Teamed with hand-pleated cream silk shades, the lamps offer energy efficient, ambient lighting of superb quality.

Finely cast in brass and finished in subtle brushed steel, the smart single arm wall brackets perfectly complement the delicate mottled marble, cool cream walls and black glass finishes. Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra Celebrates Grand Opening March 29

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Traditional Khmer music, Buddhist monks, Cambodia’s deputy prime minister and apsaras will help announce the grand opening of one of Southeast Asia’s most anticipated new hotels March 29 as the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra makes its debut. The hotel takes the stage in Phnom Penh as the first new five-star hotel to open in the capital in more than a decade. Its eight restaurants and bars, expansive meetings facilities, spa, sports club and executive lounge herald an emergence of sorts for a city that’s seen more stasis than dynamism in recent years.

Located on the banks of a canal, with panoramic views of both the Mekong River and the Bassac, the Sofitel defies easy identification as one kind of hotel or another. Its 45-meter swimming pool, ample pool decks and ambitious So Spa, a wellness concept that debuted in London last year, tempt the resort-minded.

The USD 50 million hotel development is third in a group that includes the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra, where Lamoot served as general manager for five years, and the Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra. The Siem Reap (Angkor) property in particular has won international acclaim as one of the finest resorts in Southeast Asia.

Accommodation ranges across seven classes, from 121 Superior rooms to 45 Luxury, 23 Junior Suites, 11 Prestige Suites and one Opera Suite. Wooden floors, glass-walled baths and classic appointments distinguish every option. More than 150 of the hotel’s rooms overlook the Mekong.

In the hotel’s majestic lobby, Le Bar whets the appetite for the myriad food and beverage opportunities beyond. The possibilities span a range of culinary traditions and styles. La Coupole features Indochinese and French cuisines. Do Forni is Italian. Fu Lu Zu is the Chinese restaurant. Hachi offers up Old World Japan. And Chocolat is a Belgian patisserie.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. Announces Future Ritz-Carlton Reserve Location

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. announced an agreement with a joint venture between Grupo Questro and Trinity Investments L.L.C. at a signing ceremony on the 11th February, for The Ritz-Carlton to operate a Ritz-Carlton Reserve to be developed within Mexico. The scenic Mexican town will add new lustre to the destination with the 2014 opening of the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve project in the country. Nestled among 800 feet of oceanfront along Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, 124 private, single-story, oceanfront villas will each have breathtaking panoramic views across the Sea of Cortez in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Historic Los Cabos dates its legacy to the 16th century and the Spanish Conquistadors, but today is known as one of the most desirable vacation getaways in North America.

“We have looked at many sites in Mexico over the years, and believe the location at Los Cabos will offer our sophisticated travellers an exciting new place to explore and enjoy. It is an added pleasure to be working with our solid developers, Grupo Questro and Trinity Investments.” said Herve Humler, president, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company L.L.C. “The concept of the resort is simple and yet exudes style and luxurious levels of comfort. It will provide a complete escape to the unexpected; a private, exclusive leisure experience that blends unique elements of the local culture, history, and heritage with intuitive individual service, exquisite indigenous design, casual ambiance, and respect for the surrounding environment,” said Humler. Design inspiration for each Reserve is taken from the unique environment in which each property is based. From native architectural signatures and innovative local art, to indigenous furniture and motifs inspired by regional tradition, every design element of a Ritz-Carlton Reserve powerfully locates guests in a sense of place.

Eduardo Sánchez-Navarro, RT, CEO of Grupo Questro, said, “After a great deal of intensive work identifying the site and working on the feasibility and designs, we are delighted to have signed with The Ritz-Carlton as our management company of choice, a globally recognized luxury brand who will add tremendous value to the wonderful 30 acre site.” He went on to add, “Every detail of the concept for the Ritz-Carlton Reserve brand extension marries perfectly with the exclusive boutique retreat that we are creating. As the name suggests, it’s something very special indeed, it’s a limited edition, like a Reserve vintage.”

The hotel will offer one, two and three-bedroom villas, each with private infinity plunge pools, outdoor terraces with intimate fireplaces, outdoor showers and butler service. Additional resort features and amenities within the Puerto Los Cabos mixed-use development include a world-class Spa, Desert Botanical Theme Park, Fisherman’s Wharf, a 500-slip marina, two private championship golf courses, designed by Jack Nicklaus & Greg Norman and proximity to the town of San Jose del Cabo and the airport.

In addition, the construction of a five star caliber luxury resort in Mexico will bring jobs to Los Cabos, both during the construction phase and once the resort commences operations. The economic impact of A Ritz-Carlton Reserve provides long term benefits to the area and local citizens, and will help to enhance the reputation of Los Cabos as an exclusive destination for international tourists.

Miniview: The Midland Grand becomes Marriott’s St. Pancras Renaissance

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

In government hands for years, the Midland Grand slid from being one of the great hotels of London into decay. A glorious castle proudly announcing the great railway terminus behind it, the turrets and gothic columns dominate this part of the Euston Road, making the great train shed of Kings Cross look humble alongside. Alongside other great railway hotels (see Andaz, the Queens in Leeds, the Royal in Hull and yes, even the Mohonk nr Poughkeepsie in New York State) this was not just an hotel but an icon of an age. Along with other great railway hotels, it has now been rejuvenated, to finally to serve once more as great hotel.Recommended for demolition in the 1960’s after Government agency British Rail let it slide into decay, the exterior still carries the stains of history. Spang marks can still be seen on the stonework, although the destruction caused by the bombing of WW2 has been long since repaired. A campaign in which poet John Betjeman, a railway enthusiast, played a large part was responsible for saving the building from the wreckers. It is fitting then that a modest statue of the poet is on the railway concourse just outside the hotel. The campaign was also a contributor to the founding of the Victorian Society, now a leading conservation group.

