Chilli Banana Goes Hot For New Low Energy Kitchen

Daniel Fountain

When Chilli Banana relocated their Thai restaurant to the centre of Wilmslow, Steve and Mai appointed Dawnvale to refurbish the entire ground and first floor premises.A key factor to this project was that low energy had to be the main focus of all the equipment and services. So our bar and kitchen designers set about utilising the latest low energy and energy reduction equipment.

The newly launched KERS heat recovery system was installed. This clever system recovers wasted heat created by the cook line and converts it back to potable hot water at over 50 degrees, reducing their carbon emissions as well as expensive bills.

A bespoke low energy one piece induction wok station was commissioned; featuring 5 energy saving induction woks, with water faucets and refrigerated draws all incorporated in a seamless stainless steel top achieves and impressive 80% energy saving on conventional woks.

Add too all of this, the LED lighting and controls Dawnvale provided Steve, Mai and the team at Chilli Banana a magnificent low energy kitchen.

Exceptional skills needed for lighting at new London restaurant

Daniel Fountain

Dernier & Hamlyn recently worked with Martin Brudnizki Design Studio to produce banquette lamps for the new Jackson +Rye restaurant, café and bar in Wardour Street, West London. Whilst at first glance they may look like fairly standard light fittings, the craftsmanship skills involved in their manufacture at Dernier & Hamlyn’s London factory are believed to be unique in the UK. Each of the shades was made from sheets of brass which were folded by hand. This was an extremely time consuming and labour intensive task but the only way in which the beautiful end result could be achieved with such brilliance.LED lamps have been used for the benefits they bring in long-life and energy saving, with filters fitted so that the light generated is warmer than that usually emanated from LED. The lamps were finished in antique brass.

Nicholas Jeanes, Design Director at Martin Brudnizki Design Studio says: “When we want lighting that goes above and beyond our normal requirements for quality and innovation, Dernier & Hamlyn is always the natural choice and we call on them again and again for many of our most prestigious projects.”

Made in Cornwall…for Chelsea. Cornish Upholstery Company has luxury London market sewn up

Daniel Fountain

Penwith Upholstery, based in Redruth, is expanding after winning a clutch of contracts to upholster interior furniture at several up market venues in the capital.Their success story started last summer after the company secured a contract to supply bespoke seating for the Tonteria nightclub in Sloane Square, the latest venture for nightclub owner Guy Pelly and close friend of Prince William.

From that job, word of Penwith Upholstery’s specialist skills in ‘banquette’ (bench style) seating spread among the members of London’s exclusive after hours set.

Orders for jobs at more high-end venues started coming in and today business from London clientele accounts for more than 80% of the company’s turnover.

Some of their latest commissions include The Chelsea Brasserie in Sloane Square, Margaux Wine Bar in Chelsea, Amika boutique nightclub in Mayfair and Veeraswamy, London’s oldest Indian restaurant, in Regent Street.

Chartered Surveyors Miller Commercial have just negotiated a new lease for Penwith Upholstery to relocate to a larger unit, more than twice the size of their previous base, at Bells Business Park, Cardrew.

Sarah Bawden, who owns Penwith Upholstery, has been overseeing the move. She says finding bigger premises was vital in order to service the increase in the volume of work.

She says “Today’s success is a very different story from the difficult times we were facing in 2011. The decision we took then, to focus our efforts on niche up-market venues has paid off.

Clients in and around London are choosing us over the larger longer established upholstery firms.

I think they appreciated the ‘Cornish connection’ and the more bespoke, niche nature of our company.

Closer to home we undertake upholstery projects in the Healthcare and Marine sectors. Doctors and dental surgeries, work for the MOD and merchant ships.

But here too we’re getting more commissions at the high-end of the market, working in association with Pendennis Shipyard on the interior of luxury super yachts.

Things are really looking good for us right now. We’ve taken on more staff and are considering branching out into soft furnishings which would complement our existing work.

Whatever new business our future brings we plan to stay based firmly in Cornwall.”

Spotlight on Lumin8 from Roman

Daniel Fountain

Leading British shower designer and manufacturer, Roman, has launched a brand new range of 8mm thick glass Shower Enclosures and Bath Screens, Lumin8. Lumin8 has been meticulously designed to solve a variety of space restrictions in the bathroom, whilst illuminating the showering experience for the whole family. This stunning new collection from Roman provides showering solutions to meet all requirements, whilst bringing a touch of luxury into the bathroom. The Lumin8 collection comprises of both inward and outward opening doors, sliding doors and a series of intricately designed power shower approved Bath Screens. The range includes diverse options of designs and sizes available to provide something for every bathroom, whilst also being extremely competitively priced.

The Lumin8 range stands elegantly at a height of 1950mm with toughened 8mm thick glass. Detailing is fundamental to the Lumin8 range as it ensures its unique style and highest quality is captured in each product. The original detailing includes, the individual ‘wrap around’ chromed top caps, the clear low profile seals and magnet seals to the bright silver profiles for a modern finish. Roman handpicked the finest materials to craft exceptional components to manufacture this exclusive new range.

The Lumin8 range provides an ideal solution for smaller bathrooms with the One Door Quadrant and Two Door Quadrant, which make the most out of your corner space. Both will sit beautifully in the corner of your bathroom, with unobtrusive sliding doors. They include smooth running roller bearings for a smooth action and a ‘quick release’ door system for easy access cleaning. To ensure they fit into most bathroom spaces they are available in an offset shape for a larger showering area where space allows.

The Lumin8 collection includes a Pivot Door Shower Enclosure, which creates a clever and efficient space saving solution. The door can be installed into an alcove or with a side panel for the corner situation. An inline panel can also be used on the Pivot Door to allow a larger enclosure to be created.

The Lumin8 range incorporates an effortless action Sliding Door which again offers easy access as it does not project in to the bathroom area or the showering space. It exudes luxury with the smooth gliding door action and generous door opening. A Bi-Fold Door Enclosure is also featured in the Lumin8 range with its practical inward opening doors to allow more useable space and minimal intrusion into the bathroom area, where fixtures and fittings may need to be avoided.

Completing the Lumin8 range is the Frameless Bath Screen and the Frameless Hinged Bath Screen. The Frameless Bath Screen presents a minimalist designer look, whilst the Frameless Hinged Bath Screen features stylish chromed hinges. Both have a toughened glass thickness of 8mm, they are power shower approved for a superior showering experience and practically designed to fit around your current fixtures and fittings.

As with all Roman Enclosures and Bath Screens, the Lumin8 range will be manufactured in the UK. All products also incorporate pre-coated glass protection as standard, for easy cleaning and lasting clarity. They also carry Roman’s service backed Truelife Lifetime Guarantee.

