Sleep 2016: Gensler wins competition for new hotel room concept

Sleep 2016: Gensler wins competition for new hotel room concept

    999 687 Daniel Fountain

International architecture, design and planning firm Gensler has won the annual Sleep Set competition to design a new guest room concept for the future at Sleep 2016 – the annual hotel design event.

Designed to fulfil the demands of a new demographic of hotel guest – termed as the Digital Avant-Garde by research association Sinus-Institut, the vision explores how the space will be occupied, anticipating and exceeding the needs of its inhabitants, while shifting the focus away from the space and even its design.

The Digital Avant-Garde are demarcated by a set of shared values that have superseded traditional socio-demographic features and social class. As globalised, non-conformist travellers in constant search of new, enriching encounters, cultural engagement, knowledge and inspiration; the Digital Avant-Gardes are creative expeditionists.

Sleep 2016: Gensler wins competition for new hotel room concept

As an experience-driven tribe, Gensler has designed a guest-room and communal areas for a community focused hotel, in a hypothetical south-east London location. Underpinned by the fundamental tenets of socialisation and an authentic immersion into the local culture that encourages creativity and craftsmanship, the concept is divided into five overlapping spaces.

The primary concept centres around a ‘social core’ – an ever-changing, dynamic space that reimagines shared areas such as hotel lobbies, lounges and bars. Inviting the vibrant cultural capital from outside the hotel in, the space reinvigorates the communal areas and signifies a departure from the isolation often perpetuated in hotels, acting as core infrastructure that fosters the socio-cultural exchange of ideas, skills and experiences between guests and locals.

Operating around a high bench, the social core has the capacity to transform into a sturdy, resilient work space for local creatives and artists; a workshop in which to learn new skills and share inspiration, and a communal kitchen through integrated induction heating within the tile top. The communal kitchen encourages guests to cook with local produce from nearby street markets, share a meal and recipes, as well as a flexibility that allows the space to become a lounge or bar depending on need. It is a space for exchange.

Sleep 2016: Gensler wins competition for new hotel room concept

Within the guestroom, Gensler has continued the theme of flexibility. The bedroom space is adaptable; in one iteration, two single bed frames can be joined together to create a double bed for sleeping; as a second alternative, the two beds can be separated to create twin beds or one single bed; thirdly, the two frames can be stacked on top of each other to create a sofa for socialising or working. In all arrangements, guests can adjust the space to satisfy their living styles, reflecting a desire amongst guests to participate in their changing environment.

Crucially, Gensler has jettisoned the inclusion of a TV screen in the guest-room, instead installing sockets and charge points to ensure guests can access the personal technology that they carry with them.

Sleep 2016: Gensler wins competition for new hotel room concept

Catering to the Digital Avant-Garde’s preference for ethically sourced produce and products, Gensler has incorporated Salvatori Lithoverde tiles in the bathroom – the world’s first recycled stone texture made from 99% of stone offcuts, as well as felt for the walls and ceiling of the bedroom, that is made from sliced BuzziSpace panels, upcycled to make a new material. Independent designers also feature throughout the specification to promote craftsmanship and entrepreneurship in London, evident in the moulded leather stools by Tortie Hoare, organic amplifiers by Camilla Lee, timber crafted side-tables by Dunia Tigris, glass-blown vessels by Pia Wustenberg and Surface Tiles & Condiment Set by Jennifer Gray.

Claire Richmond, senior associate at Gensler, comments: “As the preeminent hotel design competition, Sleep Set is a fantastic accolade for Gensler.

“Designing for the Digital Avant-Garde, or as we term it, the Expeditionist, provided the opportunity to consider how to ‘socialise’ the hotel experience. Our analysis indicated that our tribe is often averse to staying in luxury hotels because, while they have a level of disposable income, they aren’t able to impact their environment and engage with local cultures as successfully within a five-star, service-driven hotel.

Sleep 2016: Gensler wins competition for new hotel room concept

“Our concept is a re-imagination of the traditional hotel lobby, lounge and bar. These spaces are transformed into a platform for the community itself; for local illustrators, weavers, potters, joiners, jewellers, makers, leather workers, writers, graphic designers and numerous other creatives. Therefore, it is essential that this is based in a creative part of a city. This is not a static environment. By sharing ideas, experimenting and working together, the hotel will develop with the community.

“Our tribe forages for compelling experiences and rich encounters, so we have created a setting that actively encourages the collision of guests, locals, skills, crafts and ideas. We want the guests, staff and community to feel encouraged and empowered so they can learn from each other, to learn from the cities they visit and live in; to absorb the energy they exude.”

