    Legal & General Kick Starts Development at Coliseum Leisure Park with Pre-Let Secured To Travelodge

    Legal & General Property (“LGP”) has recently announced, on behalf of its Leisure Fund (“the Fund”), that it has secured a pre-let to Travelodge on its development site at Coliseum Leisure Park, Cheshire Oaks, enabling it to kick start its plans to build a 77-bed hotel based above two restaurant units.The development, which is scheduled to start onsite in September 2011 and complete at the beginning of the summer 2012, will comprise a four-storey hotel, arranged above an 800 sq ft hotel lobby and 7,000 sq ft of ground floor restaurant space. The hotel has been pre-let to Travelodge on a 25 year lease. The restaurant space will be divided into two A3 units, comprising 3,000 sq ft and 4,000 sq ft, respectively and will be marketed once work starts on site.

    In line with the Company’s ongoing efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment, LGP is targeting a BREEAM “Excellent” Rating for the development, which, if achieved, would make it the first Travelodge in the UK to receive such an accolade. Furthermore, 10% of the predicted energy requirements of the scheme will be utilising renewable energy sources.

    The new development is located adjacent to the Prezzo restaurant unit on a cleared ¼ acre site within Coliseum Leisure Park. Existing operators at the scheme include a 16-screen Vue Cinema, which is one of the most successful cinemas in the country, and a recently opened Miller & Carter Steakhouse, which is owned by leading restaurant and pub operator, Mitchells and Butlers, and was the first of its kind to be placed on an out-of-town scheme.

    LGP is also in talks with a number of other exciting restaurant operators who are looking to secure representation on the scheme. Located in Cheshire Oaks, the park benefits from excellent transport links, which include easy access to the M53 and close proximity to Ellesmere Port railway station.

    The deal signifies further growth of LGP’s Leisure Fund, which already has circa £230 million of assets under management (as at March 2011). Currently rated the fifth highest performing fund within the IPD specialist pooled property funds index, the Fund has consistently delivered top quartile performance over one, three and five years since launch against the IPD Pooled Property Fund Index and outperformed the IPD Leisure Fund benchmark to December 2010 by 1.6% pa over three years and 1.2% pa over five years (ungeared).

    Commenting on the letting, Andrew Ferguson, Fund Manager to LGP’s Leisure Fund, said: “This letting demonstrates LGP’s ability to source and attract high quality tenants and also reflects our ongoing belief that there is significant value to be found in the leisure sector, which continues to offer long leases off sensible base rents, providing an attractive alternative to some of the more traditional investment sectors.

    “We are extremely pleased to have secured Travelodge as a tenant at Coliseum Leisure Park and believe that its presence will not only complement the existing tenant line-up, but significantly enhance the diversity of the offering at the park.”

It will be an ideal base for visitors to the North West and the facilities at the Park and Cheshire Oaks will mean our customers have a wide choice of places to relax, eat, drink and shop.

    “This is one of several Travelodge developments currently being undertaken by the major UK pension funds and again demonstrates the attractiveness of Travelodge’s covenant and lease structure.“

    Enhancing the guest experience

    Located in the heart of Llanelli, the Stradey Park Hotel is renowned for its first-class, warm and welcoming service.     Lighting Technology Projects (LTP) and Vaughan Sound Installations (part of the PAI Group of companies) were invited to provide modern, effective and efficient lighting and sound systems within the hotel’s restaurant, various bars, reception area and function suites.

    Technical Solutions
    To accentuate the 12 cut-glass chandeliers within the main function room, The Alexander Suite, LTP designed and installed an energy-efficient LED-based colour changing facility. Housing a dance floor and a stage, with the capability of holding up to 400 guests, the digitally dimmable lighting and special effects, as well as the state-of-the-art sound system enhanced the space, enabling visitors to change the settings to suit their event’s needs.
    Vaughan Sound also equipped the suite with an audio video system including screens, projectors and WiFi, to ensure it was multi-functional and suitable for conferences and corporate occasions.

    The hotel’s Bryn-Y-Mor Suite, Samphires Restaurant, and Rooftop Lounge all benefitted from mood lighting, with the first obtaining a video projector and the latter two receiving brand new sound systems too.

    Additionally, to allow in-house advertising and the promotion of upcoming events, a media system was established within the reception area.

    Outcome
    Together, Lighting Technology Projects and Vaughan Sound Installations successfully provided the Stradey Park Hotel with the contemporary and modern atmosphere they desired. The impressive LED mood lighting, along with the AV system have enabled the venue to become adaptable and appropriate for a range of occasions.

    Hilton Hotels & Resorts Opens Second Hotel in New Delhi – Hilton New Delhi-Noida-Mayur Vihar

    Hilton Hotels & Resorts has announced the opening of its full-service, upscale Hilton New Delhi-Noida-Mayur Vihar under a management agreement with Eros Resorts & Hotels Ltd. Located just off the DND Flyway, Hilton New Delhi-Noida-Mayur Vihar is a 20-minute drive from the commercial hub in NOIDA, a prime destination for information and software technology and IT-enabled services. The 168-room newly-built hotel is equipped with up-to-date technology and a complete array of amenities and guest services. It features two restaurants and a lobby lounge and bar.     The hotel market in Cardiff has boomed. Most of the major chains are now present, and the City has bloomed under devolved government, tourism developing as the waterfront and other developments have increased its attractiveness. The city always had an impressive city centre. The civic government offices are amongst the most beautiful in Europe. The location of the Hilton makes it almost a part of the Civic Centre area and it is a natural choice for guests linked to Welsh national events, as we saw on this second visit. The Argentinean rugby team was headquartered in the Hotel, making full use of its health club and spa (as OH observed though, looking too small physically to be a threat to the Welsh team).

    Some of the effects of developments in the town have been negative for hotels – for example, the arrival of restaurant chains such as Jamie Oliver’s ‘Jamie’s Italian’. This has raised the level of competition for the food spend, and numerous bars and restaurants provide guests with an alternative eating and drinking experience wider than that which was available in the early years of this century. Combined with an economic downturn, as marked here as anywhere else, competition is intensifying.

    On my last visit, I commented on the excellence of the maintenance programme. The owners have completed a soft refurbishment and the entrance areas have been redesigned and refurbished. I met with the hotel and heard about their forthcoming major refurbishment plans.

    Hilton Cardiff, Wales
    There are wrinkled brows as to how the hotel is to compete within the food and drink market in Cardiff. As the doorman pointed out to me, the rate of new openings was such that the same market was being pulled from one new venue to another. I have seen this phenomenon before, strangely, in Carlisle in Cumbria. There a pub refurbishment could guarantee the pub an enthusiastic crowd until a competitor refurbished, at which point the crowd would move to the renewed venue. This seems to be beginning to happen in Cardiff, with the followers of fashion providing the audience. Whilst the main restaurant food offering in the hotel is of a high standard, and the superb location opposite Cardiff Castle and adjacent to the Civic Centre makes competing for evening and lunchtime business easier, attracting the lunch time and passing tourist trade into an hotel to eat is difficult.
    The opening up of the bar to the reception area has provided a much more welcoming entrance area for the hotel. It appears to be successful as a social area in the hotel, and as a meeting zone, but the secondary restaurant is now restricted in its opening times. Whilst the bar and main restaurant have high visibility, the secondary restaurant, the Steam Bar, suffers from a low street presence along with a low visibility within the hotel.

    Hilton’s policy on Wi-Fi access allows free access through BT Hotspots in the public areas, but this is a poor service as the free bit is largely limited to BT customers. When competing coffee shops offer a fast free service this again puts the hotel at a competitive disadvantage unless the guest is in a business room, where the Wi-Fi is free and use of the business lounge allows access to the same free Wi-Fi system.

    The use of hotel lobby and dining services for informal business meetings is increasingly determined by the diner being able to use the tablet or laptop computer to access the web whilst in a luncheon meeting. Equally, the use of hotel public areas for informal business meetings requires a similar open access system for success. BT’s system falls short for people who are not already BT subscribers.

    The hotel is well maintained and housekeeping is of a high standard. A soft refurb of fabrics and carpet has kept the bedroom areas looking contemporary, and they are competitive with other hotels. The rooms are large and the original design by KCA has been long lived. The bathrooms, which in my initial Review I considered a little less than luxurious despite their size are now the focus for the next upgrade programme, complicated by the fact that the large showers are not on the main service duct. Having the main plumbing services coming through the service duct to the bedroom makes not only maintenance easier but simplifies upgrades. Here the large curved shower walls contain the plumbing for the showers, making upgrade that bit more difficult without major works.

    Hilton’s approach to design management appears strange to me, as they do not maintain relationships with their design practices. The original designer was Khuan Chew of KCA, a leading interior design practitioner, famous for her work on the Burj Al Arab, Dubai’s famous ‘sail’ hotel. Hilton have not maintained a relationship with the practice apparently (I was told) because Khuan Chew did not do all the presentations herself. Expecting the head of a practice to do all the presentations seems to be a common client perception and I wonder whether Mr Foster, Mr Gehry or Mr Piano are expected to do all their presentations themselves?