David Osborne, Managing Director at Roman, commented: “We are very excited to finally unveil our new range of 8mm thick glass Shower Enclosures and Bath Screens. Destroying Lighting Myths

Daniel Fountain

Robert Chelsom, MD of Chelsom Ltd, dispels some common lighting myths including why there is so much negativity around compact fluorescent lamps, the current LED trend within the hospitality market and perceived Far Eastern quality issues. Q? Why are people negative about compact fluorescent lamps?
A: In my opinion it is almost as though compact fluorescent lamps came out 20 years too early in terms of development. What I mean is, there were certain facets of compact fluorescent lamps which didn’t do the right job when they first hit the market but all that has now changed:

Compact fluorescent lamps are bulky – Yes the first ones were but there are now shapes and sizes which are at least as small as any old fashioned incandescent lamps including candle shapes.
Compact fluorescent lamps give cold light – Absolutely untrue today. CFLs are available in a wide range of colour temperatures, both warmer and cooler than incandescent equivalents. The range of 2,700K to 3,000K covers what most of us would call warm white and this gives an identical colour temperature to incandescent and the two would be indistinguishable in conjunction with a fabric shade.
Compact fluorescent lamps flicker – Yes originally with mechanical control gear but not at all today with modern electronic control gear.
Compact fluorescent lamps are slow to reach full light output – In the early days, yes, but modern CFL’s are mostly called ‘instant start’ meaning they reach full light output in a matter of seconds rather than minutes.
Compact fluorescent lamps are not dimmable – Not true – most manufacturers offer a self-ballasted dimmable lamp, for example the Osram 18W which dims very well with a good dimming range. For non self-ballasted lamps, dimming control gear is readily available although can be costly and somewhat bulky.
Compact fluorescent lamps are expensive – CFLs have continued to fall in price since the day they were launched and now represent excellent value for money against other light sources.
Compact fluorescent lamps are stolen from hotel rooms – In the early days when they cost £12 each and were a relative rarity, maybe that was the case. Today they are not worth stealing cost-wise and most people have got them at home anyway.

Q? Are LEDs the answer to all lighting requirements?
A: I think the answer has to be a definite ‘no’ for now. It took a long time to create LED which gave out warm white light. Reds, greens and blues were followed by a cold blueish white light but as long as the manufacturing source is good quality, acceptable warm white colours are now available. Good quality manufacturing also means a consistency of colour temperature because with some cheap sources of supply almost every lamp gives out a slightly different colour shade. LED light is linear and has therefore been perfect for display and navigational lighting as well as back lighting and task lights. Making LED light shine through 360° (to replicate the light patterns of the old incandescent lamps) has been more of a challenge. Manufacturers continue to invent new ways to try and make that happen but so far there will always be one blank spot in the 360° circle. LEDs only reach their claimed lamp life if they have an extremely good heat sink and good ventilation inside any luminaire. Without that, the claimed 25,000 hour, 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lamp life can drop to under 10,000 hours. However, they are the future and will continue to develop with long lamp life, good colour and dimming capabilities. Be careful with dimming however, as it is essential that the LED lamps are compatible with the proposed dimming gear. Watch out for first cost too! LED lamps are still pretty expensive and need to be in use an awful lot to become cost effective against CFL equivalent options.

Q? Does Far Eastern manufacturing have a perceived quality issue?
A: Yes, I think unfortunately in some quarters it still does. Personally speaking I think nothing could be further from the truth – remember the Chinese were making exquisite porcelain vases when in Britain we could hardly put a mud hut together. It is just like any other manufacturing in any other country where there are extremes of low quality and high quality, good work places and bad work places, high standards and low standards. The fact that the Chinese have just put a rocket on the moon perhaps shows their high standards of technical and quality achievements today. In some cases and in my industry, their quality of engineering and finish is better than I have come across anywhere in the world. Obviously all that has to be driven by good QC (we have our own factory inspectors controlling that) and more importantly it has to start with good design which good Chinese factories really appreciate and can’t wait to receive. The world’s a small place today and many geographical areas have different fields of manufacturing expertise. The important thing is that as a UK based product designer, I know where to have something manufactured with a perfect blend of price and quality. I am in no way knocking UK manufacturing and we are extremely proud of our ‘made in Blackpool’ statement, because our in house and local skills allow us to create the most spectacular one off custom pieces for the hospitality sectors.

Review of 2013 and outlook for 2014: Stable and sustainable business

Daniel Fountain

Taken as a whole, business for fibre manufacturer Trevira was pleasing and stable in the year just passed. Steps taken to reorganise production structures and tighten up operations are taking effect, which can be seen in the fact that targets set for 2013 were in substance achieved. Not only had the company invested in consolidating in 2013, it launched growth projects at both production sites, especially in fibres. Performance for 2013 will be above the line both in turnover and in results, the outcome on the one hand of changes in the product mix, and on the other of good performance in volumes. In the industrial applications field the position of Trevira is maintained by successful development work. It is also anticipated that products for technical uses and non-woven applications will continue to grow in importance for the future. In 2013 Trevira showed its colours in this important market at three trade fairs: Alongside the now traditional input at Techtextil Frankfurt, Trevira made a first appearance at Techtextil North America in Anaheim (California) and was also represented at Textile Solutions under the umbrella of the Hannover Messe. For non-wovens Index in Geneva is once again on the cards for 2014, while the company will be participating with filament products at the Composites JEC Europe trade fair in Paris.

For the New Year Trevira anticipates that the European market will recover and stabilise and that qualified export business will see further development. Throughout 2014 the process of internationalisation and the success of steps taken in recent years will underpin business in both fibres and filaments.
In future a key factor in Trevira business development will be further Internationalisation, especially into Asia, North and South America and the Near East. The emphasis will also be on new end uses, in industrial or technical applications, for example.

In 2014 the close cooperation with Indorama Ventures and Sinterama, the dedicated owners, will be entering its third year and is proceeding positively and smoothly. Trevira continues to be a sizeable and stable player in the polyester fibre market and is confident that goals set in 2014 will once again be achieved.

Laufen makes UK TV appearance as part of luxurious restoration project

Daniel Fountain

Leading sanitaryware manufacturer Laufen has a starring role in the latest series of UK’s The Restoration Man on Channel 4, with its products chosen for each of the four bathrooms in a former church in Devon, owned by the former Director of Architecture and Design of Hilton Worldwide hotel group. Episode 3 of the series, which is currently airing on Channel 4, sees architect George Clarke travelling to the picturesque fishing village of Brixham in Devon, to meet Jackie Robinson and Neil Worrell. Together the couple have restored the Church, which dates back to 1874, converting it into a four-bedroom family home, complete with four en-suite bathrooms and a cloakroom, all of which feature contemporary Laufen sanitaryware.

As the former Director of Architecture and Design – Europe for Hilton Worldwide hotel group, Neil had a natural eye for and a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve in each of the bathrooms and used his knowledge to create a high-end finish throughout.

Neil, who now runs his own design consultancy, Hotel Planning, restored the interior of the previously completely dilapidated building to maximise the internal layout and feeling of space within the old Church chancel area.

The programme follows the story from despair to delight as the couple struggle with the scale of the project and building their first home together to create a beautiful and striking modern interior making the most of the site and the materials and products selected for the build.

He comments: “We chose Laufen sanitaryware due to its outstanding contemporary quality and design, which we knew would complement our historic restoration with its two distinct areas; the master bathroom area with its slightly ‘period’ historic feel, and the remaining three bathrooms which were designed in a white modernistic style. Each bathroom is completely different, with its own unique design, sanitaryware, tiling and features.”