    Geberit - Sleep 2016

Sleep 2016: Geberit impresses with AquaClean Mera

    1000 563 Daniel Fountain

With shower toilets raising comfort levels in the hotel bathroom to spa-like proportions, Geberit showcased its very latest and market-leading technology at Sleep 2016. A highlight of the stand was the Geberit AquaClean Mera, which impressed not only with its aesthetic appeal, but also due to its array of intelligent comfort functions.

Characterised by high-quality materials, smooth lines and a seamless finish, this latest shower toilet from Geberit, designed by Christoph Behling, has the appearance of a standard WC on the outside, while a wealth of technological benefits are neatly concealed within.

The washing and drying functions are just part of the Geberit AquaClean Mera story, which also boasts functions including a proximity sensor to automatically raise the WC lid and warm the seat on the user’s approach, rimless WC pan for improved hygiene, a discreet orientation light for use at night, built-in odour extraction and a programmable remote control.

Visitors to Sleep 2016 also learned more about Geberit AquaClean Sela, available as either floor-standing or wall-hung it offers hotel guests a luxurious level of cleanliness, at the touch of a button.

Specifiers looking to upgrade hotel bathrooms retrospectively will find a neat solution with Geberit AquaClean enhancement seats, which can be added to an existing WC to wash the user clean with a gentle and airy water spray at body temperature.

Wilton Carpets showcasing Signature Collection at IHS

Wilton underlines design focus with Signature Collection at IHS

    999 580 Daniel Fountain

Previewing at the Independent Hotel Show, Signature is the latest addition to Wilton Carpets’ growing portfolio of striking tufted carpets.

Available in eight on-trend colour combinations, the contemporary design is headlining at the Olympia event, and once again underlined Wilton’s ability to match looks and performance in its carpet creations.

The new Signature Collection uses a modern colour palette to produce a prominent linear design that is ideal for hotel and hospitality spaces looking to add a contemporary twist. From bright pinks on a neutral backdrop and mustard yellow in combination with blue, to variations on the monotone theme, Signature is set to be a major hit among designers and hotel owners alike.

Falling within Wilton’s tufted stock portfolio so available for immediate delivery, Signature is made from durable 80% wool and 20% nylon to ensure lasting good looks, is rated suitable for heavy contract use and arrives in a four-metre width.

“Our prime reason for exhibiting at events such as the Independent Hotel Show is to demonstrate to visiting interior designers and hotel owners how Wilton Carpets can deliver a carpet solution for any environment,” comments Andrea Evans, Marketing Manager, Wilton Carpets.

“We already enjoy an enviable reputation for our woven axminster capabilities, but shows such as IHS allow us to display our growing portfolio of tufted lines. The success of other recent additions, including Harris Tweed, has opened up new doors for the company and following initial reactions we fully expect Signature to be equally as popular.”

Luxury fabric specialist Kobe UK is celebrating its most successful Decorex yet. The company, which first exhibited at the event in 2008, showcased visitors its stunning new collections.

David Harris, MD of Kobe UK said: “This was a fantastic show for us. It was a great opportunity to meet new customers and the ideal platform for us to promote our new collections.”

Debuting at Decorex was Kobe’s Elegance, inspired by Art Deco, reflecting the lavish glamour reminiscent of this period. Also for the first time the company showed a new compact range of ‘room highs’, the extra wide fabrics for window décor.

The fabric is more than 300cm high with the pattern printed or woven horizontally across, making matching patterns and sewing seams a thing of the past. The sophisticated, luxurious easy-to-care-for, washable fabrics come in a pale tte of neutral pastels and rich deep tones.

Kobe has a range of collections featuring room high fabrics as well as the standard widths. Both City Chic and Aurora offer the very latest trends in room-highs.

Said David: “Listening to our customers is our number one priority and the feedback we got about the collections was fantastic. We will certainly be back again next year!”

Laufen Bathrooms to show at TENT London Design Fair

Laufen Bathrooms exhibits at TENT during London Design Festival

    901 535 Daniel Fountain

The material revolution continues with new experimental projects designed by students at HGK, the Academy of Art and Design Basel/Switzerland, utilising the material capabilities of SaphirKeramik, to be presented inside the Swiss country pavilion at TENT in collaboration with Design Prize Switzerland and Laufen Bathrooms.

