Osmo UK Polyx®-Oil Anti-Slip eliminates the possibility of any slips, trips and falls without compromising on the flooring appearance…

Wooden flooring is a highly attractive material for commercial and residential environments, but like any hard flooring material, it can become slippery when wet, resulting in a slip hazard where accidents are all too easy in these situations. Wilton Carpers' take on tartan

Wilton Carpets launches a fast and fresh take on tartan

800 466 Hamish Kilburn

As Hotel Designs this month lays down the topic of flooring and carpets, Recommended Supplier Wilton Carpets has just launched a new carpet range.

As the eyes on the world focus on Scotland this month for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Wilton Carpets is in the spirit of things and has released its take on tartan with the Nova Scotia collection, a wool-rich woven axminster carpet that’s available within just 14 days.

A tartan design modernised with a distressed, vintage feel, Nova Scotia is released as Wilton Carpets continues to boost its Ready to Go axminster programme. Available in nine colourways drawn from the new Creations palette, Nova Scotia gives new meaning to a classic design, ensuring it works in today’s modern hospitality and leisure venues.

Helping to disguise dirt between cleans, this distressed tartan design is perfectly suited for hotels, golf clubs, restaurants, pubs, bars and hotels looking for a heavy contract carpet delivered in under two weeks.

“Tartan is undoubtedly a timeless pattern that’s always in fashion in traditional hotels, bars and restaurants, but these establishments also need to reflect a modern, thoughtful approach to the presentation of the interior,” said Damian Roscoe, head of creative at Wilton Carpets. “So, we’ve re-imagined this enduring look by adding a distressed, worn effect in colourways from our Creations palette that includes the latest popular colours. Nova Scotia is a great way to add an instant sense of heritage with a modern edge in a carpet right off the loom.”

Colourways include the graphite and moss of Glencoe Mood, the rust red of Lochniver Breeze and steely blues of Cromarty Bay. Woven in Wiltshire from a tough blend of 80 per cent wool and 20 per cent nylon that provides the performance and appearance retention needed for busy establishments, Nova Scotia comes 3.66m wide.

Helping to disguise dirt between cleans, this distressed tartan design is perfectly suited for hotels, golf clubs, restaurants, pubs, bars and hotels looking for a heavy contract carpet delivered in under two weeks. As part of the Ready to Go collection, all Nova Scotia colourways are available with no minimum order quantity.

Bisque introduces rustic finishes to Classic collection

800 613 Hamish Kilburn

Bisque, the UK’s first ever luxury radiator brand, has unveiled two new distinctive finishes for spring 2018, Rustique and Rose Copper. Both styles are produced using an oxidation technique, creating a truly authentic finish. These bespoke designs are made to order and are available exclusively on Bisque’s Classic collection of radiators and from its newly opened showroom in Islington.

The organic Rustique finish is not simply a paint effect but is created by spraying iron metal over a base coat. This is followed by a water-based solution, which produces a rust patina, making the result individual every time – similar to the brand’s much loved Arteplano. The Classic is primed, coated and lacquered throughout the process to ensure you achieve an authentic ‘rust’ finish of paramount quality.

Next up is the Rose Copper finish, which contains genuine copper and is finished with a matt lacquer, to prevent further tarnishing. This ultimately maintains its gorgeous rose colour and beautiful glow.
The Classic is by far Bisque’s most popular design and today offers a variety of models in various and sizes and styles. In addition to thirty-eight stock sizes, Bisque also offers a vast range of bespoke size options and can colour match to popular paint ranges such as Farrow & Ball and Little Greene.

In Conversation with: Fabrics experts at Mitre Linen

800 533 Hamish Kilburn

Concluding our month of putting Fabrics in the spotlight, editor of Hotel Designs Hamish Kilburn sat down with the general manager of Mitre Linen, Kate Gough, to explore more around trends and how the company is moving with modern times…

Personally, I’m a soft pillow kind of man – take from that what you will. My colleague to the left of me on the other hand disagrees entirely and insists that without a hard pillow in a hotel he will not sleep a wink. A hotel that claims to be luxury that does not offer a good night’s sleep is not somewhere guests will rush back to check in to after they’ve checked out. Therefore, keeping the pillow options open to all and investing in good linen will go far to ensuring your guests have a comfortable stay.

As technology continues to evolve, and while interior trends flow into the duvet, I sat down with linen experts Mitre Linen to put the topic into perspective.

Hamish Kilburn: How has the company evolved with technology moving forwards?

Kate Gough: Over the years, we have built a reputation for quality and reliability that has earned us the honour of HM The Queen’s Royal Warrant, which we have proudly held since 1955. Over the past 70 years, we have seen many changes within the industry, including major technological advances which have had a significant impact on many areas of our business, however, our key focus remains the same – offering exceptional customer service.

We work as hard as ever to ensure that anyone who contacts the Mitre team is left feeling delighted. Our friendly team, based in Merthyr Tydfil, in the heart of the Welsh valleys, has always been at the end of the phone to take orders, or offer advice and support to our customers. For those who prefer to, online orders can be placed quickly and easily via our new website, with a convenient Fast Order option available for those in a hurry, while those seeking advice or with product queries can take advantage of our new online LiveChat feature, which is available Monday-Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm.

We have created a selection of handy online Mitre Guides which is easily accessed via our website, helping our customers to make the right product choices for their needs. We also give online insight into the latest industry trends with our regularly updated Mitre Articles, which offer valuable advice from our experts, on topics such as the effective use of colour in hotel rooms, and tips on how to create a hygienic sleep environment.

The average person produces one to two pints of sweat every night

HK: What are your thoughts on the pillow menu?

KG: The right pillow is essential to a comfortable night’s sleep – pillow menus are easy to create and can be as simple as offering the option of either a hard and soft pillow, depending on a guest’s personal preference. Mitre Linen offers a wide variety of pillow styles and constructions available to suit the desires of any sleeper, and we are happy to guide you in your choices, making it easy for your business to provide the perfect pillow menu.

Our best-selling Comfort Palace Pillow features Quallofil extra life fibre which keeps it thick and plump, whilst ensuring a longer lifespan. The flame-retardant pillow is highly resistant to flattening, maintaining its shape after every use whilst retaining its soft profile, ensuring it’s quick and easy to achieve a welcoming bed. The Comfort Palace Pillow makes a great soft option for a pillow menu.

The Comfort Ultraloft Pillow would be ideal as a firm option for a pillow menu. With a Hollowfibre fill, its thick, plump design has a weight of 850g. Covered in durable polycotton, it’s designed to last through regular heavy-duty use, and is flame retardant.

We would also recommend that a pillow menu include at least one microfibre option, in order to offer the comfortable feel of feather and down without the risk of allergy. Mitre Linen’s Luxury Microfibre pillows are available in soft and firm variants, have 100% cotton covers with a 233 thread count, and conform perfectly to the head and neck to offer soft and comfortable support.

For further information, see our detailed pillow guide.

HK: How often should hotels replace bed linen?

KG: Bed linen such as duvet covers and sheets should be replaced at the first sign of wear and tear. Within two years, one third of a pillow’s weight is made up of dead skin, dust mites, oil and dirt and considering that the average person produces one to two pints of sweat every night, then pillows and duvets should be regularly replaced.  Protectors are invaluable to prolong the life of mattresses, duvets and pillows. Not only do they provide a more hygienic sleeping environment for your guests as they can be regularly washed, but they also extend the life of bedding which is a significant investment for a business.

HK: What are your thoughts on colourful bed sheets in the hotel guestroom?

KG: Our white satin polycotton range is our biggest seller, and whilst recent Mitre Connects* hotelier feedback confirmed that white bedlinen is perennially popular, we did note quite a few comments requesting a larger range of good quality colourful bed linen. In response to this valuable feedback we have added colour options into our Egyptian Cotton Range – our gorgeous 100% cotton percale bedlinen is now also available in ruby red, raisin, blush pink, lead grey and saffron yellow, as well as our ever popular white.

HK: What advice would you give to hotels when it comes to caring for bed linen?

KG: Freshly laundered, pristine, smooth and crease free bedlinen always rates highly for guests when they stay at a hotel so for those who launder on site, here are some care tips:

Always wash cotton bedlinen before use, at 50°C or 60°C. Expect 4-8 per cent shrinkage (Mitre Linen sizing allows for this). Hot iron when slightly damp to give a crisp finish. Don’t bleach, as this will reduce the life of the product. Soak stained bedding in water if immediate laundering is not possible.

Wash polycotton bedlinen at 50°C. Use a detergent intended for colours (to avoid colour fade due to OBA build up). A light iron is suggested.

For further advice on laundry care, please refer to our Linen Care Guide at www.mitrelinen.co.uk/care-guide.

Bisque balances sexy and sophisticated in black

800 524 Hamish Kilburn

Bisque – the UK’s first ever designer heating brand and pioneer of innovative radiator design – has unveiled a suave and sophisticated matt black finish to join its existing range of colour options.

Once considered gloomy or gothic, matt black styles are enjoying something of a renaissance

The new matt black option has a soft, sateen finish for that extra-luxurious finishing touch. It is now available on a selection of Bisque’s most popular models, including its iconic school-style Classic and timeless Deline towel rail.

Once considered gloomy or gothic, matt black styles are enjoying something of a renaissance thanks to leading interior designers such as Abigail Ahern incorporating moody colour palettes into interior schemes. Matt black, along with shades of dark grey and anthracite, can be stylish and stimulating as opposed to oppressing. Create a focal point in a hallway, living room, bedroom or dining room with one of Bisque’s general purpose radiators, or co-ordinate your chosen model with your paint or accessories for a more mature look.

Black radiator in bathroom

Moreover, Bisque’s matt black Deline has been introduced following the increasing popularity of coloured baths and brassware in bathrooms. Offering customers an eye-catching alternative to traditional white sanitaryware and polished chrome, matt black finishes create a striking contrast in this otherwise neutral space.

Bisque’s latest colourway joins an already extensive array of colours and finishes in the brand’s repertoire – from pretty pastels and bold brights to metallics, bare metal lacquers and even textured quartz finishes. It offers its customers an unrivalled choice, thanks to its bespoke colour-match service when only a precise shade will do.

Bisque is continuously working behind the scenes to bring its customers the most exciting styles available.

Understanding lighting technology with Hamilton Litestat

800 349 Hamish Kilburn

Following on from Hotel Designs’ Spotlight On’ feature of Technology last month, editor Hamish Kilburn sat down with the marketing manager of Hamilton Litestat to explore lighting trends, clever ways to illuminate the guestroom and how products are changing…

Last month, Hotel Designs lit up the conversation around in-hotel technology and where trends are heading in the near future of hotel design. One conversation that came up time and time again was the idea of designers using lighting in more savvy ways to create a certain ambiance. With this in mind, I decided to ask the experts at Hamilton Litestat who are ahead of the curve and in-the-know when it comes to the future of lighting technology in the guestroom and beyond.

Hamish Kilburn: How has lighting recently become more of a focus in guestroom design?

Gavin Williams: Lighting has always played a significant role in the guest experience of a hotel. First impressions count and from the moment a guest sees the hotel building and walks into reception, lighting is being used to create a statement about the hotel.

Lighting control certainly doesn’t need to be complicated

Within a hotel’s guestrooms, lighting control provides important functionality. In the week, many guests are business people who need to use their rooms as a place of work during the day. Then, in the evenings – as well as weekend guests – they want to use the space to relax. Lighting control transforms these spaces between the different functional requirements, easing from bright work-appropriate lighting into softer mood lighting at the touch of a button or swipe of a finger.

This also applies to the function rooms, restaurants and bars within a hotel. The atmosphere – and therefore the lighting requirements – for breakfast is very different to an evening meal setting, so lighting control can support this space transformation too.

We take the brief and turn it into the desired solution with no headaches

HK: I think a lot of designers shudder at the thought of lighting control in the guestroom. Can you put their minds at ease by telling us what makes Hamilton’s products user friendly?