Despite my reservations over the treatment of the outside, the treatment of the interiors deserves a great hallelujah of delight. Interior designers and architects, developer and hotelier all seem to have shared a common pleasure in the restoration of interiors that the neglect of British Rail probably did a great deal to save – after all a more active owner would probably have remodelled the interior and in the process destroyed many of the finishes now kept.

    DesignRelief Fundraising

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Design Relief is a new initiative to raise money to fund ShelterBox’s work in disaster-hit Japan, with the aim of tapping into the Design Community for support.ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide. It does so in a very simple but innovative & hugely effective way – providing a box full of items to provide shelter. A tent, blankets, multi fuel stove, cooking implements, tool set – even a pack of crayons and paper for the children.

Jacqui Jones (Design-Conscious) kicked off the idea of asking the design community on twitter to buy raffle tickets (£1 minimum) to buy a ShelterBox (which costs £590). The raffle format was chosen as so many online fundraising activities rely on auctions which means the only winner is the person with the most money. A raffle gives people the opportunity to donate what they can afford and still have a chance of winning a prize.

The first raffle (www.justgiving.com/DesignRelief) was launched on Sunday morning. By Monday afternoon enough donations had been made to buy the first box – Design Relief is now well on the way to raising enough to buy a second box. The first raffle has now closed, but another will be started on Monday 21st March.

If you check out #DesignRelief on twitter you’ll see the amount of support that’s been received – Twitter’s design community has been so supportive of the idea that Design Relief will continue fundraising as long as there are prizes to raffle.

We’d be pleased if you can support.

ACID Responds to Government’s Review of UK Intellectual Property (IP)

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Supporting ACID’s submission to the IP Review, ACID Ambassador Sebastian Conran said, “Design is an unsung hero in the UK economy. Original design leverages value, but this takes investment and it needs to be protected”. An independent review into intellectual property (IP) and growth commissioned by the Prime Minister issued a call for evidence in October 2010 on how the IP system can best support growth. Professor Ian Hargreaves, leading the review, said, “We must ensure the UK has an IP system that drives innovation and growth. This review will identify the barriers to growth and, where they exist, work out how to remove them. The review will set out short-term improvements that could be made as well as a long-term vision for the IP system”. ACID has welcomed the opportunity to respond to the UK Review into Intellectual Property and Growth to raise awareness about, in particular, the difficulties which affect the UK’s designers in accessing hands-on, practical, sector-led IP advice and information to help them maximise, protect and commercialise their IP. There is also the serious issue of the uncertainty experienced by micro firms and SME’s in effectively enforcing IP infringement.

In its comprehensive submission, ACID has used 8 case studies (out of 450+) to highlight the various IP issues affecting micro firms and SME’s within the creative industries. Another area on which ACID has concentrated is the disparity for IP rights owners. Unlike copyright infringement, if a design is stolen no criminal offence has been committed; the designer’s only recourse is under civil action. This gives rise to anomalies and inequality of treatment which are very damaging to hundreds of small businesses and designers across the UK.

Dids Macdonald, ACID’s CEO said, “I believe if design infringement becomes a criminal offence it may change and influence current board strategy in some major high street retailers to think again about condoning product piracy and using the veil of “inspiration” of the innovative products of others to create their own versions for tomorrow’s retail shelves”.

The Intellectual Property Review will report back to the Prime Minister in April 2011.

Miniview: City Park Residences, Poznan, Poland

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Each time I go to Poznan I stay in a different place. The first time, a few years ago, I was driving and stopped in a B&B on the outskirts of what is reputedly Poland’s equivalent to Birmingham.I’ve been a couple of times since, to speak to designers and hoteliers about hotel design at the Poznan Hotel Invest fair. I enjoy Poznan and the heart of the old town, the town square, is beautifully restored. I also enjoy the Poznan showgrounds not least because every time I go there is a steam train – my host was astonished when I ran away on arrival the first evening to catch this image, amongst other photographs. As is common elsewhere in Eastern Europe there is huge investment in new hotels, (see seven of the Polish hotels featured in our Review columns including Noma Residences, Westin Warsaw or Angelo Katowice). Development has been led by many individual investors, although chains such as Rezidor, Starwood and Hilton have also been very active.

This time around I stayed in the City Park Residences . This is the development of an old Polish army barracks by an individual investor. The architecture renovates, added to and refurbished the old superbly to create apartments, a small shopping mall and the ‘aparthotel’ bearing the name. I had been shown around the development on my last visit but this time I stayed and had a really good look. I always insist on staying for all Reviews as it is only the experience of staying and sleeping in an hotel that enables one to write intelligently about the design.

So why, you may ask, is this just a Miniview rather than a full Review? Although I stayed the requisite two nights I was speaking at a conference and this took me out of the hotel for much of the time, and reduced the opportunity to take the photographs I need for a full Review. In part it was disappointing because this is a very good piece of architecture, and the construction detailing was good, the quality of the interiors quite high although flawed. Without a true focus though I felt unable to write a full Review and it has been sitting at the back of my mind since, nagging me to write, so a Miniview it is.

Inspired By Design Creates Lighting Centrepiece for The Custom House

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The challenge for Inspired By Design was to create a lighting centrepiece for the £3.5m refurbishment of an historic building in Northern Ireland.

