The ever popular Paisley design is given a modern twist in this new fabric backed wallcovering from Newmor. KOBE is awarded the 2012 Trevira CS Club gold membership

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

During a special award ceremony at the recently held Heimtextil international trade fair in Frankfurt Germany the company Trevira, worldwide acknowledged for its permanently flame retardant fibres and yarns, awarded KOBE with its 2012 Trevira CS Club Gold membership.Anke Vollenbröker, Head of Marketing, explains:
’The Gold and Silver Club Members gained their status on the basis of established criteria. The criteria does not reflect turnover alone, but also take account of such factors as loyalty, creativity or the international presence. Trevira CS stands as a trademark for the textile fabric and with every new collection our customers are giving the brand significance. If we want to expand our product even more, then the best way to do this is to support companies as KOBE to bring their Trevira CS products to market successfully, and that means on a world-wide basis as well.”

Being a Trevira CS Club Gold member does not only offer KOBE the standard services available including, for instance, the trade mark test, IMO testing, technical support and trend advice, product literature and certification, and participation in fabric catalogues.

KOBE may also call upon special additional services that cover a variety of measures, from fast track processing of trademark applications, to offers of participation at trade exhibitions and events, promotion of international projects and communications.

Roger Duffhuis, Marketing and Sales Director at KOBE: ‘Trevira CS is for KOBE the premium brand for flame retartdant fabrics. End user and designer satisfaction is key to KOBE. With both we have build a strong reputation by developing ‘Trevira CS solutions’ based on superb performance, durability and unique aesthetics. The drive of Trevira CS to innovate and to set the standards for flame retardant fabrics has matched perfectly with KOBE’s position and ambition in the international contract market. Therefore we are looking forward to continuing teaming up with Trevira CS in a close working partnership’.

Textiles that bear the trademark Trevira CS are permanently flame retardant. Unlike fabrics that receive a surface treatment at a later stage, Trevira CS textiles offer long-term safety. From the fibre and flat filament yarn through to dyed textured yarns, Trevira is the only supplier in the world that offers the complete range of textile polyester products from the one source. Trevira CS products are suitable for home and household textiles, apparel, automotive interiors, hygiene textiles and technical applications.

BDI challenges university innovation funding and effectiveness

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Is the funding of universities to deliver design, innovation and prototyping to industry a good investment of public money?

British Design Innovation (BDI) unequivocally supports the government’s promotion of innovation and manufacturing. We believe it is an effective means of driving economic growth – after all, it’s what we ourselves were set up to do. And therein lies the rub.Over the past few years the government has invested many millions of pounds of public money in initiatives that fund some universities to offer subsidised or free design and innovation services, particularly to small and medium-sized businesses – and setting them up in unfair competition with our members.

BDI represents Industrial Design companies and individuals involved in commercial product, service and interaction development. Throughout the UK, BDI members help entrepreneurs, businesses, universities and public sector organisations to develop ideas. We create intellectual property and new technology in the design of innovative products and services.

Is funding a duplication of what Industrial Designers already do worthwhile?

We think not. With so many talented Industrial Design businesses already in existence (thanks to their massive investments in training and technology), it is surely unfair and anti-competitive to publicly fund new entrants. In most cases we find no evidence that funders properly consider the displacement impact of their interventions on the private sector or the local skills base. Most BDI member companies work without subsidy, and many are based in the most economically disadvantaged areas of the country. In these areas – and particularly in the Midlands and North of England – they report that the ability to grow has been stifled.

Do the organisations that engage in Higher Education Institution (HEI)-delivered schemes receive best practice support?

Not necessarily. BDI members report that these same institutions, although publicly funded to provide design services to SMEs, request academic staff internships – ironically to learn about the very professional design practice they are subsidised to offer. This lack of commercial experience reveals why so few university-based design and innovation centres survive once public funding runs out. If they were providing real value, surely the millions invested would give a competitive advantage (albeit an unfair one) in the open commercial market?

Has the government’s focus on funding HEIs become confused with support for business?

We think so. Many of our members believe that the relationship between some academic institutions and the bodies charged with supporting business has become too close. Furthermore, the failure of some HEIs to consider, or care about, the impact of their activities on design businesses has driven a wedge between parties that previously collaborated well. Endemic in all of this, the BDI board has observed, is the fact that public investment for innovation is provided by a bewildering array of sources.

Britain cannot afford to reinvent something it already has – there is, quite simply, no need to. There is not, and never has been, a need to publicly fund the setting-up or delivery of design, prototyping and innovation services in HEIs and other publicly-funded bodies.

What is BDI’s role in all this?

In all regions of the UK, talented people in small businesses have a track record of working with industry to develop new products and services, using the latest technology and employing best practice in innovation.

BDI members are well-connected and informed about innovation policy, and are actively engaged in advisory and implementation roles for publicly-funded design and innovation interventions. BDI has also taken positive steps toward creating better industry/academic relationships, by forming the University Design Industry Partnership (UDIP) to enhance collaboration between HEIs and the commercial design sector.

So what do we need to do now?

Surely we could all benefit from a more joined-up approach? Too much funding from too many sources cannot be the most effective way of engaging the most competent providers.

    ● BDI calls on the government and its agencies to support universities by concentrating on education – their core competence – to advance the teaching of design, thereby improving the career prospects of their graduates and enriching the economy.

    ● BDI calls on the HEIs to join BDI’s efforts to develop more productive collaboration between Industrial Design professionals and education by becoming involved with UDIP.

    ● BDI calls on industrial designers to become more involved, and be represented by BDI – the only national membership body focused on promoting and representing the Industrial Design profession.

IHG also announced the launch of its newest hospitality training Academy in London. The announcement was welcomed by the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who attended the launch of the IHG Academy programme at the soon to open Holiday Inn London Stratford City. The new hotel is one of four IHG hotels in the area that will be creating new jobs, for which students of the IHG Academy programme can apply.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said, “It’s fantastic to see IHG growing its UK business and creating 3,000 new jobs. The British service sector is world-beating, and will soon welcome millions of guests to enjoy London 2012. But reaching this gold standard needs investment in people. IHG are leading the way in their sector through a tailored academy programme. It’s an added investment that means young people can learn the skills for the industry in a local college, and then start their career in a local hotel. This shows real investment in our future workforce, is a huge boost for jobs across the country, but crucially will see local people benefit from training and work.”

