Leading hotel and restaurant supplier Forbes Group has been dispatching tables, table protectors and table covers of all kinds to Paris in time for Spring 2011. Nearly one hundred Forbes Alu-Lite tables are heading to the Shangri-La, Paris. The new five star hotel was originally built in 1896 for the great-nephew of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, and has breathtaking views of Paris. The building is listed as of historic importance, so the fabric of the property is a high priority. The easily carried, lightweight aluminium tables, with the leg retention feature, made them the ideal choice for the hotel. They will be used with Forbes’ table protectors, which reduce noise levels and add comfort for clients. Protective table-coverings have also been dispatched to the Four Seasons Hotel George V in the French capital.
Refurbished and reopened last autumn, the Hotel Royal Monceau Raffles selected a wide range of fabric products from the Forbes Group. These include table skirting, conference cloth drop covers, table protectors and simple-fit table covers. Forbes Group was selected for the quality and competitive price of its British-manufactured products.
The Westin Paris-Vendôme, overlooking the Place de la Concorde, is celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2011. Alongside a renovation of its 440 guest rooms and suites, the hotel has taken delivery of over one hundred Alu-Lite tables, in round, rectangular and semi-circular shapes, for maximum flexibility of use in banquet, conference, and restaurant areas.
Half an hour from Paris, towards Disneyland, the Paxton Résidence Hôtel Spa has recently ordered 125 drop covers for its conference rooms. Tailor-made for the hotel’s tables, the drop covers have flat panels to the front and sides, with an inset panel to the corners giving a pleat effect in the drop to the floor, for a professional finish.
This success suggests that Forbes’ attendance at the Paris Equip’Hotel trade exhibition in November, and its local French office, in Châtelet-en-Brie, continue to pay dividends for the Herefordshire manufacturer. Forbes MD Peter Graville is bullish. ‘We are pleased with the results of our export efforts and expect to continue expanding sales in overseas markets’.

And with 1,360 guest rooms, 75,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, and a 446-slip private marina, the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina is no exception. Landmark hotel The Crest, located in the heart of Kings Cross and considered to have some of Sydney’s best views, has re-opened as the Mercure Sydney Potts Point and will return a much-needed 227 rooms to Sydney’s tight room supply. The owners, Australand, have appointed Accor to manage the property after it had been closed for almost two years. The hotel’s relaunch comes at a time when Potts Point and the surrounding Kings Cross and Darlinghurst areas are undergoing a real gentrification that has brought a touch of class to their urban edginess. A high level of development in the commercial, retail and residential sectors has seen Potts Point become one of Sydney’s most vibrant communities, with more than 250 restaurants, cafes and bars within walking distance of the hotel.
The former Crest has legendary status in Sydney’s hotel scene and was recently upgraded with a $30 million refurbishment, with new furniture and fittings and a funky, modern design by Marques Interiors.
Set high on Victoria Street above Kings Cross Station, the Mercure Sydney Potts Point offers spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Sydney’s east and boasts a huge outdoor terrace and four meeting rooms for up to 300 delegates so it’s perfect for both business and leisure travellers.
Sydney has suffered a massive rooms shortage since 2000, with Accor’s Sydney hotels consistently running between 80% and 90% occupancy throughout 2010, so the addition of these quality rooms will have an enormous impact on the city’s infrastructure. The Mercure will effectively provide the first “new” rooms in Sydney since the Ibis King St Wharf opened in 2008.
Within walking distance of the Mercure are a host of attractions including great boutique shopping on Macleay St, several theatres, Tusculum, Elizabeth Bay House and more. Embarkation Park, Fitzroy Gardens and the Royal Botanic Gardens are all easily accessible on foot.
In addition to being at the heart of Sydney’s premier dining and entertainment district, the Mercure is also just a short stroll from cosmopolitan Woolloomooloo and just one train stop from Martin Place in the city centre. Bondi Beach is about 10 minutes drive away.

The W Lounge is a contemporary expression of British culture, reflecting the duality of the Englishman. Roman, one of the UK’s leading shower manufacturers and designers, is launching a brand new collection of stylish shower valves, to perfectly complement their range of enclosures, wetrooms and bath screens. The new competitively priced range presents 17 different options, incorporating concealed, semi-concealed and exposed designs, along with drench heads and multi-mode hand showers. These are available in a choice of cubist, cylindrical and oval design options and you can select from fixed, or adjustable height designs.
The Roman valve collection has been UK designed, specifically for the UK market. The designs complement the current market trends and sit comfortably with other brassware styles available for the bathroom. They utilise ceramic disc technology which ensures the valves are drip free, long life and solid – this is a reliable tried and tested technology.
The range has also been designed with ease of Installation in mind. It features fast fit plumbing connections with built in eze fix connectors and eco filters – these come as standard and don’t need to be ordered separately. These eze fix connectors reduce installation time and simplify the process, as well as making future maintenance straightforward.
All the valves in the range meet or exceed UK and European standards. The valves feature an instant cut off in the event of hot or cold water failure and safely stop at 38 degrees. The valves will regulate the temperature even if there is a drop in pressure within the system.
To further ease installation, the concealed valves offer adjustable wall mounts for different wall surfaces at different levels within the showering area. The slider rail kits are longer than the standard on the market, providing more flexibility to position the shower head at different heights – this enables an easy retro fit when replacing an old valve, ensuring no unsightly holes are left in the wall surface.
