour scheme, without blowing the budget or time-intensive work.”

Dimensions provides peace of mind for contractor, customer and end user, and comes complete with a 20-year guarantee (exclusions apply).

Duravit Vero Air with SensoWash

Product Spotlight: Vero Air Rimless WC and SensoWash Slim Seat

750 517 Daniel Fountain

Vero Air is a progression in design from the successful Vero series. It includes the very latest technological advances from Duravit – particularly for toilets.

The new Vero Air WC incorporates the ultimate in comfort and hygiene with advanced Rimless® technology, and is available with HygieneGlaze 2.0 and the SensoWash Slim shower-toilet seat. The wall-mounted model is also the first square rimless design from Duravit.

The Vero Air toilet is impressive, not just in terms of its appearance but also its functions. The rectangular basic form finishes with a gentle curve downwards, thereby appearing geometrically precise and harmoniously round at the same time.

The toilet seat and cover can be easily removed for cleaning with the press of a side button. With the appearance of a traditional, yet elegant toilet, SensoWash Slim is a far cry from the very first shower-toilets. It offers the ultimate in 21st century toilet hygiene and comfort, with all the technology neatly incorporated into the seat.

The seat and shower-toilet technology are completely separate: The entire SensoWash Slim seat unit can be easily removed, allowing it to be cleaned quickly and thoroughly. A touch button control operates all the functions. After using the toilet, simply select the desired cleaning function, water intensity and temperature. This minimalist shower toilet includes a number of essential functions: it is easy to install, saves energy thanks to an integrated flow heater and is offered at an attractive price.

Inside the Vero Air WC, the Rimless® technology has been further advanced and, for the first time, enables perfect flushing results with a rectangular wall-mounted toilet. This shows how geometry, fluid mechanics and design can be successfully combined for maximum efficiency. In Duravit Rimless®, the open design of the WC rim enables an innovative and powerful flush: water flows in the form of a horizontal arc, and then vertically, before flushing the entire inner surface of the bowl without splashing, even with just 4.5 litres of water.

By adding the innovative ceramic glaze HygieneGlaze 2.0 the Vero Air WC is a toilet that is industry leading and a new archetype for modern living. The innovative ceramic glaze is antibacterial and this innovative ceramic glaze kills an unprecedented 99.999% of germs and bacteria. HygieneGlaze 2.0 provides long-lasting, anti-bacterial protection for a small additional cost. It also durable, safe and defines a new standard in bathroom hygiene.

Guest Blog: MK Electric – Getting into detail to impress guests

999 634 Daniel Fountain

When it comes to impressing guests, it’s vital to stay ahead of the game and offer an experience like no other, and a key part of this is design. Here, Emma Segelov, head of marketing at MK Electric, looks at the latest innovations available to keep hoteliers ahead of the game.

Competition in the hospitality industry is intense, with customers increasingly seeking more than just a budget room. For example, with international travel now more accessible than ever, a hotel needs to take into consideration the needs of those travelling light for a business trip, as much as a couple on a city break. Both will have different requirements, but ultimately seek a similarly memorable experience.

Whilst a bold and eye-catching exterior is imperative to initially capture the interest of a guest, it is just as important to ensure that the attention continues to the finer, often overlooked, details. This includes the likes of light switches, sockets and other wiring devices, all of which have the power to change the aesthetics and practicality of a room.

For example, investing in integrated USB socket outlets can be a lifesaver for guests. Given the integral role smart devices play in modern life, the need for charging power on the go cannot be underestimated. Whether it’s an international guest, who may have forgotten their travel adaptor, or equally for customers from closer to home who just happen to need additional charging ports for their smart devices, USB outlets mean hoteliers needn’t stock charging devices, and can be assured guests have the charging capacity they need. What’s more, certain ranges are available which add an extra layer of differentiation. For example, MK Electric allows hoteliers to take intuitive functionality and compound it with beautiful, bespoke design with its expert Design Service.

MK Electric's new Dimensions range has been launched
This service, which is part of MK Electric’s Elements collection, allows users to create their own individual sockets and switches to ensure a seamless continuation of the overall interior concept. Whether that’s a leather look or metallic, there’s a look available to match any interior – so every last design detail can be taken care of.

An equal consideration is flexibility. The fast-paced world of interior design is constantly developing new trends, and in order to provide an up-to-date décor for guests, it is important that fixtures and fittings are able to be easily adapted to fit any style upgrades. Again, this is an area where wiring devices are an important consideration. Sometimes the smallest touches can be the most impactful, and when a hotelier wants to update the look of their premises, elegant new sockets and switches can make all the difference.

In line with this, MK Electric has launched Dimensions, a new range of screwless wiring devices which is easily upgradeable and available in eight different finishes for a contemporary finish to any room.

