Work with prints & patterns

Elegant florals and bold botanical wallpaper prints can bring a traditional twist to even the most ultra-modern of bathroom suites. This image of the Victoria Suite by Heritage Bathrooms, which featured in Houzz’s Best of 2019, is a beautiful example of how patterned wallpaper can be used with a standard basin, toilet and fitted bath to create a sleek and charming look.

Alternatively, traditional pieces, such as a Victorian style high-rise basin, can be off-set with on-trend geometric patterned tiling. Classic chequer board tiling is also guaranteed to bring a timeless aesthetic to any style of bathroom suite.

LAUFEN collaborates with studio EOOS

800 600 Hamish Kilburn

LAUFEN collaborates with studio EOOS that created the Austrian contribution to the XXII International Exhibition of La Triennale di Milano with an ecological project…

LAUFEN has made a contribution to the initiative of Austria at the XXII International Exhibition of La Triennale di Milano. Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival is the title of the thematic exhibition that explores the bonds between mankind and the natural environment, bonds that over the course of time have been deeply compromised or even destroyed.

Through projects of architecture and design on different scales, the exhibition explores the concept of design reparation as a solution through which to reinterpret the relationship between human beings and the context in which they live. This year for the first time La Triennale assigned the Bee Awards, created to reward the three worthiest international contributions to the XXII Triennale. Austria is the winner of the Black Bee, for its profound interpretation of the theme and the quality of its presentation.

“LAUFEN has made a substantial contribution to the project and to the video CIRCULAR FLOWS: The Toilet Revolution!”

A leader in its sector with over 125 years of experience, LAUFEN worked together with highly acclaimed Vienna-based design studio EOOS to develop an innovative project that promises to become an important breakthrough on the global scene. Thanks to its exceptional expertise in the design and production of bath fixtures, driven by constant research and technological experimentation, LAUFEN has made a substantial contribution to the project and to the video CIRCULAR FLOWS: The Toilet Revolution!. Supported by the Federal Chancellery of Austria and commissioned by MAK, the Museum of Applied Arts of Vienna, it all started with the long-term research of Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, and the grant of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The studies demonstrate that current practices of waste water treatment play a significant role in unbalancing the nitrogen cycle, with major repercussions on the ecosystem and the health of human beings and other living things, consequences that will become more evident over the short term. New hygienic-sanitary solutions represent the future in the construction of intelligent cities with more healthful, sustainable characteristics.

The collaboration between studio EOOS and LAUFEN has led to save!, a revolutionary toilet prototype for the separation of urine, offering an effective solution in the battle against the global problem of excess nitrogen, in line with the principles of systemic design. The separate treatment of urine means reducing – in an intelligent, economical way – the quantity of nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphor) and pollutants released in the waters of the planet.

Up to 80 per cent of the nitrogen found in sewage can be removed from the wastewater stream, which will in turn reduce the resources required to operate treatment plants. Where others have failed in the past, save! represents a design challenge successfully met, raising excellent prospects for the future. In the achievement of these objects, the contribution of LAUFEN to the project has been fundamental, thanks to the deployment of unprecedented know-how. The Swiss company relies on an extremely advanced research and development centre, the only one in the world capable of developing such an innovative idea. At the same time, it boasts a production system capable of making the save! into the toilet of the future, according to the most advanced industry standards.

GROHE unveils universal solution of concealed shower installations

800 577 Hamish Kilburn

GROHE Rapido SmartBox is now compatable with more than 170 different GROHE trim designs…

Since its initial launch in 2017, the GROHE Rapido SmartBox in combination with the SmartControl Concealed trim sets has ensured the easy installation and premium performance of concealed shower systems, helping to support the trend for minimalist interiors in both residential and commercial projects. With its “push, turn, shower” functions, it offers individual and intuitive control combined with a space-saving and slim design.

Now, the Rapido Smartbox can be used as a universal shower solution thanks to its compatibility with more than 170 different GROHE trim designs, offering architects, designers, specifiers and installers freedom of planning and efficient installation when working on projects. Plus, with an installation depth of only 75mm, the GROHE Rapido SmartBox fits into every kind of wall, even particularly narrow ones. Furthermore, its recent successful WRAS accreditation pays testament to its high standards when it comes to compliance with water regulations. The esteemed approval by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme also enables the Rapido Smartbox to be specified by housebuilders for property development.

The Rapido Smartbox now matches perfectly with three different styles of trim set; two-handle thermostats, single-lever mixers and the SmartControl Concealed, all of which are available in an array of colours, finishes, shapes and sizes. All three styles offer varying functionalities, aesthetics and price points, catering for all projects regardless of space, size and budget.

Rapido Smartbox: Efficient, universal installation

The extensive range of trim set designs which allows greater freedom over aesthetic and functionality for customers is made possible by the exciting innovations that lie behind the wall within the Rapido Smartbox. With three outlets, the Rapido Smartbox facilitates a wider range of showering options, for which previously two rough-ins would have been required. This helps to make the complexity of concealed showering more accessible for both installers and customers alike. In addition, the GROHE Rapido SmartBox makes adapters dispensable as it has ½ inch outlets to which all standard tubes can be connected. Designed with easy installation in mind, the Smartbox is equipped with inlets that connect from below, allowing a direct connection to the hot and cold water supply. Therefore the use of 90-degree fittings is eliminated.

This innovative shower mechanism also provides many other benefits for installers including:
• Subsequent adjustment of the trim set by six degrees post-installation to perfectly align with tiles and joints is possible thanks to long holes in the unit.
• Optional service stops for retrofit allow installers to gain complete access over the water supply in just a few steps. During maintenance, each of the Smartcontrol or Smartbox fittings can be closed directly and separately.
• The GROHE Rapido SmartBox can be retrofitted with a safety protection against backflow and meets the EU standard 1717 when installed with an integrated bath-fill and overflow unit.
• Easy on-site installation is made possible thanks to the helpful brass outlets which allow connection to the pipes to be installed with the use of a pipe wrench. This means mounting can be carried out quickly and easily on-site and a bench vice is not necessary.

SmartControl Concealed: Ultra-thin design for additional space in the shower

For bathrooms where space is extremely limited, GROHE offers a particularly “slim” solution: GROHE SmartControl Concealed in combination with the new GROHE Rapido SmartBox. The installation of the behind-the-wall technology combined with the ultra-slim design of the trim which projects just 43 mm from the surface of the wall, creates a minimalist look and gives the feeling of additional space in the shower. SmartControl Concealed is controlled using intuitive push-and-turn technology to individually select the preferred shower spray type and control water volume. Each shower trim, available in a round or square design, can operate up to three functions from head shower to hand shower and bath filler to body jets, for a truly customised shower that meets the demands of each individual bathroom’s needs. In addition, several styles are available: a classic Chrome finish or a discreet, elegant MoonWhite acrylic glass design. The SmartControl shower mixer trim is also available in SuperSteel and Brushed Hard Graphite and as of May 2019, there will be seven other metallic finishes on offer, complete with GROHE’s unique PVD coating which provides long-lasting colour and durability.

Two-handle thermostats: Simple operation delivers precise control

The new two-handle thermostats have been designed to offer convenient temperature and water flow control, using the same iconic visual icons as the SmartControl. They are compact, space-saving and combine precise performance with a slim, minimalist design. GROHE thermostats excel in delivering ease of operation, safety, comfort and above all, a relaxing shower experience. Equipped with leading technology, the GROHE TurboStat thermostat reacts within fractions of a second to pressure and temperature fluctuations. The mixing ratio of cold and hot water is continuously adjusted so that the temperature selected remains constant. Both head shower and hand shower can be controlled by intuitive rotation of the Aquadimmer handle, the upper control on the trim set. Turning the upper control slightly to the left will activate the hand shower, and by simply continuing to turn to the left, the water flow and power of the spray will increase. When the head shower is required, simply switch the control to the right and once again, increase volume by continuing to turn.
The two-handle thermostats are newly available in a slimmer profile, with only 43mm projection from the wall, and are offered in both round and square designs. In addition to the single-function models, models with two functions are now available, with clear pictograms used to indicate head and hand shower or shower and bath filler.

Single-lever mixers: Comfortable and simple operation for unlimited showering pleasure

GROHE single-lever mixers are designed for functionality and offer a stylish, sleek look that will prove popular with consumers. The latest additions to the range now make three-way functionality a reality, where only single and two-way systems were possible before. Users can now choose from three different types of spray pattern using the upper button on the mixer; from a powerful jet spray, to a relaxing rainshower or a practical hand shower. Meanwhile, the lower handle provides comfortable and intuitive temperature and water control. The trim sets, which have been designed to match all GROHE brassware ranges to ensure coordinated design in bathroom projects, are easy to install thanks to GROHE QuickFix, which reduces fitting time by up to 50 per cent.

Morgan makes a colourful splash

800 545 Hamish Kilburn

New commissions from Morgan Furniture showcase appetite for bold and bright colours ahead of SS19…

With the 1970’s vibe in full swing, designers are looking to colours and patterns that arouse and inspire the imagination. Morgan, contract furniture and manufacture, shares two recent commissions that perfectly encapsulate the current taste for vivid, post-Scandinavian palettes.

A family of Chevy dining and meeting chairs brings the seventies into the 21st century with rich gemstone colours. While the collection itself owes its inspiration to the styling and elegance of an earlier era, its timeless silhouette can adapt to any aesthetic sensibility and contract environment. Turned timber legs and a fully wrapped seat detail combine to create a picture of comfort and simplicity.

The Chevy collection brings together five chairs and seven modish coffee tables, available in three heights.

Image caption: Chevy by Morgan Furniture

A pattern reminiscent of the 1980’s Memphis Group’s abstract geometry and Keith Haring’s pop stylings gives these Goodwood lounge chairs punch. Here the collection piece uses upholstery to showcase the graphic motif from fabric designer GP & J Baker.

With customisable arms and an optional high or low back, the Goodwood range invites guests to sit back and relax. The collection has ten chairs and four tables, available in two heights, three top sizes and a choice of glass, timber or marble inset.

Commenting on the two collections, Morgan’s Design Director Katerina Zachariades said: “When we’re developing the concept for a chair design, we look for inspiration in fashion, nature and architecture. This encourages us to use shapes that are enduring, as opposed to transient styling.

“All Morgan furniture is made to order for clients. Upholstery choices help designers’ visions to be brought to life while scale and base options allow for the chair design to be suitable for a variety of uses.”

How Living Coral can energise your hotel

800 580 Hamish Kilburn

Hotel Designs’ recommended supplier Signbox explores how to make the most out of Pantone’s colour of the year, Living Coral…

Since the 1960s, Pantone has been influencing creatives who rely on its standardised colour reproduction system for design and print continuity, consistency and inspiration. Every year it unveils a new Pantone Colour of the Year to reflect a new season of trends and influences that will fire the imagination of product developers and purchasers, designers and retailers; in 2019 that task falls to the incoming Colour of the Year: Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral.

Described by Pantone as ‘sociable and spirited…the fusion of modern life…a lively presence’, Living Coral looks set to make a rapturous impact on the work of the signage industry’s more ingenious manufacturers – and that means energised workspaces, invigorated teams and an altogether happier working environment.

This isn’t just marketing parlance; according to Pantone, there’s a psychological connection to be had with Living Coral and it could just be the game changer that business owners are looking for if the wellbeing and productivity of their workforces need a lift.

The Pantone Colour Institute is the unit that forecasts global colour trends and advises companies on product and brand visual identity colour palettes to leverage the power of colour – so it knows a thing or two about emotional responses to colour.

“Living Coral’s flamboyant, lively and effervescent shade will mesmerise the mind and create an aura of confidence, energy and positivity.”

“Vibrant, yet mellow Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment’, explains Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute. “In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages light-hearted activity. Symbolising our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.”

Translate that to a workplace or hotel environment and Living Coral’s flamboyant, lively and effervescent shade will mesmerise the mind and create an aura of confidence, energy and positivity. Consider the impact of Living Coral’s hue on branding, wayfinding, environmental graphics and glass manifestation, for example, and it’s easy to see how powerful an interior design scheme can be as a motivating force. It’s a colour that encourages communication too, so expect to see leadership spirits fired and employees galvanised.

The power of colour when it comes to branding

Never underestimate the power of colour to create an emotional relationship with a brand and its physical space. With the capacity to affect us physically, intellectually and emotionally, colour is a critical component when it comes to applying a brand identity and an interior workplace scheme that reflects it.

Take digital wallpaper. It can be a big, bold and exciting step that can transform your office vista. But, don’t just choose a show-stopping image to project across your walls and place your order; consider first how your colour palette will influence your team, your partners and clients – the decisions they make and activities they undertake can have a serious effect on your business. Set them up for success with a colour that suits your environment, your market sector and the mood you want to induce.

A perfect colour for hotel and leisure environments

Take Living Coral. It’s comprised of red, yellow and orange – colours that can increase workplace productivity and inspire workforce wellbeing. What’s not to love?

  • Red is a physical colour that represents courage, strength and excitement – a great colour to use in work areas that demand physical exertion.
  • Yellow is an emotional colour that represents creativity, friendliness, optimism and confidence. Incorporate it when you want to stimulate positivity, creativity and happiness.
  • Orange blends the physicality of red with the emotion of yellow to create a sense of comfort and nurturing.

So, when you’ve assessed the impact that colours like Living Coral can have on the human body and its emotional relationships with space, you can apply it to the most appropriate areas. Living Coral can inspire transformative change in areas where creativity or physical activity needs an added stimulus – think design studios and gyms, for example. Since it also stimulates socialisation, it could work wonders in hotel and leisure environments – places where you want your clients to linger for longer and spend more perhaps.

ISH Preview: Laufen to exhibit collaboration with Patricia Urquiola

797 534 Hamish Kilburn

At the upcoming edition of ISH, Laufen will present SaphirKeramik in all its forms with the return of Sonar, the refined collection designed for the Swiss company by Patricia Urquiola…

Laufen is enthusiastically preparing to participate at the upcoming iteration of ISH, the indispensable biennial event in the field of bath furnishings.

