Red Dot Award for Duravit’s C.1 tap series and Luv bathroom range

Duravit’s C.1 tap fitting series and Luv bathroom range have received the 2018 “Red Dot” Award for outstanding design.

The company says the C.1 design range by Kurt Merki Jr. perfectly reflects its design language, featuring an ergonomic handle with a recess underneath that is comfortable to hold and permits precise operation.

Meanwhile, the unusual design of Luv by Danish designer Cecilie Manz combines Nordic purism and what Duravit calls ‘timeless, emotional elegance’, with gentle forms following a stringent geometry.

The Red Dot award for “Product Design”, which can trace its origins back to 1955, seeks out each year’s best products.

In 2018 designers and manufacturers from 59 nations entered more than 6,300 objects in the competition.

A40 strong jury evaluated the products individually as originals, while the same expert committee only awards the internationally renowned quality seal to products with an impressively high design quality and that satisfy stringent evaluation criteria.

Wilton Carpets weave a new look for Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa

Wilton Carpets has revealed details of its latest project, which required bringing a sense of occasion to the new Orangery of Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa, a 16th Century country house in Northamptonshire.

The Grand Hall in the main house already featured a woven axminster bespoke design by Wilton, returning to warmth and grandeur after the hotel found the bare wood floors caused echoes.

As such, when it came to a floor for the Orangery, the general manager at Rushton Hall, Valerie Hazelton, had a clear idea of what was required:

“We wanted carpet in the Orangery to help with noise levels, as well as add a warmth and cosiness to the multi-purpose space, which we knew needed a neutral colour palette so that functions could bring their own theme and colours. The walls, curtains and chairs are plain, so it was important to offset this with a patterned carpet, but one that was still subtle enough to work with any event colour scheme chosen.”

Bordered Geometric Design

With previous experience of Wilton Carpets, Rushton Hall once again called upon the expertise of the Wiltshire-based manufacturer. Presenting a bordered geometric design with larger classical motifs inset, the pattern is contemporary while referencing the historic setting of the hotel’s architecture.

Wilton worked closely with Hazelton to ensure that the final creation met the needs of the building: “Making a decision on such a big area is not an easy task and Wilton worked with me to develop the final grey and gold colour palette for the design, producing samples in various combinations until I was sure we had made the right choice. It’s a fresh design but goes really well with the traditional style of the building. The carpet is liked by all our guests, but brides and grooms in particular seem to love the mixture of gold and grey tones.”

The carpet was woven in a premium 10-row quality in a rich British wool blend, ensuring it can withstand regular intense use and be easily cleaned between functions taking place in the Orangery for many years to come.

In adjacent corridors, Wilton created another bespoke repeating geometric design, this time in a wool-rich tufted quality. In a green and dark gold colourway, the carpet’s pattern works to accommodate the walls of the 16th Century building, which are far from being straight and true. The carpets were made in Wiltshire, giving Hazelton the confidence to choose Wilton once again.

“With Wilton weaving continuing to produce its carpets in Britain, it could offer me bespoke qualities within a quick timescale and I had the confidence that the carpet would be delivered on time with no delays or surprises along the way. We are absolutely delighted with our choice,” concludes Hazelton.

Rushton Hall’s history dates back to 1438, when construction of the original building begun under Sir William Tresham. Now a Grade I Listed building set in 25-acres of immaculate grounds, Rushton Hall is one of the finest hotels in the Midlands, awarded four red stars and three rosettes. Offering guests luxury accommodation, the hotel is known throughout Northamptonshire as a setting for glamorous weddings and events.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE SPOTLIGHT: The Bolero range from Nisbets

Roca takes inspiration from its past for new Carmen collection

The collection includes a close coupled WC, basin and pedestal, with a complementary furniture range and mirror.

Roca says its new Carmen range is based on its collection from the 1940s, having been launched to celebrate the company’s centenary.

However, it still features the latest in technology and material innovations. For example, the WC is rimless for greater hygiene and easier cleaning, as well as being fitted with a water distributor that Roca says provides an improved flushing performance.

The seat cover has been manufactured with SUPRALIT, a new exclusive resin registered by Roca, which it says is more durable (offering greater resistance to chemical agents and to discolouration), more hygienic (four times less porous material) and easier to clean (surface with soft and rounded angles).

The collection includes a close coupled WC, basin and pedestal, with a complementary furniture range and mirror also available.

Roca has also developed a range of Carmen brassware to complete the product family. It has an authentic period design with  the latest generation of flow limiters that its says guarantee a 5l/m flow, regardless of the system pressure.

As well as its ceramic disc operation, the Carmen taps has the Roca Evershine electroplating process applied for anticorrosion, lifetime brightness and anti-scratching.

“Over the last few years, the trend for vintage and classical design has continued to grow,” said Alan Dodds, Managing Director of Roca UK. “From the research we have conducted, vintage means more than just antiques, it is about classic and timeless design that is still relevant today. That is why we have introduced Carmen, it is a collection that is routed in the past but has all the attributes to complement a modern bathroom.”

Chelsom collaborates with Joyce Wang Studio and Benjamin West on Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park lighting

Chelsom worked closely with Joyce Wang Studio and procurement specialist Benjamin West to create a custom designed lighting scheme for the refurbishment of guestrooms, corridors and public areas in the 5-star Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London.

The interior scheme was completely original, with Joyce Wang designing the lighting pieces, taking inspiration from the textures, forms and colours found in London’s iconic Hyde Park. The design team created an eclectic range of fittings in a variety of different materials, all of which required a range of manufacturing techniques.

The combination of differing rich brass metalwork alongside textured glasses and organic materials was deliberate to create a striking visual impact.

Statement chandeliers are prominent in the suites and guestrooms, each featuring individual lighting designs. Chandeliers in the suites take on organic forms with branch like brass arms sprawling across the ceiling finished with cracked glass acorns.

Other stand out chandeliers feature a trio of asymmetrically positioned ultra-shallow light units housing integral LED light sources. Each light unit features faux alabaster bottom diffusers and solid clear glass rods positioned around the perimeter creating a sparkle of twinkling light. Unique bedside wall sconces have dark metal frames which house jewel-like glass diffusers refracting beautiful light effects across the walls.

In keeping with the nearby Royal Horseguards Parade, corridor and bathroom light fittings were manufactured using synthetic horse hair. Bathroom wall sconces show the hair wrapped tightly around metal backplates to act as reflectors to the backlit light sources while magnanimous square pendants adorned with ribbed glass rods and ponytails of hair line the corridors.

In the public areas, Chelsom says it has been sensitive to the period architecture of the interior. In the main entrance lobby the company supplied modernised balustrade mounted light fixtures, which continue the overarching theme of crackled glass tones with rich brass metalwork.

As part of the refurbishment the team also restored existing chandeliers in the Rosebury Lounge, upgrading the technology and restoring the metalwork.

SPA SPOTLIGHT: How Kaldewei helped Hotel am Meer to create a unique experience

Located on the Baltic island of Rügen, Hotel am Meer has undergone extensive upgrading within the last 12 months, with innovative technology and modern design blending together to create a 21st Century spa experience like no other.

