Anthology launches wallcoverings Volume 6, a evocative collection of eight statement wallcoverings inspired by brutalist architecture and organic land forms for SS19… 

Anthology has presented volume 06, a stunning collection of wallcoverings inspired by industrial spaces, fabricated walls and the trend for polished natural and man-made surfaces, apposed with soft colours and delicate, feminine accents. Innovative production techniques have been used throughout with the Anthology studio contrasting plaster, concrete, burnished and hammered metals alongside polished, raw and aged facades.

“Anthology Wallcoverings 06 is an expression of how natural and manmade forms work together to create something quite exceptional,”  said Linda Thacker from the Anthology studio. “We wanted to focus on how these forms change over time and how their interaction with man modifies them further. By using materials such as poured concrete alongside bespoke techniques, we have created a compendium of organic textures, juxtaposed with how man’s involvement impacts on an element’s overall look.”

Oozing international glamour, Anthology Wallcoverings 06 comprises of eight wallcoverings, manufactured using the most technically advanced machines and state of the art production methods. A wide array of colours has been used across the collection with names such as Limestone, Pumice, Ruby, Gold, Aventurine and Quartz chosen to reflect how minerals and natural surfaces contrast and complement with the metal ores and precious stones found in mined materials that shape our environment and habitats.

Continuing with the collection theme, Anthology’s design names include Anthropic, which represents the interaction of man in the making of fabricated surfaces and the impact time has on materials, Metamorphosis, emulating the geological changes impacting on rock and stone and Pozzolana, one of the constituent parts of plaster and concrete.

Spotlight On: A Year in Review – top products launched in 2018 (Part 2)

Continuing this month’s Spotlight On feature on ‘A Year In Review’ (Products of the year 2018), we have highlighted what we believed to have been the game-changing product launches of 2018. Here is part two of our ultimate throwback…

Following popular demand of our first article that we published on the top products that have launched in 2018, we have decided to revisit the archive to dig out the many other game-changing product launches of the year.

1) Grohe: Is this the future of hotel toilets? (Recommended Supplier)

Since launching, GROHE Sensia Arena with its app-control features and three different spray patterns is becoming a popular choice among designers and hoteliers. Defined by GROHE as ‘new standard of personal hygiene’, The Sensia Arena (showcased at SLEEP + EAT) is a shower toilet, fast-becoming increasingly popular in international hotels thanks to its many unique features.

2) Skopos: Mau Loa

3) Meystyle LED wallpaper (WINNER: The Brit List 2018)

Wallpaper specialist Meystyle launched the Conductivity collection with the mission to rescue walls from the background. The company has done this by integrating bold patterns with LED lights and crystals to create deep visual experiences that totally transform walls and wallpaper into works of art. The sister duo went on to win Inspiration in Design – Innovative use of Technology at The Brit List 2018.

4) Interface go carbon neutral on all products

We love a juicy eco story here at Hotel Designs, so when we heard that contract carpet manufacturer Interface was going 100 per cent carbon neutral we hit the keyboard fast to amplify to our readers. Considering there is a major focus at the moment on manufacturing eco-friendly materials, this story has to land on our list of the top product launches and announcements in 2018.

5) Morgan: Rio 2 collection (Recommended Supplier)

Contract furniture designer and manufacturer Morgan Furniture launched its new Rio 2 collection, created in collaboration with studio Integrate, at Sleep + Eat this year. Ahead of its launch, we had exclusive access to interview the architect behind the futuristic product, Mehran Gharleghi.

6) Wilton Carpets: Kinetic Collection (Recommended Supplier)

Nature and travel inspire Banbayu’s new eco-friendly wallpapers

Just as it is in hotels itself, design plays an integral part in the Independent Hotel Show. Here we pick up three top design trends as identified by design partners, exhibitors and speakers at #IHS2018.

Back to nature

Over the years nature has played an important part in inspiring interior designers and as we move into the future, this will continue, particularly in the independent, boutique and luxury hotel sector where guests seek calm environments to relax in.

“Any design with a connection to nature will be popular,” says Katja Behre, creative director of Elli Popp, design partner to The Innovation Stage which will feature a pink tropical leaves mural and floral displays from a designer at Kew Gardens.

“People always feel comfortable with designs that connect them to nature – whether that’s plants, flowers, insects or animals,” adds Behre.

Nina Tarnowski, of Woodchip & Magnolia, Wallpaper Partner to the Show says there is a growing trend towards murals and wallpapers which ‘evoke beautiful scenes.’

The exhibitor’s Land of Milk & Honey collection of wall murals and wallpapers is inspired by English Victorian glass houses and is a fresh interpretation of the continuing trend in botanical prints.