Always on the front lines of research and experimentation, Hotel Designs Recommended Supplier Laufen brings its finest innovation to Frankfurt: SaphirKeramik. High-tech and ecological, this ceramic material patented by the company has launched a new trend in the world of bathroom design, which has continued with growing success since 2013, in applications for both the residential and contract sectors.

The technical characteristics of SaphirKeramik are enviable, and never cease to amaze due to the infinite range of potentialities yet to be fully explored. Qualities like extreme strength, lightness and slimness have stimulated great designers to work with SaphirKeramik, in collaboration with Laufen, in an unprecedented exploration of form with a spirit of boundless creativity. Alongside the other collections, visitors will rediscover the allure and elegance of Sonar, designed for Laufen by Patricia Urquiola.

Winner of the iF Design Award 2018 in the Product category, Sonar has proven its capacity to bring out the exceptional qualities of SaphirKeramik. Based on a creative process full of stimulating ideas, the pieces in the collection embody a sculptural aesthetic through symmetrical volumes, minimal lines and a sophisticated balance of angles and curves. The thin, bright and lightweight surfaces of Sonar give rise to an innovative, sophisticated design that perfectly combines beauty and functional quality. Another feature also enhances the refined forms of the collection: the very fine three-dimensional texture created by Patricia Urquiola to add a decorative sign to the ceramic material. Inspired by sound waves that spread in water, the motif on the external walls of the basins runs vertically, also producing a pleasing tactile sensation.

The Sonar collection is composed of freestanding or wall-mounted, single or double washbasins in SaphirKeramik, a bathtub in Sentec, and a series of wooden cabinets. Technology is a constant presence in Laufen’s products, and once again in this case Swiss quality translates into painstaking attention to detail. Thanks to intensive design research, the flow of water is optimised and perfectly channelled, facilitating operations of cleaning and maintenance, in solutions that guarantee maximum functional performance and sustainability.

Make hotels more instagrammable with UNILIN

800 567 Hamish Kilburn

A recent British survey suggests that more than 40 per cent of millennials choose their holiday destination based on its Instragammability, so what can you do to make hotel interiors more instagrammable? UNILIN explains…

To find out, UNILIN, division panels, makers of Evola decorative panels have turned to Kel Wouters of So Buzzy, a social media marketing agency that counts Crowne Plaza Antwerp and Hotel BLOOM, among its clients.

“Instagram can give your hotel additional awareness and reach, and often just a small investment can have a major impact,” begins Wouters. “Hotels that are shared frequently are ‘top of mind’ and people will want to stay there and populate their own feed from the same place. It’s a positive circle for any hotel that can crack Instagram.”

Starting small can often reap surprising rewards. A simple yet amusing slogan on the wall of the entrance to washrooms at The Hotel’s (Brussels) restaurant reading ‘men to the left because women are always right’, became one of its most Instagrammed spots. Designers can use UNILIN Evola panels to such effect, choosing from 168 designs as the perfect backdrop to a ‘grammable’ slogan, or even creating a unique ‘selfie spot’ with custom digital print technology available on UNILIN’s HPL, melamine and edging tape.

Wouters continues: “Check what your audience is sharing and looking at on Instagram and respond to that when designing your spot. Think about light in the area and test it out beforehand. Ensure there’s an obvious link to your hotel. If guests are sharing your selfie spot but no one knows that it’s in your hotel, then it’s a wasted opportunity; share your account at the location and encourage people to use a hashtag.”

UNILIN can offer office space designers a flexible way to approach the entire fabric of their Instagram spot – walls, partitions, furniture and surface treatment – with different looks that all possess the same low-maintenance, splash-proof, scratch-resistant, fade-resistant and durable finish. perfect for giving any selfie spot a ‘loveable’ look and joining Evola in 106 matching decors, ClicWall is UNILIN’s instantly transformative wall panel system.

“Interior designers also need to look at what’s currently popular on Instagram, although they need to be careful with temporary trends. Replaceable accessories are the key. The ball chairs at Hotel BLOOM! regularly get new cushions in different colours to create a whole new vibe, and arty objects throughout the hotel are replaced at regular intervals,” concludes Wouters.

UNILIN Evola and ClicWall panels can be used as the perfect, lasting backdrop for any hotel looking to make itself more Instragammable.

How hotels can utilise this year’s bathroom trends

800 543 Hamish Kilburn

With the bathroom trends for 2019 well and truly forecasted, interior designer Charlie Willaims from Heritage Bathrooms explains how hotels can inject these into the modern hotel…

Luxurious, modern bathrooms are right at the top of the wishlist for homeowners right now, with many of these individuals now increasingly expecting to see this design-led approach when they book a hotel stay.

We have taken a look at this year’s five of key trends and how you can incorporate them to ensure your bathrooms remain at the cutting edge.

Mixed metallics

Metallics have been in vogue for a number of years now, and this trend is showing no sign of slowing down. The key to making it work in 2019 will be to vary the use of metals to create a standout look that will impress your guests.

Choose a distinctive metallic bath or statement copper brassware. Also consider using accent textures and shade with a traditional chrome mirror frame like Heritage’s arched mirror for a classic finish.

Biophilia

For the uninitiated, biophilia involves bringing a little bit of the outside in – creating warm and welcoming spaces combining plants with natural woods and neutral tones.

A key way to bring this into a hotel space is to maximise natural light. Minimise blinds and curtains to allow the sunlight to pour in and then build a bit of colour on top of the neutral tones by adding an array of low-maintenance plants, or some nature inspired wallpaper.

Memphis Design

The 1980s is alive again and experiencing a bit of a renaissance thanks to the Memphis Design movement.

It doesn’t need to be difficult to incorporate this trend, which makes the most of primary colours and geometry, in a subtle way. Pair a colourful roll top tub, like the Buckingham from Heritage, with some funky towel designs for a bit of pattern and intrigue.

Colour layering

Layered tiles in the bathroom

Bringing a range of colours and shades into a bathroom space can make it feel warm and welcoming, while adding a little bit of interest and intrigue.

Make sure that you include a common thread which ties the room together if you’re going to implement this trend. A good example would be to layer a range of accessories in soft hues on top of a monochrome bathroom suite. This will also enable you to alter your colour scheme according to the different seasons.

Bold black bathrooms

Dark shades can help bring a spa-like quality to a bathroom, creating an indulgent, high-end guest experience.

Make a statement by including a dark freestanding bath, such as the hand finished Alderley Croc Skin Effect from Heritage Bathrooms. Pair it with patterned tiles or wallpaper for an elegant finish.

Round Wood Of Mayfield launches ÖÖD house in the UK

800 533 Hamish Kilburn

The state-of-the-art mirrored building, ÖÖD house, offers the chance to instantly create or enhance a hotel or Airbnb business…

The ÖÖD house – a stunning, 18 sq/m mini home clad in mirrored glass which blends to its natural surroundings – has been added to Round Wood of Mayfield’s collection of high end outdoor structures.

Originally envisaged as a “pop up” hotel guest room or Airbnb pad by Estonian company ÖÖD, it is now exclusively distributed and assembled by the timber and landscape specialists across the UK.

The stand-alone living space for both commercial and domestic clients, which also make ideal office spaces, guest accommodation or even yoga studios, blends beautifully into any setting courtesy of the striking insulated glazing that covers the front and sides.

Other highlights include eco-friendly thermo treated ash cladding to the rear of the structure, which cleverly conceals a service void, and a beautifully finished interior which offers a studio layout with kitchenette and bathroom as well as air conditioning and LED lighting.

A smaller structure – the ÖÖD room is also available exclusively from Round Wood of Mayfield and offers stand-alone recreational spaces without the cost of shower, kitchen and sleeping facilities.

Round Wood of Mayfield officially launched the ÖÖD house at The Landscape Show last September at London’s Battersea Park, with an example now in situ at Lime Cross Nursery in East Sussex which potential customers can view, or even stay in, before purchasing.

The ÖÖD company explains that“ÖÖD allows anyone to jump-start their hospitality business. It quickly enables people to create a living space or start an accommodation business. The outstanding design of our house supports the productivity of your investment.”

“We are really excited to add ÖÖD Houses to our collection as their only UK distributor,” Zac Soudain, director of Round Wood. “It was clear at the launch that these glass-fronted houses really have the wow factor and could be used for many purposes including guest accommodation to garden rooms to offices… they have been generating a lot of excitement.

“Where they really come into their own is in a rural or natural landscape such as where our example ÖÖD house can be viewed at Lime Cross Nursery – it has been kept there since the launch so potential customers can try before they buy.

“For anyone in the hotel and hospitality industry, these ÖÖD houses can provide some very luxurious and novel guest rooms with a fantastic view of the landscape.”

The ÖÖD house, which is available to purchase from £55,000, is easy to install and can be delivered on a lorry before being craned into place, or built on site if access is an issue.

The ÖÖD room is available from £45,000 and comes with air conditioning and standard LED lighting.

Hamilton Litestat’s ‘satin’ metallic accessories bring PANTONE’s Colour Of The Year to life

800 658 Hamish Kilburn

Satin Chrome and Satin Stainless-Steel accessories from Hamilton Litestat bring added energy to Pantone’s vibrant Colour of the Year 2019…

The 2019 must-have palette for interior design, fashion and furnishings is set to include PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral, which has been named Pantone Colour of the Year.

Selected by colour trend experts at the Pantone Color Institute, Living Coral is described as an ‘animating and life-affirming coral hue’. As with such announcements and the subjective nature of colour choice, it has received mixed reviews. Amongst the debate and deliberation, the name ‘living coral’ and its wider social commentary on global warming and the state of our diminishing coral reefs has divided opinion. It’s certainly struck a nerve, with some in full support and others slating it as ‘another marketing ploy’.

Whatever your thoughts on the new Pantone Colour of the Year, there’s no getting away from its warm tones bringing energy yet calmness to a space. It’s buoyant, positive and light-hearted. When used in interior design, PANTONE Living Coral rugs, blankets and upholsteries can create a warm and nurturing feeling, while wall colourings and decorative accessories add a dramatic pop of colour.

The vivid sunset hue works well in monochrome schemes and finds a dynamic partnership with blue, reflecting coral’s harmonious relationship with the sea. In the home, it is complemented by Hamilton’s decorative wiring accessories in Satin Chrome and Satin Stainless finishes, whose metallic and reflective tones link to water and bring extra life and sparkle to the on-trend colour.

In addition to the satin chrome and stainless-steel finishes, Satin Brass and Hamilton’s cost-effective white plastic finish in the Hartland CFX design, create crisp, contemporary interiors. For a more coordinated alternative, Hamilton’s Paintables range allows you to exactly match the Pantone as a plate finish, with this option available in Hartland CFX or Sheer CFX.

With a wide range of designs and finishes, along with functionality to suit the modern, connected household or high-end hotel – including dual 2.4A USB double switched socket plates – Hamilton’s electrical wiring accessories provide the perfect finishing touch for any interior scheme, whatever the shade or design.

Continuing with the collection theme, Anthology’s design names include Anthropic, which represents the interaction of man in the making of fabricated surfaces and the impact time has on materials, Metamorphosis, emulating the geological changes impacting on rock and stone and Pozzolana, one of the constituent parts of plaster and concrete.

Creating the authentic UNILIN Evola surface

800 534 Hamish Kilburn

The desire to make Evola decorative panel surfaces ‘true to life’ saw the UNILIN product design team look to where it all begins: with the original materials…

Working from original materials was the key to the authenticity of UNILIN Evola panels. The design team was packed full of discoveries from the natural world, trade shows and even personal purchases that inspired new decors in HPL and melamine-faced chipboard. Working from these original materials, the UNILIN design team began a process of experimentation.

“If we put our Evola panel next to the real thing, we don’t want to be able to see a difference.”

Ann De Blanck, Evola product manager, explains: “We needed variation, so we started to treat the genuine specimens; for example, adding a patina or saw marks to the decor. That is a job for the specialists, because it’s a very fine line between attractive authenticity and over doing it. Our ultimate goal is always very clear: if we put our Evola panel next to the real thing, we don’t want to be able to see a difference.

“That takes an awful lot of skill. By that, I mean that our team experiments and tries things out by hand, day in and day out. For example, when the ‘reclaimed trend’ was all the rage, we created a decor with cracks in the panel. We did that using a drum that we threw nails and screws into; as the drum turned, they made scratches in the decor. Yet another conscious choice and essential if you want to bring unique products to the market.”

This meticulous attention-to-detail sees UNILIN Evola panels beautifully replicate natural materials. From the deep grain and knots of Nordic Pine’s rustic texture to the subtle, super-matt surface of White Birch, each décor is a true-to-life recreation of original materials. This realism is not only down to the experimentation of the design team, but also through using production technology to develop surface structures synchronous with the design underneath.

“As well as an authentic look, the feel also needs to be right, and this has become more-so in recent years. That’s why we have specialised in developing surfaces where the structure follows the pattern beneath perfectly. This gives a realistic design, hardly distinguishable from solid wood or veneer. A realistic, budget-friendly and sustainable alternative for real material,” explains Blanck.

The UNILIN Evola collection is available in 168 different looks available in HPL, melamine and edging tape. Promising life-like wood decors and authentic embossed textures in concrete and metallics, as well as plain; it is a well-rounded collection that brings beautiful authenticity in scratch and stain-resistant panels for commercial use.

Wilton tees off with bespoke tartan at Huddersfield Golf Club

800 468 Hamish Kilburn

A bespoke tartan carpet made by Wilton Carpets in modern shades of grey and burgundy, now adorns the floor of Centenary Hall, the main function room within Fixby Hall, home of Huddersfield Golf Club…

As part of an ongoing refurbishment of the club’s facilities that has included shower rooms, the Yorkshire Bar, Fixby Room, Conservatory and Entrance, interior designer and House Committee member, Joan Webb of JW Design, Huddersfield, has breathed new life into the club’s main function room and wedding venue.

