Dominvs Group granted planning consent for Hotel in St Paul’s, London

Dominvs Group has been granted planning consent from the City of London Corporation for an 82,500-sq-ft hotel on Ludgate Hill located in close proximity to St Paul’s Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Dominvs will develop and operate the hotel under a yet to be announced brand. The luxury hotel will offer guest bedrooms across six floors, with some offering uninterrupted views of St. Paul’s Cathedral. There will be a restaurant and spa, both of which will welcome hotel guests as well as local visitors and residents to enjoy a meal or treatment. Consent also includes the retention of an existing retail unit on the ground floor.

The scheme lies in the St Paul’s Cathedral conservation area and has been designed to a BREEAM Excellent level, representing the highest possible environmental and sustainability standards. The façade of Creed Court will be retained and existing buildings on the site will be demolished, followed by the construction of a new part-five and part-seven storey building with three basement levels.

In recommending the scheme for approval, Planning Officers stated that the proposed building would “preserve the character and appearance of the St Paul’s conservation area” and that the design would “minimise the potential impact on nearby residential occupiers in relation to privacy, overlooking, noise, daylight and sunlight”.

This will be Dominvs’ second development in the capital, with work already underway on the conversion of the former Tower Bridge Magistrates Court into a luxury 200-bedroom hotel. The hotel will be in partnership with Marriott and part of the Autograph Collection. A further hotel development is planned for London on a site Dominvs acquired last year on Old Marylebone Road, Westminster.

Minor Hotels, Nakheel join for new-build AVANI in Dubai

Minor Hotels, currently with a portfolio of 156 hotels and resorts in 24 countries across Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, South America, Africa and the Indian Ocean, has signed a management agreement with UAE master developer Nakheel for a new AVANI hotel in Dubai.

The 372-key AVANI Ibn Battuta Dubai Hotel will be developed by Nakheel and will be located adjacent to the recently-opened Ibn Battuta Metro Link, which is directly connected to Ibn Battuta Mall. The new-build 18-storey hotel will feature a pool, a spa, a gym, an all-day dining restaurant, a coffee shop and car parking.

Melia Hotels International, Calviá City Hall and the Balearic Government has begun construction of a new hotel and shopping mall in Magaluf, Mallorca, which marks the next phase in the repositioning of the destination.

Leading Spanish Hotel Group, MHI is supporting the venture by investing the largest private investment of €45 million (£37.8 million) and will oversee the creation of a new central social hub. It will further contribute towards the area’s international positioning and enhance the profitability and sustainability of Magaluf’s tourism industry.

Set for completion in 2018, the complex will include a modern hotel, underground parking space for 200 cars and more than 5,000m² of retail, food & beverage outlets and terraces, which will be located parallel to Magaluf’s beachfront. It will offer professionals and families holidaying in Magaluf and wider Mallorca, as well as residents, the opportunity to enjoy a variety of new quality international high-street retailers and F&B outlets to encourage visitors to spend longer in the destination.

Following a public-private sector cooperation agreement, the Calvia Beach regeneration project was launched in 2012. As part of the initiative, Melia Hotels International has renovated all hotels in the area, totalling more than 3,500 rooms, through the introduction of new brands and experiences. MHI’s achievements have received international recognition, as well as generating the best results for Magaluf in the Company’s history.

MHI’s new four-star hotel will be the only new-build property to be added to the Company’s Magaluf portfolio. Situated next to Magaluf’s promenade, the hotel will provide state-of-the-art facilities, more than 270 rooms, rooftop and upper terrace hanging pools with views over the Mediterranean, plus a restaurant at street level open to both guests, tourists and locals.

The Calvia Beach project is a strategic scheme for the Company as the conversion of its hotels have allowed MHI to improve business results, as well as having a positive impact on the image of the destination, the revival of visitor facilities and the creation of new jobs. The hotel launch is expected to create 200 jobs and will boost local consumption of existing or new leisure amenities.

Royal opening for Europe’s first Park Regis Hotel

Royalty visited one of the Birmingham’s newest hotels last week as His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester, formally opened the city’s Park Regis Hotel, the brand’s first in Europe.

Accompanied by Mr Simon Topman MBE DL, Deputy Lieutenant representing Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of West Midlands, Dr Keith Bradshaw, High Sheriff of West Midlands and Councillor Carl Rice, Lord Mayor of Birmingham, His Royal Highness visited the city centre hotel on Wednesday (23 November) to mark a formal opening and unveil a commemorative plaque, as well as receive a tour of the £50 million hotel which opened its doors to guests in March.