The Fisherman’s Church master bathroom features Laufen’s stunning solid surface freestanding Palomba bathtub, along with a 1.8 metre long Living Square washbasin and shelf. The black and white theme and decorative tiled flooring, lights and mirror complement the modern bathroom fittings.

Each of the remaining bathrooms has its own unique character, with the fittings chosen accordingly. The compact children’s bathroom, for instance, is fitted with Laufen’s space-saving Mimo bath and washbasin and has a ‘union’ jack theme with a Hollywood style mirror.

The two remaining en-suites both feature Laufen’s Palace collection, including a 1.8 metre shower tray and plate glass screen in one and a more compact 90cm square shower tray in the other, both with complementary washbasins and WC’s. All bathrooms are 2.8m high which adds to the feeling of space and luxury.

Laufen was even able to supply a space-saving solution for the downstairs cloakroom, with its compact Pro WC and matching small washbasin helping to maximise on space.

“We love the final effect achieved in the bathrooms which are both practical and elegant,” comments Jackie.

Laufen supplies bathroom solutions for commercial projects around the world. For more details call +44 (0)1530 510007 or visit www.laufen.com.

‘Empathy is the new buzz word for 2014’, Prospects for 2014

Daniel Fountain

On Thursday 16th January over sixty delegates gathered at the University of Westminster for the Tourism Society’s annual ‘Prospects’ event to discuss the opportunities and challenges that tourism businesses will face over the coming year. The evening was streamed live to a large audience at Plymouth University to celebrate the launch of the Tourism Society Westcountry chapter and to a smaller, informal gathering in Leeds. Distinguished travel broadcaster and journalist Alison Rice MTS chaired the event.Looking to the future Tim Sander (BDRC) focused on the demand side of hotel trends rather than supply, stressing the importance for hotels to create a unique and exciting experience for their consumers. This personalised touch would need to stretch beyond the confines of the hotel building and the welcoming concierge and be built into both the brand and website to create longstanding loyalty. The importance of fulfilling the needs of the ever more discriminating consumer was further highlighted by Tony Hall MTS (The Caravan Club) who described the need for cheaper deals with more value, and balancing an increased availability of WIFI with providing an environment in which to ‘unplug’.

Research guru David Edwards FTS (VisitBritain) predicted that the UK share of world visitor numbers would increase with the total reaching 13 million in 2014. The football World Cup in June, the growth of the Chinese market and the fall of the price of oil were all examined as factors that would affect travel trends. Technology continues to evolve leading to a need for instant gratification, demanding bigger and better products and events in order to achieve the same satisfaction. David Bridgford (Merlin Entertainments) discussed how this reflected on the behaviour patterns in youth who do not ‘use’ services but instead treat them as ‘platforms’ to facilitate their desire to have fun. He concluded by commenting on the Over 50s growth market, a demographic group that is currently holding a staggering 80% of the UK’s wealth, and are responsible for 40% of consumer spending, yet just 10% of marketing spend is directed at them.

The evening ended with a series of animated questions being fired across to the panel, including from those watching the live stream in Leeds that explored, amongst other issues, the failure of the UK government to recognise tourism as an export sector. The panel gave their own suggestions for changes including cutting VAT to 5% in accommodation and attractions, cheaper petrol and greater investment in infrastructure.

Tourism Society Executive Director Gregory Yeoman commented:
“Once again our Prospects event has brought together speakers and audience members from across our industry, and now from widely across the country. The panellists were all optimistic about business prospects for 2014 and the discussions in London, Plymouth and Leeds gave plenty of ideas about what people should be concentrating on for their own businesses to succeed.”

Laufen focuses on innovation with SaphirKeramik

Daniel Fountain

Architects and designers will have the opportunity to learn more about SaphirKeramik, Laufen’s revolutionary lightweight material for the formation of bathroom ceramics that are pencil thin, at the 2nd edition of Architect@Work.Taking place on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 January at London’s Earls Court 2, Architect@Work is specially tailored for architects, interior designers and other consultants, with a focus on innovation.

The unique concept of the event sees a range of innovative products, including Laufen’s SaphirKeramik washbasins, which have been specially selected by a panel of judges, on display in the exhibition area.

SaphirKeramik brings innovations in terms of the physical properties that can be created with ceramic, opening up a whole new level of creativity for the bathroom designer. Able to withstand scratches and the impact of chemical agents such as detergents and lime scale, SaphirKeramik also achieves an extremely narrow radius on the curvature of corners – up to 1-2 millimetres – resulting in washbasins that are super-thin and extremely lightweight.

Visitors to Architect@Work can see the results of this unique new material for themselves, with a range of washbasins made from SaphirKeramik forming an important part of the exhibition space. With the event also giving exhibitors and visitors the opportunity to make direct contact, Laufen’s Manager of Global Projects Ilker Hussein and Specification Executive David Bromell will be present throughout the two days to discuss the design possibilities offered by the Laufen brand and its products.

About Fine Cell Work
Fine Cell Work is a social enterprise that trains prisoners in paid, skilled, creative needlework – undertaken in the long hours spent in their cells – to foster hope, discipline and self esteem. Stitchers spend an average of 20 hours per week doing embroidery in their cells: the highest earners stitch for as long as 40 hours. It’s a way of life that enables them to serve their time with dignity and purpose and the earnings give them hope, skills and independence. This helps them to connect to society and to leave prison with the confidence and financial means to stop offending. Fine Cell Work is done in 29 prisons with 300 prisoners and 97% of the stitchers are men. All of the classes have waiting lists. Fine Cell Work is a charitable initiative which is funded 40% by sales and 60% by donations and trusts. Prisoners earn 37% of the proceeds from the sale of their work and the remainder is reinvested in training workshops, materials and Fine Cell Work’s development.

The prisoners’ products have been sold to internationally and to top interior designers such as William Yeoward and Nina Campbell. Works have been commissioned by leading heritage organisations such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Trust and English Heritage.

Star of the circle revived by Lano Flooring Solutions

Daniel Fountain

With the flexibility offered by the bespoke Walk of Fame portfolio, Lano Flooring Solutions has provided Bluewater with two highly accurate replacement carpets that feature an unusual circular chlidema design, in a high quality axminster blend for premium performance. As Europe’s largest shopping centre designed to deliver an exclusive shopping and dining experience, Bluewater in Kent receives high footfall every day from visitors looking for the latest fashion releases and designer labels. One of the main café bars enjoys a location in one of the busiest walkways of the centre, with flooring comprised of a combination of hard ceramic tiles and soft circular carpet. Over time, the existing carpet required replacement after heavy usage.

As the design elements of the café bar had been specifically created to match the strong star and constellation theme of the stylish hall in which it is located, identical replicas were required to replace the worn carpet. In addition to a five-pointed star element, the carpets also feature a rare chlidema design consisting of a border of equidistant circles. Having worked with Lano Carpets previously in the commercial sector, local flooring contractor John Wareing from JMI Flooring Ltd recommended Lano Flooring Solutions as a company that could deliver an accurate solution to this fairly specialised problem. He comments, “Having fitted carpets from Lano before in offices, I was impressed with both the high quality and appearance and so put the name forward as a reliable carpet supplier.”