Designed as a two-piece product solution, Dimensions is available as two individual parts, a functional module and clip-on frontplate. This means that the visible part of the wiring device can easily be changed to match a new interior, without the need for any additional renovation, and, as the frontplate is clip on, without bringing in a qualified installer.

As customers become more discerning about design, it makes sense to bring a touch of individuality to every inch of an interior. With bespoke switches, dimmers and sockets available to suit every décor, and new products entering the market which allow quick and affordable style updates, wiring devices should be a core consideration for hoteliers.

Hansgrohe Croma 280

Product Spotlight: Shower pleasure with hansgrohe favourite – Croma 280

750 489 Daniel Fountain

The new hansgrohe Croma 280 overhead showers bring clean design and the pleasure of a generous rain shower to the bathroom.

“Customer feedback shows that the trend towards extra-large shower heads and all-in-one shower systems, like our convenient showerpipes, is still going strong,” explains Jan Heisterhagen, Vice President Product Management, Hansgrohe SE. “With the Croma 280 shower head range we’re expanding one of our bestselling lines at an attractive price/performance ratio.”

Quality and shower pleasure
Precise shapes and clean lines emphasise the high quality of the hansgrohe Croma 280 showerheads. Their design is the work of hansgrohe’s longstanding partner Phoenix Design. The 280-millimeter spray disc is generously sized; it is made of metal, is durable, robust and can be detached for easy cleaning. Thanks to air-enriched water drops, the lavish shower spray splashes less than conventional shower jets and envelops the body in a warm sense of wellbeing.

Product Spotlight: Shower pleasure with hansgrohe favourite - Croma 280The showerheads are available for ceiling or wall installation. Customers can opt for models equipped with hansgrohe EcoSmart water-saving technology. These use only about nine litres per minute, half the water used by showerheads without EcoSmart.

The showerpipe: an all-round talent
The hansgrohe Croma Select 280 showerpipe combines all components in a single system: overhead shower, hand shower, shower holder, thermostat and hose – a complete package convenient for both new construction projects and bathroom remodels. The showerpipe features high-quality materials, solid workmanship and easy cleaning. The horizontal shower arm can be used to swivel the overhead shower to the desired position. This is an advantage in small shower areas; for example, in situations where there is only room to install the showerpipe near a corner; in this case, the overhead shower can be centrally positioned, allowing for more freedom of movement.

As an addition to the pleasurable overhead rain shower, the Croma Select S Multi hand shower offers flexibility with its three spray modes. Switching from one kind of spray to another is easy – all it takes is the push of a button. The integrated hansgrohe Ecostat Comfort thermostat allows the precise selection of individual temperature preferences and makes sure water doesn’t get too hot. The hansgrohe Croma Select 280 showerpipe comes in two additional versions: one with a single-lever mixer for bathtubs, and a renovation model for use with existing taps and mixers in bathroom renovation projects.

Boutique chairs - Kobe opinion Soft furnishings

Soft Furnishings Focus: Kobe – Upholstery colours, designs for 2017

1000 637 Daniel Fountain

As 2017 sees bold colours and motifs continue in soft furnishings, David Harris, managing director of luxury fabric specialist, Kobe UK, takes a look at some of the vibrant new colours and designs in upholstery fabrics.

The latest trends include collections where each fabric has an individual identity. Rich, dark greens are back in fashion, especially botanical patterns and jungle printed jacquards, woven with metallic yarns, paired with the young, modern look of natural materials, wood, cork or marble.

Bright floral designs, such as Kobe’s Clemence from its Boutique collection, are also very popular right now. Upholstery fabrics that can be supplied with FR treatments and those created from 100% natural fabrics in art and craft styled patterns, are an ideal addition to any hotel interior and can be perfectly matched with soft furnishings in shimmering gold or sunny yellows.

For a stunning look which creates a room to remember, geometric shapes in furniture are also in style with upholstery fabric woven in both timeless and on-trend colours, such as vivid green or intense fuchsia.

Kobe – Volterra

With matt velvets making a great come back in interiors everywhere, we’ve featured the colour green in Kobe’s lush velvets, such as Volterra, which can be combined with other soft furnishing fabrics to be truly on trend. Don’t be afraid to experiment with dark colours to create a mood of mystery as the latest room trends head for drama and elegance. Choose sumptuous Henry in moody blue, opulent gold, or the fiery glow of dark red, or luxurious aubergine.

For the more traditional interior there are fabrics woven in matt and shiny yarns, with beautiful paisley patterns making an entrance this year such as Adore which creates a multi-dimensional effect on the damask pattern, in eight colours.

Soft supple chenille upholstery fabric in easy-to-care-for material is also fashionable in both rich and neutral shades. Cocoon is a highlight of the Essente collection and can be used for both curtains and upholstery. Its chenille in 100% polyester is finished with an FR domestic back-coat, so ‘ready to go’ and features a palette of 36 shades ranging from neutral cream, beige and pale grey, warm blue, brown and rose to vibrant lime, orange and red.