Distinguished guests joined The Duke for a celebratory toast while enjoying live music from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. A qualified architect with a keen interest in conservation, His Royal Highness was given a tour of the former 1960s office building Auchinleck House, which was transformed into the four-star Park Regis Hotel.

Named after Second World War Hero Field Marshall Claude Auchinleck, the building was converted under permitted development rights from an unused and tired site to the modern hotel, with the addition of an all-glass sky bar onto the building’s roof.

Preserving the history of the building, a bronze statue of Claude Auchinleck was repositioned from within the former Five Ways shopping centre to a prime location on Broad Street, in front of the hotel’s reception.

Robin Ford, General Manager at Park Regis Birmingham, said: “It was fantastic to welcome The Duke of Gloucester to the city and to the Park Regis Hotel. Despite having been open to guests since March, it was a honour to welcome royalty to the hotel to provide us with an official opening. The stunning marble plaque that he unveiled will be hung proudly in reception for guests to enjoy.

“As a qualified architect and someone with an interest in construction, it was brilliant to be able to showcase the hotel to His Royal Highness as such an important piece of the city’s transformation. The building is almost unrecognisable from its former self. It is a truly standout structure and The Duke was impressed at the transformation.”

Cachet Hotel Group has announced the signing of a management agreement with real estate developer Wuhan King Land Co. Ltd. for the dual-branded Cachet Hotel Apartments and URBN Boutique Hotel in Wuhan, China.

Set in the economic, cultural and transportation hub of Central China, the dual-branded property will include 196 rooms, multiple restaurants, and social gathering spaces. The hotel is scheduled to open in 2018 and marks CHG’s first dual-branded project in Wuhan.

IHG, NOVUM Group sign landmark deal to develop 20 hotels across Europe

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and NOVUM Hotel Group, one of the largest hotel groups in Germany, have both announced the signing of a Multiple Development Agreement spanning 20 hotels across Europe in markets such as Germany, Austria and Netherlands. The MDA is the first venture together between both companies.

IHG currently has over 650 hotels in Europe, including 64 hotels in Germany, and is going from strength to strength in a market that is seeing continued expansion.

Hamburg based NOVUM Hotel Group currently has 99 hotels across Germany including their own brand hotels, and those developed in partnership with IHG will be franchised.

Aberdeen City Council and Hilton Worldwide have signed a franchise licence agreement to open a 200-room Hilton Hotels & Resorts property at the new AECC, which will be managed by Redefine|BDL Hotels – the UK’s leading independent hotel management company.

Hilton Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre, set to be the fourth Hilton property in the city, will connect directly to the new AECC and is expected to create approximately 350 jobs.

The hotel, which is due to open in 2019, will include an executive lounge and up to 10 meeting rooms of variable size to complement the outstanding facilities of the adjoining conference centre. The hotel will also include a cocktail bar, speciality restaurant, fitness centre and wet leisure and spa facilities for guests and visitors to the exhibition centre to enjoy.

Hilton Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre is to be managed by Redefine|BDL Hotels. The Glasgow-based firm’s portfolio includes DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh City Centre and DoubleTree by Hilton Dundee.

Hilton is well established in Scotland with 20 properties currently trading in the country. Hilton Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre joins three Hilton hotels in Aberdeen – Hilton Aberdeen Treetops, DoubleTree by Hilton Aberdeen City Centre and Hilton Garden Inn Aberdeen City Centre.

The new hotel will be built in to the new AECC, which will provide four times the exhibition space available at the current venue, double the seated entertainment. The foremost conference and entertainment venue will be competing not just within Scotland but on a global stage.

Dubai master developer Nakheel today signed a Letter of Intent with Hilton Worldwide to manage a new, 256-room hotel at Jumeirah Village Triangle.

Under the proposed agreement, the 18-storey hotel will be managed under the DoubleTree by Hiltonbrand, known for its warm, friendly service that provides upscale comfort for business and leisure travellers.

Announced three weeks ago as a major new feature of Nakheel’s upcoming Al Khail Avenue retail, dining and leisure hub, DoubleTree by Hilton will be directly linked to the mall’s 350 shops, restaurants and entertainment outlets.

The hotel will have 256 rooms (including four suites), an all-day restaurant, coffee shop, lounge, outdoor terrace, pool deck, gymnasium and car park, as well as a leisure club with preferential membership rates for residents of the Jumeirah Village Triangle community.

Nakheel awarded the AED1.5 billion contract to build the mall and hotel complex earlier this month. Construction will begin in October this year, with completion in 2019.