“We wanted to create a lovely room for members’ functions that would also prove attractive as a wedding venue,” explains Webb. “I knew that a classic tartan design for the carpet would complement Fixby Hall’s historic interior, but I chose a modern palette, teaming this with the silk-effect wallpaper and deep padded pelmets and curtains. The contemporary colour scheme and simplicity of the pelmets balance perfectly with the traditional designs for the curtains, giving the hall a modern feel.”

“Through an 11-row woven axminster construction, Wilton Carpets was able to meet the club’s need for a spike-resistant carpet.”

Working carefully to ensure the new carpet balanced with existing colours in the hall and the decoration schemes of adjacent rooms, Webb turned to Wilton Carpets for the first time, being made aware of the Wiltshire-based manufacturer’s ability to weave carpets in a spike-resistant quality.

Through an 11-row woven axminster construction, Wilton Carpets was able to meet the club’s need for a spike-resistant carpet in a British wool-rich make-up that is perfect for withstanding the demands of a busy function space. Along with a quality that’s durable and easy to maintain, the carpet’s tartan pattern helps to disguise dirt between cleans. Some 150m2 of carpet for the 120-capacity room was woven by Wilton Carpets at its Wiltshire production site.

“Creating the custom design was a simple and quick process and working with Wilton Carpets was a pleasure from start to finish,” adds Webb.

Known as the ‘Home of Yorkshire Golf’, Fixby Hall has a golfing history dating back to 1891 when the original courses were laid out by Tom Dunn, one of the leading golf course architects of the day. Now with its role as a multi-purpose space for members, corporate events, business meetings, family occasions and weddings, Fixby Hall enjoys a year-round calendar of events.

In Conversation With: Moritz Waldemeyer, lighting designer to the stars

950 633 Hamish Kilburn

Lighting designer Moritz Waldemeyer speaks to editor Hamish Kilburn about 2019 trends, the power of lighting therapy and how one moment in time can dramatically change the direction of a creative’s career…

Anyone who has had the pleasure to spend more than five minutes in the company of the multi-talented Moritz Waldemeyer will agree with me when I say that he is a breath of creative, fresh air. Despite having designed LED pieces for major players in popular culture such as music icons Ellie Goulding, WillIAm, Take That and fashion design hero Philip Treacy OBE, Waldemeyer’s head has always remained cool when working on many creative platforms.

Following a career-defining moment of lighting a costume collection for the closing ceremonies of both the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games, Waldemeyer’s recent gaze in the hospitality industry saw him at the centre of many interesting conversations at London Design Festival last year. His personalised lighting installation entitled Journey of Colour at Focus18 raised eyebrows among designers from around the world on the potential of lighting within hotel design. “Timing is everything,” Waldemeyer says. “My knowledge of technology, which is an area that has always interested me, placed me in the design sphere with a unique skillset at the right time.”

Image caption: WAVE chandelier in Intercontinental Davos, which is 1,400 hand-blown glass spheres swirl in a playful shape of a gust of snow,

Waldemeyer’s journey in the world of fashion, design and lighting started with an early interest for technology. Following his studies on mechatronics at Kings College London, Waldemeyer began experimenting with his passion for lighting – and after graduating, he gained experience working for Phillips in the product development team. It was at this moment in time, while other employees were working the nine-to-five, when Waldemeyer started to experiment with lighting and its boundaries. His forward-thinking attitude soon sparked the attention of the fashion world, which led to what was arguably his first major career break.

Virtual Reality – Moritz Waldemeyer for Philip Treacy

Image caption: Virtual Reality – Moritz Waldemeyer for Philip Treacy

Paris Fashion Week 2007 witnessed Hussein Chayalan showcase dresses impregnated with servo-driven lasers that were engineered and programmed by Waldemeyer. With the aim to create a sensational atmosphere that captured the attention of the world’s media, Chayalan turned to Waldemeyer to emit laser beams from the dresses on the models who strutted spectacularly down the catwalk. “It’s a great, indescribable feeling to be part of fashion history,” Waldemeyer shares. “And it was after this show I realised just how revolutionary this was when figures in the music industry got in touch asking me how I could work with them to create visual experiences.”

“I am looking at animated lighting, which is super retro and exciting.”

Waldemeyer’s dip into the world of high-fashion, I believe, gives him a unique leverage when it comes to helping to transform lighting within hotel interior design spaces. But when it comes to looking ahead, it seems as if Waldemeyer is left wondering like the rest of us what defines a ‘trend’. “It’s really difficult to look at trends on a year-by-year basis, because I believe that the development isn’t that fast in lighting,” he comments. “However, from my point of view, we have yet to establish the limits of LED potential. I am looking at animated lighting, which is super retro and exciting.”

Following on from our insight into how the public areas of hotels are changing, there has been many debates about how the lobby and the guestroom can continue to evolve into new eras. Technology within lighting has unlocked the door to welcome in the opportunity of more atmospheric areas within the hotel, which is arguably the key to create the personalised hotel of the future. “Considering that the lobby is the first area that guests walk in to, I believe there is room for designers to be more playful,” he explains. “When it comes to the guestroom, though, I believe we as lighting experts need to ensure that we are creating intuitive lighting that works with the user. It’s a challenge to ensure we are creating seamless lighting experiences that don’t hinder the overall guest experience. It’s sometimes easy to forget when working on large pieces to view the experience from a guests’ point of view, but this is so important when it comes to the design of the lighting.”

“We deliberately use a lot of colour, which is arguably therapeutic with the aim to bring people back to themselves.”

One area within the interior design of hotels that continues to divide opinions is understanding the fundamental purpose of lighting in the guestroom. While designers aim to firmly establish lighting’s functional properties as well as its decorative qualities within the guestroom, there are questions rippling through the industry on how wellbeing can be incorporated within hotel design, and Waldemeyer may have the answer. He explains: “We deliberately use a lot of colour, which is arguably therapeutic with the aim to bring people back to themselves. Art pieces that use light to encourage calmness – similar to watching a roaring open fire – somewhat sedates the tone of the room and the guests’ minds. Using colour in this way has the complete opposite reaction to what happens when we as consumers stare mindlessly at our phones or devices.”

Moritz Waldemeyer's personalised lighting installation, Journey of Colour, was exhibited at Focus 18.

Image caption: Moritz Waldemeyer’s personalised lighting installation, Journey of Colour, was exhibited at Focus 18.

Waldemeyer strikes me as someone who is constantly looking ahead to establish new ways to be creative with lighting. “I’m excited about craftsmanship, which is really big on our agenda at the moment,” says Waldemeyer. “Travelling the world has allowed me to establish new avenues and my task at the moment is to understand how we can present traditional craftsmanship in lighting to a modern audience, which is challenging but also so rewarding at the same time.”

Waldemeyer’s own ‘journey of colour’ is, I believe, still in the very early stages when establishing what is possible within the future of commercial lighting. I leave the creative with focused lenses, now being able to zoom in to understand further the emotional links between our minds and how our hotels are lit. One of the largest conclusions, though, is seeing how outside influences, from areas such as fashion and popular music, can absolutely shed some light on the direction our industry should be heading when it comes to forward-thinking an innovation.

To start, the Buckingham (pictured above)  is a transitional wall-mounted design, as suitable for modern bathrooms as it is traditional rooms. It is made from chromed brass, and can be used on both central heating and hot water systems, further adding to its flexibility. Customers will recognise the customary ball joints, more commonly found on older radiators, but this time benefitting from Bisque’s class-leading heating technology. Customers can also choose from three deluxe finishes – bright nickel, brass and antique bronze – alongside a further six finishes in Bisque’s repertoire.

Next up, the Osbourne is a floor-mounted model, similar in style to its sister radiator, the Balmoral. Offering plenty of space for luxurious towels, it is an equally stylish option for industrial-style homes and loft bathrooms thanks to its antique look.

Traditional radiator in modern bathroom

Finally, the Victorian-style Balmoral is best suited for vintage-inspired interiors. It not only heats the space, but keeps towels crisp and dry thanks to a large, roomy hanging rail to store even the plumpest of linens. Once again, the Balmoral features recognisable ball joints and is available in Bisque’s gorgeous selection of colourways.

The three new designs mark a real turning point for the brand and present customers with a luxury towel radiator which matches style for substance. Being Bisque, innovation and performance is at the forefront of the new collection; while the new designs may look ‘traditional’, there’s nothing old-fashioned about their performance. Bisque uses only the very best materials available to ensure all three designs offer customers an impressive output, and a radiator that will stand the test of time. Meanwhile, Bisque continues to offer the widest selection of designer radiators on the market, from school-style models to eco-friendly options, not to mention its made-to-measure or colour-matching service.

Mitre Linen’s top tips to creating a healthy and hygienic sleep environment

1024 576 Hamish Kilburn

Head of procurement at Mitre Linen, Phillip James, explores the importance of creating a healthy and hygienic sleep environment for your guests and what measures you can take to ensure they can relax in the knowledge that your beds are clean and fresh…

Ensuring that your hotel has exemplary hygiene measures for your guests is a necessity, especially when mattresses and pillows are ideal breeding grounds for dust mites. These microscopic bugs are invisible to the naked eye, however enzymes in the fesses of the dust mite are the second largest cause of allergies in the UK.

Considering that the average person produces between one to two pints of perspiration per night, mattresses and pillows are often the most invested areas due to the constant supply of dead skin cells, moisture and heat from our bodies.

“Dust mite are the second largest cause of allergies in the UK”

Given the significant investments that hotels make in beds, mattresses, pillows and duvets, protecting these assets offers a dual benefit. Guests sleep well with a reduced risk of allergies and hoteliers safeguard their property while extending the lifespan.

Experts in all things related to beds and bedding, Mitre Linen provides expert advice on how hoteliers can provide guests with a hygienic sleep environment and protect their investments.

Mattresses

A mattress represents a considerable financial investment and is worthy of protection against spills, mishaps and untimely deterioration. Today, hotel owners and operators are becoming increasingly convinced of the need to protect against fluids, dust mites and bed bugs and a mattress protector will help to maintain the quality and cleanliness of mattresses.  There are a whole host of mattress protectors and mattress encasements available, here Mitre Linen recommend their favourites:

For accidents and spills, the Cushion Cloud Protector is a must, this cushioned mattress protector provides luxurious comfort with its jacquard knit weave, and it is also waterproof and provides allergy protection for mattresses.

“With more than 5.4 million people in the UK suffering from asthma, the importance of keeping your beds and bedding free from dust mites is becoming more prevalent.”

For total mattress protection, then a Mattress Encasement that fastens around the whole mattress is essential. The Protect A Bed Buglock Plus Encasement is bed bug-escape and entry-proof as well as waterproof and has been test-washed over 200 times to ensure quality and durability.

If budget is a concern, the Mitre Linen Essentials Polyrest Mattress Protector is generously thick and this moisture-resistant protector features a 25cm deep skirt, is easy to launder and will help to prevent mattresses becoming damaged.

Pillows

Considering that within two years, approximately one third of a pillow’s weight is made up of dead skin, dust mites, oil and dirt then protecting pillows is a given.

The Allerzip Smooth Pillow Protector from the Mitre Comfort range saves pillows from contaminants which affect the lifespan and smell of pillows which guests will be quick to notice. The protector is both waterproof and breathable, allowing water vapour to escape. With a handy zip it is also easy to fit and to remove for washing.

The Comfort Quiltop Pillow Protector is an economical housewife flap pillow protector featuring a Hollowfibre filling and polyester cover. It keeps pillows free from spills, stains and excess moisture to preserve their lifespan and keep odours neutralised.

In addition to using mattress and pillow protectors, consider these two recommendations from Mitre Linen:

1) Wash bed linen on a high temperature

Washing bed linen on a high temperature will help to kill bacteria. 100% cotton bed linen can be washed on a high temperature (always check the care labels); not only will this ensure that your beds are thoroughly cleaned, but it will also help to maintain the crisp, white appearance of your bed linen, so beds will look and feel fresh.

2) Consider the type of duvet and pillows

With more than 5.4 million people in the UK suffering from asthma, the importance of keeping your beds and bedding free from dust mites is becoming more prevalent and with bedding and mattresses being renowned for harbouring dust, this can cause many issues that will affect sleep quality. Choosing an anti-allergenic duvet and pillow, like the Healthy Living Range can help provide a healthier sleep environment. Treated with a special Estlon fibre, these duvets and pillows comprise of a reduced fungal level of up to 99.99 per cent in comparison to untreated fibres.

In Conversation with: Michael Seum, how Grohe recreated a classic

800 555 Hamish Kilburn

Grohe’s Vice President of Design, Michael Seum, talks about revisiting a classic, challenging the engineers and creating an icon in the new Atrio (as published in Grohe Magazine No. 2 2018)…

Redesigning a classic is a task not to be taken lightly. It’s a design opportunity that involves walking a tightrope between respecting the past and opening oneself up to contemporary ideas. Grohe’s Vice President of Design Michael Seum, however, was delighted to step up to the challenge with the classic Grohe Atrio faucet. It was, he says, an exciting opportunity to build on the strengths of this Grohe icon while giving it a feeling of timelessness.

Grohe: What was the idea behind the new Atrio?
Michael Seum: For me, the very definition of an icon is something you can draw from memory. We are calling this the icon of elegance and precision. The elegance is drawn from a single circle , or a cylinder right, which is one of the most feminine geometrical features you can find: pure and perfect. It;s a firmly contemporary design, but with the right interior decor strategy, it could fit in a classic or cosmopolitan environment. Because we’ve used such a simple, singular geometry, the precision has an analogue, tactile feel to it. So much of this world is digital and uber-connected that we felt like for our spa collection, we needed to have this tactility. And it’s done in such a way that even when you look at the design, all of the intersections are precise. Nothing is off-centre.