The Custom House was built in 1874 to collect tax from ships arriving at the port of Londonderry. It survived a number of bombings during the height of “The Troubles” in the 1970s and when refurbishments began in March 2010, it was little more than a shell. Plans had been drawn up for an elegant restaurant and wine bar, and it needed an imposing light feature that would dominate the entire height of the four-storey entrance hall.

Interior designer Audrey Gaffney, from Be Design, turned to lighting specialists Inspired By Design because she needed a bespoke solution, she needed it quickly, and she needed it within budget. She approached them with outline plans for a pendant chandelier that would cascade down in four tiers, to match the balustrades of the imposing new staircase.

That was in August 2010 and the restaurant was planning to open in time for Christmas, so there wasn’t much of a lead-in time. And because of the building’s history it had been “listed” to prevent developers altering its character.

Inspired By Design, based in Manchester, England, represents lighting manufacturers worldwide and was able to quickly select and finalise the right design from its huge portfolio.

The 7.5 metre high chandelier was made to their specifications in Italy, from tens of thousands of octagon-shaped glass crystals, hooked together by hand. The whole painstaking job took four weeks.

The parts were then palletised and sent by road and ferry to Northern Ireland. Local workmen were contracted to strengthen the ceiling, so it would take the 150kg weight, and they pieced it together over three days.

Inspired By Design also provided smaller custom-made pendants in a copper finish to hang in the bar and restaurant areas. The chandelier itself was illuminated by 30 colour-changing LEDs.

“It was a complex job to fit, but we overcame the problems and the end result was breathtaking,” said Simon Shuck, managing director of Inspired By Design.

“We were able to provide bespoke solution both in the design and manufacture, and ensure we met the budget. And we gave it the personal touch. We project-managed it personally from start to finish. That means making sure any problems are ironed out, at whatever stage in the process.

A worthy carpet for a Worshipful Company

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Stunning bespoke woven carpet from Wilton Carpets Commercial now graces the entrance and stairways of the Tallow Chandlers’ Livery Hall.

Delivering on-time and within budget, Wilton Carpets designed a bespoke axminster carpet that draws upon the heritage of the guild and that uses its coat of arms as a central design cue. Working closely with The Tallow Chandlers, design manager Julie Robertson captured the heritage of the Livery Company; achieving a design that complemented the relatively unchanged Grade I listed building’s interior while also providing a pleasant uplift within the heavily panelled hall and stairways.“The carpet has had a really positive impact with both our members and long-standing users commenting on how it has uplifted the ambience of the hall, creating a more inviting atmosphere”, enthuses Brigadier Roy Wilde CBE, Clerk of The Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers.

Installed by flooring contractor Spratlings Ltd over an area of 173m2 covering the entrance and six flights of stairs, the 80/20 woven axminster carpet uses a heavy yarn count that provides long-term appearance retention for these demanding locations.

“Working with Julie Robertson, we were able to plan the design to perfection enabling accurate positioning of key elements such as the coat of arms while minimising seams and wastage,” comments Bill Hawkins, Carpet Manager, Spratlings Ltd. “Being this involved at the early stage, combined with Julie’s understanding, helped us to install the carpet without difficulty and it was a pleasure to play a part in one of the City of London’s oldest interiors.”

The Tallow Chandlers’ Hall was built in 1672 after the destruction of the original hall in the Great Fire of London and is one of the few livery halls to remain unchanged since the 17th Century. Through private function rooms, the building now helps The Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers to support healthcare and educational charities through donations.

“From the moment we submitted the coat of arms to Julie Robertson for her inspiration, I was delighted with the whole process and in my nine years as Clerk of Tallow Chandlers it is rare to find a project that ran so smoothly and that makes such a difference,” continues Brigadier Roy Wilde.

“Julie’s designs immediately struck a chord, generating ideas that we simply wouldn’t have thought of while still remaining sympathetic to the interior. The samples of our two shortlisted designs also really helped committee members to visualise how the carpet would look before making their final decision, alone proving a great aid in the process. Once our verdict was made, every aspect ran incredibly smoothly and the carpet was installed on time and within budget. I would have no hesitation in recommending Wilton Carpets to any other livery company looking for outstanding service and a carpet that has a positive influence on the interior.”

    Chelsom lighting at The Savoy

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

An elegant blend of Art Deco and English Edwardian styling, the newly restored The Savoy introduces classically-inspired furnishings against a backdrop of original architectural features steeped in over 120 years of history. One of the first hotels to offer electric lighting in 1889, The Savoy now boasts an assemblage of luminaires from Chelsom that spans the spectrum from restored treasured heirlooms to sparkling bespoke feature lights which utilise the latest low energy technology.

Original brass Art Deco pendants suspended within the lobby were carefully cleaned and restored by Chelsom before being refurbished with high output 150W Halogen lamps and Emergency LEDs, to cast bright light onto the heavily corniced ceiling and subtle downlight onto the highly polished floor tiles, whilst adhering to safety regulations. Representing the grandeur of a bygone age, the pendants are a striking example of British craftsmanship at its best.

With a stunning interior scheme designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon & Reardon Smith Architects, The Savoy has undoubtedly regained its iconic status as one of the leading hotels of the world, offering the very best in traditional English hospitality.

The 268 guestrooms, offering the height of 5-star luxury, now feature an eclectic mix of table lamps, desk lights and reading lighting from the Chelsom range. Brass swing arm reading lights and Bohemian hand-cut crystal chandeliers hang from the ceilings in the traditional guestrooms providing opulent glamour and timeless elegance, whilst the Deco rooms feature 1920’s inspired nightstands and bathroom lighting and state-of-the-art LED cone head reading lights in the headboards.

