    Hand-Holds Enhance Appeal of Mondrian Upright Chairs

    Visitors to Sleep 2012 will be amongst the first in the international hospitality sector to view the extended Mondrian range of seating by Design at Knightsbridge. The latest additions to this distinctive collection include a series of upright chairs featuring integral hand-holds to ease chair positioning and avoid fabric wear and soiling.Ideal for restaurants, dining rooms and flexible conference facilities, the new Mondrian armed and armless chairs join versatile easy chairs, armchairs and twin-seat sofas. Inspired by the powerful artistry of Pieter Mondrian, the range is characterised by the painter’s idiosyncratic geometry and simple, uncluttered lines, and has been created exclusively for Design at Knightsbridge by James A Wright.

    Mondrian upholstery is in either fabric or hide, with the rounded styling and crafted timber frame emphasised by piping to the inside and outside back. Show-wood is offered in six standard finishes – Cherry, Mahogany, Natural Beech, Wenge, Walnut or Oak – and the new upright models feature stretcher rails for enhanced stability.

    All Mondrian seating is manufactured in the UK using timber from renewable sources: Knightsbridge Furniture holds FISP and FSC/PEFC certification, ISO 14001:2004 for its environmental management system and BS EN ISO 9001:2008 quality management accreditation.

    A peppering of Focus SB plates for refurbishment

    More than 300 lighting plates from the Focus SB range have been specified during the refurbishment of Peppering House near Chichester. The ranges specified included Prism II Clear Acrylic, Ambassador Primed White and True Edge.Martin Ellwood, Managing Director of Bognor Regis-based installer Homepower, said: “Due to the nature of the property and the variation of the interior design themes in each room, the owner was looking for an array of lighting plate finishes to complement the paint and wallpaper. Focus SB has a very wide range of finishes suitable for all ages of properties and we were very pleased with what it had to offer.”

    Now that the project has been completed, Martin says he would not hesitate to specify Focus SB plates again: “The finished quality on the products was superb. Both myself and the customer are extremely pleased with the end result.”

    Best Western to debut in Nepal

    Best Western International (BWI) – the World’s Largest Hotel Chain® – is continuing its rapid expansion in Asia Pacific with the launch of its first hotel in Nepal.Scheduled to open its doors in the Q1 of 2013, the 60-room Monty’s hotel signed into Best Western hotel chain will be a brand new midscale property in the heart of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu.

    The new hotel will be located on Thamel Road, an area of downtown Kathmandu famed for its vast array of local restaurants and boutique shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs, as well as mountaineering outlets catering to Nepal’s booming adventure travel market.

    “Nepal’s travel industry is booming, and Best Western is proud to offer a brand new hotel catering to the growing number of tourists wanting to experience this breathtaking country,” said Glenn de Souza, Best Western International’s Vice President International Operations – Asia & the Middle East.

    Nepal has witnessed a surge in tourist arrivals in recent years. In 2011, which was designated ‘Visit Nepal Year’ by the country’s Ministry of Tourism, more than 544,000 tourists entered the country through Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport – 21% more than in 2010.

    This trend has continued in 2012, with arrivals increasing 23% in the first four months of this year, to almost 208,000.

    With an increasing number of flight connections to Kathmandu, including the launch of new low-cost services by flydubai, Air Arabia, SpiceJet and IndiGo in recent years, demand for this enticing destination looks set to grow and grow.

    Accor opens First Pullman Hotel in the UK

    Accor has announced the opening of its first Pullman branded hotel in the UK, the Pullman London St Pancras.

    Accor is establishing this international upscale brand in the UK in a move to widen its hotel brand portfolio in the UK, which currently includes Sofitel, MGallery, Novotel, Mercure, ibis, ibis Styles and ibis budget. Pullman London St Pancras, previously home to Accor’s Novotel brand, officially opens this month (September) following a comprehensive refurbishment which has seen the complete transformation of the hotel into one of London’s most contemporary and stylish hotels.

    Entering the market as London’s newest upscale hotel brand, the UK’s first Pullman hotel is a cosmopolitan home of style and modernity. Situated just three minutes from King’s Cross St Pancras, the hotel features 312 bedrooms, with panoramic views of the London skyline, and a restaurant and bar named Golden Arrow.     Decorative electrical wiring accessories specialist and lighting and audio control systems manufacturer Hamilton Litestat will showcase its full range of products at this year’s Decorex event. New for 2012 is a collection of architectural ironmongery from artisan Italian brand, Giara®. Hamilton has recently begun supplying a variety of luxury door handles from Giara®, which are cast in sand moulds using a technique dating from 5,000 BC and finished by hand; each one possessing a unique individual character. The handles are crafted from high quality Britannia metal and bronze, both of which are resistant to corrosion and require no lacquer, allowing the natural beauty of the metal to shine through. Hamilton’s expert team is able to design and supply bespoke wiring accessories to complement the natural finishes of the Giara® handles collection.

    Swissôtel Hotels & Resorts Expands Its Properties in Turkey with Two New Deluxe Hotels in Bodrum

    Swissôtel Hotels & Resorts’ portfolio in Turkey is being expanded with two new deluxe hotels: a beach resort and a city resort in Bodrum. In addition to Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, Bodrum will become another important feature destination in the Turkish market for this international hotel group with Swiss roots. The two new properties are scheduled to open in 2013 and 2014.Swissôtel’s future beach resort lies directly on the waterfront in Turgutreis, approximately 20 kilometres from the centre of Bodrum. The main two-storey hotel comprises 66 rooms and suites offering at least 40m2 per room, complemented by villas and duplex terraces in front, which house 72 residences that are 85 – 274m2 in size. Rounding off the offering are indoor and outdoor pools, Pürovel Spa & Sport, a wide variety of sport opportunities and various restaurants.

    The Bodrum city project of Swissôtel is located in the hills of Bodrum, with a fascinating panoramic view over the city. 56 elegant rooms and suites, 45 private residences, three restaurants and Pürovel Spa & Sport will be available to all guests.     Contactless technology set to take off with NFC enabled smartphones

    The day is drawing nearer when consumers with NFC enabled smartphones will use their phones in a different way – with paying for goods and retrieving information becoming second nature. With NFC predicted to make the greatest impact in the world of retail, Signbox’s Mark Bartlett, a leading expert on NFC technology, comments on how NFC will transform the retail environment.It’s now widely recognised that the ubiquity and multi-functionality of smartphones positions mobile technology to replace the physical wallet. Mobile payments that use contactless technology are simply an alternative to paying with cash, credit cards and contactless cards. The mobile phone becomes a point of sale wallet replacement – a mobile or digital wallet. Google, Apple and Microsoft have all moved into the market for digital wallets. For now, these technology companies are working with banks and credit card companies to implement mobile payment solutions.

    Consumers, and indeed many retailers, could be forgiven for a lack of understanding or confusion about contactless technology, especially with all the global “noise” surrounding the arrival of Near Field Communication, or as it is more commonly known, NFC. It’s NFC that is behind many mobile payment solutions and what is driving the inexorable rise in contactless technology.

    Mark Bartlett, whose company Signbox Ltd has pioneered the development of smart posters that incorporate NFC technology, comments, “NFC is unequivocally the breakthrough technology – with NFC we can look ahead to the day in the near future when consumers with NFC enabled smartphones will use their phones in a different way – with paying for goods and retrieving information becoming second nature; leading to a seismic shift in the retail landscape with NFC predicted to make the greatest impact in the world of retail.”

    Bartlett says that the tipping point for NFC mobile payments will come in 2015 when there will be a sufficient volume of NFC enabled smartphones, with the forecast being that, worldwide, NFC enabled handset penetration will reach more than 51% or 863 million smartphones. At this time consumers around the world could generate over $50 billion in sales through NFC-based mobile payments.

    Bartlett adds, “Basically NFC facilitates data transfer between two ‘devices’ when placed a few centimetres apart – swiped or “tapped”. With NFC there are no services to sign up for. No PINs or passwords to enter. NFC is a wireless technology that enables data exchange or information delivery and communication to occur between any two electronic devices when they are in close proximity of each other. If you tap your NFC enabled device to another NFC enabled device or tap point, like a smart poster or label, you can retrieve almost any kind of data.”

    Utilising NFC, campaign managers and retailers can deliver payment options, coupons, loyalty programmes, brand apps, links to join interactive games, product information, social media connections and so on.

    “In fact one of the biggest misconceptions is that NFC is just about mobile payments. Yet the focus of the NFC market is actually shifting from payment applications and it is forecast that by 2016 70% of NFC tag shipments will end up being used in marketing and promotional applications,” Bartlett points out.

    He adds that store owners and brand custodians can already embed the technology into a variety of marketing collateral such as advertisements, signs, business cards, stickers and smart posters – the latter probably becoming the biggest marketing use of NFC technology.
    Bartlett concludes that, “When a smartphone becomes a portable NFC reader, the possibilities really are endless. With NFC the retail landscape will change forever and forward thinking retailers are now making plans to exploit the amazing opportunities presented by this breakthrough technology”.