    It is not surprising that there is inconsistency, indeed incoherence, in design management at the major brands. At Marriott, for example, the bathrooms in the Renaissance Paddington are no match for those in the Marriott West Quay – why the variation? Why the apparent lack of trust Hilton place in their design list, epitomised by their failure to develop superb concepts such as that of the Hilton Diagonal Mar or Chicago’s Doubletree, the Wit into lifestyle brands instead of poaching ideas from other companies. At least at Hilton one cannot question the operational standards, and Cardiff demonstrates why they are such a consistent performer in the business market. The food is good, the interiors work well and the staff is well trained and efficient. As a first stage in bedroom refurbishment a major ‘presidential’ suite has been created (see the video).

    The hotel does not attempt to be a boutique, and those looking for a boutique sense of funky style may be better staying at the Big Sleep down the road, but there is undoubted high quality here. There is an excellent small spa along with a Living Well gym operation and a swimming pool. It may be that the future for the Steam Bar is to become a part of the hotels pampering operation rather than trying to compete with the other food operations, or maybe it could become an adjunct to the already popular business services, oriented around serving the informal meeting market more formally. Perhaps a relationship over years with a designer who grew to know Cardiff and its market might have helped the hotel to judge how to balance its offering in the local market better, although with very high occupancy rates the marketing team and the owner have obviously positioned their hotel standards in the right place.

    In difficult economic conditions Hilton seem to me to be getting their offerings pitched at the right level. As I will show further with the forthcoming Review of Hilton Liverpool, the chain is pitching as a very good four star, with business rooms offering enough to be almost five star in scale and nature of the offering to the guest. The group may be regarded by many designers as very ‘middle of the road’ but their operational standards and criteria seem to me to be right on the ball. If their design managers were equally able to exploit the quality many of their designers demonstrate, then the brand could not just be a leading business brand, but also lead the way in the lifestyle market.

    Cardiff, with its upcoming refurbishment programme, could potentially become a test-bed. The rooms are large. The franchisee cares enough to be that rare owner who refurbishes and maintains the property in an exemplary manner. The operational team is experienced and eager. Perhaps, drawing on the Wit experience, the new design management team at Hilton will be bold enough to step once more towards creating a leading lifestyle brand experience.

    Dernier & Hamlyn’s work recreates history at Theatre Royal Newcastle

    Using archive photography to develop accurate recreations of the light fittings that were installed at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle in the early 20th Century, Dernier & Hamlyn recently recreated a sunburner for the auditorium of the Theatre Royal in Newcastle. Retaining all the beauty of the original fitting, whilst taking advantage of the latest lighting technology, the sunburner was manufactured at Dernier & Hamlyn’s South London factory alongside a further 150 fittings for the theatre. Dernier & Hamlyn’s work included ceiling lights in the main auditorium made in cast brass and featuring leaf patterns as well as fifty wall lights for the main foyer and staircase and chandeliers that have been fitted throughout the building formed using cast brass and handblown glass.The original sunburner was installed in 1901 at the Theatre Royal as part of celebrated theatre architect Frank Matcham’s classic Edwardian design, and used gas lighting. The magnificent new light uses a combination of fibre optics and colour-changeable LED’s that can be altered to suit the required mood. In addition, the ceramic bowls that sat above the gaslights have been replaced by white sprayed metal castings to reduce the weight of the fitting and its cost, both important factors for public buildings today.

    Dernier & Hamlyn worked in partnership on this project with historic theatre consultants TheatreSearch and used archive photography of the original fittings to recreate both the sunburner and other decorative lighting throughout the theatre.

    Chedi Muscat Unveils Region’s Most Highly Anticipated Spa and Fitness Venue

    The Chedi Muscat is heightening Oman’s appeal as a healthy holiday destination with the grand opening of a state-of-the-art, 2,500-square-metre spa and fitness facility that promises guests and members the chance to buff up and bliss out in style by the shores of the Gulf of Oman. Upon its debut next week, The Spa at The Chedi Muscat will be the largest facility of its kind in the capital port city, boasting the longest outdoor pool in the Sultanate of Oman.

    As a wellness facility with a starring role in the resort, the opening also marks a first for the resort’s operators, Singapore-based GHM (General Hotel Management).

    IP Minister Issues Invitation for Designers to Be Involved With Future Intellectual Property Design

    ACID (Anti Copying In Design) welcomes an open invitation to the UK design sector from Baroness Wilcox, Minister for Intellectual Property, to shape future IP Design Policy, at an event held at the Design Council to encourage initial debate on what makes the design industry tick. Baroness Wilcox said, “I urge the business community to participate in this call for evidence and help shape the future of design in the UK.” This could not come at a more timely moment following Professor Hargreaves recommendations that this sector of the creative industries had been neglected in the past. Baroness Wilcox also stated that, “Investment in design in the UK contributed £33 billion or 2.4% of the UK’s GDP in 2008.” Dids Macdonald, CEO of ACID, a panellist at the event said, “This is a very encouraging start, but it will only be effective if the whole design sector is prepared to contribute with real evidence and case studies, to highlight some of the challenges facing design through IP infringement – and Government then listens and acts. This is a huge opportunity for designers to speak out about their IP issues!”

    Macdonald continued, “Innovation happens irrespective of IP rights but designers should demand a robust IP framework from which to achieve growth through ROI, reinforced by a realistic, cost and time effective legal framework to address infringement, with appropriate exemplary damages. Without this, growth will be eroded and jobs threatened. This, alone, would go a long way to discourage those who take the fast track to market by free riding on the back of the UK’s designers who are, undoubtedly, some of the best in the world.”

    Design rights are complex. The majority of the UK’s 232,000 designers do not rely on registered rights and have less than 4 employees. Therefore, it can be too expensive to take legal action, not to mention the debilitating negative effects which make running a small design led business almost impossible in the face of the uncertainty of potential infringement. More importantly, Britain’s designers do not have the significant benefit that European counterparts have in being able to rely on unfair competition law.

    ACID will be working closely and positively alongside the UKIPO to ensure that design’s voice is heard loudly and clearly with the creation of sound policy and tangible actions to support this important part of the economy.

    The IPO announced the following statement on 21st September.

    The Government has today issued a ‘call for evidence’ in relation to the design sector and launched a supporting online questionnaire/survey aimed at business.

    Baroness Wilcox announced the publication of the first phase of research into the use of design rights in the UK. The research shows that the most intensive spenders on design in the UK are business services, manufacturing and construction sectors. Relative to other countries in Europe the UK spends significantly on design related products and services; but there is very low awareness of design rights. The research also found that registered design rights are used mainly in specific business sectors, such as furniture and clothing.

    IHG Further Taps into Macao’s Mid-Scale Hotel Market By Opening New Holiday Inn in Early 2012

    IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) recently signed a 1,224 room Holiday Inn franchise contract with Sands China Ltd. (Sands China), a majority-held subsidiary of global resort developer, Las Vegas Sands Corp (LVS), on Cotai Strip in Macao, known as “Asia’s Las Vegas”.When built, Holiday Inn Macao Cotai Strip will be the world’s largest Holiday Inn. The hotel will be in the heart of the bustling Cotai Strip and part of Sands China’s newest integrated resort – Sands Cotai Central. Scheduled to open in early 2012, this spectacular resort will include the second largest building in the world and the full resort will offer 6,000 additional hotel rooms to the area, along with a wide variety of gaming, dining, retail, entertainment and meeting facilities.

    Cotai is a newly reclaimed area linking Coloane and Taipa islands in Macao.     “Stunning” Rothschild Foundation Takes Wood Awards 2011 Gold Award

    The Rothschild Foundation in Buckinghamshire stole the show and the top award in this year’s hotly contested Wood Awards 2011 competition. The ceremony was held on the 27th September, the first day of new exhibition Timber Expo at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Stephen Marshall Architects saw off competition of an exceptionally high standard to win the Structural category, before being crowned the winner of winners in front of nearly 250 leading industry and architectural figures. As the UK’s premier architecture and furniture awards programme for excellence in wood, the Wood Awards recognises innovative design and craftsmanship in the world’s most natural material.The Rothschild Foundation has this year already won a RIBA Award 2011 and was mid-listed for the 2011 Stirling Prize. Michael Morrison of Purcell Miller Tritton and chairman of the judges, praised the new archive and offices for charity investment organisation The Alice Trust, saying “The Rothschild Foundation is a wonderful piece of modernism married to a Victorian farm in the depths of the English countryside. The standard of work is a testament to the care and professionalism of everyone associated with the project. It is truly stunning.” The construction of the buildings in timber was inspired by the former use of the site as a farm populated by timber barns with vertical boarding and roof trusses. The main space in the scheme, the archive reading room, was designed as a modern reinterpretation of a barn structure, with a consummately detailed European oak gridshell roof supported on triangular struts.