G: How is is driven by the technology that’s inside, like the cartridges?
MS: The quality of the design comes through the craftsmanship and also the precision of our high-quality cartridges. There are three principles that we draw from: the cylindrical element that drives the entire line, an absolutely pure intersection of all these geometries, and lastly, the obsessive attention to proportion. We wanted a design that celebrates the quality of the Grohe cartridge – its the perfect expression of our design DNA.

G: How long, from first sketch to now, have you and your team been working on this?
MS: We had a discussion about the possibility of having the spa geometry perfectly intersect, I think, about 18 months ago. While we came pretty quickly to the idea, the execution was actually the hardest part of the job; getting the engineering team to find a way to do that.

“It really is iconic, it’s beautiful, it’s flexible and it’s simple.”

G: What challenges did you have to overcome with the engineering?
MS: The engineers saw the potential of the design. But they also saw that it was their responsibility to help us realise it. So I’m really pleased at how they’ve embraced the design vision and made all of the technical elements work, going through such meticulous, geometrical work with the Atrio. This is where the precision of the tactile feedback, the craftsmanship, the quality, the handmade aspects – it’s all due to their efforts.

G: How has the feedback on this product been so far?
MS: We’ve had some sneak previews with a few long-standing customers and architects that we have very positive relationships with. We do a lot of work on projects that are two to five years – and the response when we put this on the table is just jaw-dropping. It really is iconic, it’s beautiful, it’s flexible and it’s simple. We designed something that allows architects or consumers to design spaces in so many different ways. The fact that the product is so simple means that it can work with different interior strategies. They see that immediately.

G: What plans do you have for the Atrio in the future?
MS: We will launch it in Spa Colours over time. Because this design is so neutral, we believe that this is the vehicle for expressing new colour and finish possibilities in the bathroom. It’s a design that works in so many different environments, from classic to contemporary to cosmopolitan. It has transformatative affect in those spaces.

In Conversation With: BISQUE’s Ellie Sawdy on 2019 colour trends

800 531 Hamish Kilburn

Ever since Bisque first came on our radar, we have been impressed with how the company has taken a very practical – and historically mundane – item and used it to lift a whole interior space. The brand’s marketing manager, Ellie Sawdy, talks us through major colour trends, radiator pitfalls and 2019 surprises…

Ever since its humble beginnings in 1979, after Geoffrey Ward stumbled across a towel radiator (a product that was revolutionary at the turn of the decade) on his travels and was struck with idea of pioneering attractive radiators in the UK, BISQUE has made a major impact on the interior design scene.

This year has been one of significance for the brand as it settles into a new home and is now able to welcome designers to experience the products at its showroom in the heart of London’s design hub, Islington Business Centre. But what’s next for the company that is always seen to be ahead of the curve – and can a radiator really have the power to change an interior design space? I caught up with the marketing manager whose natural trend radar is helping to steer the company into the future.

Various ranges of colour

Hamish Kilburn: How are radiators more than just heating appliances?
Ellie Sawdy: No longer do you have go with a simple towel rail or a pressed steel panel radiator. With so many options you can now make a bold statement with your radiators. For example the Bisque Arteplano etched copper or brass finishes are like a work of art! Each one is individually acid etched making it completely unique. Its products like these that appeal to those boutique hotels or décor that is going for the wow factor.

“Other trends include brass taps in kitchens and bathrooms.”

HK: What major trends are you seeing for 2019?
ES: We are seeing an increase in earthy tones for 2019, colours such as Spiced Honey which is Dulux’s colour of the year is a versatile colour perfect for a space that you want to be timeless. Bisque’s colour matching service means that we can match to colour like this to have a radiator that blends into your interior. Other trends include brass taps in kitchens and bathrooms. This finish helps you add warmth and shine to your interior. Depending on the finish of the brass you can have an industrial look or and polished clean finish.

“So many colour trends have popped up throughout 2018.”

HK: What can we expect to see in the products launching next year?
ES: Next year Bisque are really focusing on their special finishes. Designers are mixing metals and adding shades of colour steering away from Chrome. With taps, showers and even light switches coming in materials such as polished brass or antique bronze we want to complement these shades to help designers create one seamless look. Our new bathroom products for 2019 work perfectly with traditional bathrooms with matching valves sets to complete the look, all of which are available in a variety of finishes.

Coloured radiator

HK: What are some major pitfalls designers fall down when it comes to selecting the radiators?
ES: With so many beautiful designs you no longer have to try and hide the room radiator or towel rail, why not make it a feature? We allow designers to have something practical and stylish which are often timeless designs.

HK: Can you explain a little bit more about Bisque and its entrance onto hotel design scene?
ES: Bisque has always had a clear mission – to offer beautiful but practical radiators in the most exciting styles, colours and finishes. We have worked with both established designers to create innovative designs and no matter what they style, good design and quality are always paramount. This allows us to work with hotels to create a bespoke offering and provide world-class standards beyond minimal compliance with UK building regulations.

HK: What was the biggest trend surprise of 2018 in interior design?
ES: Colour is here to stay! So many colour trends have popped up throughout 2018 and all have been well received. Colour is creeping into people’s home and making an impact, people have lost the fear of committing to bold patterns and colour.

In almost 40 years, through generation changes and shifting trends, BISQUE has continued to remain at the top of its interior design game by leading the luxury radiator industry into a colourful future. As one major anniversary approaches, we are watching this space carefully to see what’s next.

Students from Peru Receive “Water Research Prize” at the World Architecture Festival

800 600 Hamish Kilburn

GROHE and the World Architecture Festival (WAF) awarded the winner of the International Water Research Prize in Amsterdam, the Netherlands…

Hotel Designs Recommedned Supplier GROHE and World Architectural Festival presented the Water Research Prize to Benen Desmaison who accepted the accolade on behalf of her students of the Pontificia Catholic University of Peru (PCUP). She received the prize money of £10,000, sponsored by WAF and founder partner GROHE. The presentation of the prize took place at the three-day festival’s kick-off.

GROHE and WAF awarded the prize to a small-community water management system in the Amazon Rainforest. The area has the world’s highest precipitation rate per year, yet just under a third of its population has access to water. The PCUP team has developed a solution that collects, stores and processes rainwater using pipes. The project won against twelve competitors. The finalists on the competition’s shortlist were selected out of a total of 60 submissions.

Work on the production of a rainwater storage system continues

Commenting on the win, Desmaison said: “We are very grateful for this award as it will allow us and the communities in the Amazon Rainforest that work with us to continue to explore alternatives for the provision of water to peri-urban and rural areas. We aim to use this opportunity to work on the production of a rainwater storage system made using local materials and knowledge that can be easily integrated with traditional architectural typologies.”

“First, when we were identifying projects with water scarcity issues, I could not imagine that the Peruvian Amazon would place on the shortlist,” said Michael Seum, Vice President Design at GROHE. “However, this carefully considered project highlights that less than a third of the population has access to water and the proposal of a communal water management system integrating pre-existing water networks sounds like a pragmatic and innovative solution. We are proud to present the £10,000 prize money for this research project.”

The Water Research Prize, which GROHE and WAF use to support the PCUP team’s existing research, is based on the WAF Manifesto published last year. It describes the most important challenges for architects within the next ten years. Proper handling of water is a top priority. Other categories include topics such as the ageing of society and health, climate, energy and carbon, ethics and values, power and justice, smart cities, building technologies, recycling and virtual worlds.

“At GROHE, we want to contribute to a better understanding of how water relates to its built environment. As such, we’re more than happy to support an architectural award that honours relevant research initiatives,” said Christopher Barger, Senior Vice President of Global Projects at GROHE. “I would like to thank the students of PCUP for bringing this specific water-related issue in the Amazon Rainforest to our attention. In addition, I want to congratulate them on the innovative solution that they have developed for this problem.”

In addition to other Manifesto-related awards, the WAF also honours numerous architecture awards. In 2018, a total of more than 500 projects from over 50 countries have been shortlisted for awards in more than 30 categories. During the three-day event the finalists present live to the panel of international jury across three days of live judging. As in the past year, GROHE sponsors the “World Building of the Year Award”, which will be presented on 30th November. In addition, GROHE supports the awards in the categories “Hotel and Leisure” and “Housing and Residential”.

Duravit sweeps the board at the German Design Awards winning four awards

800 529 Hamish Kilburn

Duravit stands out at the 2018 German Design Awards with a Special Mention for the new Brioso bathroom furniture range and three “Winner” accolades for the XSquare, Shower+Bath and DuraSystem series…

Recommended Supplier Duravit has come away from the 2018 German Design Awards with a total of four awards and new titles, as the panel of judges recognise key products in the brand’s portfolio.

The Special Mention recognises works with designs demonstrating particularly successful details or solutions. This award honours the commitment of companies and designers.

Brioso by Duravit received the Special Mention award. With “Brioso”, Duravit and designer Christian Werner have created a range of furniture that represents relaxation, freshness and “joie de vivre” for contemporary bathroom interiors. Its distinctive features include a precise, finely nuanced geometry produced by slender cabinet frames that form the edge of the furniture, mirrors, and mirror cabinets.

The prestigious German Design Award 2019’s goal is to “discover, present, and honour unique trends in design.”

XSquare – Winner
Duravit’s XSquare was another winner of the evening. The furniture ranged was designed with Kurt Merki Jr. to match the style of the DuraSquare washbasins. The quadrant-shaped chrome profile which edges the furniture emphasises the striking design. While on the floor-standing model, the transition to the base is absolutely seamless, the chrome profile accentuates the frame of both variants.

Shower + Bath – Winner
The ingenious Shower+Bath, which unites a contemporary idea with creative use of space: the design by EOOS features a walk-in shower and bathtub in one, was the third winner of the evening. The integrated glass door turns the bathtub quickly and easily into an open shower with straightforward access.

Duravit has already received ten awards in 2018.

DuraSystem® – Winner
With the DuraSystem installation frames, Duravit offers an entire range of bathroom fittings, in front of and behind the wall, from a single source. The electronic “A2” sensor plate in white glass permits contact-free operation.

The German Design Award is a premium international prize given by the Rat für Formgebung (Council for Design). Each year high-calibre submissions in product and communication design are recognised, each in its own way a pioneer in the international design landscape.

Duravit has already received ten awards in 2018 including the IF Award, the Red Dot Award and now the German Design Award 2019 as well as more than 170 international design awards since the start of the 1990s.

Successfully installed in prestigious golf and country clubs the world over, Wilton continues to deliver stylish tailor-made carpets that reflect the ambitions of these multi-purpose venues to be a welcoming, high-quality space for members and bookings.

Whether designs straight off the loom with ready-to-go stock designs, a semi-custom carpet with Ready to Weave, or a completely bespoke pattern created with the design team at the Wilton, the company has something to offer every size of establishment. For a carpet that embraces high standards and reflects the design and ambience of the building in question, golf clubs need look no further than the British manufacturer. Weaving beautiful wool carpet in the Wiltshire town from which the company derives its name, Wilton can provide numerous qualities to suit the individual needs of spaces.  Whether a purposeful seven-row woven axminster for general use areas, nine-row for function spaces, or 11-row spike-resistant carpet for thoroughfares and course entrances; each carpet retains the quality and longevity that has made woven carpet the recognised premium choice for golf and country clubs.

Now with the excellent value of ready-to-go carpets, Wilton is ensuring clubs can begin enjoying a new British wool carpet with excellent value and no minimum order in just 14 days. The collection holds a broad library of traditional and modern designs, including exciting fusions such as the new Kinetic or Urban ranges and the distressed vintage tartans of Nova Scotia. Meeting the challenge when a fast refurbishment is required, Ready to Go offers huge scope to find the ideal carpet.

For a carpet that can echo a club’s identity, or simply tie-in beautifully to a colour scheme, the Ready to Weave concept allows any design to be created in a combination of colours selected from one of three permanently-loomed palettes. The advantage here is a bespoke look with quicker production and a more obtainable cost from a minimum order of 100m2. Ready to Weave is fast becoming a favourite among golf clubs refurbishing interiors and wanting to add a touch of personalisation.

From club motifs and logos to intricate traditional or modern patterns, the Wilton Carpets bespoke programme delivers the very finest wool-rich woven axminster carpets.

Design, print, launch: Morgan’s Rio 2 collection unveiled

640 510 Hamish Kilburn
Hotel Designs Recommended Supplier Morgan Furniture will showcase new design, Rio 2 collection, at SLEEP +EAT…

Contract furniture designer and manufacturer Morgan Furniture will launch its new Rio 2 collection, created in collaboration with studio Integrate, at Sleep + Eat 2018 (November 20-21, Olympia London) on stand C60.

Through its Clerkenwell showroom art installations and furniture designs, Morgan is always seeking out new ways to celebrate the art of collaboration – and the Rio 2 table collection will be its most recent collaborative project.

Combining skills and expertise with architect Mehran Gharleghi of studio INTEGRATE, Morgan will introduce a new collection of tables for the contract market that include 3D printed components. The first of its kind within the sector to include this cutting edge technology with a commercially viable price point, the sophisticated and luxurious collection is not to be missed.

“Rio 1 was a new collection to be exposed to the mass market, and contract furniture industry. We experimented a lot and learnt so much from it. We listened to our customers and took their feedback into account,” said Gharleghi. “We ultimately decided to add new variation to the existing collections which was a super exciting journey. In Rio 2 we carefully designed a collection that maintains the iconic look and the unique experience that we aimed to provide to our audience, and yet add a distinctly different look and materials to our existing collection. One of the Rio 02 variations is still on its way and we cant wait to show it to people. Overall we believe we have been successful in maintaining the original ethos of the Rio 01 collection and move one step forward in almost every aspect of design.”

The first Rio collection was launched in 2016, combining the skills and expertise of the Morgan team with Mehran Gharleghi’s knowledge of new technologies to explore the relationship between the craft of yesterday and the craft of tomorrow.

