Hotel La Tour, new designs from Nest

James Baker of ‘Nest’ has been appointed to design bedroom case goods for the new Hotel chain La Tour. The first Hotel of the chain is a 174 bedroom, new build in Birmingham and is scheduled to open early 2012. The 3 room grades will offer 4 star accommodations and the overall look is to be sleek, modern and understated.

The Process
“An interesting project; any wiring within the room has to come down from the ceiling. This does of course present problems for design, manufacture and fitting alike. Because I have direct experience in all three of these areas, I can ensure that a design brief is met, that furniture can be manufactured and also installed, all within the budget set by the client. A room price was set and the designs came well within it. ” James Baker.

A complete, pre tender, room Matrix was then drawn up with all furniture and room variations accounted for.

Post design the project matrix, with complete drawings, was issued to ‘Nest’s manufacturing portfolio, for tendering. Fifteen plus quotations were received, these quotes were filtered and a presentation made to La Tour, giving informed and impartial advice on who and where the contract could be manufactured.

Learning Experience
Nest are currently putting out to tender interior manufacture and fit-out for a chain of national high street ‘education centres’.

“We are currently waiting on the first fit-out, but so far we have been able to reduce prices from previous suppliers and are looking forward to starting the first fit-out, of a national program. This is a great example of connecting client to manufacturer, with the obvious cost benefits coming in!”

When the hotel start to consider room designs, it is fairly crucial that the styling fits well into the period building and the exquisite location. “Bringing the outside in” was one way that General Manager, Alan Campbell, described the brief for a newly commissioned sample room for the Hotel. The room was manufactured by local furniture makers O’Donnell Furniture, designs by James Baker.

“For me bringing the outside in was the key. The styling had to be relatively classic, to keep in with the period interior of the hotel and buildings, but with a contemporary twist. Choosing the materials was crucial, the final decision being European walnut with highlighted details in Wenge. It is always too easy to go for the ‘American Walnut’ option, something different was needed and the more natural, subtle colours of the European Walnut fitted perfectly with the amazing views that you get from all the bedrooms”. James Baker.

BIG LIGHTS Range Just Got Bigger!

Following the introduction of a new range of BIG LIGHTS pendant luminaires with shades in various designs, Baulmann Leuchten is now introducing matching floorlamps and tablelamps for this new product family. Luminati Send Strong IP Message to the Display Sector

ACID (Anti Copying in Design) members Luminati Waycon trade under the name of Luminati, a recognised brand in the supply of engineered display solutions, supplying a vast range of display products. Like most companies in the 21st century, their website is one of their key means of marketing, being the main showcase of their products. Recently they have found many competitors copying the distinct look and text of their website which has proved to be an important selling tool. One of the key product ranges marketed through Luminati’s website is its acrylic photo frames. The company had found that the website advertising of this product had been highly successful. Luminati recently discovered that one of their competitors had copied the literary text and layout of the webpage advertising the company’s acrylic photo frames. A letter before action was sent by ACID Accredited law firm McDaniel & Co. alleging copyright infringement. Following receipt of this letter the company concerned spoke with Luminati and agreed to remedy the infringement and pay Luminati’s legal costs.

Dids Macdonald, ACID’s CEO said, “Increasingly ACID members are finding that sending a strong letter before action can achieve the right results. Taking legal action does not mean going all the way to Court and in this instance Luminati is sending a clear message not only to the sector but to this particular competitor that they are not going to tolerate any IP infringement now or in the future.”

Luminati’s Managing Director, Steve Senior said, “In this particular sector most of the key players know one another and there is no room for those who seek the fast track to market by producing look alike web pages appearing to trade off our brand identity. The way in which this was discovered was a fantastic new free service called Copyscape. By entering our own web text a result came back which confirmed that the majority of the text had been slavishly copied. Luminati’s case was further compounded by a time stamped snapshot taken of their website by hosting company ICO3 who keep permanent incremental backups of their clients websites over several years. Our brand protection policy takes priority and we will always be assertive in pursuing any intellectual property infringement.” www.copyscape.com

Contra Curtains supplies new base2stay Liverpool

Contra Curtains Ltd have recently completed the supply of soft furnishings to 106 bedrooms at the latest Base2stay property in Liverpool. The 1850’s industrial building in the Ropewalks area in the centre of Liverpool, with a wide variety of window sizes, floor heights and room types, provided many challenges.Contra supplied lined & interlined Wave curtains to the majority of the hotel bedrooms, in a linen union fabric selected by interior decorator Clarissa Nadler. Other rooms received Roman Blinds & privacy blinds where required. On the ground floor 9 Gallery Studio rooms received Pinch Pleat Lined curtains operating on Silent Gliss electric track systems. These stunning rooms have ceiling heights of approximately 4.6 metres and incorporate an upper gallery sleeping and dressing area. In addition, rooms within the historic roof beams required a purpose built solution for blackout blinds to the large roof-light windows.