    Other winners for 2011 included Brockholes Visitor Centre in Lancashire by Adam Khan Architects for the Commercial & Public Access Award, Strange House in London by Hugh Strange Architects for the Private / Best Small Project Award, and Diamond Hall at the University of Ulster in Co. Antrim by Samuel Stevenson & Sons won the Conservation/Restoration Award. ‘Windsor Rocker’ gave Katie Walker Furniture their second* Furniture Award win, and in acknowledgement of this year’s impressive Furniture shortlist, furniture went on to take two of the Special Awards, with Outstanding Design going to Sebastian Cox’s ‘Suent Superlight Chair’ using coppiced hazel, and Outstanding Craftsmanship being awarded to ‘The Manolo Lounger’ in American black walnut by John Galvin Design. The Innovation Award went to Atmos Studio for 081-23MR – Stairs, which the judges called “a beautifully designed piece of 3D joinery…fluid and dynamic. A tour de force.”

    Focus SB exhibiting at the Sleep Event

    (Stand V7) Focus SB will be showcasing its entire range of electrical accessories at The Sleep Event exhibition, which is being held at the Business Design Centre in Islington on November 23rd and 24th.Of particular interest to those visiting the specialist hotel event will be the bedroom multi-service plates and card switches that Focus SB is able to manufacture in any quantity to customers specific requirements.

    Also on the stand will be its New Sheraton, New Lincoln and Deckle Edge ranges.

    All plates are manufactured to the highest standards at the Hastings manufacturing headquarters using either Crabtree or Wandsworth inserts. Roger explains: “These ranges offer a comprehensive selection of products to suit most application requirements.”

    Drayton Manor Hotel – the architect’s view

    Architect John Pass fondly remembers his childhood trips to Drayton Manor Theme Park, near Tamworth, Staffordshire, in the 1950s. Today, 50 years later, Mr Pass visits the park to admire the £20m, 150-room Drayton Manor Hotel, which he designed.Mr Pass, who grew up in Whittington, just six miles from the park, is due to retire next year and the Drayton Manor Hotel, which opened on Monday 15th August, is his final project.

    Mr Pass’ practice, John Pass Associates, based in Warwick, was originally briefed about the hotel in 1998 and he has devoted much of the past 13 years on this development.

    At the time, the plan was to build an 86-bedroom hotel with a leisure centre.The design team had to overcome sensitive issues concerning the proposed hotel site being on Green Belt land. In addition, many of the trees in the area had been planted 300 years agoby the Peel family, the previous landowners. The Bryan family, who own Drayton Manor Theme Park, also planted a number of trees since purchasing the land in 1949. As such there were a number of Tree Preservation Orders in place.

    Lichfield District Council approved original planning application in 2003. But, due to the land being Green Belt, the Department of the Environment called in the application and a Full Planning Inquiry was undertaken. In 2003, the inquiry granted planning permission with many conditions, some of which related to the height of the Hotel, building materials, protection of the trees and fauna and flora.

    But, the hotel did not go forward as a definite project until 2005 when a further evaluation was made of the accommodation within the original 2003 design. Due to the change in market conditions and commercial viability, the design had to be amended in order to provide 150 bedrooms.

    Dernier & Hamlyn spreads the love at Decorex

    Working with Interior Designers Martin Hulbert Designs Dernier & Hamlyn has manufactured a fantastic light fitting for the International Champagne Bar at Decorex 2011.In line with the “Love Design” theme of this year’s show, the fitting’s white metal frame comprises four letters LOVE and features 188 Waterford champagne flutes that fit around the letters with LED lights underneath.

    “It was very exciting to be asked to work on this project that will be seen by all the major players in interior design. I have worked with Dernier & Hamlyn on many projects including Coworth Park, The Grove and The Dorchester and I am delighted with what we have produced together.”

    Miniview: Premier Inn Stratford

    In an acquisition which has possibly created a few green-eyed monsters in the budget hotel market, Premier Inn is poised for high occupancy levels as East London gears up for the Olympics in 2012.Adjacent to the East London stadium and perched above the newly constructed Westfield Shopping Centre sits the new Premier Inn Stratford – a 267 bedroom hotel with onsite restaurant and spectacular views across a developing Olympic site.

    the Blarney Castle Hotel

    Blarney Castle sits in a park. Outside its gate is the village green around which sits the village of Blarney, a tourist trap since the 19th century. The Blarney Stone is on the castle battlements and local legend has it that if you kiss the stone your subsequent eloquence could tell a man to go to hell in such a way that he would enjoy the journey. The stone is said to be the Lia Fáil—a magical stone upon which Irish kings were crowned. The Blarney woollen mill is now a retail experience but the village pattern remains largely unchanged and one of the most important elements is the local pub/hotel, the Blarney Castle Hotel, that faces onto the village green. Grandly named this is a classic Victorian village pub dating from 1837.

    Sensibly the old public bar, known as Johnny’s Bar has not been over refurbished, retaining much of the original flooring appearance and ambience. It attracts a steady attendance of tourists and locals throughout the day, making for a busy bar. When the bar was altered additional tiling was added and the overall effect remains authentic.

    $4.3m Transformation of Grand Mercure Melbourne Flinders Lane Unveiled

    Accor Vacation Club celebrated the 90th Birthday of the Grand Mercure Melbourne, Flinders Lane building by recently completing a multi-million dollar makeover of the hotel. The project is the most ambitious in the history of owners, Accor Vacation Club, who have spent $4.3 million to bring the property back to its glamorous glory, so well known by stars of stage and screen over the past two decades.The building, which is located at 321 Flinders Lane, was built in 1921 on the former Dr. Jaeger’s Sanitary Woollen System Co. Ltd site, the company later evolving in to the internationally renowned Jaeger fashion House. The building was first tenanted in 1923 and housed various textile and fashion retailers including Wallace Buck & Goodes Pty Ltd, the founder of Henry Bucks & Co Pty Ltd.

    The design philosophy of Penny Del Castillo’s from In Design International drew inspiration from those early “fashion house” days with a view of creating an expression of sophisticated elegance, through an individual design concept that would remain unique to Grand Mercure Melbourne, Flinders lane.

    The result has turned this “all suite” apartment hotel into a market leading boutique product, which presents a contemporary range of sophisticated suites that infuse modern design philosophies with the architectural and historical heritage of the building.

    Craig Wood CEO of Accor Vacation Club commented “The fashion designers who occupied the building in days gone by would have appreciated the creative elements and chic flair used in the overall design and we would like to believe they would be proud knowing that their influences live on today! That said when they occupied the building in 1923 they could lease an entire floor of the building for only £1,900 per annum, fortunately for us times and room rates have changed”.

    World’s Highest Hotel: The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA in Hong Kong

    HBA London has completed the interior design of The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA, located in the International Commerce Centre (ICC) – the tallest building in Hong Kong and the fourth tallest in the world. The Ritz-Carlton occupies the uppermost 15 levels of the 118-floor building, qualifying it as the world’s highest hotel. The design of the spa on the 116th and 118th floors has made the ESPA a focal point of the city’s skyline and a jewelled urban escape atop Hong Kong’s crown of lights.Those who stay at The Ritz-Carlton or indulge in the over 900 m2 ESPA have the unique opportunity to view the sweeping panorama of the city from its highest vantage point, including the awe-inspiring vistas of Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong Island and the New Territories.

    The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA is more than 300 metres above the frenetic streets of Hong Kong, allowing guests to simultaneously feel attached to the city with its breathtaking views yet totally insulated from the hustle and bustle below. To enhance the sense of being “cocooned amongst the clouds”, the space plan has been designed to have no sharp corners; walls are curved as if providing a protective embrace.

    Upon entering, guests are greeted by soft forms and natural finishes. Overhead, a floating art installation is suspended from the ceiling; strands of “butterfly cocoons” delicately fashioned from porcelain introduce a calming connotation of renewal. The walls are clad with finely textured horsehair, while the bronze metal-infused timber of the floor’s perimeter contrasts with the central reception area’s cool ivory stone tiles. Plush seating and the curved alabaster reception desk, backlit to cast an ethereal glow, reinforce the feeling of being comfortably enveloped.

    The treatment rooms are located on the 116th floor and provide floor-to-ceiling fenestration framing spectacular views of the cityscape. Suspended like streams of ribbons against the glass, gracefully twisted strips of ivory coloured metal act as screens and create a playful dialogue between light beams and shadows within the sinuous lines of the treatment room. A glass lighting pendant shaped like a raindrop glistens in contrast to the textured horsehair and brushed bronze wall treatments. Sliding doors hide the room’s amenities, resulting in a clean and tranquil style.

    Andy Thornton Completes Refurbishment of Old Thorns Manor Hotel Golf & Country Estate

    Following a lengthy and extensive programme of refurbishment, Old Thorns Golf & Country Club now has an enviable reputation as one of the south of England’s finest golf, leisure and wedding venues. Located near Liphook amidst 400-acres of rolling Hampshire countryside, it now offers relaxing health spa facilities, fantastic cuisine and an outstanding 18-hole Peter Alliss-designed championship golf course.To help owners, the Shaw family, achieve their ambition to develop such an enviable leisure venue so close to London and the international airports of Heathrow and Gatwick, they enlisted the help of specialist interior contractor Andy Thornton Ltd, who they have worked with on many ventures in the past. Over the last two years Andy Thornton has been responsible for manufacturing and installing key features in the bar areas and decorative architectural lighting throughout the hotel, during a carefully planned programme of improvements.