Nakheel’s growing hospitality portfolio includes nearly 5,200 rooms across 14 hotels and serviced apartment complexes at various locations in Dubai, while its retail project portfolio – the biggest in the Middle East – has more than 16 million square feet of lease space in operation or under development.

Hilton to introduce two new brands to Kuwait

Hilton and Al-Rai Real Estate have announced plans today which will see the luxury Conrad Hotels & Resorts and midscale Hilton Garden Inn open their doors to guests in early 2019.

The development forms part of an ambitious expansion project which will see almost $1 billion devoted towards solidifying the position of The Avenues Mall in Kuwait City as one of the world’s top retail destinations.

Conrad Kuwait
This 158-guestroom luxury property will form part of the extension of the Mall’s popular ‘Prestige’ district, which opened in 2012. The district forms Kuwait’s largest luxury shopping destination, home to 47 luxury retail units under a 23 metre dome. The hotel will feature a ballroom, multiple dining options, and an outdoor pool and spa. The hotel’s design concept will complement the Prestige district’s use of copper and rare ‘Portoro’ stone, imported from the mountains of Italy.

Adjoining two of the new districts being created under the fourth phase expansion, Hilton Garden Inn Kuwait will become the brand’s largest hotel in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced that the group will add five new Holiday Inn and Holiday Express hotels to its growing presence in Germany. Having signed 4,000 rooms (24 hotels) within the first half of the year, this is the company’s best signings performance since 2008.

Robert Shepherd, Chief Development Officer Europe, IHG, said: “The German hotel market is accelerating at pace and we are well positioned to take advantage of the appetite for branded growth. 57% of the market is unbranded, so there is a lot of opportunity for IHG to add value with our international brands. Several of our signings in the last few months have been with long-standing partners of IHG, who have signed multiple development agreements with the company. It’s a great start as we head into this quarter.”

Baden-Wuerttemberg
As part of the MDA signed with long-standing partner TriStar, who will be the owner and franchisee of the hotel, Holiday Inn Express Pforzheim will be a new build with the advantages of our next generation design.

• Guests will enjoy the hotel’s most innovative and smart technology at every stage of their stay including a better more comfortable night’s sleep, a functional and flexible place to work and relax in the room, and a lobby that provides a welcoming space to relax or meet with friends or colleagues
• The 140-room hotel, set to open in late 2019, will be of benefit to the area given its position as an economic and cultural hub and ideal location, being situated between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart

InterContinental Hotels Group has announced that the group will add five new Holiday Inn and Holiday Express hotels to its growing presence in Germany

Baden-Wuerttemberg will also benefit from two further Holiday Inn brand family hotels within Mannheim. Holiday Inn Mannheim City – Hauptbahnhof (pictured, main) is ideally located outside Mannheim train station and within walking distance of the city centre, financial district and University of Mannheim.

It will open in 2018 and has been signed in conjunction with MDA partner Primestar. The second largest city in Baden-Wurttemberg after Stuttgart, travellers will be able to enjoy the iconic Luisenpark, just twenty minutes’ walk from the hotel’s location. It will also feature an Open Lobby, a central element to the development of newly built Holiday Inn hotels. The lobby enables dwell time for our guests and the community alike. Holiday Inn Express Mannheim will be located within Mannheim City Centre. Owned and franchised by MDA partner Foremost Hospitality, the new build hotel will have 160 rooms and feature next generation design.

Bavaria
Holiday Inn Express Regensburg will be constructed with Hubert Haupt Immobilienmanagement GmbH. The hotel will be franchised by Success Hotel Management GmbH, a MDA partner who already license four other Holiday Inn Express hotels.

• Holiday Inn Express Regensburg will form part of a new development retail and office site and also offer the next-generation design in each of the 182 rooms and public areas
• Regensburg is a UNESCO world heritage site with a renowned Christmas market, making it popular with leisure travellers, and with several global brands including BMW, Amazon and Toshiba recently setting up bases in the city, it has confirmed itself as a business centre. The hotel will open in late 2017

InterContinental Hotels Group has announced that the group will add five new Holiday Inn and Holiday Express hotels to its growing presence in Germany

Franchised by TriStar, Holiday Inn Express Oberhausen will feature next-generation design and is set to open early next year (no, will not open early next year – they have not started construction yet, will probably open early 2018). Oberhausen is a city of cultural nuances: it annually hosts the International Short Film Festival, but is also a hub for the steel industry. The hotel will have 140 rooms.

IHG has 64 hotels in Germany and 33 in the pipeline, including 53 Holiday Inn brand family hotels open with 32 in the pipeline.