    Centara to Open Two Hotels in Sri Lanka

    Centara Hotels & Resorts is to open its first two properties in Sri Lanka during the second half of this year named “Centara Passikudah Resort & Spa Sri Lanka” and “Centara Ceysands Resort & Spa.” Both resort hotels will be operated by Centara under a management contract and will be part of the company’s core brand of four-star properties.

    Centara Passikudah Resort & Spa Sri Lanka is a 126-room property located next to the beach at Passikudah, renowned for its long stretch of shallow coastline, while Centara Ceysands Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka is located on the Paradise Island peninsula at Bentota, flanked on one side by the Indian Ocean and the other by the Bentota River.

    Centara Ceysands Resort & Spa with 166 units is flanked by a river on one side and a pristine beach on the other, the hotel is accessible only by ferry and all rooms have spectacular views.

    Room types include Superior, Deluxe, Deluxe Pool Access, Family Residences, and Suites.

    Restaurants include an all-day dining outlet serving Sri Lankan, Asian and international cuisines and features live cooking stations while a seafood restaurant and the Ceylon Club will have an emphasis on the Ceylonese tea heritage.     Trevira CS at MoOD 2012

    With its premium brand Trevira CS, polyester fibre manufacturer Trevira is making its 17th appearance in September this year at the Brussels trade fair for home textiles. A total of 62 Trevira CS partners are among the 210 exhibitors at MoOD, representing, as always, a substantial element in this market segment with their contract collections.The financial crisis in the eurozone continues to present the sector with new challenges, particularly in the important southern European countries with their large base of high quality textile manufacturers. Nonetheless, there are still opportunities for specialties, despite the difficulties. The Trevira CS brand attracts constant interest, as the trademark approval statistics show – the number of approvals rose by almost 8% on last year’s figure. Many Trevira CS fabric manufacturers and suppliers are represented in the growth markets in Asia and the Middle East, with a successful business there. Fibre company Trevira supports its partners in their efforts to increase their business in “made in Europe“ textiles and to raise market awareness. Together with its representatives in these markets, Trevira offers its customers an information and service network.

    Joint appearance with partners at trade fair

    At this year’s MoOD Trevira is making a joint appearance with its top customers from the yarn and weaving sectors. With 11 weavers from among its Gold and Silver customers participating, the Trevira CS satellite stand in Hall 9 will be a top-class venue. Trevira has attracted some prominent names to MoOD, either returning to the exhibition or making a first appearance there as exhibitors. At the Trevira CS Square are: Création Baumann, Dina Vanelli, Fidivi, Lodetex, Ludvig Svensson, Müller Zell, Pugi, Rohleder, Spandauer Velours, Velours Blafo and Verotex. In the stand decorations trade visitors can find in addition some of the latest creations in Trevira CS from prestigious editors/converters. Of the eleven exhibitors at MoOD Yarns six are also involved in the Trevira CS partner concept of Gold and Silver Customers, some of whom are in Brussels for the first time. Fil Man Made, Hof Garn, Torcitura Lei-Tsu, Torcitura Padana, Selvafil and Torcitura Fibre Sintetiche are displaying yarns for the manufacture of Trevira CS materials. The joint appearance at the trade fair forms part of the Trevira CS Club concept, a further instance of Trevira’s close cooperation with its partners. The Trevira CS Award – now an established tradition at MoOD – is much appreciated by Trevira CS customers, as it is seen in the market as a marker of high value innovation. The prize is awarded for an outstanding new Trevira CS creation from amongst the exhibitors. Winners in the last three years were Dina Vanelli, Lodetex and Bruvatex.

    The Club Concept: focussed service and competition of creativity

    Following its launch in January, the Trevira CS Club Concept is being expanded during the fourth quarter with an online platform on the Trevira website. Trevira CS partners will be able to register here and find their points score, which provides information on the level in the Club and offers access to the corresponding services. Today the Trevira CS brand not only stands for the flame retardancy function, it also stands for high textile quality and innovative design. Trevira is particularly keen to show its appreciation of its customers’ creativity within the framework of the Trevira CS Club and in the 4th quarter will be announcing a creativity competition. The action, dubbed “Fabric Creativity Competition“, will give every fabric manufacturer and supplier the opportunity to secure additional points with particularly innovative developments – and thus increase their entitlement to service. There will be a reward for each entry. A panel made up of prominent professionals will be the judges and their assessments will take account of various criteria, such as degree of innovation, technical execution, suitability for the contract market and trend setting. On the panel will be: Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk, JOI-Design Hamburg, Prof. Bettina Göttke-Krogmann, Burg Giebichenstein – the Kunsthochschule Halle, together with Natalija Zimmermann, interior designer and stylist, BZ.Bildung-Beratung-Innovation, Leipzig. There are prizes for the 10 best fabrics. They gain extra Club points, are highlighted on the Trevira stand at Heimtextil and will receive some effective publicity. Selection of winners is due to be complete at the end of November.

    W Hotels Worldwide Set to Debut in Colombia with the Opening of W Bogota

    W Hotels Worldwide has recently announced it has signed an agreement with Terranum Hotels to debut a new W Hotel in Bogota, Colombia. Slated to open in 2014, W Bogota will be a part of a larger mixed-use development, which will also include premium office space and high-end retail. W Bogota will be located in the heart of the fashionable Usaquen district in the northern part of the city, just steps away from the neighbourhood’s trendy restaurants, cafes, and shopping. W Bogota will be designed by New York-based Studio Gaia, who has drawn inspiration from Colombia’s famous El Dorado legend. According to the legend, during the pre-Colombian period, every time the indigenous Muisca tribe had a new Chief, the people would make offerings to their god by throwing gold, emeralds and semi-precious stones into the Guatavita Lake. The mystery and adventure of the El Dorado legend will come to life in the design of the hotel in innovative and unique ways, using colour, light and texture to bring in the vibrancy and glamour of Colombia’s varied landscape.

    “The W brand’s expansion into Colombia is another milestone in bringing the global design powerhouse to the world’s most exciting cities and vibrant resort destinations,” said Vincent Gillet, Global Brand Leader, W Hotels and Le Méridien. “W will offer a completely new and distinctive experience to the hotel market in Bogota, providing a stylish escape and innovative design in one of the city’s most premier districts.”

    Demonstrating hotel excellence at Sleep 2012

    Following the success of its inaugural outing to the Sleep Event last year, Laufen is delighted to be making a return visit to this leading show for the hotel sector at London’s Business Design Centre from 21 to 22 November 2012. The Swiss manufacturer will have double the space at this year’s event, which in itself is a reflection of its continued commitment to the hotel sector.

    Visitor’s to this year’s Sleep Event will find the Laufen stand split in two – with one side showcasing its inspirational Boutique hotel bathrooms, whilst on the other side the latest sanitaryware to enhance public wash spaces will be unveiled.

    This will be the first time that the new Palomba Collection 2012 has been seen in the UK and as such it will take centre stage on stand G21. This new collection has been designed with the hotel bathroom firmly in mind, with a feature being a freestanding bathtub, with a high back that is ergonomically sloped and natural lines that mould to the contours of the body to create the last word of bathing comfort.

    Offering a truly flexible option, the Collection now also includes new furniture modules. Available in a range of colours and open at the front, the furniture can be stacked, lined up in a row or combined with the range’s medium and tall cabinets.

    Also on stand at Sleep 2012 will be Laufen’s award-winning Antero water-saving urinal and the Cinto urinal divider. Designed by Toan Nguyen, the bowl of the Antero urinal, set on a large format base plate, rises organically towards the user. The practical requirements of the hotel environment are met as the Antero features a needs-based electronic control system, which flushes thoroughly yet economically and is available in a mains, battery or flush-mounted version. An integral overflow protection ensures that flushing stops if the outlet is blocked, preventing flooding.

    Representatives of the Global Projects Team will be present at Sleep 2012 in London and look forward to welcoming visitors to the stand.

    The large walnut club table was designed as a centre piece for the stylish Executive Lounge and RHA’s custom made seating in the Icon Bar helps to achieve a contemporary look with a sense of “quintessential Britishness”.

    Hilton’s welcoming Lobby has RHA bespoke wooden tables scattered around.

    The Sky Bar on the 9th Floor has an impressive outdoor terrace overlooking the iconic Wembley Stadium, a perfect place to have a cocktail before a big event.

    COMO Hotels and Resorts unveils the design concept for Point Yamu by COMO

    COMO Hotels and Resorts has recently unveiled a detailed design concept for Point Yamu by COMO, a new resort in Thailand with interiors by Italian architect and designer, Paola Navone.Opening Summer 2013, Point Yamu on Phuket will be the Italian-born Navone’s first ever hotel project, her powerful vision bringing a fresh aesthetic to Thailand while reflecting the group’s ongoing commitment to the very best in contemporary design.