    The first area to receive the Andy Thornton treatment was the Atrium Champagne & Cocktail Bar where the clients wanted to create a sophisticated function area, suitable for events such as glittering champagne receptions and marriages. They commissioned one of Andy Thornton’s signature bars, the classical ‘Triple Arch’ design, evocative of Prohibition-period Chicago, is identical to one they had purchased for another hotel.

    The bar, which creates a stunning centrepiece to the large room, is an impressive 4.25 metres in height and 9.2 metres in length. It comprises an imposing mahogany back bar with three mirrored and arched reveals between ornately carved columns. The curved panelled bar counter, also in solid mahogany, features a granite worktop and solid brass lions head handrail and Pegasus foot rail.

    Above the bar counter hang two enormous cast brass chandeliers and a number of inverted tiffany-style pendants are positioned above the seating area. In fact, Andy Thornton supplied a considerable amount of decorative lighting around the public areas, including sixty torchere wall lights with flambeau shades and more tiffany-style pendants in the reception and link corridor, plus drum pendants in the Kings Brasserie Restaurant.

    Every sportsman’s dream is the new Sports Bar, which is the latest area to be worked on by Andy Thornton. Here they installed a stylish oak bar counter featuring raised and fielded panelling, granite bar top and stainless steel handrails and foot rails. It works well with the simple but elegant oak back bar and overhead glass racks.

    What creates the unique sporting ambience is the inclusion of themed sport memorabilia, carefully selected by Andy Thornton to blend in with the furnishings and multiple flat screens. What better combination, a truly electric atmosphere within a cosy pub environment.

    In all, the work undertaken by Andy Thornton represents a £200K investment in key revenue generating public areas within the hotel and the Shaw’s are now in discussion with the company to involve it in their latest development, the addition of a new bedroom block, to add to the existing 83 rooms.

    The hotel has come a long way from its origins as a 17th century farmhouse.

The Clash was not just a Punk band. Everyone must have some great ‘faux pas’ from the era of shinny leather jackets and thin ties, surely?

    Whilst looking through the Ramparts back catalogue of projects we came across these ‘rare examples’ of opulent finishes and just had to share them with you. We’ve been asked to create all manner of styles over the last 39 years and we can say hand on heart, yes, mirrors on the ceiling – been there done that.

    Hotel Design: Luxury boutique hotel in Switzerland

    Jestico + Whiles has completed the interior design of the luxurious boutique hotel Villa Honegg in Switzerland, recently classified as ‘Five Star Superior’. Sitting at an altitude of almost 1,000 metres on Mount Bürgenstock, the exclusive resort provides guests with a peaceful haven and magnificent views across Lake Lucerne.The five‐storey chalet style hotel was originally built in 1905 in the Scandinavian ‘Gustavian’ style. Its facades have been restored by local craftsman to ensure its survival for another century or more.

    Hotel Villa Honegg is a luxurious private retreat with 23 suites and guestrooms, spa, finedining restaurant, conference facilities and a cinema‐quality screening room. An outdoor infinity pool and whirlpool has stunning views over the lake and mountains.

    The design for the interiors was inspired by the breathtaking scenery in which the hotel is set. Rich timber and stone have been combined with silk and leather in natural colours to create a comfortable, contemporary environment. This is complemented by carefully selected, hand‐crafted furniture finished in classic leathers and elegant, timeless fabrics. Every finish has been carefully chosen for its inviting appearance and texture, grain, pile, and weave, to provide a tactile quality to each surface.

    Planning permission granted for Salcombe Harbour Hotel

    Salcombe Harbour Hotel (The Marine Hotel) is set for a top-to-toe refurbishment, as exciting refurbishmentplans aregiven the go-ahead.

    Operated by the Harbour Hotels Collectionsince March 2010, reinventing the Great British seaside with four-star waterside retreatsacross the south coast, there will be a multi million pound investment into this landmark Hotel. Currently boasting five Hotels across the Devon, Dorset and Cornwall coastline, the Harbour Hotels Collection continues to go from strength to strength. Following on from the hugely successful refurbishment of the Christchurch Harbour Hotel (previously The Avonmouth Hotel) and with St Ives Harbour Hotel (previously The Porthminster Hotel) developments drawing to an end, Salcombe Harbour Hotel is next in line.

    Having submitted plans for the Salcombe Harbour Hotel, that include the installation of a luxury ‘Harbour Spa’ and additional facilities, with anew function room for weddings, conferences and special events, a fully refurbished restaurant and50 refurbished bedrooms, the application followed a series of public events – giving local residents and visitors to the Hotel the opportunity to view and comment on the proposals.

    With everyone extremely excited about the refurbishment plans, the project has now been approved. Commencing October 2011, the project will complete early Summer 2012, with an end product that can be enjoyed bynew and regular visitors to the Hotel for generations to come.

    The Waldorf Hilton Launches Private Bar

    The Waldorf Hilton, situated on Aldwych in the heart of London’s theatre district, is re-launching its Homage Bar exclusively for private bookings. Homage, previously the hotel’s cocktail bar, will be an exclusive venue and follows the launch of the hotel’s newly acclaimed flagship bar Good Godfrey’s Bar and Lounge, which opened earlier this year.Homage has played host to the finest parties of the fashion elite and gatherings of corporate aristocracy. Designed by the famous restaurateur, Sir Roy Ackerman, its luxurious surroundings are in keeping with the hotel’s heritage, which dates back to 1908. The venue was originally three bars separated by pillars – Gaslight Bar, Opera Bar and Carriages Bar – catering for theatre goers in the early 1900s. The interior was originally inspired by the grand cafés of Europe and still retains those stunning and unique features today.

    The versatile venue is suitable for a range of events, catering up to 50 people, such as breakfast gatherings, networking events, presentations, product launches, birthday celebrations and festive occasions. Cocktail parties are also on offer, with a private cocktail making lesson hosted by the hotel’s award-winning mixology team.

    Modern and Majestic: Le Méridien Stuttgart

    The Diplomatic and Presidential Suites of Le Méridien Stuttgart have recently undergone a soft refurbishment by Hamburg-based interior design practice JOI-Design. The hotel is situated next to the verdant Schlossgarten Park, at the heart of a city known for its proximity to the Black Forest and its vineyards as well as its beautiful squares, varied architecture and cultural heritage. With panoramic views of a 650 year-old palace garden bestowed with both 10th century and Baroque castles, the hotel’s Diplomatic Suite mirrors this elegant provenance yet is also stylishly contemporary. Its spacious 160m2 footprint feels comfortable and residential, with features such as traditional mouldings and the working Carmen Red granite fireplace – a rare luxury for a hotel. In the living room, oversized mirrors capture the light and views of the surrounding gardens, while simple wall treatments enhance this impact as well as the intrigue sparked by the floral wallcovering viewed through the mahogany door. Tranquil tones of taupe and grey in the textiles, along with muted “regal” purple accents, allow the zip of orange in the artwork to concentrate the room’s focus towards the lounge area and intensify its visual excitement.

    Double doors lead to a timelessly graceful dining room and an adjoining, light-filled conservatory overlooking the gardens below. Rich mahogany timbers, a polished stainless steel glass-top dining table, and a neutral palette of solid colours result in a stately space suitable for entertaining guests. At night, the disc-shaped “floating” chandelier crafted from perforated metal scatters ethereal twinkles of light across the room.

    In contrast to the “public” spaces’ masculine confidence, the “private” master bedroom and secondary bedroom have a delightful, feminine feel. The floral wallcoverings’ tone-on-tone greys allow the spaces to be playful yet modern, while the predominance of white in the upholstery and painted millwork add freshness. In the master bathroom, a square bathtub and tiles in Carrara marble contribute a classic touch. The secondary bedroom benefits from a sunroom extension framed by smartly striped curtains connecting the design with that of the dining room.

    Le Méridien Stuttgart also enjoys the largest suite in the city, the 250 m2 Presidential Suite which has been re-imagined to have a timeless elegance with a sophisticated grey and gold colour palette. Grand mirrors with richly polished timber frames draw the light and lush vistas viewed through the windows into the living room, the heart of the spaces. The original, working fireplace creates a natural gathering space, providing a warm and cosy comfort that makes guests feel right at home. Adjacent to the living room is an intimate, round dining table hewn from honey-tinged hardwoods and an elevated winter garden, a solarium fitted with plush ivory upholstered loungers that offer an ideal spot for relaxation in the sunlight – especially cherished during the cooler months.

    With its generous footprint, the Presidential Suite is large enough to accommodate a conference room. Heavy, full-height mahogany doors contribute to the sense of grandeur, along with a stately, 12-seat table crafted from beautifully grained hardwood solids and with traditionally fluted pediments. A tiered crystal chandelier above the table provides an elegant lighting solution that is bright enough for the functional requirements of a meeting, yet can be dimmed when the space is used as an impressive dining room for entertaining guests.

The center also includes various training facilities for designers, showroom staff and installers.