‘Meerspa’ offers three unique wellbeing experiences – the Sound Wave bathtub audio system, the Skin Touch cosmetic treatment and Vivo Turbo Plus whirl system, all by premier German bathroom solutions manufacturer Kaldewei.

Working with Kaldewei, the 4-star hotel can now offer all of its guests a cosmetic bath with a rejuvenating effect while they immerse themselves in their favourite music, or enjoy the benefits of a massage in the whirl bath.

Speaking the same language

Owner Wolfgang Schewe made the decision to invest in the innovative technology for the spa treatments after listening to the wishes of his guests and talking to staff. Schewe realised there was less demand for ‘classic’ bath treatments, and more of a requirement for a boutique approach, offering a modern experience and utilising the range of individual pampering treatments now available.

The ‘Meerspa’ has proved to be an instant success with new and existing customers using the services, according to the hotel, particularly the use of the Kaldewei Skin Touch treatment in a hotel, which is a world-first. During a Skin Touch treatment, the bathwater is enriched with millions of microbubbles of air.

“Our spa guests particularly like the new Kaldewei Skin Touch system: the microbubbles of air enrich the skin with oxygen, leaving it smooth and supple,” explained Schewe. “Guests really enjoy using this new kind of beauty treatment and appreciate the long-lasting effect of Kaldewei Skin Touch.

“Our guests are very happy to use this new kind of beauty treatment and particularly appreciate the benefits of Kaldewei Skin Touch,” commented Schewe. “For us too, this investment makes sense because we can offer our guests completely new and attractive treatments, thus recouping a part of our additional costs.”

Duravit present the ultimate toilet experience

Duravit introduces new range of tap fittings

Following the success of C.1, Duravit introduces two further universal tap fitting ranges – B.1 and B.2. The ranges are positioned in the entry and mid-level price segment.

For Duravit, these tap fittings represent an extension of the fundamental concept of designing the bathroom in a streamlined and consistent “language,” and allow for a complete Duravit bathroom. The tap fitting ranges, B.1 and B.2, are competitively priced offering added value, particularly for architects and developers. B.1 features soft, round contours, while B.2 boasts a straight-lined, striking design. Two different spout heights (S and M) cater to personal requirements for the washbasin.

Polished chrome surfaces ensure a pleasant feel on all models. The water jet can be optimally adapted to the user’s needs thanks to an individually adjustable aerator. B.1 and B.2 also offer an ideal tap fitting solution for any installation scenario in all other areas of the bathroom, such as the bidet, shower and bathtub.

For the shower, there is a choice between single-lever shower mixers and a thermostatic shower mixer for exposed or concealed installation. These can be combined with any square or round showerheads for wall or ceiling installation, and shower rails and hand showers in various versions. Ready-made, pre-fitted shower systems with showerheads and hand showers are available as a full practical solution – and can also be fitted retrospectively. Duravit wins the iF GOLD AWARD 2018

Duravit C.1 tap fittings win the iF GOLD AWARD 2018 – Luv, Vero Air c-bonded and the BioTracer honoured with the iF DESIGN AWARD March 2018 – making it the 41st iF DESIGN AWARD for the company.

The iF GOLD AWARD acknowledges the design excellence, execution, consideration of environmental standards, functionality and innovations of the new C.1 tap fittings range. This award again confirms Duravit’s high level of design expertise. In addition, Luv, Vero Air c-bonded and the BioTracer were honoured with the iF DESIGN AWARD.

The iF DESIGN AWARD is awarded once a year by the world’s oldest independent design institution – this year comprising 63-strong, independent, international expert judges with their high and innovative design competence.

The “iF GOLD AWARD” was accepted by the designer Kurt Merki Jr., Product Manager for Tap Fittings Timo-Marcel Nagel and Head of PR Joseph Greilinger at the awards ceremony on 9th March in Munich.

Chairman of the Board of Management, Dr. Frank Richter said “Our aspiration is: to make designer bathrooms come alive. This is guaranteed by the highest quality, original design and comfort-enhancing technology. This brand essence defines our DNA worldwide, and it distinguishes everything we do. To our delight, the iF GOLD AWARD this year proves that we are on the right track”.

The C.1 design range perfectly reflects Duravit’s design language. The ergonomic handle with a recess underneath feels comfortable in the hand and permits a precise operation. Sophisticated details, such as the gap between the base plate and handle which has been reduced to a minimum, add to the elegant look.


Four different heights for a range of basin dimensions, three-hole tap fittings in two heights and wall-mounted fittings with a spout in two lengths provide comfort at the washbasin as well as matching design. C.1 also offers an ideal tap fitting solution for the bidet, shower and bathtub.

Luv, Vero Air c-bonded and the BioTracer were also honoured with the iF DESIGN AWARD. Offering a vision of the future, the BioTracer was first shown at ISH 2017. In line with all Duravit products, the BioTracer will offer exceptional comfort and hygiene functions, along with the ability to monitor urine to evaluate levels of health and wellbeing. The BioTracer is currently a prototype and once validated, Duravit plans to make the BioTracer available initially in mainland Europe.

The GROHE DESIGN team will unveil its ATRIO SPA collection during Milan Design Week, with a design installation showcasing the new products to the public.

As part of Fuorisalone, visitors will be invited to GROHE ATRIO’s exclusive launch at the newly-designed GROHE showroom at Via Crocefisso.

The GROHE showroom will be open to visitors starting on April 17th, who will be able to get hands on with the products in their latest trend colours:

  • GROHE ATRIO in striking Brushed Hard Graphite; GROHE ESSENCE in classy Warm Sunset; GROHE Lineare in purist Chrome.
  • GROHE ESSENCE Spa Colours and the luxurious shower AQUASYMPHONY, two product lines that stand for stylish design in a unique symbiosis of form and function, transforming the bathroom into a wellness oasis.

Grohe launches shower toilet campaign at international airports

Grohe, the world’s leading provider of sanitary fittings, launched an advertising campaign for the Grohe Sensia Arena intelligent shower toilet at 19 international airports in 15 countries.

With the ‘first class seats for everyone’ creative campaign, Grohe is targeting international travellers. The Grohe sensia arena is a premium, intelligent shower toilet that features an elegant design and breakthrough technology, while remaining an affordable product for everyone.

No other Grohe product has won as many design prizes as the Grohe sensia arena.

The campaign can be seen at the major hubs of London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt Airport and Amsterdam Schiphol.

The billboard activity represents the largest out-of-home advertising campaign in Grohe’s history and is expected to reach more than 20 million airport visitors.

The campaign activity at London Heathrow went live on Monday 12th march for two weeks, ending on Sunday 25th march. The billboards can be spotted at two locations; in Terminal 2’s link bridge and grand view, the main entrance point for Terminals 2 and 3.

Hamilton makes the guest ‘king’ at Danesfield House Hotel and Spa

Hamilton Litestat has taken the guest experience at Danesfield House Hotel and Spa to new heights with the introduction of its latest smart lighting and Maid-Call controls, giving visitors ultimate control during their stay.