“The growing trend towards murals and papers which evoke beautiful scenes, evoke a narrative or transport you to a magical place, lends itself perfectly to hotel interiors,” she says. “After all – what are we after when we stay in a hotel? Escapism!”

VIP hoteliers, speakers, partners at this year’s Show will be able to see the natural escapism look portrayed at The Suite where contract furniture manufacturers Valdivian promise to transport attendees to somewhere ‘between reality and imagination’ with deep purple and green walls accented with floral murals.

Timeless quality

While the pressure may be on to champion the latest interior design trends, conversely, it is the hoteliers who shun the hottest design trends and opt for classic, well-made furnishings who are truly the trend-setters.

“Invest in quality. Guests may not see it, but they will feel it,” says Rebecca at Cappellini, design partner to central networking space The Lobby at the Independent Hotel Show.

“I always try and create timeless designs, which from time to time happen to be in trend,” says Katja Behre of Elli Popp. “Most of our best-selling designs are between one to six years old and still don’t seem to fade out.”

For inspiration, look to companies such as flooring specialist Tarkett – exhibiting at this year’s Independent Hotel Show – with its Desso Carpet Collections. Its Axminster, Desso&Ex and made-to-measure rug collections are perfect for independent hoteliers and designers looking for quality, durability and design.

“The future of hotel interior design will continue to have the luxe factor with opulent fabrics taking centre stage,” says Nick Sunderland of Two’s Company Interior Design, the interior design company responsible for putting together exciting new live installation ‘The Hotel Room of The Future’ at this year’s Show.

“Customers are wanting to experience 6* comfort. Hoteliers tell us that it’s all about the detail for their guests, be it stunning sofas and chairs, beautiful curtains, baby soft towels or sumptuous linen, all these aspects have to be considered.”

Flexibility

The rise of leisure travel, mobile working and more flexible working patterns means that guests will be using hotels in more diverse ways in the future.

Daniel Corney, director at Compact Workspace, an exhibitor at the Independent Hotel Show 2018, says to improve the design of their property a ‘hotelier needs to consider different guests’ wants and needs’ so advocates the selection of flexible furniture so that space can easily be adapted for use at any event – from a conference to a wedding.

For hotels without conference and event space, the same notion of flexibility applies.

“This year we think the mobile working trend will have a big influence on hotel design,” he says. “Business travellers need appropriate places to work. So, rather than letting guests working off their lap or a coffee table in the hotel lobby, hotels should provide furniture that is both practical and comfortable to work from.”

The same flexible approach can also be applied to interior design, says Woodchip & Magnolia’s Nina Tarnowski who sees a big movement towards utilizing the fourth wall – the ceiling.

“It’s been popular for several years in interior decorating, but mostly confined to the use of paint. We’re being asked to create wall murals and papers specifically for high impact statement ceilings from interior designers, and it’s an exciting trend,” she says.

As the Independent Hotel Show creeps nearer, we have identified three major themes that visitors should expect to see at this year’s event.

Back to nature

As Hotel Designs continues to focus its attention of Hotel Concepts and Flooring, Editor of Hotel Designs Hamish Kilburn breaks down a fairly luxurious week of top stories…

The overarching theme of this week’s news has been, without any doubt, designing luxury – and how to stretch the endless possibilities of a truly luxe hotel in paradise. This week we have witnessed The EDITION brand expand its portfolio with the opening of The EDITION Bodrum. On the same theme of redefining luxe, we also peeked our head through the door of a new  hotel in Greece which is the result of a perfectly polished father-and-daughter partnership.

In addition to this, Valé Architects continued to put Designing Instagrammable into perspective. As part of a series of five articles this month, the firm’s second installment focuses on how to design a hotel for niché guests – an concept that can often seem like an impossible task.

Writing about iconic design hotels around the world is one thing, but celebrating those at the core of design decisions is an entirely different matter. That’s right, The Brit List is back! Hotel Designs has just announced its industry partner as nominations flood in and our industry in Britain gears up for another spectacular evening celebrating Britain’s best designers, hoteliers and architects.

5) Hotel Designs Brit List 2018 welcomes BIID as industry partner

The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has been named as the industry partner for this year’s Brit List.

Announced days after the news that nominations for the Brit List had opened, the event, which launched last year, acts as a platform in order to help amplify Britain’s most influential people in hotel design.

The latest collection of LED wallpaper Conductivity combines dazzling natural textures with an unprecedented use of light patterns.

Wallpaper specialist Meystyle is about to launch the Conductivity collection with the mission to rescue walls from the background. The company has done this by integrating bold patterns with LED lights and crystals to create deep visual experiences that totally transform walls and wallpaper into works of art.