The second generation sees two new table designs. With this version, a greater understanding of the technology provided the designers with increased creative scope, resulting in a more geometric and regular aesthetic, as opposed to the organic feel of the first generation. The use of materials was also reduced and refined, adding further options to the entirety of the collection. On the edge of design and technology, the tables are an iconic piece at an affordable price.

The collection uses a polyamide 3D printed component as the main structure with which to attach a glass or timber top and timber turned legs. This joining element was designed using a mathematical algorithm to create a unique framework that could not have been made via any other process. The technique is an additive process and therefore not only offers design freedom, but also a sustainable manufacturing solution.

Both Mehran and Katerina Zachariades, Morgan’s design director, approach design in different ways; Katerina sketches and draws to scale with a pen, whilst Mehran designs digitally through modelling. Initially this resulted in a series of miniature 3D printed resin prototypes from Mehran and then full-scale models from Morgan. These two processes allowed the team to review the design both aesthetically and in terms of scale and proportions giving an immediate sense of reality.

Q&A with the architect

Hamish Kilburn: What’s your favourite colour?

Mehran Gharleghi: My favourite colour from the existing collection is walnut with the black basket. I personally prefer the higher tables as I find them more elegant. However, a lot of our customers have preferred shorter versions. We are currently in the process of creating a back table with black legs, with clear glass. We haven’t done this before and I haven’t seen the outcome yet. But I think it’ll look very sharp and I can’t wait to see it.

HK: Where do you find your inspiration?

MG: I find inspirations in nature, history and culture. Seemingly they are very different, however they all have one thing in common. They all evolve gradually, over a long and extended period of time in a step by step manner. I believe we have followed the same principal in designing the Rio Collection. We haven’t looked at emerging technologies, such as 3D printing as an element that disrupt traditional craftsmanship. We considered it as an addition to the existing methods of making. We have maintained the traditional and careful craftmanship of Morgan furniture and added a new dimension and experience to it. Using the new technologies enabled us to go one step further and provide a new experience for our audience.

HK: What’s the key to a successful collaboration?

MG: Understanding and respecting different skill set, vision and expertise that collaborators are able to bring on the table is the most important element to a successful collaboration. Establishing a design method where all contributors are able to freely share their input in an iterative process leads to very successful outcomes.  My relationship with Morgan team began very positively few years ago. It got better and better over time and now we consider each other as one extended team and have established a seamless collaboration method. Our working process is very enjoyable which I believe is crucial in creating ambitious and high risk projects and products.

HK: What’s the most interesting trend you are seeing for 2019?

MG: I can’t follow trends. I know what I’m interested and am focused on getting better at my own passion every day. I have a fascination with design and technology. I believe both of these areas can significantly improve our quality of lives and have dedicated my life and practice to it.

Through the design process, Morgan and Mehran managed to bring down the production cost significantly and increase the factor of strength three fold. This was done by introducing geometric differentiation in various parts of the table according to the structural analysis conducted by Morgan Studio. Digital analyses were informed by previous Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) testing and guidelines. By establishing an iterative feedback loop between design and analysis, the team perfectly balanced the cost, strength and aesthetic of the collection.

Design-led sign and display specialist, Signbox, launches new eshop

1024 546 Hamish Kilburn
Recommended Supplier Signbox launches new eshop with a large range of stocked sign products available for hotels…

Offering intelligently designed, off-the-shelf sign and display solutions, from Fire Exit signs, to NFC Smart Stickers to LED-illuminated restroom signs and everything in between, Signbox’s new eshop is easy to browse and offers rapid delivery on a huge range of stocked products.

UK-based Signbox is a leading signage specialist with over 33 years’ industry experience. With intelligent design and application, the company consistently delivers award-winning visual communication strategies via traditional and pioneering signage methods across a number of market sectors, including corporate, education, healthcare, retail, hotel and leisure.

“We’re known for our bespoke, high-end graphic interior and external signage solutions,” says Managing Director Mark Bartlett. “But we also supply simple off-the-shelf signage for a variety of business sectors and we have been working for some time on a solution to streamline that offering and make it as accessible and efficient as possible. Our new eshop is SEO friendly, easy to navigate and we’re confident that the significant investment we’ve made in getting it up and running will be well worth it.”

“With a proven formula based on contemporary design, technical innovation and engineering excellence, Signbox’s holistic approach continues to put the company at the forefront of architectural signage.”

As any business owner knows – the two great challenges with getting a project like this off the ground are time and money. Finding the time to put into it amid all the day-to-day pressures and deadlines is never easy, and getting a project like this right requires a substantial financial investment as well. Key to finding the finances for the project was an R&D tax credit incentive scheme that we were made aware of through our association with FESPA. There is an explicit regulation within UK company tax law designed to ease the tax burden on businesses who are investing heavily in R&D, and two years ago we decided to explore this as an avenue to find the necessary funds to grow and adapt our business. Like any tax regulation it is a highly complex process, so we were grateful for the assistance of Kene Partners whose services we employed to walk us through this regulatory minefield and help us to maximise our business growth opportunities.

“With Adam Kene and his teams’ help, over the course of the last two years, we’ve managed to save a six-figure sum off our corporation tax bill which we have been able to invest back into the business: training and up-skilling staff, purchasing a new Zund precision cutting device to automate production, a new Trotec laser and of course investing in the digital infrastructure which has made our attractive fresh, user-friendly eshop a reality. We’d encourage any business looking for growth opportunities to explore this as an option,” Bartlett concludes. “As investing in the future benefits consumers and the wider economy as well as helping individual companies to grow.”

With a proven formula based on contemporary design, technical innovation and engineering excellence, Signbox’s holistic approach continues to put the company at the forefront of architectural signage. Sourcing and implementing cutting edge technologies and high quality sustainable materials, the company is renowned for delivering powerful interior and exterior signage projects for a diverse range of global brands in the UK, Europe, the Americas and the Far East – all of which are compliant, future-proof and visually arresting.

Wilton Carpets’ Ethereal collection heads to The Imperial Banqueting Suite

355 250 Hamish Kilburn
Wilton Carpets has expanded into the wedding venue Preston’s Imperial Banqueting Suite…

The Ethereal collection of wool-rich woven axminster by Wilton Carpets has inspired a new floor for the mezzanine at Preston’s Imperial Banqueting Suite, a new wedding venue inspired by Dubai’s luxury hotels.

The space, which is capable of accommodating up to 950 guests, boasts fascinating interiors that includes geometric Islamic art throughout in bespoke fret work, brass lanterns and gilded brass reception area bars, which was designed by Petal Interiors.

“As soon as I saw the Ethereal collection from Wilton Carpets, I was adamant that it would take a role in one of my projects,” said Nita Patel, creative designer.

“The mezzanine level at the Imperial proved the perfect canvas, capturing the beauty of design in full. Fortunately, as soon as I presented it on mood boards for the scheme, the client loved it too.”

Having decided on Ethereal, Patel worked with Wilton’s design team, led by the creator of Ethereal, Damian Roscoe, to recolour her chosen design. “The right colours were crucial in ensuring we could get the correct balance and capture every detail of the stunning pattern. Wilton’s designers were amazing in helping me to achieve this, while also working within the confines of the interior scheme,” added Patel.

Once the colourway had been chosen, the next stage saw the development of the bespoke carpets that was used on the stairs, landing areas and rooms. Since the stairs required safety treads, clarity was a clear requirement for the company.

Patel continued: “A heavy pattern would have made stair treads hard to see, so this design was more about texture and colour. Using the same palette created for the main carpet helped to create flow, yet also allowed me to define specific tasks – blue for the stairs and landings, and a taupe for the immediate adjoining rooms.”

Woven by Wilton Carpets from British wool in a performance 80/20 blend, the carpets provide the ideal combination for wear-resistance, ease of maintenance and value.

Grey modern bathroom

TREND ALERT: Favourite shades of grey in the bathroom

800 601 Hamish Kilburn

Hotel Designs editor Hamish Kilburn – with the help of bathroom specialists Duravit – investigates why grey continues to be the colour trend of choice for many designers and architects in the bathroom…

Sharing the same opinion as that of the new Managing Director of WATG London, Martin Pease, bathroom specialist Duravit believes that grey is one of the best-loved colours in architecture and interior design. Evident in Duravit’s recent collection, the colour is used to further creates the clarity and sense of space to emphasise the impact of rooms, interiors, and therefore architecture.

“Grey provides a perfect contrast in combination with wooden furniture.”

Referenced in a press release by the bathroom manufacturer, grey is also becoming more popular in the bathroom, as exposed concrete or tiles in a range of grey shades, soft grey wall paint through to dark anthracite tones and accessories are today’s trends. Grey provides a perfect contrast in combination with wooden furniture; in interaction with sober colours such as the new Duravit furniture colour matt concrete grey it underlines a uniform, timeless look.

The Stonetto shower tray, too, is setting the tone in colour terms: in addition to the stone shades white, sand, and anthracite, the successful collaboration between Duravit and the Viennese design group EOOS is now available in the colour concrete, which creates a new and fresh effect within the room.

The Stonetto features a stone-like yet uniform texture. The silky-soft surface is incomparable to the touch. It is matt and at the same time anti-slip and scratch-proof. Stonetto is made from Durasolid Q, a high-grade cast mineral material. Stonetto is also impressive in functional terms. Its high surface hardness and density mean that the shower tray is extraordinarily resistant to damage and dirt.

The barely visible slope of the tray enables water to drain away perfectly. Even large quantities of water flow quickly through the powerful drain. The homogenous covering enables ease of cleaning. Stonetto can be installed flush with the floor, recessed or floor-mounted. Duravit also supplies Stonetto in twelve sizes.

Bisque introduces rustic finishes to Classic collection

800 613 Hamish Kilburn

Bisque, the UK’s first ever luxury radiator brand, has unveiled two new distinctive finishes for spring 2018, Rustique and Rose Copper. Both styles are produced using an oxidation technique, creating a truly authentic finish. These bespoke designs are made to order and are available exclusively on Bisque’s Classic collection of radiators and from its newly opened showroom in Islington.

The organic Rustique finish is not simply a paint effect but is created by spraying iron metal over a base coat. This is followed by a water-based solution, which produces a rust patina, making the result individual every time – similar to the brand’s much loved Arteplano. The Classic is primed, coated and lacquered throughout the process to ensure you achieve an authentic ‘rust’ finish of paramount quality.

Next up is the Rose Copper finish, which contains genuine copper and is finished with a matt lacquer, to prevent further tarnishing. This ultimately maintains its gorgeous rose colour and beautiful glow.
The Classic is by far Bisque’s most popular design and today offers a variety of models in various and sizes and styles. In addition to thirty-eight stock sizes, Bisque also offers a vast range of bespoke size options and can colour match to popular paint ranges such as Farrow & Ball and Little Greene.

In Conversation with: Fabrics experts at Mitre Linen

800 533 Hamish Kilburn

Concluding our month of putting Fabrics in the spotlight, editor of Hotel Designs Hamish Kilburn sat down with the general manager of Mitre Linen, Kate Gough, to explore more around trends and how the company is moving with modern times…

Personally, I’m a soft pillow kind of man – take from that what you will. My colleague to the left of me on the other hand disagrees entirely and insists that without a hard pillow in a hotel he will not sleep a wink. A hotel that claims to be luxury that does not offer a good night’s sleep is not somewhere guests will rush back to check in to after they’ve checked out. Therefore, keeping the pillow options open to all and investing in good linen will go far to ensuring your guests have a comfortable stay.

As technology continues to evolve, and while interior trends flow into the duvet, I sat down with linen experts Mitre Linen to put the topic into perspective.

Hamish Kilburn: How has the company evolved with technology moving forwards?

Kate Gough: Over the years, we have built a reputation for quality and reliability that has earned us the honour of HM The Queen’s Royal Warrant, which we have proudly held since 1955. Over the past 70 years, we have seen many changes within the industry, including major technological advances which have had a significant impact on many areas of our business, however, our key focus remains the same – offering exceptional customer service.

We work as hard as ever to ensure that anyone who contacts the Mitre team is left feeling delighted. Our friendly team, based in Merthyr Tydfil, in the heart of the Welsh valleys, has always been at the end of the phone to take orders, or offer advice and support to our customers. For those who prefer to, online orders can be placed quickly and easily via our new website, with a convenient Fast Order option available for those in a hurry, while those seeking advice or with product queries can take advantage of our new online LiveChat feature, which is available Monday-Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm.

We have created a selection of handy online Mitre Guides which is easily accessed via our website, helping our customers to make the right product choices for their needs. We also give online insight into the latest industry trends with our regularly updated Mitre Articles, which offer valuable advice from our experts, on topics such as the effective use of colour in hotel rooms, and tips on how to create a hygienic sleep environment.

The average person produces one to two pints of sweat every night

HK: What are your thoughts on the pillow menu?

KG: The right pillow is essential to a comfortable night’s sleep – pillow menus are easy to create and can be as simple as offering the option of either a hard and soft pillow, depending on a guest’s personal preference. Mitre Linen offers a wide variety of pillow styles and constructions available to suit the desires of any sleeper, and we are happy to guide you in your choices, making it easy for your business to provide the perfect pillow menu.

Our best-selling Comfort Palace Pillow features Quallofil extra life fibre which keeps it thick and plump, whilst ensuring a longer lifespan. The flame-retardant pillow is highly resistant to flattening, maintaining its shape after every use whilst retaining its soft profile, ensuring it’s quick and easy to achieve a welcoming bed. The Comfort Palace Pillow makes a great soft option for a pillow menu.

The Comfort Ultraloft Pillow would be ideal as a firm option for a pillow menu. With a Hollowfibre fill, its thick, plump design has a weight of 850g. Covered in durable polycotton, it’s designed to last through regular heavy-duty use, and is flame retardant.