    5 Stars for East Lodge

    Rowsley’s multi-award winning Peak District hotel and restaurant, East Lodge, has numerous accolades and titles to its name, yet the walls at East Lodge keep filling with further certificates and accreditations for excellence. The latest to be added to the already impressive and growing list is the much sought after 5 Star Hygiene Award, awarded by Derbyshire Dales District Council for Food Hygiene.Having recently undergone a major £250,000 refurbishment, the kitchen at East Lodge has been transformed.     New Bathroom TV with Bluetooth

    Following the success of their 17” Infiniti unit, TechVision have kept the same stylish design, but incorporated a larger 19” LCD screen. The Bluetooth technology allows hotel guests to easily listen to stored music (from their Bluetooth listening devices, i.e., ipod), whilst relaxing in the bath, as well as enjoy watching their favorite TV shows!The TV itself is fully waterproof and suitable for use in all wet areas, i.e., bathrooms, spas, washrooms or outdoors. The heated, toughened glass screen comes in either Clear or Mirror finish, with a choice of ‘finishing strips’ to match your décor.

    Installation is simple, as it’s already a sealed unit! The TVs can either be recessed into the wall or wall mounted, using a vesa bracket.

    Edgbaston bowled over by Axminster Carpets

    Axminster Carpets Commercial has provided over 2,500m2 of semi-bespoke Ready to Weave carpet for Edgbaston, the home of Warwickshire County Cricket and international test match venue. Using the improved 32 strong colour bank of the Ready to Weave concept, Axminster Carpets developed a scheme that accommodated the multi-purpose 850m2 Banqueting Suite. Here three large bordered squares work as one or individually when the room is partitioned to suit different function requirements. Using the familiar blue of Edgbaston’s identity, the carpet delivers a unique aesthetic in a high performance Super Eight 80% wool 20% nylon blend.

    Specified by Manchester-based architect AFL Architects, the design of the carpet required site visits by Axminster Carpets design director Gary Bridge to ensure the correct placement of the design within the banqueting suite, as well as the careful planning required by the circular area of the lounges.

    PAI Group – Radisson Hotel, Cardiff

    Working closely with M&E Consultants Hoare Lea, Vaughan Sound Installations (part of the PAI Group of companies) designed a multi-zone background music system, as well as easy-to-use multimedia display and conference facilities for the hotel’s meeting and function rooms.

    Technical Solutions
    To ensure that audio-visual facilities were simple to operate and multi-functional, AMX control systems, accompanied by wall-mounted LCD controllers, were selected and installed.

    The carefully considered distribution and positioning of the signal facility panels assured that the multi-faceted spaces were adaptable and could effectively cater for both small and large audiences.

    Signal input and output matrixing with a digital sound processor was also introduced, enabling clients to connect peripheral equipment to any chosen input point. Laptops, video cameras and iPods are amongst the devices that can be used to project media onto one or a combination of screens.

    Additionally, HD projectors and projection screens were fitted on retractable hoists within the desired rooms. Concealing the equipment when not required not only prevents damage, but ensures guests can customise and use the whole space

    The multi-zone background music system was installed to deliver eight music channels to eight independent zones, each with its own digital controller, providing clients with the option to change music selection and volume levels.

    Outcome
    Vaughan Sound contracted with Honeybun Construction to successfully deliver the project on time and well within budget.

    Music and background sound is now easily accessible and can be operated at the hotel’s various bars, restaurants and leisure facilities. The technically comprehensive systems are simple to use, flexible and can adapt to numerous room set up scenarios.

    “I don’t know whether you’ll like this” said Chris with a worried frown. It was party time at Simons, and we had spent the day treasure hunting around the outer suburbs of Dublin in Dalkey and Killiney, and the last thing I needed was the suggestion that our B&B was not up to much. Blimey, did she read it wrong! Druid Lodge is an assemblage, a work of love and art assembled by two of Ireland’s unsung heroes, interiors that some designers aspire to create but here an organic living memory bank.

    It starts on the street – although to call this narrow country lane a street, despite its urban location is perhaps inaccurate. High walls, verdant growth of trees and shrubs made finding the Druid Lodge difficult in the dark. The narrow entrance of open dilapidated iron gates barely admitting my motor into a drive that hinted of adventure and exploration, trees making a tunnel to the house, an ivy covered veteran of the 19th Century. It was party time at Druid Lodge as host Ken McClenaghan organised the celebration of his partner Cynthia’s 65th birthday, with his large family around an outdoor garden fireplace in the gathering gloom.

    The front door opened in welcome and I suspect my jaw dropped at the cornucopia of art and craft from striking contemporary pastels to church pews that spread before me. Every space, vertical and horizontal, was covered – Ken is obviously not a subscriber to minimalism, but there was order underlying the madness and the large and beautiful room spaces carried everything with aplomb. These are interiors that fascinated in their detail, constantly revealing little surprises, from a hand written vellum Quoran of obvious antiquity through deco marble carvings to pseudo Renoirs.

    £10 Million Refurbishment at Lancaster London

    The Lancaster London, one of Europe’s largest banqueting venues, is spending over £10 million on a major refurbishment project to renovate its award-winning banqueting venues and install brand new commercial kitchens. Banqueting Rooms
    An ambitious 10 week refurbishment project will completely transform the Lancaster London’s Nine Kings Suite and Westbourne Suite, which can host receptions for up to 3,000 guests. Overseen by leading hotel designer, Alex Kravetz the project will be completed on 5 September 2011. The refurbishment is being managed by architect, Denis Day of Ashleigh House Developments Ltd, who has worked with the hotel since 1984.

    The Entrance Foyer will be remodelled to showcase stunning feature edge lit mother-of-pearl glass mirror panels from Sans Souci. The glass will be framed by ziricote veneer panels, a striking and rarely used wood species from Central America which has a beautiful dark-wood grain. The unusual veneer has been produced by Alpi, a company which is particularly sensitive to the preservation of raw materials and responsible forest management with low environmental impact. The entrance floor will be replaced with marble slabs, and a bronze liquid metal finish will be applied to the door frames to create a warm and inviting first impression.

    The Pre-function Area will have new bespoke carpets throughout with a dynamic and bold pattern. All the light wood panelling will be removed and replaced with fresh wall coverings from Tektura to brighten the space. Fior di Pesco marble pilasters will frame antique mirror wall panels with decorative wall sconces reflecting the light throughout.

    Bronze entrance doors will lead into the main Nine Kings Ballroom. 18 stunning drop-glass 2m x 2m chandeliers will be retained and refurbished. The rest of the ceiling will be transformed. The dated mirror panels will be stripped and further coffer details will be added to layer the lighting in the vast space. Colour changing elements and dimmable controls have been detailed by Elektra Lighting to create a modern and flexible system for any style of function taking place. Low energy LED lighting will also be installed in the banqueting spaces. The existing Rosso Francia marble pilasters will be framed by additional Fior di Pesco marble columns which will house integral sandblasted backlit glass panel lighting.

    Staybridge Suites Orlando Airport Opens Following Complete Renovation

    IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) has announced the opening of the Staybridge Suites Orlando Airport that recently underwent a $1.3 million conversion from a Hawthorne Suites by Wyndham. The hotel is conveniently located near Orlando International Airport and overlooking Lake Lori.The four-story, 135-room hotel is conveniently located within one mile of the airport, Lockheed Martin and within close proximity to the Orlando VA Medical Center and Nemours Children’s Hospital. For entertainment, the hotel is near the Orlando Watersports Complex, golf courses, The Florida Mall and Wall Street Plaza in downtown Orlando that has restaurants and nightlife. The hotel also provides easy access to the new Amway Center and the Orlando Convention Center on International Drive. Area attractions such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld are all within 20 miles of the hotel.

    The hotel features three well-designed spacious suite options (deluxe studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom/two-bath). All suites include in-room DVD/CD players; functional, well-lit work stations with ergonomic seating; speaker phones, personal voice mail and complimentary local phone calls; and fully equipped kitchens.

    A grand carpet for the Grand’s ballroom

    The majesty and grace of the ballroom at the Grand Hotel, Brighton is now continued upon its floor with a bespoke carpet from Wilton Carpets Commercial.

    The 700 square metres of carpet throughout the ballroom gestures towards the heritage of the hotel with a bespoke Jacobean influenced pattern, given a contemporary feel with a large-scale pattern repeat that also balances well with the large floor space of the room. Unusually for a room coming under intensive use, the bespoke wool-rich axminster woven carpet features an uplifting warm base colour that helps to lift the rich tones used as accents within the pattern and which provides a bright feel in keeping with the hotel’s seaside location. Opened in 1864, the Grand Hotel is one of Brighton’s most famous buildings, with its Victorian architecture standing as a landmark on the seafront. The ballroom makes the most of the seaside location with a partial glazed façade.

    The design was based upon a carpet originally produced for another venue in the portfolio of the grand Hotel’s operator De Vere Group and as designer, Harriet Forde, Harriet Forde Design, explains the process included revisions to all elements of the original design:

    “After some initial concepts, it was decided that an existing design would prove suitable for use in the ballroom but it was obvious that it would need to be adapted to suit the space. Working with the in-house design team at Wilton Carpets, we looked at the scale of the pattern and different colour combinations. The final design suits the scale of the ballroom and the colourway helps to ‘lift’ the room giving a majestic feel while also providing soil-hiding properties.”