For the 10th edition of the London Design Fair, 22 to 25 September 2016, Laufen Bathrooms will be on hand at TENT, Truman Brewery with a special area in collaboration with Design Prize Switzerland, the competition whose goal is to encourage exchange, mediation and promotion of Swiss design.

This area will host a selection of winning projects in the SaphirKeramik contest – a competition involving students from the Academy of Art and Design (Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst) HGK of Basel, who were asked to explore the limits and potential of SaphirKeramik through the creation of innovative objects for the bath using the award winning material developed by Laufen. An expert jury, which included the renowned designers Konstantin Grcic and Toan Nguyen, honoured the best designs.

Besides the results of this stimulating competition, the space will feature several products in SaphirKeramik from the VAL collection designed by Konstantin Grcic, which demonstrate Laufen’s ability to also produce items with this material on an industrial scale.

The incessant research continues on SaphirKeramik, the revolutionary material launched by Laufen in 2013, which thanks to the corundum additive in its formula makes it possible to produce ceramics in smaller thicknesses with very strong walls, leading to slimmer lines, a true breakthrough for the world of bathroom ceramics. Started in-house with a long development phase and then pursued in collaboration with renowned designers, this research has now been opened up to students as well, with their ability to bring a different, stimulating approach – fresh, creative ideas, free of the influences generated by years of professional experience.

Experimentation has always been one of the strong points of Laufen Bathrooms, which once again demonstrates its role of leadership in terms of innovation and design, working not only with internationally acclaimed designers but also with talented young creatives.

Discover the roots of design: What not to miss at Decorex 2016

    1024 546 Daniel Fountain

With Decorex just a few days away, the excitement for this year’s event is building. Here’s a preview of just some of what attendees can expect…

The Heritage of Chair Making: A spectacular entrance embracing this year’s theme, the roots of design, curated by renowned British Furniture Designer Tim Gosling. Working with the historic collections from the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Frederick Parker Collection, the exhibition will document the links between interior design, architecture and the exceptional heritage of British craftsmanship throughout the ages. Tim has asked 12 leading British visual creators: Jasper Conran, Michael Craig-Martin, James Dyson, Tim Gosling, Anya Hindmarch, Roger Jones, Robert Kime, Jo Malone, Philip Mould, Sir Paul Smith, William Yeoward, and Andrew Winch, to choose their favourite piece and why it speaks to them.

Crafthouse: A series of interactive roomsets presented by The New Craftsmen, which explores the fundamental characteristics of what makes a home by studying the domestic rituals by which we live. Building upon the strong anthology of British makers, materials and skills, ‘Crafthouse’ will look to reconsider and question craft and how it is used in our lives, with makers taking up residency in each roomset, contextualizing them within a familiar environment and pushing them to the limits of their skills. The New Craftsmen will be hosting daily tours at 2pm.

This showcase of new materials and techniques is curated by renowned design and applied arts critic, Corinne Julius, with a select group of 14 makers presenting new work exclusively for this year’s Decorex.
The works can be commissioned by interior designers and architects for use in their projects, such as lighting, flooring, and sound absorbent, fire resistant textiles.

Talks Programme: An interesting and diverse series of talks in the Seminar Theatre, in association with LuxDeco, offering debates and an insightful exploration around industry relevant topics, hosted by some of the leading names in the design world, including Ben Pentreath, Christine Van Der Hurd, Nina

Hotel Designs in media partnership with Decorex International

    821 452 Daniel Fountain

Hotel Designs is delighted to announce its media partnership for this year’s edition of Decorex International, being held at Syon Park, London on 18-21 September.

As Hotel Designs looks to further establish its name within the design and interiors industry, partnering with shows of the calibre of Decorex is the perfect way to reach key influencers and figures from across the industry.

Decorex International, the UK’s longest running design show and only one of its kind for the luxury interiors market, has been drawing the biggest names from design and interiors for almost 40 years.

Daniel Fountain, Hotel Designs editor, said of the partnership: “Having attended the Decorex show before, I am delighted we can have a presence at one of most well-known shows in the sector.

“Its reputation for being the place to discover the very latest trends and products places it at the top of most design professionals’ lists of must-attend-shows. I am excited Hotel Designs can be part of Decorex’s evolving and ever-increasing reputation,” he added.

    Decorex and London Design Fair

Decorex partners with London Design Fair

    512 306 Daniel Fountain

Decorex International, the UK’s longest running design show and only one of its kind for the luxury interiors market, announces that it will partner with the London Design Fair, the umbrella brand for Tent London and Super Brands London, for the 2016 London Design Festival.

