Miniview: Druid Lodge, Killiney, in Co. Dublin, Ireland

“I don’t know whether you’ll like this” said Chris with a worried frown. It was party time at Simons, and we had spent the day treasure hunting around the outer suburbs of Dublin in Dalkey and Killiney, and the last thing I needed was the suggestion that our B&B was not up to much. Blimey, did she read it wrong! Druid Lodge is an assemblage, a work of love and art assembled by two of Ireland’s unsung heroes, interiors that some designers aspire to create but here an organic living memory bank.

It starts on the street – although to call this narrow country lane a street, despite its urban location is perhaps inaccurate. High walls, verdant growth of trees and shrubs made finding the Druid Lodge difficult in the dark. The narrow entrance of open dilapidated iron gates barely admitting my motor into a drive that hinted of adventure and exploration, trees making a tunnel to the house, an ivy covered veteran of the 19th Century. It was party time at Druid Lodge as host Ken McClenaghan organised the celebration of his partner Cynthia’s 65th birthday, with his large family around an outdoor garden fireplace in the gathering gloom.

The front door opened in welcome and I suspect my jaw dropped at the cornucopia of art and craft from striking contemporary pastels to church pews that spread before me. Every space, vertical and horizontal, was covered – Ken is obviously not a subscriber to minimalism, but there was order underlying the madness and the large and beautiful room spaces carried everything with aplomb. These are interiors that fascinated in their detail, constantly revealing little surprises, from a hand written vellum Quoran of obvious antiquity through deco marble carvings to pseudo Renoirs.

£10 Million Refurbishment at Lancaster London

The Lancaster London, one of Europe’s largest banqueting venues, is spending over £10 million on a major refurbishment project to renovate its award-winning banqueting venues and install brand new commercial kitchens. Banqueting Rooms
An ambitious 10 week refurbishment project will completely transform the Lancaster London’s Nine Kings Suite and Westbourne Suite, which can host receptions for up to 3,000 guests. Overseen by leading hotel designer, Alex Kravetz the project will be completed on 5 September 2011. The refurbishment is being managed by architect, Denis Day of Ashleigh House Developments Ltd, who has worked with the hotel since 1984.

The Entrance Foyer will be remodelled to showcase stunning feature edge lit mother-of-pearl glass mirror panels from Sans Souci. The glass will be framed by ziricote veneer panels, a striking and rarely used wood species from Central America which has a beautiful dark-wood grain. The unusual veneer has been produced by Alpi, a company which is particularly sensitive to the preservation of raw materials and responsible forest management with low environmental impact. The entrance floor will be replaced with marble slabs, and a bronze liquid metal finish will be applied to the door frames to create a warm and inviting first impression.

The Pre-function Area will have new bespoke carpets throughout with a dynamic and bold pattern. All the light wood panelling will be removed and replaced with fresh wall coverings from Tektura to brighten the space. Fior di Pesco marble pilasters will frame antique mirror wall panels with decorative wall sconces reflecting the light throughout.

Bronze entrance doors will lead into the main Nine Kings Ballroom. 18 stunning drop-glass 2m x 2m chandeliers will be retained and refurbished. The rest of the ceiling will be transformed. The dated mirror panels will be stripped and further coffer details will be added to layer the lighting in the vast space. Colour changing elements and dimmable controls have been detailed by Elektra Lighting to create a modern and flexible system for any style of function taking place. Low energy LED lighting will also be installed in the banqueting spaces. The existing Rosso Francia marble pilasters will be framed by additional Fior di Pesco marble columns which will house integral sandblasted backlit glass panel lighting.

Staybridge Suites Orlando Airport Opens Following Complete Renovation

IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) has announced the opening of the Staybridge Suites Orlando Airport that recently underwent a $1.3 million conversion from a Hawthorne Suites by Wyndham. The hotel is conveniently located near Orlando International Airport and overlooking Lake Lori.The four-story, 135-room hotel is conveniently located within one mile of the airport, Lockheed Martin and within close proximity to the Orlando VA Medical Center and Nemours Children’s Hospital. For entertainment, the hotel is near the Orlando Watersports Complex, golf courses, The Florida Mall and Wall Street Plaza in downtown Orlando that has restaurants and nightlife. The hotel also provides easy access to the new Amway Center and the Orlando Convention Center on International Drive. Area attractions such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld are all within 20 miles of the hotel.

The hotel features three well-designed spacious suite options (deluxe studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom/two-bath). All suites include in-room DVD/CD players; functional, well-lit work stations with ergonomic seating; speaker phones, personal voice mail and complimentary local phone calls; and fully equipped kitchens.

Guests can enjoy the hotel’s indoor pool, theater room, expanded fitness center, complimentary parking, and the Outdoor Living Room, featuring a place where guests can relax and interact in comfortable outdoor courtyard surroundings. They are also invited to get comfortable in the hotel’s Great Room for evening receptions three days a week that include complimentary refreshments, light appetizers and conversation. Guests can get Internet connectivity throughout the hotel with complimentary “Wireless Anywhere.” The hotel also features a small meeting room, accommodating up to 20.

The hotel, located at 7450 Augusta National Drive, is owned by 7450 Augusta National Drive Holdings LLC and managed by Driftwood Hospitality Management under a license agreement with a company in the InterContinental Hotels Group.

A grand carpet for the Grand’s ballroom

The majesty and grace of the ballroom at the Grand Hotel, Brighton is now continued upon its floor with a bespoke carpet from Wilton Carpets Commercial.

The 700 square metres of carpet throughout the ballroom gestures towards the heritage of the hotel with a bespoke Jacobean influenced pattern, given a contemporary feel with a large-scale pattern repeat that also balances well with the large floor space of the room. Unusually for a room coming under intensive use, the bespoke wool-rich axminster woven carpet features an uplifting warm base colour that helps to lift the rich tones used as accents within the pattern and which provides a bright feel in keeping with the hotel’s seaside location. Opened in 1864, the Grand Hotel is one of Brighton’s most famous buildings, with its Victorian architecture standing as a landmark on the seafront. The ballroom makes the most of the seaside location with a partial glazed façade.

The design was based upon a carpet originally produced for another venue in the portfolio of the grand Hotel’s operator De Vere Group and as designer, Harriet Forde, Harriet Forde Design, explains the process included revisions to all elements of the original design:

“After some initial concepts, it was decided that an existing design would prove suitable for use in the ballroom but it was obvious that it would need to be adapted to suit the space. Working with the in-house design team at Wilton Carpets, we looked at the scale of the pattern and different colour combinations. The final design suits the scale of the ballroom and the colourway helps to ‘lift’ the room giving a majestic feel while also providing soil-hiding properties.”

With its durable 80% wool 20% nylon woven axminster construction, the carpet meets the De Vere Group’s requirement for a carpet that can withstand the demands of a busy function room, disguising spills and dirt throughout an event and proving hardwearing enough to endure regular intensive use. CFA accredited contractor Gravity Flooring installed the carpet, with the Middlesex-based company also providing accurate measurements of the space at the design stage to assist with planning the layout.

“The success of the design needed to be millimetre perfect,” comments Natalie Trumper, operations, Gravity Flooring. “As with any old building, the walls in the Grand are far from straight and so we even had to account for fluctuation here to stop the bordered design looking irregular. Wilton made the carpet to our exact measurements and requirements, so that when installed the carpet appears seamless and the border runs equidistant from all four walls and at all points in the room.”

Reducing impact through transportation, the carpet was manufactured at Wilton Carpets’ Wiltshire production site and shipped directly to the Grand Hotel.

Shining Stars from Design-Conscious

Every now and then a new product comes on the market that just ticks every box – and these two new additions really do outshine the competition. Not only are they good looking, but they have both been designed utilizing LED and Fluorescent energy efficiency to great effect. Jacqui from Design-Conscious tells us more about the products…Dina is an archetypal image of a small lamp. It encompasses everything great about the hugely popular Miss K Lamp (by Philippe Starck / Flos), only ‘better’ (some may say) because it’s powered by energy efficient LEDs.

These quirky lights make a great feature and even the control of the Birdie light is intuitive. The control dimmer is a five stage touch dimmer control and is cleverly incorporated into the design through the stem. This is also what makes Birdie special; it’s a fluorescent light that is dimmable, thus avoiding one of the main downsides of most fluorescent lamps.