    With its durable 80% wool 20% nylon woven axminster construction, the carpet meets the De Vere Group’s requirement for a carpet that can withstand the demands of a busy function room, disguising spills and dirt throughout an event and proving hardwearing enough to endure regular intensive use. CFA accredited contractor Gravity Flooring installed the carpet, with the Middlesex-based company also providing accurate measurements of the space at the design stage to assist with planning the layout.

    “The success of the design needed to be millimetre perfect,” comments Natalie Trumper, operations, Gravity Flooring. “As with any old building, the walls in the Grand are far from straight and so we even had to account for fluctuation here to stop the bordered design looking irregular. Wilton made the carpet to our exact measurements and requirements, so that when installed the carpet appears seamless and the border runs equidistant from all four walls and at all points in the room.”

    Reducing impact through transportation, the carpet was manufactured at Wilton Carpets’ Wiltshire production site and shipped directly to the Grand Hotel.

    Shining Stars from Design-Conscious

    Every now and then a new product comes on the market that just ticks every box – and these two new additions really do outshine the competition. Not only are they good looking, but they have both been designed utilizing LED and Fluorescent energy efficiency to great effect. Jacqui from Design-Conscious tells us more about the products…Dina is an archetypal image of a small lamp. It encompasses everything great about the hugely popular Miss K Lamp (by Philippe Starck / Flos), only ‘better’ (some may say) because it’s powered by energy efficient LEDs.

    A tough polycarbonate shade on an aluminium body, housing 6W of Cree LED (3000K, 400 lumen) complete with touch dimming. The light is soft and warm – the perfect table light, bedside or living room lamp.

    London Hilton on Park Lane Unveils its Latest High-Tech Suite

    The Penthouse suite on the 26th floor of London Hilton on Park Lane has undergone a £500,000 refurbishment. Interior designer, Lynne Hunt, was tasked with revamping the luxurious Penthouse Suite that includes a double master bedroom, a dining room for eight people, a lounge with views over Hyde Park, a state-of-the-art bathroom and very spacious connecting room, which turns into a top end two bedroom suite. To complete the upgrade, the London Hilton on Park Lane is also introducing an optional butler service available to guests staying in the Penthouse Suite.

    The contemporary suite has many stylish and unique features, such as a bespoke light feature and an electric flame fire in the living room. The master bathroom boasts a TV in the mirror, as well as a jacuzzi bath and steam shower. But, one of the real highlights is the unrivalled views over Hyde Park, Mayfair and Buckingham Palace from the comfort of a private balcony.

    LE Announces Its Forecast for New Hotel Openings For 2013

    409 hotels/39,162 rooms – expects net supply growth of just 0.6%-0.8% for each of the next three years.For the first time, Lodging Econometrics has announced its Forecast for New Hotel Openings for 2013. A total of 409 new hotels/39,162 guest rooms are anticipated to come online. LE also adjusted its Forecast for 2011 and 2012 down slightly, as continued economic uncertainty and the lack of construction financing still hamper development.

    In 2011, 390 hotels/42,187 rooms will open, with an additional 368 hotels/40,070 rooms to open in 2012. Net supply growth, after removals from inventory, will range from 0.6%-0.8% for each of the next three years.

    Interchange & Consort Hotels appoints Richard Lewis as CEO

    Interchange and Consort Hotels, the parent brand of Best Western Great Britain, Beacon Purchasing and Innfutures has announced the appointment of Richard Lewis as CEO. Lewis has over 35 years experience in the hospitality and travel industries including over thirteen years in international markets. Previous senior roles include managing director Preferred Hotel Group, EMEA; COO WorldRes; VP Hotel Distribution, Turner Broadcasting CNN International; and international marketing operations director, Forte and Le Merdien Hotels.

    After completing a four year management training course with the Savoy Hotel Group, London, Lewis took a number of operational roles in the U.K., Libya, Egypt and Malta and to further his cross-industry knowledge, Lewis developed his career within advertising and marketing agencies in the U.A.E and London.

    Lewis ‘rejoined’ the hotel industry in the early 90’s and his background in executive positions within operations, sales, marketing, e-commerce, distribution and brand development will be of significant benefit to Best Western, as it drives forward with the successful ‘Hotels with personality’ strategy and to Beacon, as the purchasing solutions company enhances its online capability.

    Marriott International and Granite Broadway Development to Develop New York City’s Tallest Hotel

    Marriott International, Inc. and ownership group Granite Broadway Development announced has recently signed a franchise agreement to develop the Courtyard and Residence Inn Manhattan/Central Park, a soaring, new 68-story property housing two distinctly different hotels – the 378-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel and the 261-room Residence Inn by Marriott hotel — at 1717 Broadway (at 54th Street). The multi-million dollar project will open in late 2013 and be managed by Interstate Hotels and Resorts.Designed by architect Nobutaka Ashihara, the building will rise 752 feet, nine inches high, making it the tallest stand-alone hotel building (without office or residential space) in New York. The Courtyard hotel will provide a refreshing environment for business and leisure travelers, while the Residence Inn will offer all-suite accommodation for longer stays. The property will also incorporate leased retail and restaurant space.

    The hotels will share a main entrance and arrival lobby on 54th Street, with public areas for the Residence Inn on the 3rd floor and for the Courtyard on the 4th floor. Guest rooms for the Courtyard will be located on floors 6 through 32 and for Residence Inn on floors 36 through 64, with separate elevator banks to serve the guestrooms and public areas for each brand.

    In addition to ground floor retail space, a leased restaurant will occupy the 2nd floor, and a 5th floor lounge and terrace with outdoor seating will have a great view overlooking Broadway. Both hotels will share a fitness facility on the 34th floor.

    The 378-room Courtyard by Marriott will offer the brand’s signature “refreshing business” lobby, featuring bright contemporary design, innovative technology and flexible space. The redefined area allows guests more control and choice over their stay, with services and amenities that create a healthy balance between working and relaxing.     Marriott International Announces Its First Hotel in Benin

    Marriott International has recently announced that it has signed an agreement with SHRL-Benin SA to manage an upscale, 200-room, full-service Marriott Hotels & Resorts-branded hotel in Cotonou, Benin that is planned to open in 2013. It will be the third Marriott International-branded property in sub-Saharan Africa.Located on a prime beachfront site adjacent to Cotonou’s convention centre—close to the Presidential Palace in the diplomatic and government quarter of the city and within a five-minute drive from the international airport and sea port—the hotel will be attractive to international long-haul and regional business, government and conference travellers.

    The Cotonou Marriott will provide an array of services, connectivity and amenities to help business travellers achieve their goals. Its interiors will be stylish and modern, blending the latest in residential design, colour and real comfort and creating an environment that encourages work accomplishments, socializing with others and staying fit. Recreational amenities will include a private beach, outdoor swimming pool, a health & leisure club and tennis courts.

    PAI Group – PAI Lights the Sky at the Stradey Park Hotel

    The PAI Group has designed, specified and installed a colourful, eye-catching lighting scheme in the “Roof top lounge” at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli.

    The hotel, a well established local landmark, is privately run by Gryphon Leisure. It’s just had a new rooftop conservatory lounge built, giving the grand old Edwardian building a contrasting and contemporary twist.Gryphon initially approached PAI to provide an audio solution for the new space. However, as soon as Paul Adams set eyes on the plans, he immediately saw the potential for lighting. He suggested this to the client, who was also convinced, and gave Adams the green light to create a scheme.

    “The place was just crying out to be lit” explains Adams “It was a simple idea to basically edge light the glass panels of the roof, but one that I knew would have massive impact”. Adams conceived the lighting design with Geoff Jones from i-Vision, utilising a total of twenty one i-Vision 1200 mm colour changing Lumos linear LED strips along the glass. These back-light the roof panel blinds when drawn whilst simultaneously providing external illumination.

    This results in the textured surface of the blinds – which absorb light beautifully – being lit or colour changing in a series of enriched and sumptuous hues from the inside. Simultaneously from the outside, there’s also a WOW factor as the light output shoots straight onto the glass and shimmers in the night skies.

    Running the length of the roof inside the conservatory, Adams had a stainless steel plate designed and custom made, into which is recessed blue LED and Uno and Duo (ES111 75watt lamp) fittings to provide conventional white lighting. These are supported by a selection of wall and table lamps for general ambience.

    Outside, the conservatory is a wood-decked terrace. Here Adams specified 22 i-Vision Lumos in-ground colour changing fittings, placed around the outside of the decking, flooding up the glass conservatory and the turret walls enclosing the terrace.

    All lighting is integrated and run via a Sunlight controller and Pulsar data-packs.
    For branding, PAI had two custom neon ‘Gryphon’ signs made, one for the terraced decking and the other for the main entrance.

    For the audio installation, PAI specified a good quality background sound system consisting of a CD player and 3 zone mixer/amp, a Cloud zoner and 10 Australian Monitor wall speakers.

    As well as its role as the residents lounge, the rooftop space is intended for use as a small function room and conference facility, so PAI added a 42 inch plasma screen for presentations.

    Brintons bought out of administration

    Following the news that broke yesterday (Sunday 4th September) that Brintons had been bought out of administration by the US Carlyle Group, we received the press release below.