Handmade silk shades were specially fabricated by Chelsom for many of the retained fittings, adding a new lease of life to the antique pieces.

After undergoing “the most ambitious hotel restoration project ever undertaken in London”, the Savoy is truly back as a statement of British heritage.

New Restaurant at Alton Towers Hotel

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Thursday 17th February marked the opening date for the new Emperor Grill at the Alton Towers Hotel. Converted from the old Conference area (adjacent to the Secret Garden restaurant and Dragon Bar), this new addition sets a new standard of dining at the resort, pushing the Secret Garden restaurant into second place and attracting those families without younger children that will enjoy a different, perhaps quieter dining experience. Checking in at the hotel you are provided with an option of booking a table for your evening meal. Opting to dine in the new restaurant, the Emperor Grill, I was expecting a cheap chain-style restaurant with tough meat, cheap furniture and with a hefty price tag for the privilege. What you are presented with is a welcome (and perhaps necessary) relief from the chain restaurants at the Theme Park. It offers something more sophisticated; drawing additional custom from those booked into the conference areas and willing to pay for quality food and drink.

Immediately obvious from the restaurant area is that the new Grill is a converted space. The Secret Garden restaurant has a prominent position within the area (doubled up for breakfast service in the morning) so understandable that it should stand out in an already heavily themed area. However, more could be done to the exterior space to make the new restaurant more apparent as the heavy-set doors, retained from the original conference suite, are kept shut to restrain noise from the children’s entertainment area beyond.

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The Royal Garden Hotel is launching a campaign that will underline the need for venues to adopt more flexible working practices for meetings and events. ‘Independent Thinking. Imaginative Results’ encompasses the hotel’s internal approach to servicing events business, something it hopes will be replicated across other UK venues.London’s leading independent five star property has recently completed a £45 million investment that has included a complete refit of the conference and banqueting product; making it one of the most sophisticated and versatile spaces in London.

“Organisers are no longer willing to accept venues that just provide standard packages and as an independent hotel we can react quickly to the demands of the most of the creative organiser,” Nixson continues. “We now have the right space, the right AV and a fantastic food & beverage offering. W Hotels Worldwide Set to Unveil Six New Distinctively Designed Hotels in 2011

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

W Hotels Worldwide will continue to showcase what’s new and next in design with the opening of six new W Hotels around the world in 2011. Design has been at the forefront of W Hotels since the opening of the David Rockwell-designed W New York, the first ever W Hotel, more than 12 years ago and has evolved with more recent hotel openings by designers such as Patricia Urquiola (W Vieques), United Design (W Doha), and Ricardo Bofill (W Barcelona), among others. As a way to further fuel innovation in design, W Hotels has also forged unique design partnerships such as its W Hotels Designers of the Future award with Design Miami/Basel. Design has always been an integral part of the W brand, said Eva Ziegler, Global Brand Leader of W Hotels Worldwide and Le Méridien. As W continues to transform into a global powerhouse, we have evolved our design approach to include contextual insights that lead to locally relevant designs bound together by Ws DNA.

On track to reach more than 50 hotels by the end of 2012, W Hotels will, this year, open:

W Taipei (February 14, 2011): GA Design International has created a nature electrified design concept that fuses the rural surroundings of Taipei with the vibrant, high voltage core of the city. W Hotels Designer of the Future winner Zigelbaum + Coelho has also been commissioned to create an interactive chandelier for the hotel.

W London – Leicester Square (February 14, 2011): Debuting as the 40th W Hotel globally, W London has been designed by renowned London architects Jestico + Whiles and Dutch interior design agency, Concrete. Veiled in translucent glass that will change color according to the time of day or happenings in the city or hotel, the 10-story hotel is sure to become the epicenter of entertainment. Interiors are based on the dual personality of the Englishman, buttoned-up by day and uninhibited and free-spirited by night.

W St. Petersburg (March 2011): With architecture by Grigoriev + Partners and interior design by Milan-based Antonio Citterio and Partners, W St. Petersburg will be located in a historic building near the lavish Winter Palace, a new place to experience the white of night. Inspired by the jewel-tones and layers of a Fabergé Egg, the hidden gem design of the hotel will reveal surprises throughout the guest experience.

W Retreat & Spa Bali – Seminyak (March 2011): For its latest Retreat experience, W Hotels has partnered with SCDA Design International and AB Concepts Hong Kong. An island marked by worship and celebration, the design of W Bali was inspired by the more than 20,000 temples that populate the Island, each with private inner courtyards and public outer courtyards that constantly conceal and reveal, introducing a new scene unseen.

W Paris – Opéra (December 2011): Located steps from the world-famous Opéra Garnier, W Paris Opéra has been designed by Rockwell Group Europe (RGe) and inspired by both the energy of New York City, Ws birthplace, and Paris as the City of Light. Sure to light up the refined district, W Paris will melt the somber traditions of the 1870s Haussman-era building in which it will be housed with a spark of modern radiance.

W Guangzhou (December 2011): With architecture by Hong Kong-based Rocco Design and interiors by renowned Yabu Pushelberg, the design of W Guangzhou, located in the citys buzzing Zhujiang district, has been inspired by the regions ancient Kesi Tapestries. Throughout the hotel, guests will find themes around unraveling, mesh work and emerging patterns.

Inspired by these unique design personalities of W Hotels around the world, W has recently launched the Global Glam collection of exclusive designer fashion and accessories. An intrinsic expression of design, W Hotels is using Fashion to communicate its global growth. This week, during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, W will launch the fourth season of the Global Glam collection, reflecting the designs of W Taipei (opening February 14, 2011), W Austin (opened December 2010) and W Mexico City (undergoing renovation).