Working in conjunction with project coordinator Dorian Dreyfus of DC Place and the base2stay management team Contra provided expertise and advice from an early stage in the project.

Having ascertained our client’s requirements Contra project manager Chris Wicks liaised with the project team and ensured that the client’s vision was delivered on time and within budget. The hotel opened ahead of program at the end of July.

Halesowen-based, A & H Construction & Development, were appointed by the park to build the new 150-bedroom hotel, which is scheduled to open summer 2011.

IDA Young Commercial Designer of the Year Competition @ ScotHot 2011

ScotHot 2011 has announced the launch of the first ever IDA Young Commercial Designer of the Year Competition in association with the British Contract Furnishing Association (BCFA) and the Interior Design Association (IDA). The winner will not only be awarded the prestigious title but will also have their design built in the BCFA Interiors and Design Pavilion @ ScotHot 2011 giving them the opportunity to showcase their work in front of more than 8,000 hospitality professionals and buyers, as well as the panel of judges, comprising a team of industry experts. Also up for grabs is a £1,000 cash prize.

The challenge for entrants is to design a 6m x 4m bedroom, including en-suite bathroom, for a four or five star refurbished boutique hotel. Maximum budget for the design is £25,000 and with sustainability a key focus for ScotHot 2011, designers must take in to account origin and air miles of their materials but keep full product lifecycle sustainability the most important factor. Points will be awarded to those who use UK suppliers and no products are to be sourced from outside Europe.

Entrants must be under 30 years old and detail all aspects of the room design including technology, surfaces, fabrics, and furniture, with specific emphasis on how the room design enhances the guest’s overall enjoyment of their stay and how they meet the sustainability criteria.

The panel of judges features some of the country’s top designers including Colin Watson of the Interior Design Association, Kate Mooney of Occa Design, Stephan Oberwegner of Max Bentheim, Jim Hamilton of Graven Images and Ronnie Burns of Burns Interior Design along with industry experts such as Kiki Max of Wyndham Hotels. Two highly commended candidates will also have the opportunity to mount their designs in the BCFA Interiors and Design Pavilion @ ScotHot 2011.

ScotHot is Scotland’s only hospitality interiors, tourism and catering event and attracts over 8,000 trade only professionals at the SECC in Glasgow ranging from hotels, restaurants, clubs, bars, schools, colleges and universities. With over 175,000 people employed in hotels and restaurants and 16m tourists a year, hospitality is one of Scotland’s key industries. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of leading professionals representing this very vibrant and dynamic sector.

Hotel prosecuted for fire safety breaches

“A hotel and its general manager have been ordered to pay out more than £40,000 in fines and costs after a blaze led to the discovery of numerous fire safety failures at the premises. Park Hotel Limited and its manager, Ashwin Ratan, pleaded guilty to ten offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, in a prosecution mounted by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.The court heard that the problems at The Park Hotel – a bed and breakfast housed in a Victorian-styled building in Leicester city centre – came to light following a fire in August 2009. It was found that no one employed by the hotel initiated a formal evacuation procedure when the fire alarm sounded, but rather residents had to evacuate themselves informally. Given the extensive smoke logging, this could have been extremely serious and resulted in serious injury or death to a number of residents.

In addition, the fire alarm could not be heard in the basement area of the premises, where the on-site staff lived.

They were unaware of the fire until one of the residents went down to the basement to warn them. It was also established that, on the evening of the fire, the general manager had decided it was not necessary to have a night porter on duty between the hours of midnight and 7am – a decision that was taken in order to cut costs.

A post-fire inspection of the premises revealed other failures, including: the fire risk assessment was inadequate; none of the fire doors in the building were fitted with intumescent strips or cold smoke seals, and some were wedged open; and a number of the wooden steps to the rear fire escape were either loose or partially rotten in places.

Park Hotel Limited was fined £29,715 with £8,000 costs, while Mr Ratan was fined £2,985 with £380 costs.”

Hotel owners should be aware that there this case is part of a recent increase in activity by Fire Brigades seeking prosecutions under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

One of the largest fines to date went to The Co-operative Group for what a judge described as ‘a lamentable approach to Fire Safety’ at its Hampshire stores. The fine including costs totalled £210,000 for a total of six breaches of fire safety law, including locked Fire Exit doors.

Elsewhere a Chinese Restaurant in Tadworth was fined £26,000 plus £13,000, whilst Chalk Lane Hotel in Surrey was fined £20,000 including costs. In both cases inadequate fire risk assessment were listed as common failures.