Holiday Inn, part of the IHG family of brands, is the official hotel provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As part of its Olympic legacy, IHG has launched a new hospitality training academy in partnership with Newham College in one of the Games’ host boroughs.

With two new hotels to be built in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, successful students will be prize candidates for some of the 140 new jobs being created in the local area as the new hotels open.

IHG’s Chief Executive Richard Solomons joined Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and students at the soon to open Holiday Inn London Stratford City to launch the new Academy programme.

Richard Solomons, IHG’s Chief Executive said, “Hospitality is a great business to be in and working in hotels offers people exciting career paths for the future. We’re pleased to be working with our hotel owners to create jobs and training opportunities in the UK at this time. The IHG Academy programme allows us to join with local education bodies in the UK and around the world to provide real-life skills and enhance employment prospects for local people. IHG benefits by having access to talent from the neighbourhoods near our hotels.”

The IHG Academy programme in Newham was developed in partnership with Newham College and will provide talented local people with hospitality training and practical work experience at a hotel from the IHG family of brands. Students take a six-month tailored course that combines the best of the Hospitality Skills Diploma NVQ with four weeks practical work experience in a hotel. Students qualify with a Hospitality Level 2 Diploma and will have the opportunity to apply for jobs at entry level with IHG.

There are 42 IHG Academy programmes worldwide and 5,500 students were involved in the hospitality training globally last year.

¹ IHG is to create 2,992 new jobs in the UK over the next three years.
² IHG is to create 1,144 new jobs in the UK in 2012.

French hotel supply 2012, It’s draining faster

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

From the annual analysis of the French hotel supply conducted by MKG Hospitality, on 1st January 2012, France counts less than 18,500 classified hotels for a total number of less than 648,000 rooms. This last figure sees a net loss of 6,400 hotel rooms. The constant shrinkage of the French hotel supply is mainly due to the decrease within the Economy independent-hotel category (1* and 2*). In this category alone, there are 634 fewer hotels and 12,300 fewer rooms than last year. The new supply coming mostly from hotel chains is not sufficient to compensate the losses. It is getting increasingly difficult to launch new construction projects and to compete with long-stay residences.

The overall shrinkage of France’s capacity to accommodate foreigners means that international clients might relocate to countries better equipped than France. The industry calls for a realistic and dynamic tourist strategy in favor of new constructions and new hotel concepts.

While restructuring the hotel supply appears to be necessary to meet the needs of a hotel supply that has been revived by improved quality, the void left behind as obsolete hotels (or hotels that are out of the market) disappear is no longer successfully being replaced by a new supply. The detailed analysis of the hotel supply carried out for the entire country by the database at MKG Hospitality shows a national supply that has shrunk by 1%, to drop below the 648,000 room mark. A net balance of another 6,385 rooms disappeared from the inventory. This loss may be added to the 8,500 rooms lost the previous year. With this new deterioration, France’s global supply is returning to its volume of a decade ago, in the midst of the 9-11 crisis.

This situation is explained by to the sharp decrease of the independent hotel supply that shrank by 2% (or 7,300 fewer rooms). This happened at a time when the usual dynamism of the chain-hotel supply is slowed by difficulty of bringing a new supply out of the ground and pursuing the cleaning of certain franchise brand chains. In the end, the chain supply grew by fewer than 1,000 rooms in all.

The economic crisis, the cost of marketing, and consumer expectations have undermined the profitability of a growing number of economy hotels that are paying the high price with a net drain of 634 hotels and 12,300 rooms – a record loss.

However, the slump in the independent hotel sector does not condemn all operations. The same inventory also shows that growth in the independent supply is very significant in the three, four, and, five-star categories, which together experienced net growth of more than 5,000 rooms. This movement is the continuation of the decade-long trend that marks the return of independent hoteliers to there are of expertise: full service hotels in city centers.

Moreover, hotel groups have decided to place franchising amongst their developmental priorities. Due to internal movements between chains, the growing power of franchisees in the supplies of corporate chains is not visible in the figures representing global growth. Growth, even marginal, for chain hotels on a shrinking global market allows them to cross another threshold of market share. Today, more than 43% of the global supply operates under a hotel brand, and certainly more than 50% if we add the main consortia, which require the flying of their banner.

The analysis of the global lodging supply in France is pertinent only to classified hotels. However is they are not the only ones to address a commercial clientele. Parallel types of accommodations are increasingly poaching on these markets. Tax incentives remain strong for stimulating investments in new tourism residences and especially urban residences which have the advantage of being less seasonal. Despite the succession of high profile failures of operators such as Mona Lisa, Maison de Biarritz and Residhotel, real estate promotion is doing well: Adagio by Pierre&Vacances/Accor, Citadines, Appart’City, Park&Suites, Odalys City, Cerise by Exhore and Hipark are all multiplying their openings. While the tension with hoteliers may have subsided, it is clear that the residence-hotel model is absorbing a significant share of developers’ resources as they focus less on the hotel industry.

Eco Chic in Mozambique – Luxury Lodges Showcase Sustainable Style

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Azura at Quilalea, which opened in November 2011, underwent a six month renovation project redeveloping the entire infrastructure, expanding facilities and upgrading the nine luxurious villas in keeping with its pristine environment in the very southern part of the Quirimbas Archipelago. The new lodge is a true eco boutique retreat. The accommodation has been revamped in Azura’s trademark subtle yet stunning way, with natural furnishings and pure African elegance. The villas are built from natural coral stone and makuti thatch, and are open-plan and spacious with stylish décors of wood, cotton and locally sourced materials such as rope, pebbles and rattan. Conscious of its stunning setting and the need to preserve it, Azura at Quilalea has embarked on a unique energy saving project. All of the villas have an energy control system whereby guests can choose their own energy consumption through a wall switch at their villa, opting for either ‘ECO’ or ‘LUXE’; Eco resulting in power for the bare minimum requirements for the room, such as basic lighting and fan, or Luxe providing all mod cons including Aircon.Further south along the Mozambique coastline, Quilalea’s sister property, Azura on Benguerra Island (opened 2007) was hand built by the local community, and blends designer modern chic with all that is traditional in Mozambique. This includes beautifully carved beams, polished wooden floors and artisan artwork faultlessly finished off with the creature comforts of a five star boutique hotel.