The Grade II luxury Buckinghamshire hotel embarked on a long-term refurbishment programme in 2015 and turned to Hamilton to further improve and modernise the guest experience. Beginning with an initial 12 bedrooms, Danesfield House Hotel and Spa was looking for solutions that would bring in new technology, improve energy savings and reduce its carbon footprint while also remaining in-keeping with the period property.

Hamilton’s Project Team specified their Smart Lighting Control to create the perfect ambience in each room and area according to the time of day and guest usage. Each suite features 8 x 1-10V and 8 x 2A relay circuits with a DMX controller, which allows a series of lighting scenes to be programmed and set. In some of the bedrooms and en-suites, the DMX controls red, green and blue LED strip lights to create the perfect mood lighting and complement the décor. The lighting is activated by the hotel key card switch so that the appropriate lighting scene is activated when this is inserted.

Now fully in control of the lighting, guests also have more control over housekeeping services with Hamilton’s Maid-Call solution. Inside each suite is a coloured touchscreen controller where guests can indicate whether they would like their room cleaned or if they do not wish to be disturbed. A second touchscreen outside the room displays this message to housekeeping, helping to avoid embarrassing ‘walk in’ moments. Guests can also request assistance in their room using the Maid-Call system, helping to improve guest services during their stay.

To be in-keeping with the hotel’s stunning design, control plates and all other switches, wall plates and accessories were specified in a coordinated Linea-Scala design, finished in Satin Stainless with a Bright Chrome frame. The two-part design has a stepped edge for a classic and sophisticated look that fits seamlessly with the period property. There’s also a hint of the contemporary as the plate’s fixings are concealed using Hamilton’s patented four-point plate clipping system, CFX.

For ease of use, each control plate has been engraved so that every control button can be easily identified, while a special plate with US13, SHUKO and USA sockets was installed in each room to improve the comfort and experience of tech-savvy and international guests.

“We’re delighted with the finished restoration project,” says Danesfield House Hotel and Spa General Manager Anthony Cox. “We aim to offer each and every guest the best experience during their stay and although lighting control may seem like such a small part it can make a significant difference to a guest’s comfort. Every little feature counts, and the coordinated look Hamilton has provided in each of our bedroom suites reflects the quality and attention to detail that is synonymous with Danesfield House Hotel and Spa.”

Hamilton has provided us with a fantastic, high-tech solution that gives visitors a luxury experience while reducing energy usage. Bespoke Wonder at the Winter Gardens

Woven Axminster carpet by Wilton Carpets, has been installed in one of the South West’s leading venues, the Winter Gardens Pavilion, Weston-super-Mare, bringing a sense of the historic with a beautiful and opulent design.

The Winter Gardens Pavilion, is one of the seaside resort’s most famed architectural sights; a neo-Georgian building that first opened in 1927. After a £15m renovation under the ownership of Weston College, it is now one of the largest venues of its kind in the south-west of England, with an impressive ballroom that’s ideal for conferences, ceremonies and events.

Wilton Carpets turned to its library of historic designs for the Winter Gardens, proposing the intricate and opulent floral of Malabar as the ideal design to complement the building’s stunning interior. The pattern’s bold look has proven to work well within the Pavilion’s grand curved façade with its tall arching windows, columns and fine detailing.

Naomi Waterman, associate and head of interiors, AWW Inspired Environments, responsible for the design of the Winter Gardens Pavilion refurbishment, comments:

“The carpet design was led by the client, as they had a clear desire for a traditional, opulent pattern for which Malabar was perfect. We felt a single pattern throughout the Pavilion would lead to a more cohesive overall design, leaving the individual spaces open and flexible enough to cater for the varied functions taking place within the building.”

AWW Inspired Environments proposed a colour scheme for the carpet centred around a royal blue base colour, influenced by Weston College’s brand identity and a historical colour analysis of the building’s era. With other colours to coordinate tones found within soft furnishings and curtains, the result is a carpet that is bright and modern, yet which references the building’s formidable history.

“We were recommended Wilton Carpets by the main contractor on the project, Midas Group, and the process was simple and efficient,” continues Naomi. “Meeting tight deadlines, Wilton provided rapid sampling of the design in our chosen colourway so that we could arrange client sign-off. The carpet looks absolutely beautiful; both a testament to the building’s interior and Wilton’s craft.”

Using Wilton’s Malabar design, from its Classical Dimensions Ready to Weave collection, some 1180m2 of British wool-rich woven axminster was made for the Winter Gardens Pavilion by Wilton at its Wiltshire factory. Versital Marble Bar Tops Commissioned For New Whitbread Concept Cookhouse & Pub

Versital has been commissioned by interior designers JMDA Ltd to provide bespoke bar and kitchen pass tops for the latest project with hospitality giant Whitbread.

Cookhouse & Pub located in Oldbury, West Midlands, is the newest concept venue by the company and features Versital’s on-trend ‘Arabesque’ marble finish surfaces.

Described by Whitbread as ‘an informal, all day restaurant, with the relaxed vibe and affordability of a pub’ the new space is now a striking new eatery that has replaced the previous site.

“Much of the original interior was stripped out,” explained Simon Tyas, director of JMDA. “The kitchen and back of house areas were retained in the same location, but the kitchen was converted into a theatre-style, extending into the restaurant and including a bistro oven, so diners can see their food being prepared.”

Versital’s made-to-order surfaces were commissioned for the bar and kitchen pass tops in a luxurious white marble finish. The handcrafted surfaces bring a fresh and modern feel to the space, effortlessly complementing the contemporary colour palette of teal, mushroom and off white.

Punctuated with pops of ochre yellow and showcasing wooden and copper accents, the new restaurant displays industrial elements throughout for an informal yet sophisticated dining experience.

Custom furnishings provider Skopos Fabrics have unveiled a sophisticated new range of fabrics that show off the trending ‘new neutrals’.

Greys and metallics lead the way in forming an array of patterns on their new custom furnishings, available for the hotel industry from the celebrated company, who have provided furnishings for the industry for over forty years.

Contemporary library and reading lights by Vaughan to launch at London Design Week

Vaughan Designs will unveil a new collection of articulated library and reading lights in brass at London Design Week 2018.

A series of paired fabric lampshades and brass spun shades in different shapes will accompany the lights, all to be unveiled at the annual event, which takes place between 4-6 March for trade guests and from 7-9 March for all other attendees. London Design Week is the seminal event for the latest design products and trends.

Vaughan Designs were set up in 1983. The company is run by a former antiques dealer who identified a gap in the market for both stylish and classical lighting fixtures, which appealed to modern buyers.

Our header image, and the image below, are two examples from the new collection.

Vaughan will also boast a new addition to their floor lamp collection at the event, available in brass or bronze, with a glass table and mirror wall light attached. The light will feature jewel shapes and an embroidered linen design, with blue motifs.

As the world becomes ever more focused on ditching plastic, such as plastic straws, designers are re-thinking ways we can creatively use waste. Waste is now bizarrely, but wonderfully seen as a status symbol. Ikea introduced a range recently entirely devoted to waste. KUNGSBACKA features cupboard doors made from scrap wood from mills, old furniture and packaging materials. And burgeoning brand Pentatonic released a range furniture made from things like plastic, fizzy drink cans and smartphone screens. See their chair made of waste, above.