GW: Lighting control certainly doesn’t need to be complicated. From a designer’s perspective, all they need to do is tell Hamilton what effects they want to achieve, and our team will deliver a pre-programmed system to suit. Designers don’t need to know the ins and outs of how the system works, that’s Hamilton’s job! We take the brief and turn it into the desired solution with no headaches.

Our solutions offer a range of effects, so designers should consider the result they’re after and whether they’d like dimming control, the ability to mix light and colour with DMX options, or the ability to set scenes. If they’re unsure, they can visit Hamilton’s showrooms in Bristol or at the Mere facilities to talk through the options and see demonstrations so they have the confidence that the system will deliver their lighting ideas.

And, even more importantly, our smart lighting control solutions make things simple for guests too. They can be controlled by simple yet elegant button switches that are available in a range of designs, easy-to-use glass control panels or via an accessible app on a smart device.

We’ve found exhibitions such as Decorex, The Independent Hotel Show and the recently rebranded SLEEP+EAT particularly helpful for keeping abreast of the latest trends

HK: Do you keep track of trends, and what lighting products are most popular for hotels?

GW: Yes, we make sure we take notice of the lighting trends within the hotel sector, and the general design trends. Both are very important to our business. Our smart lighting control solutions can help achieve these looks, but as we also design and manufacture decorative wiring accessories, we offer switched plates and sockets with the latest on-trend finishes.

We’ve found exhibitions such as Decorex, The Independent Hotel Show and the recently rebranded SLEEP+EAT particularly helpful for keeping abreast of the latest trends. We exhibit at these shows and have both hoteliers and designers visit our stand, so we often find ourselves discussing current trends and themes that require lighting control. We also participate in the Hotel Designs networking events, which we find very useful. Hamilton’s solution is very flexible and can be programmed to deliver more complex solutions as and when new trends and requirements come in, but we’re also always happy to build a bespoke system to meet a specific design brief.

HK: Can you explain the creative elements with regards to what goes into designing a new product?

GW: Products are bought, not sold, so new product development must be driven by talking to customers and uncovering what is missing from the current market offering, or what is not working with existing products on the shelves. In terms of the crucial elements when designing a new product, function and form has always been important to Hamilton and balancing these two elements is something we pride ourselves on. We ensure our products deliver smooth, seamless and effective functionality in a product that’s attractive and well-designed.

In a hotel, the bulk of any lighting control system will be installed out of view in the hotel’s hub room. It’s only the control plates that are visible in guestrooms so, typically, a designer wants to create a special control plate, one that has a unique shape or finish to coordinate with other wiring accessories in the design scheme.

The majority of Hamilton’s products are manufactured in our factory in Bristol

As pioneers in the manufacture of decorative plates for switches, sockets and lighting controls, Hamilton has accrued 50 years’ experience in meeting the specifications of designers and hoteliers. We simply need some guidance on the function, style and finish that’s being sought, and we will interpret these wishes to provide a suitable solution. The Hamilton design team can offer 3D CAD drawings so that customers can view product designs from different angles and perspectives to ensure it meets the most exacting requirements. This also shortens the lead time from design to product sampling. We’re also happy to create highly finished sample prototypes for a designer to present to their client to help them buy into their design ideas.

HK: How are Hamilton Litestat products made?

Image caption: Gavin Williams

GW: The majority of Hamilton’s products are manufactured in our factory in Bristol: we’re a family-run business producing British-quality solutions. Our production facility includes complete CNC, Laser and Water Jet Cutting capability. In addition to our standard selection of finishes, we can provide bespoke premium finishes, including PVD, in a choice of finishes such as Nickel or Antique Gold. If required, we can print text or graphics on plates by Laser Etch, Pad Printing or Engraving. In short, it’s a mixture and both machine and hand finishing to ensure our customers get a quality product both in terms of design and manufacture.

Roca’s new collection takes inspiration from the past

800 566 Hamish Kilburn

The new Carmen collection from Roca speaks to the past as well as the future. Its beautiful nostalgic design is based on a classic Roca collection from the 1940s and has been launched to celebrate the company’s centenary.

“Over the last few years, the trend for vintage and classical design has continued to grow,” comments Alan Dodds, Managing Director of Roca UK. “From the research we have conducted, vintage means more than just antiques, it is about classic and timeless design that is still relevant today. That is why we have introduced Carmen, it is a collection that is routed in the past but has all the attributes to complement a modern bathroom.”

Carmen may be vintage looking in design, but it features the latest in technology and material innovations. For example, the WC is rimless for greater hygiene and easier cleaning as well as being fitted with a water distributor that provides an improved flushing performance. The seat cover has been manufactured with SUPRALIT®, a new exclusive resin registered by Roca. This is more durable (offering greater resistance to chemical agents and to discolouration), more hygienic (four times less porous material) and easier to clean (surface with soft and rounded angles).

The collection includes a close coupled WC, basin and pedestal, with a complementary furniture range and mirror also available.

Roca has also developed a range of Carmen brassware to complete the product family. Just like the bathroom suite, the brassware has an authentic period design whilst incorporating innovative technology.  The Carmen brassware collection features the latest generation of flow limiters that guarantee a 5l/m flow, regardless of the system pressure. As well as its ceramic disc operation, the Carmen taps has the Roca Evershine electroplating process applied for anticorrosion, lifetime brightness and anti-scratching.

Along with its authentic Roca design and the latest innovations built into the ceramics and furniture, Carmen gives real value for money.

A new urban landscape from Wilton Carpets

800 635 Hamish Kilburn

Urban is the latest ready-to-go carpet range by Wilton Carpets…

The latest ‘Ready to Go’ carpet range from Wilton Carpets captures echoes of urban decay and regeneration for hospitality environments seeking fresh takes on modern carpet design.

Urban Contour, available in five colourways from the brand-new Creations palette, reveals an abstract multi-tonal base through a diffracted interconnecting and spiralling hexagon motif. Urban Terrain takes a similar background, dominant beneath a heavily broken grid in a design reflecting the decaying, rusted and Verdigris surfaces so familiar in the city landscape; also available in five colourways from the Creations palette.

In colourways such as Burnt Copper, Gun Metal, Fjord, Granite, Karma and Demerara, Urban owes much of its modern feel to the latest Ready to Go colour palette. “We’ve developed the Creations palette to provide complementing and contrasting colours perfect for use in hotels, entertainment and leisure venues, civic spaces and heritage buildings,” explained Damian Roscoe, head of creative at Wilton Carpets. “Urban is among the first Ready to Go range to embrace its use and shows just how this dynamic palette can bring a broad scope in colourways perfect for today’s design-demanding venues.”

Woven on axminster looms in Wiltshire, Urban is crafted from 80 per cent pure new wool and 20 per cent nylon to provide an affordable, long-lasting blend in an enduring eight-row quality perfect throughout demanding public areas. It joins Havana and Nova Scotia as Ready to Go ranges featuring the brand-new Creations palette.

As with all ‘Ready to Go’ collections, Urban is available on a 14-day fast-turnaround with no minimum order quantity.

XSquare console vanity unit in White Satin Matt, with console in Dark Walnut, DuraSquare above counter basin with C.1 tap fitting (Design by Kurt Merki Jr.)

XSquare from Duravit: contemporary elegance and comfort in the bathroom

1024 708 Hamish Kilburn

The XSquare bathroom range from Duravit impresses with its contemporary – yet elegant design, high-quality surfaces and materials and striking chrome profiles…

In conjunction with designer Kurt Merki Jr., Duravit has created a furniture range that is specially attuned to the design of the contemporary DuraSquare washbasins. The striking feature is the quadrant-shaped chrome profile edging the furniture. On the floor-standing model, the transition to the leg frame is absolutely seamless. The chrome profile accentuates the edges of both variants. It continues along the corner radius of the washbasin, creating harmony and a striking independence.

Combined with cupboards, mirrors and mirror-cabinet solutions from the range, also designed with the clearly visible chrome profile, luxurious washing areas can be created featuring an elegantly contemporary furnishing style.

Image caption: XSquare is suitable for small bathrooms

XSquare offers various options and combinations and perfectly matches the current DuraSquare, Vero Air, ME by Starck and P3 Comforts ceramic series. High- quality and uniform interior design ideas can be realised, including free-standing or built-in bathtubs, toilets, tap fittings, shower trays and accessories.

The sky’s the limit both in terms of the potential variants and also the choice of colours. The console washbasin vanity units are available in up to five different sizes (800-1600 mm) depending on the ceramics – also offering space for generous dual washbasin solutions. Compact versions round off the range for all manner of rooms and design requirements.

The selection of vanity units is extremely varied: up to seven different widths can be chosen for the DuraSquare, Vero Air, ME by Starck or P3 Comforts vanity units, depending on the series. The option of one or two drawers applies for all vanity units. These are fitted with high-quality drawer dividers in Maple or Walnut. The tall cabinet and semi-tall cabinet offer additional storage space in widths of 420 or 500 mm.

In total, 28 furniture finishes in décor matt or lacquer, satin-matt or high-gloss are available including three new special finishes: matt light blue, matt concrete grey and satin-matt aubergine – as well as the linen decor finish, which rounds off the wide colour range.

DuraSquare furniture basin, XSquare console vanity unit in Concrete Grey Matt, and XSquare mirror cabinet with C.1 basin mixer

Image caption: DuraSquare furniture basin, XSquare console vanity unit in Concrete Grey Matt, and XSquare mirror cabinet with C.1 basin mixer

Choosing a console panel in one of the cabinet colours or additionally in solid Natural Walnut, permits completely new and individual colour combinations for XSquare. Two or even three colours in combination with the lacquer finish, chrome profile, and console panel give rise to new contrasts and high-class design options. Handle-free fronts with push-to-open technology subtly highlight the elegant and inspiring overall picture. The new furniture programme has a striking effect, setting clearly structured accents in the room.

Duravit offers mirrors in eight widths (450 to 1,600 mm) and mirror cabinets in four widths (600 to 1,200 mm), each designed to coordinate perfectly with the furniture. The lateral chrome profile forms the edging, continuing the design language of the furniture. The mirror surface features the new control panel: it permits contact-free control of the main light (from 35 mm-wide lighting strips on the right and left), ambilight, and mirror heating via a sensor.

Additionally mirrors have a new, convenient switching function for coloured light: at a luminosity of more than 300 lux, the light colour can be continuously adjusted from 2,700 (warm light) to 6,500 kelvin (cold light). Warm light creates a pleasant atmosphere, while cold light is best for applying makeup. The memory function ensures that the required light colour and intensity do not need to be reset when used frequently. Similarly, the functional organisation of the inside of the mirror cabinets – with storage boxes, a board for accessories and a magnetic strip for small accessories, such as scissors or tweezers – is also new.

Modern Kaldewei bathroom

More than 60 years of Kaldewei

800 566 Hamish Kilburn

Kaldewei is one of the leading bathroom manufacturers, producing more than 50,000 ways of designing the modern shower…

The year was 1956 when bathroom specialist Kaldewei produced its first enamel shower – the same year, in fact, when Elvis Presley first entered the US music charts with ‘Heartbreak Hotel’.

More than 60 years later, Kaldewei today offers a choice of more than 50,000 product versions for floor-level shower design alone. With consumers becoming more discerning with regard to modern bathroom design, shower design has also changed. In this time, Kaldewei has not only helped to shape this development but has also been a driving force: with innovative and integrated shower systems that constantly set new standards in terms of design, functionality and ease of assembly.

The focus of Kaldewei product developments, both in the past and present, has been for the benefit of the end user and the ease of assembly for plumbers. Today, the enamelled shower surface segment alone takes in 10 model lines, five different surfaces, 34 colours and 57 different sizes across 50,000 exciting product versions made of superior Kaldewei steel enamel. From classic shower tray to absolutely flat floor-level enamelled shower surfaces, rectangular, square or specially shaped – Kaldewei delivers the right model of shower for bathrooms of every size and style, and, of course, the right assembly solution for every position in a room be it for a new-build or a refurbishment.