The Birdie Lights add cheerful character to any environment and are available in a great colour palette too.

Opening of the Renaissance Tlemcen Hotel

London Hilton on Park Lane Unveils its Latest High-Tech Suite

The Penthouse suite on the 26th floor of London Hilton on Park Lane has undergone a £500,000 refurbishment. Interior designer, Lynne Hunt, was tasked with revamping the luxurious Penthouse Suite that includes a double master bedroom, a dining room for eight people, a lounge with views over Hyde Park, a state-of-the-art bathroom and very spacious connecting room, which turns into a top end two bedroom suite. To complete the upgrade, the London Hilton on Park Lane is also introducing an optional butler service available to guests staying in the Penthouse Suite.

The contemporary suite has many stylish and unique features, such as a bespoke light feature and an electric flame fire in the living room. LE Announces Its Forecast for New Hotel Openings For 2013

409 hotels/39,162 rooms – expects net supply growth of just 0.6%-0.8% for each of the next three years.For the first time, Lodging Econometrics has announced its Forecast for New Hotel Openings for 2013. A total of 409 new hotels/39,162 guest rooms are anticipated to come online. LE also adjusted its Forecast for 2011 and 2012 down slightly, as continued economic uncertainty and the lack of construction financing still hamper development.

In 2011, 390 hotels/42,187 rooms will open, with an additional 368 hotels/40,070 rooms to open in 2012. Net supply growth, after removals from inventory, will range from 0.6%-0.8% for each of the next three years.

Interchange & Consort Hotels appoints Richard Lewis as CEO

Interchange and Consort Hotels, the parent brand of Best Western Great Britain, Beacon Purchasing and Innfutures has announced the appointment of Richard Lewis as CEO. Lewis has over 35 years experience in the hospitality and travel industries including over thirteen years in international markets. Previous senior roles include managing director Preferred Hotel Group, EMEA; COO WorldRes; VP Hotel Distribution, Turner Broadcasting CNN International; and international marketing operations director, Forte and Le Merdien Hotels.

After completing a four year management training course with the Savoy Hotel Group, London, Lewis took a number of operational roles in the U.K., Libya, Egypt and Malta and to further his cross-industry knowledge, Lewis developed his career within advertising and marketing agencies in the U.A.E and London.

Lewis ‘rejoined’ the hotel industry in the early 90’s and his background in executive positions within operations, sales, marketing, e-commerce, distribution and brand development will be of significant benefit to Best Western, as it drives forward with the successful ‘Hotels with personality’ strategy and to Beacon, as the purchasing solutions company enhances its online capability.

Commenting on his appointment Lewis said: “I am delighted to be joining Interchange & Consort Hotels at this time and look forward to building on the platform established and progress made over the past five years.”

Marriott International and Granite Broadway Development to Develop New York City’s Tallest Hotel

Marriott International, Inc. and ownership group Granite Broadway Development announced has recently signed a franchise agreement to develop the Courtyard and Residence Inn Manhattan/Central Park, a soaring, new 68-story property housing two distinctly different hotels – the 378-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel and the 261-room Residence Inn by Marriott hotel — at 1717 Broadway (at 54th Street). The multi-million dollar project will open in late 2013 and be managed by Interstate Hotels and Resorts.Designed by architect Nobutaka Ashihara, the building will rise 752 feet, nine inches high, making it the tallest stand-alone hotel building (without office or residential space) in New York. The Courtyard hotel will provide a refreshing environment for business and leisure travelers, while the Residence Inn will offer all-suite accommodation for longer stays. The property will also incorporate leased retail and restaurant space.

The hotels will share a main entrance and arrival lobby on 54th Street, with public areas for the Residence Inn on the 3rd floor and for the Courtyard on the 4th floor. Guest rooms for the Courtyard will be located on floors 6 through 32 and for Residence Inn on floors 36 through 64, with separate elevator banks to serve the guestrooms and public areas for each brand.

In addition to ground floor retail space, a leased restaurant will occupy the 2nd floor, and a 5th floor lounge and terrace with outdoor seating will have a great view overlooking Broadway. Both hotels will share a fitness facility on the 34th floor.

The 378-room Courtyard by Marriott will offer the brand’s signature “refreshing business” lobby, featuring bright contemporary design, innovative technology and flexible space. The redefined area allows guests more control and choice over their stay, with services and amenities that create a healthy balance between working and relaxing. Leading UK shower manufacturer and designer, Roman Limited, have proved that when it comes to showering you can have high performance at the same time as being water efficient, by getting their new range of valves officially accredited on the WEPLS (Water Efficiency Product Labelling Scheme) Scheme.Roman has put their shower valves through the Bathroom Manufacturer’s Association’s (BMA’s) WEPLS scheme. Marriott International Announces Its First Hotel in Benin

Marriott International has recently announced that it has signed an agreement with SHRL-Benin SA to manage an upscale, 200-room, full-service Marriott Hotels & Resorts-branded hotel in Cotonou, Benin that is planned to open in 2013. It will be the third Marriott International-branded property in sub-Saharan Africa.Located on a prime beachfront site adjacent to Cotonou’s convention centre—close to the Presidential Palace in the diplomatic and government quarter of the city and within a five-minute drive from the international airport and sea port—the hotel will be attractive to international long-haul and regional business, government and conference travellers.

The Cotonou Marriott will provide an array of services, connectivity and amenities to help business travellers achieve their goals. Its interiors will be stylish and modern, blending the latest in residential design, colour and real comfort and creating an environment that encourages work accomplishments, socializing with others and staying fit. Recreational amenities will include a private beach, outdoor swimming pool, a health & leisure club and tennis courts.

For entertainment and dining, the hotel’s five restaurants and lounges will provide guests with a range of choices, each focusing on modern classics made with quality ingredients, featuring foundational cooking and updated presentations. PAI Group – PAI Lights the Sky at the Stradey Park Hotel

The PAI Group has designed, specified and installed a colourful, eye-catching lighting scheme in the “Roof top lounge” at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli.

The hotel, a well established local landmark, is privately run by Gryphon Leisure. It’s just had a new rooftop conservatory lounge built, giving the grand old Edwardian building a contrasting and contemporary twist.Gryphon initially approached PAI to provide an audio solution for the new space. However, as soon as Paul Adams set eyes on the plans, he immediately saw the potential for lighting. He suggested this to the client, who was also convinced, and gave Adams the green light to create a scheme.

“The place was just crying out to be lit” explains Adams “It was a simple idea to basically edge light the glass panels of the roof, but one that I knew would have massive impact”. Adams conceived the lighting design with Geoff Jones from i-Vision, utilising a total of twenty one i-Vision 1200 mm colour changing Lumos linear LED strips along the glass. These back-light the roof panel blinds when drawn whilst simultaneously providing external illumination.

This results in the textured surface of the blinds – which absorb light beautifully – being lit or colour changing in a series of enriched and sumptuous hues from the inside. Simultaneously from the outside, there’s also a WOW factor as the light output shoots straight onto the glass and shimmers in the night skies.

Running the length of the roof inside the conservatory, Adams had a stainless steel plate designed and custom made, into which is recessed blue LED and Uno and Duo (ES111 75watt lamp) fittings to provide conventional white lighting. These are supported by a selection of wall and table lamps for general ambience.

Outside, the conservatory is a wood-decked terrace. Here Adams specified 22 i-Vision Lumos in-ground colour changing fittings, placed around the outside of the decking, flooding up the glass conservatory and the turret walls enclosing the terrace.

All lighting is integrated and run via a Sunlight controller and Pulsar data-packs.
For branding, PAI had two custom neon ‘Gryphon’ signs made, one for the terraced decking and the other for the main entrance.

For the audio installation, PAI specified a good quality background sound system consisting of a CD player and 3 zone mixer/amp, a Cloud zoner and 10 Australian Monitor wall speakers.

As well as its role as the residents lounge, the rooftop space is intended for use as a small function room and conference facility, so PAI added a 42 inch plasma screen for presentations.

Brintons bought out of administration

Following the news that broke yesterday (Sunday 4th September) that Brintons had been bought out of administration by the US Carlyle Group, we received the press release below.