Azura is an ethical lodge, owned and operated in partnership with the local community, with a vision to harness the power of responsible tourism for the benefit of the local people, whilst conserving the unique cultural and biological diversity of Benguerra Island. Even before the building plans were finalised or the first brick laid, a dedicated team of environmental specialists were appointed to identify valuable and essential local projects that Azura could support.

The actual building of Azura was done by hand using a local workforce of some 350 people, many of whom were trained up from their previous lives as subsistence fishermen. Extensive use was made of natural materials, transported to the island by dhow to reduce the amount of fuel utilised in the process. A state of the art sewerage treatment plant was installed to recycle the water thereby preventing damage to the environment often seen in the area by the use of soakaways.

The accommodation at Azura includes 16 spacious beach villas all just a stones throw from the beach. Nestled amidst the indigenous trees and bushes, each villa offers a private sanctuary for the ultimate in relaxation, furnished with cool designer contemporary cottons and textures of Africa, designed in complete harmony with their surroundings.

Coral Lodge 15.41 (opened in June 2010), a contemporary beach lodge in Northern Mozambique, was created by renowned Dutch designer Edward Van Vliet. An interior designer by trade, Van Vliet has added luxury hotel design to his portfolio, which is where he has made his mark. When creating Coral Lodge 15.41 he set out to combine the latest in luxury and comfort with an authentic feel of Mozambican style and pureness. Thanks to his use of natural colours and mix of wood and textures the lodge blends effortlessly with its surroundings. Van Vliet’s ethos of creating a ‘beautiful world within worlds’ and of resisting ‘decorative overkill’ but rather of combining traditional design and natural materials with innovative techniques, is apparent in the eclectic nature of Coral Lodge 15.41. A huge part of the design philosophy was the desire to embrace and preserve the wild, rugged and untouched Varanda nature reserve which surrounds the lodge. Privately owned, La Varanda is full of pristine beaches, dunes and mangroves.

Workers from the local community joined builders from Maputo and South Africa in constructing Coral Lodge, bringing their expertise in thatched roofing and setting tiles in the traditional way. They continue to contribute to the maintenance of the lodge.

Coral Lodge 15.41 comprises 10 villas, each with a surface area of about 100m². To further enhance the area’s natural setting the villas have been built on top of the dunes to give incredible sea views and a continuous breeze. For complete privacy and relaxation the minimalist villas include various sitting areas, a spacious bedroom, separate bathroom with huge bath and shower and large veranda with comfy chairs and daybed for lazy afternoons.

Leonardo Hotels signs management contract with Alden Luxury Suite Hotel, Zurich

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The highly respected Leonardo Hotels chain has signed a management contract with the exclusive 5-star Alden Luxury Suite Hotel. The hotel, which is a listed building, is seen by Leonardo Hotels as a standalone property and will be run as such. The 5-star Alden Luxury Suite Hotel was built in 1895 and fully renovated in 2004. A particular feature of the hotel is the way in which it cleverly combines the splendour of the fin de siècle with purist design and the high-tech comforts of the modern age. It has 22 exclusively furnished suites – including a presidential suite, a modern restaurant, a piano bar and even its own library.

Depending on type of room, the suites range in size between 60 and 100m². All offer modern comfort and luxurious interiors, in part with original stucco features and parquet flooring. They are equipped as standard with air conditioning, video on demand, flat-screen TV, high-speed Internet access and wireless LAN. The spacious bathrooms also have a whirlpool, a separate shower and, in some cases, a separate guest toilet.

On the culinary front, guests are spoiled in the Alden Restaurant and the piano bar. Just like the rest of the hotel, the rooms here delight with warm colours and modern designer furniture combined with historic elements. In addition to Swiss classics, guests dining in this elegant ambience can enjoy innovative main dishes or light snacks to stave off hunger between meals. Gault Millau has already awarded the hotel one toque for its excellent cuisine.

The Alden Luxury Suite Hotel is situated in the centre of Zurich, in the heart of the banking and financial quarter.

In 5 to 10 minutes guests can be at the world-famous Lake Zurich, the Tonhalle Zurich orchestral concert hall or the Opera House, as well as the well-known Bahnhofstrasse with its luxury boutiques or Zurich’s vibrant old town.

    Metropolitan Chic from Morgan

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Morgan Furniture, the design-led British manufacturer of contract furniture, has exclusively supplied the soft seating and tables for refurbishment of the iconic Met Bar in London. Armchairs, low stools and bar stools from the Pastille Collection from Morgan were chosen for their ideal blend of comfort and elegance. There is also a strong element of bespoke design to meet specific project requirements.Created by Morgan Design Director, Katerina Zachariades, Pastille is a modern and versatile seating collection which combines generous upholstery with show wood detailing. In the Met Bar, padded cushions and upholstered chair backs are smartly dressed in orange and chocolate brown leather and teamed with dark wood to create a prestigious, elegant space.

An exemplary example of bespoke design from Morgan is the L-shaped seating that takes pride of place in the window of the bar. Based around the Pastille 5052 model armchair, the approximate 3.5 x 1.5m seating section is one of the first items on view when entering the bar so was important to make a positive impact. Bespoke tables were also designed for the project with an inlaid glass detail and bespoke base.

Set within the cool and contemporary Metropolitan Hotel in Old Park Lane, the Met Bar was first opened in 1997 and fast became an established location for a great London night out. This iconic bar has now received a major renovation resulting in a new look and style that is fit for a new era of sophisticated living. Morgan worked successfully to a tight deadline and closely with the design team throughout the project including designer, Linzi Coppick, from Forme UK and client, Comojo UK Ltd. Close contact was maintained on site with Mark Oberney and General Manager of the Metropolitan Hotel, Thomas Orchard.

Alternative Lodging provision in the Western Cape, South Africa

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

In Europe finding places to stay between Review hotels has led to finds of interesting operations and interiors – for example the Noma Residences in Poland or the refurbished Kyriad chain in France.

In South Africa there are similar discoveries to be made. In travelling around this country it is quite possible to look ahead on the web to find intermediate stops as one does in Europe – distances are great and if you don’t want to spend your entire holiday in a car then sensible breaks in choice spots are needed. In Africa driving can be more challenging – starting with the unfamiliar hire car, but continuing through unsurfaced tracks and infinitely variable driving skills (on the part of other drivers of course). The cost of an average B&B is around R400 per person a night (about £33 in 2012) for bed and breakfast but this can be very variable.Paying more does not mean that the standard will be better. It is also sensible to find a rental as a base if you are visiting for any length of time. I am fortunate to have relations in Hout Bay, a suburb of Cape Town (although it calls itself the Independent Republic of Hout Bay) where I can leave the main bulk of my luggage and travel light, returning to write up experiences or to change clothing.