In 2010, W Hotels had an exciting presence at key international design weeks, kicking the year off by announcing a partnership with Design Miami/Basel, the most prominent and substantive forum for international design. A Roman Apprentice

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Roman, the UK’s leading shower manufacturer and designer has been helping young people who are currently not in employment, education or training to gain work experience through work placements at their factory.Roman gave two young girls, Rachel and Stephanie a week long work placement, organised by a ground breaking work-readiness initiative run by Connexions and Esh Group.

Roman offered the girls placements within departments of their choice to give them a head start on their chosen career path. Both the girls were keen to get involved in the work placement and were excited about the opportunity.

Rachel chose to work in the Marketing Department, whilst Stephanie opted for the Finance Department. Both were given work to carry out over the week long placement, to give them a taste of what they would do if they were to continue along that particular career path.

John Wright, Operations Director at Roman organised the work placement. He commented: “We have been trying to encourage local young people to get involved with the business and gain an understanding of the opportunities a business like ours can offer. We were asked by County Durham Economic Partnership if we were interested in a training project devised by The Esh Group, Connexions and The Learning Skills Council. This seemed to be the perfect fit for what we were trying to accomplish. The girls have been really helpful throughout their time spent in marketing and finance. They are both hard working and eager to learn, so it’s great to be able to give them the opportunity to gain some hands-on experience that they can now add to their CV. It also gives them a real insight into the different aspects of the jobs they are interested in so they can see if it is the right fit for them.”

It’s Paris in the Springtime for Forbes

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Leading hotel and restaurant supplier Forbes Group has been dispatching tables, table protectors and table covers of all kinds to Paris in time for Spring 2011. Nearly one hundred Forbes Alu-Lite tables are heading to the Shangri-La, Paris. The new five star hotel was originally built in 1896 for the great-nephew of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, and has breathtaking views of Paris. The building is listed as of historic importance, so the fabric of the property is a high priority. The easily carried, lightweight aluminium tables, with the leg retention feature, made them the ideal choice for the hotel. They will be used with Forbes’ table protectors, which reduce noise levels and add comfort for clients. Protective table-coverings have also been dispatched to the Four Seasons Hotel George V in the French capital.

Refurbished and reopened last autumn, the Hotel Royal Monceau Raffles selected a wide range of fabric products from the Forbes Group. These include table skirting, conference cloth drop covers, table protectors and simple-fit table covers. Forbes Group was selected for the quality and competitive price of its British-manufactured products.

The Westin Paris-Vendôme, overlooking the Place de la Concorde, is celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2011. Alongside a renovation of its 440 guest rooms and suites, the hotel has taken delivery of over one hundred Alu-Lite tables, in round, rectangular and semi-circular shapes, for maximum flexibility of use in banquet, conference, and restaurant areas.

Half an hour from Paris, towards Disneyland, the Paxton Résidence Hôtel Spa has recently ordered 125 drop covers for its conference rooms. Tailor-made for the hotel’s tables, the drop covers have flat panels to the front and sides, with an inset panel to the corners giving a pleat effect in the drop to the floor, for a professional finish.

This success suggests that Forbes’ attendance at the Paris Equip’Hotel trade exhibition in November, and its local French office, in Châtelet-en-Brie, continue to pay dividends for the Herefordshire manufacturer. Forbes MD Peter Graville is bullish. ‘We are pleased with the results of our export efforts and expect to continue expanding sales in overseas markets’.

Hotel with Sydney’s Best Views Re-opens to Sydney’s Room Drought

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Landmark hotel The Crest, located in the heart of Kings Cross and considered to have some of Sydney’s best views, has re-opened as the Mercure Sydney Potts Point and will return a much-needed 227 rooms to Sydney’s tight room supply. The owners, Australand, have appointed Accor to manage the property after it had been closed for almost two years. The hotel’s relaunch comes at a time when Potts Point and the surrounding Kings Cross and Darlinghurst areas are undergoing a real gentrification that has brought a touch of class to their urban edginess. A high level of development in the commercial, retail and residential sectors has seen Potts Point become one of Sydney’s most vibrant communities, with more than 250 restaurants, cafes and bars within walking distance of the hotel.

The former Crest has legendary status in Sydney’s hotel scene and was recently upgraded with a $30 million refurbishment, with new furniture and fittings and a funky, modern design by Marques Interiors.

Set high on Victoria Street above Kings Cross Station, the Mercure Sydney Potts Point offers spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Sydney’s east and boasts a huge outdoor terrace and four meeting rooms for up to 300 delegates so it’s perfect for both business and leisure travellers.

Sydney has suffered a massive rooms shortage since 2000, with Accor’s Sydney hotels consistently running between 80% and 90% occupancy throughout 2010, so the addition of these quality rooms will have an enormous impact on the city’s infrastructure. The Mercure will effectively provide the first “new” rooms in Sydney since the Ibis King St Wharf opened in 2008.

Within walking distance of the Mercure are a host of attractions including great boutique shopping on Macleay St, several theatres, Tusculum, Elizabeth Bay House and more. Embarkation Park, Fitzroy Gardens and the Royal Botanic Gardens are all easily accessible on foot.

In addition to being at the heart of Sydney’s premier dining and entertainment district, the Mercure is also just a short stroll from cosmopolitan Woolloomooloo and just one train stop from Martin Place in the city centre. Bondi Beach is about 10 minutes drive away.