We would also recommend that a pillow menu include at least one microfibre option, in order to offer the comfortable feel of feather and down without the risk of allergy. Mitre Linen’s Luxury Microfibre pillows are available in soft and firm variants, have 100% cotton covers with a 233 thread count, and conform perfectly to the head and neck to offer soft and comfortable support.

For further information, see our detailed pillow guide.

HK: How often should hotels replace bed linen?

KG: Bed linen such as duvet covers and sheets should be replaced at the first sign of wear and tear. Within two years, one third of a pillow’s weight is made up of dead skin, dust mites, oil and dirt and considering that the average person produces one to two pints of sweat every night, then pillows and duvets should be regularly replaced.  Protectors are invaluable to prolong the life of mattresses, duvets and pillows. Not only do they provide a more hygienic sleeping environment for your guests as they can be regularly washed, but they also extend the life of bedding which is a significant investment for a business.

HK: What are your thoughts on colourful bed sheets in the hotel guestroom?

KG: Our white satin polycotton range is our biggest seller, and whilst recent Mitre Connects* hotelier feedback confirmed that white bedlinen is perennially popular, we did note quite a few comments requesting a larger range of good quality colourful bed linen. In response to this valuable feedback we have added colour options into our Egyptian Cotton Range – our gorgeous 100% cotton percale bedlinen is now also available in ruby red, raisin, blush pink, lead grey and saffron yellow, as well as our ever popular white.

HK: What advice would you give to hotels when it comes to caring for bed linen?

KG: Freshly laundered, pristine, smooth and crease free bedlinen always rates highly for guests when they stay at a hotel so for those who launder on site, here are some care tips:

Always wash cotton bedlinen before use, at 50°C or 60°C. Expect 4-8 per cent shrinkage (Mitre Linen sizing allows for this). Hot iron when slightly damp to give a crisp finish. Don’t bleach, as this will reduce the life of the product. Soak stained bedding in water if immediate laundering is not possible.

Wash polycotton bedlinen at 50°C. Use a detergent intended for colours (to avoid colour fade due to OBA build up). A light iron is suggested.

For further advice on laundry care, please refer to our Linen Care Guide at www.mitrelinen.co.uk/care-guide.

Bisque balances sexy and sophisticated in black

800 524 Hamish Kilburn

Bisque – the UK’s first ever designer heating brand and pioneer of innovative radiator design – has unveiled a suave and sophisticated matt black finish to join its existing range of colour options.

Once considered gloomy or gothic, matt black styles are enjoying something of a renaissance

The new matt black option has a soft, sateen finish for that extra-luxurious finishing touch. It is now available on a selection of Bisque’s most popular models, including its iconic school-style Classic and timeless Deline towel rail.

Once considered gloomy or gothic, matt black styles are enjoying something of a renaissance thanks to leading interior designers such as Abigail Ahern incorporating moody colour palettes into interior schemes. Matt black, along with shades of dark grey and anthracite, can be stylish and stimulating as opposed to oppressing. Create a focal point in a hallway, living room, bedroom or dining room with one of Bisque’s general purpose radiators, or co-ordinate your chosen model with your paint or accessories for a more mature look.

Black radiator in bathroom

Moreover, Bisque’s matt black Deline has been introduced following the increasing popularity of coloured baths and brassware in bathrooms. Offering customers an eye-catching alternative to traditional white sanitaryware and polished chrome, matt black finishes create a striking contrast in this otherwise neutral space.

Bisque’s latest colourway joins an already extensive array of colours and finishes in the brand’s repertoire – from pretty pastels and bold brights to metallics, bare metal lacquers and even textured quartz finishes. It offers its customers an unrivalled choice, thanks to its bespoke colour-match service when only a precise shade will do.

Bisque is continuously working behind the scenes to bring its customers the most exciting styles available.

Understanding lighting technology with Hamilton Litestat

800 349 Hamish Kilburn

Following on from Hotel Designs’ Spotlight On’ feature of Technology last month, editor Hamish Kilburn sat down with the marketing manager of Hamilton Litestat to explore lighting trends, clever ways to illuminate the guestroom and how products are changing…

Last month, Hotel Designs lit up the conversation around in-hotel technology and where trends are heading in the near future of hotel design. One conversation that came up time and time again was the idea of designers using lighting in more savvy ways to create a certain ambiance. With this in mind, I decided to ask the experts at Hamilton Litestat who are ahead of the curve and in-the-know when it comes to the future of lighting technology in the guestroom and beyond.

Hamish Kilburn: How has lighting recently become more of a focus in guestroom design?

Gavin Williams: Lighting has always played a significant role in the guest experience of a hotel. First impressions count and from the moment a guest sees the hotel building and walks into reception, lighting is being used to create a statement about the hotel.

Lighting control certainly doesn’t need to be complicated

Within a hotel’s guestrooms, lighting control provides important functionality. In the week, many guests are business people who need to use their rooms as a place of work during the day. Then, in the evenings – as well as weekend guests – they want to use the space to relax. Lighting control transforms these spaces between the different functional requirements, easing from bright work-appropriate lighting into softer mood lighting at the touch of a button or swipe of a finger.

This also applies to the function rooms, restaurants and bars within a hotel. The atmosphere – and therefore the lighting requirements – for breakfast is very different to an evening meal setting, so lighting control can support this space transformation too.

We take the brief and turn it into the desired solution with no headaches

HK: I think a lot of designers shudder at the thought of lighting control in the guestroom. Can you put their minds at ease by telling us what makes Hamilton’s products user friendly?

GW: Lighting control certainly doesn’t need to be complicated. From a designer’s perspective, all they need to do is tell Hamilton what effects they want to achieve, and our team will deliver a pre-programmed system to suit. Designers don’t need to know the ins and outs of how the system works, that’s Hamilton’s job! We take the brief and turn it into the desired solution with no headaches.

Our solutions offer a range of effects, so designers should consider the result they’re after and whether they’d like dimming control, the ability to mix light and colour with DMX options, or the ability to set scenes. If they’re unsure, they can visit Hamilton’s showrooms in Bristol or at the Mere facilities to talk through the options and see demonstrations so they have the confidence that the system will deliver their lighting ideas.

And, even more importantly, our smart lighting control solutions make things simple for guests too. They can be controlled by simple yet elegant button switches that are available in a range of designs, easy-to-use glass control panels or via an accessible app on a smart device.

We’ve found exhibitions such as Decorex, The Independent Hotel Show and the recently rebranded SLEEP+EAT particularly helpful for keeping abreast of the latest trends

HK: Do you keep track of trends, and what lighting products are most popular for hotels?

GW: Yes, we make sure we take notice of the lighting trends within the hotel sector, and the general design trends. Both are very important to our business. Our smart lighting control solutions can help achieve these looks, but as we also design and manufacture decorative wiring accessories, we offer switched plates and sockets with the latest on-trend finishes.

We’ve found exhibitions such as Decorex, The Independent Hotel Show and the recently rebranded SLEEP+EAT particularly helpful for keeping abreast of the latest trends. We exhibit at these shows and have both hoteliers and designers visit our stand, so we often find ourselves discussing current trends and themes that require lighting control. We also participate in the Hotel Designs networking events, which we find very useful. Hamilton’s solution is very flexible and can be programmed to deliver more complex solutions as and when new trends and requirements come in, but we’re also always happy to build a bespoke system to meet a specific design brief.

HK: Can you explain the creative elements with regards to what goes into designing a new product?

GW: Products are bought, not sold, so new product development must be driven by talking to customers and uncovering what is missing from the current market offering, or what is not working with existing products on the shelves. In terms of the crucial elements when designing a new product, function and form has always been important to Hamilton and balancing these two elements is something we pride ourselves on. We ensure our products deliver smooth, seamless and effective functionality in a product that’s attractive and well-designed.

In a hotel, the bulk of any lighting control system will be installed out of view in the hotel’s hub room. It’s only the control plates that are visible in guestrooms so, typically, a designer wants to create a special control plate, one that has a unique shape or finish to coordinate with other wiring accessories in the design scheme.

The majority of Hamilton’s products are manufactured in our factory in Bristol

As pioneers in the manufacture of decorative plates for switches, sockets and lighting controls, Hamilton has accrued 50 years’ experience in meeting the specifications of designers and hoteliers. We simply need some guidance on the function, style and finish that’s being sought, and we will interpret these wishes to provide a suitable solution. The Hamilton design team can offer 3D CAD drawings so that customers can view product designs from different angles and perspectives to ensure it meets the most exacting requirements. This also shortens the lead time from design to product sampling. We’re also happy to create highly finished sample prototypes for a designer to present to their client to help them buy into their design ideas.

HK: How are Hamilton Litestat products made?

Roca’s new collection takes inspiration from the past

800 566 Hamish Kilburn

The new Carmen collection from Roca speaks to the past as well as the future. Its beautiful nostalgic design is based on a classic Roca collection from the 1940s and has been launched to celebrate the company’s centenary.

“Over the last few years, the trend for vintage and classical design has continued to grow,” comments Alan Dodds, Managing Director of Roca UK. “From the research we have conducted, vintage means more than just antiques, it is about classic and timeless design that is still relevant today. That is why we have introduced Carmen, it is a collection that is routed in the past but has all the attributes to complement a modern bathroom.”

Carmen may be vintage looking in design, but it features the latest in technology and material innovations. For example, the WC is rimless for greater hygiene and easier cleaning as well as being fitted with a water distributor that provides an improved flushing performance. The seat cover has been manufactured with SUPRALIT®, a new exclusive resin registered by Roca. This is more durable (offering greater resistance to chemical agents and to discolouration), more hygienic (four times less porous material) and easier to clean (surface with soft and rounded angles).

The collection includes a close coupled WC, basin and pedestal, with a complementary furniture range and mirror also available.

Roca has also developed a range of Carmen brassware to complete the product family. Just like the bathroom suite, the brassware has an authentic period design whilst incorporating innovative technology.  The Carmen brassware collection features the latest generation of flow limiters that guarantee a 5l/m flow, regardless of the system pressure. As well as its ceramic disc operation, the Carmen taps has the Roca Evershine electroplating process applied for anticorrosion, lifetime brightness and anti-scratching.

Along with its authentic Roca design and the latest innovations built into the ceramics and furniture, Carmen gives real value for money.

Wilton Carpet Urban Range

A new urban landscape from Wilton Carpets

800 635 Hamish Kilburn

Urban is the latest ready-to-go carpet range by Wilton Carpets…

The latest ‘Ready to Go’ carpet range from Wilton Carpets captures echoes of urban decay and regeneration for hospitality environments seeking fresh takes on modern carpet design.

Urban Contour, available in five colourways from the brand-new Creations palette, reveals an abstract multi-tonal base through a diffracted interconnecting and spiralling hexagon motif. Urban Terrain takes a similar background, dominant beneath a heavily broken grid in a design reflecting the decaying, rusted and Verdigris surfaces so familiar in the city landscape; also available in five colourways from the Creations palette.

In colourways such as Burnt Copper, Gun Metal, Fjord, Granite, Karma and Demerara, Urban owes much of its modern feel to the latest Ready to Go colour palette. “We’ve developed the Creations palette to provide complementing and contrasting colours perfect for use in hotels, entertainment and leisure venues, civic spaces and heritage buildings,” explained Damian Roscoe, head of creative at Wilton Carpets. “Urban is among the first Ready to Go range to embrace its use and shows just how this dynamic palette can bring a broad scope in colourways perfect for today’s design-demanding venues.”

Woven on axminster looms in Wiltshire, Urban is crafted from 80 per cent pure new wool and 20 per cent nylon to provide an affordable, long-lasting blend in an enduring eight-row quality perfect throughout demanding public areas. It joins Havana and Nova Scotia as Ready to Go ranges featuring the brand-new Creations palette.

As with all ‘Ready to Go’ collections, Urban is available on a 14-day fast-turnaround with no minimum order quantity.

XSquare console vanity unit in White Satin Matt, with console in Dark Walnut, DuraSquare above counter basin with C.1 tap fitting (Design by Kurt Merki Jr.)

XSquare from Duravit: contemporary elegance and comfort in the bathroom

1024 708 Hamish Kilburn

The XSquare bathroom range from Duravit impresses with its contemporary – yet elegant design, high-quality surfaces and materials and striking chrome profiles…

In conjunction with designer Kurt Merki Jr., Duravit has created a furniture range that is specially attuned to the design of the contemporary DuraSquare washbasins. The striking feature is the quadrant-shaped chrome profile edging the furniture. On the floor-standing model, the transition to the leg frame is absolutely seamless. The chrome profile accentuates the edges of both variants. It continues along the corner radius of the washbasin, creating harmony and a striking independence.

Combined with cupboards, mirrors and mirror-cabinet solutions from the range, also designed with the clearly visible chrome profile, luxurious washing areas can be created featuring an elegantly contemporary furnishing style.

Image caption: XSquare is suitable for small bathrooms

XSquare offers various options and combinations and perfectly matches the current DuraSquare, Vero Air, ME by Starck and P3 Comforts ceramic series. High- quality and uniform interior design ideas can be realised, including free-standing or built-in bathtubs, toilets, tap fittings, shower trays and accessories.

The sky’s the limit both in terms of the potential variants and also the choice of colours. The console washbasin vanity units are available in up to five different sizes (800-1600 mm) depending on the ceramics – also offering space for generous dual washbasin solutions. Compact versions round off the range for all manner of rooms and design requirements.

The selection of vanity units is extremely varied: up to seven different widths can be chosen for the DuraSquare, Vero Air, ME by Starck or P3 Comforts vanity units, depending on the series. The option of one or two drawers applies for all vanity units. These are fitted with high-quality drawer dividers in Maple or Walnut. The tall cabinet and semi-tall cabinet offer additional storage space in widths of 420 or 500 mm.

In total, 28 furniture finishes in décor matt or lacquer, satin-matt or high-gloss are available including three new special finishes: matt light blue, matt concrete grey and satin-matt aubergine – as well as the linen decor finish, which rounds off the wide colour range.