Award-winning design and unique material quality

Kaldewei has won more than 150 prestigious international awards to date. 48 of these awards were solely given to the company for the excellent design of its shower surfaces. The incomparable quality of superior Kaldewei steel enamel has been accentuating the design of Kaldewei showers for 60 years. New colours such as the company’s Coordinated Colours Collection, ensures that colours are perfectly coordinated with the bathroom floor.

Simple, flat, flexible: integrated system for every requirement

These days shower solutions must not only be persuasive in terms of design but, should also be able to respond flexibly to different installation situations. The trend for floor-level shower areas calls for systems that work well with minimal built heights. Kaldewei, not only meets the latest standards here, but actually sets them: with innovative combinations of shower surface, waste fitting and assembly systems that are easy and safe to install, allow extremely low built heights of just 61 millimetres and which, thanks to flexible variation options, can be integrated into every part of the room. The ESR II installation system and the KA 90 waste fitting, for instance, have demonstrated their practical benefits. Meticulously thought out down to the last detail and perfected over sixty years, complete solutions from Kaldewei offer flawless shower design.

Exterior of the showroom in Clerkenwell

Duravit opens flagship showroom in Clerkenwell, London

1024 724 Hamish Kilburn

Following Hotel Designs’ exclusive interview with Managing Director Martin Carroll, Duravit has opened its London flagship showroom…

Bathroom specialist Duravit has opened its new flagship showroom “Duravit London” in Clerkenwell – which is home to more creative business and architects per square mile than anywhere else in the world.

Members of the press were invited on June 20 to celebrate the pre-launch of Duravit London to learn more about the company’s a major investment and story of the brand’s sustained success within the UK market. Marking the latest chapter in the company’s 201-year history, this prestigious showroom at approx. 2,500 square feet, is situated at 36-42 Clerkenwell Road and officially opened yesterday.

inside the showroom

Visitors to the showroom will experience more than 20 Duravit series, including Duravit’s latest product innovations such as XSquare, a new furniture collection designed by Kurt Merki Jr. and the Brioso furniture series by Christian Werner. With the aim of bringing designer bathrooms to life, the London showroom will be a focal point for professionals to see first-hand the quality of Duravit’s innovative designs as well as working displays featuring the award-winning C.1 tap fitting series and the new DuraSystem® frames and SensoWash shower toilets.

To meet the demands of the growing project market and particularly specifications including Duravit, the showroom will act as a hub for ideas, inspiration and specialist technical advice, working in partnership with architects, designers and developers to ensure the correct Duravit products are specified. In addition, training and CPD seminars will form part of a continuous programme of professional development for the A&D community and retailers. The generous floor space also provides a comfortable space to meet and socialise with industry partners.

Internationally, Duravit London is ideally situated to collaborate with partners in the development of global projects, for example:

Opus Tower in Dubai by Zaha Hadid
One of Zaha Hadid’s remarkable designs is the Opus Tower in Dubai. Whereby the term “Tower“ is not strictly correct: the imaginative building complex seems like a cube that has been hollowed out in the centre. Every piece of furniture in the Opus Tower residential units were either designed or selected by her. Design by Philippe Starck and Duravit can be found in the bathrooms.

Morpheus Macau by Zaha Hadid
As one of her last works, the world-famous architect Zaha Hadid designed a unique monument. Melco Crown Entertainment’s 40-storey luxury hotel looks like an organic sculpture that looks both curiously and at the same time made for the legendary “City of Dreams” in Cotai, Macau. An icon that stands for the modern Macau and thus a new formulation of luxury.

Louvre at Abu Dhabi by Jean Nouvel
Jean Nouvel has created an architectural wonder in the desert. The architecture of the Louvre is modern but timeless, incorporating elements from Abu Dhabi’s architectural tradition. It includes designs by Duravit, thought up by Philippe Starck.

Consumers are also able to plan and discuss their requirements with a member of Duravit’s dedicated team who will be on hand to offer practical support, technical advice and specialist knowledge on choosing products for a future bathroom.

Viewings are by appointment only.

Martin Carroll

Seven minutes with the Managing Director of Duravit

1024 623 Hamish Kilburn

As Duravit opens its new Clerkenwell showroom, the editor of Hotel Designs, Hamish Kilburn, went behind the scenes to ask the Managing Director of Duravit, Martin Carroll, ‘why here’, ‘why now’ and ‘what’s next’…

Duravit has long been a leader in bathroom interior design, and the news of a swanky showroom unveiling in London’s Clerkenwell district – which is home to more creative business and architects per square mile than anywhere else in the world – the question is not ‘why’, but more ‘why now’?

Ahead of the official launch at the showroom, I went behind the brand’s polished exterior to speak with Managing Director of Duravit, Martin Carroll, to find out more about the showroom that everyone is talking about.

Hamish Kilburn: Why is Clerkenwell such an important location for you?

Martin Carroll: Duravit is a major player in innovative bathroom designs and the UK is one of the most important and best performing export markets.  Basing our London showroom in Clerkenwell will enable us to build closer relationships with the A&D community.

HK: How has the showroom been designed with the modern designer in mind?

MC: Duravit’s London showroom has been specifically designed to act as a hub for ideas, inspiration and technical advice.  It will act as a platform to showcase Duravit’s extensive product portfolio, including products by renowned designers such as: Philippe Starck, EOOS, Phoenix Design, Kurt Merki Jr. and Cecile Manz with the aim to make designer bathrooms come alive.

sink bason

HK: Other than the showroom, what’s new for Duravit?

MC: Duravit is launching a number of new product collections including Brioso and XSquare, which will be on display at the new Duravit London showroom.   Duravit continues to collaborate on new international projects and recent partnerships include the Zaha Hadid – Opus Tower in Dubai and the Jean Nouvel – Louvre @ Abu Dhabi.

HK: What key bathroom trends are you seeing at the moment?

MC: The introduction of a wider range of colours and textures in bathroom furniture over recent year’s means more frequently people are now injecting their own personality into bathroom designs and being adventurous with colour schemes.   Duravit’s L-Cube furniture series for example offers 30 different surface finishes so the scope for design freedom is practically unlimited.   The new Brioso furniture range, has a total of 15 finishes which are available in various decors, real wood veneers or lacquers (matt and gloss), including new, on-trend tones such as matt light blue and matt concrete grey as well as a linen-look decor finish.

Nordic colours continue to remain popular with the trend for Scandi style living appearing in bathroom designs. Minimal design, clear shapes cool and subtle colours, overall a reduced look with a few visual highlights can make a room feel individual.  The Luv bathroom collection, designed by Cecilie Manz embraces Nordic design and offers elegant console tables in soft Nordic shades including White, Taupe, Stone Grey, Light Blue and Night Blue.

Modern bathroom featuring Duravit

HK: What are the less common pitfalls designers sometimes fall into when designing a hotel bathroom?

MC: Space is often at a premium and the smaller the space, the more ingenious your bathroom planner has to be. Look at how you can make the very best use of the space available. Duravit offers numerous products which have been developed to cater for restricted spaces, compact washbasins, WC’s and furniture solutions are imperative.  Vanity units will hide unsightly pipe work and work well in small bathrooms as they provide valuable storage for guests.  Wall-hung products will keep the floor area clear, creating the illusion of more space and light reflective surfaces help make a small area feel bigger

HK: How would you say technology is changing in the bathroom?

MC: New technology is playing an increasingly important role in bathroom design, helping to make the bathroom a more comfortable place.   Ground breaking new materials characterised by consistent sustainability in terms of materials, processing and design are increasingly available for the bathroom.

Duravit has recently developed a new innovative method, called “c-bonded technology”. In the new “c-bonded” version, the furniture washbasin is connected almost seamlessly to the L-Cube vanity unit in a complex process. Thanks to the accurate and precise-fitting connecting technology, ceramic and furniture merge to form a single unit. However, the “c-bonded” solution does not just look and feel impressive: DuraCeram®, the patented special ceramic that actually makes this precision and moulding possible, is particularly wear-resistant.

Wilton Carperts creates beautiful carpets with creations

800 793 Hamish Kilburn

Featuring the Icelandic blue of Fjord, rich ochre of Demerara, rust tone of Burnt Copper and deep grey of Gun Metal; Creations is the latest colour palette now available on all Ready to Weave carpets and four brand-new Ready to Go ranges from Wilton Carpets.

A lively colourbank that has been developed to provide depth to accommodate hotel and hospitality interiors of all kinds, Creations encompasses functional, base tones and gorgeous radiating highlights. Bringing a sense of vitality and spirit to any traditional or modern design, the palette provides complement and contrast enough to create beautiful colourways on even the most complex of patterns.

Including of-the-moment grey – in three shades from base to highlight – and a boost to the blue spectrum, Creations is responding to the traction of these calm and cool tones in commercial interiors, as Damian Roscoe, head of creative, illuminates: “Our Ready to Weave palettes are the heart of many carpets crafted by our design team, whether for our stock Ready to Go ranges or recolouring library patterns for customers; so it’s important that they deliver commercially viable colourway options. We’ve introduced Creations as our response to a move away from richer, regal bases, giving depth in blues and greys to provide a strong foundation, with a flash of ultra-popular ochre, the green of Karma and the intense icy blue of Fjord working as beautiful highlights.”

These new colours join classics such as Ruby and Lime Zest for a palette that demonstrates extraordinary flexibility. The 12-strong Creations is now available on all Ready to Weave carpets, joining the existing Optimum, Elements and Dimensions. The palette is already forming the base for the seven-row narrowloom Havana and two new eight-row broadloom ranges in Urban and Nova Scotia. Along with the soon-to-release Kinetic, these Ready to Go carpets are available for delivery in just 14-days.

800 529 Hamish Kilburn

The Brioso bathroom furniture range is a refreshingly contemporary approach to bathroom design, offering varied individual design options and excellent value for money…

Working with designer Christian Werner, Duravit has launched a range of furniture that does justice to the notion of “Brioso” – representing relaxation, freshness, and joie de vivre in a contemporary bathroom interior.

The range’s distinctive features include precise, finely nuanced geometry produced by slender cabinet frames that form the edges of the furniture, mirrors and mirror cabinets. A further distinctive feature are handles and feet that can be supplied in the same cabinet colour if required, offering functionality without impacting on the overall design. These varied and customised design options offer excellent value for money.

The range has presence whilst also being reserved and can be easily combined with a wide range of design series such as Vero Air, P3 Comforts, ME by Starck, Starck 3, and D-Code.

The washbasin vanity units are available in up to five different widths (400-1300 mm). This also enables practically asymmetric, half-open furniture to be created that further emphasises the fresh look of the range.

The Brioso furniture range is part of the universal console programme providing even greater design freedom. The furniture consoles are available in two different thicknesses (30 and 45 mm, each with a variable width) and two depths. They can be combined with vanity units in widths of 30 to 80 cm and console washbasin vanity units of 62 to 100 cm. All furniture comes with the option of one or two drawers. The tall cabinet and semi-tall cabinet in widths of 420 or 520 mm offer yet more storage space.

1024 724 Hamish Kilburn

Bathroom specialist Kaldewei has just launched a revolutionary 4-in-1 system solution for easy, safe shower installation…

Launching in the UK this month, Kaldewei NexSys is a shower surface revolution. The innovative 4-in-1 system which is already pre-assembled at the factory, consists of a waste channel, sloping support, sealing and an enamelled shower surface enabling ultra simple and fast installation by professionals. NexSys takes a completely new approach to floor-level showers, perfectly combining two worlds: with one of the main advantage being it’s a seamless shower surface made of steel enamel with the design of a tiled shower area with a shower channel. The Kaldewei NexSys opens up a new market segment and rings in the change from shower channel to channel shower. This innovative product is available in eight sizes.

Narrow channel is an eye-catching feature

Only one year after the concept was introduced at ISH 2017 and after subsequent market research, Kaldewei is launching its revolutionary NexSys shower surface system on the market. The visual highlight of the elegant design is the narrow waste channel with a high-end designer cover made of brushed stainless steel that fits seamlessly into the shower surface’s overall minimalist look. Like all Kaldewei bathroom solutions, NexSys is made of superior steel enamel so it will retain its exquisite look for decades.