Legal note

From 6 April 2010 all employers have a statutory duty to consider the capability of worker(s) who carry out tasks or assignments related to fire safety under the Fire Safety (Employees’ Capabilities) (England) Regulations 2010.

This is in addition to employers’ general duties to carry out health and safety risk assessments and fire safety risk assessments, and to review them regularly. An assessment of capability should already be an implicit part of those risk assessments, so the new regulations only serve to make it explicit in relation to fire safety.

Employers need to be aware that using their own trained but unqualified staff may be adequate for very basic premises; more complex premises should be assessed by qualified Fire Engineers. Many Risk Assessments are carried out by retired Fire Service personal and employers assume that these individuals are suitably qualified. However, it is often the case that they have only ever worked as operational fire-fighters and are not qualified in Fire Safety Engineering, nor are they up to date with Current Building Regulations.

In order to comply we would recommend that anyone you employ is suitably qualified in both surveying and fire safety measures.

Miniview: Apollo Hotel Bratislava

Noel Cowards ‘Brief Encounter’ was set on a railway platform in which a couple waiting for different trains fall for one another. Returning to Bratislava after a six year absence rekindles affections in another brief encounter. We left Kitzbühel to drive the 300 miles to Bratislava on a morning with glorious sunshine, in sharp contrast to the Austrian monsoon we had been enjoying. The first half of the journey was through the valleys along minor roads, before switching to motorways for some fast cruising; all relatively trouble free until we arrived in Bratislava.

I last was here some 6 years ago to review Rezidor’s Carlton in the centre of the old town, and again drove here. This time we chose an hotel in the suburbs not to Review, but just as a night stop on our way to the High Tatra mountains on the border between Slovakia and Poland. The changes apparent in Bratislava on arriving in the city, and on the road out eastwards, are stunning.

First of all there is a new motorway, not on my three year old satnav. Not only that but a new set of inner roads lined with car dealerships, stores etc. showing the increased affluence now evident in this, one of the newest European capitals. The area the hotel is in is primarily residential, with street cafes and bars speaking of the adoption of a relaxed European lifestyle that on my previous visit I thought would take 15 years to take root here after years of totalitarian rule. This small country has transformed itself in six.

Sleepotel returns to The Sleep Event

The Sleep Event exhibition will house the successful Sleepotel which was launched last year with great results. The Sleepotel creates a virtual live hotel experience where leading designers, architects, suppliers and operators from around the world collaborate to bring the very latest in design concepts to life. This year the area has developed to showcase a reception, bar, restrooms and a selection of imaginatively designed bedrooms. MKV Design will use their interior design experience in the international hospitality sector to design a room within the Sleepotel.

More room concepts will be added to the Sleepotel during the next few months, creating an original design-led hotel experience that will provide inspiration and industry insight for all visitors.

The Sleep Event 2010, Europe’s only event dedicated to hotel design, development and architecture returns to the Business Design Centre, London from 24-25 November. As in previous years, the event incorporates a top level two day conference and the highly prestigious European Hotel Design Awards.

CS Contract Furniture Provides Specialist Products for Retirement Homes

CS understands the specific requirements for retirement homes and has recently supplied furniture to a new build Extra Care development for Hanover Housing Association. Claude Hooper Interiors designed and installed the communal areas, including the Lounge, Restaurant, Reception, Hair Salon, Treatment Room and Activities room at Ash Lea Court in Bristol. The project delivered design-led, quality furniture products for a comfortable and relaxed ambience with the feeling of a quality hotel, rather than an institutional atmosphere. The furniture products incorporated a variety of different fabric colours and textures to create a warm and inviting environment. Practical considerations were also recognised by CS; products featured suitable seat heights, antibacterial and scratch resistant surfaces for long term durability.

Room for design with wood and glass

HAWA-Concepta 25/30/50 is a future-oriented system for wood and glass doors that does without a bottom guide channel and enables ideal and flexible room utilisation.
Cabinetmakers and interior designers use it to fulfil specific customer requirements as design options with this hardware system are virtually unlimited. Travelodge Summer Recruitment Drive Boosted After 140 Jobs Created From Acquisition of 52 New Hotels

Travelodge, the UK’s fastest growing budget hotel chain, today announced the imminent recruitment of 140 staff across the country due to its recent acquisition of 52 Innkeeper’s Lodges (the 52 locations are listed in a table below). This acquisition is the UK hotel sector’s largest transaction since 2008 and Travelodge is now recruiting for the below positions nationwide:

• 40 hotel managers
• 100 entry level staff (receptionists, guest room cleaners and night porters)

All successful candidates will undertake a comprehensive four-week training programme and be trained on sleep matters so that they are fully equipped to ensure Travelodge customers get a good night’s sleep. All of Travelodge’s employees have undergone a ‘Sleep Tight’ customer training programme in line with the budget chains internal Sleep Manifesto. This includes staff training on sleep matters, new noise abatement policies and re-organised delivery times at hotels to ensure minimum sleep interruption for all customers.