This collaboration between two complementary shows will see both present their exhibition consecutively, with Decorex open between 18 and 21 September and the London Design Fair from 22 to 25 September. A pass for either show will be valid at both, which means that visitors will be able to access two major destinations of the London Design Festival for virtually the entire festival.

In addition, the partnership will be promoted on social media, with both shows picking their highlights from each event. A dedicated entrance at the London Design Fair will greet visitors coming from Decorex to ensure a swift entry.

While both shows champion a different aspect of the design community, by joining forces Decorex and the London Design Fair are offering visitors a broader perspective on design. Through this enhanced experience, they are encouraging them to engage in an even wider discussion on the emerging trends and topics facing the industry today. Drawing on the synergies between the two, retail buyers, specifiers, architects, interior designers and design devotees can consider the many diverse facets of a range of contemporary interiors.

Simone du Bois, Brand Director for Decorex comments: “Given the sheer number and breadth of events to navigate during the London Design Festival, it can be overwhelming for design professionals with more focused time constraints. By partnering with the London Design Fair, we feel it offers a unique opportunity for our shared audience to experience some of the best British and International brands alongside fresh, new emerging talent. Highlights will include design collaborations from country pavilions to exciting new processes and technologies and the kudos of established brands.

For visitors, it offers excellent value for money and a curated experience to the very best London has to offer in terms of design.”

Jimmy MacDonald, the Founder & Director of the London Design Fair, says: “As the margins between design ad craft, retail and online, contract and end-user diminish; one show on its own will struggle to complete the visitor experience. Two shows might just deliver – actually we are very sure they will!”

The New Craftsmen joins up with Decorex

New Craftsmen to present installation at Decorex

    1000 319 Daniel Fountain

Taking over four substantial spaces at this year’s Decorex, The New Craftsmen will be presenting ‘CraftHouse’, a series of interactive roomsets exploring the fundamental characteristics of what makes a home by studying the domestic rituals by which we live.

Building upon the strong anthology of British makers, materials and skills, ‘CraftHouse’ will look to reconsider and question craft and how it is used in our lives, with makers taking up residency in each room-set, contextualising them within a familiar environment and pushing them to the limits of their skills.

Recognised as a champion of contemporary British craft, Decorex is committed to providing a platform for individual craft makers/studios as it continues to meet the evolving needs of designers and specifiers working at the top end of the market. Some of the most noteworthy projects include an element of craft and interior designers are constantly drawing on this sector to commission truly bespoke work for its clients.

    Room 1: Eating
Nic Webb will highlight the processes and versatility of making with clay, with the space showcasing a selection of his collectible clay vessels and functional pieces for eating and serving food, while also featuring large sculptural furniture pieces rendered in scorched wood.

The New Craftsmen joins up with Decorex

    Room 2: Bathing
Makers Malgorzata Bany and Jochen Holz will consider the bathing space, working in both Jesmonite and glass. Malgorzata will present a new textural range of tiles in Jesmonite and will also experiment with pigment and form to create new furniture including a console table. While Jochen will explore the possibilities of laboratory glass, showing a new lighting feature with neon gas and water pouring vessels.

The New Craftsmen joins up with Decorex

    Room 3: Sleeping
Combining both Pedro da Costa Felgueiras and Georgia Kemball’s passion and knowledge of historic interiors and textiles, the space will display a strong use of rich colour, texture and pattern. Pedro’s lacquers and embellishments will be crafted from hand-ground pigments and minerals, while he will also be bringing to the fore the ancient craft of lead applications. Georgia’s textiles will build upon her debut collection for The New Craftsmen, including hand-made pieces as well as launching an exclusive fabric by the metre range, in collaboration with Bristol Weaving Mill.

The New Craftsmen joins up with Decorex

    Room 4: Working
Serving as the studio for Crafthouse’s architect, the working area represents the hub from which all the other spaces were conceived. The studio will be encased in willow paneling hand-crafted by Hilary Burns, and braided handles by Aimee Betts, while furniture designer Gareth Neal has collaborated with basket-maker Annemarie O’Sullivan to present the third iteration of his line of chairs exclusive to The New Craftsmen.

The New Craftsmen worked with architect William Smalley to create a model of the founders’ retreat which will be on display in the workspace.