    Roman Showers New Valves

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Roman, one of the UK’s leading shower manufacturers and designers, is launching a brand new collection of stylish shower valves, to perfectly complement their range of enclosures, wetrooms and bath screens. The new competitively priced range presents 17 different options, incorporating concealed, semi-concealed and exposed designs, along with drench heads and multi-mode hand showers. These are available in a choice of cubist, cylindrical and oval design options and you can select from fixed, or adjustable height designs.

The Roman valve collection has been UK designed, specifically for the UK market. The designs complement the current market trends and sit comfortably with other brassware styles available for the bathroom. They utilise ceramic disc technology which ensures the valves are drip free, long life and solid – this is a reliable tried and tested technology.

The range has also been designed with ease of Installation in mind. It features fast fit plumbing connections with built in eze fix connectors and eco filters – these come as standard and don’t need to be ordered separately. These eze fix connectors reduce installation time and simplify the process, as well as making future maintenance straightforward.

All the valves in the range meet or exceed UK and European standards. The valves feature an instant cut off in the event of hot or cold water failure and safely stop at 38 degrees. The valves will regulate the temperature even if there is a drop in pressure within the system.

To further ease installation, the concealed valves offer adjustable wall mounts for different wall surfaces at different levels within the showering area. The slider rail kits are longer than the standard on the market, providing more flexibility to position the shower head at different heights – this enables an easy retro fit when replacing an old valve, ensuring no unsightly holes are left in the wall surface.

The Roman valves feature separate flow and temperature controls so they can be pre-set to a comfortable operating temperature and simply switched on and off for each use.

For those customers who are conscious of the environment the valves come complete with flow regulators so the flow can be restricted to a more economical rate. They regulate the water flow to around 8 litres per minute on the drench head versions and 6 litres per minute on the hand held showers.

Julian Pearson, Commercial Director at Roman, commented: “We are very pleased with our new collection of shower valves and have already received excellent feedback from those customers who have had a sneak preview. They are just the product to complete the contemporary and luxurious showering experience you would expect from Roman. With the variety of design options, there is something for every bathroom. They have been carefully designed to complement current bathroom trends, with a blend of curvaceous and square designs. With every valve purchase, you also have the peace of mind that they are back by a highly trained customer service team who can help at any stage throughout the purchase process, whether its advice before purchase, during the installation process or in an after sales capacity.”

    Midlands hat-trick for Liverpool architects

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

An architectural practice from Liverpool is increasing its profile in the Midlands after winning three major contracts that will help transform the face of Britain’s biggest provincial city. Two of the tasks involve facelifts for two vacant 1960s buildings that for some years have blighted the city centre. And the crowning glory is creating a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill on the 25th floor of the brand-new building, The Cube. The restaurant forms part of a £10m hotel and luxury health spa.

The biggest project of the three involves a £30m investment to transform Birmingham’s Cumberland House in city centre Broad Street into a 285-bed hotel.

Built as a speculative office tower in the 1960s it was for some time used as council offices before being vacated seven years ago.

The building is being given a new facia and a complete internal refit and will open in the summer of 2012 as a new Hampton by Hilton Hotel. The client is Birmingham-based developers, Office Villages Ltd, with contractors, Stockport-based Multibuild, already on site.

The development is taking advantage of a government scheme, known as BPRA, or Business Premises Renovation Allowance. It provides the incentive of tax breaks for the conversion of tired, vacant buildings. The incentive scheme makes the project viable, according to Adam Hall, Managing Director of Falconer Chester Hall(Architects).

BPRA is also being used in the planned conversion of another Birmingham city centre building, Snow Hill Plaza. Standing at the corner of Snow Hill and St Chads. The scheme will see the creation of a 224-bedroom Holiday Inn Express, with a new-build conference and banqueting suite added to the refurbished Snow Hill Plaza.

The practise is also creating a stunning Indigo Hotel on the top three floors of the iconic world-class Cube, a new building close to New Street Station and the Mailbox Building. This architectural practice is also working on a health spa in the basement of the The Cube, and the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill on the 25th floor.

The Snow Hill scheme is a development by Sanguine Hospitality and Bruntwood, whilst the hotel, restaurant and health spa at The Cube is a Sanguine Hospitality development. Sanguine will also be operating the Hampton by Hilton hotel at the Broad Street development.

    Wandsworth cuddles Jung lover

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The oldest family owned manufacturer in the UK, Wandsworth Group has announced a distribution deal with one of the oldest German family owned manufacturers, electrical company Jung. The trade partnership extends the distribution network for Jung into the UK whilst Harald Jung, the grandson of the German company’s founder, expressed his delight in having the ability to distribute Wandsworths ‘retro’ fittings through their extensive distribution system. The disparity in size between the two companies is marked, with Jung’s turnover being 10 times that of the UK company. This can partly be explained by the difference in electrical specifications between the continental systems and the idiosyncratic system of the UK. Also Jung have developed the electronic control systems that are now de rigueur for electrical installations. The adoption of their products by Wandsworth opens the possibility of finally designers being able to suite all the switches within an hotel room.

As Gary Stevens, Sales & Marketing Director at Wandsworth explains “By joining forces with Jung, we instantly open up our existing range, at the same time, we’re also adding wiring accessories and door entry systems that match our existing range for quality but complement it in terms of design, enabling us to offer customers even greater choice.”