The Roman valves feature separate flow and temperature controls so they can be pre-set to a comfortable operating temperature and simply switched on and off for each use.
For those customers who are conscious of the environment the valves come complete with flow regulators so the flow can be restricted to a more economical rate. They regulate the water flow to around 8 litres per minute on the drench head versions and 6 litres per minute on the hand held showers.
Julian Pearson, Commercial Director at Roman, commented: “We are very pleased with our new collection of shower valves and have already received excellent feedback from those customers who have had a sneak preview. They are just the product to complete the contemporary and luxurious showering experience you would expect from Roman. With the variety of design options, there is something for every bathroom. They have been carefully designed to complement current bathroom trends, with a blend of curvaceous and square designs. With every valve purchase, you also have the peace of mind that they are back by a highly trained customer service team who can help at any stage throughout the purchase process, whether its advice before purchase, during the installation process or in an after sales capacity.”
Premier Inn has gone unconditional on deals for two new hotels at London’s leading airports, creating a total of 1,030 rooms.
Premier Inn will lease the hotels from companies owned by the Arora Family Trust, which has secured funding for both sites. The two will be built out as ‘developer turn-key’ deals. At Gatwick’s North Terminal, Prupim is funding a 630-bedroom Premier Inn which will be the largest in the Premier Inn portfolio. Work is yet to start on site and the hotel is expected to open in the next two years.

Surinder Arora of Arora Hotels, said: “I can confirm that the Arora Family Trust is delighted to have assisted in getting development funding to build these Premier Inns at such strategic locations. An architectural practice from Liverpool is increasing its profile in the Midlands after winning three major contracts that will help transform the face of Britain’s biggest provincial city. Two of the tasks involve facelifts for two vacant 1960s buildings that for some years have blighted the city centre. And the crowning glory is creating a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill on the 25th floor of the brand-new building, The Cube. The restaurant forms part of a £10m hotel and luxury health spa.
The biggest project of the three involves a £30m investment to transform Birmingham’s Cumberland House in city centre Broad Street into a 285-bed hotel.
Built as a speculative office tower in the 1960s it was for some time used as council offices before being vacated seven years ago.
The building is being given a new facia and a complete internal refit and will open in the summer of 2012 as a new Hampton by Hilton Hotel. The client is Birmingham-based developers, Office Villages Ltd, with contractors, Stockport-based Multibuild, already on site.
The development is taking advantage of a government scheme, known as BPRA, or Business Premises Renovation Allowance. It provides the incentive of tax breaks for the conversion of tired, vacant buildings. The incentive scheme makes the project viable, according to Adam Hall, Managing Director of Falconer Chester Hall(Architects).
BPRA is also being used in the planned conversion of another Birmingham city centre building, Snow Hill Plaza. Standing at the corner of Snow Hill and St Chads. The scheme will see the creation of a 224-bedroom Holiday Inn Express, with a new-build conference and banqueting suite added to the refurbished Snow Hill Plaza.
The practise is also creating a stunning Indigo Hotel on the top three floors of the iconic world-class Cube, a new building close to New Street Station and the Mailbox Building. This architectural practice is also working on a health spa in the basement of the The Cube, and the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill on the 25th floor.
The Snow Hill scheme is a development by Sanguine Hospitality and Bruntwood, whilst the hotel, restaurant and health spa at The Cube is a Sanguine Hospitality development. Sanguine will also be operating the Hampton by Hilton hotel at the Broad Street development.
Founded in 1533, Cartagena has emerged as world class tourism and resort destination, and an important convention city for the country. The hotel will be ideally located in the Bocagrande neighborhood of the city, overlooking the Caribbean Sea and approximately one and a half miles from the historic city center, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984.Marriott International, Inc. continues to grow its portfolio in Colombia with the announcement of its plans to open the 278-room Cartagena Marriott Hotel in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Currently scheduled to open in 2014, the project will be operated under a management agreement with Promotora El Faro S.A., controlled by Spazio Urbano. Marriott International is currently represented in Colombia by the JW Marriott Bogota Hotel and Bogota Marriott Hotel.
The 278-room Cartagena Marriott Hotel will be uniquely designed for the achiever who makes the most out of every opportunity – whether traveling for business or pleasure. The stylish hotel lobby will be the heart of the hotel, a versatile, multi-purpose space that becomes the social center for guests as well as local residents to meet friends and colleagues, grab a bite to eat, plug in their devices and work either in small groups or alone but still be close to the action – any time of the day or night. A selection of distinct amenities will include a fine dining restaurant, spa, fitness center and more 1,000 square meters of meeting space.

The oldest family owned manufacturer in the UK, Wandsworth Group has announced a distribution deal with one of the oldest German family owned manufacturers, electrical company Jung. The trade partnership extends the distribution network for Jung into the UK whilst Harald Jung, the grandson of the German company’s founder, expressed his delight in having the ability to distribute Wandsworths ‘retro’ fittings through their extensive distribution system. The disparity in size between the two companies is marked, with Jung’s turnover being 10 times that of the UK company. This can partly be explained by the difference in electrical specifications between the continental systems and the idiosyncratic system of the UK. Also Jung have developed the electronic control systems that are now de rigueur for electrical installations. The adoption of their products by Wandsworth opens the possibility of finally designers being able to suite all the switches within an hotel room.