Adore Kobe's Boutique collectionWhatever design and style, it’s always exciting to create something new. For those searching for interior inspiration, today’s new collections include an extensive range of upholstery shapes and fabrics, from tradition to contemporary, soft and bright to dark and dramatic.

The Wigmore at The Langham London - Dernier & Hamlyn's luxury lighting

Dernier & Hamlyn’s luxury lighting at The Langham London

999 617 Daniel Fountain

The Langham London in the heart of the city’s West end is an architectural icon that was Europe’s first Grand Hotel when it opened in 1865.

The Wigmore, its new modern British tavern with interiors by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, features bespoke lighting from Dernier & Hamlyn’s London factory including a spectacular 27 arm chandelier some 2m high and 2m across. The chandelier has been designed to be a luxurious, contemporary interpretation of traditional London pub lighting and was hand cast in brass and hand finished in antique bronze by Dernier & Hamlyn’s team of artisans.

They also produced beautiful wall lights that feature handblown ribbed glass globes fitted to individually cast and finished back plates.

Martin Brudnizki Design Studio says: “We invariably choose Dernier & Hamlyn for bespoke lighting when quality, design integrity and attention to detail are vital. With a commission as important as this, their specialist skills and extensive experience were essential and we and The Langham are delighted with the results.”

Duravit Vero Air C

Guest Blog: Duravit – trends for the ‘holistic bathroom of the future’

872 748 Daniel Fountain

With the new products presented at ISH 2017, Duravit has re-interpreted the basic idea of the holistic interior. New designs provide the scope for individual bathroom furnishings offering a high standard of living.

All products have a consistent design language and can be combined with products from all series to optimum effect. Precise geometric forms, selected materials and soft, matt colours and textures take their place in the bathroom. Design, function and high operating comfort are perfectly coordinated.

Nordic elegance with gentle colour shades
The Nordic furnishing style is characterised by clear forms and soft, natural colours. For Duravit, the Danish designer, Cecilie Manz has combined Nordic design with new technologies, new colours and new materials, which are impressive in terms of both feel and function.

The Luv bathroom series offers completely new design possibilities for either larger rooms or guest bathrooms, the unusual design combines Nordic purism with timeless, emotional elegance. The above-counter basins made from DuraCeram® impress with their subtle lines, generous inner basin and clear edges. The selection of materials and colours is testament to Cecilie Manz’s refined sense for touch and nuances.

DuravitFor the first time, Duravit uses matt glazes in soft tones on the outside of the DuraCeram wash bowls, which contrast with the high-glaze white ceramic inside the bowl. New pale Nordic colours in satin-matt lacquer can also be found on the furniture. The distinctively shaped baths are based on the form of the wash bowl and are made from the mineral material DuraSolid A, which offers a pleasantly warm feel and a high-quality matt look.

Timeless geometry re-imagined
Clear, timeless forms create lasting value and are popular for bathroom furnishings. Vero Air, is in keeping with this ongoing trend: the entire bathroom series impresses both purists and individuals with a feel for durable design. With its clear, classically rectangular form, Vero has been one of the architectural classics of bathroom design since 2001. Thanks to modern manufacturing techniques, the precise design of Vero Air reinterprets Vero’s timeless geometry. The range’s washbasins and bathtubs impress with reduced edges and a striking linear charm.

With its new DuraSquare collection, Duravit presents an upgrade of Vero Air that sets new standards with its clarity, precision and reduction. Exact edges blend with the organically flowing inner contours. From the washbasin to the bathtub, the programme is designed to be sustainable and is made with the innovative materials DuraCeram and DuraSolid. Combined with the new furniture frame, the washbasins become a real eye-catcher in the bathroom. This flexible base is height-adjustable and can be supplied in silver (chrome) or matt black.

Duravit
Creative solutions for compact areas

Increasingly limited living space demands greater practicality, and this requires smart solutions. With the innovative Shower + Bath combination,
Duravit has succeeded in uniting the strict requirements regarding contemporary bathroom design and optimum use of space: the design by EOOS features a walk-in shower and bathtub in one. The functional versatility of Shower + Bath is a result of the high level of precision in the finishing and the use of the innovative material DuraSolid A.

Individual and cut-to-size washing areas with surrounds and storage space are both functional and convenient. The new console system comprises uniform furniture consoles in two different thicknesses (30 and 45 mm) and with a variable width and depth. They can be combined with vanity units and furniture from a total of seven Duravit ranges: L-Cube, Vero, Happy D.2, Delos, DuraStyle, Ketho and X-Large. The Duravit consoles are available with 32 different finishes from high-gloss lacquer, for example in Apricot Pearl or Stone Blue, to real-wood fronts such as oak or walnut. With individual combinations such as a walnut console and discreet, white vanity units, interesting accents can be created.