By supplying the design team at Lano Flooring Solutions with images and measurements of the original carpet, a replica design was mocked up using the latest graphic software and pinpoint colour referencing to create an identical copy. The bespoke 10-row axminster carpets, including the chlidema border, were then woven in a densely piled, premium quality blend of 80% wool and 20% nylon. The final result was beautiful, hardwearing carpet suitable for commercial heavy use to provide neat appearance retention and stand up to the high traffic area of the Bluewater café bar.

To enable successful installation on site, the carpets were supplied in two halves on four metre rolls and fitted together on site by John Wareing. He comments; “When the carpets arrived, they were absolutely identical replicas of the original carpets. It was incredible. The installation went smoothly and the carpet parts were joined together seamlessly on site. The final result fulfilled the brief and delivered precisely what the client needed, which was exactly the same design as before. The quality, fresh new carpets have renewed the smart look of the café bar.”

Laufen brings a new concept to hotel bars

Daniel Fountain

While the exhibition stands were busy throughout the two days of the recent Sleep event, the Sleep Concept Hotel Bar was the centre of attention thanks to its unique design, with the structure formed out of Laufen ceramic washbasins and shelves. The company’s slim profile Living Square basins were chosen for the project by Nous Design, an interior design practise based in London, which specialises in high end hospitality and residential design services.

Described by Nous Design’s Creative Director Nir Gilad as a ‘flowing structure in a continuous form which expressed the confluence of new hotel design ideas and services that is synonymous with Sleep’, the bar was at the heart of the action throughout the two-day event.

Nir explains: “The Sleep Bar idea started from a proposal to a few of our Laufen friends over a drink – to turn the Laufen washbasins and baths into ice tray bars with champagne flowing taps. This simple idea was turned into an exciting adventure for the creation of the first ceramic bar.

“The structure identified the bar as a place to gather and draw people in,” he continues. “On one side it jetted towards the conference theatre and on the other it acted as the portal to the Sleep Hotel, achieving a strong connection between the two spaces, while creating a pavilion and a social platform for the entire event.

“We used Laufen’s advanced technology and knowledge in new age ceramics in order to create a fantastic unseen design. The ceramic is a unique material in its ability to project a pure and majestic character. This enabled us to create a light, linear and hovering shape which is indifferent to its surroundings.

“The Laufen professional team has proven to be fantastic partners in taking a complex technical matter and turning it into a beautiful experience of aesthetics.”

The structure comprised around 1.5 tonnes of ceramic, formed from eight Living Square washbasins, plus 48 ceramic shelves. Putting all this together to form the finished bar was no mean feat, with the product being fixed on a metal structure, pre-installed in the model shop in Austria and divided into six elements for transportation to London.

Ilker Hussein, Laufen’s Manager for Global Projects, said: “It was a great pleasure and learning experience to work with Nir and the UBM team in delivering the most imaginative bar concept we have had at the Sleep Event. The brain-child of Russell Barnes, Laufen Director of Export & Global Project Sales, and Nir Gilad of Nous Design, the journey to realise this amazing feat was a true example of teamwork.

“The vision of Nir’s design combined with the technical capability of the Laufen team to construct the frame structure to hold six 1.3 metre washbasins and 48 shelf units, together with managing the logistics from Austria to Islington for the set-up, is an experience I will not forget.

“The team at UBM worked hard to ensure we were able to deliver the bar safely to its place within the bar area, helping us coordinate our efforts with the construction partners, Wilmott Dixon and the other bar area sponsors. All the efforts and sleepless nights were worth it once the Sleep Event opened its doors – the reaction of the visitors to the event was truly unbelievable.”

Roman’s first 10mm thick Bath Screen

Daniel Fountain

Leading UK manufacturer, Roman, presents its first 10mm thick glass Bath Screen, which has been styled to perfection to allow you to create a style statement even when showering over the bath. This contemporary 10mm thick Bath Screen is part of Roman’s newly launched range, Decem. The brand new Bath Screen is proving to be a popular product in the Decem range, which was officially launched at the Sleep Event this year. Latin for 10, the Decem 10mm thick glass range is the ultimate in showering design. Roman have combined everything they have learnt about showering over the last 28 years to create this unparalleled range, which for the first time presents a series of curved or square hardware design options.

Bath Screens remain a popular sought after product and Roman’s 10mm thick Bath Screen is an exciting addition to the collection. 65% of people in the UK still shower over the bath, due to the small bathroom size in the UK and, as many people are reluctant to fully remove their baths, they are adding shower facilities to go over their baths.

The Decem Hinged Bath Screen has been meticulously designed for a superior finish with chrome on brass components and the choice of curved or straight hinges so you can create your own design effect. This Bath Screen is power shower approved, so you can still enjoy an indulgent and powerful showering experience whilst over the bath.

The Bath Screen opens outwards, which allows easy access for cleaning, whilst the self-closing hinges offer a super smooth action. The integrated ‘bath-top’ Water Safe System presents excellent water integrity. The Hinged Bath Screen is then completed with Ultra Care pre-coated glass protection and carries a service backed Truelife Lifetime Guarantee for total peace of mind.

Managing Director, David Osborne, comments, “We are very proud to launch our first 10mm thick Bath Screen as part of our stunning new Decem range. Many of our retail partners have been quick to add the bath screen to their range of displays, as it offers a luxurious and impressive finish, which works so well in the UK bathroom and there are very few 10mm thick over the bath options available. It is also proving to be a popular choice for our Architects and Designers who have taken an interest in it for Hotel specification, due to the practical easy clean nature of the product.”

Daniel Fountain

Located in the Arabian wildlife park of Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, this one-of-a-kind resort overlooks a beautiful natural landscape with rare views of magnificent wildlife. BAGNODESIGN products were used throughout each of the bathrooms at the resort, adding a uniquely different element. Pivotal role for Laufen’s customisable solid surface material in futuristic bathroom design

Daniel Fountain

As a manufacturer of innovative solutions that shape the future of bathroom design, Laufen was chosen by Purpose Design for inclusion in the Sleep Concept Hotel at the recent Sleep London event. The Sleep Concept Hotel forms a key part of the overall exhibition and invites designers to plan and build a life sized hotel room following a specific brief. This year’s brief was inspired by the nostalgia for the 1960s: transforming the show’s catwalk of hotel design into a radical contemporary Pop Art experience.

The Concept Hotel featured five rooms, or hotel areas, in total, each of them very different but all sharing a common goal: to inspire the future of hotel design and provoke discussion.

Laufen’s solid surface material, which can be used by designers to create bespoke basins, bathtubs and furniture, was incorporated into the Concept Hotel bathroom, designed by Purpose Design.

Purpose Design’s overall vision for the Sleep Concept Hotel was to showcase 3D printing and its context within hotel room design, development and procurement. Using 3D printing to fulfil the brief, Purpose Design sought to harness what pop art did for art and design in the 60s. This was achieved using a variety of 3D printed elements and objects, such as lighting.

The washbasin, manufactured by Laufen using its innovative materials and techniques, is a real statement piece, demonstrating the capabilities of the Laufen factory, this combined with a shower tray imprinted with the word ‘splash‘further illustrated the manufacturing capabilities of Laufen.