4-in-1 system cuts out installation steps

It’s not only in visual terms that the NexSys is revolutionising the shower market, Kaldewei is also a trail blazer when it comes to shower surfaces with regard to installation. The pre-assembled system of waste channel, sloping support, sealing tape and shower surface can, for example, be positioned directly in the screed recess after height compensation – a significant time saving for bathroom professionals. Thanks to the low built heights, floor-level installation is also possible with a limited construction depth. NexSys has no interior contour whatsoever making it ideal for insertion into the bathroom’s tile grid – like a large enamelled tile with integrated waste channel. Sound proofing is guaranteed with the use of sound insulation tape.

Digital helper for planning and installation

Kaldewei offers support every step of the way, ensuring easy planning and installation. Additional information about NexSys includes a wide range of online tools such as installation videos, its Product Configurator, an interactive planning assistant or the provision of corresponding certificates. Duravit shower + bath in a modern bathroom

Walk-in shower and bath sets high standards of comfort in small bathrooms

800 700 Hamish Kilburn

Bathroom specialist Duravit has launched a sleek shower and bath that unites contemporary bathroom design with the optimum use of space…

Shower + Bath, designed by EOOS, is a two-in-one walk-in shower and bathtub. The integrated glass door easily transforms the bathtub into an accessible open shower. If the door is opened towards the inside of the bathtub, it disappears under a waterproof cushion and remains invisible.

Precise lines are characteristic of the design language of Shower + Bath. The rectangular basic form and steep sloping sides ensure plenty of room to move when showering. The shower is surrounded by a generous glass enclosure, which can be selected in optional mirrored glass. This variant introduces an additional element of visual spaciousness into small bathrooms. Users can also comfortably sit on the cushion when showering, since it can be moved along the entire length of the bathtub.

The new shower and bathtub combination from Duravit unites several functions in one – as a shower, high quality bathtub, seat and shelf.
bathrooms.

The firm cushion is positioned on the integrated door and the edge of the bathtub, offering a comfortable seat and additional shelf space. The cushion also serves an additional function when relaxing in the bathtub; it can be used as an adjustable backrest or shelf.

With the door closed, the tub can be used as a relaxing bath in which to soak or as a foot bath. During bathing, a safety lock guarantees that the ESG-glass door cannot be accidentally opened.

The functional versatility of Shower + Bath is supported by its manufactured precision. The DuraSolid A material allows for sleek, refined edges in the design. The bathtub body, plinth and paneling are all made from the solid material. Compact external dimensions of 170 x 75 cm enable space-efficient installation options and ensure that this new solution can replace a conventional bathtub, even during bathroom renovations.

800 620 Hamish Kilburn

The bathroom should be comfortable, relaxing, and stylish, particularly as it is estimated we spend around three years of our lives in this room.

To make the bathroom as aesthetically appealing as possible, functional components are often invisible. The innovative technology concealed within the assembly units of toilets and washbasins is essential in ensuring the perfect interaction with products installed in front of the wall.

With DuraSystem®, Duravit offers convenient additional features for the bathroom. The new DuraSystem® is available for the toilet, urinal, washbasin, and bidet. In front of the wall, the sophisticated system uses actuator plates that are appealing to both the sense of sight and touch. Behind the wall, it guarantees a simple and perfect installation and solves many technical challenges. Whether for a new build, or a conversion, dry or wet installation, DuraSystem® is suitable for any installation type.

The actuator plates come in an electronic and mechanical version. Both feature the clear geometry that characterizes the stylish design of Duravit products.

Toilet featuring the DuraSystem

The electronic A2 toilet actuator plates, made from white glass, are surface-mounted. Their contemporary, timeless design enriches the bathroom and increases its users’ comfort. An infrared approaching sensor activates the illumination of the symbols when they detect movement close by. The remote control supplied enables the many convenient functions to be set and adjusted as required: integrated hygienic flush, auto flush, nightlight, cleaning function, emergency power supply, and the particularly quiet and effective odour extraction as an extra feature.

Brintons and Timorous Beasties to launch Craigend Collection at Clerkenwell Design Week

800 755 Hamish Kilburn

Carpet manufacturer Brintons will launch the new Craigend Collection designed by long-term collaborators Timorous Beasties at Clerkenwell Design Week 2018. Taking over St Johns Square the collection will be debuted in a pop-up installation designed by Studio Shaw Architects.

Famous for their outstanding diversity of pattern, Scottish design duo Timorous Beasties will present Craigend, their third collection with Brintons. Named after Craigend Place, home of the Glasgow based Timorous Beasties studio and birth place of the designs, the collection name is also inspired by the old Gaelic word ‘Creag’, which means rock.

Render of the Brintons and Timorous Beasties installation designed by Studio Shaw Architects at Clerkenwell Design Week 2018 to launch the Craigend Collection

This commercial collection is inspired by textures and surfaces found naturally underfoot, including sand dunes, stone moss and lichen, all reimagined in the Brintons’ signature 80/20 blend of 80 per cent wool and 20 per cent nylon. With Craigend, Timorous Beasties have called upon their fascination with the oftenbrutal beauty of the natural world, as well as taking aesthetic inspiration from different crafting materials including paint, ink and fabric.

Emma Cassidy, Head of Creative Design EMEA at Brintons commented: “Brintons are delighted to launch the highly anticipated Craigend Collection, our latest collaboration with Timorous Beasties which celebrates our 10-year anniversary of collaborating together. The collection brings to life a diverse range of bold, colourful and dynamic designs that will inspire and surprise the design community; pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in carpet design, for commercial spaces.”

Above from left: Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons, Timorous Beasties in the Glasgow studio

The installation will showcase a unique selection of woven carpets taken from the new Craigend Collection. Visitors will be taken on a journey through the pop-up installation, where the full-scale patterns will transport the audience into a world inspired by the textures and sights of the natural world.

Founders of Timorous Beasties Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons comment, “For our new Craigend collection, we took inspiration from what we see under our feet, taking cues from natural carpets such as sand dunes, moss, stone, and waves of water. We also thought about how carpet can be dramatic in transitional spaces such as lobbies, corridors, and grand dining rooms. We also considered how the functional aspects and minimal aesthetic can work in more personal spaces such as bedrooms, whilst still keeping the link between the dramatic and the serene. We first collaborated with Brintons a decade ago, and our love of pattern repeats from our wallpapers and fabrics, has been a very productive pairing, and adapts perfectly to carpet design.

Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons will be taking part in the Conversations at Clerkenwell talks programme and will be in conversation with Priya Khanchandani, deputy editor of ICON Magazine on Tuesday 22 May, 10.30am. Book your place here.

Brintons designed bespoke carpets for Hyatt Regency Paris Charles de Gaulle

700 476 Hamish Kilburn

Leading carpeting manufacturer Brintons has manufactured quirky bespoke carpets for the Hyatt Regency Paris Charles de Gaulle’s flexible working and meeting space, Le Campus.

The carpeting manufacturer worked in conjunction with design company Virserius Studio and general construction company, Vöcker Hospitality on the renovation, following the design brief to evoke nostalgia for university, to inspire creative thinking and enhance the exchange of ideas.

This direction led Virserius Studio to take inspiration from the structure of molecules, using the hotel’s bright colour palettes as stimulus for the bespoke designs.

“We manufactured Brintons bespoke axminster carpets using strong, really vibrant colours to stand out against the grey background,” said Mahlmann. “The pattern is made up of cubes of different sizes, and appears to fade from dark to light. The placement of the pattern is designed to draw you in as you approach a room, and as you enter reveals itself as an artwork on the floor. The carpets add a lot of value to the overall feel of the finished spaces.”

Brintons

Brintons manufactured approximately 700sqm of carpets for the renovation of the hotel. The pattern colour scheme is purposefully different in each room and the vibrant colours were chosen deliberately to match the rest of the interior design elements, from curtains to wall paint.

Kaldewei joins WWF’s Southeast Asia marine conservation programme

1024 683 Katy Phillips

Project to reduce plastic waste through sustainable waste management.

Bathrooms specialist Kaldewei has joined forces with the WWF’s marine conservation programme in Southeast Asia, with the aim of improving waste management in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

Announcing the drive, the company cited forecasts that by 2050 the oceans will contain as much plastic waste as fish. The first indications are already visible today: animals are perishing after ingesting plastic; microplastic is being found in many species of fish.

Furthermore, studies show that organised waste management is not practised in Southeast Asia and uncontrolled dumping of residual waste is a common occurrence. Owing to regular flooding in river basins, large quantities of this waste is swept into the oceans.

“Sustainability is enshrined in the Kaldewei corporate philosophy,” said Kaldewei Managing Director Franz Kaldewei. “We are happy to support the WWF’s important work to prevent plastic waste in the oceans, and we are confident that with our commitment we will be making a valuable contribution to marine conservation and the preservation of natural living environments.”

Keeping plastic out of the oceans

Working together, Kaldewei and the WWF are aiming to combat not only the impacts, but also the causes of environmental pollution. The aim of the project in the Mekong Delta is to quickly reduce the volume of waste by up to 80 per cent by means of separation and recycling, to shut down dumps over the long term and to clear disposal sites.

The partners hope that these measures will prevent large quantities of plastic from entering the ocean via the rivers and canals on the Mekong Delta every year, as is currently the case.

In manufacturing its shower surfaces, bathtubs and washbasins made of steel enamel – a composite of steel and glass – Kaldewei says it has always used natural raw materials that are 100% recyclable.

“For us, this partnership with the WWF is a logical step in our constant endeavours for a clean environment,” Kaldewei added.

SPA SPOTLIGHT: Opinion – Make a statement with your luxury hotel bathrooms

1024 683 Katy Phillips

As part of Hotel Design’s spotlight this month on spa products and services, Michael Gray, GROHE UK Product Manager, investigates the design possibilities offered to hotels by the latest shower, lighting, music and faucet technologies for bathrooms…

Luxury hotel bathrooms are designed to make a statement, using products that encourage wellbeing and promote a space of relaxation.

As a result, there is a huge array of wellness products now available for the hotel and hospitality industry, including showers with mood lighting, steam functions and music controlled by Bluetooth.

Oversized statement showerheads are also available, alongside products that offer a range of spray patterns designed to suit the user’s needs, with side shower sprays offering the opportunity for a massaging showering experience.

Solutions for all budgets

For smaller budgets, showering products are available that offer multiple spray patterns from an intense jet to a relaxing massage spray. This adds a simple but indulgent addition to your showering experience, offering you the choice to tailor the water flow to suit your mood.

Hotel bathrooms should offer the ultimate sanctuary in which to unwind at the end of the day.  Features like showers with multiple spray patterns and massaging function to statement taps designed to catch the eye will always impress clients.

Smart technology can also be considered for hotel bathrooms, particularly as more guests look to have a staycation to unwind and relax. Many smart products are now available in the bathroom from high tech toilets, to spa-inspired showers that help to create a relaxing bathroom sanctuary at the end of a busy day sightseeing or shopping.

Already a well-known feature in commercial washrooms, touchless taps are now gaining popularity in hotel bathrooms due to their unique combination of comfort and hygiene and convenient hands-free activation. Through the touchless sensor activated control, the taps minimise the spread of bacteria to contribute to a healthy bathroom. This also helps to keep the tap sparkling clean for longer, reducing maintenance and maximising product life. They also often come with a timer which automatically stops the water flow after a desired length of time to reduce wastage.

Stylish and hygienic

Shower toilets are the norm in Asia and now there is an increasing demand for these hygienic toilet systems in Europe, in both hotels and homes. Shower toilets feature an integrated bidet system and are designed to harness the gentle and effective cleansing benefits of water to help deliver optimum hygiene levels in the bathroom, and often come with a host of advanced features. Thanks to the gentle and natural cleansing process, the need for toilet paper is eliminated, thus the systems offer excellent eco-credentials.

Certain shower toilets offer smart technology, including extensive options that allow users to create a personalised cleansing routine, including adjusting the water pressure and position of the spray arm, to the preferred temperature, spray pattern and cleansing cycle.