As Gary Stevens, Sales & Marketing Director at Wandsworth explains “By joining forces with Jung, we instantly open up our existing range, at the same time, we’re also adding wiring accessories and door entry systems that match our existing range for quality but complement it in terms of design, enabling us to offer customers even greater choice.”
Comments Export Manager Wolfgang Becker of Jung: “We have never sold through distributors in the UK because our products are for the niche market where design and quality matter, not just the cheapest option. In Wandsworth we have found a partner that we can trust to deliver those values in the UK marketplace and a one that has the resources to drive understanding and uptake of our products in the UK. In the coming months we will also be introducing Wandsworth to the workings of the KNX building controls protocol. The protocol is now 20 years old and the UK remains around 12 years behind key economic competitors in Europe in terms of installations, which means that many commercial and public buildings are missing out on the wow factor and energy savings that KNX can offer.”
For hotel designers who have long recognised the quality of the slim plates and stylish finishes in the Wandsworth range the possibility that these will be extended to include a full range of electronic controls within a family of plates can only be a mouth-watering prospect

Work has started on the conversion of an existing building into a 100 bed hotel in Coventry for Premier Inn.The £6 million contract involves the conversion by the Leadbitter Group of part of the former Coventry Technical College complex, close to the city centre into a 100-bed Premier Inn at Earlsdon Park, Coventry, constructed on behalf of MCD Developments.
The project started on-site late last year, with the demolition of the redundant 1970 annexe at the rear. This leaves the original 1935 building intact, including an impressive stone façade and Doric portico. Part of the complex includes an art deco style theatre, which is very popular with the local community.
Extensive refurbishment inside the building will be undertaken, whilst retaining key art deco features in the entrance foyer and restoring an existing lightwell. An extra storey will be built at roof level, which will incorporate 42 of the 100 hotel rooms.
When complete, the building will include a restaurant and retail units on the ground floor, commercial offices on the first floor and two floors of hotel rooms. There are also plans to include a gym.
Following the new ownership of Petit St Vincent, a small private island located in the island nation of St. Vincent in the Grenadines, upgrade plans have now been finalised and will shortly be under way. Having spent time on PSV with their families over the past month, new owners Robin Paterson and Phil Stephenson have used their experience on the island and feedback from staff and customers to devise a customised renovation plan for the resort.
At the heart of the renovation is the promise to keep the ‘fundamental nature’ of PSV. It’s natural beauty, peace and quiet, privacy and discretion and friendly, non-intrusive service will not change and PSV will continue to be a privately owned hide away.
The Renovation Programme:
● PSV will not close between May to November 2011 as originally planned. Instead the resort will only close as usual in September and October.
● Renovations to the resort will include:
– A casual, a la carte restaurant on the beach to be open from 11-5pm daily serving light lunches, snacks and cocktails. – An air –conditioned fitness and yoga centre – An open air spa – An air conditioned library with TV, DVD and Internet for all guests to enjoy at leisure – A children’s treehouse; a special place, away from the adults, for the kids to have some fun programmes of their own – Landscaping that preserves the natural, wild beauty of the island whilst adding more colourful flowering plans and lights at night. – New activities desk where guests are given the opportunity to take part in various sports and programmes, from hiking, water sports and tennis to sailing, art classes and wine tasting.
Overall, it is Robin and Phil’s aim to ‘create and enduring place of beauty and harmony away from the crowds and noise of modern civilization, and built on the mutual respect already apparent between those who inhabit the island for whatever period of time they choose to visit’.

International tourism enters a new age China is on its way to becoming the travel industry’s dominant world power – ranging from groups to individual tours – big challenges lie ahead for job training in the tourism industry
Over the next two decades the makeup of tourism around the world will change significantly. Speaking at the 18th World Travel Monitor Forum in Pisa, Professor Haivan Song of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University said: “By 2030 China will be the world’s most popular tourism destination.” In addition, he added, during the next 20 years China would replace Germany as the world’s most travelled nation. Professor Haivan Song lectures at the world’s second largest university teaching travel and hospitality courses. “When visa regulations for citizens from the People’s Republic of China eventually change, tourists from China can be expected to vastly outnumber those from any other country.“ Launched by the consultancy IPK International and sponsored by ITB Berlin, every year at the World Travel Monitor Forum in Pisa 50 tourism experts and scientists from around the world present current statistics and the latest trends in international tourism.
According to Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s forecasts, in five years time arrivals in China will have already risen from 150 to 185 million. “At the current rate, China will be an economic power equal to Europe and the US combined. China’s role in international tourism will be similar“, said Haivan Song. Relaxing visa regulations will also significantly affect the makeup of tourism out of China. “When these barriers fall Chinese citizens will also undertake tours on their own“, he added. According to the German National Tourism Board, from January to August 2010 the number of overnights by Chinese citizens in Germany alone rose to 652,459, a year-on-year increase of 28 per cent.
According to Professor Haivan Song, the travel boom forecast for China over the next two decades means the country faces huge challenges. “A massive effort will be needed in China to train people for jobs in the travel and hotel industry“, he said.
“The forecasts for the future of tourism from Asia and in particular from China are very good news for Germany as a tourism destination“, said Dr. Martin Buck, Director, CompetenceCenter Travel and Logistics, Messe Berlin. “By launching ITB Asia, an annual event, in Singapore we have prepared the ground in order to meet the needs of the growing Asian market.“

My first visit to a truly African hotel was , I suppose to Bushmans Kloof in 2008. Truly African in that it was not urban and was focussed on generating a wildlife experience for the guest. The owners, the Tollman family invest money from their European Red Carnation Group in various wildlife trusts and it was from them I found out about Wilderness. There are plenty of urban hotels in Africa that are setting standards and providing a level of service and environment that is competitive with the best of Europe or the Americas. When I talk about African hotels though, in this context I mean those operators who mix hotel operation with a true engagement with Africa’s landscape and wildlife.