    The beachside development – COMO’s first in Thailand outside Bangkok – will comprise a full-scale, 79-room resort with 30 villas, a spa and two restaurants. This is in addition to a clutch of private residences available to purchase; when they open in July 2013, these residences will occupy the same peaceful peninsula on the east side of the island with views out to the limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay and the Andaman Sea.

    Navone is creating at Point Yamu an environment that encapsulates the easygoing, sophisticated spirit of the company’s ‘by COMO’ island resorts – Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos and Cocoa Island in the Maldives. Point Yamu, inspired directly by the sea, will also be distinct in character by way of its contemporary look blended with elements of Thai culture.

    Says Navone: “It’s about building a resort where you feel relaxed, you feel soft and not stressed by anything that surrounds you. To my mind the best hotels are contemporary places but at the same time they root you in a locale, so you know where you are. This balance is vital.”

    At Point Yamu, Navone is employing a dazzling palette of bright aquamarines, inspired by the sea views, and blazing-hot oranges, reminiscent of Buddhist robes. Her clever use of Thai artisanal techniques put to new effect includes the traditional wood tiling in the restaurant – in this instance, used as the scales of a huge fish – and outsized, balloon-like lampshades fashioned from local woven rattan inspired by local crab and lobster traps.

    Navone’s interior detailing also plays with proportions – a whimsical, magical approach that juxtaposes the outsized with something delicate, like the installation of stacked Thai tables supporting a single Thai ceramic vase.

    Paola Navone has been at the forefront of worldclass interiors for over 30 years, as well as designing products for numerous leading brands, including Driade, Gervasoni, Guzzini, Poliform and Emu. Most recently her ‘Secret Garden’ at the Milano Salone del Mobile 2012 received high praise: big blue nests, interwoven with 13,000 hazelnut branches, hiding some of the most beautiful chandeliers of the Murano glassmaking tradition by Barovier&Toso. Based in Milan, she has lived in Hong Kong and worked extensively in South East Asia including Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

    Stepping up Growth Through Conversions, Aloft® Unveils Hotels in San Francisco and Nashville

    A pair of Aloft hotels opening this month will have more in common than bold design and a buzzing social atmosphere; both are conversions of existing hotels, and highlight an exciting new growth channel for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.’s ‘style at a steal’ brand. Aloft San Francisco Airport will open its doors next week after 14 months of extensive renovations. The 253-room hotel marked a milestone as the first external conversion project undertaken by Aloft in 2011. The property, owned by Starwood, brings the in-demand Aloft brand to the Bay Area for the first time.

    Aloft Nashville West End opened on the 6th September. The 139-room hotel marks Aloft Hotel’s debut in Nashville, and replaces the Hotel Indigo Nashville Music Row. The property itself is an adaptive reuse of an office building originally constructed in 1970.

    Conversion or adaptive-reuse projects are also underway for Aloft in Tucson, Calgary and Atlanta. For guests, who have made Aloft one of the world’s most prized hospitality brands, conversions mean access to their favorite hotel at more key locations.

    Roman, the UK’s leading shower manufacturer, is set to officially launch their unique Project Specification Guide, which highlights their almost unlimited Bespoke capabilities, at this year’s Sleep Event on their stand M35A.Roman’s Project Specification Guide, which allows customers to pick and choose every single part of their showering configuration, is specifically aimed towards specifiers, designers and architects working on large scale projects, and in particular is perfect for the hotel sector. This makes the Sleep Event the ideal launch for the guide.

    Roman’s stand will incorporate a range of bespoke products, which will include designs that have been created and specified internationally for hotel and housing projects – highlighting the types of designs that can be developed with the use of the Project Specification Guide. This includes a shower enclosure with a reduced height end panel, which has been installed onto a bath – a great space saving configuration.

    Roman will also be showcasing an on-trend ‘peek-a-boo’ style bathroom, which includes a glass toilet cubicle and shower enclosure combination. Roman will be incorporating a frosted modesty glass partition between the toilet cubicle and shower enclosure, highlighting a popular ‘modesty’ style version of the configuration. The toilet cubicle will incorporate a two way swing hinged door, which can also be specified on a shower enclosure.

    Alongside enclosure options, Roman will showcase their solid surface design and manufacture capabilities with the addition of a solid surface vanity top, alongside their solid surface Infinity Shower Trays. Roman have an on-site solid surface manufacturing facility, where they can create a range of products perfect for the hotel bathroom, including shower trays in unique footprints, vanity tops, basins and solid surface accessories – all can be created to match a specific colour.

    The stand will also incorporate a bespoke bath screen option, where the profile on the screen is completely hidden, for a pure glass feel. Along with some totally minimalist wetroom options.

    Roman has worked on a variety of hotel projects, inside of the UK, as well as Worldwide. Recent export job references include; a luxury holiday home development in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; several projects in Abu Dhabi, including a boutique 5 star hotel and residential projects; and several designer hotels in Dubai.

Fitted by Essex-based contractors Spratlings Ltd, appointed by project managers Connor Construction, the carpet was specified by Trevillion Interiors and created by Wilton’s experienced design team. Covering 436sqm, the carpet delivers a striking historical style statement that fits with the hotel’s desire to encapsulate the spirit of bygone eras in its many different public areas.

    As Frances Blackham, design director, Trevillion Interiors explains, “the Atrium Bar at The Imperial lends itself well to the Art Deco age, with wall panelling, high ceilings and plenty of natural light, and yet, when it came to choosing the floorcovering we still wanted to create a spectacular focal point, using eye-catching deco colours ofcharcoal and gold. Wilton Carpets Commercial interpreted our brief to perfection, with design manager Julie Robertson creating an all over large-scale pattern perfect for the grand Atrium bar.     Regents Court launches refurbished apartments

    Regents Court has unveiled a fresh new look following the completion of a refurbishment which transformed the iconic hotel over winter.

    New paint, furniture, lighting, blinds and an upgrade to the hotel’s WiFi, which is now provided free to guests, are among the improvements made to the spacious, iconic Potts Point apartments. The completion of the refurbishment comes ahead of 8Hotels’ first anniversary as operator of the Regents Court’s property.

    Founder and CEO of 8Hotels, Paul Fischmann, said he was thrilled with the results of the refurbishment that had helped restore the apartments to their former glory.

    “We’ve worked closely with the owners to reinvigorate the hotel and the Regents Court brand in order to reclaim its title as one of Sydney’s preeminent boutique hotel residencies,” Fischmann said.

    Fischmann said the completion of the refurbishment was a significant step towards 8Hotels achieving its stated goal: to reengage Regent Court’s great history and rebuild its former reputation.

    “Combine these changes to the improvements our dedicated team has made to the service and the operations of the property, and I feel I can confidently say that Regents Court is in its best shape ever,” he said.

    “We’ve looked at the big details, but also spent a lot of time focusing on the little details and we will continue to look for ways to improve this product further. Lensbury chose an impressive 6,250m² of bespoke carpet from the Lano Flooring Solutions collection to complement existing décor in both the hotel and conference areas. The new carpets also add to the existing products from Lano Flooring Solutions that have been utilised at the hotel as recently as earlier this year, cementing the strong working relationship between both parties.

    Specified by the Lensbury facilities management team, 650m2 of nine rowthree-ply axminster carpet weighing 1,460g/m² and featuring a delicate bordered scroll pattern in cream and black covers the hotel’s main corridors, reception and staircases. A further 600m2of this design without borders adorns corridors throughout the hotel for a seamless, flowing look.

    The sports bar is now home to 300m2 of hardwearing 11 row three-ply axminster carpet weighing 1,780g/m². A one-of-a-kind pattern inspired by Lano Flooring Solutions’ extensive design library, the rich red carpet features geometric style brown and white squares arranged in an attractive diagonal configuration.

    4,000m² of 11 row three-ply axminster carpet from Lano Flooring Solutions’ standard collection has been installed in the conference centre, with Lensbury increasing the quality from nine row to 11 row to meet the demands of this exceptionally busy location. Resilient and robust, the new carpet features a small circular design upon a dark background that matches the existing conference furniture perfectly.

    The high-profile redevelopment of the ground floor lobby at Taj Crowne Plaza London – St James, designed by global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan, has completed.The project, delivered in partnership with client Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces, creates a new, fresh guest experience that honours the heritage features of the existing interior, with the practice’s design brief including the lobby lounge and reception, lobby bar and restaurant at the hotel, located at 51 Buckingham Gate, London.

    51 Buckingham Gate is one of central London’s finest grand hotels, an established institution that has accommodated travellers, celebrities, ministers and presidents. Many years of service had taken their toll and the time had come to unveil a new revived lobby experience that coincided with the renovation of the guestrooms.

    The practice’s strategy was to draw on and complement the romantic late Victorian-early Edwardian architectural splendour by introducing sophisticated and modern classic furniture and lighting pieces. Its resultant materials selection was refined and involved working with the finest manufacturers to deliver intricately crafted furniture with superior quality marquetry.