The individual settings can be controlled intuitively using either the remote control or via an app which allows users to store all their favourite settings on a digital device. Some brands have also taken into consideration common annoyances for users, such as having to go to the toilet at night, and have combatted this by designing toilets with LED lighting.

Wilton Carpets weave a new look for Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa

1024 683 Katy Phillips

Wilton Carpets has revealed details of its latest project, which required bringing a sense of occasion to the new Orangery of Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa, a 16th Century country house in Northamptonshire.

The Grand Hall in the main house already featured a woven axminster bespoke design by Wilton, returning to warmth and grandeur after the hotel found the bare wood floors caused echoes.

As such, when it came to a floor for the Orangery, the general manager at Rushton Hall, Valerie Hazelton, had a clear idea of what was required:

“We wanted carpet in the Orangery to help with noise levels, as well as add a warmth and cosiness to the multi-purpose space, which we knew needed a neutral colour palette so that functions could bring their own theme and colours. The walls, curtains and chairs are plain, so it was important to offset this with a patterned carpet, but one that was still subtle enough to work with any event colour scheme chosen.”

Bordered Geometric Design

With previous experience of Wilton Carpets, Rushton Hall once again called upon the expertise of the Wiltshire-based manufacturer. Presenting a bordered geometric design with larger classical motifs inset, the pattern is contemporary while referencing the historic setting of the hotel’s architecture.

Wilton worked closely with Hazelton to ensure that the final creation met the needs of the building: “Making a decision on such a big area is not an easy task and Wilton worked with me to develop the final grey and gold colour palette for the design, producing samples in various combinations until I was sure we had made the right choice. It’s a fresh design but goes really well with the traditional style of the building. The carpet is liked by all our guests, but brides and grooms in particular seem to love the mixture of gold and grey tones.”

The carpet was woven in a premium 10-row quality in a rich British wool blend, ensuring it can withstand regular intense use and be easily cleaned between functions taking place in the Orangery for many years to come.

In adjacent corridors, Wilton created another bespoke repeating geometric design, this time in a wool-rich tufted quality. In a green and dark gold colourway, the carpet’s pattern works to accommodate the walls of the 16th Century building, which are far from being straight and true. The carpets were made in Wiltshire, giving Hazelton the confidence to choose Wilton once again.

“With Wilton weaving continuing to produce its carpets in Britain, it could offer me bespoke qualities within a quick timescale and I had the confidence that the carpet would be delivered on time with no delays or surprises along the way. We are absolutely delighted with our choice,” concludes Hazelton.

Rushton Hall’s history dates back to 1438, when construction of the original building begun under Sir William Tresham. Now a Grade I Listed building set in 25-acres of immaculate grounds, Rushton Hall is one of the finest hotels in the Midlands, awarded four red stars and three rosettes. Offering guests luxury accommodation, the hotel is known throughout Northamptonshire as a setting for glamorous weddings and events.

1024 683 Katy Phillips

As part of Hotel Design’s spotlight this month on outdoor furniture, we highlight the latest Bolero range from Nisbets.

“Creating the right atmosphere is essential for hoteliers to ensure that they attract the maximum amount of custom, so it is important that furniture choices are considered carefully as they have a huge impact on the vibe of any hotel,” says Richard Ebbs, Head of Brands for Nisbets Plc.

An eye-catching outdoor seating area is the perfect way for hoteliers to encourage passers-by to choose their hotel over their competitors during the summer months, and it is therefore vital that any outdoor furniture is in line with current trends along with being both well maintained and clean.

The Bolero range from Nisbets combines on-trend looks with an outstanding weather resistant finish which can be used both indoor and outdoor, depending on a hotel’s changing needs over the course of the year. Roca takes inspiration from its past for new Carmen collection

1024 683 Katy Phillips

The collection includes a close coupled WC, basin and pedestal, with a complementary furniture range and mirror.

Roca says its new Carmen range is based on its collection from the 1940s, having been launched to celebrate the company’s centenary.

However, it still features the latest in technology and material innovations. For example, the WC is rimless for greater hygiene and easier cleaning, as well as being fitted with a water distributor that Roca says provides an improved flushing performance.

The seat cover has been manufactured with SUPRALIT, a new exclusive resin registered by Roca, which it says is more durable (offering greater resistance to chemical agents and to discolouration), more hygienic (four times less porous material) and easier to clean (surface with soft and rounded angles).

The collection includes a close coupled WC, basin and pedestal, with a complementary furniture range and mirror also available.

Roca has also developed a range of Carmen brassware to complete the product family. It has an authentic period design with  the latest generation of flow limiters that its says guarantee a 5l/m flow, regardless of the system pressure.

As well as its ceramic disc operation, the Carmen taps has the Roca Evershine electroplating process applied for anticorrosion, lifetime brightness and anti-scratching.

“Over the last few years, the trend for vintage and classical design has continued to grow,” said Alan Dodds, Managing Director of Roca UK. “From the research we have conducted, vintage means more than just antiques, it is about classic and timeless design that is still relevant today. That is why we have introduced Carmen, it is a collection that is routed in the past but has all the attributes to complement a modern bathroom.”

Chelsom collaborates with Joyce Wang Studio and Benjamin West on Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park lighting

1024 683 Katy Phillips

Chelsom worked closely with Joyce Wang Studio and procurement specialist Benjamin West to create a custom designed lighting scheme for the refurbishment of guestrooms, corridors and public areas in the 5-star Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London.

The interior scheme was completely original, with Joyce Wang designing the lighting pieces, taking inspiration from the textures, forms and colours found in London’s iconic Hyde Park. The design team created an eclectic range of fittings in a variety of different materials, all of which required a range of manufacturing techniques.

The combination of differing rich brass metalwork alongside textured glasses and organic materials was deliberate to create a striking visual impact.

Statement chandeliers are prominent in the suites and guestrooms, each featuring individual lighting designs. Chandeliers in the suites take on organic forms with branch like brass arms sprawling across the ceiling finished with cracked glass acorns.

Other stand out chandeliers feature a trio of asymmetrically positioned ultra-shallow light units housing integral LED light sources. Each light unit features faux alabaster bottom diffusers and solid clear glass rods positioned around the perimeter creating a sparkle of twinkling light. Unique bedside wall sconces have dark metal frames which house jewel-like glass diffusers refracting beautiful light effects across the walls.

In keeping with the nearby Royal Horseguards Parade, corridor and bathroom light fittings were manufactured using synthetic horse hair. Bathroom wall sconces show the hair wrapped tightly around metal backplates to act as reflectors to the backlit light sources while magnanimous square pendants adorned with ribbed glass rods and ponytails of hair line the corridors.

In the public areas, Chelsom says it has been sensitive to the period architecture of the interior. In the main entrance lobby the company supplied modernised balustrade mounted light fixtures, which continue the overarching theme of crackled glass tones with rich brass metalwork.

As part of the refurbishment the team also restored existing chandeliers in the Rosebury Lounge, upgrading the technology and restoring the metalwork.

SPA SPOTLIGHT: How Kaldewei helped Hotel am Meer to create a unique experience

1024 683 Katy Phillips

As part of Hotel Design’s spotlight this month on spa products and services, we take a look at how the family-run Hotel am Meer is leading the way when it comes to offering wellness and beauty treatments…

Located on the Baltic island of Rügen, Hotel am Meer has undergone extensive upgrading within the last 12 months, with innovative technology and modern design blending together to create a 21st Century spa experience like no other.

‘Meerspa’ offers three unique wellbeing experiences – the Sound Wave bathtub audio system, the Skin Touch cosmetic treatment and Vivo Turbo Plus whirl system, all by premier German bathroom solutions manufacturer Kaldewei.

Working with Kaldewei, the 4-star hotel can now offer all of its guests a cosmetic bath with a rejuvenating effect while they immerse themselves in their favourite music, or enjoy the benefits of a massage in the whirl bath.

Speaking the same language

Owner Wolfgang Schewe made the decision to invest in the innovative technology for the spa treatments after listening to the wishes of his guests and talking to staff. Schewe realised there was less demand for ‘classic’ bath treatments, and more of a requirement for a boutique approach, offering a modern experience and utilising the range of individual pampering treatments now available.

The ‘Meerspa’ has proved to be an instant success with new and existing customers using the services, according to the hotel, particularly the use of the Kaldewei Skin Touch treatment in a hotel, which is a world-first. During a Skin Touch treatment, the bathwater is enriched with millions of microbubbles of air.

“Our spa guests particularly like the new Kaldewei Skin Touch system: the microbubbles of air enrich the skin with oxygen, leaving it smooth and supple,” explained Schewe. “Guests really enjoy using this new kind of beauty treatment and appreciate the long-lasting effect of Kaldewei Skin Touch.

“Our guests are very happy to use this new kind of beauty treatment and particularly appreciate the benefits of Kaldewei Skin Touch,” commented Schewe. “For us too, this investment makes sense because we can offer our guests completely new and attractive treatments, thus recouping a part of our additional costs.”

Duravit present the ultimate toilet experience

888 1024 Katy Phillips

Refreshing, clean, pleasant – all the Duravit toilet products and features offer a new and convenient way to feel good.

The SensoWash® shower-toilet seats ensure modern toilet hygiene and an improved quality of life. Each of the functions and practical features, even the design, are perfectly co-ordinated for an incomparable, freshly washed feel.

The SensoWash® Slim seat with soft closing mechanism and “Rearwash”, “Ladywash” or “Comfortwash” features combines all the essential functions. The entire seat can be removed in one go for easy cleaning. The SensoWash® Starck e shower-toilet seat has a replacement spray head, energy-saving mode and additional features such as a night light. The slender and elegant remote control for all the SensoWash shower-toilet seats is discreet and completely intuitive to operate.

Furthermore, the new rimless toilets optimise the flushing process: thanks to the open design, the rim is cleaned hygienically and efficiently and the entire inner surface is rinsed with a dynamic and powerful jet that uses only a small amount of water. Another advantage in terms of hygiene: the special anti-bacterial HygieneGlaze2.0 coating, which is baked into the ceramic surface during the firing process, acts fast
and effectively, killing 99.9% of germs and providing lasting protection.

Duravit introduces new range of tap fittings

1024 870 Katy Phillips

Following the success of C.1, Duravit introduces two further universal tap fitting ranges – B.1 and B.2. The ranges are positioned in the entry and mid-level price segment.

For Duravit, these tap fittings represent an extension of the fundamental concept of designing the bathroom in a streamlined and consistent “language,” and allow for a complete Duravit bathroom. The tap fitting ranges, B.1 and B.2, are competitively priced offering added value, particularly for architects and developers. B.1 features soft, round contours, while B.2 boasts a straight-lined, striking design. Two different spout heights (S and M) cater to personal requirements for the washbasin.

Polished chrome surfaces ensure a pleasant feel on all models. The water jet can be optimally adapted to the user’s needs thanks to an individually adjustable aerator. B.1 and B.2 also offer an ideal tap fitting solution for any installation scenario in all other areas of the bathroom, such as the bidet, shower and bathtub.

For the shower, there is a choice between single-lever shower mixers and a thermostatic shower mixer for exposed or concealed installation. These can be combined with any square or round showerheads for wall or ceiling installation, and shower rails and hand showers in various versions. Ready-made, pre-fitted shower systems with showerheads and hand showers are available as a full practical solution – and can also be fitted retrospectively. All options are available for the bathtub: from the tub rim tap fitting to freestanding bath mixers; from thermostatic to single-lever mixers for exposed or concealed installation.

The Duravit BlueBox®, a universal installation system for a range of tap fitting designs (lever mixers or thermostats), is used for concealed installation. This allows the design decision to be taken even after the basic set has been installed.

Hamilton makes the guest ‘king’ at Danesfield House Hotel and Spa

1024 751 Toby Cruse

Hamilton Litestat has taken the guest experience at Danesfield House Hotel and Spa to new heights with the introduction of its latest smart lighting and Maid-Call controls, giving visitors ultimate control during their stay.