Travelling over 500 miles to visit an hotel necessarily involves intermediate stops, and the hotels I want to see often do not lend themselves to any other form of transport than the car. The base rental of course can become the whole holiday if you do not want to be touring, and there are plenty of vacation properties available to rent if you know where you want to go. In some seaside towns 80% of the properties are holiday homes.

As an example I took a couple of weekend breaks at Sanderling Beach House on the beach at Dwarskerbos, St Helena Bay on the West Coast about 100 miles north of Cape Town. This three bedroom three bathroom house sits on the beach with a spectacular view of the ocean, where I have seen whales and dolphins, and is just down the road from a major bird reserve. Fairly isolated it is still just a short drive to a selection of restaurants, and there is a major supermarket down the road in the fishing port of Velddriff. Nearly all the surrounding properties are second homes, giving isolation during the week, miles of empty beaches.

B&B’s examples here include the Mymering winery near Ladismith (no, that’s a different Ladysmith – relieved?) and a spectacular B&B Wildlife reserve in Outsdhoorn where I saw African Clawless Otters at close range, as well as a more traditional B&B in Riversdale.

The accolade coincides with the hotel’s completion of its final phase of refurbishment, investing £150,000 to upgrade 17 doubles and 19 twin rooms. The privately owned, modern 3 star hotel joins just 16 other hotels to have achieved this tribute in Great Britain and becomes the third Plus hotel in Yorkshire. Belgraves Hotel opens in London

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Set in the heart of Belgravia, Belgraves is Thompson Hotels’ first flagship London Hotel with designs by EPR Architects Ltd and Tara Bernerd & Partners.Harilela Hotels commissioned the architects to fully refurbish the existing out-dated Sheraton Hotel to meet the standards of a contemporary luxury boutique market, both internally and externally, with a minimum impact to the existing concrete structure.

The existing building had many issues, but the primary challenge was the development of the two main frontages along Chesham Place and Pont Street. The architect’s proposal was to remove the existing two and three storey brown glass extension and replace it with a clear double height frameless glass façade providing light and transparency as an essential element of the design.

The detailing of the glass frontage was critical to the success of the interiors and the styling of the hotel as a whole. The structural glazing needed to be domestic in scale without creating a ‘goldfish bowl shop front’ or becoming too commercial. A combination of stainless steel columns, glass fins and point fixings were proposed and subsequently developed with the sub-contractor. The design also incorporated a 3m high solid timber and bronze entrance door with a bronze finished canopy and columns protruding through the frameless glass frontage. This warmth of materials in contrast to the glass façade offers an immediate understanding and statement with regards to the hotel entrance.

An all year round roof-top terrace was designed at the rear of the hotel to provide the necessary open space under UK Smoking Regulations. The design for this semi-enclosed space incorporates a bi-parting retractable roof light and fixed frameless glass roof over the double height extension linking this outside space to the main building.

A successful collaboration with Tara Bernerd & Partners, Creative Direction & Interior Design, ensured integration of the key architectural elements within the overall branding of the hotel and an intelligent and creative solution to the project.

David Osborne, Managing Director of the Roman Group, commented: “Our Haven range of enclosures and bath screens is going from strength to strength. Fameed Khalique introduces a collection dedicated to light

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

The LcD textile collection by Luc Druez (available through Fameed Khalique) is a limited edition of ‘hijacked’ fabrics made from reclaimed technical fibres. These awe-inspiring materials are produced in small-scale specialist workshops in Belgium, France and Italy for use in private home decoration, haute couture and interior design. Their fantastical forms also lend themselves to wider creative use: in the hotel industry, for window dressing, restaurants, theatres, and for accessories, clothing, hats and bags. Paris-based Luc Druez’s work can be found on the catwalks of haute couture fashion shows (including Christian Dior, Chanel, Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton), in the theatre and opera, and in the projects of the greatest decorators such as Peter Marino and Andrée Putman. He calls the people who bring his textiles to life in transparent settings or in movement around the body the ‘stage managers’ in his work.

In an interior setting the translucent nature of the fabrics is a perfect partner where there is a light-source, natural or otherwise, or where there is a need for blinds, screens or dividers. They have the industry standards and specifications to also be used on walls or for seating in a commercial or private environment.

What is truly unique about the collection is that all the materials used to create the collection share a technical background in one way or another, ranging from fishing-rod string to PVC. Each salvaged material holds its own unique property that is fundamental to its end form.

Fishing-rod string: creates a translucent, strong, washable yarn
Polyurethane gum: cast on to a textured yarn this produces a leather look-alike with flame-resistant properties that can be shaped and moulded
Electrician’s copper wire: oxidized in an infinite palette of colours, each one unique. The magnetic field of this metal is most in tune with the human body than any other precious metal
Synthetic raffia: this mass-dyed filament yarn is highly UV-resistant and is fully washable
PVC: transparent and available in unlimited colours, it is also naturally flame-resistant
Cellophane: ultra light, transparent and light-reflecting

Born in Belgian Luc Druez studied music at the Brussels Conservatoire before an unfortunate lapse of memory during a concert caused him to abandon his career to look for another means of artistic expression. His grandfather, a tailor, inspired him to produce textile creations that would have a tangible existence, one that was more lasting than the memory of a concert performance. He has worked as a textiles research consultant for the past 15 years.

The first LcD collection was unveiled in Paris during Luc Druez’s solo exhibition in 1995 at the Marine Biras Textile Gallery. Since then, the LcD edition has been present at trade fairs in Belgium (Intérieur show, Courtrai), Paris (Maison & Objet), Milan (Salon del Mobile), London (100% Design) and Japan (Ichinomiya Foundation), in temporary exhibitions and as hangings at shows (Lille 2004 and Designers Days, to name just two). Luc Druez also works as a textile research consultant in many textile firms and in schools. His original pieces form part of public and private collections.

A world of sustainable materials at the click of mouse

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

How can architects, designers and the building industry find out about new, sustainable construction materials? That’s the question that Jakki Dehn, a reader at London’s Kingston University, tried to address when she started work cataloguing more than 1,200 sustainable materials for use in the construction industry. The result is a materials library, Rematerialise, which is now available online at rematerialise.org. Ms Dehn has been developing Rematerialise at Kingston University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture for 18 years but it’s only now that the bulk of the library can be viewed on the library’s website.