Gail Thomson, Director of Purpose Design, comments: “As part of the room set, I wanted to illustrate how a 3D printed bathroom pod may look in the future, when large scale printing technology is available. It was this concept that formed the backbone of the en-suite design. To accomplish this effect, I wanted to explore the use of a solid surface material and how it could be adapted to form any shape. Having worked with Laufen on some of our international projects, and having seen what they achieved for us previously using solid surface manufacturing, they seemed the obvious collaboration.”

The end result was a very usable and beautiful environment, in which to showcase the latest innovations in material and design from Laufen. Ilker Hussein, Manager Global Projects at Laufen, comments: “We were delighted to work with Purpose Design on their project for the Sleep Concept Hotel and were very pleased with the finished result.

“Our initial discussion with Gail was to supply a simple washbasin and WC pan, but then Gail outlined her idea of a 3D printing concept, which inspired us to give it a go! Within 2 months a simple sketch became the bathroom you see now. The scheme developed from a very organic design to a more linear creation. Our customisation team worked very closely, in great detail, to work with Gail’s creativity, pushing the boundaries of what we had ever done before. We are extremely proud to be associated with Gail and the process of realising her creativity.”

Roman on the Move

Daniel Fountain

Leading UK Shower Manufacturer, Roman, has launched a mobile version of their website (www.roman-showers.com), to respond to the growing number of people visiting the site on a mobile device. This new mobile friendly version provides the user with the ultimate convenience as the website can be viewed on the move. Roman is the first UK Shower Enclosure Manufacturer to launch a site which has been designed specifically to be compatible with a mobile device.

On entering the Roman mobile website, the user is presented with the most common areas people are most likely to access from their mobile phone, such as: Product Search, Showroom Locator, Brochure Request and Guarantee Registration. All of these key sections of the website are easily and quickly accessible at a click of a button.

Following some extensive research, which showed that around a third of the visitors to the Roman website were from a mobile device, it was the perfect time to create the website optimised for small screen devices such as mobile phones. Over 13% of visitors enjoy the Roman website from handheld mobile devices (purely mobile phones) and a massive 40% of visitors come from tablets and mobile devices.

According to a study, 50% of the average global mobile web users now use mobiles as either their primary or exclusive means of going online. 41% of people have used a mobile device to browse for a product after seeing it in a show or advertisement.

Using this research and their own analytical data, Roman optimised their website to cater for the popular use of mobile devices. It is designed to deliver the mobile version of the site when visiting from a smartphone, but for bigger devices, such as tablets, users will still enjoy the full desktop version of the site.

The manufacturers’ goal is to provide the user with the ultimate convenience, as the website can be viewed on the move. Form meets function for Roca’s double award-winning In-Tank Meridian WC

Daniel Fountain

Roca’s revolutionary, space-saving WC, the In-Tank Meridian, has been recognised for its innovation by scooping two prestigious design awards in as many weeks. The WC, the first to have a concealed cistern integrated into the pan, impressed judges at the 2013 Society of British and International Design (SBID) Awards, winning the best product in the contract sector.

This compact solution for domestic and commercial bathrooms was also recognised at the recent Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Magazine Awards, where it saw off tough competition to win Gold in the Innovation in Functionality category.

The In-Tank Meridian WC features Softair technology – an air injection system in the cistern which optimises water flow. The flush buttons on the side of the WC activate an air pump that emits a flow of air. This pushes water up from the internal cistern to fill the rim of the pan, while the downward flow clears the bowl. The cistern is then replenished to its optimum level and ready for use.

Fully approved by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS), the dual flush uses 4.5 or 3 litres of water, giving a very economical 3.4 litre average flush. The In-Tank is also fitted with a reserve power supply, enabling it to be used for up to six full flushes or 10 part flushes in the event of a power cut.

Remarking on the awards, Alan Dodds, Roca UK Managing Director, commented: “Roca are proud that the In Tank Meridian WC has won these very worthy awards. The In Tank Meridian represents the philosophy that underlies the Roca brand, as it is designed to enhance the bathroom experience and make everyday life more comfortable for everyone, both now and in the future.”

Dernier & Hamlyn enlightens new Canary Wharf dining experience

Daniel Fountain

A new modern European restaurant and cocktail bar recently opened in the iconic 50 storey One Canada Square building in the heart of Canary Wharf. The venue, which is also called One Canada Square, is operated by ETM Group. It features interiors by renowned designers David Collins Studio and lighting produced by Dernier & Hamlyn.David Collins’ design concept was to take the existing fabric of the building and combine its bold use of austere marble for the post-industrial designs of the early 1990’s, with a softer dining aesthetic complemented by classic brassiere details. For the lighting this resulted in Dernier & Hamlyn manufacturing magnificent polished chrome chandeliers with weighty circular glass panels underneath. Each fitting is over 2m in circumference and has 15 LED lamps.

Tom Martin, co-founder of ETM Group says: “This venue is fast becoming the eating and drinking epicentre of Canary Wharf and the ambience created by the interior design and lighting is a fundamental part of its popularity.”

Dernier & Hamlyn joint managing director Jeremy Quantrill says: “The light fittings for One Canada Square are stunning and push the definition of chandelier to the limits. We love working on projects that bring new challenges and the brief from David Collins Studio certainly did exactly that.”

Roman Enjoy an Energising Sleep

Daniel Fountain

UK Shower manufacturer and designer, Roman, have once again enjoyed another busy and successful Sleep Event, reporting that, alongside their specialist range of products designed specifically for the Project market, Made in Britain was a key talking point amongst visitors to their stand. The manufacturer reported that; although they have highlighted previously that their range of products have been made in Britain, the focus and interest on this particular aspect has really developed over the last 12 months. This was a real attraction to the Roman stand.

This year was the company’s 7th time exhibiting at the show and it marked the official launch of their Decem range of enclosures, but this was showcased with a unique twist. Keeping the specialist hotel market in mind, Roman showcased bespoke versions of the Decem collection, to highlight the flexibility of the range, as well as the opportunity presented by their dedicated Project Specification Guide.

As a British manufacturer and with an in-house design team, Roman is able to create a shower enclosure to suit your individual specification. Some of the capabilities highlighted on the Roman stand included: Shower Enclosures built over-height, a combined Shower Enclosure and Toilet Cubicle, bespoke dimensions, hardware options and a bespoke Bath Screen with a concealed profile for a frameless finish.

Visitors to this year’s show were particularly interested in the combined Toilet Cubicle and Shower Enclosure. This concept has been particularly popular in the Middle East, but is becoming increasingly popular Worldwide. This particular product combination, also highlighted some key features that are available when creating an enclosure using the Project Specification Guide; such as two-way swing hinges and over height.

Roman has supplied products to the hotel sector for many years, providing products Worldwide. The stand highlighted their specialist experience in this particular sector, and sampled a few of the wide and varied range of options that are available, whether you are looking for something off-the-shelf, or totally designed and built to a specific specification.

David Osborne, Managing Director at Roman, comments: “It was exciting to see just how many people have become interested in products which have been both designed and manufactured in the UK. This was from both UK businesses, as well as those specifying products overseas. This teamed with our capabilities as a manufacturer to supply products totally to brief, ensured the Roman stand attracted a great deal of interest at this year’s exhibition.”