    Upholstered in hi-sheen silk and velvet fabrics, these pieces reflect the light from the glamorous Murano glass chandeliers above. Feature pieces include an art deco inspired decorative mirror flanked by a dramatic pair of eccentric wing chairs in velvet upholstery.

    Rezidor launches ambitious energy-saving initiative

    Rezidor has launched a group-wide energy-saving initiative: The ambitious and pro-active programme Think Planet targets an energy consumption reduction of 25% by the year 2016 in all Rezidor hotels across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The group is currently present in 70 countries where 330+ hotels of the brands Radisson Blu, Park Inn by Radisson and Hotel Missoni are operated, and 100 further properties are under development. “Think Planet reinforces Rezidor’s position as one of the industry leaders in terms of sustainability. Many of our hotels have already introduced progressive, environmentally friendly measures – now we are spreading these initiatives into all our properties and focus on key energy-saving investments that will have the biggest impact”, said Inge Huijbrechts, Director Responsible Business at Rezidor. “At the same time, we are currently faced with significantly rising energy costs in many countries, along with government carbon taxation.     Think Planet has been developed and is driven by a specially formed, interdepartmental and cross-regional team at Rezidor – with representatives from Technical Services, Operations, Purchasing, Finance, and Responsible Business.     Ibis steps up its presence in Hong Kong

    And then there were two in Hong Kong! Ibis has recently opened its second hotel in this archipelago that has been dubbed the Pearl of the East. It was an exciting challenge and the ibis teams in this uncannily buoyant part of the world pulled it off. This hotel is in the heart of Hong Kong’s business, cultural and retail district, and a short walk from the Mass Transit Railway station, and from Macau Ferry Pier terminal and heliport. The impressive building houses 550 up-to-the-minute contemporary rooms inter alia featuring bay windows, high ceilings, new bedding and free Wi-Fi access, i.e. all ibis’ hallmark quality standards.

    Major architectural feature unveiled for new University of Nottingham eco-hotel

    A dramatic, undulating timber canopy has been completed over the Orchard Hotel, which is currently under construction on the University Park campus at The University of Nottingham. The rolling canopy is one of the most striking features of the £20 million, 202-bed eco-friendly hotel, designed by RHWL Architects and being built by BAM Construction for the University. The oversailing canopy highlights the hotel’s entrance providing solar shading and filtered light to the public front-of-house reception and foyer lounges within. The ripple of the structure reflects the contours of the hillside orchard landscape in which the building sits, whilst the use of timber responds to the natural setting of mature trees nearby. The two hotel bedroom wings sit comfortably either side of the entrance and canopy.

    Corrie Jones, Associate at RHWL Architects, said:
    “This will be a landmark hotel that reflects its beautiful parkland setting, right from the design and choice of materials through to the furnishings of each room.

    “The site itself offered an opportunity to forge a strong link between the conference centre and the rest of the university, and this is something that has strongly driven our design.”

    Mark Ferrie, BAM Construction’s project manager said: “The installation of the canopy marks the last key architectural element in the construction which is due for completion in November.”

    The hotel, located to the South West of Nottingham city centre and accessed from Beeston Lane, will be operated by DeVere Venues. It will serve the adjacent East Midlands Conference Centre and provide accommodation for visiting students, lecturers and parents as well as business travellers.

    The project’s commitment to the surrounding environment is further reflected in its high level of sustainability. The development is aiming for a BREEAM rating of Excellent, with sustainable features including a green roof system, photovoltaic panels, smart building management systems and energy efficient lighting, glazing and ventilation systems.

Stylematters designed and provided all the lounge seating and cushions for the outside areas working with IRC Operations Director, Danny Fox. The south facing, first floor terrace, has added an additional 80 seats to the restaurant and even has its own champagne bar. Combining luxury with the ultimate in simplicity, the space is a strikingly geometric interpretation of the outdoor lounge trend. Lush seating, top of the line heat lamps, bespoke lighting and fragrant jasmine climbing plants line the length of the terrace, creating an intimate space with the feel of a chic city garden. With automatic retractable awnings guests will enjoy the terrace all year round. Open daily for coffee from 11am it provides the ultimate in all day and every day dining.

    Designed for dining all year round, rain or shine, the terrace has been created by the leading British designer Robert Angell. Before establishing his own design practice, Angell worked alongside David Collins on many of London’s most prestigious restaurants, bars and hotels, including the Wolseley and Nobu. Angell was also responsible for the design of the newly created Cicchetti Bar & Late Lounge at Piccolino in Mayfair, London, which opened in April 2012 as Individual Restaurants’ most recent project.

    Hilton Glasgow Unveils First Look at Trio of Dining Destinations

    Following an extensive multi-million pound renovation and redesign, Hilton Glasgow has announced the introduction of three new food and beverage outlets to the hotel.

    Connich Bar, Morblas Restaurant and Ti Tea Lounge are three new concepts for the stylish city centre hotel, which will celebrate 20 years in the city later this year. The first to launch is Connich Bar, taking its name from the Scottish Gaelic word meaning ‘to encounter’. Located on the ground floor of the hotel, the much-anticipated venue is designed to be a stylish choice for hotel guests and visitors alike, providing the perfect place to meet and enjoy the talk of the day. Inviting guests to experience the warmth and passion of Scottish Hospitality at its best, the menu in Connich Bar offers both signature and classic cocktails as well as wee nibbles and bigger bites.

    The “Salon Suisse” is an event programme which accompanies the Swiss contribution to the Architecture Biennale 2012 in Venice with readings, lectures, panel discussions, workshops and performances. The “Salon Suisse” is initiated by the Swiss Cultural Foundation Pro Helvetia and takes in the Bel Etage of the “Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi”, official partner of the programme is the Swiss bathroom specialist Laufen.From 29th August to 25th November the Biennale in Venice is the mecca of the international architectural scene. The 13th Mostra Internazionale di Architettura – la Biennale di Venezia is directed by the British architect David Chipperfield, who presents at the Central Pavilion at the Giardini and the Arsenale a thematic exhibition called “Common Ground”, that consists of 66 projects by architects, photographers, artists, critics and scholars from all over the world. Also 55 nations will be represented with their own pavilions, including Switzerland, which regularly takes part in the Biennale since 1920 and has its own pavilion in the Giardini since 1951. This year, Switzerland will be represented by the architect and ETH-Professor Miroslav Šik and his exhibition “And now the ensemble!!!”, which requests colleagues, clients and authorities to construct new buildings which give due sympathy to their environment.

    In addition, the Swiss Cultural Foundation Pro Helvetia is for the first time supplementing the Swiss contribution with a comprehensive event programme, curated by Robert Guy Wilson, editor of London’s architecture magazine “Block”. Under the label “Salon Suisse” readings, lectures, discussion, workshops and performances will take place at Palazzo Trevisan, which aim to promote the exchange between the professionals and the public very much in the spirit of a literary salon. “Laufen is partner of the Salon Suisse because our products are designed respecting the principals of internationally renowned Swiss Architecture: clear form, quality and sustainability.     Casablanca welcomes Sofitel

    For the first time, Sofitel is to open its doors in Casablanca, Morocco’s economic capital, with Sofitel Casablanca Tour Blanche. The glass building designed by Belgian architect Patrick Guénard reflects the breath of modernity that the country’s largest city is currently experiencing. Situated at the heart of the business district the 24-story hotel stands out in the skyline. Frenchmen Marc Hertrich and Nicolas Adnet were given the job of decorating its interior. The pair have managed to ingeniously mix clean lines with Moorish trimmings. The innovatively designed 141 bedrooms and 30 suites all have a view of the white city.

    The hotel also offers a variety of dining possibilities. Mourad Mahfoud, Moroccan chef of L’Arabesque restaurant, who trained in Paris, subtly combines French cuisine with local seasonal products in this gastronomic restaurant. L’Atelier Oriental mixes flavours from the Maghreb, Arabia, Persia and Asia. The La Casart bar is the latest addition to Casablanca’s reputable night life. The bar lounge is dedicated to art, and its paintings and sculptures fit in perfectly with the decor, in particular René Caussanel’s mural “Jaune Soleil” (Yellow Sun).

    The Bank of England’s new Funding for Lending Scheme which is aims to unblock the flow of credit in Britain’s economy, will take more than a few months to fully bear fruit, BoE Paul Fisher said on Wednesday. Scepticism has already been raised as a number of the UK’s top lenders raise their STV rate on mortgages (further restricting credit and spending conditions for our consumers).With the BoE announcing another round of QE in July and unveiling the Funding for lending scheme, this morning’s broad money data will be of interest as will provide some indication of whether the bank’s stimulus is gaining traction.

    GBPEUR traded between a range of 66 points yesterday with a high of 1.26486 and a low of 1.2582 hit first thing in the London session. Overnight comments from China agreeing to continue buying European government bonds have bought the pair to session lows of 1.2610.

    GBPUSD traded within an equally tight range of 1.5802 to 1.5854 having a small flurry of activity post U.S GDP figures that showed no surprise to consensus. From here all eyes remain on Friday speech after which we look for either resistance of 1.5888 or support of 1.5750 to be tested.