I worked with the company on a number of hotel projects, most notably the Celtic Manor, and am a long standing admirer of their weaving skills. The recent recreation of the staircase carpet at the Renaissance St. Pancras was a tour de force from the comapny.

The divorce of design from the weaving sheds in recent years as the company sought the cheapest manufacturing solutions was always, to my mind, a negative move. Designers need an understanding of the manufacturing processes and the close unity of design and manufacturing has been a feature of UK industrial strength.

The comtemporary divorce of the two has been part of a fatal management disease infecting British politicians and industry alike. Brintons is the latest to fall victim to this disease. It will undoubtedly not be the last.

Revolution in New Zealand’s Budget Hotel Sector as Formule 1 Takes off at Auckland Airport

The opening of Formule 1 Auckland Airport on the 29th August heralded a revolution in New Zealand’s budget hotel sector.

The launch of the first new-build Formule 1 in New Zealand is part of a major new accommodation and hospitality complex at the airport that also includes fast-food outlets, a bar, and mobile phone store. The 125 room Formule 1 and the rest of the complex have been developed by Auckland International Airport.

Formule 1 is Accor’s purpose-designed budget brand that is already present in countries across Europe, South America, South Africa and in Australia. The brand is also set for major expansion in Asia.

The hotel will provide the ultimate in reliable, contemporary accommodation at the highly affordable rate. There are also double, twin and quadruple share rooms, making the hotel ideal for couples, groups and families. In addition there are five large special-access rooms.

The hotel features Formule 1’s new Cocoon concept room. The rooms are more stylish, more restful room with soft colours, rounded edges and soothing lighting, as well as extra storage space. Facilities include flat screen TVs with extra channels, wireless internet and a strong focus on sustainability, the Cocoon Room won Best Interior Design at the European Hotels Design Awards and represents a real metamorphosis for the brand, which was first introduced in 1984. Other in-room facilities include quality bedding with duvets, ensuite bathroom, individual air-conditioning and a work table. Rooms are completely sound-proofed.

The Formule 1 offers an inexpensive breakfast buffet, with more substantial meals available during the day from the various outlets in the complex, including the Szimpla Gastro Pub, health food café, and coffee shop. There is parking for up to 70 cars.

Within a few hundred metres of the hotel there is a huge supermarket, a number of additional fast food outlets, a bank, New Zealand Post and a camper van hire centre.

The hotel is managed by Accor, New Zealand’s largest hotel group. The Formule 1 Auckland Airport increases Accor’s New Zealand network to 32 hotels.

Andy Thornton furnishes Heathrow ‘super lounge’

Andy Thornton has just completed a substantial contract to supply stylish bespoke contract furniture to the new No.1 Heathrow Airport Lounge and Travel Spa, in Terminal 3 of the world’s busiest international airport. They worked closely on the exacting specification and choice of finishes with the projects interior designers Inside Out Architecture.Having supplied previously to lounges at both Gatwick and Stansted Airports both operated successfully by client No.1 Traveller, the company was delighted to be invited to supply to this flagship ‘super lounge’, which opened its doors on 11th August.

The client’s aim was to provide the ultimate pre-flight experience and create a space that suits the needs of all of Terminal 3’s departing passengers. They achieved this by creating a lounge with something for everyone, from the bustling bar and bistro, through to the quiet snug and soothing spa. Andy Thornton provided furniture solutions for all key areas.

In the main lounge area, Andy Thornton supplied a mixture of two and three seater Chesterfield sofas and matching cubes, with button-back upholstery in rich Yarwood leather. These are complemented by a number of bespoke chaise longues upholstered in a vibrant patterned Romo fabric.

In the terrace lounge area, which provides panoramic runway views, the company sourced versatile swivel chairs in chrome with seats and backs upholstered in co-ordinated Panaz fabrics. More cubes and a selection of black and white circular coffee tables with solid marble tops were also used.

To add a bit of fun, the client also specified two quirky basket egg chairs, to be suspended from the ceiling by the ‘Green Wall’, a living wall of exotic, tropical plants that creates a tranquil space for weary travellers.

In the bar area, Andy Thornton combined high-back lounge chairs, complete with lumbar cushions for an extremely comfortable sit, all upholstered in contrasting velvets together with black pedestal coffee tables. Behind these and fronting the corian-topped minimalist walnut bar are elegant contrasting black on black bar stools.

In the bistro, Andy Thornton sourced Print chairs from Dan-Form, which feature elaborate seats and backs in white plastic on chrome frames. The matching gloss white tables comprise of turned pedestals with square glacier white corian tops.

The No.1 VIP room is home to more bespoke high back chairs from Andy Thornton, whilst the company supplied the luxurious armchairs with substantial cushions upholstered in a mix of rich-coloured soft leathers for maximum comfort in the discreet cinema room. The company also provided bespoke furniture for the drawing room, Wii room and games room.

The look was completed with the liberal use of co-ordinated scatter cushions for the banquette seating, lounge chairs and sofas, successfully pulling the overall colour scheme together.

Kempinski opened hotel in Huizhou, China

With the opening of the Kempinski Hotel Huizhou, Kempinski established its presence in the city and the whole province of Guangdong. Hotel Altis completes first phase of five million euro renovations

Great Hotels of the World Luxury Collection member, Hotel Altis in Lisbon, Portugal has announced the completion of the first phase of a multi-million euro renovation.

200 guestrooms have been completely refurbished and the entrance lobby has been restored, completed at the end of August 2011.The renovation, managed by architects Cristina Santos e Silva and Ana Menezes Cardoso restores the spirit of innovation and vision of the original designer Daciano da Costa whilst creating a more modern, sophisticated and current ambiance.

The original structure was kept in the rooms, with new coatings and original woodwork replaced. New ebony and stainless steel furniture has been placed in the rooms and the décor in the hallways has been replaced as well as new carpets.

The reception lobby was renovated by the same architects as well as Joao Paciencia. The remodelling positions the service desk in the front wall of the lobby and is framed by black lacquer. A new bar and rest area fills the area of the old reception desk.

Villa Clarisse, the stunning sister property of Hôtel de Toiras, has enjoyed its early months of business since opening its French doors to guests on the 1st June 2011. The property located on a secluded side street in Saint Martin de Ré has been described as an “idyllic setting in the heart of this pretty port town”. Since opening in June 1999, the Millennium Stadium has welcomed, on average, over 1.3 million visitors per year. The stadium boasts the first fully-retractable roof in the UK and is a leading venue for multi-purpose, multi-faceted events.Vaughan Sound Installations (VSI) has worked with the Millennium Stadium historically on a number of installation projects; this includes teaming up with Security Centres to install a new fire telephone system. More recently, VSI in conjunction with CUK Audio, Baldwin Boxall and the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) completed a major refurbishment of the stadium’s audio system. Essentially the client brief was to deliver an economic, cost-effective solution with the emphasis on improving the systems operation and performance.

Technical Solutions
The WRU chose VSI to refurbish and maintain the stadiums audio system. In order to deliver best value commercially and technically VSI entered into collaboration with CUK Audio to co-ordinate and integrate the new audio solution. Community Loudspeakers are internationally recognised in the arena of sport stadia. As a result of this partnership, audio quality, intelligibility and overall coverage have been vastly improved. Additionally, in the eventuality of an emergency evacuation VSI have incorporated the new audio system with the stadium’s life safety system.

The existing Community M4 and EM 280 horns were reconfigured and reinforced by the addition of R6 Bass bins around the pitch perimeter. Powersoft K series and DC amplifiers were installed to power the front end supplemented by the original crest amplifiers. Powersoft LQ-2804 & Q-4002 amplifiers were utilised to improve the Community WET2V8 under balcony delays.

Behind the scenes, the Baldwin Boxall Vigil EVAS network router and controller monitors distribution between each of the stadium’s six racks and interfaces with the fire alarm system. A new mimic display touch-screen is installed in the stadium’s control room for match day operation together with a zoned BVRD microphone in the security room. A new enhanced data network cable links the distributed racks throughout the stadium. Processing within the main stadium bowl is provided by dual BSS Soundweb BLU 80 processers in each of the rack locations. The existing 100 v line circuits have all been reconfigured and interfaced with the new system to vastly improve communication throughout.

