    Easy-Sell Haven

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

UK shower manufacturer Haven, part of the Roman group of Companies, has been updating their high quality, affordable Haven range with a number of key improvements to existing products, alongside the introduction of new product additions to expand the range and further drive its popularity. Upgrades to the range include the addition of pre-coated glass protection as standard to all enclosures and bath screens in the collection. To ensure a long life and easy cleaning, all Haven Enclosures and Bath Screens are now pre-coated with Roman’s award winning glass protection pre-coating as standard. This can then be topped up and maintained by using Roman Ultra Care as part of your weekly cleaning routine to ensure total on-going protection.

Alongside this the Haven Side Panels have been updated and redesigned so they are now frameless, in line with current bathroom trends. New product additions to the range include the addition of Wetroom Panels, along with 7 new sizing options for their popular Corner Entry enclosure.

The new Wetroom Panels include 800, 900, 1000 and 1200mm width fittings and come complete with a Chrome Bracing Bar. The Panels offer 25mm of adjustment in the wall profile and are reversible for left or right hand fitting, ensuring a quick and straight forward installation.

The new Corner Entry Sizing options have been introduced following demand from UK retail, contract and Export partners, who are looking for more options than your standard 760 Corner Entry, and in particular who are now looking for an offset take on the Corner Entry. The new sizing options include 700 x 700, 800 x 800, 900 x 900, 1000 x 1000, 800 x 1200, 800 x 900 and 700 x 900mm, ensuring there is something for every sized bathroom.

The new Corner Entry and Wetroom Panels feature 6mm thick glass with bright silver framing to perfectly blend with modern bathroom décor. Both options stand at 1850mm high. They are also backed by a 10 year guarantee for added peace of mind.

The Haven range is a high quality affordable collection, which offers all the typical enclosure footprints and styles that are poplar for the UK bathroom. Haven was launched by leading UK shower manufacturer Roman limited in 2005 and is part of the Roman Group. It is now manufactured in the UK in Roman’s manufacturing plant.

David Osborne, Managing Director of the Roman Group, commented: “Our Haven range of enclosures and bath screens is going from strength to strength. Its popularity has driven continuous on-going development of the range, which sees these new options being designed and launched. It has become a champion for those looking for a genuine alternative to cheap imported enclosures and bath screens. The range is 100% designed and manufactured in the UK and this has become a key requirement now for many of our UK and Export partners who are looking for a high quality but affordable product.”

Fameed Khalique introduces a collection dedicated to light

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The LcD textile collection by Luc Druez (available through Fameed Khalique) is a limited edition of ‘hijacked’ fabrics made from reclaimed technical fibres. These awe-inspiring materials are produced in small-scale specialist workshops in Belgium, France and Italy for use in private home decoration, haute couture and interior design. Their fantastical forms also lend themselves to wider creative use: in the hotel industry, for window dressing, restaurants, theatres, and for accessories, clothing, hats and bags. Paris-based Luc Druez’s work can be found on the catwalks of haute couture fashion shows (including Christian Dior, Chanel, Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton), in the theatre and opera, and in the projects of the greatest decorators such as Peter Marino and Andrée Putman. He calls the people who bring his textiles to life in transparent settings or in movement around the body the ‘stage managers’ in his work.

In an interior setting the translucent nature of the fabrics is a perfect partner where there is a light-source, natural or otherwise, or where there is a need for blinds, screens or dividers. They have the industry standards and specifications to also be used on walls or for seating in a commercial or private environment.

What is truly unique about the collection is that all the materials used to create the collection share a technical background in one way or another, ranging from fishing-rod string to PVC. Each salvaged material holds its own unique property that is fundamental to its end form.

Fishing-rod string: creates a translucent, strong, washable yarn
Polyurethane gum: cast on to a textured yarn this produces a leather look-alike with flame-resistant properties that can be shaped and moulded
Electrician’s copper wire: oxidized in an infinite palette of colours, each one unique. The magnetic field of this metal is most in tune with the human body than any other precious metal
Synthetic raffia: this mass-dyed filament yarn is highly UV-resistant and is fully washable
PVC: transparent and available in unlimited colours, it is also naturally flame-resistant
Cellophane: ultra light, transparent and light-reflecting

Born in Belgian Luc Druez studied music at the Brussels Conservatoire before an unfortunate lapse of memory during a concert caused him to abandon his career to look for another means of artistic expression. His grandfather, a tailor, inspired him to produce textile creations that would have a tangible existence, one that was more lasting than the memory of a concert performance. He has worked as a textiles research consultant for the past 15 years.

The first LcD collection was unveiled in Paris during Luc Druez’s solo exhibition in 1995 at the Marine Biras Textile Gallery. Since then, the LcD edition has been present at trade fairs in Belgium (Intérieur show, Courtrai), Paris (Maison & Objet), Milan (Salon del Mobile), London (100% Design) and Japan (Ichinomiya Foundation), in temporary exhibitions and as hangings at shows (Lille 2004 and Designers Days, to name just two). Luc Druez also works as a textile research consultant in many textile firms and in schools. His original pieces form part of public and private collections.

A world of sustainable materials at the click of mouse

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

How can architects, designers and the building industry find out about new, sustainable construction materials? That’s the question that Jakki Dehn, a reader at London’s Kingston University, tried to address when she started work cataloguing more than 1,200 sustainable materials for use in the construction industry. The result is a materials library, Rematerialise, which is now available online at rematerialise.org. Ms Dehn has been developing Rematerialise at Kingston University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture for 18 years but it’s only now that the bulk of the library can be viewed on the library’s website.

“Until now we’ve only had a small site with about 80 products on it,” she explained. “Now there are more than a thousand materials listed – so industry professionals, teachers, researchers, students and anyone with a need to know more about ecologically-responsible design can find out about materials that use fewer non-renewable resources or can be re-grown.”

Ms Dehn began her research into sustainable materials in 1994 and received Arts and Humanities Research Council funding in 2003. As word about the resource spread, new products started arriving on an almost daily basis. Rematerialise now houses materials from 15 different countries.

“We recently received a new type of flooring material called zelfo,” she said. “The main ingredients are hemp, straw, tropical grasses and sugar cane.” Another eye-catching material is resilica, which is used in kitchen worktops as an alternative to granite or formica. It’s made mainly of glass recycled from car windscreen and building sites.

Once planners have done initial research online they can make an appointment to view the materials themselves at Kingston University’s Knights Park campus.

Representatives from Marks and Spencer were so impressed by the library’s emphasis on sustainability they invited a group of second year product and furniture design students to help furnish their new headquarters. Kingston’s design students have also worked with IKEA, The Prison Enterprise Services and Transport for London.

