A young, up-and-coming architecture firm – Studio Saxe – has completed a boutique hotel and yoga studio set into the tropical landscape of Nosara, Costa Rica.
The project is another in a long line of sustainable buildings from a practice that blends contemporary design with local craftsmanship, embracing the natural environment that surrounds and frames the architecture.
Nosara has become a destination for visitors from around the world for health, wellness and surfing and so the owners of Hotel Nalu-Nosara, Nomel and Mariya Libid, wanted a design that reflected the attitude of their guests. The yoga studio, which has also become incredibly popular as a multipurpose gym space, is enveloped by lush vegetation on all sides and therefore becomes a jungle retreat for exercise and relaxation.
Guests at the hotel are provided with individual pavilion ‘homes’ rather than rooms, located just a few minutes’ walk from the ocean. By breaking up the mass of the
traditionally monolithic hotel, the architects were able scatter living spaces amongst the trees and create a sense of privacy while surrounded by the natural world. Each
pavilion has been carefully positioned following meticulous research into wind and sun patterns, while ensuring they are all provided with an individual view out to the
Overlapping timber roofs project out over each pavilion providing shade from the intense equatorial sun. These roofs are made of recycled teak planks, creating uneven patterns that further emphasise this fusion of local craftsmanship and modern design. Rooms are connected via corridors that filter dappled sunlight down from the pergola roofs above and frame more views out the lush surroundings.
Architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe said: “Our project at Nalu represents the power of simple, low-key, modern tropical architecture. It has quickly become a town favourite,
which shows that there is a real desire to occupy spaces that bring people closer to nature, while addressing the needs of contemporary life.”

Casa Chameleon Las Catalinas will also boast a magnificent 365 degree zero edge swimming pool perched on the top of the cliff with poolside bar lounge for soaking up the most dramatic sunsets all year long overlooking the Catalinas islands, and an open-air kitchen restaurant utilizing local and organic produce from a sustainable supply chain. Fresh fish is provided by local artisan fishermen in keeping with the eco philosophy of the resort.
Those seeking adventure can take full advantage of the local geography with kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, mountain biking and hiking or take a guided canopy tour with local experts. Add an open-air yoga pavilion with private yoga instructor, in villa spa therapy treatments and those soothing plunge pools and relaxation is guaranteed. Guests at Casa Chameleon come first, by name not room number, and are encouraged to become one with the local people, pastimes and places.
The spectacular local flora and fauna for which the region is known, is treated with respect by the hotel with non-toxic cleaning products, a recycle program, energy efficient lighting, water conservation practices, adjustable room temperature, eco-friendly bath products, a monthly beach cleanup for staff and guests and the opportunity for guests to give back to the local school.
Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced this week the official opening of Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya. Joining internationally acclaimed eco-destination Mayakoba, the premium oceanfront property helps bring an exciting new experience to the locale, immersing guests in a hidden paradise with six miles of freshwater canals surrounded by exotic mangroves, lagoons, flora and fauna as well as tropical birds.
The setting transports guests into a lush natural environment where locally inspired experiences, cuisine and personalized service are brought to life. Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya marks the first Mexico property for the lifestyle brand.
“Today is an exciting day as we officially open the doors to the Andaz brand’s first property in Mexico in the incredible, sustainable destination of Mayakoba,” said General Manager Lin Schatz. “With lush landscape and a rich Mayan culture, the region ideally encapsulates the brand’s connection to its local surroundings. From the unique design and native cuisine to indigenous spa treatments, partnerships and experiences led by local insiders, guests will feel entirely immersed in the culture during their stay.”
In the spirit of providing guests with an authentic local experience, the guestrooms and suites designs draw heavily from traditional crafts and iconography to create an intriguing design meant to stimulate the senses in new and refreshing ways. At Andaz Mayakoba, 214 alluring, open layout guestrooms and suites overlook crystal clear lagoons, mangrove and resort gardens, the golf course or spectacular views of the Caribbean coastline.