    A Citigroup survey suggests that expectation for the rate of inflation to climb in the coming year has increased in July to 2.8% from June’s 2.4%, further constraining likely consumer spending and making it harder for the economy to emerge from recession.

    International News

    The ECB and the Fed are noticeably tight-lipped ahead of the ever important September briefings. Although the Kansas Fed sponsored Jackson Hole Economic Symposium is expected to shed light on fiscal policy and easing, it seems that speculation over what role the ECB will play in future bond buying remains the key concern across the major currencies.

    The euro did see some pressure yesterday as we saw headlines that another Spanish region could potentially request government aid, reminding everyone of how close the situation is to disaster. It does seem however that most traders will remain somewhat side-lined until an understanding on the ECB’s intervention is made clearer.

    EURUSD continues to hold above 1.25 with EUR peaking at 1.2573. The lowest key support of this range is being acknowledged as 1.2414, and traders suggest that any movement through 1.2588 may propel EUR higher to towards 1.27.

    The upward revision to US GDP growth in the second quarter, to 1.7% from the preliminary estimate of 1.5%, offers little comfort as it is old news.

    The alternative economic report, US GDI (gross domestic income) suggests that the US economy is hardly growing at all, which may go some way to explaining the slight dip in the value of the dollar over today’s session.

    US personal spending for July should provide some insight into postings for third quarter GDP. Spending is forecast to increase by 0.5% after a flat reading for June.

    Overlooking the valley, the hotel’s eleven private villas and six suites are each individual in design.     Due to a bank holiday there was no major data released in the UK, however sterling gained some ground against euro briefly on Friday to trade a high of 1.2671 before dropping to 1.2603 after US markets opened. After some choppy trading over the weekend the pair currently trade just below strong technical support at 1.26. A sustained break below this level could lead to another short term rally for the euro after last weeks increased confidence.GBPUSD traded generally downwards over the weekend after Fridays session’s high of 1.5869, we saw a steady decline to 1.5788 early this morning. After a sharp, but brief drop to 1.5752 cable has recovered to trade just below resistance at 1.58 again.

    UK inflation is expected to now go back over 3% by the year end, which lessens the argument for more QE, Sterling may be able to shake off the recent poor economic data and be somewhat supported, especially versus the US dollar.

    A survey showed today, Confidence of British businesses plunged over the summer, suggesting the economy will struggle to pull out of recession this year.

    The euro hit a session low of 1.2535 against the dollar and markets speculate on whether another round of quantitative easing for the US could be around the corner. It is likely that political uncertainty and macroeconomic downside risk will drive market development. Attention is now tuned to the monetary policy meeting in the ECB on 6 September.

    French president Francois Hollande said that while Greece must show its credibility by implementing austerity measures and reforms, Europe must also recognize efforts it has already made and help the country with growth.

    German IFO Business climate figures came in slightly worse than expected and GBPEUR reached a peak of 1.2654 after the news against the weekend low of 1.2609. “The news clearly shows that Germany cannot escape unharmed if the rest of the Eurozone falls into a deep recession,” said Boris Schlossberg, MD of FX Strategy at BK Asset Management in New York. German GfK Consumer Confidence Survey has balanced this data somewhat, after coming out better than expected this morning and strengthening the euro by around 30 pips on release against sterling.
    “Monetary policy should do what it can to support the recovery, but Sandra Pianalto, a voting member of the Fed remains increasingly hesitant over further QE. “We remain in a frustratingly slow economic recovery and there are limits to what monetary policy can accomplish”.

    The FED comments continue to send out a mixed message on QE policy and perhaps Bernanke’s speech on Friday may provide some clarification.There is potential for huge disappointment if Bernanke doesn’t do something, after conflicting reports on what the Fed would do sent expectations spinning last week.

    JPY strengthened after Japan cut its economic assessment, underlining the fragility of the global economy and fundamentally spurring demand for safer assets in the market – such as Japanese Yen and Swiss Franc. Japan’s currency weakened against all except three of its 16 major counterparts as Asian and European stocks declined. Japan’s government downgraded its assessment of the world’s third-biggest economy for the first time in 10 months and some analysts forecast that GDP will shrink this quarter. GBPJPY dropped to a 10-day low this morning of 123.69 after the news.

    Canada’s dollar strengthened for a second day against its US counterpart. The loonie rose 0.2% to 99.07. GBPCAD dropped to a weekend low of 1.5613 this morning after trading as high as 1.5769 on Friday.

    Australia’s dollar touched its lowest level in a month, extending a two-week decline. The Aussie fell against most of its major peers, AUDUSD declining 0.3% to 1.0369.

    New Adelaide hotel to showcase

    Accor will launch its pioneering economy hotel brand, Ibis, in Adelaide following the signing of an agreement with hotel developer and investor, Hines Property, who will develop a new hotel in the heart of the Adelaide CBD. The $65 million hotel development, which received planning approval in March this year, will be located in a prime location on Grenfell Street which houses many of the major corporate institutions and also enjoys immediate access to the shopping precinct of Rundle Mall and leisure based attractions in the city. The new hotel will reach 17 levels to the Adelaide skyline with panoramic views over Hindmarsh Square and to the Adelaide Hills.

    Timing of the development will coincide with the opening of the expanded Adelaide Convention Centre and redevelopment of Adelaide Oval with construction planned to commence later this year with a scheduled opening early in 2014.

    With 307 guest rooms, Ibis Adelaide will be the largest Ibis Hotel in Australia and will be a major boost for Adelaide’s tourism sector which is dominated by 4 and 5 star hotels. The hotel will also be the first purpose-built economy hotel in the CBD for over two decades and the first internationally branded hotel of its type to open its doors in Adelaide.

    The Ibis Adelaide will join a network of Ibis Hotels across every other mainland state capital in Australia and will join a network of over 900 Ibis hotels worldwide. The announcement of the new Ibis in Adelaide follows Accor’s decision earlier this year to give its Ibis brand “megabrand” status, creating three tiers for the brand – Ibis Budget, Ibis Hotels and Ibis Styles.

    Sterling hit a three-month high of 1.5912 against the dollar on Thursday, tracking gains in other perceived riskier currencies. While a small pullback looks like the next step GBPUSD is firmly in an upwards trend.As the Bank of England continues to endorse a wait-and-see approach for the near-term Sterling may remain supported. Although, we continue to look for strength or weakness in USD and EUR as the key drivers.

    GBPEUR showed signs of a potential move to the bottom of the range at 1.2580 hitting a day low of 1.2620.

    U.K. mortgage approvals rose in July from the previous month to 28,441, the British Bankers Association said today however approvals are down from 34,125 a year earlier.

    CBI figures which indicate short-term trends in the UK retail and wholesale distribution sector, showed a huge drop from 11% in July to -3% in August.

    Euro traders’ sensitivity to disappointing economic data remains absent, yesterdays PMI figures showed a steady contraction in the euro zone but had little effect on the strength of the euro

    EURUSD climbed as high as 1.2588, the highest level in 7 weeks, after the FOMC minutes weighed on the dollar and traders still hold optimism to potential ECB intervention and meetings over Greece. Any further upside may be capped by resistance at 1.2607.

    Euro-area services and manufacturing output contracted for a seventh straight month in August, adding to signs of a deepening economic slump as European leaders struggle to contain the fiscal crisis. The PMI figure of 46.6 was a slight improvement on the 46.5 in July, however still shows a contraction if under 50.

    Consumer confidence in the U.S. fell for the 6th consecutive time to -47.4. This was the lowest level since January, and the series of declines is the longest since 2008 as Americans’ held more pessimistic views on their finances.
    Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard said the Federal Open Market Committee minutes released yesterday are no longer as relevant because the U.S. economy has picked up in the past month.

    The worst U.S. drought in a half century and record feed prices are spurring farmers to shrink cattle herds to the smallest in two generations, driving beef prices higher.

    In Australia RBA Governor Glenn Stevens continued to talk up the Australian dollar with his belief that Australia will see growth and inflation close to trend going forward.
    In Asia, new orders in Chinese manufacturing dropped to a three-year low.

    Hilton Aberdeen Treetops has announced it will undergo a £425,000 refurbishment programme, expected to be completed by autumn 2012. The hotel will remain in operation throughout the works.Hilton Aberdeen Treetops located on Springfield Road will receive a complete overhaul of its bedroom corridors. 30 bedrooms including eight of the property’s deluxe plus business bedrooms will be upgraded and refurbished. The hotel business centre will also be refurbished to create a brand new lounge area with 24 hour beverages available. The hotel is also spending £75,000 upgrading kitchen and catering equipment.

    Stewart Lorimer, area general manager for North of Scotland, said, “This is just the latest in an ongoing programme of upgrades we have undergone at the hotel to ensure we remain a key player in attracting both business and leisure visitors to the city. Aberdeen’s hospitality sector continues to play a vital role in the economy of the city and we’re delighted to continually improve our proposition for busy business and leisure guests.”