    Haven Moves Production to UK

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Shower manufacturer Haven, part of the Roman group of Companies, is bucking the current trend by moving the manufacture of their sister company’s range of enclosures and bath screens away from China and will instead be manufacturing the products at their County Durham factory headquarters. Roman has proudly flown the flag of British design and manufacture since they were founded in 1985. However, in a move engineered to combat low cost, low quality imports from China, Roman set up sister company Haven in 2006. Haven introduced a range of price sensitive models that are carefully designed by Roman’s team of designers, but to remain price competitive, they were manufactured in China. The company has now decided the time is right to move the manufacture of these products to the UK, so they will be produced alongside their other shower enclosures and bath screens.

This move has been enabled due to the movement of the pound against the US dollar, coupled with higher costs from the Far East, which has seen the price of imported goods experiencing great fluctuation – this is alongside increased shipping costs. Roman has made the decision to take advantage of the company’s own infrastructure and, due to the rapid growth in demand for Haven products, moving the manufacture in-house to Roman now makes sense financially for the company.

Roman began the move of Haven product manufacture to the UK in March 2011, this was then done in two phases with all remaining products being moved to UK manufacture at the end of 2011. Following the move, Roman has been backing the Stoves campaign to promote and support UK manufacture and is promoting all Roman and Haven products as being UK manufactured by displaying the Stoves ‘Made in Britain’ tick logo.

The Haven range is a low cost alternative to Roman’s own range of products which are designed with the highest specification for the luxury end of the bathroom market.

Roman Group Managing Director, David Osborne commented: “Being a British designer and manufacturer is very important to us as a company. Therefore we are extremely pleased to be able to move the manufacture of all Haven products into the main factory in Newton Aycliffe. At Roman we have over 25 years experience of manufacturing showering solutions and prefer to keep a close eye on all our products as they are built and delivered. Due to the current market conditions and the popularity of the Haven products, we are now able to make the move and bring the manufacture of these products in house. We have stringent quality control measures for all our products and this will now be applicable to all the Haven enclosures and bath screens. We are proud now to be able to promote these products as being UK manufactured.”

As a result, natural materials such as warm timber and locally-sourced stone are prevalent, and traditional patterns have been implemented from a modern perspective.Upon entering the lobby, guests are greeted by the sunflower, a folklore symbol representing the Ukraine’s fertile lands. Overhead, an abstraction of this motif shines down in the form of a chandelier crafted from glass balls in both clear and golden hues, while underfoot; a magnified reflection of the flower’s petals appears in the pattern of the cream marble floor. Overall, the lobby sparkles with a sophisticated elegance.

Following the lines of the lobby’s curved shell are two sweeping staircases with lit marble steps that cast an ethereal glow to create drama and intrigue. And the traditional Ukrainian colour pairing of blue and yellow has been harmoniously translated in the design of a sleek reception desk graced with backlit frosted panels and a gilded woven screen reminiscent of the compact florets within a large sunflower blossom.

This colour duo also extends to the other public areas through accents such as the cushions on the plush, tawny leather sofas and lounge chairs in the library, wine bar and café.

“Flavors” restaurant has a natural feel, using contrasting tones of light and dark walnut timber to create a connection with the Ukraine’s moniker as the “Bread Basket of Europe”, earned due to the region’s rich soils and abundant agricultural harvests. The sunflower shape appears again, at both the frosted glass entry door as well as in the marble inlay in the oak planks which elegantly wind through the restaurant to form the circulation areas. Fresh celadon green cushions, flaxen wallcovering and glowing pendant lights all help create a warm and relaxing dining atmosphere. Modern paintings illustrate folkloric figures, tying together the design’s overall concept and demonstrating once again how tradition and modernity can be stylishly merged.

IHG launches first hotel brand designed for the Chinese consumer

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

IHG yesterday (19th March) launched the first upscale, international hotel brand designed specifically for the Chinese traveller – HUALUXE Hotels and Resorts. HUALUXE translates from Hua, which means majestic China and luxe, representing luxury. The HUALUXE brand has been developed in response to three core growth opportunities that IHG is tapping into – consumer demand for an upscale international hotel brand that demonstrates pride in Chinese customs and reflects local tradition; the domestic China opportunity, whereby the number of domestic travellers is expected to reach 3.3 billion in 2015 and the China hotel market is projected to grow by 5-8% annually by 2030 and the international opportunity, where outbound trips from China are projected to grow from 10 million to more than 100 million in the next 10 to 15 years.

Richard Solomons, CEO IHG, said: “Building on our proven ability to build, develop and nurture brands, we are very proud to be launching HUALUXE Hotels and Resorts – a genuine first for the industry and a unique brand developed by our Chinese team that we know will resonate with the very important, fast-growing, Chinese consumer base. HUALUXE takes the best aspects of renowned Chinese hospitality and applies IHG’s international scale, powerful systems and unparalleled insights into the Chinese market to deliver a traditional high-end consistent experience.”

IHG is already the largest international hotel operator in China, with more than 160 hotels across 60 cities and sees the opportunity for this brand to be in over 100 cities in China in the next 15-20 years. IHG has already signed over 20 letters of intent which are now being converted into contracts and we expect the first hotel to be open in late 2013 or early 2014.

Keith Barr, CEO IHG Greater China, said: “IHG was the first international hotel group to enter China nearly 30 years ago, which gives us a deep understanding of the market and its consumers. We have had great success over the years with the five brands we already have in this market, and we will now leverage our experience, and the strong relationships and reputation we have with customers and owners to establish and grow HUALUXE.”

HUALUXE will offer guests a more traditional experience based on four priorities that Chinese travellers want from an upscale hotel:

Tradition – Long-celebrated traditions are reflected in every aspect of the physical hotel design and are brought to life through a refined welcome experience, deep-rooted tea culture and signature food & beverage throughout the hotel from our Fu Lin restaurant to late night noodle bar Rejuvenation- Natural surroundings from the green arrival, to the lobby garden and resort inspired bathroom helps our guests break away from the pressures of their busy lives and be reinvigorated for the challenges ahead.

Status– Recognition and respect are fundamental in Chinese society. A seamless VIP arrival, a unique Club Lounge experience and specialty food and beverage ‘hosts’ throughout the hotel serve to underpin the importance of our guests and ensure the hospitality they receive and in return give to their business partners is flawless.

Familiar Spaces – A range of public/private spaces are thoughtfully set out across the hotel. From multi-function suites, rejuvenation centre and tea house we’ve created a unique set of facilities for a wide range of social interactions and business meetings.

HUALUXE will launch initially in Tier 1, 2 and 3 cities and resort locations in China and in time, will open in major cities elsewhere in the world so that Chinese travellers can have the same experience abroad. With a multi-million dollar investment behind brand development, HUALUXE will follow IHG’s managed operating model, similar to its other IHG brands currently operating in China and will be supported with brand development and marketing funds in the first few years.