Morris and Webb at Standen

I’m a sucker for much of Victorian design. Inventive, creative, the birth of the machine age unleashed a wave of design, and the Victorians built an art college in every major English town to act as a seedbed for creative and revolutionary thinking. Whilst industrialists powered on devising more and more impressive production lines and mass producing items for a new consumer market (factory workers wages were initially three time the earning of agricultural workers, moving population from the land to the new cities) the revolutionaries such as Mackintosh and Morris exploited design processes to create a new aesthetic.

Standen, outside East Grinstead in Sussex is one of the finest examples of the merging of the inventive industrial processes with the respect for the past and understanding of materials that typify the best of Victorian Design. The new Morris &Co ranges were appropriately launched at Standen with an exhibition that blurred the lines between then and now. Still under restoration by the UK’s National Trust, Standen was a collaboration between architect Philip Webb and the Morris factory. A close friend of Morris who he worked alongside in the same architects practise for a while, Webb worked with Morris setting up Morris & Co. and designed many items associated with the Morris works.

Standen was a product of Webb’s architectural practise and he worked with Morris to produce a harmonious and stunning home for the Beale family. Initially the site was occupied by a 14th century farmhouse and Webb incorporated the structure into his design. As one approaches the house it is the 14th century building and a barn that dominate the view, but from the gardens at the rear the full beauty of the building becomes apparent.

The control of proportion , the sensitivity of scale makes the house sit at ease in the landscape. Comparing it with contemporary houses is like comparing Imperial and A size paper. Imperial sizes based on the human form and the golden section are easy to use in composition when drawing and lend themselves to a degree of aesthetic sub-division missing in the Intellectually created A sizes. These are a logical progression where the long side of one size makes the short side of the next size up.Emotion versus intellect. Humanity versus logic.

Travelodge Exchanges On 22 Hotels & Opens a New Hotel with Topshop

Travelodge has recently announced that it has exchanged on 22 new hotels (2,198 rooms) across the UK at a combined investment value of £165 million. As part of its new hotel exchange update, Travelodge is delighted to announce its new partnership with Arcadia Group Ltd, the UK’s largest privately owned clothing retailer. Under this new scheme, Arcadia Group Ltd will forward fund the construction of a 96-room Travelodge hotel, above its Topshop store; in Edinburgh’s retail heartland – Princes Street.

The famous grade ll listed building which houses Edinburgh’s largest Topshop store and the forthcoming new Travelodge hotel was Scotland’s very first steel frame building. The development is scheduled to open in summer 2012 and Travelodge has agreed a 35 year lease with Arcadia Group Ltd, which represents a £10 million investment. This new addition will increase Travelodge’s room stock to 1,230 rooms and 13 hotels in the Scottish capital – maintaining its title of Edinburgh’s largest hotelier.

Some of the other locations from the exchange announcement include: five London sites: Walthamstow, Enfield, Bethnal Green, Sutton and Southgate. As well as: Edinburgh Queen Street, Eastleigh, Loughborough, Sittingbourne, Bedford, Gatwick Airport, Darlington, Altrincham, Malvern, Aylesbury, Newquay, Woking, Glasgow Airport, Hemel Hempstead, Kings Lynn and Barcelona.

In addition, the Company has opened 18 hotels in the first half of 2011 and is currently building 43 hotels (4,280 rooms). Twenty one of these properties are anticipated to open before the end of this year.

Upon construction, these new sites will boost the Company’s estate to 540 hotels and 39,957 rooms. These new hotel openings will also create 1,300 new jobs across the country.

This year Travelodge will also open five hotels in London and six just before the start of the Olympic Games in 2012. These openings will strengthen Travelodge’s position as the Capital’s biggest hotelier.

On the 16th September 2011, employees from Hill Cross Furniture are taking a three day coast-to-coast cycle ride to raise funds for ATAXIA UK.The ride starts at St Bees Head and finishes at Robin Hoods Bay, a distance of approximately 190 miles.

The ride itself is an extremely tough one – so we would like you to dig deep to make the pain worthwhile!

Ataxia is a type of genetic neurological condition that affects balance, speech and co-ordination. Ataxia is progressive, meaning it gets worse with time until some people become entirely dependent on others for all their needs. Over 10,000 people in the UK have some form of Ataxia and currently there is no cure. In the last five years, the charity has spent over £3 million on research into possible treatments and cures.

IHG Opens First Holiday Inn Hotel in Colombia

IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) has recently announced the opening of the Holiday Inn Bogota-Airport in Bogota, Colombia. It is IHG’s sixth property in the country, across four brands – InterContinental® Hotels & Resorts, Crowne Plaza® Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn® Hotels and Resorts and Holiday Inn Express®. The new-build, eight-story Holiday Inn Bogota-Airport features 191 rooms and is located within ten minutes of El Dorado International Airport. Situated within the vibrant neighborhood of El Salitre, one of Bogota’s most important and modern business districts, the property is part of a mixed-use complex called Centro Empresarial Arrecife (Arrecife Corporate Center) and near the Corferias Convention Center, the United States Embassy, Bogota’s main industrial park and downtown Bogota. The Holiday Inn Bogota-Airport, located at Avenida Calle 26 #69-D-91 in Bogota, is owned by Alianza Fiduciaria S.A., under a franchise agreement with a company in the InterContinental Hotels Group. Travelodge Opens Its First Hotel at Birmingham Airport and Its 19th Hotel in the City

On Friday 26th August, the Mayor of Solihull, Cllr Irene Chamberlain and David Winstanley, Operations Director for Birmingham Airport officially opened the £9.8 million Birmingham Airport Travelodge hotel. Situated overlooking the runway on Terminal Road, the new 200 – room property is the Company’s first hotel at Birmingham Airport and the 19th Travelodge hotel in Birmingham – maintaining the budget hotel chain’s position as the biggest hotelier in the city. This new hotel opening has created 30 new jobs within the community.

Birmingham Airport Travelodge offers a range of rooms which includes, family, double and accessible rooms. All Travelodge rooms come with a luxury Hypnos king size bed, which has a royal warrant from the Queen. Each room has en-suite facilities with eco-friendly showers, a flat screen TV with 18 free digital channels, free tea and coffee making facilities and Wi-Fi.

The hotel also has a Bar Café which offers a breakfast, dinner and bar service.

To celebrate the official opening of Travelodge’s 477th hotel in Birmingham, Cllr Irene Chamberlain cut the ribbon and officially declared the hotel open for business at an opening ceremony. She also met the hotel team and took a tour of the 200-bed hotel.

In recognition of the 35,000 travellers that pass daily through Birmingham Airport, from destinations such as France, Spain, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Germany, Poland, Dubai, Pakistan and Iran – Travelodge staff have been trained to say Hello, welcome to Travelodge” in ten languages – so that they can greet international guests in their native tongue.

Birmingham Airport Travelodge is also an ideal base for plane spotting enthusiasts, as all rooms at the back of the hotel over look the airport’s busy runway. The airport’s biggest plane, an Emirates Boeing 777 which lands from Dubai every day is the main attraction for aircraft fanatics. The hotel has already been flooded with requests from guests wishing to sleep on the runway wing of the hotel so they can grab the best views.

Travelodge has invested £26.5 million in Birmingham during 2011 with the opening of four hotels. The first hotel at Birmingham’s Bull Ring Shopping Centre opened in May, followed by Birmingham Airport and finally Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham Halesowen in November. By the end of the year the hotel chain will have 21 hotels across Birmingham and have created 100 jobs.

Birmingham Airport Travelodge is being managed by local girl, Sarah Appleby, who has been working for the Company for five years. Sarah started her career at Birmingham Fort Dunlop Travelodge as a receptionist in 2006. Within six months of joining the company, ambitious Sarah fast tracked her career and moved to become the manager at Walsall Travelodge.

Crowne Plaza Albuquerque to Open after a $14 Million Renovation and Brand Change

Vaughan Sound Installations, (part of the PAI Group) in conjunction with Charnic Interiors, were instructed to complete the lighting, sound and audio visual needs for the refurbishment of the prestigious Gower Suite in the 4 star Marriott Hotel, Swansea SA1.Client Overview
The Gower Suite is the Marriott Hotel Swansea’s premier function room. With its own conservatory bar and seating for up to 300 guests, this is an ideal location for meetings, conferences & weddings. The suite offers superb facilities, conveniently splits into three smaller function rooms and would provide the perfect atmosphere for any event. The hotel itself is located in the picturesque Marina.