    Seven of the hotel’s meeting rooms will be refurbished giving a new dynamic look to these areas which are a popular choice for meetings and conferences in the city.

    The refurbishment follows a £400K programme of work last year which included a revamp of lobby lounge areas, reception space, restaurant and ballroom.     The daily close over the magical resistance level of 1.5780 was the first sign of a potential move higher for GBPUSD, even with the technical set up firmly in place few expected a 100 pip rally following last night’s FOMC minutes that firmly places U.S QE back on the table in September. An expected higher revision in tomorrow’s UK GDP data should help to keep cable supported today. The UK’s recent poor trade deficit figures have put our fiscal policy firmly in the spotlight with a number of current and old MPC members adding personal comments over the past 24 hours. The measures put in place to protect our AAA credit rating status may have started to create the opposite effect as government borrowing figures miss targets.

    GBPEUR remained in consolidation yesterday opening at the low of 1.2641 to reach a high of 1.2693. Future direction continues to look like it will be driven by developments in the euro zone, allowing the pair to shrug off the normal effects of domestic data.

    GBPCAD maintained its recent upward trend to a hit a high of 1.5696, the highest since 1st August. GBPAUD continued to move higher touching 1.5144, the highest since July 25th.

    BBA data has this morning showed that UK mortgage approvals rebounded in July from their low in June.

    Yesterday’s August FOMC minutes revealed a high number of members judged additional monetary accommodation would likely be warranted fairly soon unless incoming information pointed to a substantial and sustainable strengthening in the pace of the economic recovery. Recent improved U.S data had scaled back expectations of further involvement from the FED. Bernanke’s speech at Jackson Hole next week is now extremely important as the markets look for confirmation of the prospect of QE in September.

    EURUSD continued a remarkable recovery from recent multi year lows. Closing the New York session at 1.2529 following the release of the FOMC Minutes. The pair is now showing signs of being overbought so a retracement could occur before any push higher with 1.2650 now being the next target in an optimum environment.

    CAD weakened off the back of lower than expected Retail Sales data and moved back towards parity with USD. BOC Governor Mark Carney reiterated its mildly hawkish stance, viewing that modest withdrawal of stimulus may be appropriate. Last month the BoC voted to keep its interest rates unchanged.

    Hong Kong will pioneer the sale of Chinese RMB futures contracts, the first offshore futures contracts deliverable in the Chinese currency on 17th September, hoping the plan will give it a larger role in the city’s exploding yuan market as China works to internationalize its currency.

    Germany, the champion of the euro area, sold over EUR4bn bonds dated for maturity September 2014 at rates meaning investors will receive no return. This reflects not only the demand for safety but also enthusiasm for potential exposure to a comeback of the Deutsche mark. If it were to make a comeback, any new Deutsche mark would be expected to appreciate quickly.
    Egypt has formally requested USD4.8bn from the IMF, according to a presidential spokesman. Ms. Lagarde has yet to respond to the request and met cabinet officials yesterday to continue the discussions.

    The leaders of Germany and France are set to hold talks in Berlin on whether to give Greece more time to make the cuts required by its debt bailout. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande will also meet Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras later this week. Mr Samaras is seeking an extension of up to two years. The talks come amid reports that due to the worsening state of the economy, which affects tax receipts and welfare spending levels, Greece may now need to find savings of up to 13.5bn euros – 2bn more than thought.

    German PMI services unexpectedly declined for the first time in 3 years this morning. While Europe’s flash PMI did nothing to challenge the notion that the single currency area is now firmly in recession.

    The UK released weak Public Sector Net Borrowing data which suggests the UK economy is slowing down and the euro was given a boost after Spain had a positive bond auction.After reaching a high of 1.2729 during the morning GBPEUR has since fallen to the lowest level in almost two weeks. US markets opened yesterday, and the pair posted an overnight low of 1.2641 after being dragged down by EURUSD movements created from more support on buying Spanish bonds.

    The UK government unexpectedly had to borrow money in July, traditionally a good month for tax receipts, further knocking Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne’s efforts to rein in the budget deficit. Fitch Ratings Agency responded and repeated comments from earlier this week that the UK’s triple-A rating could be at risk if the government diverges from its plan to cut the country’s budget deficit.

    UK manufacturers expect to hold output levels steady over the coming three months as new orders sank to the lowest level in 2012, reflecting a steep drop in overseas demand.

    Sterling benefitted from increased investor risk appetite and broke out of its range bound activity seen since early July. GBPUSD reached a high of 1.5802, a level not seen since May 22nd, the next key resistance level can be seen at 1.5818 and strong technical support at 1.57 could provide a solid platform for a higher trading range from 1.57-1.59.

    The euro rose to six-week highs against the dollar and yen before regional leaders meet this week to discuss Greece’s fiscal adjustment program amid optimism in the markets that the European debt crisis is starting to be contained.
    Fitch Ratings Agency said the weakest Eurozone countries were likely to face rating downgrades by the end of the year if there was no progress made on finding a resolution to the Eurozone crisis.

    The EURUSD rallied to a fresh monthly high of 1.2487 as ECB board member Jorg Asmussen endorsed an unlimited bond purchasing program to tackle the debt crisis, news was also leaked that Greece may get an extension to meet its budget target as European leaders convene this week.

    Spain sold €4.5bn of 12 and 18 month bills. The average yield on the one-year securities was 3.07%, compared with 3.92% at a previous auction on July 17.

    The US dollar weakened against all but one of its 16 major counterparts before a report today which is forecasted to show US home sales improved last month.

    Canadian wholesale sales shrank unexpectedly in June, the first drop in five months, yet Canada’s dollar appreciated to the highest level since May against the USD of 1.0148 as crude oil and global stocks gained amid speculation Europe’s debt crisis won’t deepen.

    Sweden’s krona gained as a central bank official said economic growth has been “unexpectedly” strong this quarter and the currency has strengthened more than estimated. The central bank has cut rates twice since December as Europe’s debt crisis begins to threaten an expansion in the largest Nordic economy.

    The South African rand gained for the first time in three days on speculation euro leaders will make progress on Greece’s debt crisis, stoking demand for riskier assets such as ZAR. GBPZAR had advanced over 3% in a week to trade at a 3 week high at 13.10 yesterday.

    Exports in Japan fell more than expected. Key among the various measures the decline since July last year was 8.1%, a decline of 2.9% was expected. The global slowdown has hit the Japanese economy hard and GBPJPY hit 125.49 yesterday, the highest level in six weeks.

    The Bank of England, which cut its growth forecasts this month, is trying to kick-start lending to bolster the economy after the recession deepened in the second quarter. Still, the housing market may remain under pressure as weak consumer confidence and the euro-area debt turmoil undermine demand.The Council of Mortgage Lenders showed yesterday that UK gross mortgage lending increased in July from June, continuing the unsettled pattern of monthly rises and falls as one-off effects alter the market on a monthly basis.

    Cable continued to test the top of the trading range during yesterday’s session driven by the market’s mood swings amid reports and denials over an ECB bond-buying plan. This morning GBPUSD has hit a two month high of 1.5775. A close above this number will open up 1.5900 as a target however with more than five failed attempts to do this recently another fail will not be a surprise.

    Following Fridays gains GBPEUR remained above 1.27 for most of the day yesterday, hitting an afternoon high of 1.2763 before settling around 1.2740 towards the late afternoon. Overnight some of yesterday’s good performance was lost; GBPEUR retreated and opened this morning around 1.2690.

    This morning public sector net borrowing came in below forecast continuing the deterioration seen over the past few months.

    The euro slipped as the Bundesbank argued against an unlimited bond purchase program to cap borrowing costs across the periphery countries, while a spokesman for the European Central Bank announced that plans to target the yield curve has ‘not yet been discussed’ by the Governing Council.

    In very similar trading to the close of the week last week EURUSD had a positive morning, opening at 1.2354 the pair quickly hit the day’s high at 1.2368 but sharply fell 0.27% to the low of 1.2296. It was halted by strong resistance at 1.2288 and closed the day just over the 1.23 mark. Overnight the euro retraced some of those losses and opened this morning fractionally over 1.24.

    Yields on Spanish and Italian bonds dropped to a six-week low yesterday on speculation leaders will agree on a plan to contain the debt crisis. Spain was quoted 23 basis points lower at 6.16%, while Italy was quoted at 5.72% down nine basis points

    The Australian dollar rose against all of its major counterparts before Europe’s leaders meet this week to discuss measures to stem the region’s debt crisis. The AUD strengthened versus the USD and JPY on prospects the European Central Bank will try to cap bond yields in the euro area, supporting investor appetite for riskier assets.

    After the RBA Minutes released last night, AUD added to yesterday’s gains against most of its major peers as the Reserve Bank of Australia made no mention of intervening to curb the currency’s strength, which has persisted despite a decline in the terms of trade. GBPAUD is currently trading below 1.50 at 1.4986.