For ambitious individuals who are keen to climb the careers ladder, Travelodge offers plenty of opportunities to succeed within the hotel industry. Listed below are two initiatives Travelodge has launched to help its staff progress within the company.

The Fast Track to Management Programme – This is a 12-week programme that effectively fast tracks staff to hotel management. Being integrated in a slim metall-profile, a flexible LED-strip provides interesting lighting effects and reduces visible technical components to a maximum.In the standard version, the luminaire is available as a table-lamp with a diameter of approx. 500 mm and as a wall-/ or ceiling-mounted luminaire with a diameter of approx. 700 mm. The finish of the housing can be either nickel polished or dark-bronzed.

IDEAL Marble and Granite celebrate 10 years working at the 5 star Chester Grosvenor and Spa Hotel.

IDEAL are currently half way through the final phase of a 10 year programme to provide new marble flooring to the bathrooms and lobbies of one the finest Hotels in the UK. Their roll out of 70 rooms is on schedule and due for completion January 2011.IDEAL have been supplying and installing marble to the main Suite rooms when the hotel is in its quieter periods in January and February. They have also carried out projects in the new Michelin Star Simon Radley Restaurant, the Spa area and Eaton and Venetian Suite within the Hotel.

Managing Director, Derek Burt says ‘The standards of workmanship required at The Chester Grosvenor are very high, but we do set ourselves very high standards so that’s why the relationship works well. We are carrying out the work to the current phase with no other trades involved apart from the Hotels own maintenance staff so the cost for the hotel is as low as possible and the results are excellent. The main challenge here is that the building is very old and timber framed with timber floors. This can cause movement in solid floor finishes and we have to use all of our many years of experience to deal with the situation properly.’

IHG announces sale of InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta

InterContinental Hotels Group PLC announces the sale of the 422 room InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta to Maryland based Pebblebrook Hotel Trust for US$105 million in cash. IHG will continue to manage the hotel under a long term management contract. IHG opened the hotel in November 2004 as the first newly built luxury hotel to enter the Buckhead market for over a decade (see this article published in November 2004). The hotel generated revenues of US$30.6m, EBITDA of $9.4m and EBIT of $6.7m in 2009 and had a net book value of US$82.7m at 31 March 2010. Pebblebrook will invest approximately $7m in capital improvements.

The sale is a continuation of IHG’s strategy of growing its management and franchise businesses and reducing capital intensity. Since 2003 IHG has disposed of 185 hotels globally with a combined net book value of $5.3bn and with proceeds in excess of net book value.

Richard Solomons, Chief Financial Officer and Head of Commercial Development, said: “The sale of the InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta is a great example of our asset strategy in action. We built the hotel using our own capital in 2004 to create a showcase for the brand in order to drive growth across the Americas. Since then we have signed 21 InterContinental hotels in the region. We are now able to recycle the capital we have invested in the building whilst maintaining a long term management contract with a great partner, reinforcing the strength of the brand.”

Recently completed at Monk Furniture are the latest two Independent Hotel orders won by the company – Shakespeare Hotel, London and Marsham Court Hotel, Bournemouth.Shakespeare Hotel is a bespoke American White Oak collection of furniture which provides individual pieces for specific rooms and full room sets. This is the second order from this client who is working with Monk on a phased refurbishment plan for his hotel.

The 14 rooms at Marsham Court Hotel are again totally bespoke to the clients specification – Monk having created the full designs, technical drawings and manufacturing plans from meetings and discussions with the owner. Being manufactured in American White Ash Monk will also be carrying out the installation of all the furniture at this location with its own fully trained team.

Purl Cocktail Bar, Marylebone, London

Stylematters have recently completed the design, manufacture and installation of fixed seating for Purl cocktail bar in Marylebone, London which was awarded five stars by Time Out London.Echoing the prohibition styling keys, Stylematters provided six booths with fitted corner table tops that make best use of the space available. Two booths were installed upstairs and were finished in a mossy green coloured fabric to match the low level lighting backdrop, whilst four booths in a putty coloured fabric were utilised downstairs. All fixed seating was complemented by Golden Oak plinths and feature diamond button back detail throughout.

The style of seating was an ideal furniture partner for the brown leather Chesterfields, dark wood panelling, retro phone booth and the myriad of alcoves.

And for the clientele, being served cocktails inspired by the golden age of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century bartending, using handmade bitters and premium spirits, and being surrounded by sassy Speakeasy style, is a great way to relax and unwind from the hustle and bustle of the day.