Comments Export Manager Wolfgang Becker of Jung: “We have never sold through distributors in the UK because our products are for the niche market where design and quality matter, not just the cheapest option. In Wandsworth we have found a partner that we can trust to deliver those values in the UK marketplace and a one that has the resources to drive understanding and uptake of our products in the UK. In the coming months we will also be introducing Wandsworth to the workings of the KNX building controls protocol. The protocol is now 20 years old and the UK remains around 12 years behind key economic competitors in Europe in terms of installations, which means that many commercial and public buildings are missing out on the wow factor and energy savings that KNX can offer.”

For hotel designers who have long recognised the quality of the slim plates and stylish finishes in the Wandsworth range the possibility that these will be extended to include a full range of electronic controls within a family of plates can only be a mouth-watering prospect

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Following the new ownership of Petit St Vincent, a small private island located in the island nation of St. Vincent in the Grenadines, upgrade plans have now been finalised and will shortly be under way. Having spent time on PSV with their families over the past month, new owners Robin Paterson and Phil Stephenson have used their experience on the island and feedback from staff and customers to devise a customised renovation plan for the resort.

At the heart of the renovation is the promise to keep the ‘fundamental nature’ of PSV. It’s natural beauty, peace and quiet, privacy and discretion and friendly, non-intrusive service will not change and PSV will continue to be a privately owned hide away.

    The Renovation Programme:

    ● PSV will not close between May to November 2011 as originally planned. Instead the resort will only close as usual in September and October.

    ● Renovations to the resort will include:

    – A casual, a la carte restaurant on the beach to be open from 11-5pm daily serving light lunches, snacks and cocktails.
    – An air –conditioned fitness and yoga centre
    – An open air spa
    – An air conditioned library with TV, DVD and Internet for all guests to enjoy at leisure

    – Landscaping that preserves the natural, wild beauty of the island whilst adding more colourful flowering plans and lights at night.
    – New activities desk where guests are given the opportunity to take part in various sports and programmes, from hiking, water sports and tennis to sailing, art classes and wine tasting.

Overall, it is Robin and Phil’s aim to ‘create and enduring place of beauty and harmony away from the crowds and noise of modern civilization, and built on the mutual respect already apparent between those who inhabit the island for whatever period of time they choose to visit’.

    ITB Forecast on China tourism

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

International tourism enters a new age
China is on its way to becoming the travel industry’s dominant world power – ranging from groups to individual tours – big challenges lie ahead for job training in the tourism industry

Over the next two decades the makeup of tourism around the world will change significantly. Speaking at the 18th World Travel Monitor Forum in Pisa, Professor Haivan Song of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University said: “By 2030 China will be the world’s most popular tourism destination.” In addition, he added, during the next 20 years China would replace Germany as the world’s most travelled nation. Professor Haivan Song lectures at the world’s second largest university teaching travel and hospitality courses. “When visa regulations for citizens from the People’s Republic of China eventually change, tourists from China can be expected to vastly outnumber those from any other country.“ Launched by the consultancy IPK International and sponsored by ITB Berlin, every year at the World Travel Monitor Forum in Pisa 50 tourism experts and scientists from around the world present current statistics and the latest trends in international tourism.

According to Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s forecasts, in five years time arrivals in China will have already risen from 150 to 185 million. “At the current rate, China will be an economic power equal to Europe and the US combined. China’s role in international tourism will be similar“, said Haivan Song. Relaxing visa regulations will also significantly affect the makeup of tourism out of China. “When these barriers fall Chinese citizens will also undertake tours on their own“, he added. According to the German National Tourism Board, from January to August 2010 the number of overnights by Chinese citizens in Germany alone rose to 652,459, a year-on-year increase of 28 per cent.

According to Professor Haivan Song, the travel boom forecast for China over the next two decades means the country faces huge challenges. “A massive effort will be needed in China to train people for jobs in the travel and hotel industry“, he said.

“The forecasts for the future of tourism from Asia and in particular from China are very good news for Germany as a tourism destination“, said Dr. Martin Buck, Director, CompetenceCenter Travel and Logistics, Messe Berlin. “By launching ITB Asia, an annual event, in Singapore we have prepared the ground in order to meet the needs of the growing Asian market.“

    Wilderness becomes a ‘brand house’

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

My first visit to a truly African hotel was , I suppose to Bushmans Kloof in 2008. Truly African in that it was not urban and was focussed on generating a wildlife experience for the guest. The owners, the Tollman family invest money from their European Red Carnation Group in various wildlife trusts and it was from them I found out about Wilderness. There are plenty of urban hotels in Africa that are setting standards and providing a level of service and environment that is competitive with the best of Europe or the Americas. When I talk about African hotels though, in this context I mean those operators who mix hotel operation with a true engagement with Africa’s landscape and wildlife.

That this impacts design is undoubted and I have tried to show this through my reviews of Little Kulala, Damaraland and Ongava. The trends shown in these hotels run through their 65 lodge operations, the latest two of which are totally solar powered, probably a first for any hotel operator.

Now Wilderness, who fund charities and development programmes for small communities (see Wilderness Trust) have arrived at a more coherent branding for the various activities they undertake.

The first step in this in-depth process was the rebranding of Safari Adventure Company as Wilderness Adventures late last year. Wilderness Adventures now joins Wilderness Safaris as the two camp-operating brands in the group, with clear market differentiation.

Clarifying market niches even further has resulted in the independence of the mobile safari operating brand, Wilderness Explorations. The new separate identity of this brand that represents the original roots of the group is expected to allow it to reach its full potential.

The logical next step, based on the ‘family’ concept, has been to rebrand Sefofane Air Charters to become
    Wilderness Air.

Wilderness Adventures and Wilderness Safaris are already branded and reorganised with releases to the market complete. Wilderness Air and Wilderness Explorations have now begun the process of replacing livery on aircraft and vehicles, changing uniforms and other collateral. As they work through this phase guests and travel partners will start to see an increasing use of the new branding and logos.