Signbox respond to Skype call for digital glazing graphics

Daniel Fountain

Signbox has successfully completed an extensive signage project for the stylish new London offices of Microsoft subsidiary Skype that now occupy 90,000 sq ft over three refurbished floors of Waterhouse Square, Holborn; the gothic landmark considered one of London’s most distinguished buildings. The innovative layout was designed by tp bennett LLP, the long established leading architectural practice, and delivered by ISG, the internationally renowned fit-out specialists.

Signbox worked in close partnership with RAW Unlimited, the brand and environmental graphic designers, to print over 1,000 sq metres of optically clear Lintec film that provided manifestation across all the glazed partitions and doors. Produced in-house utilising their Durst Omega 2 technology, the digital glazing graphics created privacy screening whilst still maintaining a light and airy feel to the spaces. Importantly the manifestation had to work with Skype’s AV technology, by blending the dot pattern in critical areas for each and every room. Signbox even incorporated the famous emoticons within the design, a quirky twist in keeping with what is essentially a fun building.

Each of the three Skype floors are organised by theme – British bands, products and people – with every room named accordingly. Signbox laser cut acrylic signage and produced a range of bespoke wayfinding icons, designed specifically by RAW, to assist with the multi-lingual Skype team.

Matthew Wilkins, director of Signbox, commented: “This was an exciting project, working in partnership with RAW, Skype, tp bennett and ISG to deliver a technically demanding project within a limited time frame – a challenge we delighted in. The manifestation not only complements an outstanding office space but performs an important technical function too.”

Wallcoverings shine through with Prism Clear Acrylic plates

Daniel Fountain

The Prism ranges from Focus SB have been designed to almost disappear into the room once fitted. They have proven very popular with designers and architects who want electrical accessories to blend into their interiors. The contemporary looking Prism ranges have been used, albeit slightly surprisingly, in period and grand interiors. They seem to bring a subtle touch of modernity to these interiors without compromising the period feel, and this appears to be growing in popularity in refurbishment.

This, alongside a Toggle switch finished in antique bronze or brass complete the look. But the Prism range is also at home in contemporary interiors using switches, toggle or rocker, in hi tech finishes such as brushed stainless steel.

Focus SB uniquely offer two ranges of clear switches Prism and Prism II. Prism is a thinner flat plate and offers contractors the convenience of grid fixing, and comes complete with template for accurate finishing.

Prism II is a screwless version and offers a more discreet look than a semi raised profile.

Dernier & Hamlyn expertise at London’s newest luxury hotel

Daniel Fountain

Working to a Martin Brudnizki brief, Dernier & Hamlyn produced the lighting for the signature bar at the newly opened luxury hotel – Rosewood London. Designed to be one of the most exciting places to drink and dine in London, the hotel’s interiors draw on classic British design and culture so Dernier & Hamlyn, which has been manufacturing bespoke lighting in London since 1888, was the natural choice, for this stylish project.

myhotel Brighton – planned development work

Daniel Fountain

Client brief:
With the arrival of new hotel operators into the local market, myhotel is ambitious to remain at the forefront of hospitality service in Brighton & Hove. As part of the hotel’s ongoing strategic business review certain aspects of the hotel building and its infrastructure have been targeted for updating and improvement. The brief required the addition of circa 15 no hotel room keys & the conversion of the basement car-park into a hospitality venue that complimented the F&B offers currently provided within the hotel. Overall it is anticipated that the extension and conversion works will add a possible further 20 jobs across the hotel and its associated retail partners: myhotel, Merkaba, Chilli Pickle, Small Batch Coffee and a new restaurant operator (TBC).Challenges & Inspiration:
The hotel was constructed in 2006 as part of the hugely successful North Laine Jubilee Street development alongside the award winning Jubilee Library. As a relatively new building the council’s planning department were resistant to the argument that the proposed extensions were necessary. The case was made that certain aspects of the building were left unresolved and the proposals sought to tidy these up at the same time as creating additional volume that the hotel was seeking. The new vista of the hotel from New Road will dramatically improve the aspect of this important cross roads by the Dome Theatre. The conversion of the basement car-park provides the hotel with an exciting opportunity to create a new new large restaurant or music venue, the eventual operator has yet to be confirmed, with the North Laine being the rising star of the Brighton retail scene there are no shortage of national and local operators chomping at the bit to take it on.

Bloomsbury mirror collection – a reflection of elegance and style

Daniel Fountain

Reflecting an era of elegance and style in the classically styled bathroom, the newly launched Bloomsbury collection from BAGNODESIGN includes a beautiful range of antique-style mirrors. Offering the perfect finishing touch to the sanitaryware, furniture and brassware in the Bloomsbury collection, the mirrors are timelessly decadent and designed to make a striking impression in the hotel bathroom. Emulating the air of elegant London living from the turn of the Century, through the roaring 20s and the classic era of the 1950s, each of the mirrors in the collection are named after a different area of the Capital and work equally as well in more public areas of the hotel.

The Bloomsbury collection includes nine wall-mounted and one floor-standing mirror, each with its own distinctive styling. From the striking gold finish of Portobello, Sloane and Strand, through to the brushed nickel or chrome finish of Ellington, there is a mirror to suit any situation.

Design Strategy and a Return on Investment

Daniel Fountain

A Design Strategy is concerned with how the interior design of an Hotel can meet the hoteliers’ objectives of marketing, business, branding and organisation. The ways in which it can do this are many, and range from the clever use of space planning that may require less staff on duty through the careful use of colour to re-enforce branding to developing an easily recognisable scheme that promotes customer loyalty, as with the Park Inn brand. It seems to the writers that the ROI on design could be as much as 30% a year from bedroom refurbishment alone, as our ROI calculator shows. It is obvious that the ROI on all aspects of the operation are looked at and the necessity of refurbishment and keeping a property looking good can often conceal the fact that this also generates a good ROI. That this is a necessity is unquestioned as this recent statement from Barclays Corporate illustrates. Meanwhile design groups promote to hoteliers the contribution of design to profitability and the necessity of it is relayed from hoteliers to shareholders. Is this done by faith, hope, experience or is it just habit?

The high level of finance and procurement organised for many projects would certainly indicate that both the investors and the design consultants involved in the project must have a keen belief in the financial return gained from the project. In projects run in the 1980’s by the Forte project office, designers would find attached to their brief a formula for them to work out the percentage return from an increased room rate earned through the refurbishment.

This was a salutary reminder to the designer of the need to stay within budget as well as a clear indicator that the Forte family were well aware of the need to calculate an ROI on design costs. Interestingly the Forte family are currently developing hotels at the higher end of the market, promoting the Rocco Forte chain as the most luxurious chain in Europe. Obviously there is no doubt here of the ROI from a high design product.

Generally, however, there seems to be an absence of facts, and the subject appears rather woolly. There is often only the simplest acknowledgement toward it in design terms. There are many articles and reports on ROI that report and track the overall profit of a brand or property, but how much of this is able to be pinpointed as coming from design and not, say, from a media advertising campaign, or the introduction of new technology to meeting rooms?