Introducing Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel and Spa

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel and Spa opens in May 2012 suspended over the Bay of Salerno on Italy’s iconic Amalfi Coast. The hotel, formerly a 17th Century monastery, will consist of 20 guest rooms and suites – all with sea views – a restaurant, a heated infinity pool, stunning landscaped gardens spread over five tiers, a historic herb garden and a private 12th Century Chapel. There will also be a spectacular and unique spa that has been created within a labyrinth of historic monastic spaces and outdoor pavilions. The hotel stands along the famed Blue Highway near the quaint fishing village of Conca dei Marini and is located close to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. It is built directly into the side of the cliff with the floors connected by a glass front elevator allowing panoramic views of the hotel’s gardens and the sea.

The hotel is owned by American Bianca Sharma, who by chance caught sight of the property whilst travelling the area in 1999. She was immediately captivated, in part because the building offered one of the most dramatic locations in the world. After acquiring the building she set about working closely with a local team of architects, engineers and historical authorities for over ten years to transform the former monastery into a luxury hotel and spa whilst maintaining the integrity of the building.

Given its heritage, the building has been respectfully restored to honour its roots and traditions. Whilst the exterior and the interior maintain the asceticism of the property, the style within is offset by warm and inviting contemporary design.

Suites are decorated with historical photographs of the area and the monastery itself, adding to the sense of history. The vaulted ceilings and arched windows of the nun’s rooms and refectory have been carefully preserved and are cleverly linked together with en suite bathrooms to create truly contemporary spaces. The grounds feature a heated infinity pool, stunning landscaped gardens, and a private herb garden, all situated over five terraced levels.

All rooms and suites have flat screen TVs, complimentary high-speed internet access, mini-bar and room service. Each is named after one of the herbs grown in the hotel’s herb garden and feature antiques hand-picked by the owner herself, sourced locally from Santa Rosa and from her travels across Italy.

Attached to the hotel by tiered gardens is the hotel’s own private 12th century chapel, making the perfect wedding venue. For a completely unique venue the entire property is available for exclusive hire, turning into a palatial Italian villa for guests personal use.

Autograph Collection Adds Three Hotels in the Southeast Region of the United States

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Autograph Collection has announced the addition of The Saint, Blue Moon and Winter Haven hotels to its growing lineup. Each of the hotels is the first to join Autograph Collection in their respective cities: The Saint Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, and both the Blue Moon Hotel and Winter Haven hotels in Miami Beach, Fla. With these properties, the collection has accumulated an impressive 32 hotels in the portfolio since its launch in 2010, with plans to include up to 60 properties by the end of 2012 in various key markets worldwide. The Saint Hotel
After an extensive $45 million renovation, and just in time for Mardi Gras, The Saint recently reopened its doors on February 9th as the first Autograph Collection hotel in Louisiana. Selected to join the collection based on its notable architectural and historical significance, the hotel was previously known as the historic 103-year old Audubon Building in the world famous French Quarter, reminiscent of early 20th century New Orleans which gave way to the birth of jazz.

Ideally located two blocks away from the early jazz clubs frequented by legendary performers, such as Louis Armstrong, the 166-room hotel features interiors decorated with large black and white photographic murals of the early 1900s, and exposed brick and bright blue and white deco style décor. Its restaurant, Sweet Olive, provides a mélange of reinvented Southern culinary classics, including Rabbit Jambalaya and Wild Boar Rillette. True to its jazz roots, The Saint also includes a jazz club called the Burgundy Bar, with a rooftop bar slated to open in the spring.

Winter Haven Hotel & Blue Moon Hotel
As of early April, the iconic Winter Haven Hotel & legendary Blue Moon Hotel will be the first properties to join the Autograph Collection in Miami Beach, Fla. The Winter Haven Hotel, initially designed by acclaimed architect Albert Anis, the property was first unveiled on Ocean Drive in 1939. The oceanfront hotel’s exclusive location lends to guests’ unique experience of the most famous and energetic street on South Beach, immersing them in the elegance of the Art Deco movement of days gone by. The hotel’s interiors are nautical inspired, an ode to the majestic ocean liners of the era, with a blend of modern touches, including terrazzo flooring, glass blocks, chrome finished railings and a grand cruise ship-inspired staircase. Winter Haven’s bar also exudes a mid-century “martini joint” vibe, with black rounded marble top tables, original wood fascia and stainless steel foot rails. In early 2012, Winter Haven will also undergo restoration while ensuring that the historical integrity of the property is conserved.

Blue Moon Hotel is an intimate boutique sanctuary replete with 1930s charm. The hotel is tucked away on popular Collins Avenue and is a seamless combination of Art Deco and Mediterranean influences coupled with modern and sophisticated touches. Conveniently located just a few steps away from the beach, boutiques and bistros on Ocean Drive, the iconic hotel remains a key staple in South Beach.

The Blue Moon Hotel is a composite of two former hotels – the Lafayette and Les Suites – and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. To ensure the historical attributes of the property are preserved, the hotel will undergo restoration efforts in early 2012.

Handmade Organic Mattress is Latest Celebrity Must Have Item

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

There are many reasons why celebrities such as Maggie Gyllenhaal, Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow have chosen to buy from innovative mattress manufacturer Naturalmat. It could be that A-listers adore the low carbon footprint, the overall healthier sleeping environment, not to mention their mattresses provide excellent levels of both support and comfort. However it’s the renewable materials contained within Naturalmat mattresses that really makes them so appealing. The most luxurious adult mattress within the Naturalmat range is the Cashmere. Coir (coconut fibre) is one of this mattress’s prime components. Naturalmat use certified organic coir from the only certified organic coconut plantation in the world. Coir fibre is incredibly resilient and fantastically springy, making it a perfect natural component for mattresses. It also ensures unbeatable airflow and excellent support to promote healthy and natural sleep.

The organic lambswool used within the Cashmere comes from Soil Association certified farms in Devon, Dorset and Somerset. It is processed on the edge of Dartmoor using water from the River Dart, which is then recycled back into the river afterwards. Naturalmat add an extract of essential oils during this process, which includes lavender, lemon and eucalyptus. These essential oils render the wool anti dust mite and anti moth. Wool is a natural fire retardant so The Cashmere is chemical free. Wool has brilliant natural properties of ventilation and insulation, as well as being wonderfully soft and fluffy.

The natural latex layer within this mattress comes directly from the milky sap of the rubber tree. Once the sap is collected, it is pumped full of air to create a foamy white froth before it is set in a large oven. The natural elasticity of the rubber gives the latex layer fantastic properties of enduring support. The open cell structure of latex foam makes it naturally antimicrobial, ensuring no dust mites can live in it, so it remains naturally breathable and totally hypoallergenic.

Finally cashmere completes the lavish list of internal layers by adding soft spring and comfort to the mattress. Cashmere is incredibly sumptuous and like wool it is a fantastic insulator.