Revel in pastels

Grohe spotted this one a mile off. Last year’s obsession with ‘Millennial Pink’ has opened the gateway to a broad range of pastels, such as soft corals, which the brand describe, cheerfully as “youthful and optimistic”.

Experiment with jesmonite

Jesmonite is a favourite with designers, because it can be used to replicate the look of pretty much any surface or texture. The diverse material is making a big impact right now, thanks to the trend for Terrazzo. Grohe describe the material as having “tactile warmth”, inviting touching and in this light, owners form close relationships with the innovative material. What’s best is that it can literally form the surface of your dreams, without the stresses of buying in less functional, less hygienic ‘authentic’ products, like stone.

Bring the outside in with botanicals

This one’s been at boiling point for a while, but for 2018 the botanicals trend shows no signs of slowing. Now, wallpaper is the latest design item to be given a floral touch, as the trend moves forward and interior fans are investing in florals not only in their natural flower pots, but on the walls, too.

Make a statement with glass 

The expansive look and feel of glass compliments the ongoing trend for open spaces both at home, and at work. Glass represents freedom of expression and thought, and now that textured glass is back in, we’ll likely see a lot more statement glass ornamental features, as well as the material being used for fixtures. Britton Bathrooms have unveiled a new range of luxurious bathroom ceramics with Nano Glaze coating, a strong protector for surfaces which are prone to a build up of bacteria.

Oasis hotels and resorts ‘blend’ all-inclusive resort with boutique for new Sian Ka’an concept

Oasis Hotels & Resorts have revealed the title of their upscale ‘resort within a resort’ concept that aims to be as intimate as an Airbnb, but as luxurious as a grand resort.

The Sian Ka’an will open in Cancun, and Tulum, Mexico, although no official opening date has yet been slated.

The adults-only accommodation will be the most luxurious accommodation available at the group’s Grand Tulum and Grand Sens resort hotels, after a multi-million dollar cash injection.

The resort are yet to reveal the details of any design partnerships or style influences for the property; the hotel group’s key claim at this stage is reconciling the hotel market with that of Airbnb.

Intimate like Airbnb, luxurious like a grand resort

There will be 76 different Sian Ka’an room styles, some of which have their own private terraces with plunge pools and in-room whirlpools, so the Sian Ka’an will particularly suit romantic escapes.

Rooms will also have access to a personal concierge and butler service, as well as upscale in-room dining services and access to private bars.

Guests can access a private spa and Champagne bar

Grohe reveals plans to introduce 3D printing in 2018

As Grohe continues to count on its innovative strength in 2018, the company is planning to introduce 3D printing to its production process.

To mark this development, Grohe will launch its third ceramic line in March. In addition, Grohe is working on various product innovations in light of the 2019 ISH.

As digitalisation continues to expand, the firm’s CEO Michael Reuters’s will address the topic ‘Water as a resource in times of digitalisation’ during the World Market Leaders Summit in Schweich Hall, Germany on January 31.

Grohe’s projects continue the innovative approach of the year 2017. At the ISH in Frankfurt am Main, trade fair for bathroom, heating and air-conditioning technology, Grohe presented numerous new products, including Sense and Sense Guard.

With this intelligent water control system, Grohe is setting new standards for the smart home of the future. The system allows early detection and prevention of water damage.

Another highlight of the ISH was the presentation of the new Grohe shower toilet. Sensia Arena is now the shower toilet with the most numerous awards and has already received 14 design awards.

RainSelect, launched at November’s Sleep show, is an intuitive and convenient central control unit, providing control of between two to five shower functions, along with the regulation of water temperature and quantity.

Generous, 70 x 70 millimetre switches make selecting shower settings a tactile experience. Underlying this is hansgrohe’s Select technology, which controls the various functions on a purely mechanical basis.

hansgrohe RainSelectIts aesthetically sophisticated design and linear, horizontal shape make it a striking addition to the bathroom. Its unique, sleek silhouette, which gives the wall a clean and uncluttered look, was developed in collaboration with Phoenix Design.

There are two models to choose from: for the shower area, and a separate solution for bathtub showers. Three surface finishes enable customised and consistent bathroom design: white or black-backed glass, or the more traditional chrome-coloured metal.

In celebration of its 110th anniversary, the Hotel Walther commissioned Brintons to translate the elaborate designs of interior designer Virginia Maissen into woven Axminster rugs and fitted carpet to complement the refurbishment of the hotel.

The concept of the design was to create a modern, inviting and comfortable feel in this grand hotel with inspiration taken from its surroundings and history. Zürich-based interior designer Virginia Maissen worked with Brintons to redesign the interior to highlight the heritage of the hotel, but also incorporate modern art installations by Rolf Sachs and Sandro Fabbri.

Case Study: Brintons at Hotel Walther, SwitzerlandThe newly refurbished hotel, a member of the Relais & Châteaux group, unveiled its updated design earlier this year. The 17 bespoke carpet designs throughout are bold and abstract, in a colour palette of reds, greens and yellows that reference the hotel’s alpine surroundings.

Brintons collaborated closely with Virginia Maissen to translate her designs into Axminster carpet. The layering of imagery within the designs, mixing bold colours and the subtle photographic representation exploited the full range of the carpet manufacturer’s 32-colour High Definition Weave; a unique Brintons’ innovation that allows for infinite design possibilities and highly dynamic visuals.

The end result is a beautifully detailed collection of bespoke carpets in the lobby, fine dining room, stairs and smoking lounge of the hotel.

Virginia Maissen commented: “I am so proud of the bespoke carpets, Brintons translated all my designs perfectly, the stand out details coupled with a classic pattern brings together both of our design visions. The 17 unique carpet designs demanded special attention from both sides, and Brintons delivered on time and within budget. This project perfectly demonstrates Brintons’ skill in creating one-off pieces to a client specification.”

Case Study: Brintons at Hotel Walther, SwitzerlandAntique treasures and decorations have been reinterpreted to reflect the hotel’s history: original ceilings and rounded archways from the early twentieth century have been exposed with the help of local craftsmen. Specially designed wall tapestries, curtains, and carpets created by Brintons have been added to complement the furnishings of each room.

The 4-star Hotel Walther is a third-generation family-run business, currently headed by Anne-Rose and Thomas Walther. Brintons is well known in Switzerland for its design expertise and market presence, and has an established reputation for high quality custom Axminster carpets and rugs.

Jean Nouvel has created an architectural wonder in the desert. It includes products by Duravit, designed by Philippe Starck.

A commission that was unusual even for the French star architect and Pritzker prize winner Jean Nouvel – the creation of the first all-purpose museum in the Arab world – and the first in the twenty-first century, a building that is intended to stand as a symbol for Abu Dhabi.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi was officially opened on 11 November 2017. The spectacular building on Saadiyat Island will show 300 objects on loan from thirteen leading museums in France. However, the greatest attraction is the building itself.

The architecture is modern but timeless, incorporating elements from Abu Dhabi’s architectural tradition. Jean Nouvel took inspiration from an Arab medina (old town) to create a building whose domed metal roof weighs as much as the Eiffel Tower in Paris but is supported by just four columns – a technical feat that is also an aesthetic experience.