That this impacts design is undoubted and I have tried to show this through my reviews of Little Kulala, Damaraland and Ongava. The trends shown in these hotels run through their 65 lodge operations, the latest two of which are totally solar powered, probably a first for any hotel operator.
Now Wilderness, who fund charities and development programmes for small communities (see Wilderness Trust) have arrived at a more coherent branding for the various activities they undertake.
The first step in this in-depth process was the rebranding of Safari Adventure Company as Wilderness Adventures late last year. Wilderness Adventures now joins Wilderness Safaris as the two camp-operating brands in the group, with clear market differentiation.
Clarifying market niches even further has resulted in the independence of the mobile safari operating brand, Wilderness Explorations. The new separate identity of this brand that represents the original roots of the group is expected to allow it to reach its full potential.
The logical next step, based on the ‘family’ concept, has been to rebrand Sefofane Air Charters to become Wilderness Air.
Wilderness Adventures and Wilderness Safaris are already branded and reorganised with releases to the market complete. Wilderness Air and Wilderness Explorations have now begun the process of replacing livery on aircraft and vehicles, changing uniforms and other collateral. As they work through this phase guests and travel partners will start to see an increasing use of the new branding and logos.
Wilderness CEO Andy Payne described the process as, “essentially moving from what we called ‘a house of brands’ to a ‘branded house’; in other words, a way of showing the inherent connections between all members of the Wilderness family while celebrating their differences.”

The hotel will be located a mere 200 metres west of the main entrance, and, soaring 20 storeys above the skyline, will soon emerge as a local landmark. Facilities will include 223 rooms (the majority offering uninterrupted views of the River Thames), a restaurant and bar, and a fitness room.
The Park Inn ExCeL will have four meeting rooms, with a total conference space of 450 square meters.
Besides ExCeL, the hotel is also strategically located in proximity to London City Airport (which has over 200 daily flights), the commercial centre of Canary Wharf, and the state-of-the-art O2 concert arena. • Over 8,500 rooms opened during the quarter, including over 1,800 rooms converted from competitor brands and 2,100 rooms in international markets.
BETHESDA, MD – February 14, 2011 – Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR), in addition to reporting its fourth quarter and full year 2010 results today, announced a plan to split the company’s businesses into two separate, publicly traded companies. Marriott International expects to spin off its timeshare operations and development business as a new independent company through a special tax-free dividend to Marriott International shareholders in late 2011.
DETAILS OF THE TRANSACTION Under the plan, the new company will focus on the timeshare business as the exclusive developer and operator of timeshare, fractional and related products under the Marriott brand and the exclusive developer of fractional and related products under the Ritz-Carlton brand. After the split, Marriott International will concentrate on the lodging management and franchise business. Marriott will also receive franchise fees from the timeshare company’s use of the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton brands.
Marriott International chairman and chief executive officer, J.W. Marriott, Jr., said, “Marriott took a bold step when we introduced our Marriott brand to the timeshare industry in 1984. In this transaction, we take another innovative step forward as we combine the power of the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton brands with the flexibility and focus of a new independent timeshare company.
“The transaction will permit both companies to tailor their business strategies to best address market opportunities in their respective industries. The new timeshare company will be positioned to expand faster over time while Marriott International will further advance its longstanding strategy of separating real estate from management and franchise operations. With two public companies, shareholders will be able to pursue investment goals in either or both companies rather than one combined organization.
“Marriott Vacation Club owners and guests and The Ritz-Carlton Destination Club members should see no change in the branding or quality of their properties, services, usage options, use of Marriott Rewards points, or access to Marriott International’s hotels. The companies will continue to work together to provide outstanding vacation experiences, similar to the relationship between Marriott International and the franchisees of its hotel properties. After the split, both companies will remain dedicated to the highest standards of quality and value and the brand promise for which Marriott and Ritz-Carlton are well known and widely respected.
“Day-to-day operations at both companies should not be affected by this transaction. During the past few years, our company has brought staffing levels and expenses in line with operating conditions across our businesses. While we will continue to improve efficiency where possible, we do not expect this transaction to result in work force reductions. Associates should continue to have attractive career opportunities due to the growth prospects of both companies,” added Mr. Marriott.
As two separate public companies, both Marriott International and the new company will have separate boards of directors. J.W. Marriott, Jr. will remain chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Marriott International. Stephen P. Weisz, president of Marriott’s timeshare business since 1997 and a 39-year Marriott veteran, will become chief executive officer of the new company. William J. Shaw, who recently announced his retirement as vice chairman of the company at Marriott International and also resigned from its board, will become chairman of the board of the new timeshare company and Deborah Marriott Harrison, senior vice president of government affairs for Marriott International, will serve as a board member.
Mr. Weisz said, “Our new company will be independent and the largest pure-play timeshare firm in the world. We will be publicly-held and financially sound with significant growth opportunities including meaningful upside as the economic recovery proceeds. We believe our outstanding brands, unparalleled operating skill, prime resort locations and world-class sales expertise will continue to provide us with a significant competitive advantage.