All Naturalmat cotton covers are treated with a natural anti bed bug treatment which is derived from geraniol (citrus based). In tests this revolutionary process has proven to eliminate any bed bug that comes into contact with the cover within 72 hours. Cotton also has a unique ability to ventilate and wick away humidity and perspiration enabling the body to keep an even temperature.

Better feedback thanks to Wilton Carpets

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Tufted and woven carpets from Wilton Carpets Commercial now adorn the bedrooms and corridors of accommodation facilities at the Cranfield Management Development Centre, regarded as one of the best conference centres in the country. Following on from its previous installation of woven axminster in the corridors of another building within the Cranfield site, Wilton Carpets Commercial was asked to tender for the replacement of the corridor carpet of the hotel accommodation, which often provides rest and working facilities for top executives in its 186 bedrooms.

Cranfield Management Development Centre, comments: “At Cranfield Conference Centre we always strive to create a home away from home and each of our bedrooms has been designed to support the needs of the business executive, offering comfort and quality. In our recent refurbishment we wanted a carpet design that would complement the retro feel to impress, but not overwhelm our guests.”

For the heavy-duty requirements of corridors, designs from the FastTrack axminster collection were specified in a durable nine-row construction and in a high performance 80% wool 20% nylon mix. Originally specifying a polypropylene fibre for the bedrooms, Cranfield Management Development Centre instead selected the appearance retention and performance benefits of tufted wool-rich carpet preferring the design and quality offered by Wilton Carpets.A total of 1,500 square metres of 42oz weight carpet were installed within bedrooms.

Cranfield Conference Centre chose re-coloured Filament and Parallel designs from the FastTrack collection for the 600 square metres of corridors, while in the bedrooms the tufted bespoke linear stripe utilised a shared colour palette to create a sense of continuity throughout the building. Feedback to the carpet has been very positive, with a higher than normal ‘10’ rating in customer feedback in design and comfort.

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Signbox have seen a significant increase in demand for their digital wallpaper, as more and more companies come to appreciate that this innovative yet cost-effective display treatment can completely transform the look and feel of the office environment. The effect is all the more dramatic now that Signbox have installed a ‘state of the art’ industrial ink jet printer that prints large format graphics at a high resolution of up to 1728 dpi – fine art quality.Any image or graphics can be used to create digital wallpaper – increasingly it’s the ideal solution for new build, contemporary and refurbished interiors. The finished visual effect is striking and can be used to create a fun, stimulating, inspiring or simply aesthetically pleasing workplace environment. It’s a popular option for partition walls, walkways, breakout, meeting and reception areas.

To cater for the demand for digital wallpaper and other large format display solutions, Signbox have recently formed their EG (Environmental Graphics) Division. Commenting on this development, Mark Bartlett, Managing Director of Signbox, said, “The new division was formed to meet the rapidly rising demand for digitally printed environmental wallpaper. And so that we could be highly competitive on price we invested a six-figure sum on a new Durst Omega 1 industrial ink jet printer. Miniview: Legoland Windsor Resort

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Writing a review of an hotel that hasn’t officially opened is a tricky one as for some areas you have to fill in the missing pieces; stealing glances at site plans and looking at the snagging sheets pinned to guest room doors to get a sense of what it will look like when complete. (Note: the hotel was visited on the 21st February)Whilst the new development of the Legoland Windsor Resort is nearly finished, there are areas of the hotel which are still very much a construction site (the spa area scheduled to open later in the year and some of the guest rooms and bathrooms) but these are progressing quickly.

With occupancy of the hotel at capacity for its opening weekend (17th March) there is every confidence it will be ready and the excitement of its debut is already building with the training of new staff, groups huddled in quiet areas of the lobby and restaurant discussing operations and health and safety.

Merlin Entertainments Group, who operates other properties such as Alton Towers and Chessington World of Adventures, has added another string to its bow of themed hotels in the UK. With each hotel that opens under the Group’s name, the theming is stepped up a gear and the Legoland Windsor Resort does not fail to disappoint children and adults alike.

Undeniably created with children in mind, the specialist in-house design team at Merlin Entertainments Group have created mayhem – a wonderful, giddy experience for the children as they are encouraged to build, explore and enjoy so many of the hotel’s secrets from ‘whoopie cushion’ carpets to codes you have to crack in your room to unlock a toy.

There are some refuge areas for adults such as the Skyline bar and the separate conference area for the business market, providing some respite from the dominant primary colours of the hotel scheme but with subtle Lego influences still in its design.

Naturalmat are Recognised Finalists at DEBI Awards

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Topsham based mattress manufacturer Naturalmat were honoured at the 19th Devon Environmental Business Initiative (DEBI) Awards Ceremony, which took place at the Met Office. Naturalmat were selected as finalists in the Environmental Goods and Services Large Business Category by the DEBI judges. Television presenter Dick Strawbridge was the star attraction at the event and presented Naturalmat with their deserving certificate, as well as a bottle of locally produced sparkling wine from Pebblebed Vineyards. Naturalmat are an innovative company who create handmade organic mattresses from natural fibres and fully sustainable materials, some of the organic components used include coir, cotton and Soil Association certified organic wool. Naturalmat mattresses are supportive, anti bed bug, anti dust mite and hypoallergenic. Naturalmat customers are able to get the best night’s sleep possible, as not only are their mattresses incredibly comfortable, but customers can also rest with a clear conscience knowing that their mattress has been created with minimal environmental impact.

One of the key components within Naturalmat mattresses is coir, which comes from the only certified organic coir plantation in the world. All coconuts used are grown organically and in an environmentally responsible way. No pesticides or chemical fertilisers are used, as Naturalmat prefer to use organic compost to encourage a sustainable farming program.
The organic lambswool used within mattresses is cleaned on the edge of Dartmoor using water from the River Dart. The water is then filtered, cleaned and returned to the river without any environmental impact. The dirt is washed out of the wool and then goes into an anaerobic digester to make organic compost.

‘We strive to be great ambassadors for the county and are thrilled to receive recognition from DEBI. The judges have seen that we create a handmade high value product that has been made with minimal energy resources and environmental impact. We have taken extra time and effort to create a sustainable item and this has ultimately led to our success at this ceremony. We are very proud of our Devon roots and strive to promote this beautiful county to the best of our ability to our customers located all over the world,’ said Marie Taylor Naturalmat’s Online Marketing Manager.

Whitbread powers up green hospitality drive

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Premier Inn is leading the hospitality industry to become more sustainable with the opening of another green hotel and restaurant at Camborne in Cornwall. The 65-bedroom hotel and 210-cover restaurant is the tenth sustainable purpose-built hotel developed by Whitbread and features an array of sustainable technologies including 10 kW solar photovoltaic panels mounted onto the hotel roof to offset four electric car charging ports at the site – a major innovation for a budget hotel chain.