Pure elegance, upstanding and light. GATE simply cannot be ignored within the context of interior design: a fireplace of decidedly elegant proportions. So where does this remarkable lightness stem from? The combustion chamber is suspended to float in the matt, anthracite-coated steel surround. Noticeably large vertical glass panes and the brightly gleaming accents of the handles and levers in matt brushed stainless steel provide a contrast in the drama played out between materials and colours.

Of course, where to store the fuel for burning is part of the architectural living room concept for this fireplace. Fiercely blazing, steady and yet quite free. Anyone who values variety and is looking for all-over warmth will simply love the independent heat it radiates. As it rolls, ROLL easily balances its stainless steel tank, mounted on its roller bearings. The two glass panes fitted at the sides render it completely transparent. As it is held in place by magnets, when the tank is being filled with bio-ethanol the glass is lifted off in no time at all.

However, that’s not all ROLL can do: with its wall bracket (optionally available), wall mounting is a simple matter. Alternatively, the bracket can be used to secure the fire to the floor – for those who want to see their ROLL fire with rather less of a life of its own.

Simple Ways to ‘green’ your Hotel

Or Could interlined curtains save the world?

The architectural press is full of lengthy articles on making buildings more environmentally friendly. US LEED certification or the UK’s BREEAM standards – both acronyms for the evaluation of your hotels standing environmentally – is the standard for new buildings. How though can you reduce your carbon footprint and at the same time add money to your bottom line by reducing your energy and other bills?

There are incentives/penalties from government for you too – see our articles at CRC Scheme and Hotel groups reactions. In essence the scheme (as I understand it) takes your groups energy consumption in 2008 as a baseline and taxes you on consumption over that level or rewards you for saving over that level.

So how can you save money by saving the planet? Here are some suggestions that you may find surprising in their simplicity:
Firstly bring back curtains .Sometimes, something you have always known, is brought back to your attention by an unexpected event, and this was brought to my attention as a result of an incident in the Curtain Girls factory. It showed just how effective interlined curtains are in reducing heat loss through glass; be it single glazed (listed buildings), secondary glazing or the latest sealed glazing unit.

It was brought home with a bang when the large forced air blower in the Curtain Girls workroom had its annual service in the autumn. A new company did the service and despite 14 years of problem free use it was found that the gas supply was not man enough for the heater. A new meter was recommended and the gas supply company contacted. The Flanders & Swann song ‘The gas man cometh’ was written just for this – Curtain Girls waited from the end of October until 6th January, through one of the coldest spells of weather for many years.

The workroom is an amalgamation of two buildings with an opening of nearly 15 meters wide, so the first action was to concentrate the workspace into an area that could be heated with a secondary system of portable heaters. To contain the heat staff made an enormous curtain to run across the opening. Coloured FR lining was used for the face, an interlining made using left over’s from various hotel projects and, in an extravagant gesture, it was all lined by using a synthetic dim-out imported from Germany.

The resulting temperature difference was truly amazing with 22ºC on the workroom side and 5ºC on the ‘mothballed’ side. One visitor had to keep going from side to side just to check the ‘fridge’ effect. Jane Fiddian also had a lot of fun with a laser thermometer; checking the surface temperature of the glass outside the building before and after drawing back the curtains, regularly finding differences of 10ºC or more.

Energy consultants asked for proven figures for lining & interlining ( R values or U values) may come up with figures but this pragmatic test shows in startling fashion how we have missed a trick in the schemes to insulate our hotels. When consultants talk of insulation it is of loft and wall insulation but repeatedly infra-red images show most heat loss is through windows. Old fashion lined and interlined curtains obviously make a very effective thermal barrier.

Jestico + Whiles start work on the Aloft London ExCeL Hotel

Work has started on site of the Aloft London ExCeL, a sleek new hotel at ExCeL in London’s Docklands. Designed by architects Jestico + Whiles,resposible for the interors of Andels Lodz the hotel is scheduled to open at the end of 2011, in readiness for the London Olympics. The project is being developed by ExCeL London’s parent company, Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) in partnership with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. Created to shake up the staid, traditional select service segment of the hotel industry, Aloft delivers urban-influenced, open and vibrant design and a social guest experience at an affordable price. Aloft London ExCeL will mark the brand’s UK debut and will be the second Aloft property in Europe following the Aloft Brussels Schuman, scheduled to open this Autumn.
Jestico + Whiles’ innovative design provides 252 guest bedrooms of different sizes, front of house areas including triple height entrance hall, bar, lounge, meeting rooms and fitness suite, back of house areas with offices, and a separate bar and restaurant which will spill out onto a new pedestrian piazza. The scheme is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and employs highly insulated façades, CHP and ground source heat pump technology.

Unfortunately the practice was unable to supply any images of the interiors so we can only show you the usual exterior rendering which tell us little about any of the qualities this may have as an hotel.