A total of fifty-five different buildings form a museum city on the island in the Gulf, covered by a huge steel roof with a diameter of 180 metres.

Passages and corridors wind their way through this cool white labyrinth, with steps up to the flat roofs of some of the building blocks to enable visitors to see the spectacular domed roof from close up. This unique design consists of almost 8,000 stars of different sizes and angles, superimposed in seven layers.

Like a roof made of overlapping palm leaves, this structure provides shade and protection from the hot desert sun. The effect is breathtaking: “It produces a poetic, almost magical rain of light,” says architect Jean Nouvel. At night the effect is reversed when the internally lit building shines like a miniature night sky.

In the white bathrooms the works of another French architect and designer are on show: toilets by Philippe Starck, designed for Duravit. Starck was also inspired by tradition in his design of the toilet. The Starck 1 toilet recalls its historical predecessor, a bucket – interpreted in a completely new way, of course.

Jean Nouvel’s building occupies a site of almost 100,000 square metres, with 8,600 square metres of exhibition space, including 6,400 for the permanent exhibition and 2,000 for temporary exhibitions. The first exhibition will feature Leonardo da Vinci’s “La Belle Ferronnière”, a self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh and works by Pablo Picasso.

The made-to-order range introduces nine unique and multi-tasking designs that draw from a diverse array of inspiration within folklore, architecture and botanical motifs. These come together to provide carpets that work in both traditional and modern interiors.

One of the most difficult influences to turn into carpet, Batik references hand-blocked fabrics and the subtle effects this technique brings. Kit Kemp says: ‘it’s a new way to bring one off craftwork into you home.” Batik comes in two striking colourways dominated by red and blue.

A strong architectural look, which is ‘one of my favourites, so simple but graphic and strong’ explains Kit. Available in six colourways, including red on blue and yellow on black.

By Way
A classic herringbone infused with bright colour combinations that Kit describes as ‘having fun in a colourful and carefree way’. Available in four high-contrast colourways.

Domino
Based on traditional Turkish carpets, this design has a large diamond repeat that Kit says, ‘needs to be seen to be believed’. A definite ode to the Arts and Crafts in four colourways including dynamic shades of blue and terracotta.

Flower and Berry
There is more than meets the eye with this overall Botanical pattern. ‘This is a design that will work well in both traditional and modern settings’, says Kit. Available in five colourways featuring red on off-white, off-white on blue and off-white on pea green

Leaf Cut
Inspired by nature, this is a carpet that Kit describes as, ‘falling leaves in a modern way that will look interesting in any environment’. Leaf Cut comes in two popping colourways, blue with leaves of orange and red with green.

A large repeat that looks good in grand areas, tribal influences abound. The Open Plan pattern ‘takes the traditional and turns it into something that says today’, explains Kit. This pattern comes in four colour combinations, including three with an off-white base cloth.

A tweed design which Kit describes as having ‘flecks of fabulous tiny vibrant colours” It is a modern-day classic. Tweed Fleck is available in seven high-impact colourways including red, teal and blue.

Squiggle
A simple linear geometric design that still manages to make a statement and which Kit believes will make ‘halls and stairways look tailored’. With inversed colours available, this pattern comes in five other off-white combinations.

Kelly Hoppen MBE has joined forces with leading carpet manufacturer Brintons to create a bold new collection of contemporary woven carpets.

The new venture is the renowned interior designer’s first ever carpet collection and will be launched at this year’s Sleep, the annual hotel design event taking place in London today and tomorrow.

The Kelly Hoppen Collection by Brintons brings the designer’s unparalleled eye for trend-leading design to the commercial carpet sector. The result is a distinctive new contemporary aesthetic that completely eschews the typical ‘swirl and block’ patterns for which the commercial/hospitality sector is traditionally known.

Instead, the dynamic collection consists of 13 geometric and organic designs in on-trend colourways that reflect the designer’s award-winning design style and pared-back aesthetic. Kelly Hoppen took inspiration from diverse influences ranging from geometric shapes to elements found in everyday surroundings such as cracks in a pavement and splashes of paint.

“I wanted to do something quite cutting edge and out there compared to what we see at the moment…I think it’s different and it’s in the forefront of design in terms of commercial carpeting, so I am extremely excited,” she says.

After 41 years in design, Kelly Hoppen relished the fresh challenge of designing her first contract carpets: “It’s been fun, it’s been enlightening and I’ve learnt a lot from it. Carpet is an interesting product to design. There is an array of materials and textures and it’s a challenge to design a carpet that is hardwearing but also luxurious, beautiful and comfortable. Although you think of it as a flat surface, it is three-dimensional so the design process is complex. You have to think carefully about scale too as the design needs to work in large expansive areas as well as in narrower spaces such as guestrooms and corridors. Not only that, you need to design a surface that other designers can put their own style on too. Once you get it right though, you just know.”

The designer continued: “In terms of the collaboration with Brintons, there is mutual admiration and respect -Brintons is an incredible company with great heritage. I think this is just the start of a really wonderful collaboration. With this collection, each piece that we’ve created is different and is a statement in itself. I think it’s going to be brilliant.”

AURORA by Katarina Kotulacova is a dramatic installation made of two-layer hand-blown glass, which uses iPod-controlled, colour-changing LEDs to imitate the aurora borealis, whilst Symphony by Jiri Krisica required applying new coating technology to crystal tubes in a way that produces a subtle and impressively decorative gradient.

Greek mattress manufacturers, CANDIA, has announced a unique new Bodyfix Collection, made entirely by hand by skilled artisans with 100% natural materials and fabrics treated with olive oil. Moduleo has extended its range of luxury vinyl flooring to include five woods, one stone and three abstract designs. Following its debut at Grand Designs Live in Birmingham, GROHE’s UK Marketing Director Raj Mistry, has labelled the event a ‘tremendous success’ as it drew big crowds to its stand to learn more about its innovative water products.

This year, the popular consumer home and renovation show welcomed thousands of visitors, many of whom were drawn to GROHE’s stand. One of the big attractions to the GROHE stand was its activity with celebrity TV chef Ed Baines, who has partnered with GROHE to support its Blue Home kitchen tap which dispenses filtered still, medium or sparkling water on demand.

Project Spotlight: Wilton Carpets at Hardwick Hall

A stunning carpet full of classic design cues and woven by Wilton Carpets now graces areas of Hardwick Hall, a four-star luxury country hotel considered one of the North East’s most charming places to stay.

When looking for new carpet to adorn its Colman Suite, Crush Bar, corridors and lounge areas; the hotel turned to Wilton Carpets’ bespoke service to create a design perfectly in keeping with its unique style. An oversize repeating scroll is layered beneath a pin-line interlocking hexagon and surrounded by a decorative border, tones of taupe and grey giving a sophisticated tonal look.

The bordered design serves to frame the three areas of the Colman Suite, which can be separated to accommodate different functions and covers and to provide definition to the adjacent Crush Bar. The design also works well to define the lounge area of the hotel and to provide a striking carpet in corridors.