Chris George, Head of Energy and Environment for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said: “Camborne is a clear example of Whitbread using its expertise to lead the UK hospitality industry to become more sustainable. Our intention with the project was to learn from our existing sustainable hotels at Burgess Hill in West Sussex and Tamworth in Staffordshire and design an even more impressive and sustainable product. We have done that and demonstrated, once again, that green hotel design is possible within the mainstream market and does not have to mean ‘boutique’ or ‘expensive’.

The sustainable Premier Inn at Camborne incorporates the following energy and water saving features:

    – Earth’s natural energy – ground source heat pumps use the earth’s natural energy to cool and heat rooms and provide hot water throughout the hotel. 70% of the hotels hot water, heating and cooling will be provided in this way
    – Grey water –lowflow showerheads have been installed in the guest bathrooms and the toilets are flushed with recycled water from showers and baths to cut down on freshwater use
    – Clever lighting – very low energy LED lighting is used in the hotel reception, bars and restaurant areas. Corridor and stairwell lighting is controlled by presence detectors and energy saving key card switches are provided in the guest bedrooms to prevent energy wastage
    – Building that breathes – fresh air is delivered to each room, capturing the energy from the air it replaces
    – High levels of insulation – manufactured from naturally occurring and recycled materials are used in the walls to create exceptionally efficient thermal and acoustic insulation
    – Timber flooring – sustainable-sourced certified timber used as a replacement for concrete ground floors. This method saved over 100 tonnes of concrete compared to a similarly sized building constructed to current industry standards
    – High efficiency kitchen equipment – has been installed to reduce energy wasted during cooking and refrigeration
    – Turning natural light into energy – 10 kW photovoltaic cells located on the hotel roof that offset four electric car charging points located in the car park

Paradise Found At The St. Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Designed to complement its extraordinary beachfront proximity, The St. Regis Sanya Yalong Bay is an elegantly casual resort that will introduce South China to an elevated dimension of luxury and sophistication. The St. Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort offers 401 guest rooms and suites along with 28 exquisite beachside villas. The contemporary architecture by Brennan Beer Gorman Architects, the St. Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort was inspired by the mythical concept of two intertwined dragons. From the soft concave arch of the arrival pavilion to the repeated form of the “dragon’s back” incorporated in the guestroom wings, the St. Regis presents a dramatic shape on the skyline, echoing the ridgeline of the surrounding mountains and the movement of the waves.

Inspired by its nautical surroundings, DiLeonardo’s approach to the hotel’s interiors celebrate the sea, sand and nearby marina. The impressive Porte Cochere and main lobby are expansive, clean-lined voluminous spaces that have been appointed with clean, rich wood finishes evoking the world’s most luxurious yachts. Additional nautical-inspired detailing elements include sand-colored exotic stones as well as upholstered furnishings that mimic those found on the elegant trans-ocean liners of the past. Finely finished woodwork and polished metalwork contrast with rough-cut stone creates an interesting juxtaposition that is both luxurious and relaxing.

The spacious guestrooms and villas feature sweeping views of the sea, marina and surrounding mangroves. Designed as relaxing island sanctuaries, the guest rooms evoke a sophisticated and relaxing “guest quarters by the sea” environment. The spaces are appointed with an eclectic collection of fine furnishings and artifacts collected from around the world. The creamy neutral color palette is accentuated by local raw silks and tonal damasks with vibrant, rich colors that add dimension to the room. The high-gloss wood and polished metal finishes contrast with the use of natural materials that reflect the region’s plush and unique local surroundings. Elements of nautical whimsy, such as yacht cleats for hanging clothing, add character and familiarity. The contemporary bathrooms are appointed with local materials, including indigenous “woven” stone tiles, onyx vanity tops and Macore wood. A generously proportioned shower and contemporary soaking tub provide stunning views outdoors.

Fameed Khalique introduces Chella luxury outdoor fabrics to the UK

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Fameed Khalique, specialist in innovative and inspiring surface materials introduces a pioneering collection of luxury outdoor fabrics by Chella Textiles to the UK. This outstanding and exceptionally durable collection contains the industry’s first solution-dyed acrylic fabrics guaranteed not to fade and to withstand harsh treatment from sun, rain, freezing temperatures and wear and tear.

    The technical bit…
Whilst most fabrics are created from fibres that are initially colourless and then dyed, these solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are created when a liquid acrylic solution is combined with precisely-determined colours before the coloured liquid is transformed into fibres.

    The fabrics are unique…
These fabrics marry technological innovation with style with over 200 traditional and contemporary designs available, including Solids & Textures, Stripes, Sheers and Patterns. Despite being made out of acrylic, the fabrics recreate natural fibre constructions like linen, velvet and chenille so they look and feel astonishingly natural and are supremely soft to the touch. The fabrics offer something new, beautiful and of utmost quality for both residential and commercial projects, from hotel suites, terraces, pool and spa areas, bathrooms, family rooms and nurseries.

All fabrics are guaranteed not to fade when exposed to sunlight or attract mildew, meaning they can be left out all year round, even bleach won’t affect the solution-dye colour and all fabrics are machine-washable. Custom bespoke patterns and colours are available upon request from Fameed Khalique.

    Finishing touches…
Woven from the same solution-dyed acrylic yarns, the Finishing Touch Trim Collection is designed to withstand the elements come rain or shine. The collection is comprised of seven styles of braid, tape, fringe and tie-backs of hand-carved mahogany and opalized quartz, which complement every colour palette.

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Joining the elite ranks of 100-year-old iconic hotels such as The Savoy in London, The Plaza in New York, and The Fairmont Banff Springs in Alberta, Canada is no small feat. But in 2012 Fairmont will be celebrating not one, but two centennial birthdays: Ottawa’s Fairmont Château Laurier on June 1 and Boston’s The Fairmont Copley Plaza on Aug. 19. Both grand dames will be offering special offers, events and activities to highlight the history and grandeur that have graced their halls over the past century. Witness to History
Ottawa’s famed castle, Fairmont Château Laurier, opened its doors June 1, 1912 with building costs totaling $2 million and guestrooms priced at $2 per night. The Fairmont Copley Plaza, Boston is a landmark in Back Bay’s Copley Square. In 1912 Mayor of Boston John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, President Kennedy’s grandfather, presided over a reception of more than 1,000 guests to open the hotel. The total cost to open the hotel was an extravagant sum of $5.5 million. Since the ‘Gilded Age’ of their opening through modern times, both hotels have hosted heads of state, celebrities, dignitaries and guests from around the world.

    Renovations & Restorations
Both Grande Dames are also getting facelifts for their celebrations. Scheduled for completion in spring 2012, The Fairmont Copley Plaza is undergoing a restoration that will include all guestrooms and suites, Fairmont Gold, and a new 3,000-square-foot rooftop health club. The project also includes the Lower Lobby meeting space and enhancements to hotel’s grand lobby and ballrooms.