The Grade II luxury Buckinghamshire hotel embarked on a long-term refurbishment programme in 2015 and turned to Hamilton to further improve and modernise the guest experience. Beginning with an initial 12 bedrooms, Danesfield House Hotel and Spa was looking for solutions that would bring in new technology, improve energy savings and reduce its carbon footprint while also remaining in-keeping with the period property.

Hamilton’s Project Team specified their Smart Lighting Control to create the perfect ambience in each room and area according to the time of day and guest usage. Each suite features 8 x 1-10V and 8 x 2A relay circuits with a DMX controller, which allows a series of lighting scenes to be programmed and set. In some of the bedrooms and en-suites, the DMX controls red, green and blue LED strip lights to create the perfect mood lighting and complement the décor. The lighting is activated by the hotel key card switch so that the appropriate lighting scene is activated when this is inserted.

Now fully in control of the lighting, guests also have more control over housekeeping services with Hamilton’s Maid-Call solution. Inside each suite is a coloured touchscreen controller where guests can indicate whether they would like their room cleaned or if they do not wish to be disturbed. A second touchscreen outside the room displays this message to housekeeping, helping to avoid embarrassing ‘walk in’ moments. Guests can also request assistance in their room using the Maid-Call system, helping to improve guest services during their stay.

To be in-keeping with the hotel’s stunning design, control plates and all other switches, wall plates and accessories were specified in a coordinated Linea-Scala design, finished in Satin Stainless with a Bright Chrome frame. The two-part design has a stepped edge for a classic and sophisticated look that fits seamlessly with the period property. There’s also a hint of the contemporary as the plate’s fixings are concealed using Hamilton’s patented four-point plate clipping system, CFX.

For ease of use, each control plate has been engraved so that every control button can be easily identified, while a special plate with US13, SHUKO and USA sockets was installed in each room to improve the comfort and experience of tech-savvy and international guests.

“We’re delighted with the finished restoration project,” says Danesfield House Hotel and Spa General Manager Anthony Cox. “We aim to offer each and every guest the best experience during their stay and although lighting control may seem like such a small part it can make a significant difference to a guest’s comfort. Every little feature counts, and the coordinated look Hamilton has provided in each of our bedroom suites reflects the quality and attention to detail that is synonymous with Danesfield House Hotel and Spa.”

Shaun Kempson from Kempson Electrical Services, who appointed Hamilton, adds: “In a period property such as this, only the highest quality will do. Hamilton has provided us with a fantastic, high-tech solution that gives visitors a luxury experience while reducing energy usage. Based on this, we look forward to working with Hamilton on future projects.”

Bespoke Wonder at the Winter Gardens

1024 679 Toby Cruse

Woven Axminster carpet by Wilton Carpets, has been installed in one of the South West’s leading venues, the Winter Gardens Pavilion, Weston-super-Mare, bringing a sense of the historic with a beautiful and opulent design.

The Winter Gardens Pavilion, is one of the seaside resort’s most famed architectural sights; a neo-Georgian building that first opened in 1927. After a £15m renovation under the ownership of Weston College, it is now one of the largest venues of its kind in the south-west of England, with an impressive ballroom that’s ideal for conferences, ceremonies and events.

Wilton Carpets turned to its library of historic designs for the Winter Gardens, proposing the intricate and opulent floral of Malabar as the ideal design to complement the building’s stunning interior. The pattern’s bold look has proven to work well within the Pavilion’s grand curved façade with its tall arching windows, columns and fine detailing.

Naomi Waterman, associate and head of interiors, AWW Inspired Environments, responsible for the design of the Winter Gardens Pavilion refurbishment, comments:

“The carpet design was led by the client, as they had a clear desire for a traditional, opulent pattern for which Malabar was perfect. We felt a single pattern throughout the Pavilion would lead to a more cohesive overall design, leaving the individual spaces open and flexible enough to cater for the varied functions taking place within the building.”

AWW Inspired Environments proposed a colour scheme for the carpet centred around a royal blue base colour, influenced by Weston College’s brand identity and a historical colour analysis of the building’s era. With other colours to coordinate tones found within soft furnishings and curtains, the result is a carpet that is bright and modern, yet which references the building’s formidable history.

“We were recommended Wilton Carpets by the main contractor on the project, Midas Group, and the process was simple and efficient,” continues Naomi. “Meeting tight deadlines, Wilton provided rapid sampling of the design in our chosen colourway so that we could arrange client sign-off. The carpet looks absolutely beautiful; both a testament to the building’s interior and Wilton’s craft.”

Using Wilton’s Malabar design, from its Classical Dimensions Ready to Weave collection, some 1180m2 of British wool-rich woven axminster was made for the Winter Gardens Pavilion by Wilton at its Wiltshire factory. Using Ready to Weave, where library designs can be custom made in a choice of permanently loomed colours, allowed AWW Inspired Environments to meet the tight deadlines of the project, with the programme allowing custom carpet to be delivered in just four-weeks.

Made in a durable nine-row construction that promises to stand up to wear and with an ability to disguise dirt and soil, the carpet was installed by Rudge Brothers and James Flooring.

Versital Marble Bar Tops Commissioned For New Whitbread Concept Cookhouse & Pub

1024 683 Toby Cruse

Versital has been commissioned by interior designers JMDA Ltd to provide bespoke bar and kitchen pass tops for the latest project with hospitality giant Whitbread.

Cookhouse & Pub located in Oldbury, West Midlands, is the newest concept venue by the company and features Versital’s on-trend ‘Arabesque’ marble finish surfaces.

Described by Whitbread as ‘an informal, all day restaurant, with the relaxed vibe and affordability of a pub’ the new space is now a striking new eatery that has replaced the previous site.

“Much of the original interior was stripped out,” explained Simon Tyas, director of JMDA. “The kitchen and back of house areas were retained in the same location, but the kitchen was converted into a theatre-style, extending into the restaurant and including a bistro oven, so diners can see their food being prepared.”

Versital’s made-to-order surfaces were commissioned for the bar and kitchen pass tops in a luxurious white marble finish. The handcrafted surfaces bring a fresh and modern feel to the space, effortlessly complementing the contemporary colour palette of teal, mushroom and off white.

Punctuated with pops of ochre yellow and showcasing wooden and copper accents, the new restaurant displays industrial elements throughout for an informal yet sophisticated dining experience.

Versital’s solid marble surfaces offer all the beauty of natural marble without the issues the natural product often brings – a totally unique product and the most realistic faux marble on the market.

The true-to-life marble is 100% waterproof, non-porous and stain proof making it a preferred choice for bars and restaurants alike. Boasting an impressive range of over 100 exclusive finishes, Versital caters for all interior styles whether domestic or commercial.

“Being involved with a prestigious brand such as Whitbread is always a proud moment for us,” Gemma Stockberger, Head of Marketing and Sales for Versital UK said. “We were absolutely delighted to be specified, once again, by the designer JMDA who we love working with. All our surfaces are hand-crafted with care and it’s fantastic to see them used on beautifully designed projects being enjoyed across the UK.  We can’t wait to see this new brand concept roll out across the UK over the coming year.”

Interior design for bathrooms: the current trends and most spectacular looks to inspire interior envy

560 373 Adam Bloodworth

Hotel Designs are celebrating spectacular bathrooms, from stunning hotel bathroom designs to bespoke home solutions. In need of some design inspiration? Here are some of the bathrooms we can’t get out of our minds and, quite frankly, need in our home…

The One With A View: MKV Design‘s bathrooms at the Bürgenstock Hotel

The hotel’s new double-sized tubs have window views over Lake Lucerne, and the Swiss Alpine range. For a quicker fiz, an oversized “rain” shower falls onto marble walls and flooring. A warm, natural colour palette is designed to compliment the sheer views out the window, rather than fight them.

The Classic One: The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square Hotel, newly opened

Boutique hotel group Principal have opened their latest hotel, and their first in Edinburgh. Comprising seven Georgian townhouses the hotel backs onto one of Edinburgh’s chicest private squares. The hotel was previously known as The Roxburghe Hotel, but has been completely refitted by eminent interior designers Goddard Littlefair. The rooms, including the bathroom, are inspired by “the golden age of travel” and we adore these freestanding baths with views out over bustling Edinburgh…

The Glamorous One: Roca bathroom solutions for the home

Roca make bathroom solutions that are both sustainable and stylish. The Italian company founded in 1917 have just released two new ranges, Roca and a Georgio Armani collaboration, Armani Roca. The Armani Roca collection features ergonomic shapes which feel retro, but they’re paired with up-to-date technology.  The collection has been described by the brand as “both contemporary and timeless,” towing the line of the designer’s clothes ranges.

The Vintage One: Batty Langley’s hotel

Repurposing vintage showers and baths is nothing new, but boutique London hotel Batty Langley’s – in the throws of Spitalfields Market – boasts the most extensive range of vintage items in a hotel that we’ve ever seen. Room is individually fitted with Victorian rolltop baths, and stand alone, genuinely impressive metal showers in polished bronze tones. Lavish, but in a nerdy, all-consuming “we love interior design” kind of way. You’ll not want to go outside.

The Opulent One: Maison Valentina

Maison Valentina is a new luxury bathroom brand that provides a collection capable of making project dreams a reality with high-end solutions as bathtubs, washbasins and free-standing units – all made with the finest selection of materials; brass, marble, wood, glassEach piece is crafted with rare handiwork techniques and contemporary design.

The Tech-Savvy One: Grohe

GROHE F-digital Deluxe takes the concept of luxurious and personalised showering to the next level. A user can simply select a coloured lighting to suit the mood, favourite music and the right amount of steam to enhance the shower experience. All the individual modules of GROHE F-digital Deluxe can be controlled from a variety of mobile digital devices via an app for ease and convenience.

An in-depth look at Roca’s new Armani and Modo bathroom ranges

560 278 Adam Bloodworth

“Always attentive to the changes in society relating to water,” Roca make bathroom solutions that are both sustainable and stylish. The Spanish company founded in 1917 have just released two new ranges, Roca and a Georgio Armani collaboration, Armani Roca.

Roca have taken home awards for sustainability and innovation, and have grown to become one of the world’s leading providers of baths, sinks and showers. Their modern approach and considered approach over the last 100 years has led to international acclaim, and partnerships with the likes of fashion designer Georgio Armani.

The Armani/Roca Baia collection features ergonomic shapes which feel retro, but they’re paired with up-to-date technology.  The collection has been described by the brand as “both contemporary and timeless,” towing the line of the designer’s clothes ranges.

The countertop over-countertop washbasins heavily feature brassware, a staple material used heavily in the brand’s bathroom designs. The range arrives in quirky shades of matte gold and dark metallic, eye-catching and offball.

A new range of classic brassware fittings have also been designed. The highlight of which is a retro-inspired bath filler (freestanding within the bath) features surprising thermostatic technology, and a vintage-inspired shower column.

The range also boasts a new freestanding bath tub, wash basins, towel rails, and a new range of toilets and bidets with advanced technological flushes.

‘Griege’, brushed steel and chrome are further colour notes in the collection.

Roca have also created their own genuinely ground-breaking new material, which they exclusively own. SURFEX® is quite remarkable. SURFEX is made from organic and 100% recyclable materials, and can be poured into bespoke moulds to create baths and sinks in new shapes previously impossible to make without seam and joints.

When the statement pieces aren’t wanted anymore, the pieces can be reprocessed again and made into new designs. Also, the design of the new material conserves the water temperature for longer, and reduces minimal chemicals when created.

Using the innovative SURFEX formulation, defined angles and shapes can be formed that other materials simply couldn’t create. From the design to the finishing touches, the material is really what makes this range stand out,” says Alan Dodds, Managing Director of Roca UK.

The new neutrals: six new sophisticated designs in neutrals, greys and metallics from Skopos Fabrics

560 485 Adam Bloodworth

Custom furnishings provider Skopos Fabrics have unveiled a sophisticated new range of fabrics that show off the trending ‘new neutrals’.

Greys and metallics lead the way in forming an array of patterns on their new custom furnishings, available for the hotel industry from the celebrated company, who have provided furnishings for the industry for over forty years.