    I worked with the company on a number of hotel projects, most notably the Celtic Manor, and am a long standing admirer of their weaving skills. The recent recreation of the staircase carpet at the Renaissance St. Pancras was a tour de force from the comapny.

    The divorce of design from the weaving sheds in recent years as the company sought the cheapest manufacturing solutions was always, to my mind, a negative move. Designers need an understanding of the manufacturing processes and the close unity of design and manufacturing has been a feature of UK industrial strength.

    The comtemporary divorce of the two has been part of a fatal management disease infecting British politicians and industry alike. Brintons is the latest to fall victim to this disease. It will undoubtedly not be the last.

    Revolution in New Zealand’s Budget Hotel Sector as Formule 1 Takes off at Auckland Airport

    The opening of Formule 1 Auckland Airport on the 29th August heralded a revolution in New Zealand’s budget hotel sector.

    The launch of the first new-build Formule 1 in New Zealand is part of a major new accommodation and hospitality complex at the airport that also includes fast-food outlets, a bar, and mobile phone store. The 125 room Formule 1 and the rest of the complex have been developed by Auckland International Airport.

    Formule 1 is Accor’s purpose-designed budget brand that is already present in countries across Europe, South America, South Africa and in Australia. The brand is also set for major expansion in Asia.

    The hotel will provide the ultimate in reliable, contemporary accommodation at the highly affordable rate. There are also double, twin and quadruple share rooms, making the hotel ideal for couples, groups and families. In addition there are five large special-access rooms.

    The hotel features Formule 1’s new Cocoon concept room. The rooms are more stylish, more restful room with soft colours, rounded edges and soothing lighting, as well as extra storage space. Facilities include flat screen TVs with extra channels, wireless internet and a strong focus on sustainability, the Cocoon Room won Best Interior Design at the European Hotels Design Awards and represents a real metamorphosis for the brand, which was first introduced in 1984. Other in-room facilities include quality bedding with duvets, ensuite bathroom, individual air-conditioning and a work table. Rooms are completely sound-proofed.

    The Formule 1 offers an inexpensive breakfast buffet, with more substantial meals available during the day from the various outlets in the complex, including the Szimpla Gastro Pub, health food café, and coffee shop. There is parking for up to 70 cars.

    Within a few hundred metres of the hotel there is a huge supermarket, a number of additional fast food outlets, a bank, New Zealand Post and a camper van hire centre.

    The hotel is managed by Accor, New Zealand’s largest hotel group. The Formule 1 Auckland Airport increases Accor’s New Zealand network to 32 hotels.

    Andy Thornton furnishes Heathrow ‘super lounge’

    Andy Thornton has just completed a substantial contract to supply stylish bespoke contract furniture to the new No.1 Heathrow Airport Lounge and Travel Spa, in Terminal 3 of the world’s busiest international airport. They worked closely on the exacting specification and choice of finishes with the projects interior designers Inside Out Architecture.Having supplied previously to lounges at both Gatwick and Stansted Airports both operated successfully by client No.1 Traveller, the company was delighted to be invited to supply to this flagship ‘super lounge’, which opened its doors on 11th August.

    The client’s aim was to provide the ultimate pre-flight experience and create a space that suits the needs of all of Terminal 3’s departing passengers. They achieved this by creating a lounge with something for everyone, from the bustling bar and bistro, through to the quiet snug and soothing spa. Andy Thornton provided furniture solutions for all key areas.

    In the main lounge area, Andy Thornton supplied a mixture of two and three seater Chesterfield sofas and matching cubes, with button-back upholstery in rich Yarwood leather. These are complemented by a number of bespoke chaise longues upholstered in a vibrant patterned Romo fabric.

    In the terrace lounge area, which provides panoramic runway views, the company sourced versatile swivel chairs in chrome with seats and backs upholstered in co-ordinated Panaz fabrics. More cubes and a selection of black and white circular coffee tables with solid marble tops were also used.

    To add a bit of fun, the client also specified two quirky basket egg chairs, to be suspended from the ceiling by the ‘Green Wall’, a living wall of exotic, tropical plants that creates a tranquil space for weary travellers.

    In the bar area, Andy Thornton combined high-back lounge chairs, complete with lumbar cushions for an extremely comfortable sit, all upholstered in contrasting velvets together with black pedestal coffee tables. Behind these and fronting the corian-topped minimalist walnut bar are elegant contrasting black on black bar stools.

    In the bistro, Andy Thornton sourced Print chairs from Dan-Form, which feature elaborate seats and backs in white plastic on chrome frames. The matching gloss white tables comprise of turned pedestals with square glacier white corian tops.

    The No.1 VIP room is home to more bespoke high back chairs from Andy Thornton, whilst the company supplied the luxurious armchairs with substantial cushions upholstered in a mix of rich-coloured soft leathers for maximum comfort in the discreet cinema room. The company also provided bespoke furniture for the drawing room, Wii room and games room.

    The look was completed with the liberal use of co-ordinated scatter cushions for the banquette seating, lounge chairs and sofas, successfully pulling the overall colour scheme together.

    Kempinski opened hotel in Huizhou, China

    With the opening of the Kempinski Hotel Huizhou, Kempinski established its presence in the city and the whole province of Guangdong.     Hotel Altis completes first phase of five million euro renovations

    Great Hotels of the World Luxury Collection member, Hotel Altis in Lisbon, Portugal has announced the completion of the first phase of a multi-million euro renovation.

    200 guestrooms have been completely refurbished and the entrance lobby has been restored, completed at the end of August 2011.The renovation, managed by architects Cristina Santos e Silva and Ana Menezes Cardoso restores the spirit of innovation and vision of the original designer Daciano da Costa whilst creating a more modern, sophisticated and current ambiance.

    The original structure was kept in the rooms, with new coatings and original woodwork replaced. New ebony and stainless steel furniture has been placed in the rooms and the décor in the hallways has been replaced as well as new carpets.

    The reception lobby was renovated by the same architects as well as Joao Paciencia. The remodelling positions the service desk in the front wall of the lobby and is framed by black lacquer. A new bar and rest area fills the area of the old reception desk.

    Villa Clarisse, the stunning sister property of Hôtel de Toiras, has enjoyed its early months of business since opening its French doors to guests on the 1st June 2011. The property located on a secluded side street in Saint Martin de Ré has been described as an “idyllic setting in the heart of this pretty port town”. The truly delightful 18th century property, classified by the Batiments de France, is the historic birthplace of General Lapasset, a French general of the 19th century. The monochrome pallet used throughout complements the historic character and features of the villa.     PAI Group – The Millennium Stadium, Cardiff

    Since opening in June 1999, the Millennium Stadium has welcomed, on average, over 1.3 million visitors per year. The stadium boasts the first fully-retractable roof in the UK and is a leading venue for multi-purpose, multi-faceted events.Vaughan Sound Installations (VSI) has worked with the Millennium Stadium historically on a number of installation projects; this includes teaming up with Security Centres to install a new fire telephone system. More recently, VSI in conjunction with CUK Audio, Baldwin Boxall and the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) completed a major refurbishment of the stadium’s audio system. Essentially the client brief was to deliver an economic, cost-effective solution with the emphasis on improving the systems operation and performance.

    Technical Solutions
    The WRU chose VSI to refurbish and maintain the stadiums audio system. In order to deliver best value commercially and technically VSI entered into collaboration with CUK Audio to co-ordinate and integrate the new audio solution. Community Loudspeakers are internationally recognised in the arena of sport stadia. As a result of this partnership, audio quality, intelligibility and overall coverage have been vastly improved. Additionally, in the eventuality of an emergency evacuation VSI have incorporated the new audio system with the stadium’s life safety system.

    The existing Community M4 and EM 280 horns were reconfigured and reinforced by the addition of R6 Bass bins around the pitch perimeter. Powersoft K series and DC amplifiers were installed to power the front end supplemented by the original crest amplifiers. Powersoft LQ-2804 & Q-4002 amplifiers were utilised to improve the Community WET2V8 under balcony delays.

    Behind the scenes, the Baldwin Boxall Vigil EVAS network router and controller monitors distribution between each of the stadium’s six racks and interfaces with the fire alarm system. A new mimic display touch-screen is installed in the stadium’s control room for match day operation together with a zoned BVRD microphone in the security room. A new enhanced data network cable links the distributed racks throughout the stadium. Processing within the main stadium bowl is provided by dual BSS Soundweb BLU 80 processers in each of the rack locations. The existing 100 v line circuits have all been reconfigured and interfaced with the new system to vastly improve communication throughout.

    Morris and Webb at Standen

    I’m a sucker for much of Victorian design. Inventive, creative, the birth of the machine age unleashed a wave of design, and the Victorians built an art college in every major English town to act as a seedbed for creative and revolutionary thinking. Whilst industrialists powered on devising more and more impressive production lines and mass producing items for a new consumer market (factory workers wages were initially three time the earning of agricultural workers, moving population from the land to the new cities) the revolutionaries such as Mackintosh and Morris exploited design processes to create a new aesthetic.