“This ambitious project – The New Craftsmen’s largest presentation to date – is all about unleashing the creativity of makers and giving them an opportunity to showcase their material fascination in a holistic environment. GROHE's guest blog - round-up Milan Design Week

Guest Blog: GROHE review Milan Design Week

    750 375 Guest Blog

GROHE shares its thoughts on the Milan Salone Del Mobile extravaganza and some of the trends we can expect to see shaping interior design in the year ahead…

The biggest event of the design year, Milan’s Salone Del Mobile festival saw the city once again taken over by the interiors industry. The streets were packed with the biggest names in furniture and architecture, exhibiting alongside up-and-coming names that are new on the scene.

Our own in-house design team were out scouring the studios and showrooms for the hottest trends on show, dissecting the wealth of ideas to select six key trends that we are confident will be driving the look of our interiors over the next 18 months and beyond. These diverse trends will be filtering through many aspects of interior design, with the overall drive being towards a warmer, tactile and soothing look and feel for our homes.

    NUDE TONES
Soft, subtle colours – ones that are easy on the eye and the psyche – were in evidence everywhere, suggesting a desire for soothing interior elements as an escape from stressful lives. The core colour was a skin-tone pink (as seen above), evoking the sense of touch and inviting an emotional connection. We saw this combined with organic, unbleached wood and tactile brass and copper.

    GROHE MarbleMARBLE
Once considered a rather retro, ostentatious material, marble continues its comeback as the luxury accent of choice. This year we saw marble used on everything from chairs to bookcases, with warmer, mottled versions more popular than harsh white. Marble was combined with slick materials like plastic as well as organic, sensual wood and metal, again with warm colour tones to the fore.

    METAL FINISHESGROHE Metal
Once seen as cold, hard and industrial, metal finishes in warm tones continued to provide an air of luxury and light to many pieces shown this year. Copper, brass and bronze featured in numerous designs across all design disciplines, but the rose gold was the finish of choice, adding glamour when combined with materials like exotic wood, leather and velvet. Star of the show was Knoll’s iconic Platner arm chair, created in 18 karat gold and blue velvet to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

    GROHE WoodORGANIC WOOD
Technology and tradition collided to present new ways of working with wood. Modern production and processing techniques have created an explosion in fluid, sensual forms for wood furniture, where curved lines and surfaces both highlight the natural grain of the wood and also invite the user to make physical contact with this enduring material – enhanced by the combining of wood with other tactile materials like leather and moulded plastic.

    Brintons at the JFS

Brintons supporting the ‘future of design’ at JFS

    1000 576 Daniel Fountain

Brintons Carpets collaborated with Birmingham City University at this year’s prestigious January Furniture Show.

Attended by over 16,000 buyers and 4,000 exhibitors, the four-day show at Birmingham’s NEC arena depicts the latest interior and furniture trends for the coming year.

BA Textile Design students from Birmingham City University used Brintons’ latest technologies to create two carpet designs, depicting how key interiors trends can be transformed into physical products and designs. The students showcased their latest work at the show as part of their final year trend project.

Currently in its eighth year, the project encourages students to create a range of designs inspired by industry trends. The project focuses upon the power of collaboration within different disciplines, joining science, technology, design and art together with renowned brands such as Brintons.

    Brintons at JFS
Charmaine Stint, Programme Manager for the Institute for Creative Innovation at Birmingham City University, said: “Challenging our students, staff and partners to come up with brand new concepts which are fresh, engaging and new, generates some truly innovative content. It’s this innovation which drives us and our partners to push the boundaries and is one of the most motivating elements of this showcase.”

As part of the project, each year students unravel two future trends, creating a portolio of moodboards and a final project. Influenced by Colourhive’s Autumn / Winter 2016/17 forecasts, this year’s project was inspired by two trends: ‘Strata’ and ‘Play.’

Inspired by the Natural World and its significance with the everyday, ‘Strata’ focuses upon the importance of geology and the unrefined beauty of the earth. Student Rosie Williams’ monochrome room set simultaneously explores human influence on nature. Student Chloe Baker’s ‘Play’ vibrant room set focuses upon the creativity and optimism possessed by our inner child.

    Brintons at JFS

Charmaine continued, “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to work with Brintons, through using its revolutionary 32 colour High Definition looms, allowing us to showcase our students new thinking and impressive designs.

Brintons worked in partnership with the University and the students to help support their design development and creative potential.

Sarah Draper, Commercial Marketing Manager for Brintons, said: “At Brintons industry trends constantly shape our designs and collections, so we were extremely excited about the opportunity to collaborate with the students at Birmingham City University.

“The future of design lies with upcoming students and being able to help them achieve their vision is a fantastic process.”