“With the launch of the Marriott Vacation Club Destinations timeshare program, our points-based product, in 2010, we are confident in our ability to fulfill the dreams and meet the growing expectations of our customers. We expect to continue to create value for shareholders through a diverse stream of income, including development, management and financing. We dramatically improved our cost structure and efficiency in the last two years and are well-positioned for the upturn. And with over $1.5 billion in timeshare segment inventory at year-end 2010, our near term investment needs are modest. All in all, we expect to generate meaningful cash from operations in the next few years. I am enormously excited by this new opportunity for our business and our associates.”
In 2010, Marriott International’s timeshare segment reported revenue of approximately $1.5 billion (unadjusted for specific terms of the transaction). At year-end 2010, Marriott International’s timeshare segment operated 71 timeshare and fractional resorts with more than 400,000 owners and approximately 10,000 employees.
After the special dividend, the Marriott family is expected to hold approximately 21 percent of the outstanding common stock of each company.
Marriott International will continue to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange and expects that the new timeshare company will also be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The new timeshare company does not expect to pay a quarterly cash dividend or be investment grade in the near term. Marriott International does not expect to change its quarterly cash dividend as a result of this transaction.
Marriott will disclose more details about the respective pro forma balance sheets and pro forma income statements of the two companies when the new timeshare company files a Form 10 registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which it expects to occur sometime in the second quarter of 2011. The transaction is subject to the receipt of normal and customary regulatory approvals, the execution of inter-company agreements, receipt of a favorable ruling from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), arrangement of adequate financing facilities, final approval by Marriott International’s board of directors, and other related matters. The transaction will not require shareholder approval and will have no impact on Marriott’s contractual obligations to the existing securitizations. Subject to the completion of this ongoing work and the receipt of regulatory approvals, the spin-off should be completed before year-end 2011.

The Mayflower Renaissance Hotel begins 2011 with the announcement of a substantial redesign project, including a multi-million dollar refurbishment of the historic hotel. Beginning this month, the ‘Grand Dame’ of the nation’s capital will undergo physical upgrades to the lobby, restaurant, bar and retail spaces. The renovation, designed by acclaimed firm Wilson Associates, will begin later this month and is expected to conclude mid-summer 2011.The current Town & Country Lounge will become the new home of Thomas Pink — a layout that recalls an earlier configuration of the hotel in which the retail space faces DeSales Street. The new Thomas Pink store will resurface with a fresh look similar to its prototype in London.
The area presently occupied by Thomas Pink will offer a new dining option with a restaurant and bar for patrons to enjoy food and drink. In the past, the space near Connecticut Avenue was home to a coffee shop and several eateries frequented by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and President Harry Truman, who bestowed upon the hotel its nickname, “Washington’s Second Best Address.”
The Mayflower’s Café Promenade will reopen as a new 3,000 square foot gala event space. The historic ballroom’s breathtaking skylight, chandeliers and murals will remain intact for guests to admire.
Turkey needs quality, branded mid-market and economy hotels in secondary cities delegates were told at CATHIC (Central Asia & Turkey Hotel Investment Conference) which concluded in Istanbul (on Wednesday February 9 2011).“Turkey is crying out for branded, consistent, quality mid-market hospitality products,” said Michael Collini of Hilton Worldwide. Poğda Demircan, Hilton’s Development Manager for Turkey agreed. He also pointed out that the room rate gap between upscale and mid-market hotels could be quite small in regional cities.
“At the end of the day, there is a maximum price customers will pay for a room in provincial city locations. This means that the greater operating profit will be for the mid-market operator who has lower development and operational costs, and not for the five-star properties.”
Potential investors and developers also heard the case for and against opting for Turkish and international brands.
The general consensus was that home-grown brands, such as the event’s supporters – Rixos, Dedemann and Marmara have excellent local knowledge and know what suits the market. On the flip side, the international brands have high global visibility and well-tuned operations.
“The conclusion is to avoid making choices based on ‘ego’ and choose the brand that will deliver the best return on investment for each project,” said conference delegate, Turkey-based Banu Ogawal.
Elif Egeli Nişanci of Jones Lang LeSalle Hotels summed up the issue by advising that development should not be for the sake of development: “Make sure that the supply matches the demands of market to ensure the project will maintain good rates.”
Delegates taste Turkey An evening at the stunning Marmara Esma Sultan provided an opportunity to digest the day’s events. This is a memorable venue, with views of the Bosphorous Bridge and Ortaköy Mosque, innovative design with a steel and glass structure within the walls of the historic palace, and delightful staff and service. All who attended agreed that this venue certainly has the ‘wow’ factor.
Spotlight on region-based award winners The CATHIC Hotel Investment Awards were presented to: • Best new hotel in Turkey: Pera Palace Hotel Istanbul • Best new hotel in Central Asia: Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel, Tbilisi • Outstanding achievement award: Haluk Kaya, Chairman of Bekay Property Partners.

Snotels will innovate the lodging market by launching a niche hotel brand, network and experience, for existing hotel owners and developers, solely in ski resorts and alpine towns, across the world. Snotels is a mid-range hotel brand focused on creating experiences, freedom and altitude for hotel owners and alpine enthusiasts. Negotiations with hotel owners are underway. Independently run and resort owned hotels typically struggle with brand awareness, hotel technology, marketing and service innovation. The venture founder, Michael Metcalfe says: “Snotels will increase occupancy, guest satisfaction and revenue for Snoteliers with united brand power, reservations and systems, marketing, international reach and support services”. The team includes Paul Clark, former CEO of Virgin Hotels and Mike Jones, former VP with Hilton International, plus a strong network of advisers.