They say: “Our reputation for stylish design, durability and technical excellence have established Skopos an enviable client base in the specialist hotel and leisure, cruise and health/elderly care sectors”.

The latest wide-width luxury designs from Skopos feature geometric patterns across six new contemporary designs. Influenced by the ancient Japanese art of Origami, the surprising, angular patterns feature on silk and satin.

Diamond, wave and holographic hexagon designs appear on the fabrics, which boast a “raised, three-dimensional quality” and are available in either matt or silk finishes.

The designs are for bedding or drapery solutions “where style meets functionality”.

The range differs greatly from the botanical range Skopos released last autumn, which featured heavier detailing and bolder colour. Supporting the trend for bringing the outside in, the exquisite botanical print from Skopos was an exploration of woodland plants and flowers.

Flores Silvestri was an elegant hand-drawn collection, brought to life on a new linen-look base cloth. Echoing traditional recording methods, the collection flourished with fine detailed outlines, flower-pressed silhouettes and a combination of rich colour and line illustration.

With a choice of 7 new designs and 10 base cloths, including a stain resist upholstery, this collection suits independent hotels, care and leisure projects. Designs included a woodland mix, large scale floral, flower press design, textured check and a fern, in a sophisticated colour palette.

Hotel Summit 2018 welcomes James Alexander bespoke upholstery as a partner

560 372 Adam Bloodworth

The Hotel Summit celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2018 and is pleased to announce its partnership with James Alexander bespoke upholstery

The Hotel Summit is the hotel industry’s premier networking event, where industry suppliers and buyers meet and will this year be held at the Radisson Blu, London Stansted on June 4th – 5th. Click here for all the details.

James went it alone in 2017 and set up as a bespoke furniture maker having cut his teeth at his family’s contract furnishing company.

Led by ‘creative’ and ‘technical’ excellence

James describes his own furnishings as being led with ‘creative’ and ‘technical’ excellence, gained from his wide and extensive background in manufacturing.

“I realised there was a demand for artisan crafts within the furnishing industry and limited time and talent. Despite the cottage industry nature of most factories outside the few large producers, most companies still have production lines and are not set up to devote the time to develop and produce bespoke work. I am able to respond quickly to quotation requests,” explains James.

“Furniture that is timeless”

“We cover all aspects of interior furnishings, but our manufacturing speciality is all types of seating and upholstery and our projects include everything from retirement villages & cinemas to hotels and private commissions.  We have been trading for 3 years now and our ability to make excellent furniture here in the UK quickly to specification is proving a hit with designers and contractors”.

“My aim is to keep the service both personable and efficient at all times whilst creating furniture that is both timeless and special to you”.

Vaughan will also boast a new addition to their floor lamp collection at the event, available in brass or bronze, with a glass table and mirror wall light attached. The light will feature jewel shapes and an embroidered linen design, with blue motifs.

Transforming waste into high-end products is the new fashion, say interior design trends experts Grohe

560 312 Adam Bloodworth

Transforming waste into high-end design is going to be huge in 2018, say leading industry supplier, Grohe.

The leading sanitary products manufacturer have always had an innovative, creative approach to design. Only recently they announced their plans to incorporate 3D printing into their production process.

And now, in a report about the latest industry trends for 2018, Grohe insist re-using waste products will be the new ethically conscious fashion. Here are the trends for 2018 they spotted in full.

Waste is now seen as a status symbol

As the world becomes ever more focused on ditching plastic, such as plastic straws, designers are re-thinking ways we can creatively use waste. Waste is now bizarrely, but wonderfully seen as a status symbol. Ikea introduced a range recently entirely devoted to waste. KUNGSBACKA features cupboard doors made from scrap wood from mills, old furniture and packaging materials. And burgeoning brand Pentatonic released a range furniture made from things like plastic, fizzy drink cans and smartphone screens. See their chair made of waste, above.

Revel in pastels

Grohe spotted this one a mile off. Last year’s obsession with ‘Millennial Pink’ has opened the gateway to a broad range of pastels, such as soft corals, which the brand describe, cheerfully as “youthful and optimistic”.

Experiment with jesmonite

Jesmonite is a favourite with designers, because it can be used to replicate the look of pretty much any surface or texture. The diverse material is making a big impact right now, thanks to the trend for Terrazzo. Grohe describe the material as having “tactile warmth”, inviting touching and in this light, owners form close relationships with the innovative material. What’s best is that it can literally form the surface of your dreams, without the stresses of buying in less functional, less hygienic ‘authentic’ products, like stone.

Bring the outside in with botanicals

This one’s been at boiling point for a while, but for 2018 the botanicals trend shows no signs of slowing. Now, wallpaper is the latest design item to be given a floral touch, as the trend moves forward and interior fans are investing in florals not only in their natural flower pots, but on the walls, too.

Make a statement with glass

The expansive look and feel of glass compliments the ongoing trend for open spaces both at home, and at work. Glass represents freedom of expression and thought, and now that textured glass is back in, we’ll likely see a lot more statement glass ornamental features, as well as the material being used for fixtures. Experimental design studio, Rive Roshan are at the helm of this spectacular new use of glass. See the image, above.

Britton Bathrooms unveil new luxury bathroom ceramics with discreet Nano Glaze protection

1024 889 Adam Bloodworth

Britton Bathrooms have unveiled a new range of luxurious bathroom ceramics with Nano Glaze coating, a strong protector for surfaces which are prone to a build up of bacteria.

The discreet Nano Glaze lends the ceramics extra shelf life, so they hold their contemporary look for longer, even with persistent daily use.

The slender designs suit modern, contemporary bathrooms with a stylish yet simplistic aesthetic.  The ceramics (including basins and WC furniture) have gentle curves, and non-fussy finishes which, thanks to the advanced surface technology, are easy to clean, as dirt and germs can be easily wiped away.

Advanced surface technology

While some ceramics are traditionally floorstanding, others create more of a talking point by being freestanding (or wallhung).

Britton Bathrooms are part of the Crosswater bathroom design group, pioneers of their field who lead with an innovative approach. Within Crosswater, there are three well-respected brands: Crosswater, Simpsons and Bauhaus.

Crosswater Contracts have worked with both boutique and international brands including Hilton, Mondrian, Malmaison, Ampersand and Laslett. They have become particularly known for being the UK’s seminal provider of stunning brassware and showers for a wide range of high-specification bathrooms.

Britton’s designs extend more widely across furniture, toilets, basins, taps, baths, showers, mirrors and accessories.

Visit the Britton Bathrooms website for more information about their contemporary range of Nano Glaze ceramics, and for more information on their wider collections

650 433 Adam Bloodworth

Oasis Hotels & Resorts have revealed the title of their upscale ‘resort within a resort’ concept that aims to be as intimate as an Airbnb, but as luxurious as a grand resort.

The Sian Ka’an will open in Cancun, and Tulum, Mexico, although no official opening date has yet been slated.

The adults-only accommodation will be the most luxurious accommodation available at the group’s Grand Tulum and Grand Sens resort hotels, after a multi-million dollar cash injection.

The resort are yet to reveal the details of any design partnerships or style influences for the property; the hotel group’s key claim at this stage is reconciling the hotel market with that of Airbnb.

Intimate like Airbnb, luxurious like a grand resort

There will be 76 different Sian Ka’an room styles, some of which have their own private terraces with plunge pools and in-room whirlpools, so the Sian Ka’an will particularly suit romantic escapes.

Rooms will also have access to a personal concierge and butler service, as well as upscale in-room dining services and access to private bars.

Guests can access a private spa and Champagne bar

Jesus Almaguer, director of marketing and communications for Oasis Hotels & Resorts, said: “We continuously seek to elevate the guest experience. The creation of the Sian Ka’an concept represents an opportunity to capture the attention of an entirely new audience. A spa and Champagne bar will be available exclusively to Sian Ka’an guests, as well as access to a private beach club, pool, bar and a collection of four restaurants exclusive to the resort.

The Sian Ka’an experience will be available within close proximity of family-friendly Grand Oasis Tulum, and The 21-and-over resort, The Sian Ka’an at Grand Sens.

Case Study: Brintons at Hotel Walther, Switzerland

Case Study: Brintons at Hotel Walther, Switzerland

999 614 Daniel Fountain

In celebration of its 110th anniversary, the Hotel Walther commissioned Brintons to translate the elaborate designs of interior designer Virginia Maissen into woven Axminster rugs and fitted carpet to complement the refurbishment of the hotel.

The concept of the design was to create a modern, inviting and comfortable feel in this grand hotel with inspiration taken from its surroundings and history. Zürich-based interior designer Virginia Maissen worked with Brintons to redesign the interior to highlight the heritage of the hotel, but also incorporate modern art installations by Rolf Sachs and Sandro Fabbri.

Case Study: Brintons at Hotel Walther, SwitzerlandThe newly refurbished hotel, a member of the Relais & Châteaux group, unveiled its updated design earlier this year. The 17 bespoke carpet designs throughout are bold and abstract, in a colour palette of reds, greens and yellows that reference the hotel’s alpine surroundings.

Brintons collaborated closely with Virginia Maissen to translate her designs into Axminster carpet. The layering of imagery within the designs, mixing bold colours and the subtle photographic representation exploited the full range of the carpet manufacturer’s 32-colour High Definition Weave; a unique Brintons’ innovation that allows for infinite design possibilities and highly dynamic visuals.

The end result is a beautifully detailed collection of bespoke carpets in the lobby, fine dining room, stairs and smoking lounge of the hotel.

Virginia Maissen commented: “I am so proud of the bespoke carpets, Brintons translated all my designs perfectly, the stand out details coupled with a classic pattern brings together both of our design visions. The 17 unique carpet designs demanded special attention from both sides, and Brintons delivered on time and within budget. This project perfectly demonstrates Brintons’ skill in creating one-off pieces to a client specification.”

Case Study: Brintons at Hotel Walther, SwitzerlandAntique treasures and decorations have been reinterpreted to reflect the hotel’s history: original ceilings and rounded archways from the early twentieth century have been exposed with the help of local craftsmen. Duravit at the Louvre Abu Dhabi

Project Spotlight: Duravit at Louvre Abu Dhabi

1000 666 Daniel Fountain

Jean Nouvel has created an architectural wonder in the desert. It includes products by Duravit, designed by Philippe Starck.

A commission that was unusual even for the French star architect and Pritzker prize winner Jean Nouvel – the creation of the first all-purpose museum in the Arab world – and the first in the twenty-first century, a building that is intended to stand as a symbol for Abu Dhabi.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi was officially opened on 11 November 2017. The spectacular building on Saadiyat Island will show 300 objects on loan from thirteen leading museums in France. However, the greatest attraction is the building itself.

Duravit at Louvre Abu DhabiBetween modernity and tradition
The architecture is modern but timeless, incorporating elements from Abu Dhabi’s architectural tradition. Jean Nouvel took inspiration from an Arab medina (old town) to create a building whose domed metal roof weighs as much as the Eiffel Tower in Paris but is supported by just four columns – a technical feat that is also an aesthetic experience.

A total of fifty-five different buildings form a museum city on the island in the Gulf, covered by a huge steel roof with a diameter of 180 metres.

Passages and corridors wind their way through this cool white labyrinth, with steps up to the flat roofs of some of the building blocks to enable visitors to see the spectacular domed roof from close up. This unique design consists of almost 8,000 stars of different sizes and angles, superimposed in seven layers.

Like a roof made of overlapping palm leaves, this structure provides shade and protection from the hot desert sun. The effect is breathtaking: “It produces a poetic, almost magical rain of light,” says architect Jean Nouvel. At night the effect is reversed when the internally lit building shines like a miniature night sky.

Nouvel, Starck and Picasso
In the white bathrooms the works of another French architect and designer are on show: toilets by Philippe Starck, designed for Duravit. Starck was also inspired by tradition in his design of the toilet. The Starck 1 toilet recalls its historical predecessor, a bucket – interpreted in a completely new way, of course.