Sam Dean, senior designer, Wilton Carpets, commented: “We worked with Space I.D to develop a carpet design that referenced the classical elegance of Hardwick Hall’s 18th century architecture, while marking its status as one of the North East’s most luxurious destinations. Through blending sophisticated contemporary geometrics with elegant florals and classic fret borders, we’ve managed to achieve the difficult balance between historic reference and modern intention. A bordered design such as this is also a great way to define individual areas, at the same time giving a unified look.”

Installed by Pocklington Carpets, the 850 square metres of bespoke carpet were manufactured in Wilton’s Wiltshire factory, axminster woven in an 80% British wool and 20% nylon blend for wear and appearance retention. In a seven-row quality, the carpet can withstand high footfall levels, while it’s wool and nylon mix remains easy to clean, keeping the suite, bar, lounge and corridors looking their best throughout constant use.

After the successful launch of HygieneGlaze in 2015, the innovative ceramic glaze has been further developed by Duravit’s research and development team, and now has a new formula: HygieneGlaze 2.0.

The new HygieneGlaze 2.0, which is baked into the ceramic during firing, is not only extremely effective, but also acts very quickly. After just six hours, 90% of bacteria are killed. After twelve hours, a 99.9% reduction is achieved – the same effect as its predecessor, but in half the time. After 24 hours, this percentage rises to 99.999% – an unprecedented level.

Additional activation mechanisms and components have been deployed in this new, patented process. The optimized formula of HygieneGlaze 2.0 contains a new combination of metal ions and other active substances, which is particularly effective in eradicating bacteria like E. coli, for example. The effectiveness is based on an oligodynamic reaction, which illustrates the detrimental effect of positively charged metal ions on bacteria.

HygieneGlaze 2.0 is integrated into the glaze during firing. This manufacturing process ensures an extremely effective reduction in pathogens such as escherichia coli. Baked into the ceramic and extending from the interior to the rim of the toilet or urinal, HygieneGlaze 2.0 is effective in the areas particularly susceptible to the accumulation of bacteria.

The effect of the innovative glaze on bacteria was so powerful during the hygienic microbiological tests that the measuring procedure results far exceeded the current limit. For this reason, subsequent investigations considered kinetics for the first time. Beforehand, only the starting and finishing concentrations after 24 hours were measured. Now, researchers can measure effectiveness over time and thereby show how many bacteria have been wiped out after 6, 12 and 24 hours.

HygieneGlaze 2.0 is available for all toilets and urinals in the Architec, Darling New, D-Code, DuraStyle, Happy D.2, ME by Starck, P3 Comforts, Starck 3 and Vero Air ranges.

Hotel Indigo Cardiff is a boutique hotel that has been designed by Matthews Mee Interior Design to evoke classic Welsh heritage.

As with all Hotel Indigo establishments, the surrounding area was carefully researched to discover the location’s intricacies, its history, special events, industry and people. The hotel is then designed around this to provide a unique and more meaningful experience that reflects the hotel’s location.

The Cardiff hotel, which will be managed by Redefine|BDL Hotels, features 122 guest bedrooms and 122 bathrooms, with a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill restaurant located on the roof of the building. The greatest attention has been paid to crafting unique spaces throughout the hotel that reflect the history and vibrancy of the Welsh capital. The guest rooms are themed ‘Made in Wales’, ‘Welsh Industry’ and ‘Music’, with each featuring local art and regionally-sourced natural materials to reflect the city’s strong legacy.

Hamilton Litestat at Hotel Indigo CardiffMatthews Mee wanted to mix contemporary style and modern functionality with its heritage-rich designs. It sought an electrical accessories supplier that could support with modern solutions that would complement the design themes while delivering a classy, high-quality look and adhering to the latest guest demands.

Working with contractor Kier and local wholesaler Evans Electrical, Hamilton Litestat was chosen as a solutions provider. Hamilton’s sleek and stylish Hartland collection of box-fix decorative wiring accessories was nominated as the perfect match for the interior design theme. With a vast number of rooms to furnish, a combination of Hartland 1, 2 and 3-gang rocker switches were specified for controlling lighting in each room.

2-gang dual-switched sockets were selected for power supply while further dual-switched sockets equipped with two USB charger points were also fitted at bedsides for easy access. One USB port is 1A rated for mobile phone charging and a second 2.1A USB port is for charging tablets and other devices. The Base range includes vanity units for the Val and Laufen Pro S bathroom collections, together with prefabricated Pro S slim washbasin packs. The vanity units for Laufen’s Pro S and Val washbasins have been fitted with elegant narrow handles in aluminium while the vanity units for the Pro S slim washbasins, are finished flush with the front of the furniture and come without handles to feature softclose drawers.

There are matching medium and tall cabinets available with a matching laundry basket is also available for all versions at 335mm deep. For individual bathroom scenarios Laufen also offers the option of the 335mm-deep single-door tall cabinet in a bespoke width between 250 and 450mm, and up to a maximum height of 1650mm, allowing bathroom planners additional options when planning challenging bathrooms.

Another practical feature is a small, open-sided free-hanging mirror cabinet element with two trays. It brings additional mirror surfaces and further easily-accessible storage space into the bathroom. In addition, there are also four sizes of mirror cabinets available in the Base range, which are coordinated to the washbasin widths, offering an ideal complement and the perfect finishing touch.

GROHE Bau Ceramic collection – versatility for a modern life
With its soft round shapes, the timeless Bau Ceramic collection fits harmoniously into any bathroom setting. Its understated design makes it the perfect choice for both residential and public buildings, such as hotels. The basin collection comprises of three wall-hung basins in widths of 55cm, 60cm and 65cm and a hand rinse basin that is 45cm wide. A pedestal and semi pedestal are available to cover the water and waste pipe work. The collection also has built-in basins that can be dropped in or built in from under the counter. For WCs, the collection offers a broad range of products that are both rimless and timeless. In addition to a wall-hung, wash-down WC, there is a floor-standing version with a horizontal or vertical outlet. WC seats with optional soft-closing covers complete the series. In addition to Bau Ceramic, GROHE will also launch the Euro Ceramic collection to fit the matching GROHE portfolio. Euro Ceramic encapsulates contemporary style to create a modern bathroom that can be enjoyed for years to come. The bathroom ceramics coordinate effortlessly with the mixers and fittings in GROHE’s Eurosmart and Eurostyle lines, as well as with Eurosmart Cosmopolitan and Eurostyle Cosmopolitan. The range development was centred around the sophisticated toilet bowls, which possess a number of unique properties including rimless flushing technology, invisible fastenings plus the super hygienic ProGuard finish, to set them apart from the competition. Held on the second floor of the Museum, in a light and airy space, this exhibition gave you the opportunity to meet and catch up with 27 BCFA Members based in the north and see their latest and best contract furnishing products.

A small but quality event meant that you were really able to talk to the exhibitors. Some of the stands that really stood out were Maine who showcased some amazing rust-effect cabinets; Johnson Tiles whose simple yet elegant stand showed off their products beautifully; and Tektura Wallcoverings who had a monochrome and bold geometric theme for their stand.