Michael Metcalfe, a former snowboard instructor and resort executive, created Snotels after experiencing great difficulty in finding quality mid-range hotels when travelling in winter and summer to mountain areas across Europe, North America and Australasia. He says: “Snotels is thrilled to bring crucial benefits to Snoteliers and mountain tourists by pioneering the launch of the world’s first alpine hotel brand”.
With simple and affordable conversions, hotels can implement core brand standards and flexible options, and then relaunch using the Snotels experience. Paul Clark explains: “Snotels is offering major incentives for launch sites which allow for cost-effective rebranding. This will positively impact their operation and financial future”. Mike Jones says: “Our reservation, hotel management and technology systems will maximise hotel revenues and give hotel owners major advantages over regional competition”.
The experience, service touches and marketing will target ‘alpine enthusiasts’ – cash sound, time poor, quality and value focused international and backyard explorers that want brand certainty, empowerment and simplicity. Snotels is introducing a high-tech high-touch guest journey, from booking to check-out and beyond. Guests control their booking experience and unique services, extras and notifications deliver major satisfaction, branding and sales power, that independent hotels cannot feasibly afford or maintain.
A network expansion of 50 hotels by 2016 will be aggressively pursued. Depending on location, sites will have 20 to 150 rooms. Guest rooms will feature hotel basics plus a flat screen television, quality bedding, complimentary wireless internet and many untold secrets to enhance the experience, whether winter or summer. Public areas will include engaging zones, hot tubs, services for skiers, hikers and bikers, with options for restaurant, bar, rental, retail and other spaces.

The ability of Wilton Carpets Commercial to marry design, flexibility and speed through its Ready to Go carpet concept has proved the winning formula for the Bury store of Peter Jackson The Jewellers.Specified by jewellery retail specialist, Hallmark Design & Shopfitting to add to the luxury feel of the interior, the carpet was selected in the striking floral of Fantasia from the Symphony collection and proved perfect in a standard colourway.
As part of the Ready to Go concept, Fantasia can be selected in any of 10 colourways designed to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of hospitality and retail environments. Manufactured in a high performance 80% wool 20% nylon blend for durability, ease of maintenance and appearance retention, the 3.66m wide woven Axminster carpet so impressed that it provided the base for the interior palette of Peter Jackson The Jewellers:
“The Symphony carpet was perfect for this project as it presented a delicate pattern with enough variety of colour to allow the rest of the interior’s colour palette to be drawn from it, hence the pinks and lime greens used on walls and furnishings,” comments Joanne Coleman of Hallmark Design and Shopfitting. “We recommend carpets on a regular basis as they really add a sense of luxury to the environment and this example is no exception. There is no doubt that working alongside a specialist such as Wilton Carpets Commercial will deliver the end result we are after and never fail to impress our client at handover.”

The historic Barceló Buxton Palace Hotel which dates back to 1868, is a landmark building situated on the edge of the Peak District. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, and Bakewell (famous for its Bakewell Tart) are all nearby, making it a fantastic tourist destination.
Right beside the Tower Tube station is a growing little hotel quarter, already home to five hotels with more planned. Mint Hotel is the latest in Pepys Street, on the site of Samuel Pepys house, and I was fortunate to attend the opening party on the 2nd February, although the hotel had a soft opening the 10th January, a few weeks earlier.Opened by Alex Salmond, First Minister of our northern neighbours, this is the latest addition to the Mint Hotel group. You may wrinkle your brow in puzzlement at the name, but this is the new branding being implemented by the previously know City Inns (see our Miniview of City Inn Westminster).
With 583 rooms this large hotel is, as with all the other Mint Hotels, owned as well as operated by the group. Partner David Orr explained that this was because they like to be totally in control of the way their brand operates, a philosophy shared with the UK’s largest domestic hotel operator, Whitbread.
The move from owning to management only has always seemed to me to be a curious way forward for hotels, given the inextricable intertwining of the build, size of rooms, energy conservation and operational philosphy. With teh opening of this hotel and the imminent completion of the property in Amsterdam which will be that cirties largest hotel , Mint now has over 2,400 employees in its 8 properties and continues its growth path.
Falmouth has its place in history, its place as a centre of the web. Not the internet but a network of Royal Mail packet boats – the ‘snail-mail’ of the 17th and 18th Century. From here packet boats took mail, supplies and wages to British armies abroad through a web of sea routes at a speed slightly slower than 6 megabits a second.
Falmouth was also a centre for orders for ships arriving in northern Europe, far enough down the channel to be safe from the marauding French. Here ships would arrive in the world’s third largest natural harbour, the sensible place for ship masters to stop to repair and revictual their ships coming across the Atlantic or up from southern seas. Here they collected orders from ship owners as to where their cargoes could go onward for maximum profit.
So the town was important, boasting two castles and fortifications enough to satisfy any history buff, whilst the grandeur of a town that was second only to London in the number of Embassies (representing those foreign sails making landfall here), still haunts the narrow streets.