DuraSquare furniture basin, XSquare console vanity unit in Concrete Grey Matt, and XSquare mirror cabinet with C.1 basin mixer

Image caption: DuraSquare furniture basin, XSquare console vanity unit in Concrete Grey Matt, and XSquare mirror cabinet with C.1 basin mixer

Choosing a console panel in one of the cabinet colours or additionally in solid Natural Walnut, permits completely new and individual colour combinations for XSquare. Two or even three colours in combination with the lacquer finish, chrome profile, and console panel give rise to new contrasts and high-class design options. Handle-free fronts with push-to-open technology subtly highlight the elegant and inspiring overall picture. The new furniture programme has a striking effect, setting clearly structured accents in the room.

Duravit offers mirrors in eight widths (450 to 1,600 mm) and mirror cabinets in four widths (600 to 1,200 mm), each designed to coordinate perfectly with the furniture. The lateral chrome profile forms the edging, continuing the design language of the furniture. The mirror surface features the new control panel: it permits contact-free control of the main light (from 35 mm-wide lighting strips on the right and left), ambilight, and mirror heating via a sensor.

Additionally mirrors have a new, convenient switching function for coloured light: at a luminosity of more than 300 lux, the light colour can be continuously adjusted from 2,700 (warm light) to 6,500 kelvin (cold light). Warm light creates a pleasant atmosphere, while cold light is best for applying makeup. The memory function ensures that the required light colour and intensity do not need to be reset when used frequently. Similarly, the functional organisation of the inside of the mirror cabinets – with storage boxes, a board for accessories and a magnetic strip for small accessories, such as scissors or tweezers – is also new.

Kaldewei is one of the leading bathroom manufacturers, producing more than 50,000 ways of designing the modern shower…

1024 724 Hamish Kilburn

Following Hotel Designs’ exclusive interview with Managing Director Martin Carroll, Duravit has opened its London flagship showroom…

Bathroom specialist Duravit has opened its new flagship showroom “Duravit London” in Clerkenwell – which is home to more creative business and architects per square mile than anywhere else in the world.

Members of the press were invited on June 20 to celebrate the pre-launch of Duravit London to learn more about the company’s a major investment and story of the brand’s sustained success within the UK market. Marking the latest chapter in the company’s 201-year history, this prestigious showroom at approx. 2,500 square feet, is situated at 36-42 Clerkenwell Road and officially opened yesterday.

inside the showroom

Visitors to the showroom will experience more than 20 Duravit series, including Duravit’s latest product innovations such as XSquare, a new furniture collection designed by Kurt Merki Jr. and the Brioso furniture series by Christian Werner. With the aim of bringing designer bathrooms to life, the London showroom will be a focal point for professionals to see first-hand the quality of Duravit’s innovative designs as well as working displays featuring the award-winning C.1 tap fitting series and the new DuraSystem® frames and SensoWash shower toilets.

To meet the demands of the growing project market and particularly specifications including Duravit, the showroom will act as a hub for ideas, inspiration and specialist technical advice, working in partnership with architects, designers and developers to ensure the correct Duravit products are specified. In addition, training and CPD seminars will form part of a continuous programme of professional development for the A&D community and retailers. The generous floor space also provides a comfortable space to meet and socialise with industry partners.

Internationally, Duravit London is ideally situated to collaborate with partners in the development of global projects, for example:

Opus Tower in Dubai by Zaha Hadid
One of Zaha Hadid’s remarkable designs is the Opus Tower in Dubai. Whereby the term “Tower“ is not strictly correct: the imaginative building complex seems like a cube that has been hollowed out in the centre. Every piece of furniture in the Opus Tower residential units were either designed or selected by her. Design by Philippe Starck and Duravit can be found in the bathrooms.

Morpheus Macau by Zaha Hadid
As one of her last works, the world-famous architect Zaha Hadid designed a unique monument. Melco Crown Entertainment’s 40-storey luxury hotel looks like an organic sculpture that looks both curiously and at the same time made for the legendary “City of Dreams” in Cotai, Macau. An icon that stands for the modern Macau and thus a new formulation of luxury.

Louvre at Abu Dhabi by Jean Nouvel
Jean Nouvel has created an architectural wonder in the desert. The architecture of the Louvre is modern but timeless, incorporating elements from Abu Dhabi’s architectural tradition. It includes designs by Duravit, thought up by Philippe Starck.

Consumers are also able to plan and discuss their requirements with a member of Duravit’s dedicated team who will be on hand to offer practical support, technical advice and specialist knowledge on choosing products for a future bathroom.

Viewings are by appointment only.

Martin Carroll

Seven minutes with the Managing Director of Duravit

1024 623 Hamish Kilburn

As Duravit opens its new Clerkenwell showroom, the editor of Hotel Designs, Hamish Kilburn, went behind the scenes to ask the Managing Director of Duravit, Martin Carroll, ‘why here’, ‘why now’ and ‘what’s next’…

Duravit has long been a leader in bathroom interior design, and the news of a swanky showroom unveiling in London’s Clerkenwell district – which is home to more creative business and architects per square mile than anywhere else in the world – the question is not ‘why’, but more ‘why now’?

Ahead of the official launch at the showroom, I went behind the brand’s polished exterior to speak with Managing Director of Duravit, Martin Carroll, to find out more about the showroom that everyone is talking about.

Hamish Kilburn: Why is Clerkenwell such an important location for you?

Martin Carroll: Duravit is a major player in innovative bathroom designs and the UK is one of the most important and best performing export markets.  Basing our London showroom in Clerkenwell will enable us to build closer relationships with the A&D community.

HK: How has the showroom been designed with the modern designer in mind?

MC: Duravit’s London showroom has been specifically designed to act as a hub for ideas, inspiration and technical advice.  It will act as a platform to showcase Duravit’s extensive product portfolio, including products by renowned designers such as: Philippe Starck, EOOS, Phoenix Design, Kurt Merki Jr. and Cecile Manz with the aim to make designer bathrooms come alive.

HK: Other than the showroom, what’s new for Duravit?

MC: Duravit is launching a number of new product collections including Brioso and XSquare, which will be on display at the new Duravit London showroom.   Duravit continues to collaborate on new international projects and recent partnerships include the Zaha Hadid – Opus Tower in Dubai and the Jean Nouvel – Louvre @ Abu Dhabi.

HK: What key bathroom trends are you seeing at the moment?

MC: The introduction of a wider range of colours and textures in bathroom furniture over recent year’s means more frequently people are now injecting their own personality into bathroom designs and being adventurous with colour schemes.   Duravit’s L-Cube furniture series for example offers 30 different surface finishes so the scope for design freedom is practically unlimited.   The new Brioso furniture range, has a total of 15 finishes which are available in various decors, real wood veneers or lacquers (matt and gloss), including new, on-trend tones such as matt light blue and matt concrete grey as well as a linen-look decor finish.

Nordic colours continue to remain popular with the trend for Scandi style living appearing in bathroom designs. Minimal design, clear shapes cool and subtle colours, overall a reduced look with a few visual highlights can make a room feel individual.  The Luv bathroom collection, designed by Cecilie Manz embraces Nordic design and offers elegant console tables in soft Nordic shades including White, Taupe, Stone Grey, Light Blue and Night Blue.

Modern bathroom featuring Duravit

HK: What are the less common pitfalls designers sometimes fall into when designing a hotel bathroom?

MC: Space is often at a premium and the smaller the space, the more ingenious your bathroom planner has to be. Look at how you can make the very best use of the space available. Duravit offers numerous products which have been developed to cater for restricted spaces, compact washbasins, WC’s and furniture solutions are imperative.  Vanity units will hide unsightly pipe work and work well in small bathrooms as they provide valuable storage for guests.  Wall-hung products will keep the floor area clear, creating the illusion of more space and light reflective surfaces help make a small area feel bigger

HK: How would you say technology is changing in the bathroom?

MC: New technology is playing an increasingly important role in bathroom design, helping to make the bathroom a more comfortable place.   Ground breaking new materials characterised by consistent sustainability in terms of materials, processing and design are increasingly available for the bathroom.

Duravit has recently developed a new innovative method, called “c-bonded technology”. In the new “c-bonded” version, the furniture washbasin is connected almost seamlessly to the L-Cube vanity unit in a complex process. Thanks to the accurate and precise-fitting connecting technology, ceramic and furniture merge to form a single unit. However, the “c-bonded” solution does not just look and feel impressive: DuraCeram®, the patented special ceramic that actually makes this precision and moulding possible, is particularly wear-resistant.

Wilton Carperts creates beautiful carpets with creations

800 793 Hamish Kilburn

Featuring the Icelandic blue of Fjord, rich ochre of Demerara, rust tone of Burnt Copper and deep grey of Gun Metal; Creations is the latest colour palette now available on all Ready to Weave carpets and four brand-new Ready to Go ranges from Wilton Carpets.

A lively colourbank that has been developed to provide depth to accommodate hotel and hospitality interiors of all kinds, Creations encompasses functional, base tones and gorgeous radiating highlights. Bringing a sense of vitality and spirit to any traditional or modern design, the palette provides complement and contrast enough to create beautiful colourways on even the most complex of patterns.

Including of-the-moment grey – in three shades from base to highlight – and a boost to the blue spectrum, Creations is responding to the traction of these calm and cool tones in commercial interiors, as Damian Roscoe, head of creative, illuminates: “Our Ready to Weave palettes are the heart of many carpets crafted by our design team, whether for our stock Ready to Go ranges or recolouring library patterns for customers; so it’s important that they deliver commercially viable colourway options. We’ve introduced Creations as our response to a move away from richer, regal bases, giving depth in blues and greys to provide a strong foundation, with a flash of ultra-popular ochre, the green of Karma and the intense icy blue of Fjord working as beautiful highlights.”

These new colours join classics such as Ruby and Lime Zest for a palette that demonstrates extraordinary flexibility. The 12-strong Creations is now available on all Ready to Weave carpets, joining the existing Optimum, Elements and Dimensions. The palette is already forming the base for the seven-row narrowloom Havana and two new eight-row broadloom ranges in Urban and Nova Scotia. Along with the soon-to-release Kinetic, these Ready to Go carpets are available for delivery in just 14-days.

Duravit launches new bathroom furniture range, Brioso

800 529 Hamish Kilburn

The Brioso bathroom furniture range is a refreshingly contemporary approach to bathroom design, offering varied individual design options and excellent value for money…

Working with designer Christian Werner, Duravit has launched a range of furniture that does justice to the notion of “Brioso” – representing relaxation, freshness, and joie de vivre in a contemporary bathroom interior.

The range’s distinctive features include precise, finely nuanced geometry produced by slender cabinet frames that form the edges of the furniture, mirrors and mirror cabinets. A further distinctive feature are handles and feet that can be supplied in the same cabinet colour if required, offering functionality without impacting on the overall design. For a more striking look, handles and even the legs can be chosen in chrome and potentially combined with real wood finishes. These varied and customised design options offer excellent value for money.

The range has presence whilst also being reserved and can be easily combined with a wide range of design series such as Vero Air, P3 Comforts, ME by Starck, Starck 3, and D-Code.

The washbasin vanity units are available in up to five different widths (400-1300 mm). This also enables practically asymmetric, half-open furniture to be created that further emphasises the fresh look of the range.

The Brioso furniture range is part of the universal console programme providing even greater design freedom. The furniture consoles are available in two different thicknesses (30 and 45 mm, each with a variable width) and two depths. They can be combined with vanity units in widths of 30 to 80 cm and console washbasin vanity units of 62 to 100 cm. All furniture comes with the option of one or two drawers. The tall cabinet and semi-tall cabinet in widths of 420 or 520 mm offer yet more storage space.

Modern bathroom featuring the new rangeThe Brioso vanity unit in White High Gloss is 420 mm wide and is small enough to fit any guest bathroom. Shown with ME by Starck handrinse basin and C.1 single lever basin mixer.

The open shelves on the 820 mm wide asymmetric vanity unit can be located left or right. To match: the washbasin from the ME by Starck series with an asymmetrically positioned tap fitting from the C.1 series. console washbasin vanity units of 62 to 100 cm. All furniture comes with the option of one or two drawers. The tall cabinet and semi-tall cabinet in widths of 420 or 520 mm offer yet more storage space.

A total of 15 finishes are available in various decors, real wood veneers or lacquers (matt and gloss), including new, on-trend tones such as matt light blue and matt concrete grey as well as a linen-look decor finish.

Floor-standing variants underline Brioso’s balanced proportions. Like the handles, the furniture feet are available in chrome or the lacquer furniture colours.

The matching mirrors and mirror cabinets have a 60 mm-wide, 300 lux-strong LED edging light at the top. Wash area lighting, dimmer function, and mirror heating have a contact-free control. The cabinet trims fitted to the sides can be ordered to match the colour of the finish and round off the fresh overall effect of the series.

In addition, Brioso sports a further design feature to appeal to the sense of touch: As a stylish solution for the wash area – the Vero Air washbasin is also available as a c-bonded version in conjunction with the Brioso vanity unit. In a complex and patented process, the furniture washbasin is connected almost seamlessly to the vanity unit.

Kaldewei NexSys opens new chapter for floor-level showers

1024 724 Hamish Kilburn

Bathroom specialist Kaldewei has just launched a revolutionary 4-in-1 system solution for easy, safe shower installation…

Launching in the UK this month, Kaldewei NexSys is a shower surface revolution. The innovative 4-in-1 system which is already pre-assembled at the factory, consists of a waste channel, sloping support, sealing and an enamelled shower surface enabling ultra simple and fast installation by professionals. NexSys takes a completely new approach to floor-level showers, perfectly combining two worlds: with one of the main advantage being it’s a seamless shower surface made of steel enamel with the design of a tiled shower area with a shower channel. The Kaldewei NexSys opens up a new market segment and rings in the change from shower channel to channel shower. This innovative product is available in eight sizes.