The Sheraton Heathrow Hotel Completes Multi-Million Pound Public Area Refurbishment

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The Sheraton Heathrow Hotel has put the finishing touches to a multi-million pound refurbishment of its public areas. The refurbished Sheraton Heathrow now boasts a completely new reception and lobby lounge, two new bars, a new restaurant and a new cafe complete with self-service technology. Designed by Nico Yiannikkou of premier interior design company Y2DC, the renovated spaces feature comfortable, open areas connected through a common theme of travel and exploration. Inspired by the Middlesex countryside around Heathrow Airport which is famed for its orchards, all of the new restaurants and bars at the hotel take their name from the traditional English apple.

The main restaurant, The Orchard, will offer all-day dining in a comfortable, modern setting. Beautiful timber partitions and interconnecting screens in the ceilings help to create more intimate seating areas, ensuring the large space works just as well whether one or one hundred guests are seated. Playing on the location of the hotel, a ‘globe’ chandelier is suspended between the screens, whilst the feature table at the venue entrance is inspired by aviation design. The restaurant serves traditional English dishes prepared in a contemporary style including prime English steaks and home-made breads from a traditional stone fired oven. A special accent is put on locally-sourced, quality English Beef, offered in three prime cuts.

With its travel-inspired decor, the hotel’s main bar has been named the Discovery Bar and will focus on beers, wines served by the glass and cocktails. The bar offers a range of light fare and snacks in the form of English tapas. Decoration in the Discovery Bar includes old trunks and suitcases as features, furniture fabrics imprinted with feint vintage postcard texts of by-gone travellers and a wall mural depicting an art deco map of the world. With its focus on local produce, the Discovery Bar menu features local ales from Windsor and Marlow.

The Orange Lounge is the hotel’s brand new cocktail bar offering a quieter place in which guests can relax. The dark colours and central fireplace invite guests to sit down and unwind regardless of their time zone. The partitioning of this space again uses timber screens with the design inspired by the idea of aircrafts taking off and landing. Artwork on the theme of aviation in the form of black and white prints serves to enhance the sense of space. Signature drinks include a selection of local ales, wines by the glass and cocktails.

The transformed Sheraton Heathrow will also offer the Link Café, which combines the Link@SheratonSM experienced with Microsoft, a unique communications hub in the lobby which provides complimentary WiFi and PC workstations so guests can surf the internet while on the road, with a self-service food and beverage area.

The public area refurbishment at the Sheraton Heathrow is part of the Sheraton brand’s multi-year revitalisation effort which has seen Sheraton and our owners invest more than USD $6 billion in opening new hotels and renovating existing Sheraton properties across the globe.

Located within easy reach of all of the Heathrow Airport terminals, the Sheraton Heathrow features 426 guest rooms, a signature Sheraton Club Lounge, Sheraton Fitness programmed by Core Performance and a modern Conference Centre with 21 meeting rooms.

Luxury lighting scheme by Chelsom for Windstar fleet

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Working alongside cruise specialists McVitty Interior Consultants of London and Trimline Interiors of Southampton, Chelsom have been appointed to manufacture and supply all the cabin lighting across the Windstar fleet, comprising Wind Surf, Wind Spirit and Wind Star. As part of the multi-million dollar fleet refurbishment plan which was launched last Autumn, Chelsom is also in the process of designing bespoke public area lighting on this luxurious fleet.

The bespoke cabin lighting was designed to exude luxury, and create ambience to enhance the rich interior scheme created by McVitty. Being involved by the designers right from the concept stage allowed Chelsom to play a pivotal role in the design, ensuring that the product was perfect for a marine environment.

The bespoke combination wall brackets which offer general bedside lighting together with directional flexi-arm LED reading light, have already been supplied for Wind Surf. Finished in a beautiful satin brass finish, the brackets are completed by silk pebble coloured shades. For the lounge area, the designers specified heavily ribbed blown glass table lamps from Chelsom in smoked grey colour with matching silk shades. For stability, the lamp bases were adapted to be securely fitted to the wooden furniture.

In April, when the Wind Star and Wind Spirit yachts reach wetdock, the same specification of lighting will be installed in both ships, along with additional public areas lighting. For the reception areas, Chelsom is putting together prototype design proposals with McVitty Interiors for large scale central reception pendants which will be stunning.

Will Chelsom, who heads up the Chelsom cruise division comments, ”We are extremely happy with the lighting products we’re supplying to the Windstar projects. In my opinion, McVItty and Trimline Interiors have created the most striking and luxurious looking Cruise Ship cabins I have ever seen. I am so glad that Chelsom can claim to be a part of this superb trio of refurbishment projects.”

Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa, which opened in the pristine and undisturbed Gaafu Alifu Atoll in April 2011, is delighted to achieve Silver EarthCheck Certification – making it one of the few resorts worldwide to gain such recognition.Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa was the first property in the Maldives to follow the EarthCheck Planning and Design Standards during construction, which resulted in the resort becoming bronze benchmarked in 2009 by EarthCheck – the world’s leading sustainable travel and tourism certification organisation. Following an extensive audit in 2011, the resort has now reached the programme’s coveted Silver certification.

As the Hyatt Group’s first sustainable tourism development, one of the primary objectives was to ensure that the resort was planned, designed and constructed in an environmentally sensitive manner. In addition, it also required that during operation, the resort should take great care to minimise its effect on the environment, enhance the Maldivian experience and to be as energy efficient as possible.

Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa was highly commended by EarthCheck for the resort’s strong environmental and social responsibility programme, in particular for having an established system for energy conservation, coral and endangered species protection, solid waste management, using natural materials, community initiatives, and the resort’s dedication to guiding and encouraging local agriculture. The audit also identified local employment at the resort exceeds the Government requirements – one of the few properties in the south of the Maldives, it has dramatically increased employment opportunities in this region of the country.

This achievement follows the recent launch of the Hadahaa Community Project, which enables employees to continue to contribute to their communities despite living away fromhome, demonstrating their commitment to Hyatt Thrive, the company’s global corporate responsibility platform.

Red Hot Bluetooth Innovation from Wandsworth

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The Wandsworth Group has launched a Bluetooth version of its innovative ‘i-fi’ docking station, enabling wireless MP3 play-back for any Bluetooth enabled device.Believed to be the first Bluetooth innovation of its kind on the UK market, the discreet 50mm x 50mm wall mounted-unit is designed to pair with any Bluetooth phone or music media storage device capable of streaming music data files via Bluetooth technology when the user comes within range. Unlike Wandsworth’s existing i-fi unit, the Bluetooth unit does not include a docking station as it can communicate with the device anywhere in the room and within the Bluetooth range and the user simply selects the music playlist or podcast file from their device to play it through either the inbuilt, external or speaker system linked to an existing Hi-Fi set up via the aux output.