Jean Nouvel’s building occupies a site of almost 100,000 square metres, with 8,600 square metres of exhibition space, including 6,400 for the permanent exhibition and 2,000 for temporary exhibitions. The first exhibition will feature Leonardo da Vinci’s “La Belle Ferronnière”, a self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh and works by Pablo Picasso.

Batik runner, Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets

Kit Kemp, Wilton Carpets create exciting carpet collection

1000 641 Daniel Fountain

Wilton Carpets and Kit Kemp have come together to create an exciting collection of woven wool-rich carpets for hospitality, travel and home.

Kit Kemp MBE has forged an international reputation as one of the world’s top interior designers. With a unique approach to her work, Kit is also well-known as an author and passionate champion of British art, craft and sculpture. As Design Director of Firmdale Hotels PLC, she is the creative force behind hotels including London’s Ham Yard, Charlotte Street, The Soho Hotel and New York’s Crosby Street Hotel and The Whitby. Her designs have been celebrated with many prestigious awards including ‘Condé Nast Best Hotel in the World for Design’.

Situated in the Wiltshire town of the same name, the spiritual home of weaving for nearly 400 years, Wilton Carpets designs and manufactures in Britain, making carpet from British wool on a blend of traditional machinery and the country’s most advanced robotic high-speed loom. Wilton Carpets is the embodiment of the very best in modern manufacturing blended with traditional craftsmanship.

Kit’s collaboration with Wilton Carpets has created a stand-out collection for hospitality, travel and home, interpreting scale and usability through the latest manufacturing techniques. With a highly experienced design team, spearheaded by Damien Roscoe, Wilton Carpets has skilfully turned Kit’s ideas into beautiful high quality woven carpets, pushing carpet craft to its limits.

Kit explains: “New manufacturing technology has made my ideas a possibility and with its design input, Wilton Carpets has turned them into a joyful reality. We have been able to create subtle effects and graduations of colour to give carpets a unique feel, similar to the finish of a hand-blocked fabric. Colour makes you feel happy and gives a contemporary buzz to this collection.”

The made-to-order range introduces nine unique and multi-tasking designs that draw from a diverse array of inspiration within folklore, architecture and botanical motifs. These come together to provide carpets that work in both traditional and modern interiors.

Damian Roscoe, Head of Creative at Wilton Carpets: “We’re incredibly proud of the Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets collection as it represents just what is achievable when two creative forces collaborate. The collection has been a joy to develop and we’ve worked closely with Kit to make sure her vision was reproduced with the attention-to-detail for which we are famed.”

Whether using traditional Axminster or Wilton weaves, or incorporating the added texture of a Brussels weave, Kit Kemp by Wilton Carpets delivers carpet of the finest design and quality. Made in a British wool-rich blend for lasting appearance and wear resistance, the range is available in wall-to-wall carpet and as bespoke area rugs, in a quality and construction suitable for the demands of project.

Batik (main image)
One of the most difficult influences to turn into carpet, Batik references hand-blocked fabrics and the subtle effects this technique brings. Kit Kemp says: ‘it’s a new way to bring one off craftwork into you home.” Batik comes in two striking colourways dominated by red and blue.

Detail
A strong architectural look, which is ‘one of my favourites, so simple but graphic and strong’ explains Kit. Available in six colourways, including red on blue and yellow on black.

By Way
A classic herringbone infused with bright colour combinations that Kit describes as ‘having fun in a colourful and carefree way’. Available in four high-contrast colourways.

Domino
Based on traditional Turkish carpets, this design has a large diamond repeat that Kit says, ‘needs to be seen to be believed’. A definite ode to the Arts and Crafts in four colourways including dynamic shades of blue and terracotta.

Flower and Berry
There is more than meets the eye with this overall Botanical pattern. ‘This is a design that will work well in both traditional and modern settings’, says Kit. Available in five colourways featuring red on off-white, off-white on blue and off-white on pea green

Leaf Cut
Inspired by nature, this is a carpet that Kit describes as, ‘falling leaves in a modern way that will look interesting in any environment’. Leaf Cut comes in two popping colourways, blue with leaves of orange and red with green.

Leaf Cut in Cerise area rug, Kit Kemp by Wilton CarpetsOpen Plan
A large repeat that looks good in grand areas, tribal influences abound. The Open Plan pattern ‘takes the traditional and turns it into something that says today’, explains Kit. This pattern comes in four colour combinations, including three with an off-white base cloth.

Tweed Fleck
A tweed design which Kit describes as having ‘flecks of fabulous tiny vibrant colours” It is a modern-day classic. Tweed Fleck is available in seven high-impact colourways including red, teal and blue.

Squiggle
A simple linear geometric design that still manages to make a statement and which Kit believes will make ‘halls and stairways look tailored’. With inversed colours available, this pattern comes in five other off-white combinations.

The richness of pattern and understanding of colour is a signature look of Kit Kemp and in creating the collection, the team at Wilton Carpets has pushed carpet design to the limit. Kit Kemp and Wilton Carpets are bringing craft into carpets for everybody to enjoy.

Sleep 2017 Live: Kelly Hoppen joins forces with Brintons

753 518 Daniel Fountain

Kelly Hoppen MBE has joined forces with leading carpet manufacturer Brintons to create a bold new collection of contemporary woven carpets.

The new venture is the renowned interior designer’s first ever carpet collection and will be launched at this year’s Sleep, the annual hotel design event taking place in London today and tomorrow.

The Kelly Hoppen Collection by Brintons brings the designer’s unparalleled eye for trend-leading design to the commercial carpet sector. The result is a distinctive new contemporary aesthetic that completely eschews the typical ‘swirl and block’ patterns for which the commercial/hospitality sector is traditionally known.

Instead, the dynamic collection consists of 13 geometric and organic designs in on-trend colourways that reflect the designer’s award-winning design style and pared-back aesthetic. Kelly Hoppen took inspiration from diverse influences ranging from geometric shapes to elements found in everyday surroundings such as cracks in a pavement and splashes of paint.

“I wanted to do something quite cutting edge and out there compared to what we see at the moment…I think it’s different and it’s in the forefront of design in terms of commercial carpeting, so I am extremely excited,” she says.

Kelly Hoppen - Brintons - Sleep 2017The collection is suitable for a wide variety of hospitality applications including hotels, casinos, cruise ships or airports. Each Kelly Hoppen by Brintons design is woven to order in the full range of specifications that combine Brintons’ patented blend.

After 41 years in design, Kelly Hoppen relished the fresh challenge of designing her first contract carpets: “It’s been fun, it’s been enlightening and I’ve learnt a lot from it. Carpet is an interesting product to design. There is an array of materials and textures and it’s a challenge to design a carpet that is hardwearing but also luxurious, beautiful and comfortable. Although you think of it as a flat surface, it is three-dimensional so the design process is complex. You have to think carefully about scale too as the design needs to work in large expansive areas as well as in narrower spaces such as guestrooms and corridors. Not only that, you need to design a surface that other designers can put their own style on too. Once you get it right though, you just know.”

The designer continued: “In terms of the collaboration with Brintons, there is mutual admiration and respect -Brintons is an incredible company with great heritage. I think this is just the start of a really wonderful collaboration. With this collection, each piece that we’ve created is different and is a statement in itself. I think it’s going to be brilliant.”

Interior designer Sarah Lavoine was responsible for creating the inviting, boutique-look setting, offering guests the highest degree of comfort and elegant design.

Le Roch Hôtel & Spa Paris features 37 stylishly furnished rooms and suites. Each of the rooms bears the signature of Parisian interior designer, Sarah Lavoine, who has won international acclaim for her skillful use of colours and materials. Her passion for authentic Parisian chic is evident in every detail, lending this boutique hotel a warm, homely feel.

Opulent interplay of colours and materials in the bathrooms
A mix of fine materials, harmonious colours and Parisian motifs in the 32 rooms and five suites gives guests a sense of well-being. Lavoine continues her design concept in the bathrooms, combining wall tiles and velvet-upholstered furniture in vibrant blues with high-end bathroom solutions made of Kaldewei steel enamel.

In the suite bathrooms, for example, the Kaldewei Meisterstück Centro Duo Oval with its seamless panelling is an elegant eye-catching feature. In addition to its minimalist design, the Meisterstück bathtub also scores high in the comfort stakes: two comfortable backrests and a centrally-positioned, enamelled waste cover make this the perfect tub for a blissfully relaxing bath à deux.

Comfort and aesthetic with Kaldewei bathroom solutions
The bathrooms in the Deluxe category are equally designed to a demanding standard, also making use of Kaldewei solutions. In these bathrooms, the floor-level Conoflat shower surface with its flat design offers exclusive showering pleasure with no step. The flat enamelled waste cover guarantees both superb underfoot comfort and an exceptional aesthetic. The Classic Duo Oval bathtub made of superior steel enamel also promises relaxation and timeless elegance.

GROHE at Grand Designs Live

GROHE a big ‘success’ at Grand Designs Live

1000 640 Daniel Fountain

Following its debut at Grand Designs Live in Birmingham, GROHE’s UK Marketing Director Raj Mistry, has labelled the event a ‘tremendous success’ as it drew big crowds to its stand to learn more about its innovative water products.

This year, the popular consumer home and renovation show welcomed thousands of visitors, many of whom were drawn to GROHE’s stand. One of the big attractions to the GROHE stand was its activity with celebrity TV chef Ed Baines, who has partnered with GROHE to support its Blue Home kitchen tap which dispenses filtered still, medium or sparkling water on demand.

GROHE at Grand Designs LiveThis is the third in a series of partnered events with Ed Baines, who has been highlighting the many benefits of having access to pure, filtered water. On this occasion, he entertained the crowds with a series of live cooking demonstrations using water from both the Blue Home and the Red, GROHE‘s kettle hot water tap, as an integral part of his recipes. Mixologists, Eventology, were also on hand to serve up delicious mocktails using water from the GROHE Blue Home on the first day of the show to mark its opening.

GROHE’s UK Marketing Director, Raj Mistry, said: “We are delighted with the success of our first exhibition at Grand Designs Live, providing an important platform in the home development and building sector to showcase our kitchen offerings and encourage our guests to consider the benefits of unbottled and instantly available filtered water. Using filtered water from our Blue and Red not only has environmental benefits, but delivers an improved taste experience both in terms of delicious still and sparkling chilled water, as well as kettle hot water for drinks or to enhance flavours when cooking. Offering our guests the chance to taste the difference for themselves through mocktails and samples cooked by Ed Baines really brought the stand to life.”

Hardwick House

Project Spotlight: Wilton Carpets at Hardwick Hall

1000 713 Daniel Fountain

A stunning carpet full of classic design cues and woven by Wilton Carpets now graces areas of Hardwick Hall, a four-star luxury country hotel considered one of the North East’s most charming places to stay.

When looking for new carpet to adorn its Colman Suite, Crush Bar, corridors and lounge areas; the hotel turned to Wilton Carpets’ bespoke service to create a design perfectly in keeping with its unique style. An oversize repeating scroll is layered beneath a pin-line interlocking hexagon and surrounded by a decorative border, tones of taupe and grey giving a sophisticated tonal look.

The bordered design serves to frame the three areas of the Colman Suite, which can be separated to accommodate different functions and covers and to provide definition to the adjacent Crush Bar. The design also works well to define the lounge area of the hotel and to provide a striking carpet in corridors.

Sam Dean, senior designer, Wilton Carpets, commented: “We worked with Space I.D to develop a carpet design that referenced the classical elegance of Hardwick Hall’s 18th century architecture, while marking its status as one of the North East’s most luxurious destinations. Through blending sophisticated contemporary geometrics with elegant florals and classic fret borders, we’ve managed to achieve the difficult balance between historic reference and modern intention. A bordered design such as this is also a great way to define individual areas, at the same time giving a unified look.”

Installed by Pocklington Carpets, the 850 square metres of bespoke carpet were manufactured in Wilton’s Wiltshire factory, axminster woven in an 80% British wool and 20% nylon blend for wear and appearance retention. In a seven-row quality, the carpet can withstand high footfall levels, while it’s wool and nylon mix remains easy to clean, keeping the suite, bar, lounge and corridors looking their best throughout constant use.