“The Conductivity collection is a celebration of the ubiquitous yet mysterious power of electricity,” explained the company in a recent press release. “The designs dig into the infinitesimal world of the atom and its scientific representation as a source of visual inspiration.”

Simple geometric elements like the line and the circle are used to give sense and order to the impenetrable complexity of chemical and physical phenomena.

The Conductivity collection echoes its fascination with nature also in its choice of materials

The LED injection is inspired by the exchange of subatomic particles generating the prodigy of light itself. Different wavelengths and levels of light intensity combine into dynamic compositions suggested by the way electrons interact. From cascading lines merging into sumptuous light waterfalls, to concentric circles representing the varying configurations of the atom, each design expresses the beauty of the natural world in its most essential form.

The Conductivity collection echoes its fascination with nature also in its choice of materials, ranging from refined linens and cotton canvases to elegant silks. A variety of metal accents, notably electricity’s best companions enrich the natural properties of each texture with hand-painted details and gilded applications.

The anticipated collection will be launched at this year’s Decorex on September 16 – 19 at Syon Park, London.

Designers to experience a new dimension in wallpaper at 100% Design

Printing specialists Colourgen will exhibit at 100% Design the capabilities of the Dimense Wallpaper…

A unique technology for the production of bespoke, structured wallpaper is being launched in the UK at 100% Design. Colourgen will be showcasing a broad range of 3D custom-made wallpaper samples that demonstrate the capabilities of the Dimense Wallpaper printer in the Emerging Brands area. The company will also talk about the opportunities the printer offers for interior designers and architects looking to deliver innovative and creative new styles of 3D and embossed bespoke wall coverings for clients.

Until now, designers needed to source specialist, pre-textured media to create 3D style effects on wallpaper or go through a complex printing process to create the effect using standard printers. These methods add cost and time to a project and  limit the designer in terms of what they can do creatively. The Dimense printer simultaneously prints and creates the structure of the wallpaper in one pass and is ready to hang immediately, technology that simply hasn’t existed until now. With Dimense, the designer has 100% flexibility to create the bespoke wall covering effects they desire.

“These are really exciting times for Colourgen. Dimense is a unique and innovative product that is set to be a game changer in the digitally printed wallpaper market,” said Mark Lambert, Director at Colourgen. “We are looking forward to promoting this product to a broad audience across print, design, retail and interior decoration. Dimense offers output that won’t fade in direct light, can be cleaned without scratching or damage and is C1 fire rated, making it perfect for high traffic areas such as hotels, retail and corporate environments.  It can print at speeds of up to 20sqm/hour with a print width of 1.6m.  Dimense is an environmentally friendly technology based on latex eco-friendly inks and PVC-free structure-forming Ecodeco media.

The Dimense printer will be shipping in the UK exclusively from Colourgen in September 2018 and Colourgen will be exhibiting at the 100% Design exhibition at Olympia from 19-22 September (stand no EB44). 

Point Two Design puts wallpaper on the map

The Vancouver-based company is able to replicate any map, town or city in crisp, detailed wallpaper…

Point Two Design is a company using city planning and municipal data to create detailed wallpaper maps of any of your favourite cities. Founded in 2013 by Owen de Lancie and Emily Warkentin who studied architecture and urban planning, the company aims to put detailed wallpapers on the map of international hotel design.

Point Two Design and the team of architects, urban planners, scientists, and experts in mapping distills the data down to streets, land mass and water bodies to create highly detailed museum quality prints. This is the only company using raw GIS data and architectural tools of the trade to gather the same data that municipalities use for their urban planning – to create custom designed maps of any city or town.

No town or area is too small – Point Two Design can find it and map it down to streets an allies with technical precision. Show the person how much the memory means to you and let them be reminded of it each day with these high quality prints.

The new line of wallpaper was launched in April 2018 and each custom order receives personalised attention from PTD designers. The map wallpaper as well as satellite imagery wallpaper is available in vinyl peel and stick or classic suede wallpaper.

Wallpaper: Wallsauce launches new antimicrobial and antibacterial range

The wallpaper company launches new ranges of vibrant wallpapers that won’t breed harmful bacteria…

The cleanliness of hotels has long been debated over the years. In 2016, a report by Direct365 showed that 80 per cent of Brits would leave a hotel if it didn’t meet their hygiene and cleanliness expectations.

It is perhaps this statistic that led Wallsauce to launch an antibacterial and antimicrobial wallpaper for the hospitality sector. Designed for vulnerable environments, the material used in the products has been coated with a special formula that has been rigorously tested to ensure bacteria, mould and mildew won’t breed.