Whilst hotels do leave out comments cards, one wonders how much guests actually use these. Are they used to make complaints that guests don’t feel able to level face to face in reception? Are they left in cardboard boxes in the general office without analysis? Very few hoteliers survey customers about specifics concerning the design of the hotel, so is the only feedback related to the design of the hotel gleaned from Tripadvisor reviews or trade magazines like HotelDesigns?

Breathing new life into an historical building with Roca

Daniel Fountain

Bringing a Grade II* listed building into public use for the first time in more than 200 years, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery in central London is now open to the public, with Roca bathroom solutions being a feature of its washrooms.Giving new life to The Magazine, a former gunpowder store built in 1805, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery is situated just five minutes’ walk from the Serpentine Gallery. Featuring 900 square metres of gallery space, shop, restaurant and social space, the Serpentine’s second space in Kensington Gardens is designed by the multi award-winning Zaha Hadid Architects.

Restored to an extremely high standard in partnership with The Royal Parks, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery continues the relationship between the Gallery and Zaha Hadid Architects,
which began with the inaugural Serpentine Gallery Pavilion Commission in 2000.

This is also not the first time that the Roca Group has been involved with a Zaha Hadid project, with its Chelsea Design Quarter-based, and much-acclaimed, Roca London Gallery also bearing her design. For the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, Roca products were donated as part of the manufacturer’s long-held commitment to supporting cultural and community projects.

Roca’s Meridian-N sanitaryware was chosen to fulfill this most demanding of briefs. Inspired by functionality and geometry, Meridian-N is a fusion of classic and modern design cues, in much the same way as the Serpentine Sackler Gallery itself, being a contemporary renovation and extension of a building that is steeped in British history. The new washrooms feature Meridian-N back-to-wall WCs with soft-close seats, along with co-ordinating compact washbasins.

Overcoming issues of space with its compact design, Roca’s Meridian-N also responds to the demands of modern-day living. The range’s WC cisterns feature an efficient 4.5/3-litre water capacity, helping the Gallery minimise its negative impact on the environment and reduce its running costs.

Roman Shortlisted For Two Awards

Daniel Fountain

UK shower manufacturer and designer, Roman Limited, have been shortlisted for two prestigious products awards over the last few weeks, with the winners of both to be announced later this month. The manufacturer’s newly launched Decem Collection of luxury 10mm thick glass Shower Enclosures has been shortlisted as Product of the Year at the Northern Design Awards, which take place in Manchester on the 22nd November.

Also shortlisted for Plumbing Product of the year, at the Build It awards, is their Roman Shield Complete Tanking Kit, which offers a quick and easy way to install a water-tight wetroom. The Kit has been shortlisted alongside two other products and the winner will be revealed on the 21st November.

Roman’s Complete Tanking Kit is no strange to awards and has previously been the recipient of two other product awards, including the Homebuilding and Renovating Bathroom Product of the Year and the Kitchen’s, Bedrooms and Bathrooms Reader’s Choice Award for Best Bathroom Product.

The Decem Collection, which is manufactured at Roman’s UK headquarters in County Durham, was launched in August this year and so far the feedback from Roman’s customers has been fantastic, with displays quickly being established UK-wide. The bespoke-ability of the range has also stimulated much interest from the contract market, with products being created over-height up to 2700mm now being a possibility.

The Decem Range incorporates a selection of Hinged Door Enclosures, Wetroom Panels and a power shower approved designer Bath Screen. Uniquely the range offers a series of design options, allowing end users to pick between curved or square hardware, there is optional bracing supplied as standard and the Wetroom Panels offer a choice of concealed or standard profiles, with an optional return panel.

The Company has also previously won a Northern Design Award for their Sculptures Range of enclosures.

David Osborne, Managing Director at Roman, commented: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for two totally different product awards within such a short-space of time. The Build It Awards highlight products which are practical and easy to use, to make the installer’s life simple; whereas the Northern Design Awards focus on innovative and stunning product design. We are delighted to see that our product range fits into both of these briefs.

“We are particularly excited about the recognition of our new Decem Range for the Northern Design Awards – this is a range we have carefully developed and nurtured; that we have not only designed, but that we have also expertly manufactured right here in the UK. It’s great to see recognition from an awarding body going to a British manufacturer, highlighting home-grown talent. This range is a culmination of everything we have learnt about showering over the last 28 years, so to have been shortlisted for an award in these early stages after launch is fantastic. We’re looking forward to hearing the results later this month.”

Investing in the Future

Daniel Fountain

Morgan, the British designer and manufacturer of original contract furniture, is investing in design, improving production facilities and exploring new media in order to grow the business and take its success story to the next level.Led by Design Director, Katerina Zachariades, the Morgan Design Team has been growing in number and in stature, with four Design Guild Marks to its name in the past four years. The latest appointment of new designer, Ruth Phillips, increases the team to six and serves to both enhance and increase its output. More frequent product launches, more bespoke solutions and designs that are thoroughly resolved as part of the integrated lean manufacturing process at the Hampshire factory are all benefits of this continuous investment. Senior Designer, Alys Bryan, comments, “Expanding the team enables us to work more closely with our customers to truly understand their projects and assist them through the design process. It also enables us to develop bespoke solutions, where needed, in order to meet their brief. It is extremely rewarding for us and means our customers get good service and come back to us with their next project.”

Lean manufacturing is more than a certification; it is a passion at Morgan. A commitment to continuous improvement delivers efficiencies and quality improvements that are of mutual benefit to the company and customer. The latest investment in pursuit of this aim is a new polishing facility in the factory. An improved layout will ensure a smoother process through this stage of production and better air management will reduce dust and drying times. Also important for staff and the local community around the factory, is that the new facility will reduce environmental impact with quieter fans and lower fume emissions.

With the creation of truly original, high quality furniture as the driving passion at Morgan, success depends on a fully integrated design and manufacturing approach.

Controlling every stage of the process within the Hampshire factory enables the required levels of care, design integrity, experience, craftsmanship and an unfaltering dedication to quality that is required to achieve this.

A new movie from Morgan has been created which makes this concept tangible and entertainingly brings it to life. From trees to beautifully crafted pieces of furniture, the film shows the making of a Modena chair, but equally illustrates the attention to detail and uncompromising care that goes into every single original Morgan design.

The range includes washbasin mixers with heights of 115mm and 140mm, and a high version at 190mm for free-standing washbasins. These blend particularly well with cubic countertop washbasins and purist single or double washbasins, while the sleek design of the lever is set off to particular advantage on the bathtub and shower mixers. The range also includes cityplus zero, a rotary control version with an exchangeable cap, available in a choice of Chrome, Matt Chrome, Night Black, Glacier White and Pure Orange, and with the Swiss cross motif. Both the 110mm and 140mm projection height taps are suitable for mounting on countertop washbasins or as solutions for single or double washbasins. Thanks to its height, the 350mm pedestal mixer is a perfect counterpart for freestanding washbasin bowls. As with twinplus, the shower and bathtub mixers offer a high degree of user-friendliness. With the lever positioned on the right of the tap body on the surface-mounted versions, users are given ample freedom of movement. A bidet solution for each of the ranges rounds off the extensive collection.

Combining aesthetic appeal with functionality, cityplus, twinplus and curveplus from Laufen boast many technical benefits too. The washbasin and bidet mixers are equipped with a cartridge for restricting both the volume of water and the temperature. The outlets also feature a ‛coin slot’ flow regulator, which can be effortlessly unscrewed with a coin, cleaned and replaced to prevent lime scale build up.