The Alexander Hotel - Yerevan

Starwood to debut first hotel in Armenia – The Alexander

Starwood Hotels is about to enter the Armenian market with the opening of The Alexander, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in the capital Yerevan.

The unique hotel is scheduled to open in summer 2017, underscoring Starwood’s strategy to meet the growing demand for experiential luxury travel in emerging markets around the globe.

The new-build property will feature 114 luxurious guest rooms, including 17 opulent suites and a Presidential Suite. In addition, The Alexander hotel will also offer event and meeting spaces including a ballroom, eight meeting rooms and a business center.

The unparalleled wellness facilities include an indoor pool, spa and a fitness center. Culinary offerings at The Alexander will include an all-day dining restaurant, a cigar club and a lobby bar.

DoubleTree by Hilton, Lithuania

DoubleTree by Hilton to open first hotel in Lithuania

Hilton Worldwide and Vičiūnai Group are bringing the upscale DoubleTree by Hilton brand to Lithuania for the first time. Construction of DoubleTree by Hilton Vilnius City Center is to begin this year, in the heart of the Lithuanian capital.

The 175-room hotel forms part of a wider project, in to which Vičiūnai Group has invested more than €20 million (£17.2 million), whqich will also create new public spaces, designed to attract residents and visitors to the city. Alongside the hotel, a modern outdoor terrace will be built to connect the property to the Vilnius Energy and Technology Museum, which will also benefit from a modern new 1,000sqm exposition hall.

DoubleTree by Hilton, Lithuania

Set to open its doors in 2019, the hotel will also host a conference centre and spa, swimming pool, a restaurant, and a rooftop Sky Bar overlooking Gediminas Castle, the Cathedral and the Old Town. Once the hotel is operational it will create approximately 100 new full time jobs in Vilnius. The new hotel, will be designed by architect Algirdas Kaušpėdas, and built by Vičiūnai Group-owned real estate development company, Sunrise Kaunas.

Having joined Hilton in announcing its first project in Vilnius at a press conference last month, the capital’s mayor Remigijus Šimašius Vilnius greeted the news: “I am very pleased that the negotiations with the Energy Museum on this project were successfully completed, and Vičiūnai Group has committed to invest in the new premises of the museum and a modern public space for residents, which we all are eagerly anticipating.”

An innovative £2 million scheme to create the UK’s first hotel for young people with autism and learning difficulties has been given the green light by Gateshead Council.

The St Camillus Care Group was last week granted planning permission to transform the former Rivers Edge Hotel at Gateshead into The Vault, which will not only provide respite care for young people with a range of learning difficulties but will also train them to work within the hospitality industry.

Initially 20 jobs will be created to carry out the refurbishment, with 30 jobs within the hotel when it is opened in October.

Already the ground floor of the hotel is operating as an American-style diner which is currently used by people with autism, but the hope is that eventually this will be open to the public. The hotel also has a function room which is currently used by groups, with a long term aim of this being available for hire for business meetings and celebrations.

Work will now begin on transforming the 28 bedrooms to make them suitable for respite care, while training has already begun on giving young people with autism and learning difficulties the opportunity to work alongside trained staff.

St Camillus Care Group has partnered with Gateshead College and its Project Choice scheme – which helps young people with autism and learning difficulties find internships – to help the young people learn the skills they need for a career in hospitality. Fairmont Austin, the new 37-storey luxury hotel opening summer 2017, has unveiled natural design elements that will pay homage to the neighbouring Palm Park, currently undergoing revitalisation by the non-profit Waller Creek Conservancy.

Fairmont Austin’s proximity to both Palm Park and Waller Creek inspired Warren Sheets, of San Francisco-based interior design firm Warren Sheets Design, to create an organic continuity from the hotel’s environment to the spaces within, realising the ‘hotel on a park’ concept in a multitude of spectacular and unexpected ways. “On a broader scope, I was looking at how important outdoor life is to Austinites and to the state itself,” said Sheets. “Because the hotel is on a park, I brought The Park into the hotel. All the interior elements down to the smallest details weave a cohesive narrative that honors this beautiful city and will serve to welcome guests with trademark hospitality.”

Upon entering, guests are greeted by two 24-feet-high by 26-feet-wide towering Heritage Oak trees which flank the reception desk; while The Park Lounge features a geometric, life-size topiary garden with majestically imposing tree, and moving lights aimed at the ceiling. Indigenous greenery and cultural references also appear throughout the hotel’s interior.

Fairmont Austin’s outdoor spaces were designed by dwg., an Austin-based landscape architecture studio. dwg. was selected to ensure a seamless integration of Waller Creek’s vision with Fairmont’s environmentally sustainable standards.