    New Zealand Inflation Expectations (YoY) from the RBNZ decreased to 2.3% in 3Q from a previous 2.4% showing little change. The ongoing muted inflation expectations will add to the view that the RBNZ has plenty of time on its hands before it needs to contemplate a rate hike.

    Canada’s dollar held near its strongest level versus its US counterpart in more than three months amid improved US economic growth prospects and speculation European officials are moving closer to curbing their sovereign-debt crisis. The currency gained 0.2% last week, marking the sixth consecutive weekly gain.

    The Polish economy, after many quarters of resilience to the Euro zone’s crisis, has shown signs of slowing this year, with the economy expanding 3.5% in the first quarter compared to 4.3% in 2011.

    When the prestigious Wyndham Grand Hotel needed to save water and reduce the time taken to service bathrooms, the Turbo 88 Duoflush syphon from Thomas Dudley provided the perfect solution.Opened in 1989, the 5-star Wyndham Grand is London’s only all-suite hotel. It offers 154 suites over eight floors including four penthouse suites and a health and fitness centre.

    Saving time and water
    Overall, the Wyndham has more than 300 WCs. Given the need to ensure that all suites are available to customers at any given time, maintaining and repairing so many WC cisterns presents a considerable challenge for Chief Engineer Paul Hamilton.

    In addition, both the hotel and the Conrad Group to which it belongs are committed to the environment. As such, Paul has the additional objective of reducing the amount of water used by the hotel and its guests.

    Serviced in under five minutes
    After meeting with Thomas Dudley’s commercial sector specialists, Paul Hamilton decided that the Turbo 88’s combination of serviceability and water efficiency made it the automatic choice for the Hotel.

    Firstly, the Turbo 88 incorporates a unique patented 2-part design. Unlike one piece syphons, this enables the Turbo 88’s blue body section to be quickly and easily removed from the cistern whilst the white syphon downleg remains in position. The syphon’s moving parts can then be serviced in a matter of minutes without having to disconnect the water supply and dismantle the cistern.

    Paul Hamilton explains, “Like most hotels, we need to make maximum use of our suites. Previously, this has been difficult because when problems have arisen with one piece syphons, we have had to dismantle everything to remove the old syphon. This has resulted in suites being left out of service which costs the hotel money and disappoints customers. With the Turbo, we can complete servicing in less than five minutes which ensures that no suite is ever left out of service”.

    Potential savings using the Turbo 88:

    * Flush volumes are approximate and depend upon the cistern

    Significantly reduced water consumption
    The Turbo 88 also comes with Dudley Duoflush. This provides a water-saving reduced flush when the cistern lever is held down or a full flush when it is depressed and released in the normal manner.

    The syphon is a proven water-saver and reduced total household water consumption by around 10% in South West Water’s ‘Water Efficiency Trial’. In hotels and other commercial applications, the savings can be even more impressive.

    Furthermore, unlike unreliable outlet valves, the Turbo 88 cannot leak and has established an unrivalled track record of reliability, efficiency and quality.

We’ve certainly been impressed and will continue using it in the future.”

    What Does It Take To Do a Hotel Deal in Africa?

    At the Africa Hotel Investment Forum (AHIF) this September in Nairobi, one of the hot topics on the agenda will be ‘What it takes to do a deal in Africa’.

    Why is this such an important question? “Because Africa is a continent full of opportunity and impressive economic growth” says Jonathan Worsley, Chairman of Bench Events, the company organising AHIF. “However, it is not the easiest place in the world to do business but if it could become easier, the cheque books of international investors would open”. With 7 of the world’s 10 fastest growing economies being in Africa and economic growth averaging around 6% per annum, more than double the rate of many major Western economies and faster than the average for Asia, you might expect entrepreneurs to be rushing in. One of the reasons they’re only just starting to dip their toes in the water is the relative difficulty of doing business there.

    Jean Marc Grosfort, Chief Development Officer, Middle East & Africa for the hotel chain Marriott International says that the greatest obstacles to his company include: poor infrastructure, limited knowledge and appreciation of international standards, reluctance of local partners to put up sufficient cash, corruption and a construction industry that can suffer from mediocre quality and delays. He describes a hotel project where a hotel owner borrowed money for redevelopment. The lender insisted on its preferred site management company and the site management company allegedly misused the funds. As a consequence, the project was delayed and the owner was left with no option but to contemplate legal action against the lender. Stories like this do not help entrepreneurs to secure funding.

    A much talked-about inhibitor to in inward investment in Africa is political risk. Some international investors fear that if they put money into a project with one party in government, a subsequent change in administration could lead to the project being “nationalised”. Experienced deal makers point to various strategies to mitigate such risks. One is to find a local partner who is very well connected; another is to make the project subject to the legal jurisdiction of another country and a third is to give the government an interest in the project’s success by persuading it to take a stake with a specially constituted investment fund.

    Sometimes, having a strong brand name is sufficient to make things happen. Jean-Marc Grosfort reports that in one African country, the government was so happy to see a Marriott coming that strong words were given to the national bank by the minister of finance to ensure that the appropriate senior loan was available – the deal was signed in less than 4 months.

    Gabriel Matar, Director, Middle East & Africa, Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, points to the need for a destination to have a master plan for tourism development. “A master plan means that the country can give credibility to investors and that makes all the difference between funding or not”, he says: “Investors won’t spend money going against the type. It needs the government to be behind tourism development; that’s too big a job for the private sector. Many African governments don’t understand this and they think the private sector will do it all. In that scenario, the only chance for a new project to win funding is if there is a huge return for the private investor but such projects tend to carry excessive risk and ultimately fail.”

    Matar holds up Mauritius as a positive example. “There, tourism is a priority and they have a master plan that is respected and implemented by successive governments. Developments that fit the master plan will often receive government support in the form of help with finance, for example with investment by a national fund, by introductions to international sources of capital or by giving access to credit lines agreed by international lenders such as the IMF, the EBRD or the Africa Development Bank.”

    Philippe Doizelet, Managing Partner, Horwath HTL confirms a master plan for tourism development is the first step, particularly towards partnership between major hotel brands and local investment funds or institutional investors that are emerging in selected African countries. However, he points out that the time to structure a deal takes longer in Africa than anywhere else in the world and adds, “The levels of financial sophistication are variable – well developed in South Africa and Morocco but emerging elsewhere such as Senegal and Benin”.

    Senior Vice President Phillipe Baretaud, & Head of Development Europe Middle East Africa, Accor, which recently signed a management contract under the Sofitel flag for the hotel Ivoire in Abidjan, stresses the importance of an imaginative approach to financing. He says: “The key to hotel development in this market is operators and hotel owners working together to structure deals in innovative ways to secure financing.”

    Jonathan Worsley concludes: “Evidently, the expertise exists. Delegates at AHIF will receive detailed answers to the question ‘What does it take to do a deal in Africa’ – as we will hear from a panel of successful players in the African hotel market. We will learn about their activities and interrogate them on the strategies that unlock finance and promote long-term profitability of hospitality projects.”

    The pound continued to hold its position against the euro yesterday morning, opening at 1.2758, before jumping sharply to 1.2798 after UK retail figures came out 0.2% better than expected at 2.8% and Eurozone CPI figures were released without surprise. However the pair fell off throughout the afternoon to end up at the support level 1.2757With the major focus now shifting to September and the ECB’s do or die plan for Greece and the single currency, support and resistance levels currently sit at 1.2725 and 1.2820, a break outside of this range could facilitate a sharp move for the pair.

    After yesterday’s slight rally against the dollar, and an open of 1.5678, GBP climbed against the greenback trading as high as 1.5743, its highest level since July 30th before closing at 1.5734. The pair sits in a support/resistance range between 1.5671 and 1.5754

    BOE MPC member Martin Weale commented the economy is stagnating, but there is an underlying sense of confidence. He also underlined recent bank caution, saying the Eurozone remains the biggest cause for concern.

    International News

    The euro strengthened against a basket of currencies yesterday as comments from German Chancellor Angela Merkel backed ECB moves to help reduce borrowing costs, This helped the euro complete five day gains against 16 of its major counterparts.

    All eyes in the US will be on today’s release of the Michigan Consumer Sentiment figure, expected to come out inline at 14.55 GMT. With it being the last trading day of the week, a quiet morning for the pair could be overturned late in the session if the figure varies wildly from the 72.2 the market is expecting.

    European equity markets edged higher on Thursday after Bloomberg reported that Spain might receive the first, 30 billion euro tranche of the EU banking bailout as soon as by the end of this week, driving risk sentiment across the area.

    The late in the day data releases from the US sat in line with market expectation, with only the US Philly Fed Manufacturing Index being the only piece of date outside of its forecasted figure, -7.1 against an expected -5, marking an improvement from the previous -12.5, but still contracting.

    Speculation of further policy easing by the Fed, likely to be QE3, moved EUR/USD to higher levels yesterday. Having already edged higher on the day, following the recent mixed housing and labor market data, and dovish comments from Narayana Kocherlakota who is usually on the hawkish side helped the pair found new strength to reach 1.2369 after a continued climb throughout the day’s session.