“Until now we’ve only had a small site with about 80 products on it,” she explained. “Now there are more than a thousand materials listed – so industry professionals, teachers, researchers, students and anyone with a need to know more about ecologically-responsible design can find out about materials that use fewer non-renewable resources or can be re-grown.”

Ms Dehn began her research into sustainable materials in 1994 and received Arts and Humanities Research Council funding in 2003. As word about the resource spread, new products started arriving on an almost daily basis. Rematerialise now houses materials from 15 different countries.

“We recently received a new type of flooring material called zelfo,” she said. “The main ingredients are hemp, straw, tropical grasses and sugar cane.” Another eye-catching material is resilica, which is used in kitchen worktops as an alternative to granite or formica. It’s made mainly of glass recycled from car windscreen and building sites.

Once planners have done initial research online they can make an appointment to view the materials themselves at Kingston University’s Knights Park campus.

Representatives from Marks and Spencer were so impressed by the library’s emphasis on sustainability they invited a group of second year product and furniture design students to help furnish their new headquarters. Kingston’s design students have also worked with IKEA, The Prison Enterprise Services and Transport for London.

    Haven Moves Production to UK

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Shower manufacturer Haven, part of the Roman group of Companies, is bucking the current trend by moving the manufacture of their sister company’s range of enclosures and bath screens away from China and will instead be manufacturing the products at their County Durham factory headquarters. Roman has proudly flown the flag of British design and manufacture since they were founded in 1985. However, in a move engineered to combat low cost, low quality imports from China, Roman set up sister company Haven in 2006. Haven introduced a range of price sensitive models that are carefully designed by Roman’s team of designers, but to remain price competitive, they were manufactured in China. The company has now decided the time is right to move the manufacture of these products to the UK, so they will be produced alongside their other shower enclosures and bath screens.

This move has been enabled due to the movement of the pound against the US dollar, coupled with higher costs from the Far East, which has seen the price of imported goods experiencing great fluctuation – this is alongside increased shipping costs. Roman has made the decision to take advantage of the company’s own infrastructure and, due to the rapid growth in demand for Haven products, moving the manufacture in-house to Roman now makes sense financially for the company.

Roman began the move of Haven product manufacture to the UK in March 2011, this was then done in two phases with all remaining products being moved to UK manufacture at the end of 2011. Following the move, Roman has been backing the Stoves campaign to promote and support UK manufacture and is promoting all Roman and Haven products as being UK manufactured by displaying the Stoves ‘Made in Britain’ tick logo.

The Haven range is a low cost alternative to Roman’s own range of products which are designed with the highest specification for the luxury end of the bathroom market.

Roman Group Managing Director, David Osborne commented: “Being a British designer and manufacturer is very important to us as a company. Therefore we are extremely pleased to be able to move the manufacture of all Haven products into the main factory in Newton Aycliffe. At Roman we have over 25 years experience of manufacturing showering solutions and prefer to keep a close eye on all our products as they are built and delivered. Due to the current market conditions and the popularity of the Haven products, we are now able to make the move and bring the manufacture of these products in house. We have stringent quality control measures for all our products and this will now be applicable to all the Haven enclosures and bath screens. We are proud now to be able to promote these products as being UK manufactured.”

Style in the Ukraine’s for First Starwood Hotel

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

JOI-Design has recently completed the interior design of the first Starwood hotel in the Ukraine. The flagship Four Points by Sheraton Zaporozhye is a stylish new hotel located along the banks of the Dnieper River in one of the Ukraine’s largest cities. The designers’ aim was to honour and interpret the region’s rich heritage through a fresh, contemporary lens fit for the booming economic and cultural growth of this important industrial centre and transportation hub. As a result, natural materials such as warm timber and locally-sourced stone are prevalent, and traditional patterns have been implemented from a modern perspective.Upon entering the lobby, guests are greeted by the sunflower, a folklore symbol representing the Ukraine’s fertile lands. Overhead, an abstraction of this motif shines down in the form of a chandelier crafted from glass balls in both clear and golden hues, while underfoot; a magnified reflection of the flower’s petals appears in the pattern of the cream marble floor. Overall, the lobby sparkles with a sophisticated elegance.

Following the lines of the lobby’s curved shell are two sweeping staircases with lit marble steps that cast an ethereal glow to create drama and intrigue. And the traditional Ukrainian colour pairing of blue and yellow has been harmoniously translated in the design of a sleek reception desk graced with backlit frosted panels and a gilded woven screen reminiscent of the compact florets within a large sunflower blossom.

This colour duo also extends to the other public areas through accents such as the cushions on the plush, tawny leather sofas and lounge chairs in the library, wine bar and café.

“Flavors” restaurant has a natural feel, using contrasting tones of light and dark walnut timber to create a connection with the Ukraine’s moniker as the “Bread Basket of Europe”, earned due to the region’s rich soils and abundant agricultural harvests. The sunflower shape appears again, at both the frosted glass entry door as well as in the marble inlay in the oak planks which elegantly wind through the restaurant to form the circulation areas. Fresh celadon green cushions, flaxen wallcovering and glowing pendant lights all help create a warm and relaxing dining atmosphere. Modern paintings illustrate folkloric figures, tying together the design’s overall concept and demonstrating once again how tradition and modernity can be stylishly merged.

IHG launches first hotel brand designed for the Chinese consumer

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

IHG yesterday (19th March) launched the first upscale, international hotel brand designed specifically for the Chinese traveller – HUALUXE Hotels and Resorts. HUALUXE translates from Hua, which means majestic China and luxe, representing luxury. The HUALUXE brand has been developed in response to three core growth opportunities that IHG is tapping into – consumer demand for an upscale international hotel brand that demonstrates pride in Chinese customs and reflects local tradition; the domestic China opportunity, whereby the number of domestic travellers is expected to reach 3.3 billion in 2015 and the China hotel market is projected to grow by 5-8% annually by 2030 and the international opportunity, where outbound trips from China are projected to grow from 10 million to more than 100 million in the next 10 to 15 years.

Richard Solomons, CEO IHG, said: “Building on our proven ability to build, develop and nurture brands, we are very proud to be launching HUALUXE Hotels and Resorts – a genuine first for the industry and a unique brand developed by our Chinese team that we know will resonate with the very important, fast-growing, Chinese consumer base. HUALUXE takes the best aspects of renowned Chinese hospitality and applies IHG’s international scale, powerful systems and unparalleled insights into the Chinese market to deliver a traditional high-end consistent experience.”