The building is formed of three elements: a central ‘spine’ contains bedrooms and vertical circulation and is flanked by two crescents which house further bedrooms and gently curving corridors. The ‘serpentine’ form of the building helps to define external spaces and is also driven by a number of restrictions on construction allied to the clients’ requirements in terms of guestroom types and mix. The primary constraints include a strategic services corridor running across the site and the flight operation demands of the nearby London City Airport.

The hotel will be clad in several thousand coloured, textured stainless-steel shingles. The glazed façades will feature a large-scale screen-printed pattern, inspired by the illusion of depth seen in some of Bridget Riley’s paintings. The material will reflect the sunshine, adding warmth and liveliness to the building’s exterior spaces.

The building’s form has generated varying facades, some concave, others convex. The elevational design represents a response against the ubiquitous ‘punched window’ aesthetic of the generic hotel façade. Flush windows on the convex central spine therefore disappear into the homogenous ‘wallpaper’ of the screen printed glazed façade. Windows in the stainless steel clad concave crescent wings are united into a series of vertical slots. This gives the building a rhythm which differentiates the elements and enhances the experience of passers by.

John Whiles, Director of Jestico + Whiles said: “The start on site of Aloft London ExCeL is an exciting moment for the practice. The Aloft hotel will enhance the visual identity of the area and importantly bring much needed additional visitor accommodation to Docklands.

“We are now working on two Starwood Hotels & Resorts branded properties in the capital, with the W London-Leicester Square also nearing completion.”

Located at ExCeL’s Eastern entrance at the Royal Victoria Dock the hotel will have a direct access to Prince Regent Station on the Docklands Light Railway and London’s first International Convention Centre.

New bathroom mirrors based on LED from Baulmann Leuchten

Baulmann Leuchten, a market leader for bathroom lighting products, is now introducing the first illuminated bathroom mirror based only on LED-technology. The frame of this new mirror is made completely from polished stainless steel. As a standard in the Baulmann bathroom range, the product has a protection rating of IP44, which makes it suitable for the use in bathrooms and wet locations. The warm-white LED is integrated behind the opal diffusor to provide an all-over glare free illumination.

Besides the standard size of 840 x 1200 mm (with a height of only 30 mm!) this mirror can be produced to almost every individual size thanks to the flexibility of the integrated LED.

Contra Curtains installs furnishings in Le Meridien

Contra Curtains Ltd successfully completed the manufacture and installation of soft furnishings to 172 guest bedrooms at Le Meridien Piccadilly Hotel, London.Contra supplied curtains, sheers, upholstered pelmets and cushions to all refurbished bedrooms.

The refurbishment began in January 2010 and involved highly intensive phases completed over a short timescale.

Liaising with project contractors GCM Ltd, project manager Chris Wicks ensured that Contra delivered a high quality product throughout the hotel.

Interior designer, Anita Rosato said: “Contra were highly organised in scheduling and delivering curtains for 172 rooms all of varying sizes and on a fast track rolling programme. They were keen to assist in every way possible to complete the job on time in budget and to a level of quality expected for a prestige hotel such as this. Thanks Chris for helping to make the job run smoothly!”

Swanky products from FW Lighting

FW Lighting brings a new range of architectural and commercial lighting products to UK designers from its Polish manufacturing partner, Organic.

The first, Swanky, is one of 25 new creations to be launched for 2010 here in the UK. Designed initially for the hotel sector, Swanky is now finding new avenues of use in the restaurant, leisure and retail markets. These pictures are from the 121 roomed Monopol Hotel in Wroclaw, Poland. Swanky is a suspended light fixture manufactured from Fibreglass, Orgilex and Dibond and is available in red, blue or white finishes with personalised colour options available on request.

Organic are pioneers in the use of existing and new materials such as Orgilex. Conceptualized and put into production by Organic, Orgilex is first chemically treated and then hand finished creating this new and flexible light diffusing medium.

Swanky is a versatile suspended light fixture capable of accommodating 50w halogen AR111 lamps or CDM R111 metal halide lamps. Further illumination effects (as seen through the stylish Dibond supporting structure) are created by the introduction of six single coloured PowerLEDs available in red, green, blue, amber, warm white or neutral white.

New entrance canopy for The Rubens

The architectural metalwork department at Andy Thornton Ltd has recently completed the installation of a stunning new entrance canopy at The Rubens at the Palace, a Red Carnation Hotel in central London. Located on Buckingham Palace Road, only yards from the palace and just a short walk from Westminster Abbey, the majestic hotel, built in 1911, now has a grand entrance to match its four-star luxury status.The design brief from the hotel group’s Estates Manager Brian Brennan to Alan Soutar of LCE Architects, who worked closely with Andy Thornton on the project, was simply to replace the existing tired and rather incongruous 1960’s structure with a canopy more befitting the period of the building and its fine facade. Mr Brennan had seen a canopy he liked during a trip to Paris and was keen to commission something similar.