Explains head of sales of The Wandsworth Group, Andy Howe “Space-efficient, wall-mounted docking stations have become increasingly popular in the wiring accessories market because so many people now store their music collection on their mobile devices rather than in hard copy. Our new Bluetooth i-fi takes that thinking one step further and allows the user to play back their MP3 files without attaching their device to the unit, which also ensures that unit design can be smaller and less obtrusive than anything else available.”

While many docking station products are compatible only with Apple devices, the new Wandsworth Bluetooth i-fi can be used with any Bluetooth-enabled device that plays MP3 files, including mobile phones, android phones, tablets, laptops and MP3 players. The unit can be installed along with a Wandsworth speaker system or can be retrofitted to operate with existing amplifiers and is available in any Wandsworth ‘Series Two’ finish or as a custom-made special.

Howe continues: “The flexibility of this unit makes it ideal for the hotel sector or student accommodation developments because it is compatible with such a wide range of devices and has such a small plate size. We also expect it to be a popular product for the residential market where multiple units would allow the end user to move from room to room with uninterrupted play back and in the commercial sector it could offer some serious wow factor for the boardroom.

This ingenious device even has its place in the world of medicine where, installed in operating theatres, it could provide some peaceful background music for minor operations allowing the surgeon to listen to his or her favourite classical track to relax the mood of the room.

Once again Wandsworth has proved the company’s drive to innovate and our ability to keep pace with both developments in technology and consumer trends.”

The Grosvenor Hotel Victoria draws back curtain on the ‘Courtesan’s Boudoir’

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

London’s oldest railway hotel, The Grosvenor Hotel, marks the completion of its 18-month renovation this month with the opening of an opulent suite commemorating its most infamous former guest. The creation of ‘Courtesan’s Boudoir – The Cora Pearl Suite’ celebrates a significant moment in the hotel’s 150-year history, when the feted Parisian courtesan Cora Pearl was turned away from its doors.

Cora, who counted royalty among her illustrious clientele, made a rare visit to London in 1870. On arriving at Victoria Station – the gateway to London – she booked a suite at The Grosvenor Hotel only to be refused entry when stories of her hedonistic lifestyle surfaced.

The luxurious rococo-themed suite draws its inspiration from the French interior styling of the late 1800s.

Amid the glass chandeliers, feather trimmed lamps, damask wallpaper and silver finished French inspired furniture is a free-standing ‘infinity’ bath, elevated on a marble tile plinth – a replica of the personally engraved, bronze bath that Cora had specially cast for her in Paris and which she famously filled with vintage champagne in which to bathe with her suitors.
The Grosvenor Hotel’s general manager, Michael Parker, explained:

“Much of the work to restore the hotel has been in association with English Heritage. The incredible architectural features have all been fully restored – including the gold leaf finish on the lobby’s original white marble pillars. The hotel now truly captures the charm and grandeur of the era in which The Grosvenor Hotel first opened its doors, and we felt that to celebrate, it was fitting to mark one of the many rich stories from our history. Cora had an amazing story – rising from poverty to become one of the most notorious figures amongst the elite of her time. The suite is perfect for anyone who would like to discover the luxury and glamour of Victorian high-society.”

Roman adds Ultra Care Pre-coating Glass Protection

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Leading UK shower designer and manufacturer, Roman, have given their enclosures and bath screens the ultimate in glass protection by adding Roman Ultra Care pre-coating to their products. This is a unique glass protection system that has been designed to work in tandem with their award-winning Roman Ultra Care in a bottle.Roman were one of the early adopters of glass protection technology, originally launching this back in 2001. Since then the company have progressed their offer in a number of ways and have been using Roman Ultra Care in a bottle, which won the House Beautiful award for best cleaning product back in 2009. Roman believes Ultra Care is the most durable system on the market as it can be maintained and topped up on an on-going basis by the consumer.

The shower manufacturer have now taken this glass protection one step further by adding Ultra Care pre-coating as standard to every Roman enclosure and bath screen, from each of their ranges (including their sister company Haven’s products).

Roman has developed a glass protection system that is designed to become stronger and more effective over time. Unlike most other glass protection systems, the pre-coat can be maintained with Roman Ultra Care in a bottle – this builds up the coating every time you clean. Many other pre-coated glass protection systems diminish in their effectiveness over time, depending on how often the shower is used and how often it is cleaned.

Roman Ultra Care pre-coat and Ultra Care in a bottle work by creating a chemical barrier that provides protection against the build-up of grime, lime scale and stains. The protective barrier means water glides off the glass with ease. This results in the protected surface remaining easy to clean by simply applying a mild detergent and wiping with a damp cloth.

By topping up the protection of the pre-coat, the life of the Roman product will be considerably prolonged. The use of the glass protection system also eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals and cleaning products during the cleaning process which is beneficial to the environment.

To ensure your glass protection is given a kick-start, Roman also includes a complimentary starter bottle of Ultra Care in the box, with any purchase from their Sculptures, Desire or Orbital Ranges.

David Osborne, Managing Director at Roman commented: “Roman Ultra Care is an award winning bathroom protector and it has a 10 year track record for successfully protecting our extensive product range. The addition of the pre-coating is just the next step in the protection of the enclosure – it gives guaranteed glass protection from day one. Being a UK manufacturer we have the flexibility to easily add additional features to our products. The pre-coating is now added during the manufacturing process on our factory flow lines. We are pleased to offer this fantastic feature with no additional cost for our customer or the end user.”

Thanks to the vision of owner Georgi Akirov, the meticulous metamorphosis was overseen by designer Piero Lissoni. Focussing on a mix of old and new with a locational emphasis has resulted in a careful layering of classic and contemporary styles. Lissoni sought to pay homage to the building’s history while adding his own inimitable touches such as the glass-covered atrium and ubiquitous exposed beams. The property, which is part of the new luxury hotel collection The Set, pays tribute to the Amsterdam Conservatorium’s legacy as soothing classical music selections echo through its vaulted ceilings. Several communal dining outlets such as the Conservatorium Brasserie & Lounge and Tunes Restaurant & Bar by Schilo, offer guests the opportunity to enjoy convivial outings and discover new local flavours and culinary talents. The 129 rooms and suites provide a respite for the weary while the Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Center promises to replenish and refuel in the most inspired of settings.

    Italian Touches
First designed by revered Dutch architect Daniel Knuttel at the turn of the 19th century, the Conservatorium’s well-known structure served as a major bank for 77 years before becoming Amsterdam’s premier music conservatory from 1983–2003. Intrigued by its architecture and past, Lissoni uses the building’s historic backdrop to create a hybrid of modern heritage. The original lofty ceilings have been left intact in almost half the rooms and transformed into stunning duplexes with large windows and exposed structural beams. A spectacular element is the courtyard covered entirely in glass, which is indicative of much of the hotel’s design, creating a wonderful contrast between the old and the new, between the classic and the modern.

    Musical Heritage
Music also plays a big part in the hotel’s aesthetic and connects the building’s past with its present. For instance, the Concerto Suite boasts a Steinway Baby Grand piano.