IHG is already the largest international hotel operator in China, with more than 160 hotels across 60 cities and sees the opportunity for this brand to be in over 100 cities in China in the next 15-20 years. IHG has already signed over 20 letters of intent which are now being converted into contracts and we expect the first hotel to be open in late 2013 or early 2014.

Keith Barr, CEO IHG Greater China, said: “IHG was the first international hotel group to enter China nearly 30 years ago, which gives us a deep understanding of the market and its consumers. We have had great success over the years with the five brands we already have in this market, and we will now leverage our experience, and the strong relationships and reputation we have with customers and owners to establish and grow HUALUXE.”

HUALUXE will offer guests a more traditional experience based on four priorities that Chinese travellers want from an upscale hotel:

Tradition – Long-celebrated traditions are reflected in every aspect of the physical hotel design and are brought to life through a refined welcome experience, deep-rooted tea culture and signature food & beverage throughout the hotel from our Fu Lin restaurant to late night noodle bar Rejuvenation- Natural surroundings from the green arrival, to the lobby garden and resort inspired bathroom helps our guests break away from the pressures of their busy lives and be reinvigorated for the challenges ahead.

Status– Recognition and respect are fundamental in Chinese society. A seamless VIP arrival, a unique Club Lounge experience and specialty food and beverage ‘hosts’ throughout the hotel serve to underpin the importance of our guests and ensure the hospitality they receive and in return give to their business partners is flawless.

Familiar Spaces – A range of public/private spaces are thoughtfully set out across the hotel. From multi-function suites, rejuvenation centre and tea house we’ve created a unique set of facilities for a wide range of social interactions and business meetings.

HUALUXE will launch initially in Tier 1, 2 and 3 cities and resort locations in China and in time, will open in major cities elsewhere in the world so that Chinese travellers can have the same experience abroad. With a multi-million dollar investment behind brand development, HUALUXE will follow IHG’s managed operating model, similar to its other IHG brands currently operating in China and will be supported with brand development and marketing funds in the first few years.

Introducing Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel and Spa

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel and Spa opens in May 2012 suspended over the Bay of Salerno on Italy’s iconic Amalfi Coast. The hotel, formerly a 17th Century monastery, will consist of 20 guest rooms and suites – all with sea views – a restaurant, a heated infinity pool, stunning landscaped gardens spread over five tiers, a historic herb garden and a private 12th Century Chapel. There will also be a spectacular and unique spa that has been created within a labyrinth of historic monastic spaces and outdoor pavilions. The hotel stands along the famed Blue Highway near the quaint fishing village of Conca dei Marini and is located close to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. It is built directly into the side of the cliff with the floors connected by a glass front elevator allowing panoramic views of the hotel’s gardens and the sea.

The hotel is owned by American Bianca Sharma, who by chance caught sight of the property whilst travelling the area in 1999. She was immediately captivated, in part because the building offered one of the most dramatic locations in the world. After acquiring the building she set about working closely with a local team of architects, engineers and historical authorities for over ten years to transform the former monastery into a luxury hotel and spa whilst maintaining the integrity of the building.

Given its heritage, the building has been respectfully restored to honour its roots and traditions. Whilst the exterior and the interior maintain the asceticism of the property, the style within is offset by warm and inviting contemporary design.

Suites are decorated with historical photographs of the area and the monastery itself, adding to the sense of history. The vaulted ceilings and arched windows of the nun’s rooms and refectory have been carefully preserved and are cleverly linked together with en suite bathrooms to create truly contemporary spaces. The grounds feature a heated infinity pool, stunning landscaped gardens, and a private herb garden, all situated over five terraced levels.

All rooms and suites have flat screen TVs, complimentary high-speed internet access, mini-bar and room service. Each is named after one of the herbs grown in the hotel’s herb garden and feature antiques hand-picked by the owner herself, sourced locally from Santa Rosa and from her travels across Italy.

Attached to the hotel by tiered gardens is the hotel’s own private 12th century chapel, making the perfect wedding venue. For a completely unique venue the entire property is available for exclusive hire, turning into a palatial Italian villa for guests personal use.

Autograph Collection Adds Three Hotels in the Southeast Region of the United States

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Autograph Collection has announced the addition of The Saint, Blue Moon and Winter Haven hotels to its growing lineup. Each of the hotels is the first to join Autograph Collection in their respective cities: The Saint Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, and both the Blue Moon Hotel and Winter Haven hotels in Miami Beach, Fla. With these properties, the collection has accumulated an impressive 32 hotels in the portfolio since its launch in 2010, with plans to include up to 60 properties by the end of 2012 in various key markets worldwide. The Saint Hotel
After an extensive $45 million renovation, and just in time for Mardi Gras, The Saint recently reopened its doors on February 9th as the first Autograph Collection hotel in Louisiana. Selected to join the collection based on its notable architectural and historical significance, the hotel was previously known as the historic 103-year old Audubon Building in the world famous French Quarter, reminiscent of early 20th century New Orleans which gave way to the birth of jazz.

Ideally located two blocks away from the early jazz clubs frequented by legendary performers, such as Louis Armstrong, the 166-room hotel features interiors decorated with large black and white photographic murals of the early 1900s, and exposed brick and bright blue and white deco style décor. Its restaurant, Sweet Olive, provides a mélange of reinvented Southern culinary classics, including Rabbit Jambalaya and Wild Boar Rillette. True to its jazz roots, The Saint also includes a jazz club called the Burgundy Bar, with a rooftop bar slated to open in the spring.

Winter Haven Hotel & Blue Moon Hotel
As of early April, the iconic Winter Haven Hotel & legendary Blue Moon Hotel will be the first properties to join the Autograph Collection in Miami Beach, Fla. The Winter Haven Hotel, initially designed by acclaimed architect Albert Anis, the property was first unveiled on Ocean Drive in 1939. The oceanfront hotel’s exclusive location lends to guests’ unique experience of the most famous and energetic street on South Beach, immersing them in the elegance of the Art Deco movement of days gone by. The hotel’s interiors are nautical inspired, an ode to the majestic ocean liners of the era, with a blend of modern touches, including terrazzo flooring, glass blocks, chrome finished railings and a grand cruise ship-inspired staircase. Winter Haven’s bar also exudes a mid-century “martini joint” vibe, with black rounded marble top tables, original wood fascia and stainless steel foot rails. In early 2012, Winter Haven will also undergo restoration while ensuring that the historical integrity of the property is conserved.