“Our design for the landscape celebrates and embraces the unique location and proximity of the hotel to Waller Creek and Palm Park. The tagline we used for the project was a ‘hotel in a park’ and, subsequently the rooftop pool, gardens and event spaces became known as ‘a park in a hotel’. The vision for the landscape is very innovative and amplifies the unique and critical ecosystem of Waller Creek,” said Daniel Woodroffe, president of dwg. “This is accomplished by using native and adapted plants and trees and significantly reducing water consumption by harvesting the AC condensate from the hotel’s air conditioning system. Ensuring the brand standards of the hotel and the commitment to sustainability was very important to the success of our design.”

The Red River Canopy Walk, a 33-foot-tall elevated connection from Fairmont Austin to the Austin Convention Center, will allow the public and guests to view Waller Creek and Palm Park from a unique aerial perspective. The pedestrian bridge will include a stairway and ramp leading to Palm Park and three miles of new hike and bike trails. The elegant, open-air design of the Canopy Walk will reinforce Waller Creek’s mission of renewing urban parks to create authentic and uplifting experiences that reflect Austin’s dynamic spirit.

New build £13m, 172-bed hotel in Manchester given green light

A new hotel development in Manchester has been given the green light, with a scheduled completion cost of £13 million and should be finished at the end of 2017.

SimpsonHaugh and Partners has secured planning permission for the new hotel on the Cable Street regeneration project in Manchester’s city centre.

The new hotel will be designed for Axcel Hospitality who aims to establish a ‘distinctive sense of place’.

The 8,000-square-metre scheme will be nine storeys high and created in the place of a surface car park. The four-star hotel will have 172 bedrooms, a café / bar, fitness centre and meeting rooms.

It is thought the new hotel could be operated by AC Hotels, under the Marriott brand. Construction is expected to begin in September and be completed by the end of 2017.

“With its sculpted massing and careful attention to materiality, the new hotel seeks to provide an exemplar high-quality design to stimulate regeneration throughout the rest of the New Cross district,” says Partner David Green of SimpsonHaugh and Partners.

From the Arabian Hotel Investment Conference (AHIC) in Dubai, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has announced that it is on track to grow its portfolio in the Middle East to 100 hotels by 2020.

This follows five new deal signings that will add over 1,200 rooms in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Starwood will also open five hotels in 2016 across the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The first foundations have been laid for One&Only Portonovi – an integral part of the new luxury lifestyle development being built in Montenegro.

Hilton has begun proceedings to enter the Serbian market after signing an agreement with local developers to open a Hilton-branded hotel in the capital city Belgrade’s ‘Old Town’ district.

The new-build, seven-storey Hilton Belgrade will be located in close proximity to major sights such as Square Slavija, St. Mark’s Church, the National Museum, Republic Square (Trg Republike) and the National Theatre. Also within easy reach will be government offices, financial institutions and major corporate offices.

In an agreement with Assets Real Estate Development Company, Hilton has announced the development of the Conrad Doha as part of its luxury branch’s ongoing expansion. Hilton is one of many chains to begin expansion in the Middle Eastern country; already operating two properties in Qatar and seven others in the pipeline.

Located in the heart of Doha’s financial district, the hotel provides easy access to the city’s downtown and the new Hamad International Airport.

The 325-guestroom property will include 30 suites and approximately 10,700 square feet of event space, including the Grand Ballroom. A spa, fitness center, and outdoor pool will also make their debut along with seven onsite restaurants and bars.

Shangri-La announces new Hotel Jen in Kuala Lumpur

Shangri-La has announced the development of the first Hotel Jen in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Opening in 2019, Hotel Jen Kuala Lumpur is the second Hotel Jen project under development in Malaysia, following the signing of Hotel Jen Kota Kinabalu in Borneo in September 2015.

The announcement was made at a signing ceremony held in Hong Kong to finalise a management agreement between Concorde Arch and Hotel Jen.

Concorde Arch initially acquired the land for building the corporate office; however, the opportunity of venturing towards hospitality became apparent with the advent of millennial travellers seeking more curated lifestyle and leisure accommodation inspired by this growing target market.

The hotel is strategically located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur at the intersection of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan P Ramlee, just 800 metres from the city’s landmark Petronas Twin Towers and 300 metres from the KL Tower.

The property will cater to both business and leisure travellers, being in close proximity to the central business district and Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), as well as having easy access to some of South East Asia’s largest shopping malls, street markets and a wide range of restaurants and entertainment.