Anthony Brunton, Chief Engineer for the Hotel was “delighted with the flexibility of the Multimedia Presentation systems and the intuitiveness of the AMX control interface… Even the most non technical staff will have no trouble in setting up the Function Suites for any occasion.”

Technical Solutions
Vaughan Sound was appointed to replace and update the sound and lighting control systems in The Gower Suite. The new installations were able to utilise the existing cabling and this helped to minimise the costs. The TOA M9000 digital mixer was installed to provide comprehensive, user friendly control of the numerous inputs in the suite. In addition TOA ceiling loudspeakers powered by a Cloud multichannel amplifier provide even coverage for the wide range of events that take place.

For the lighting system, the Anytronics Anylight control system provided control of the numerous circuits via outstations located throughout the suite. Dimming packs, to assist with energy saving, were also installed for the existing fittings together with the digital dimming of the newly installed fluorescent fittings. This gave control over the selection of lighting scenes to suit the mood of the event.

To work with the flexibility of the Gower Suite, Vaughan Sound Installations installed each partitioned area with projectors, retractable electric screens, six button control systems & Laptop/DVD connection points that can be operated on a standalone basis when the suite is split or utilised as one larger venue as required.

All local input connection points were cabled to a matrix system within The Manager’s Office enabling the display media to be delivered to any screen or combination of screens as required allowing each partitioned room to operate independently. A particularly useful feature when used in full room mode; the two outer screens will display one presentation with different media displayed to the centre screen.

The end solution is the cost effective control of the ideal sound and lighting solutions for the function suite with
lighting and AV systems that offer flexibility and ease of use.

The Rezidor Hotel Group has opened its second hotel in Georgia: the Radisson Blu Hotel Batumi, Georgia. The stunning new landmark with wave-inspired glass façade offers 168-rooms in a prime beachfront location within easy reach of Seaside Boulevard, Batumi’s business, commercial and nightlife destination, and minutes from the International airport.The hotel’s minimalistic design was overseen by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi. Objectives
To deliver one of the UK’s greenest commercial hotel developments – in line with East Midland Airport’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2012. The hotel features 218 bedrooms, full conference and meeting facilities, a swimming pool and health club.

Additional features
In line with East Midlands Airport’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2012, the hotel utilises a range of low energy technologies to reduce the energy demand of the building; supplemented by an on-site Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engine with a Pure Plant Oil (PPO) Tri-Generation Energy Centre, to export electricity to the national grid outside of normal occupancy hours. This innovative system collects and stores waste heat in a thermal store to heat and cool the whole hotel, delivering an 87% reduction in CO2 and supplying 90% of the consumed energy from a renewable source.

The build also incorporates a number of Sustainable Construction Techniques. A sustainable Surface Water Drainage system with porous paving in the car park; attenuation tanks and a rainwater harvesting system is also integrated into the design of the hotel to serve the WC’s in the building and water the external landscaped areas.

Challenges
A key challenge was the fact that a project requirement was to achieve an excellent environmental rating at an economically viable price point. In addition, one of the coldest winters on record provided challenges at various stages of the build.

Solution
• Fundamental to the successful delivery has been a detailed understanding of all of the cost drivers in hotel construction ensuring value is maximised at every level.
• Using cost consultants and project managers with experience of delivering more than 3,500 rooms across many different hotel brands.

Outcome
The hotel reaffirms Rezidor’s position as one of Europe’s leading airport hotel operators with 27 hotels (7,096 rooms) currently in operation and a further 3 hotels (938 rooms) in the development pipeline.

The Crowne Plaza Tuxpan is in a prime location situated on Carretera a La Barra Rd Km 6.5 in La Calzada neighborhood. The hotel is at the edge of the spectacular Tuxpan River, distinguished by the tranquility of its warm waters, and just five minutes from the beach. Goettsch Partners Wins Design Competition for New District Site in China

A master plan by Goettsch Partners (GP) has been selected as the winning scheme in the design competition for a prominent site in the new Pazhou district in Guangzhou, China. Three urban parcels form the triangular site, which is planned for seven buildings totaling 428,000 square meters. The client and developer is Poly Real Estate (Group) Co., Ltd., China’s leading state-owned real estate company. Set along the Pearl River Delta, the Pazhou district anchors the city’s expansion to the east. The winning master plan establishes a framework for the three-parcel site as a vibrant and iconic commercial destination that merges the new riverfront with the larger urban fabric.

A nautilus-like spiral defines the organizing concept for the complex, with its physical center providing a direct visual link to the city’s historic pagoda. The centerpiece of the development is a large public piazza, which helps unify the three urban parcels while clearly segregating pedestrian and vehicular activity. Sustainable design initiatives start with a series of elevated bridges that provide unobstructed breezeways and shade for the ground level. These bridges also house indoor social spaces linking the towers and are topped with habitable garden spaces that minimize the urban heat-island effect.

A landmark tower at the northeast corner of the site anchors the development in the skyline, positioned for maximum visibility and presence. The six other buildings encircle the piazza and are designed with podium-level retail and dining venues that activate the public spaces. Sky bridges between buildings define the perimeter of the piazza and link the complex, while maximizing views to the riverfront and adjacent canal. These elevated structures also form gateways that lend an overall permeability to the complex.

In the piazza, a terraced court rises from the site’s lower-level pedestrian access, passing beneath the development’s main connecting roadway. Lined with retail and restaurants, this court features a series of distinct landscaped amenities and terminates at a jewel-like exhibition facility, intended to be an educational and cultural venue. This entire network of pedestrian pathways also has a direct link to the area’s subway lines, providing convenient and intuitive access to the development.

Identified by a larger plan as parcels 4, 5 and 10, the three urban plots each includes a mix of commercial functions. Parcel 4 totals 210,000 square meters, featuring the landmark office and hotel tower, as well as a separate serviced apartment tower; the two are organized in a semicircular arrangement fronting the main piazza. Parcel 5 comprises 100,000 square meters, with three office towers triangulated on the development’s southernmost portion and configured around a secondary public plaza. Parcel 10 totals 118,000 square meters, including an office tower and a hotel, aligned along the adjacent canal. While each building will have its own unique identity, collectively, the buildings will form an ascending spiral, defining a singular urban gesture for the complex.

The Pazhou project represents GP’s fourth major assignment with Poly Real Estate. Other projects include a 159,000-square-meter mixed-use development in Deyang, including hotel, office, conference, and cultural functions; a 200-meter-tall office building in Shunde; and a two-tower, 150,000-square-meter office complex in Chengdu. As one of the largest real estate developers in China, Poly Real Estate operates 119 subsidiaries across 35 cities nationwide.

Hamilton to launch new multi-room audio system at Decorex – Stand J317

Decorative electrical wiring accessories manufacturer Hamilton Litestat is launching a brand new audio system at this year’s Decorex (stand J317). Showcased this year will be the new Mercury Multi-room Audio System – a simple-to-operate music system that gives the user complete control over how, when and where their music is played throughout the home.

Up to four music sources are plugged into a discreet hub and fed into up to four rooms. There are input options for a radio, two analogue devices such as CD players, and an MP3 player. In the case of an iPhone or iPod being the source of the music, Hamilton is producing a stylish Mercury Wall-mounted iDock to connect the device to the hub.

Each destination room features user-friendly wall-mounted control plates for easy access, although the music can also be managed by an infra-red remote control or a two-way WiFi device such as an iPod, iPhone or tablet, as it comes with its own official app. This level of two-way control ensures that the user can browse and select the exact music they want to listen to at any time.

The small, slim control plates come in a range of Hamilton’s existing plate designs, providing the option of matching them with other wiring accessories such as light switches and sockets. However, there is also a sleek new black touch screen design available.

Speakers come in a variety of formats depending on the destination room including ceiling pairs, compact versions – ideal for smaller rooms such as en-suites – and even outdoor speakers for further flexibility.