The first day was concluded with a ‘In Conversation With’ discussion which was led by Tonje Odegard from SPACE magazine who discussed the hospitality market with Founder and Creative Director of NoChintz, Lucy Goddard.

BCFA Open – Manchester – Johnson Tiles

They touched on the importance of ‘Instagram-ability’ of a space today, discussing how the smaller details are important and how the end-user really appreciates them. They also went on to discuss new hotel concepts that we are increasingly seeing pop up including a trend towards the ‘new-age’ style like, forest retreats or yoga inspired hotels.

Following the discussion guests and exhibitors could enjoy a well-deserved drink and were treated to a selection of tasty nibbles and canapes. Throughout both days there was also a chance to get your hands-dirty and get involved with some creative workshops. These included the return of the wonderful Patternistas who held their pattern-making workshop. You could also practice your print-making techniques with Sheffield-based artist Samantha Groom.

Officially launched earlier this year, and first seen at Clerkenwell Design Week, there’s a new player on the outdoor accessory scene – Jalu – bringing high-quality and stylish lighting to the UK market whilst offering designers and landscapers a truly unique product for outdoor spaces.

Hotel Designs editor Daniel Fountain sat down with the founders of the company – Alison Cavey and Juliet Kauffmann – to discuss the company’s origins, the product and their plans for the future…

2017 has been a monumental year for Juliet and Alison. Having previously worked together in innovation strategy consulting for more than 15 years, they tell me that after years of working with start-up companies and commercialising new technologies they wanted a piece of the action.

“We wanted to work in a completely different sector and to be able to focus on a product and get excited and passionate about it,” Alison tells me.

That decision led the duo to developing a range of striking, attractive outdoor lighting pieces that make up Jalu’s product range. “We travelled a lot for work and for pleasure to places like Australia and around the Mediterranean, where there is a fantastic outdoor-based lifestyle, and we thought we could bring a little more of that vibe to the UK,” Alison adds.

“The first idea we had was around outdoor lighting which is very traditional here in the UK. In Spain and Italy you can find some really interesting, contemporary pieces – but they’re not designed for the UK market. That was our starting point – making a product suited to this market, using innovative, British-based suppliers who are a big part of our operation,” Alison explains.

It’s taken the pair around 18 months to get the company to where it is today, and there has been a learning curve along that road; namely in finding the right materials to produce the pieces and going through some several early prototypes. The final method takes on a casting approach using a material called Jesmonite (named as one of the products of the year at this year’s London Design Week).

Looking at the pieces, it’s clear to see that it certainly is a durable material to work with. The beauty of the products, too, is given the vagaries of the British weather the finish does not fade and is entirely frost-proof. Being considerably lighter than stone and concrete also means the pieces are easy to move, making them ideal for ever-changing layouts for outdoor spaces. This forms part of Jalu’s adoption of a current design trend – ‘bringing the inside, out’ – which sees indoor living spaces extended to the outdoors.

Juliet explains: “We wanted to create a product that looks just as good outside or inside, and this adds to the flexibility of usage for our clients. There is also an extraordinary versatility in terms of colour and finish, so we can create completely bespoke products for the end user.

“We saw two key markets for these high-end, handmade pieces – we originally targeted working with interior designers, garden designers, landscapers to get access their clients. But we’ve always seen a strong opportunity to work with boutique hotels, restaurants, spas – clients that can make a real statement with Jalu products,” she adds.

So when do they see as the ideal time to get involved in the design process?

“We can come in at any time during a project – due to the versatility of the product, so if a client comes to us and they already have a colour scheme, we can fit in around that as best we can. But ideally, we would come in earlier. The important thing to remember is these lights are a statement, they’re a feature – they’re not designed to be hidden around a corner, or to light something else; they are meant to be part of the design, so the earlier they can be incorporated into the design process, the better for us. Not to mention there is the potential for customisation or completely bespoke designs,” Juliet says.

And, although they are designed to be portable, they can be hard-wired too – the pieces are mains-powered, entirely IP65 rated so perfect for outside provided the outdoor socket has a residual current device (RCD) on it, or goes through to an indoor socket.

“So we see it as a standalone item that you can just plug in like you would with any device. But with a loop-in, loop-out system they can be wired up together. In terms of practicality, these are large pieces that wouldn’t have worked with a small, solar bulb; they needed something a bit more substantial, so we use high-quality LED luminaires, which are obviously energy-efficient and should last you a long time,” Alison concludes.

So far, Alison and Juliet have received considerable positive feedback from the design world. And with more designs on the horizon, there is more to come from Jalu. Now up-and-running, the next step is to target independent and boutique hoteliers where the duo feel the product is perfectly suited.

Kobe UK to showcase at Sleep event

Luxury fabric specialist, Kobe, will join other prestigious brands to introduce its new window décor, upholstery and soft furnishings collections at Sleep in November.

The two-day event takes place at the Business Design Centre in London where Kobe will unveil its latest ranges including its new room high and Boutique collections.

Kobe’s new range of room highs – the stylish, extra wide fabrics for window décor – are more than 300cm high with the pattern printed or woven horizontally across, making matching patterns and sewing seams a thing of the past.

The three new flame retardant collections include Arrow, a woven jacquard with a geometric pattern in 14 colours. Lines has a mix of matt and metallic look yarns in complementing and contrasting colours to create an all-over abstract design, available in 11 metallic tinted colourways.

From September 17th–20th, Hypnos showcased its latest innovations to interior designers, including the Regal Signature no turn mattress, a luxury, handcrafted product and the new Paris sofa bed, specifically designed to meet the demands and rigours of the hospitality sector.

Project Spotlight: Dernier & Hamlyn checks in at Four Seasons again

Dernier & Hamlyn recently completed its third project for luxury hotel brand Four Seasons following successful commissions in London and Baku.

In partnership with Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, the London-based bespoke lighting specialists manufactured unique antique brass chandeliers for public areas throughout the Four Seasons Hampshire hotel that utilised a range of a range of its artisans’ skills.

Nine 12-arm pendants 1m high and some 1.2m across were produced for the hotel’s drawing room and five chandeliers hand wrapped in rope were produced for the hotel’s lounge and reception areas requiring painstaking attention to detail to achieve the desired effect.

Dernier & Hamlyn also updated and rewired many of the hotel’s existing light fittings to bring them in line with modern standards and wired vintage lighting that had been sourced by the MBDS team too.

Martin Brudnizki Design Studio said: “We’ve used Dernier & Hamlyn for a number of MBDS’ projects from small restaurants to extremely large hotels. We are always impressed by their knowledge and their expertise and their ability to problem solve rather than just deliver lighting. This was demonstrated again for Four Seasons Hampshire where they balanced the requirements of our design concepts with practicality, aesthetic beauty and affordability.”

A hot and stuffy hotel room is not conducive to a good night’s sleep. Research suggests that if the temperature of a room is too high, then it will take longer for an individual to fall asleep and, when they finally do, this sleep can be disturbed leading to guests feeling irritable in the morning.

So how can you make sure your rooms – and your guests – remain cool and comfortable throughout the summer months?