Narrow channel is an eye-catching feature

Only one year after the concept was introduced at ISH 2017 and after subsequent market research, Kaldewei is launching its revolutionary NexSys shower surface system on the market. The visual highlight of the elegant design is the narrow waste channel with a high-end designer cover made of brushed stainless steel that fits seamlessly into the shower surface’s overall minimalist look. Like all Kaldewei bathroom solutions, NexSys is made of superior steel enamel so it will retain its exquisite look for decades.

4-in-1 system cuts out installation steps

It’s not only in visual terms that the NexSys is revolutionising the shower market, Kaldewei is also a trail blazer when it comes to shower surfaces with regard to installation. The pre-assembled system of waste channel, sloping support, sealing tape and shower surface can, for example, be positioned directly in the screed recess after height compensation – a significant time saving for bathroom professionals. Thanks to the low built heights, floor-level installation is also possible with a limited construction depth. NexSys has no interior contour whatsoever making it ideal for insertion into the bathroom’s tile grid – like a large enamelled tile with integrated waste channel. Sound proofing is guaranteed with the use of sound insulation tape.

Kaldewei offers support every step of the way, ensuring easy planning and installation. Additional information about NexSys includes a wide range of online tools such as installation videos, its Product Configurator, an interactive planning assistant or the provision of corresponding certificates. Duravit shower + bath in a modern bathroom

Walk-in shower and bath sets high standards of comfort in small bathrooms

800 700 Hamish Kilburn

Bathroom specialist Duravit has launched a sleek shower and bath that unites contemporary bathroom design with the optimum use of space…

Shower + Bath, designed by EOOS, is a two-in-one walk-in shower and bathtub. The integrated glass door easily transforms the bathtub into an accessible open shower. If the door is opened towards the inside of the bathtub, it disappears under a waterproof cushion and remains invisible.

Precise lines are characteristic of the design language of Shower + Bath. The rectangular basic form and steep sloping sides ensure plenty of room to move when showering. The shower is surrounded by a generous glass enclosure, which can be selected in optional mirrored glass. This variant introduces an additional element of visual spaciousness into small bathrooms. Users can also comfortably sit on the cushion when showering, since it can be moved along the entire length of the bathtub.

The new shower and bathtub combination from Duravit unites several functions in one – as a shower, high quality bathtub, seat and shelf.
bathrooms.

Side shot of the Shower + Bath in a modern bathroom

The firm cushion is positioned on the integrated door and the edge of the bathtub, offering a comfortable seat and additional shelf space. The cushion also serves an additional function when relaxing in the bathtub; it can be used as an adjustable backrest or shelf.

With the door closed, the tub can be used as a relaxing bath in which to soak or as a foot bath. During bathing, a safety lock guarantees that the ESG-glass door cannot be accidentally opened.

The functional versatility of Shower + Bath is supported by its manufactured precision. The DuraSolid A material allows for sleek, refined edges in the design. The bathtub body, plinth and paneling are all made from the solid material. Compact external dimensions of 170 x 75 cm enable space-efficient installation options and ensure that this new solution can replace a conventional bathtub, even during bathroom renovations.

800 620 Hamish Kilburn

The bathroom should be comfortable, relaxing, and stylish, particularly as it is estimated we spend around three years of our lives in this room.

To make the bathroom as aesthetically appealing as possible, functional components are often invisible. The innovative technology concealed within the assembly units of toilets and washbasins is essential in ensuring the perfect interaction with products installed in front of the wall.

With DuraSystem®, Duravit offers convenient additional features for the bathroom. The new DuraSystem® is available for the toilet, urinal, washbasin, and bidet. In front of the wall, the sophisticated system uses actuator plates that are appealing to both the sense of sight and touch. Behind the wall, it guarantees a simple and perfect installation and solves many technical challenges. Whether for a new build, or a conversion, dry or wet installation, DuraSystem® is suitable for any installation type.

The actuator plates come in an electronic and mechanical version. Both feature the clear geometry that characterizes the stylish design of Duravit products.

Toilet featuring the DuraSystem

The electronic A2 toilet actuator plates, made from white glass, are surface-mounted. Their contemporary, timeless design enriches the bathroom and increases its users’ comfort. An infrared approaching sensor activates the illumination of the symbols when they detect movement close by. The remote control supplied enables the many convenient functions to be set and adjusted as required: integrated hygienic flush, auto flush, nightlight, cleaning function, emergency power supply, and the particularly quiet and effective odour extraction as an extra feature.

Brintons and Timorous Beasties to launch Craigend Collection at Clerkenwell Design Week

800 755 Hamish Kilburn

Carpet manufacturer Brintons will launch the new Craigend Collection designed by long-term collaborators Timorous Beasties at Clerkenwell Design Week 2018. Taking over St Johns Square the collection will be debuted in a pop-up installation designed by Studio Shaw Architects.

Famous for their outstanding diversity of pattern, Scottish design duo Timorous Beasties will present Craigend, their third collection with Brintons. Named after Craigend Place, home of the Glasgow based Timorous Beasties studio and birth place of the designs, the collection name is also inspired by the old Gaelic word ‘Creag’, which means rock.

Render of the Brintons and Timorous Beasties installation designed by Studio Shaw Architects at Clerkenwell Design Week 2018 to launch the Craigend Collection

This commercial collection is inspired by textures and surfaces found naturally underfoot, including sand dunes, stone moss and lichen, all reimagined in the Brintons’ signature 80/20 blend of 80 per cent wool and 20 per cent nylon. With Craigend, Timorous Beasties have called upon their fascination with the oftenbrutal beauty of the natural world, as well as taking aesthetic inspiration from different crafting materials including paint, ink and fabric.

Emma Cassidy, Head of Creative Design EMEA at Brintons commented: “Brintons are delighted to launch the highly anticipated Craigend Collection, our latest collaboration with Timorous Beasties which celebrates our 10-year anniversary of collaborating together. The collection brings to life a diverse range of bold, colourful and dynamic designs that will inspire and surprise the design community; pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in carpet design, for commercial spaces.”

Above from left: Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons, Timorous Beasties in the Glasgow studio

The installation will showcase a unique selection of woven carpets taken from the new Craigend Collection. Visitors will be taken on a journey through the pop-up installation, where the full-scale patterns will transport the audience into a world inspired by the textures and sights of the natural world.

Founders of Timorous Beasties Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons comment, “For our new Craigend collection, we took inspiration from what we see under our feet, taking cues from natural carpets such as sand dunes, moss, stone, and waves of water. We also thought about how carpet can be dramatic in transitional spaces such as lobbies, corridors, and grand dining rooms. We also considered how the functional aspects and minimal aesthetic can work in more personal spaces such as bedrooms, whilst still keeping the link between the dramatic and the serene. We first collaborated with Brintons a decade ago, and our love of pattern repeats from our wallpapers and fabrics, has been a very productive pairing, and adapts perfectly to carpet design.

Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons will be taking part in the Conversations at Clerkenwell talks programme and will be in conversation with Priya Khanchandani, deputy editor of ICON Magazine on Tuesday 22 May, 10.30am. Book your place here.

Brintons designed bespoke carpets for Hyatt Regency Paris Charles de Gaulle

700 476 Hamish Kilburn

Leading carpeting manufacturer Brintons has manufactured quirky bespoke carpets for the Hyatt Regency Paris Charles de Gaulle’s flexible working and meeting space, Le Campus.

The carpeting manufacturer worked in conjunction with design company Virserius Studio and general construction company, Vöcker Hospitality on the renovation, following the design brief to evoke nostalgia for university, to inspire creative thinking and enhance the exchange of ideas.

This direction led Virserius Studio to take inspiration from the structure of molecules, using the hotel’s bright colour palettes as stimulus for the bespoke designs.

“We manufactured Brintons bespoke axminster carpets using strong, really vibrant colours to stand out against the grey background,” said Mahlmann. “The pattern is made up of cubes of different sizes, and appears to fade from dark to light. The placement of the pattern is designed to draw you in as you approach a room, and as you enter reveals itself as an artwork on the floor. The carpets add a lot of value to the overall feel of the finished spaces.”

Brintons

Brintons manufactured approximately 700sqm of carpets for the renovation of the hotel. The pattern colour scheme is purposefully different in each room and the vibrant colours were chosen deliberately to match the rest of the interior design elements, from curtains to wall paint.

Kaldewei joins WWF’s Southeast Asia marine conservation programme

1024 683 Katy Phillips

Project to reduce plastic waste through sustainable waste management.

Bathrooms specialist Kaldewei has joined forces with the WWF’s marine conservation programme in Southeast Asia, with the aim of improving waste management in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

Announcing the drive, the company cited forecasts that by 2050 the oceans will contain as much plastic waste as fish. The first indications are already visible today: animals are perishing after ingesting plastic; microplastic is being found in many species of fish.

Furthermore, studies show that organised waste management is not practised in Southeast Asia and uncontrolled dumping of residual waste is a common occurrence. Owing to regular flooding in river basins, large quantities of this waste is swept into the oceans.

“Sustainability is enshrined in the Kaldewei corporate philosophy,” said Kaldewei Managing Director Franz Kaldewei. “We are happy to support the WWF’s important work to prevent plastic waste in the oceans, and we are confident that with our commitment we will be making a valuable contribution to marine conservation and the preservation of natural living environments.”

Keeping plastic out of the oceans

Working together, Kaldewei and the WWF are aiming to combat not only the impacts, but also the causes of environmental pollution. The aim of the project in the Mekong Delta is to quickly reduce the volume of waste by up to 80 per cent by means of separation and recycling, to shut down dumps over the long term and to clear disposal sites.

The partners hope that these measures will prevent large quantities of plastic from entering the ocean via the rivers and canals on the Mekong Delta every year, as is currently the case.

In manufacturing its shower surfaces, bathtubs and washbasins made of steel enamel – a composite of steel and glass – Kaldewei says it has always used natural raw materials that are 100% recyclable.

“For us, this partnership with the WWF is a logical step in our constant endeavours for a clean environment,” Kaldewei added.

New curtians and upholstery ranges aimed at the hospitality, leisure and marine markets.

Sekers has taken the wraps off its new Shogun upholstery and Suomi FR blackouts collections.

Described as a semi-plain textured design, Shogun is available in 18 multi-colour shades including what the company calls sophisticated neutrals and porcelain blues.

Incorporating FibreGuard, an advanced finish that Sekers says helps protect the fabric against spills and stains without having to resort to specialist cleaning, Shogun has been designed to be resistant to stains such as red wine and ballpoint pen.

Sekers says Shogun is perfect for the most demanding upholstery application and, as such, the ideal for the commercial hospitality, leisure and marine markets – it’s supplied with a crib 5 flame retardant backing and a Martindale abrasion performance of 60,000 rubs.

Suomi, meanwhile, is a new collection of FR blackouts in three designs, suitable for contract curtains and available in a palette of shades ranging from cool metallic tones and sophisticated neutrals and soft blues and teals.

With a refined drape and subtle shimmer, Sekers says Suomi is an ideal choice for designers specifying for the hospitality, leisure and marine markets.

Woven in 100% polyester with a 3 pass FR black out backing, Sekers says the Suomi collection is suitable for all aspects of the contract market, from hotels to cruise ships, meeting all relevant UK, US & IMO standards for curtains.

SPA SPOTLIGHT: Opinion – Make a statement with your luxury hotel bathrooms

As part of Hotel Design’s spotlight this month on spa products and services, Michael Gray, GROHE UK Product Manager, investigates the design possibilities offered to hotels by the latest shower, lighting, music and faucet technologies for bathrooms…

Luxury hotel bathrooms are designed to make a statement, using products that encourage wellbeing and promote a space of relaxation.

As a result, there is a huge array of wellness products now available for the hotel and hospitality industry, including showers with mood lighting, steam functions and music controlled by Bluetooth.

Oversized statement showerheads are also available, alongside products that offer a range of spray patterns designed to suit the user’s needs, with side shower sprays offering the opportunity for a massaging showering experience.

Solutions for all budgets

For smaller budgets, showering products are available that offer multiple spray patterns from an intense jet to a relaxing massage spray. This adds a simple but indulgent addition to your showering experience, offering you the choice to tailor the water flow to suit your mood.

Hotel bathrooms should offer the ultimate sanctuary in which to unwind at the end of the day.  Features like showers with multiple spray patterns and massaging function to statement taps designed to catch the eye will always impress clients.

Smart technology can also be considered for hotel bathrooms, particularly as more guests look to have a staycation to unwind and relax. Many smart products are now available in the bathroom from high tech toilets, to spa-inspired showers that help to create a relaxing bathroom sanctuary at the end of a busy day sightseeing or shopping.

Already a well-known feature in commercial washrooms, touchless taps are now gaining popularity in hotel bathrooms due to their unique combination of comfort and hygiene and convenient hands-free activation. Through the touchless sensor activated control, the taps minimise the spread of bacteria to contribute to a healthy bathroom. This also helps to keep the tap sparkling clean for longer, reducing maintenance and maximising product life. They also often come with a timer which automatically stops the water flow after a desired length of time to reduce wastage.

Stylish and hygienic

Shower toilets are the norm in Asia and now there is an increasing demand for these hygienic toilet systems in Europe, in both hotels and homes. Shower toilets feature an integrated bidet system and are designed to harness the gentle and effective cleansing benefits of water to help deliver optimum hygiene levels in the bathroom, and often come with a host of advanced features. Thanks to the gentle and natural cleansing process, the need for toilet paper is eliminated, thus the systems offer excellent eco-credentials.

Certain shower toilets offer smart technology, including extensive options that allow users to create a personalised cleansing routine, including adjusting the water pressure and position of the spray arm, to the preferred temperature, spray pattern and cleansing cycle.

The individual settings can be controlled intuitively using either the remote control or via an app which allows users to store all their favourite settings on a digital device. Some brands have also taken into consideration common annoyances for users, such as having to go to the toilet at night, and have combatted this by designing toilets with LED lighting.