New Club Quarters Hotel and Restaurant Development Takes Shape at London’s Kingsway

International hotel operator, Club Quarters, is developing a new hotel and restaurant scheme at Kingsway, London WC2. With an outdoor terrace to Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the 10,000 sq ft restaurant building and 160 room hotel development are currently on site and due to open early in 2012. Leisure property specialists Davis Coffer Lyons has been appointed by Club Quarters to seek an flagship restaurant occupier for the space, which has open plan layout and exceptional floor to ceiling heights.

Club Quarters already operates 14 hotels across the UK and the USA, including three in London located at Trafalgar Square, St Pauls, and the City, primarily aimed at business travellers.

Hilton Worldwide has recently announced the signing of four new Hampton by Hilton hotels in Turkey, as it expands its brand offering in what is a key development market for Hilton Worldwide, with 34 hotels either currently operating or under development in the country. The four new signings are: Hampton by Hilton Istanbul Kayasehir; Hampton by Hilton Rize; Hampton by Hilton Corlu; and Hampton by Hilton Gaziantep.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, Europe and Africa, Hilton Worldwide, said, “We have already seen significant growth of our Hilton Hotels & Resorts, DoubleTree by Hilton and Hilton Garden Inn brands in Turkey and now we have a further four Hampton by Hilton hotels under development. These latest signings join the existing Hampton by Hiltons currently under development in Ordu and Bursa, which are expected to open later this year.”

The new-build hotel will be located in the heart of Kayasehir, a new satellite city currently under construction to the north of Istanbul, which will be home to more than 250,000 residents. Hampton by Hilton Istanbul Kayasehir will feature 144 bedrooms and form part of a mixed use development including a shopping centre, leisure facilities, restaurant outlets and office space. The hotel will benefit from the extension of the Istanbul metro line, a new highway and a third Bosphorus bridge – all key infrastructures improvements either planned or underway. The hotel build will consist of a six floor tower with three meeting rooms, a 24-hour fitness suite and car parking. Overlooking the Black Sea and located on the main coastal road to Artvin, the new-build Hampton by Hilton Rize will feature 90 bedrooms and will be located approximately seven kilometres from the city centre. Rize is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination, with the local area known for its incredible mountain range, which attracts visitors for outdoor activity tours. The hotel will also benefit from the city’s organized industrial zone, which boasts significant industry including tea production, nut processing and food manufacturing. The nearest airport is Trabzon, which is approximately 72 kilometres away. The 4-star Drayton Manor Hotel officially opened its doors to guests on Monday 15th August.

Drayton Manor Theme Park’s Managing Director, Colin Bryan, Hotel Manager, Martin Wright and popular Thomas & Friends™ character, The Fat Controller, were at the launch to cut the ceremonial ribbon and welcome the hotel’s first guests personally. It starts with a blob of pigment. Dipped into a furnace full of molten glass. What happens then is, as with all highly skilled craftsmanship, a little piece of magic. Huffing and puffing, toing and froing. Plenty of heat. The roar of burners in the furnaces drowning out conversation. Heat. My shirt sticks to me and I start trying to remember the camera specs. At what point does a digital camera melt?The two craftsmen work in near silence, a dance around the work area from furnace to bench, sensing each other’s movements, swinging their lances(’punteys’) with their points of molten glass in an unchoreographed but much practiced dance. Cheeks puffed, they blow and heat again in the furnace. The globule grows and is shaped by blowing down the hollow bow pipe, and fondled with gloves blackened by scorching. Sparks rise from newspaper pads , the continuous roar of the furnaces, the heat of the glass forming a counter point to the pauses and gestures.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts (Fairmont) has recently announced a new property scheduled to open in 2014 in Taiyuan, a historic city in Northern China and the capital of Shanxi Province.The luxury hotel will be situated along the Fen River offering spectacular views, yet within walking distance of the new Central Business District in Taiyuan. Shanxi Jun Lian Real Estate Development Co., Ltd. (Junlian) is developing the Sumeru project, a mixed-use development featuring luxury residential accommodations, a 7,000 square meter private club and retail facilities in addition to the hotel. The nearby convention and exhibition facilities, as well as a new major sports center currently under construction, will generate substantial business and leisure travel and demand. Baulmann Leuchten Completes Work on the MS HANSEATIC

During the period of May 28th to June 10th 2011 the 5-star explorer cruise liner MS HANSETIC, part of the Hapag Lloyd fleet, had to undergo regular maintanance works in a shipyard in Hamburg. As a part of these works all cabins and suites had been refurbished according to the contemporary designs of the German interior designer, Wilfried Köhnemann.

All cabins now offer remarkable comfort and an individual atmosphere for a maxiumum of 184 guests, having “on board” table lamps and wall-mounted luminaires produced by Baulmann Leuchten.

Mint Hotel completed in Central Amsterdam

The newly completed 550-bedroom hotel for Mint Hotel Group is the latest and most prominent element of Amsterdam’s Eastern Dock Island regeneration project, sitting within Erik van Egeraat’s masterplan, adjacent to Amsterdam Centraal Train Station. The hotel occupies the sharp point of the development, with the historic canal basin directly to the south. The remainder of the Eastern Dock Island is densely developed and carefully sculpted with housing, offices, the Amsterdam City library and a music conservatoire.

Bennetts Associates’ hotel rises from eight to eleven floors and comprises of three linked blocks of bedrooms above two public floors that contain conference and dining facilities.

The composition of the building ensures that the bedrooms, terraces and the SkyLounge rooftop bar make the most of the views across the waterside and Amsterdam Old Town. The large suites, which sit in the angular corners of the building, have panoramic views across the dock whilst the central courtyard increases daylight to the internal bedrooms.

To the south and west of the hotel, the public areas spill out onto a pedestrian quayside, facing the city and acting as a “shop window” for the hotel. Road access is beside the railway embankment, contained by a continuous, elevated range of buildings on all the masterplan sites.

The hotel’s facades are a complex series of layers, consisting of moveable perforated shutters, glazing and brickwork, echoing the spirit of traditional Dutch architecture. The palette of materials in each part of the building responds to the different architectural styles around the site: the south-facing elevation incorporates the most brickwork in response to the architecture of the old town which it faces, whilst the east and west facades and bridges between the three blocks are predominantly glazed, reflecting the architectural language of the more contemporary parts of the city. All internal courtyard-facing facades are clad in red zinc, responding to the changing quality of light to this central area.

The hotel is the third major project that Bennetts Associates has undertaken for Mint Hotel Group and follows the practice’s recent completion of a 583-bedroom hotel near the Tower of London. The firm’s first hotel, the 460-bedroom Mint Hotel (formerly City Inn) in Westminster, was completed in 2003.

Delicately illuminating the deep recessed ceiling of the Equus Bar at the Royal Horseguards Hotel London, suspended strings of clear acrylic shapes offer subtle sparkle to the bar and reception areas. Designed in collaboration with STS Design, to give a contemporary organic focus to the coffered ceiling with glints of bright light whilst highlighting the classic Victorian features, each recess houses hundreds of random acrylic shapes, all highly polished to catch the light. Eight low voltage 35w IRC downlighters are encased within each stainless steel ceiling plates giving flashes of brilliant light, reflected by the individually strung acrylic drops.

Part of a major restoration for this magnificent 5 star Guoman hotel, the Equus bar is now an eclectic mix of furnishings combined to recreate the ‘Gentleman’s Club’ atmosphere of yesteryear.

Items by Ila, for example, are hand-made in the Cotswolds, England. The company uses exotic ingredients — such as rose oil from India and argan oil from Morocco — and takes pride in its quality control.

Ila’s founder, Ramen says, regularly visits the oil farms to make sure she gets something that’s genuine and 100-percent pure.

“The Moroccan argan oil is especially fantastic because it’s rich in anti-aging fatty acids and it’s a ‘dry oil’ so there’s no greasy residue on the skin,” says Ramen.

To jump-start the new initiative, Ramen summoned GHM spa trainers and managers from as far away as Miami and Muscat for a two-week training session in Chiang Mai. Manufacturers detailed the new lines and Ramen reinforced the hotel group’s commitment to this new, expanded realm of responsibility.