The resulting elliptical shaped canopy is manufactured in mild steel and aluminium and features laminated glass panels dropped into a convex metal frame, with a decorative crown and laser-cut gold-leafed name lettering. The structure has been finished in a weather-resistant epoxy powder-coat.

The complete structure was fabricated in the Andy Thornton workshops in West Yorkshire before being dismantled and transported to site for installation. The cantilevered canopy was secured to a concealed beam and hung from two wall-mounted tension rods.

Due to the hotel’s location, the canopy had to be installed with minimal disruption to guests, tourists and traffic. Despite having to work behind a restrictive wooden hoarding, the fixing team managed to install the complete structure within the two-week allocation.

Now that the canopy has been unveiled, the reaction has been incredible. The hotel finally has an entrance to match its aristocratic grandeur and one befitting its perfect location in the heart of London’s tourist attractions.

Marina Bay Sands chooses Bartech’s Minibar Management System

The recently opened, architecturally-stunning business, leisure and entertainment destination, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, has chosen Bartech to install automated Minibars in all of its 2,561 rooms and suites.Bartech was selected by Marina Bay Sands to allow operation of its mini-bar department in the most efficient way, ensuring the best service and quality for its guests, and make use of the unique energy saving system that is integrated in the Bartech Software. “Operating Minibars efficiently in 2,561 rooms spread over 3 towers and 55 stories requires the right tool, and Bartech offers that to Marina Bay Sands Management” said Jan Strijker, Managing Director of Bartech Asia Pacific. “We are also extremely proud to take part in this fantastic project in Singapore”.

With Bartech Automatic Mini-bars installed in hotels from 19 to 3,000 rooms in Asia Pacific, hotel operators increasingly recognize the many benefits Bartech has to offer.

The Bartech software automatically posts mini-bar charges to the room folio through an advanced interface with the hotel’s Property Management System resulting in loss reduction and accurate stock control. An automatic refill report provides in-room dining staff with the list of items to be refilled per mini-bar thus limiting the quantity of rooms to be controlled to those where products have been touched or consumed. This tremendously improves operating efficiency and leads to decreased labour costs.

Thanks to the automatic billing of charges, the hotel staff does not have to disturb guests to check whether they have had something from the mini-bar anymore. In case of a dispute, a short-cut further allows the Front desk staff to easily check the status of products inside the mini-bar in real-time resulting in optimal service quality and quicker check-outs.

Among other powerful features that assist in the reduction of operational costs and provides substantial energy savings, the C.E.S.S option (Computerized Energy Saving System) allows the hotel to set up cold production inside mini-bars according to room status (occupied, vacant, under maintenance) and time. All Bartech automatic mini-bars comply with WEEE, RoHS, ISO, CSA, FCC and UL certification requirements.

Already installed in some other large hotel casinos world-wide including Las Vegas Sands Corp.’s Venetian Resort Hotel Macau and the combined Venetian and Palazzo complex in Las Vegas, the Bartech system has a proven ability to manage sites with thousands of rooms with the greatest efficiency.

Cliq Designs is responding to increased demand for curtains with the launch of a comprehensive measure, manufacture and installation service for the hotels industry.The Preston based company has already successfully completed curtain projects for properties including the Scarlet Hotel at Mawgan Porth in Cornwall, the Park Inn Manchester and the Birmingham Marriott.

Cliq is now focusing this capability into a comprehensive offer that includes an on-site measuring service, support for design, fabric sourcing where required, sample and sample room production, manufacturing, and full installation including blinds, voiles and tracks where specified.

Rezidor at Fifty

Kurt Ritter and I are about the same age. In 1980, when I became head of Art & Design at a London College, he was appointed the general manager of at the SAS Kuwait hotel, the first overseas property of SAS International Hotels. SAS International was formed by the then Scandinavian Airline System backed by the governments of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. In 1984 Kurt Ritter became the Vice President Middle East for SIH in Singapore as I left teaching to become a hotel designer. As we aged our paths remained parallel, but they were eventually to cross, and I have come to admire and rate him, with Olga Polizzi and Barry Sternlicht, as one of the most important and influential industry figures. In 1989, when I was part of a team designing new hotels for Shire Hotels, Kurt Ritter was being appointed the President and CEO of SAS. The group was then not really on my radar, but Ritter was going to change all that.