Here Chris Tame, Mitre Linen’s National Sales Manager, provides us with his expert tips and advice to ensure that your guests experience a refreshing night’s sleep – even on the warmest of evenings.

1. Choose crisp cotton bed linen
Pure 100% cotton is a breathable fabric, which means it has the ability to transfer moisture away from the skin. This will keep your beds and your guests feeling cool and fresh all night long. Cotton is also soft to the touch and is a naturally hypoallergenic fabric which can also promote a comfortable sleeping environment. The higher the thread count, then the tighter the weave of the fabric, which adds to both its luxuriousness and its durability. Look for bed linen made with 100% cotton and with a thread count over 200 for a soft, luxurious and cooling feel.

2. Try a summer duvet
This is a good time of the year to replace a winter duvet with a lighter summer weight duvet – or to opt for an all year round 10.5 tog duvet so you don’t have to change them seasonally. Microfibre duvets are particularly good throughout the warmer summer months as, although they are light, they still feel luxurious and snuggly to sleep under. Choose one with a 100% cotton cover to promote an even cooler and crisp environment.

3. Shop around for innovative products
Small details can make a big difference to a guest’s stay, which is why we love the Coolguard pillow protector. Torquay B&B Tyndale wins AA 5 stars after Mitre Linen makeover

A boutique B&B in Torquay has been given an AA 5 stars B&B award plus a breakfast award thanks to the help of a Mitre Linen makeover. Daniel Kilik and Andrew Burton run Tyndale, a contemporary boutique B&B in the coastal resort.

They invited Mitre Linen to work closely with them to help them achieve a unique look for each of their guest rooms. Laura Webber, Mitre’s Regional Sales Manager, visited their B&B to advise on the best products for both the property and their guests.

As Daniel and Andrew were looking for something unique, Laura recommended that they use Mitre’s bespoke soft furnishings service, where they could choose from countless prints and fabrics and be guided throughout the project.

One room was given a striking geometric look and feel using black and gold while another was transformed with on trend denim colours and a crushed velvet headboard in silver for the beautiful new bed.

Taking inspiration from a room’s green wallpaper, another bedroom was given a crisp new look using curtains, runners and a mixture of cushions in Rhapsody aqua fabric. They also bought the Duke toppers from the Heritage range plus Tencel pillows and Microfibre duvets from the Luxury range as well as luxurious white bathrobes.

Daniel said: “When we took over the property in 2011, it was a run-down 3 star rated guest house in desperate need of some love and attention.

Chris Tame, Mitre Linen’s National Sales Manager, says: “Even when they are regularly renovated, hotel bathrooms tend to be heavily used by guests which makes them easy to look tired.”

Here he gives his tips to refresh a bathroom in a cost effective way to ensure the rooms are not out of action for any length of time…

1. Update your bathroom blinds
Windows are a focal point in any room which makes it important to regularly update and refresh your bathroom blinds. With heavy use, they can easily become splashed with shower gel, toothpaste and even make-up over time. Kobe UK to showcase ranges at Sleep 2017

Luxury fabric specialist, Kobe, will join other prestigious brands to introduce its new window décor, upholstery and soft furnishings collections at Sleep in November.

The two-day event takes place at the Business Design Centre in London where Kobe will unveil its latest ranges including its new room high and Boutique collections.

Kobe’s new range of room highs – the stylish, extra wide fabrics for window décor – are more than 300cm high with the pattern printed or woven horizontally across, making matching patterns and sewing seams a thing of the past.

The three new flame retardant collections include Arrow, a woven jacquard with a geometric pattern in 14 colours. Lines has a mix of matt and metallic look yarns in complementing and contrasting colours to create an all-over abstract design, available in 11 metallic tinted colourways.

Enchanted by Kobe
Buccari is a marquisette fabric woven with 100% Trevira CS yarns. The metallic look yarns create an elegant, supple fabric and come in 27 shades.

Boutique Collection from Kobe UK

The Boutique collection of curtain and upholstery fabrics, is suitable for both domestic and contract use. This lavish mix of innovative textiles features sumptuous velvet, woven jacquard, cool cotton and a soft satin appearance. A palette of rich deep and softly nostalgic tones complements the geometric, floral, paisley and botanical patterns.

The collection includes Clemence and Adore, the former featuring a beautiful floral pattern on a subtle satin base and is available in three colours. Adore is woven with a range of vibrant coloured matt and shiny yarns, in a stunning paisley design to create a multi-dimensional effect on the damask pattern. It is available in eight colours.

Another range within the Boutique collection is Henry, a sumptuous velvet, made from 30% cotton, 20% polyester and 50% viscose. The palette of rich deep and neutral tones comes in a range of nine colours .

As Kobe’s Boutique upholstery collections are above 80% natural fibres, they are FR exempt when used in conjunction with a suitable flame retardant interliner. Alternatively they can be supplied with an ACE FR treatment which passes domestic upholstery (cigarette and match) BS5852 part 1, source 0 and 1, and contract upholstery (Crib 5) BS 5852 part 1, source 5 (Crib 5).

Following a successful show last year, Hamilton is again returning to interior design exhibition Decorex on 17-20 September 2017, held at Syon Park, London. At the event, Hamilton will launch their popular Hartland CFX® and Sheer CFX® ranges in a new primed finish that can be painted to match any interior colour or theme, making customisation even more accessible.

The new primed finish plates will be displayed on Stand H37a at the show, which is a key event for interior designers. Signbox delivers stunning brass-effect directory for prestigious London office building

Signbox has supplied a bespoke tenant directory sign for the reception area at 12 Arthur Street, near London Bridge. Having won the opportunity with contractors Kingly Developments through a competitive tender process in January 2017, the work was completed in mid-June.

The project formed a key part of the extensive reception and lift lobby refurbishment in this prestigious office building which currently lists Prudential and A.M. Best among its tenants.

Signbox manufactured the directory sign in-house on a Tekcel EXR router using 20mm thick acrylic and 6mm thick aluminium. The sign components were finished with a tarnished brass metal effect, a revolutionary process that applies a veneer of a metal coating to the surface and gives the look and feel of solid metal.

This Metall-FX manufacturing process involves artisan hand-finishing, polishing and painting multiple layers to achieve the appearance of aged brass, matching other architectural details in the build. The surface edges of the sign were bevelled with a pencil round router bit and sanded to a specific grit finish to achieve the optimum surface. Though it was time-consuming, the weight and cost savings over traditional brass fabrication were considerable.

“The architects on the project, Morrow + Lorraine, had originally requested a solid metal fabrication that would have been very expensive to produce,” explains Signbox managing director Mark Bartlett. “With our extensive experience of manufacturing techniques, we were able to value engineer the design, presenting an alternative proposal which offered significant cost savings to the client. We also worked closely with the specialist concrete cladding contractor – Graphic Relief – in order to facilitate a first fix of the support channels to secure the directory to the wall behind reception.”

“We have worked with Kingly Developments on a number of high-profile projects over the years,” Bartlett adds. “We were delighted to team up with them again on this project and, together with the architects and other specialist contractors, deliver a finished product that met all of the client’s expectations, while also coming in under budget.”