“Our guests want upscale amenities, to be sure, but these days they’re as concerned — I’d say more concerned — about green solutions and green products,” says Ramen. “It’s not just the planet people are concerned about, it’s their own bodies. They’re after health before wealth.”

Once the makeover is complete in Thailand, Ramen — a 17-year veteran of the spa industry and native of Canada — will see to the same changes on the spa menu at one of Asia’s most renowned resorts, The Nam Hai in Vietnam.

From there, the new menus and products will debut at The Chedi Muscat in Oman, The Setai in Miami, The Legian in Bali and The Chedi Club Tanah Gajah, also in Bali.

By the time the six-month project wraps, all GHM wellness specialists will qualify as experts on what makes the new products unique and how to apply those lines in the new treatments.

More than just being green

Lano Carpets has unveiled its pioneering environmental policy, The Green Signature, with the aim of showing customers and suppliers that its intention to become a sustainable business works for everyone. Through reduction, recycling and rethinking, Lano Carpets is committed to environmental stewardship throughout the sourcing, manufacturing and distribution processes, with the clear intention of minimising its environmental impact through both direct and indirect practices. Moving towards ISO 14001 certification, Lano Carpets will also work closely with suppliers and customers to ensure careful monitoring and analysis of the impact of its products and processes.

During the last six years, Lano has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% and is hoping to obtain an overall reduction of 60% by 2012. Energy consumption has been reduced by 25% in the last seven years and as part of the Belgian Flemish Covenant; by 2012 the manufacturer has to reach benchmark energy efficiency and CO2 emissions to the levels of the best international standards.

This commitment to minimising emissions has seen a continual investment in reduction measures since 2008, including the installation of solar panels on the main 12-hectare production site. These solar panels form one of the largest installations in Western Europe and any energy not consumed by Lano Carpets is entered into the main grid. At full capacity, the solar panels produce enough electricity to power 2000 homes.

Reduction of waste is also marked as a key good environmental practice in The Green Signature and Lano Carpets is already separating 97% of its waste in to combustible and recyclable fractions, with the aim to reach 100%. Combustible fractions are transformed into pellets that are used as an alternative to fossil fuels in the cement industry, while recyclable fractions are reused as raw material. Recycled content yarns, such as Econyl by Aquafil, will also be used in increasing measures. The 100% recycled content polyamide yarn is already being used in the Manhattan carpet tile collection produced by Lano Flooring Solutions.

Lano Carpets has also substantially reduced its wastewater production by 15% in the last three years, as well as improving its quality, reducing the environmental impact of its wastewater by 20% and now has abandoned the use of deep groundwater for its production processes. Instead the manufacturer now uses industrial water from a purifying plant sourcing surface water.

In the process of developing sustainable recycling initiatives for both manufacturing processes and post consumer waste, Lano Carpets is working closely with the industry, including being a founding member of the Optimum pilot carpet tile recycling programme. The manufacturer aims to provide workable and sustainable solutions to recycling. With development towards a more sustainable footprint, Lano Carpets is also evaluating the environmental impact of its products through life cycle analysis. Conducted by an independent third party, the LCA helps Lano to identify impacts at every stage of a product’s life from cradle to grave and allows Lano Carpets to identify opportunities for improvement.

The Green Signature also sets out Lano’s commitment to good corporate citizenship and its social responsibility, including founding core values of honesty, integrity, respect, dialogue and accountability throughout all its activities. Collaborating with architects Bennetts Associates, the RSC has been working on a major redevelopment of its Stratford-upon-Avon site culminating in various new communal dining and seating spaces.

The Waterside terrace saw the installation of the striking R+W Galvanised steel bistro tables and benches, providing a durable dining solution to create a dramatic industrial contrast with the elegance of the brick Art Deco building.

New restaurant, bar and F&B offering for Brighton hotel

PURE Pop-up Restaurants & Events has announced a new partnership with The Royal York Hotel, Brighton.

The collaboration, which will see a new F&B concept in every aspect of the boutique hotel from bespoke conference and banqueting menus and room service, to private dining in the Karaoke pods and a new concept restaurant and bar, starts this summer as an extended partnership with the 51-bed, 4* hotel. Pop Restaurant and Bar at The Royal York Hotel will unite a sumptuous mix of city chic with bohemian seaside charisma in a vibrant and bustling Brighton surrounding, just minutes from the famous Palace Pier.

POP will be managed by Nicola Delmege, a well-known face in Brighton having owned and run The PV @ The Jury’s Out, Brighton since 2003. Evensus Ltd owner and managing director, Jerome Ibanez will retain overall management of the venue in partnership with the hotel.

Intellectual Property – Government Responds To Hargreaves Review

Are designers supported? Not if it means UK unregistered design rights protection is reduced from 10 to 3 years!

The Government today announced plans to support economic growth by modernising UK intellectual property laws. Accepting the recommendations made in the independent Hargreaves Review which estimate a potential benefit to the UK economy of up to £7.9 billion, Chancellor George Osborne said, “Our future depends on exploiting knowledge and ideas to their full potential and the Government is committed to build upon this country’s great strength in intellectual property, ultimately, success will come down to the creativity of UK people and innovation by businesses, not Government action”. This is true. Anti Copying in Design (ACID) welcomes the Government’s commitment, “To try to create the best conditions to encourage innovation and growth”. However, according to ACID’s CEO Dids Macdonald, “On the one hand Government is saying how important design is to the UK economy (£23 billion invested in 2009) and on the other hand design support could be diluted. I am extremely concerned that the Government wants further research on whether to eliminate national unregistered design rights and bring UK unregistered rights in line with EU. This would mean for 99% of the UK’s 232,000 designers who do not register their rights (only 2111 designs were registered last year), they would have their protection cut from 10 to 3 years. This doesn’t seem to make fair sense when comparisons are made with a songwriter or artist who will get copyright protection for their lifetime plus 70 years after their death. European designers also benefit from unfair competition law which kicks in and runs alongside the rights so once the 3 year period is over, there is still something that can be done. In the UK designers can only rely on passing off which is difficult to pursue and costly, particularly for small businesses.

ACID is encouraged to hear that a fast track IP small claims Court may become a reality, subject to impact assessment, and will seek every opportunity to engage with the UKIPO and Ministers to ensure that this happens. This will go a long way in providing easier access for small IP claims and we hope this will provide a much needed deterrent to those who prey on small businesses. Key to its success would be the right IP training for District Judges.

ACID also welcomes the publication of an updated IP Crime Strategy and hopes that the promised action plan to deal with the increased threat from IP crime online will become a reality. This will enable the UK to robustly and proactively protect its IP interests internationally. Micro firms and SMEs need and should demand a sound IP framework where infringement can be satisfactorily and effectively enforced. Confidence will be lost if the constant threat of infringement means that IP creators cannot be sure of ROI. If innovators are disincentivised this will result in less consumer choice, fewer jobs, and less economic opportunity in the future.

ACID actively supports any moves to improve and enable licensing opportunities, which could be facilitated by the creation of a Digital Copyright Exchange. Before this happens, however, we believe that there is a necessity to clarify competition issues – with full industry consultation – before a framework for discussions is set in place. Adequate security standards must also be put in place to ensure accuracy, so that a DCE would not become a vehicle for misuse by those who may be able to register the rights of others. ACID will be pleased to support the IPO in developing these plans and the viability of designs inclusion in a DCE.

Despite the fact that Government has finally recognized design’s importance to the UK economy, ACID is disappointed to note that there is still no recommendation to have parity of IP rights. ACID has presented an arguable case to bring unregistered design right in line with copyright. Current UKIPO policy is that most design infringement may be inadvertent but, to date, have provided little or no evidence to support this view. ACID’s own research indicates the opposite: 89.7% of companies believe design infringement is blatant and deliberate.

Whilst we are frustrated with the continuing obsession with “further research” rather than real action, ACID will continue to enter into positive debate with the UKIPO to present further arguments supporting their objective for parity of unregistered rights.

CSD Develops Membership Collaboration in China

Following on from the business interest focused around the meeting of Premier Wen Jiabao with Prime Minister David Cameron earlier this month the Chartered Society of Designers (CSD) has announced a major collaboration which will see membership of the Society made available to designers throughout mainland China, Taiwan, Macao and Hong Kong.At a signing ceremony in Beijing on Tuesday 5 July, Chief Executive of CSD, Frank Peters signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mr. Xing Lei, the Chief Executive of the Dragon Design Foundation (DDF) which sees the two organisations working together to promote the highest standards of professional design practice in China.