    Recent data in New Zealand has been giving mixed messages about direction and momentum of the country’s economy. Last week’s HLFS employment report was on the soft side, as was card-spending data. Moreover, this week’s Q2 retail sales data was strong showing a 1.3% bounce from the -0.6% recorded in Q1. As a result, the market now prices close to a 50% chance of a 25bps RBNZ cut by year-end.

    Travelodge announces CVA proposal

    Commenting on the company voluntary arrangement (CVA) proposal in today’s announcement by Travelodge, Richard Fleming, UK Head of Restructuring at KPMG and proposed ‘supervisor’ of the CVA, said:
    “The impact of the economic downturn on Travelodge’s business has been compounded by a large debt burden and expensive lease arrangements. Today’s CVA proposal is one facet of a wider Travelodge restructuring plan to tackle those leases which are proving unsustainable, the majority of which were agreed during the pre-2008 property peaks. With the support of its lenders, shareholders and landlords, the company will be able to reshape its debt and operational structure to a model more suited to these straitened times. The company needs to secure at least 75% creditor approval for its CVA. ” Brian Green, restructuring partner at KPMG and second proposed supervisor of the CVA, added:

    “We are constantly seeking to improve and evolve our CVA structures, based on feedback from the landlord community. Accordingly, we are again including a ‘claw back’ mechanism for landlords so they can share in the turnaround of the restructured company’s future and landlords are also being offered the option of lease extensions. The detailed terms of the CVA reflect those we have advised on since the start of the downturn. No hotels will be closed on day one, nor will there be any redundancies and suppliers will continue to be paid on time and in full.

    “49 hotels, out of a total of 505, have been identified for transfer to other operators. The landlords of these hotels are being asked to accept a 45% reduction in rent until the hotels are transferred. A further 109 hotels have been identified as being viable at a reduced equivalent monthly rent of 75%. Overall, we estimate landlords of affected hotels will see a return of up to 23.4p in the £1 versus 0.2p in the £1 in the alternative of administration.”
    The key facets of the Travelodge CVA are:

    • All of the Travelodge hotels currently trading will remain open.
    • A total of 347 hotels, 2 offices and 4 restaurants will be retained at current rents and current payment terms throughout the CVA period.
    • A further 109 hotels will be retained at a reduced equivalent monthly rent of 75% for three years before reverting to a market-based rent for the remainder of the lease terms.
    • The company is seeking to transfer 49 hotels to other operators within the next six months in order to minimise the impact on landlords and other creditors. In the meantime, rent on these hotels will be reduced to 55% for six months, which is similar to the previous high profile CVAs KPMG has supervised in recent years.
    • An identical compromise is to be applied to 19 leases of premises which have been sublet to other tenants and to 18 leases of vacant sites.
    • The company will continue to pay rates, which is of great importance to landlords, until such time as replacement occupiers/operators are found.
    • The CVA will contain a so-called ‘claw back’ clause which allows the compromised landlords to share in the turnaround of the business.
    • Furthermore the 52 development sites where leases have exchanged but not yet completed will continue to be developed and proceed to opening.
    A detailed CVA proposal document is expected to be made available to Travelodge creditors via a dedicated website today. The creditors will vote on the CVA on 4th September 2012. KPMG will spend the next three weeks in talks with creditors to ensure they understand the full detail of the proposal.

    The CVA is being undertaken as part of Travelodge’s financial restructuring which will secure a long term future for the business. The key terms of the financial restructuring are as follows:
    • £75m of new cash to be injected into the Company
    • £55m of the new cash injection will be invested into a major refurbishment programme across the estate covering over 11,000 rooms and almost 200 hotels. The refurbishment programme will commence in early 2013 and continue through to summer 2014
    • Bank debt of £233m will be written off and £71m repaid, reducing total bank debt from £633m to £329m. Loan notes of £476m will be written off completely
    • Repayment date of the remaining debt extended to 2017 and cash pay interest reduced significantly to a rate of 0.25% above LIBOR through to the end of 2014

    Marriott International Opens First AC Hotel by Marriott in France

    Dressing Skamania

    Sounds like a disease doesn’t it? It’s not a disease, just a county on the Columbia River gorge. The name derives from a Chinook Indian word meaning ‘swift waters’, and the Skamania Lodge, our destination on Monday, gave super views across the river (and will be the subject of a future Review).Despite my years in hotel design, I have never supervised, or been involved in the onsite supervision of a photo-shoot before. These artists, David Phelps and his assistant Ethan, create their images for very different reasons to me. They are selling dreams to guests on behalf of the hotel, whereas my imagery is intended to show the spaces and their organisation for designers and hotelier readers of HotelDesigns ‘warts and all’. The spaces were to be dressed then photographed, an exercise in artistic perfection I am totally in awe of.

    We left early on Monday morning having spent Sunday collecting the trailer and packing the items we were delivering to the hotel. Interesting ways the US differs from the UK. Skamania is just a hop skip and a jump from Seattle, but this translates to about 250 miles. I always thought that, looking at the map, Portland was virtually a suburb of Seattle, but that is a Brit scaling the map in British terms. Like navigating around continental Europe the distances are far greater than they appear on the map, especially to a map reader used to reading Britain. The drive took us down the I5, which I have previously driven northwards to Vancouver.

    UK News

    The pound enjoyed a rally against the euro yesterday afternoon helped by UK jobless claims weakening and the Bank of England minutes showing a unanimous vote to maintain its current policy in August. Between 07:00 and 13:00 GBP moved from 1.2714 to hit a two week high of 1.2780.The single currency struggled for a number of reasons, chief among which are a change in the focus of Marian Rajoy’s pledges towards Spain’s budget deficit, BoE Governor King’s choice to avoid a discussion on UK interest rates, and the French and Italian mid-week bank holiday.

    Against the dollar GBP traded within a 42 pip range, which is the tightest range for five years. Cable saw a high of 1.57011 and a low for the day of 1.5659. In pre-market trading GBP/USD is lower than yesterday’s close, but the 12 hr range remains tight.

    The pound’s very slight rally against the dollar was helped by an unexpected weakening in UK jobless claims by 5.9k for July. It seems GBP/USD will follow the range-bound price action witnessed in June as ‘cable’ struggles close above the 200 day moving average of 1.5716. For the past three days GBPUSD has closed unchanged.

    Bank of England Deputy Governor Charles Bean has argued that the central bank’s QE programme is working, but he did concede that it is hard to quantify the impact of the program on the broader economy.

    This morning UK retail sales did not increases in July and came out with 0% growth despite London hosting the Olympics. This helped GBPUSD climb to 1.5706 and GBPEUR hit 1.2790 off the back of this as investor clearly feared to worst and a drop in sales.

    International News

    There was no data released for the Eurozone yesterday, but the dollar made gains on the back of the bank holiday nonetheless. EURUSD peaked at 1.2274 by 10:00 having begun the morning at 1.2343; whilst CPI came in roughly in line with expectations, the additional soft data for The States simply compounded USD’s advantage.

    The dollar also improved against the Yen, achieving a one month high of 78.99. It has been suggested that the better than expected U.S retail sales released week may not be enough to stop the Fed adopting further Quantitative Easing this September, until we see further signs of the economic picture the jury is still out.

    If USD continues to hold up against JPY until next week then it will represent two bullish weeks in a row and, according to ADS Securities, could be a sign of something bigger. 79.60 – 79.80 might be achieved in the near term
    Although monetary easing seems less likely in the near term for the United States, Canada has been able to tempt the market with promises expanding exports. CAD/USD traded at it’s highest level since May, better than 1.01 for the ninth day in a row.

    GBPCHF has moved clear of 1.53. July saw an 11.3% increase in the SNB’s foreign currency reserves, and this was in the pursuit of defence of the minimum exchange rate versus the Euro.
    Whilst speculation over a Greek exit from the Eurozone is nothing new it seems that the time frame is getting ever smaller, with a number of pundits arguing that Greece won’t be able to weather the volatility due after the Med’s return from summer holidays. September is considered crunch time, again.

    The Melbourne Institutes Inflation Expectations report suggests that the pace of price inflation for good and services will contract from 3.3% to 2.4%. EUR/AUD remains at multi year highs in excess of 0.85, and, versus GBP the AUD still manages to keep the pair below he 1.50 mark.

    Cauhaus Design, an architectural design firm in Frederick, Md., replaced the dark old world style lobby with a new look that blends nature’s elements with modern technology. Cauhaus Design used visually stimulating details such as textured walls, warm earth tones, marble floors, leather chairs, and natural materials including stone, reclaimed wood communal tables and planks on the walls. Other recycled materials such as natural tile accents, recycled 55 gallon drums, and hammered metals are used as artwork throughout the transformed space.

    The renovation represents the new standard for Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Inc.’s signature brand, with more than 500 hotels in 60 countries.