Blue Moon Hotel is an intimate boutique sanctuary replete with 1930s charm. The hotel is tucked away on popular Collins Avenue and is a seamless combination of Art Deco and Mediterranean influences coupled with modern and sophisticated touches. Conveniently located just a few steps away from the beach, boutiques and bistros on Ocean Drive, the iconic hotel remains a key staple in South Beach.

The Blue Moon Hotel is a composite of two former hotels – the Lafayette and Les Suites – and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. To ensure the historical attributes of the property are preserved, the hotel will undergo restoration efforts in early 2012.

Handmade Organic Mattress is Latest Celebrity Must Have Item

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

There are many reasons why celebrities such as Maggie Gyllenhaal, Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow have chosen to buy from innovative mattress manufacturer Naturalmat. It could be that A-listers adore the low carbon footprint, the overall healthier sleeping environment, not to mention their mattresses provide excellent levels of both support and comfort. However it’s the renewable materials contained within Naturalmat mattresses that really makes them so appealing. The most luxurious adult mattress within the Naturalmat range is the Cashmere. Coir (coconut fibre) is one of this mattress’s prime components. Naturalmat use certified organic coir from the only certified organic coconut plantation in the world. Coir fibre is incredibly resilient and fantastically springy, making it a perfect natural component for mattresses. It also ensures unbeatable airflow and excellent support to promote healthy and natural sleep.

The organic lambswool used within the Cashmere comes from Soil Association certified farms in Devon, Dorset and Somerset. It is processed on the edge of Dartmoor using water from the River Dart, which is then recycled back into the river afterwards. Naturalmat add an extract of essential oils during this process, which includes lavender, lemon and eucalyptus. These essential oils render the wool anti dust mite and anti moth. Wool is a natural fire retardant so The Cashmere is chemical free. Wool has brilliant natural properties of ventilation and insulation, as well as being wonderfully soft and fluffy.

The natural latex layer within this mattress comes directly from the milky sap of the rubber tree. Once the sap is collected, it is pumped full of air to create a foamy white froth before it is set in a large oven. The natural elasticity of the rubber gives the latex layer fantastic properties of enduring support. The open cell structure of latex foam makes it naturally antimicrobial, ensuring no dust mites can live in it, so it remains naturally breathable and totally hypoallergenic.

Finally cashmere completes the lavish list of internal layers by adding soft spring and comfort to the mattress. Cashmere is incredibly sumptuous and like wool it is a fantastic insulator.

All Naturalmat cotton covers are treated with a natural anti bed bug treatment which is derived from geraniol (citrus based). In tests this revolutionary process has proven to eliminate any bed bug that comes into contact with the cover within 72 hours. Cotton also has a unique ability to ventilate and wick away humidity and perspiration enabling the body to keep an even temperature.

Better feedback thanks to Wilton Carpets

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Tufted and woven carpets from Wilton Carpets Commercial now adorn the bedrooms and corridors of accommodation facilities at the Cranfield Management Development Centre, regarded as one of the best conference centres in the country. Following on from its previous installation of woven axminster in the corridors of another building within the Cranfield site, Wilton Carpets Commercial was asked to tender for the replacement of the corridor carpet of the hotel accommodation, which often provides rest and working facilities for top executives in its 186 bedrooms.

Cranfield Management Development Centre, comments: “At Cranfield Conference Centre we always strive to create a home away from home and each of our bedrooms has been designed to support the needs of the business executive, offering comfort and quality. In our recent refurbishment we wanted a carpet design that would complement the retro feel to impress, but not overwhelm our guests.”

For the heavy-duty requirements of corridors, designs from the FastTrack axminster collection were specified in a durable nine-row construction and in a high performance 80% wool 20% nylon mix. Originally specifying a polypropylene fibre for the bedrooms, Cranfield Management Development Centre instead selected the appearance retention and performance benefits of tufted wool-rich carpet preferring the design and quality offered by Wilton Carpets.A total of 1,500 square metres of 42oz weight carpet were installed within bedrooms.

Cranfield Conference Centre chose re-coloured Filament and Parallel designs from the FastTrack collection for the 600 square metres of corridors, while in the bedrooms the tufted bespoke linear stripe utilised a shared colour palette to create a sense of continuity throughout the building. Feedback to the carpet has been very positive, with a higher than normal ‘10’ rating in customer feedback in design and comfort.

    Miniview: Legoland Windsor Resort

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Writing a review of an hotel that hasn’t officially opened is a tricky one as for some areas you have to fill in the missing pieces; stealing glances at site plans and looking at the snagging sheets pinned to guest room doors to get a sense of what it will look like when complete. (Note: the hotel was visited on the 21st February)Whilst the new development of the Legoland Windsor Resort is nearly finished, there are areas of the hotel which are still very much a construction site (the spa area scheduled to open later in the year and some of the guest rooms and bathrooms) but these are progressing quickly.

With occupancy of the hotel at capacity for its opening weekend (17th March) there is every confidence it will be ready and the excitement of its debut is already building with the training of new staff, groups huddled in quiet areas of the lobby and restaurant discussing operations and health and safety.

Merlin Entertainments Group, who operates other properties such as Alton Towers and Chessington World of Adventures, has added another string to its bow of themed hotels in the UK. With each hotel that opens under the Group’s name, the theming is stepped up a gear and the Legoland Windsor Resort does not fail to disappoint children and adults alike.

Undeniably created with children in mind, the specialist in-house design team at Merlin Entertainments Group have created mayhem – a wonderful, giddy experience for the children as they are encouraged to build, explore and enjoy so many of the hotel’s secrets from ‘whoopie cushion’ carpets to codes you have to crack in your room to unlock a toy.

There are some refuge areas for adults such as the Skyline bar and the separate conference area for the business market, providing some respite from the dominant primary colours of the hotel scheme but with subtle Lego influences still in its design.