Location and rates Conservatorium Hotel Amsterdam has a prime location in the cultural centre of the Museumplein, next to the Stedelijk Museum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. The hotel is situated opposite the Royal Concertgebouw and parallel to the prestigious shopping district of P.C. Hooftstraat and the famous Vondelpark.

    New Lamps from Old

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

It used to be said that if you stood at the base of the statue of Eros you stood at the centre of British Empire. It was also believed that if you stood there long enough you would meet someone you knew. These days it sometime feels as if everyone from the old Empire wants to test this saying as the crowds of tourists flock to London. Piccadilly Circus punctuates one end of Regent Street – the other ends in another Circus, Oxford Circus.

The guys responsible for this area are no clowns though, and the Crown Estate has embarked on a £1 billion remodelling of a street that has moved from the genteel decay of my first visits in 1960 into the throbbing heart of another Empire – a retail empire. Piccadilly Circus is the area onto which faces the Quadrant group of deco buildings that has at its heart the former Regent Palace hotel, now known as Quadrant 3, together with the Café Royal, Charles Fortes first major property buy and now part of a major restoration programme of slightly mind boggling ambition. The team of architects – Atkins, Dixon Jones and Donald Insall, have been backed by Crown Estates in challenging circumstances, undertaking an extremely sensitive demolitions programme with the the retention of key external facades . The grade 2 listed interiors of the original Regent Palace Hotel have been kept but now sit a floor lower than originally.

The original Regent Palace Hotel was built by the Lyons Corner House business as a cheap hotel in the centre of the city, and its main bedroom block was considered no longer fit for purpose. Only the facades of the buildings fronting the street remain, their beautifully understated cream Edwardian stonework cleaned and gleaming as no building in London did in the days of smog and coal fires. Behind the facade has taken place what one hotelier inelegantly referred to elsewhere as a ‘gut job’ and a new gleaming office block has risen in the central part of the site, much of it already let to organisations such as Al Gore’s Generation Investment Management

A complete carpet solution at the luxurious Crowne Plaza Colchester

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

As a preferred supplier for AB Hotels, Lano Flooring Solutions was called upon to provide carpet throughout the 194-bedroom Colchester Five Lakes Resort.

Now run by worldwide hotel group, Crowne Plaza, the Colchester Five Lakes Resort is the first of its kind in the UK for the chain and provides sporting and conference facilities, luxurious accommodation and fine dining for business and pleasure travellers. Working closely with AB Hotels and Richard Daniels Design (RDD) to develop a suitable flooring scheme, Lano Flooring Solutions manufactured and supplied carpet for guestrooms, corridors and public areas, varying construction and wear quality to provide maximum value from the 5,000m2 of carpet required.

For public areas and corridors, Lano Flooring Solutions manufactured a total of 2,500m2 of bespoke axminster carpets. Working from provisional sketches from RDD, Lano finalised patterns and colours before weaving five different contemporary designs in an 80% wool 20% nylon mix for maximum durability and appearance retention. Ranging from linear designs to full blown circular motifs, the bespoke carpets are varied, reflecting the diverse usage of public areas throughout the hotel.

Within corridors, 1,700m2 of 10-row has been installed to cope with the wear from narrow traffic lanes, while high footfall levels and wear experienced in 800m2 of public areas is being combatted by an 11-row construction, currently one of the most durable axminster carpet constructions available.

Within the bedrooms of Colchester Five Lakes, Lano turned its attention to the value-orientated tufted graphics with the Suite collection specified in a 1,100g/m2 pile weight. Again, in a performance combination of 80% wool 20% nylon, the carpet provides a durable solution for less intensive areas such as bedrooms, helping to maximise value throughout the location.

Kevin Beasant, UK Contract Sales Manager, Lano Flooring Solutions, said:

“Set in over 300 acres, in close proximity to London and with two 18-hole golf courses and a spa, the Crowne Plaza Colchester Five Lakes Resort stands apart as a destination for business and pleasure travellers looking for a luxurious place to stay with some of the finest facilities in the South East of England. With this in mind, it is imperative that the flooring throughout the venue reflects the ambience and quality of the establishment and so working closely with AB Hotels and RDD we developed a scheme that maximised value where suitable and provided durability where necessary. Using both stock and bespoke qualities, the scheme provides the Crowne Plaza Colchester Five Lakes resort with a carpet that makes for an environment that is welcoming and purposeful.”

Onyx Hospitality Group Presents New Spa Brands

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Thailand-based hotel management company ONYX Hospitality Group offers two innovative and unique spa brands as part of its strategic growth plans. With each brand catering to very distinct market segments; Breeze Spa is the ‘fun’, mid tier offering whilst Maai Spa will offer exclusive, luxury spa experiences for a discerning, spa-savvy clientele. Stemming from a comprehensive review of the existing spa offering and with due consideration given to ONYX’s strategic growth plans, a conclusion was reached that two brands were needed.

    Breeze
Conceptualised from the premise that happiness is a key foundation for wellness, Breeze Spas will appeal to a wide-reaching demographic, encompassing the seasoned spa aficionado to the wellness newcomer. The spa brand presents a simple yet innovative Mood Therapy Treatment concept. Designed to be a complete sensory experience, each treatment is aligned with a carefully chosen traditional body therapy or massage technique as its centrepiece, enhanced by specific aromatherapy oils, herbal teas, musical selections and even colours to provide a package that delivers the mood each guest is looking to bring to their life.

In addition to a range of customised treatments and products under the Breeze label, the spas will also feature offerings by leading Thai natural skincare brand, Panpuri and the award-winning Italian spa products brand, Comfort Zone.

The first Breeze Spa will open its doors at Amari Hua Hin in June 2012. Plans are also underway to refurbish the existing spas in all Amari properties to fully encapsulate the vibrant Breeze design.

    Maai
This is an exciting luxury wellness brand borne from the tradition of authentic Thai healing combined with modern day science, all encased within the elegance of Thai silk. Offering a combination of private suite based treatments, unique Thai herbal programmes and advanced skincare science, Maai Spas offer results-driven beauty treatments and technology delivered through personalised programmes, amidst a backdrop of contemporary luxury.

Maai Spa’s authentic treatments draw from the 2,500-year history of indigenous Thai healing with influences from Indian, Chinese and Tibetan healing practices. The traditional therapies will be combined with modern scientific wellness.

In an interesting parallel, the origin of Thai silk follows a similar path across Asia as the country’s ancient healing techniques. Thus, Maai (which means silk in Thai) blends the attributes and traditions of this sumptuous, handcrafted fabric to create luxurious, elegant spa surroundings.

These two distinctive spa brands will enable ONYX to enhance the facilities within its own portfolio of managed properties whilst also offering management services for these spas to be set up in third party hotels, standalone luxury residential or mixed used developments and even airport lounges.