    Standen, outside East Grinstead in Sussex is one of the finest examples of the merging of the inventive industrial processes with the respect for the past and understanding of materials that typify the best of Victorian Design. The new Morris &Co ranges were appropriately launched at Standen with an exhibition that blurred the lines between then and now. Still under restoration by the UK’s National Trust, Standen was a collaboration between architect Philip Webb and the Morris factory. A close friend of Morris who he worked alongside in the same architects practise for a while, Webb worked with Morris setting up Morris & Co. and designed many items associated with the Morris works.

    Standen was a product of Webb’s architectural practise and he worked with Morris to produce a harmonious and stunning home for the Beale family. Initially the site was occupied by a 14th century farmhouse and Webb incorporated the structure into his design. As one approaches the house it is the 14th century building and a barn that dominate the view, but from the gardens at the rear the full beauty of the building becomes apparent.

    The control of proportion , the sensitivity of scale makes the house sit at ease in the landscape. Comparing it with contemporary houses is like comparing Imperial and A size paper. Imperial sizes based on the human form and the golden section are easy to use in composition when drawing and lend themselves to a degree of aesthetic sub-division missing in the Intellectually created A sizes. These are a logical progression where the long side of one size makes the short side of the next size up.Emotion versus intellect. Humanity versus logic.

    Travelodge Exchanges On 22 Hotels & Opens a New Hotel with Topshop

    Travelodge has recently announced that it has exchanged on 22 new hotels (2,198 rooms) across the UK at a combined investment value of £165 million. As part of its new hotel exchange update, Travelodge is delighted to announce its new partnership with Arcadia Group Ltd, the UK’s largest privately owned clothing retailer. Under this new scheme, Arcadia Group Ltd will forward fund the construction of a 96-room Travelodge hotel, above its Topshop store; in Edinburgh’s retail heartland – Princes Street.

    The famous grade ll listed building which houses Edinburgh’s largest Topshop store and the forthcoming new Travelodge hotel was Scotland’s very first steel frame building. The development is scheduled to open in summer 2012 and Travelodge has agreed a 35 year lease with Arcadia Group Ltd, which represents a £10 million investment. This new addition will increase Travelodge’s room stock to 1,230 rooms and 13 hotels in the Scottish capital – maintaining its title of Edinburgh’s largest hotelier.

    Some of the other locations from the exchange announcement include: five London sites: Walthamstow, Enfield, Bethnal Green, Sutton and Southgate. As well as: Edinburgh Queen Street, Eastleigh, Loughborough, Sittingbourne, Bedford, Gatwick Airport, Darlington, Altrincham, Malvern, Aylesbury, Newquay, Woking, Glasgow Airport, Hemel Hempstead, Kings Lynn and Barcelona.

    In addition, the Company has opened 18 hotels in the first half of 2011 and is currently building 43 hotels (4,280 rooms). Twenty one of these properties are anticipated to open before the end of this year.

    Upon construction, these new sites will boost the Company’s estate to 540 hotels and 39,957 rooms. These new hotel openings will also create 1,300 new jobs across the country.

    This year Travelodge will also open five hotels in London and six just before the start of the Olympic Games in 2012. These openings will strengthen Travelodge’s position as the Capital’s biggest hotelier.

    On the 16th September 2011, employees from Hill Cross Furniture are taking a three day coast-to-coast cycle ride to raise funds for ATAXIA UK.The ride starts at St Bees Head and finishes at Robin Hoods Bay, a distance of approximately 190 miles.

    The ride itself is an extremely tough one – so we would like you to dig deep to make the pain worthwhile!

    Ataxia is a type of genetic neurological condition that affects balance, speech and co-ordination. Ataxia is progressive, meaning it gets worse with time until some people become entirely dependent on others for all their needs. Over 10,000 people in the UK have some form of Ataxia and currently there is no cure. In the last five years, the charity has spent over £3 million on research into possible treatments and cures.

    IHG Opens First Holiday Inn Hotel in Colombia

    IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) has recently announced the opening of the Holiday Inn Bogota-Airport in Bogota, Colombia. It is IHG’s sixth property in the country, across four brands – InterContinental® Hotels & Resorts, Crowne Plaza® Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn® Hotels and Resorts and Holiday Inn Express®. The new-build, eight-story Holiday Inn Bogota-Airport features 191 rooms and is located within ten minutes of El Dorado International Airport. Situated within the vibrant neighborhood of El Salitre, one of Bogota’s most important and modern business districts, the property is part of a mixed-use complex called Centro Empresarial Arrecife (Arrecife Corporate Center) and near the Corferias Convention Center, the United States Embassy, Bogota’s main industrial park and downtown Bogota. The Holiday Inn Bogota-Airport, located at Avenida Calle 26 #69-D-91 in Bogota, is owned by Alianza Fiduciaria S.A., under a franchise agreement with a company in the InterContinental Hotels Group.     Travelodge Opens Its First Hotel at Birmingham Airport and Its 19th Hotel in the City

    On Friday 26th August, the Mayor of Solihull, Cllr Irene Chamberlain and David Winstanley, Operations Director for Birmingham Airport officially opened the £9.8 million Birmingham Airport Travelodge hotel. Situated overlooking the runway on Terminal Road, the new 200 – room property is the Company’s first hotel at Birmingham Airport and the 19th Travelodge hotel in Birmingham – maintaining the budget hotel chain’s position as the biggest hotelier in the city. This new hotel opening has created 30 new jobs within the community.

    Birmingham Airport Travelodge offers a range of rooms which includes, family, double and accessible rooms. All Travelodge rooms come with a luxury Hypnos king size bed, which has a royal warrant from the Queen. Each room has en-suite facilities with eco-friendly showers, a flat screen TV with 18 free digital channels, free tea and coffee making facilities and Wi-Fi.

    The hotel also has a Bar Café which offers a breakfast, dinner and bar service.

    To celebrate the official opening of Travelodge’s 477th hotel in Birmingham, Cllr Irene Chamberlain cut the ribbon and officially declared the hotel open for business at an opening ceremony. She also met the hotel team and took a tour of the 200-bed hotel.

    In recognition of the 35,000 travellers that pass daily through Birmingham Airport, from destinations such as France, Spain, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Germany, Poland, Dubai, Pakistan and Iran – Travelodge staff have been trained to say Hello, welcome to Travelodge” in ten languages – so that they can greet international guests in their native tongue.

    Travelodge has invested £26.5 million in Birmingham during 2011 with the opening of four hotels. By the end of the year the hotel chain will have 21 hotels across Birmingham and have created 100 jobs.

    Crowne Plaza Albuquerque to Open after a $14 Million Renovation and Brand Change

    Continuing Expansion: Leonardo Hotels opens its first Hotel in Budapest

Since mid-August Leonardo Hotels has been managing the first Leonardo Hotel on Hungarian soil, the Leonardo Hotel Budapest (formerly Ramada Hotel Budapest). “Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in the world”, explains Daniel Roger, General Manager of Leonardo Hotels Europe.

    The 4-star Leonardo Hotel Budapest is located only a 15 minute walk from the city centre and just a few minutes from the Danube and is part of the blooming business district Ferencváro.     PAI Group – Marriott Hotel Swansea – Enhancing the guest experience

    Vaughan Sound Installations, (part of the PAI Group) in conjunction with Charnic Interiors, were instructed to complete the lighting, sound and audio visual needs for the refurbishment of the prestigious Gower Suite in the 4 star Marriott Hotel, Swansea SA1.Client Overview
    The Gower Suite is the Marriott Hotel Swansea’s premier function room. With its own conservatory bar and seating for up to 300 guests, this is an ideal location for meetings, conferences & weddings. The suite offers superb facilities, conveniently splits into three smaller function rooms and would provide the perfect atmosphere for any event. The hotel itself is located in the picturesque Marina.

    Anthony Brunton, Chief Engineer for the Hotel was “delighted with the flexibility of the Multimedia Presentation systems and the intuitiveness of the AMX control interface… Even the most non technical staff will have no trouble in setting up the Function Suites for any occasion.”

    Technical Solutions
    Vaughan Sound was appointed to replace and update the sound and lighting control systems in The Gower Suite. The new installations were able to utilise the existing cabling and this helped to minimise the costs. The TOA M9000 digital mixer was installed to provide comprehensive, user friendly control of the numerous inputs in the suite. In addition TOA ceiling loudspeakers powered by a Cloud multichannel amplifier provide even coverage for the wide range of events that take place.

    For the lighting system, the Anytronics Anylight control system provided control of the numerous circuits via outstations located throughout the suite. Dimming packs, to assist with energy saving, were also installed for the existing fittings together with the digital dimming of the newly installed fluorescent fittings. This gave control over the selection of lighting scenes to suit the mood of the event.

    To work with the flexibility of the Gower Suite, Vaughan Sound Installations installed each partitioned area with projectors, retractable electric screens, six button control systems & Laptop/DVD connection points that can be operated on a standalone basis when the suite is split or utilised as one larger venue as required.

    All local input connection points were cabled to a matrix system within The Manager’s Office enabling the display media to be delivered to any screen or combination of screens as required allowing each partitioned room to operate independently. A particularly useful feature when used in full room mode; the two outer screens will display one presentation with different media displayed to the centre screen.

    Outcome
    The end solution is the cost effective control of the ideal sound and lighting solutions for the function suite with
    lighting and AV systems that offer flexibility and ease of use.