Above all this is a maritime town, a jewel of the famed ‘Cornish Riviera’ and the refurbished St. Michael’s Hotel is a gem of Falmouth now. This is a 1920’s building that oddly became an hotel in 1940. I suppose once the conversion to an hotel was underway a little local disagreement with Continental neighbours (perhaps) was no reason to stop, but it was a curious time to launch a new hotel even so.
Like many English seaside hotels the hotel gradually slid into decay and presented an opportunity for new owners to transform into a stylish resort hotel, shaking off the tired tradition of the English seaside in favour of creating an exercise in theatrical charm. For theatrical in many ways this hotel is, in a slightly restrained English manner, mixing concepts and colour in an eclectic mélange that works delightfully.
Theatre starts outside with graphics creating a branding through the use of sails and sailcloth, echoing modern Falmouth’s role as a major builder of luxury yachts and a home to one of the UK’s finest marinas. The external sail motif and the large mural image in reception is enhanced by the addition of real sails and rope echoing Falmouth’s past and present significance with the sea.
Falmouth is also second home to the National Maritime Museum of what was once one of the world’s leading maritime nations. Being in Cornwall, the Museum and hotel alike only acknowledge in passing that they are in England preferring, like the Bretons in France, to pretend they are a separate people: the Cornish, and one of the six Celtic nations.
With family from just across the border in Devon I can, of course, only laugh at their presumptions.
The Reception desk is a lifeboat behind which curved ship-type sliding doors conceal offices. The entrance is marked by two sails and the ‘boardwalk feel’ of the lobby is enhanced by a large image of sailing vessels, the sail of one of which is a real canvas and rope artefact.
From the Reception desk with its faux boat, mast, creels and sails, it is possible to see through into the bar and restaurant. The short passageway, off which goes the staircase to many of the bedrooms, leads not to more slightly Disneyesque theatricals but to sophisticated interiors, linked to reception by colour and in which the nautical theme is played down to subtle hints – portholes in doors, pebbles and fish tanks.
The portholes look into a walk-in wine cellar and award winning Cornish Camel Valley wines feature strongly on the wine list. Walls have been removed to create a large space flooded with light with views across the gardens into the bay beyond. The bar here is the focus and is a delight – a confection of coloured light and tiles, mixing up and down lights with under lighting of the bar top. The wall behind the lounge seating is rippled with subtle echoes of the sinuous ridges waves make in sand and concealed lighting gently changes colour, washing the wall with pale calming colours. There is a small lounge area and a focal point in front of a fire place in which flames flicker warmly.
Through a doorway is a lounge configured like a luxury yacht, masculine in feel, with a floor like a yacht’s decking with leather seating. Already this area is becoming popular for informal business meetings and the large TV is permanently tuned to Bloomberg emphasising this.
Beyond the bar is a lounge area where windows along one side present spectacular views across the bay, overlooking the waves which creates some of the best surfing in Europe. Cornwall is renowned for its surfing industry and is a major element of the tourist business in the county. Another lounge flows down to large picture windows and is separated from the restaurant area by fish tanks and a mirror. This and the restaurant are built out above the swimming pool area. The new owner extended and opened this part of the hotel to maximise the views of the bay and Pendennis Castle, which built in the 16th Century when Falmouth began to attain its vital role in the maritime life of the nation.
This area is quite separate from the bar and the club lounge and offers a pre-dinner drinks space or a place for coffee and brandy afterwards. By day of course it is great for teas or sandwiches. The restaurant varies its layout using different table shapes, etched glass screens and strips of coloured LED lighting to create private areas, breaking the big space up into smaller and more intimate seating arrangements. Colour plays an important role in unifying these disparate elements, with etched glass used throughout the hotel to pull things together.
There are two small conference rooms as well as a larger function room with its own bar, and the hotel, whilst offering free WiFi throughout, also offers internet stations for guests. The division between resort and business is well balanced with the club lounge just keeping enough of the hotel clearly oriented around the needs of business – it could almost be declared a child-free zone as I imagine that in school holidays this will be a very popular destination hotel for families.
The simple finishes are carried through into the bedrooms and the spa area, but here and there are touches that remind one of the location. Ground floor public toilets for example are presented as a pair of beach hut changing rooms and timber cladding is frequently used to evoke that ‘seaside’ feeling.
In the bedrooms timber cladding is used again and the colour is carried through, along with ‘seaside’ art images, which helps keep the coherence of the design. As usual in an old hotel there is a great variety of room types. There are suites, and larger rooms have terraces. All have good work desks and plenty of drawer space for those wanting a longer stay than a couple of nights. The bedrooms have a sophisticated simplicity, their varying sizes giving them an individuality that comes by default with older buildings. The choice of natural finish to the timber furniture harmonises with the driftwood used elsewhere. The use of timber, from flooring to furniture and skylight soffits, is enhanced by the use of driftwood in feature pieces and lamps made of rocks. The colour palette varies in tone but not in hue.
Whilst avoiding becoming kitsch the seaside theme is taken neatly through the bedrooms with striped fabrics echoing deck chairs and simple white and eau-de-nil colour palette making everything look fresh and clean. Most rooms have sea views and the sound of gulls. In the Spa area, rope holds up driftwood display shelves and the timber treatment room panelling echoes the beach huts imagery deliberately invoked with the decor for the public toilet area.
The Spa is very busy and has a very healthy local membership for its gym and four treatment rooms. The pool has been enlarged and opens onto a wide terrace in the summer months on the edge of notable gardens. Gardens are exotic in English terms as the area is warmed by the gulf stream and has a warmer climate than much of England, allowing more delicate and exotic species to flourish.