Wilderness CEO Andy Payne described the process as, “essentially moving from what we called ‘a house of brands’ to a ‘branded house’; in other words, a way of showing the inherent connections between all members of the Wilderness family while celebrating their differences.”

Average daily rate rose 2.3 percent using constant dollars,• At year-end, the company’s worldwide pipeline of hotels under construction, awaiting conversion or approved for development totaled nearly 105,000 rooms, including nearly 45,000 rooms outside North America. The pipeline includes AC Hotels by Marriott, a new brand with over 9,000 rooms expected at launch in 2011,

    • Over 8,500 rooms opened during the quarter, including over 1,800 rooms converted from competitor brands and 2,100 rooms in international markets.

BETHESDA, MD – February 14, 2011 – Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR), in addition to reporting its fourth quarter and full year 2010 results today, announced a plan to split the company’s businesses into two separate, publicly traded companies. Marriott International expects to spin off its timeshare operations and development business as a new independent company through a special tax-free dividend to Marriott International shareholders in late 2011.

    DETAILS OF THE TRANSACTION
Under the plan, the new company will focus on the timeshare business as the exclusive developer and operator of timeshare, fractional and related products under the Marriott brand and the exclusive developer of fractional and related products under the Ritz-Carlton brand. After the split, Marriott International will concentrate on the lodging management and franchise business. Marriott will also receive franchise fees from the timeshare company’s use of the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton brands.

Marriott International chairman and chief executive officer, J.W. Marriott, Jr., said, “Marriott took a bold step when we introduced our Marriott brand to the timeshare industry in 1984. In this transaction, we take another innovative step forward as we combine the power of the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton brands with the flexibility and focus of a new independent timeshare company.

“The transaction will permit both companies to tailor their business strategies to best address market opportunities in their respective industries. The new timeshare company will be positioned to expand faster over time while Marriott International will further advance its longstanding strategy of separating real estate from management and franchise operations. With two public companies, shareholders will be able to pursue investment goals in either or both companies rather than one combined organization.

“Marriott Vacation Club owners and guests and The Ritz-Carlton Destination Club members should see no change in the branding or quality of their properties, services, usage options, use of Marriott Rewards points, or access to Marriott International’s hotels. The companies will continue to work together to provide outstanding vacation experiences, similar to the relationship between Marriott International and the franchisees of its hotel properties. After the split, both companies will remain dedicated to the highest standards of quality and value and the brand promise for which Marriott and Ritz-Carlton are well known and widely respected.

“Day-to-day operations at both companies should not be affected by this transaction. During the past few years, our company has brought staffing levels and expenses in line with operating conditions across our businesses. While we will continue to improve efficiency where possible, we do not expect this transaction to result in work force reductions. Associates should continue to have attractive career opportunities due to the growth prospects of both companies,” added Mr. Marriott.

As two separate public companies, both Marriott International and the new company will have separate boards of directors. J.W. Marriott, Jr. will remain chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Marriott International. Stephen P. Weisz, president of Marriott’s timeshare business since 1997 and a 39-year Marriott veteran, will become chief executive officer of the new company. William J. Shaw, who recently announced his retirement as vice chairman of the company at Marriott International and also resigned from its board, will become chairman of the board of the new timeshare company and Deborah Marriott Harrison, senior vice president of government affairs for Marriott International, will serve as a board member.

Mr. Weisz said, “Our new company will be independent and the largest pure-play timeshare firm in the world. We will be publicly-held and financially sound with significant growth opportunities including meaningful upside as the economic recovery proceeds. We believe our outstanding brands, unparalleled operating skill, prime resort locations and world-class sales expertise will continue to provide us with a significant competitive advantage.

“With the launch of the Marriott Vacation Club Destinations timeshare program, our points-based product, in 2010, we are confident in our ability to fulfill the dreams and meet the growing expectations of our customers. We expect to continue to create value for shareholders through a diverse stream of income, including development, management and financing. We dramatically improved our cost structure and efficiency in the last two years and are well-positioned for the upturn. And with over $1.5 billion in timeshare segment inventory at year-end 2010, our near term investment needs are modest. All in all, we expect to generate meaningful cash from operations in the next few years. I am enormously excited by this new opportunity for our business and our associates.”

In 2010, Marriott International’s timeshare segment reported revenue of approximately $1.5 billion (unadjusted for specific terms of the transaction). At year-end 2010, Marriott International’s timeshare segment operated 71 timeshare and fractional resorts with more than 400,000 owners and approximately 10,000 employees.

After the special dividend, the Marriott family is expected to hold approximately 21 percent of the outstanding common stock of each company.

Marriott International will continue to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange and expects that the new timeshare company will also be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The new timeshare company does not expect to pay a quarterly cash dividend or be investment grade in the near term. Marriott International does not expect to change its quarterly cash dividend as a result of this transaction.

Marriott will disclose more details about the respective pro forma balance sheets and pro forma income statements of the two companies when the new timeshare company files a Form 10 registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which it expects to occur sometime in the second quarter of 2011. The transaction is subject to the receipt of normal and customary regulatory approvals, the execution of inter-company agreements, receipt of a favorable ruling from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), arrangement of adequate financing facilities, final approval by Marriott International’s board of directors, and other related matters. The transaction will not require shareholder approval and will have no impact on Marriott’s contractual obligations to the existing securitizations. Subject to the completion of this ongoing work and the receipt of regulatory approvals, the spin-off should be completed before year-end 2011.