Commenting on the collaboration Frank Peters said, “This is truly a major event not just for CSD and DDF but most importantly for the design profession and those who receive the benefits design can bring to everyday life. It is a collaboration that benefits designers, commerce and ultimately society. We are continually reminded that the world is watching China to see how it will tackle issues of manufacturing and its effect on our environment and we share those concerns but we cannot just watch. We have all shared the benefits of China’s global repositioning and therefore we have a responsibility to engage, share knowledge, offer support and assist in creating a sustainable industrial model and professional design practice has a major role to play in this strategy.”

The signing of the MoU comes six years after CSD commenced its discussions with DDF at their inaugural design festival in Qingdao. Over this period the Society had discussions with the major design discipline organisations in China as well as industry, educational institutions and government representatives.

Mr. Xing Lei of DDF said, “It was clear from our first meeting with CSD that there was a mutual desire to help designers develop their profession in preparation for the difficult tasks ahead in developing a sustainable economy which respects the values of people and the environment. The world recognises the leading role the UK plays in design and it is also aware of the global power of China as a producing and consuming nation. It makes perfect sense for the professional body for design in the UK and the leading design foundation in China, both of which represent designers across all disciplines, to collaborate in bringing together designers from both nations for mutual development and benefit.’ He added, ‘The standards operated by CSD are respected by DDF and we will be promoting these throughout China”.

The CSD membership structure and the CSD Genetic Matrix on which it and other programmes are based will be adopted by DDF and promoted across the professional design sector in China.

Chris Ramsden, President of CSD commenting on the signing said, “The importance of this agreement cannot be overstated coming at a time when design collaboration has such a critical role to play in solving the issues we all face. The Society has worked relentlessly over the past decade to establish and refine a structured basis for professional practice that harmonises with other professional sectors and design communities in other countries and this agreement is a great endorsement of the Society and an achievement for the UK design profession”.

Restaurant redesign at Killerton House

For the first time in the 117-year history of the National Trust, one of Britain’s largest and most respected charitable organisations, an external agency has been brought in to oversee a major interior design project. Cornwall-based designers Absolute Interiors were commissioned to breathe new life into the tea rooms at Killerton House, the 18th Century mansion located on a 6400 acre Devonshire estate near Exeter. After a record visitor year in 2010 (in excess of 140,000) the National Trust felt that the ground floor venue needed a facelift.

To create a new restaurant space that would pay tribute to the heritage of the estate and its period features in a contemporary but sensitive way, teh designers spent one month weaving elements of the Killerton story into the renovation work and adding layers of detail inspired by various physical aspects of the existing estate. The ‘Killerton Kitchen’ restaurant as it is now known includes reclaimed furniture and floor stencils that allude to the interiors of Killerton’s Prayer room, Flower room and Housekeeper’s Room.

Meanwhile, quirky touches such as a recycled yoghurt pot counter-top, teapot lights and bespoke montage wallpaper featuring family photographs of the original estate owners and founders, the Acland family, give the new space a fresh and endearing ‘talking point’ quality.

“We felt deeply honoured to be working with the National Trust,” says Helen Blake “The estate itself is magnificent but there was a clear need to revitalise the ambience and character of the restaurant space. With a project like this we obviously wanted to respect its historic value and heritage while adding a new sense of appeal and interest for visitors. There was also a need to be highly practical with the design work as the interior is regularly well-used. We hope people will feel the new restaurant has a genuine ‘wow factor’ but also that it blends seamlessly with everything that Killerton represents.”

Killerton’s General Manager Phillip Smart adds, “This was a real first for the National Trust so we had to get it right. Killerton is a lovely place that continues to draw thousands of visitors every year. To move forward and retain the appeal of the estate we needed to ensure that the new restaurant area would be something that retained the spirit of Killerton but also something that would really turn heads and add to the visitor experience. It was a pleasure to work with Absolute as they made it their mission to completely understand exactly what we needed to achieve. Their creativity and ideas were refreshing and incredibly perceptive and the feedback we’ve received so far about the design work has been excellent.”

Roman Creates Frameless Hinged Door

Roman has added a bespoke frameless hinged door to their luxurious Sculptures range of enclosures. The bracing on the hinged door has been completely stripped away for true minimalist statement piece.The Bespoke Frameless Hinged Door has been carefully designed to complement modern bathroom décor and to meet the demand for frameless enclosures which offer a spa-like finish for the bathroom. Roman’s team of designers have crafted hinges that can be secured directly onto your wall, allowing for a fully frameless finish.

The striking hinged door is manufactured from the highest quality components, with chrome on brass self-closing hinges and stainless steel feature handle. It also features 10mm thick toughened safety glass that gives a heavy and luxurious finish. It is available as a stand alone product for the alcove situation, or it can be installed with an inline panel for a larger space.

Travelodge Unveils Unique ‘Metro’ Hotel Model to Accelerate Growth

Travelodge has announced that it will be seeking to develop ‘Metro’ (small) style hotels, in prestigious locations and in office blocks across the UK; in a bid to meet the growing demands of its customers. These properties which will be between 20 to 40 rooms in size, will allow Travelodge to build small hotels in highly priced, much sought after locations and occupied office buildings across the UK. The desired locations will include:

• The City of London
• London Boroughs such as: Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, Fulham and Richmond
• Major UK cities such as: Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Cardiff, York, Bristol, Chester, St Albans and Edinburgh
• The coastline of the UK
• Popular holiday hotspots such as: Cornwall, Devon, the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands and near to theme parks

The ‘Metro’ hotel model will allow the hotel chain to open properties near to existing popular Travelodge’s in locations where larger development sites are either not available or have unrealistic price expectations. In addition to enabling the budget hotelier to open in suburban locations where larger sites may not be deemed desirable by local authorities and development land is at a premium.

Properties that will be considered under this new scheme include: floors in office buildings, business parks, pubs, old cinemas / theaters, snooker halls, listed buildings, retail outlets and derelict buildings.

The desire to build smaller Travelodge hotels has been inspired by two successful development ventures the company invested in during 2010. The first initiative was opening a ‘Metro’ style prototype hotel in one of Edinburgh’s busiest tourist areas (Rose Street which is just off Princes Street). Travelodge built a hotel in a Georgian listed building which also houses two bars and a restaurant. The 43-room hotel sits above the three properties and has a small entrance sandwiched between the bar and restaurant. The hotel has become one of the company’s top performing hotels due to its key location..

The second venture to support the ‘Metro’ style Travelodge concept is the successful conversion of 52 Innkeeper’s Lodge’s into the Travelodge estate following their purchase from Mitchells & Butlers in July 2010. The majority of these acquired hotels are under 40 rooms and have proven to be highly profitable additions for Travelodge. A prime example is the 18-room Southgate Travelodge, in the London borough of Enfield, which has been full nearly every night since acquiring it. There is little competition nearby and there are no development opportunities within the local vicinity, despite the clear demand for hotel rooms.

This new building approach will run alongside Travelodge’s existing growth strategy to expand to 1,100 hotels and 100,000 rooms by 2025. The ‘Metro’ style properties will still be called Travelodge hotels and the room size will be based on a standard double Travelodge room (15sqft)

The ‘Metro’ Travelodge’s will be run by existing managers of nearby larger Travelodge hotels and will provide the perfect training ground for trainee managers, recruited via Travelodge’s new Apprenticeship programme – JuMP (Junior Management Programme).

This announcement also ensures that Travelodge will continue to be the most active developer in the hotel market. Since the collapse of Lehman brothers, the company has opened or exchanged on over 14,000 rooms/4.5m sq ft, more than any other leisure company in Britain. Travelodge has also become the largest hotel brand in: London, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Cambridge.

Over the last five years Travelodge has heavily focused on city centre growth to rebalance its portfolio – away from roadside locations. Today these motorway and trunk route sites represent just 25% of the company’s hotel stock with the remaining quarter in suburban, seaside and tourist locations.

Travelodge currently has 472 hotels (over 32,000 rooms) across the UK and is currently building 40 hotels this year.