Each plus mixer is also fitted with Laufen’s Ecototal cartridge, offering a level of resistance on leaving the energy-saving zone. This can be easily clicked past should the maximum temperature and maximum flow of water be required and can reduce water and energy consumption by up to 30 per cent.

Roca presents innovative hotel design solutions at Sleep

Daniel Fountain

Showcasing its range of innovative and design-led bathroom solutions to designers and architects involved in the hotel industry, Roca will make its first appearance at the Sleep event 2013.Responding to the challenges of hotel bathroom design, Roca will present many of its key products at the show, not least among them being its revolutionary new In-Tank Meridian WC. Offering a compact sanitary solution to enable flexibility of design, Roca’s In-Tank Meridian back-to-wall and wall-hung WCs are the first to have an innovative concealed cistern integrated within the pan.

The integrated cistern removes the need for often costly installation systems incorporating a separate concealed cistern, frame and flush plate. The wall-hung option is supplied complete with either a straight or an L-shaped support, enabling it to be fitted to solid or cavity walls.

This means that In-Tank Meridian – already compact with a projection of just 595mm – requires even less space than standard back-to-wall and wall-hung WCs, offering greater flexibility of positioning as well as saving on installation complexity, time and materials.

A further highlight of Roca’s stand at Sleep will be new additions to the prestigious Armani/Roca collection. Enabling the creation of sophisticated, contemporary and highly functional bathroom spaces, the original Armani/Roca collection launched in 2012. The range is split into four bathroom zones, which reflect the way we use the bathroom in modern living: Beauty, Wellness Bath, Wellness Shower and Basic Needs. Materials, textures and some surprising design combinations come together in the extended range to create harmony and sensuality along with comfort and elegance in the hotel bathroom.

Tourism Society welcomes new visa process for Chinese visitors

Daniel Fountain

The Tourism Society welcomes the announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne yesterday morning regarding the simplification of Visa applications for Chinese visitors to the UK. The new application process should go a long way to encouraging a large number of the one million Chinese tourists who currently visit other European destinations while avoiding Britain to now include us on their itineraries. Tourism Society Chairman David Curtis-Brignell commented: “France alone receives in excess of 25% more Chinese visitors than we do. This announcement is a significant step towards increasing the number of visitors to Britain from this important market and although it has been a long-time coming the industry must say a collective \”thank you\” to DCMS, the Home Office and the Chancellor for making it a reality.”

Grant Hearn, Travelodge CEO said: “It is great news for both the UK economy and our tourism industry that the Government has finally taken steps to streamline the visa application process for Chinese tourists.

We can now clearly showcase to the Chinese market that the UK is open for business, and we have a great chance of reaching the $100 billion bilateral trade target by 2015, which was agreed between the UK and Chinese Government last year.

This announcement will also certainly boost the job market, which is much needed to help get the economy back on track.

However to really unleash the true potential of this growing tourist market, the Government needs to extend its policy to all Chinese tourists and not the selected few.

Tourism Society supports Campaign for Tourism

Daniel Fountain

The Tourism Society has recently announced its support for Campaign for Tourism, launched to ensure all major parties recognise the tourism industry for its contribution to the UK economy and include it in their manifestos for the next general election.David Curtis-Brignell, Chairman of the Tourism Society, commented, “It is ridiculous that an industry that employs 10% of the UK workforce and contributes £134bn to the economy should have been omitted from the 2010 manifestos of all the major political parties. This new campaign will bring the importance of tourism to their attention in a direct way, setting out very clearly why it needs to be positively incorporated into their policy plans from 2015 onwards.”

The campaign’s launch coincides with the cabinet reshuffle which saw Hugh Robertson move from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Curtis-Brignell added, “The continuity we enjoyed during the early years of the coalition has well and truly gone as the role of tourism minister changes hands yet again; we appear to be reverting to the situation we had before where the minister changes on an annual basis. It seems that the government has a lot to learn from the Campaign for Tourism message.”

New Space Saving Solution from Bauhaus

Daniel Fountain

Squeezing an extra designer wall-hung WC and furniture into the smallest space just became a lot easier thanks to the Ultra Slim hidden-in-the-wall WC support frame and cistern from Bauhaus. The depth of Ultra Slim is significantly thinner than a normal frame at just 9cms which means it will fit into the narrowest wall cavities, and reduces how far the pan protrudes into the room. The noise of flushing is quieter as the cistern is in the wall and there is the added option of additional pads to deaden sound further. The unit carries WRAS approval and provides dual flushing. Ultra Slim is capable of holding 400kg in weight and is easy to install with all fixings supplied.

Nitenite to undergo refurbishment

Daniel Fountain

The quirky Nitenite ‘pod’ hotel has appointed architectural and interior design agency Tibbatts•Abel to undertake the refurbishment of the city centre hotel who were responsible for the original design when the hotel opened back in 2006.The hotel was one of Europe’s first windowless hotels based on the successful Japanese ‘pod’ model, offering affordable city centre accommodation within a compact space. The rooms were created to emulate the feel of a cabin aboard a luxury yacht, with all 104 bedrooms fully air conditioned and equipped with 42-inch plasma televisions and hi-tech control panels.

Tibbatts won the Nitenite contract following a competitive four way bid process. The first phase of the hotel refurbishment, which will see a complete transformation of the hotel lobby area, is set to be completed by the end of October.

General Manager of the hotel Lee Alibone said: “We have ambitious plans grow the Nitenite brand and are looking to open a chain of Nitenite cityhotels across the UK over the next few years. It is really important that we get the look and feel of this hotel right, as the Birmingham property will be used as a blue print for future projects.”

Director of Tibbatts Abel, Adam Tibbatts, said: “We are really pleased to be working on the Nitenite project once again and to see the hotel is moving forward with the demands of the market place. The new management team at nitenite gave us a very open brief allowing us to autonomously evolve the interior design from its original conception to a new-look and feel that will appeal to today’s customer.

“The first phase of the refurbishment will see a complete transformation of the lobby area moving away from the current polished finish, to a more ‘urban’ and ‘industrial’ look and feel. We are stripping back the fixtures and fittings to expose the underlying features of the building and replacing the original furniture with quirky statement to create a point of difference for the hotel and take the brand forward. The design concept is a combination of what we have seen in other up and coming hotels in popular cities like New York and Tokyo, and more locally Shoreditch, London.

General Manager Lee Alibone added: “The ‘urban’ industrial look and feel… will appeal to an international audience particularly those who are looking for something different and more interesting than your traditional hotel.

“The new design and added features will only further enhance our offering and customer experience when staying at the Nitenite hotel.”
Nitenite Birmingham was one of Europe’s first ‘pod’ hotels with more than 100 windowless rooms. The hotel was put up for sale in August 2011 after its parent company, Nitenite Holdings, entered administration.

The hotel was brought out by Birmingham based property and hotel entrepreneur Harj Mattu, who has existing hotels in the UK and new hotels under development, in March 2013. The buyout has saved over 20 local jobs, with plans to create more roles over the coming months.