In 1994, as Britain struggled with the aftermath of the stupidity of the Major government’s failed attempts to link sterling value to the new Euro, Ritter took the significant step of signing SIH’s then 20 hotels into a Master Franchise with Carlson, creating Radisson SAS Hotels & Resorts, adding the EMEA rights to Park Inn, Country Inn and Regent in 2002. In 2002 HotelDesigns was born as I left the practice of design to write about hotels full time, and to follow Ritter’s career with increasing interest and admiration.

I first met Mr. Ritter at the opening of the Radisson SAS (now Radisson Blu) in Krakow, Poland, in late 2003. The hotel was one of the first new builds in Krakow, and one of the first four star hotels too. At that time travel in Central Europe just over ten years after the collapse of the ‘Evil Empire’, as Ronald Regan called the communist system, was still a little bit of an adventure. However Ritter very early on saw the potential in Central Europe. Countries including the old East Germany (reunification in 1990) Poland (Third Polish Republic 1989) Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and recently Russia and Romania have become the focus of the expansion of the hotels.

CS products were specified to provide comfortable and smart seating for the hospitality areas. The Bremen chair was upholstered with a navy faux leather to complement the Worcester Warriors logo. A range of table designs were supplied with some bespoke elements to meet the specific needs of the club.

New family of LED reading lights from Baulmann Leuchten

Baulmann Leuchten, as a trendsetter in the market of LED lighting products, has recently introduced a new family of LED reading lights on the exhibition “Light & Building 2010” in Frankfurt, Germany. This new family comes up in two different designs with a “horizontal version” and a “vertical version”. Each version has a floorlamp and a tablelamp in a brushed stainless steel finish.

These floor- and tablelamps are acompanied by an adjustable wall-mounted version. For the future a pendant-luminaire in the same design is already under development.

These LED reading lights are equipped with the latest LED technology, using a special “flood-light LED” with an excellent colour rendering and a warmwhite colour temperature.

The floorlamp is using 1 x 3W LED while the table-lamp has 2 x 3W LED to provide a sufficient illumination for a writing desk.

Frank Hudson, the furniture maker, has opened a brand new store in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, UK.The new showroom has a wide range of furniture including items suited to both small projects and one off rooms.

The shop has end of line or returns of exclusive ranges for major high street retailers.

There are major savings to be had at the store, with up to 70 per cent off bedroom, dining and occasional pieces.

The stock moves very quickly and is continually replenished.

Stylematters reveals new stool and storage range

Baulmann Leuchten refurbish Hyatt

The Hyatt Regency Hotel Cologne, located directly at the Rhine-river with a beautiful view of the historic centre and the Dome, has now been fully refurbished with help from Baulmann Leuchten.After extensive renovations of the 288 rooms and the four Regency View Suites, the hotel proudly presents their new design, developed by the famous interior designers of Hirsch Bedner Associates.

Besides the fresh colour scheme of the rooms the interior designers have been paying special attention to high-quality materials, useful details and technical innovations.

These features have also been considered regarding the 2.000 pcs of bespoke luminaires, delivered by Baulmann Leuchten.

The rooms have been fitted out with dimmable Ceramic lamps with shades made of light-coloured Chintz, high-quality desk-lamps and special-made LED readings-lights with a 3W warm-white floodlight LED.

In the bathrooms two wall-mounted fittings have been installed to provide a soft and glare-free illumination all around the mirror.

IDP Design; Interior Designer

IDP Design has a design studio like no other. Nestled in the country in Surrey, UK, the employees work inside a converted barn. I visit managing director, Malcolm King, on a sunny day and as I sit down at the conference table I hear nothing but birds chirping outside. It’s all very relaxing and I ponder how it is possible to get any work done when it would be so easy to pass the days staring out at the green plains outside.However, Malcolm soon proves that he is dedicated to his work as he produces a long list of projects and talks about his latest in Barbados. IDP Design is currently fitting out the rooms for the Island Inn Hotel in Bidgetown, having previously completed the Mango Bay Hotel and Resort, an independent hotel on the island that has chosen to use the company’s room sets.

IDP Design specialises in room sets which can be bought by hotel groups as an easy solution to fitting out bedrooms. The benefits are that there are no design or procurement fees and there is a cost benefit from volume purchasing. At the moment there are two room sets available, one priced at £2,600 and the other at £3,650.

Considering that the sets include case goods, soft goods, carpet, decorative lighting and even artwork, these prices seem exceptionally reasonable. There is also no need for hotel groups to worry about another 100 hotels having the exact same room as them, as once 500 of the room sets are sold, IDP Design change the layout so that the design remains rare throughout the world.

All the room sets are bespoke and the mirrors, lighting, chairs and other items are custom designed. Fabrics used come from companies such as Sekers and Panaz. The target market for the rooms includes Holiday Inn at the lower end and InterContinental at the high end. All the sets apply with hotel standards and the designs are often popular with independent hotels as well.