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Topsham based mattress manufacturer Naturalmat were honoured at the 19th Devon Environmental Business Initiative (DEBI) Awards Ceremony, which took place at the Met Office. Naturalmat were selected as finalists in the Environmental Goods and Services Large Business Category by the DEBI judges. Television presenter Dick Strawbridge was the star attraction at the event and presented Naturalmat with their deserving certificate, as well as a bottle of locally produced sparkling wine from Pebblebed Vineyards. Naturalmat are an innovative company who create handmade organic mattresses from natural fibres and fully sustainable materials, some of the organic components used include coir, cotton and Soil Association certified organic wool. Naturalmat mattresses are supportive, anti bed bug, anti dust mite and hypoallergenic. Naturalmat customers are able to get the best night’s sleep possible, as not only are their mattresses incredibly comfortable, but customers can also rest with a clear conscience knowing that their mattress has been created with minimal environmental impact.

One of the key components within Naturalmat mattresses is coir, which comes from the only certified organic coir plantation in the world. All coconuts used are grown organically and in an environmentally responsible way. No pesticides or chemical fertilisers are used, as Naturalmat prefer to use organic compost to encourage a sustainable farming program.
The organic lambswool used within mattresses is cleaned on the edge of Dartmoor using water from the River Dart. The water is then filtered, cleaned and returned to the river without any environmental impact. The dirt is washed out of the wool and then goes into an anaerobic digester to make organic compost.

‘We strive to be great ambassadors for the county and are thrilled to receive recognition from DEBI. The judges have seen that we create a handmade high value product that has been made with minimal energy resources and environmental impact. We have taken extra time and effort to create a sustainable item and this has ultimately led to our success at this ceremony. We are very proud of our Devon roots and strive to promote this beautiful county to the best of our ability to our customers located all over the world,’ said Marie Taylor Naturalmat’s Online Marketing Manager.

Whitbread powers up green hospitality drive

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Premier Inn is leading the hospitality industry to become more sustainable with the opening of another green hotel and restaurant at Camborne in Cornwall. The 65-bedroom hotel and 210-cover restaurant is the tenth sustainable purpose-built hotel developed by Whitbread and features an array of sustainable technologies including 10 kW solar photovoltaic panels mounted onto the hotel roof to offset four electric car charging ports at the site – a major innovation for a budget hotel chain.

Chris George, Head of Energy and Environment for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said: “Camborne is a clear example of Whitbread using its expertise to lead the UK hospitality industry to become more sustainable. Our intention with the project was to learn from our existing sustainable hotels at Burgess Hill in West Sussex and Tamworth in Staffordshire and design an even more impressive and sustainable product. We have done that and demonstrated, once again, that green hotel design is possible within the mainstream market and does not have to mean ‘boutique’ or ‘expensive’.

The sustainable Premier Inn at Camborne incorporates the following energy and water saving features:

    – Earth’s natural energy – ground source heat pumps use the earth’s natural energy to cool and heat rooms and provide hot water throughout the hotel. 70% of the hotels hot water, heating and cooling will be provided in this way
    – Grey water –lowflow showerheads have been installed in the guest bathrooms and the toilets are flushed with recycled water from showers and baths to cut down on freshwater use
    – Clever lighting – very low energy LED lighting is used in the hotel reception, bars and restaurant areas. Corridor and stairwell lighting is controlled by presence detectors and energy saving key card switches are provided in the guest bedrooms to prevent energy wastage
    – Building that breathes – fresh air is delivered to each room, capturing the energy from the air it replaces
    – High levels of insulation – manufactured from naturally occurring and recycled materials are used in the walls to create exceptionally efficient thermal and acoustic insulation
    – Timber flooring – sustainable-sourced certified timber used as a replacement for concrete ground floors. This method saved over 100 tonnes of concrete compared to a similarly sized building constructed to current industry standards
    – High efficiency kitchen equipment – has been installed to reduce energy wasted during cooking and refrigeration
    – Turning natural light into energy – 10 kW photovoltaic cells located on the hotel roof that offset four electric car charging points located in the car park

Finely finished woodwork and polished metalwork contrast with rough-cut stone creates an interesting juxtaposition that is both luxurious and relaxing.

The spacious guestrooms and villas feature sweeping views of the sea, marina and surrounding mangroves. Designed as relaxing island sanctuaries, the guest rooms evoke a sophisticated and relaxing “guest quarters by the sea” environment. The spaces are appointed with an eclectic collection of fine furnishings and artifacts collected from around the world. The creamy neutral color palette is accentuated by local raw silks and tonal damasks with vibrant, rich colors that add dimension to the room. The high-gloss wood and polished metal finishes contrast with the use of natural materials that reflect the region’s plush and unique local surroundings. Elements of nautical whimsy, such as yacht cleats for hanging clothing, add character and familiarity. The contemporary bathrooms are appointed with local materials, including indigenous “woven” stone tiles, onyx vanity tops and Macore wood. A generously proportioned shower and contemporary soaking tub provide stunning views outdoors.

Fameed Khalique introduces Chella luxury outdoor fabrics to the UK

    150 150 Daniel Fountain

Fameed Khalique, specialist in innovative and inspiring surface materials introduces a pioneering collection of luxury outdoor fabrics by Chella Textiles to the UK. This outstanding and exceptionally durable collection contains the industry’s first solution-dyed acrylic fabrics guaranteed not to fade and to withstand harsh treatment from sun, rain, freezing temperatures and wear and tear.

    The technical bit…
Whilst most fabrics are created from fibres that are initially colourless and then dyed, these solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are created when a liquid acrylic solution is combined with precisely-determined colours before the coloured liquid is transformed into fibres.

    The fabrics are unique…
These fabrics marry technological innovation with style with over 200 traditional and contemporary designs available, including Solids & Textures, Stripes, Sheers and Patterns. Despite being made out of acrylic, the fabrics recreate natural fibre constructions like linen, velvet and chenille so they look and feel astonishingly natural and are supremely soft to the touch. The fabrics offer something new, beautiful and of utmost quality for both residential and commercial projects, from hotel suites, terraces, pool and spa areas, bathrooms, family rooms and nurseries.

All fabrics are guaranteed not to fade when exposed to sunlight or attract mildew, meaning they can be left out all year round, even bleach won’t affect the solution-dye colour and all fabrics are machine-washable. Custom bespoke patterns and colours are available upon request from Fameed Khalique.

    Finishing touches…
Woven from the same solution-dyed acrylic yarns, the Finishing Touch Trim Collection is designed to withstand the elements come rain or shine. The collection is comprised of seven styles of braid, tape, fringe and tie-backs of hand-carved mahogany and opalized quartz, which complement every colour palette.