This is a classic English seaside hotel, which with a sensitive but ambitious makeover transcends the run of the mill to become comparable with hotel such as the Marine (of a similar age) or the 12 Apostles (and the spa is better).
Although not on the beach it is certainly of the beach. Its gardens are separated from the shoreline by the sea road, its elevated position giving it views the redesign has capitalised on.
The refurbishment is already bringing the enhanced occupancy levels it deserves. As petrol prices rise and foreign travel becomes once again the preserve of the rich, English seaside hotels need to emulate the standards set here.

Travelodge has recently celebrated the opening of its first hotel in Horsham – the poetry capital of the South. Located on Worthing Road, the 67-room hotel represents an investment of £2.5 million and will offer rooms from just £19 per night. The new hotel has created 20 jobs in Horsham and is the budget hotel chain’s 460th opening to date.
Prior to the hotel opening Travelodge joined forces with the West Sussex County Times to go in search of a local modern ‘Shelly’ to pen poetry (themed around sleep or the beauty of Horsham) to adorn the walls of its new hotel.
The poetry competition – which went live in December 2010 – was extremely popular and proves that Horsham is full of budding poets of all ages.
The Editor in Chief of West Sussex County Times, Gary Shipton, chose the top three winning entries which were written by local Horshamites Gordon Judge, Maurice Packham and 12 year old Georgina Easterbrook.
All three winners were invited to a winner’s presentation and poetry recital at the official opening of Horsham Central Travelodge. The event – which took place on the 26th January ‘11 – was attended by the finalists, senior Travelodge management and the hotel team.
The overall winning poem was selected by Mr Shipton and Travelodge’s Hotel Manager, Aleksandra Rendjuk. The winner, 12 year old, Georgina Easterbrook, who is now titled – Horsham’s Sleeping Poet – won the competition and a three-stop literary tour where she and her family will visit the birth place of the UK’s most famous poets and writers plus receive £100 travel/spending money. The runners up won a book titled The Nation’s Favourite Poem’s which includes works from Horsham’s very own PB Shelley. All three winning poems are now displayed in the hotel’s reception area for customers to read.
As a result of the new hotel opening, Horsham is now set to benefit from an estimated £1million boost to its local economy as research suggests that Travelodge’s customers spend, on average, £36 a day in local restaurants, pubs and shops.
It is anticipated that Horsham Central Travelodge will benefit from both business and leisure travellers. Horsham is centrally located between the beautiful Sussex Downland (now a National Park) and delightful Weald landscape of the South East. It is just one hour by train from London, 30 minutes to Gatwick Airport and 40 minutes by car to Brighton and the coast.

Roman, one of the UK’s leading shower designers and manufacturers, is set to exhibit at ISH Frankfurt 2011, for the first time. The show, which runs from the 15th to the 19th March, will mark the launch of their distinctively unique Desire range of enclosures. With their dedicated Export Team, whose languages include Spanish, French, German and Italian, on hand throughout the exhibition, Roman will be well placed to show visitors from right across Europe around the stand.
Alongside Roman’s new Desire range, the exhibition will also mark the launch of Roman’s stunning new range of valves, together with new products being added to their popular Embrace Range. Roman will also showcase key existing products at the exhibition to the European market.
Desire Sliding Door
The Desire range is a collection of revolutionary shower enclosures which transform the traditional concept that the sliding mechanism on an enclosure with a sliding door, must be at the top of the enclosure. The range has turned showering on its head by incorporating the sliding mechanism into the base of the enclosure, for the ultimate in minimalist styling. This unique concept is an internationally patented design. The range includes the Desire Sliding Door and the Desire Quadrants, available in three different styling options.
Desire Three Quadrant
New to the Embrace range is the Folding Bath Screen, a carefully styled screen which is approved for use with power showers and neatly folds away when not in use; and also the Embrace Three Panel Sliding Door Enclosure. This enclosure offers an extravagant door opening due to its cleverly designed three panel sequential sliding system, which incorporates an ‘active’ middle door to ensure a smooth gliding opening.
Folding Bath Screen
Roman’s new collection of luxury shower valves will also be showcased for the first time, with several key designs from the range on show. This exquisite range encompasses a choice of exposed and concealed models available in a variety of configurations. There are a series of drench heads in opulent shapes from square, rectangular and circular headed designs to a curvaceous oval option. A number of models are available with a second multi-function hand shower.
Sculptures Range
Together with these new products, Roman will also showcase existing products from their luxury Sculptures collection. The lavish Sculptures range is styled for the top end of the market, incorporating stunning 10mm thick toughened glass and standing at an impressive height of 1950mm. Roman will also launch their new invisible fix system, available in this range, to highlight their Bespoke capabilities – in this case with the Sculptures Etched Glass Wetroom Panels. This made to measure Bespoke Service can design a solution to fit in accordance with an individual’s specific requirements – creating tailor-made, truly unique showering solutions.
Roman’s Managing Director, David Osborne commented: “We are very much looking forward to being involved in this year’s ISH exhibition. The show is the leading name in our industry and a natural progression for our Export team who already work with customers from right across Europe, the Middle East, the USA, Canada and Asia. Roman’s product range is perfectly placed for the European market, with something for all, from bathroom retailers, to interior designers, architects and hotel specifiers. We offer a solution for all pricing points, from market entry products through to our exclusive designer range of enclosures.”