The accommodations are naturally inspired with stylish amenities and a refined collection of artisan décor. Each offers a spacious balcony or terrace; 41 luxury suites also feature private plunge pools. The design of the rooms are grounded by an ‘area rug’ crafted from a collection of locally produced Mexican cement tiles as well as a signature Mayan décor item such as a traditional mask, a Mayan huipil or a colorful bird figure. The remainder of the room is minimalist in design with color tones inspired from natural terrain such as stone, sand and water.
Unique to this hotel’s design, the bathrooms span the entire length of the room, allowing natural light and views to filter into both the bathroom and sleeping areas.
“We are honoured to continue our growth in the region by welcoming the first Curio property in this spectacular destination,” said Mark Nogal, global head, Curio – A Collection by Hilton. “Indura Beach & Golf Resort, Curio Collection by Hilton mixes luxury and environmentally conscious amenities, offering guests a truly authentic travel experience.”
With 26 miles of the picturesque Tela Bay on the North Coast of Honduras as its backdrop, and Jeanette Kawas National Park as its surroundings, Indura Beach & Golf Resort is part of a larger destination resort that will eventually include two to three hotels and 800 residential units.
“Indura” is the Garifuna word for Honduras and the resort strives to incorporate the culture of the Garifuna people – descendants of Caribe, Arawak and West African people – into its offerings, with local Honduran products and sustainable materials used in its construction.
Dotting a lush tropical landscape, the hotel’s 60 junior suites are located in 15 scattered villas, interconnected by footpaths that meander to a pristine beach. The design of each guest room thoughtfully reflects the Honduran architecture and tropical style combined with sophisticated and modern elegance. Guest room highlights include bamboo floors, pine walls, decorative accents of Guanacaste wood and floor-to-ceiling windows that slide open to breezy wrap-around terraces with ocean, golf course or garden views.
The hotel also presents the Maina Spa, which is a reflection of an immersion in the culture of Honduras, both in design and development of treatments. A philosophy in tune with nature’s elements, Maina is a sanctuary of relaxed simplicity designed around fragrant and serene water gardens. Gentle sea breezes pass through private spa cabins capturing the essence of local flora while sunlight and shadows play lightly throughout the space.
A focal point and central gathering spot within the resort, the pool is temperature controlled and strategically designed to feature three uniquely appealing swim areas. The resort also features a 1,500 square foot fitness centre with state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment and private fitness studio.

W Hotels Worldwide expands its Latin American portfolio with the opening of W Punta de Mita in Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit.
W Punta de Mita is the 48th W Hotel worldwide and fifth W Hotel in Latin America following W Santiago, W Mexico City, W Vieques Island and W Bogota, bringing closer Starwood’s goal of reaching 75 hotels by 2020.
Designed by ASET/AOMA in collaboration with Oakland-based design firm Mister Important Design, and Starwood’s award-winning design team, W Punta de Mita is inspired by the local bohemian surf culture found throughout Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Steeped in historical, social and spiritual context, the design of the hotel conveys colourful Mexico; the blues of the bay and the coast surrounding Puerto Vallarta; traditional patterns of the Huichol people (indigenous people of Nayarit); images of traditional Mexican celebration; sensational sunsets over the beach; vivid handcrafts with ancient roots and the amalgamation of Spanish and indigenous cultures all of which are brought to life throughout the hotel’s luxurious and stylish villas, public spaces, and buzzing bars and restaurants.
When designing the property, careful measures were put in place to ensure that the natural surroundings – the ancient fig trees and natural springs – were not disturbed during construction. Many of these natural features are showcased throughout the hotel’s design including the reuse of spring water in the reflection pools and within the spa.
Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a cheeky and oversized 9-foot Huichol statue standing in a reflection pool, along with a fleet of colourful Tuk Tuks with artwork customized by Revolución Del Sueño, a Sayulita based design studio, that whisk travelers from the main entrance to the Welcome area and Living Room (the brand’s take on the hotel lobby), as well as around the grounds. Backdrops behind the Welcome Desks, are reimagined versions of Papel Picado, a traditional Mexican folk art that hangs in villages during community events and celebrations and evocative of being welcomed into a Mexican fiesta. Mexican wrestling masks (Lucha Libre); historical figures with surfboards; mariachi instruments; candy skulls, evoking death; and sayings such as “Mexico es Amor” and “Canta y No Lllores” translating to Sing and Don’t Cry (a line from a famous local song which highlights the culture’s upbeat disposition) are artfully embedded into the hotel’s design.
A bright blue and green mosaic “Camino Huichol” walkway, stretching over 450 feet, acts as the central nervous system of the space, with restaurants and shops branching off. The walkway guides guests from the Welcome area, through the Living Room and onto the center walkway of the WET deck (pool area), finally jutting out over the beach for that Insta-worthy view of the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Comprised of more than three quarters of a million individual tiles, the colours and scenes depicted within the design are inspired by the Huichol people who are indigenous to this area of Mexico.
W Punta de Mita’s Living Room (W’s answer to the staid hotel lobby) is inspired by a traditional Palapa, one big open space with no walls to divide the area, and is anchored by a rectangular bar that replicates an altar.
Located about the property are three beautifully designed, locally-inspired murals by Mexican graffiti artist Nacho Bernal, depicting different takes on W Punta de Mita’s surrounding area. One piece of art found on the side of the beachfront villas depicts a jungle scene with a jaguar adorned in Huichol beads, an animal that was said to be the guardian of the Huichol culture. However, the jaguar is always hidden (as it is in the mural) and legend says that if the animal is seen it will only be seconds before it pounces.
The hotel offers a selection of 119 stylishly designed guest villas, including one Extreme WOW Suite (the W brand’s take on the traditional Presidential Suite). All villas and suites feature private balconies or patios, artisanal Mexican tiled floors and headboards fashioned from either surfboards or punctured tin replicating the design found in local churches, as well as the signature W Bed and sumptuous Bliss® bath amenities.
Cleverly incorporated into the décor of each villa are repurposed vintage photographs of Mexican historical figures, such as Frida Kahlo, by Revolución Del Sueño. A cluster of casitas called Ocean Escape Villas resemble a pre-Hispanic fishing village of the past. Surrounding the property’s spring-fed lake, the villas are designed in a way to highlight the natural beauty – each has private terraces and an enclosed open-roofed patio for stargazing by night and natural light by day. The Jungle Escape Villas feature private balconies allowing for intimate views of the surrounding natural beauty, including the bright red trunks of the papelillo trees and hanging vines of the forest. The villas are offset to accommodate these ancient trees and to respect the topography of the area.
The 4,460 square foot, 2-bedroom Extreme WOW Suite is inspired by the Mexican Flag – the red is found in the tiles of the pool, the green in the surrounding vegetation and the white in the expansive views of the crashing waves on the beach seen from the suite’s private terrace. The center focal point of the room is the swimming pool that circles around the suite’s island-like living room and can only be accessed by a small wooden bridge above the water.
Chevrolet 3800 truck, the vibrant Latin American recipes blend citrus and raw fish or seafood seasoned together for a refreshing break from the Mexican sun.
Venazu, open all day, is the hotel’s casual dining restaurant offering guests authentic Mexican cuisine with must-try dishes like Taco de Langosta al Pastor, Risotto de Huitlacoche, and Venado Cocida en Hoyas de Aguacate. With locally sourced materials – from the colorful upholstery to the brightly painted, refurbished Mexican baking shelves reused as partitions – the space fosters a convivial, lively atmosphere with sweeping views of the ocean, evocative of a Mexican town during their weeklong fiesta.
W Punta de Mita’s 4,000 square foot AWAY Spa is designed to feel like a forest cave. Centered in the room is a hanging chandelier of glass flowers in the colors of a Mexican sunset, alongside a beauty bar with stations for manicures, pedicures, waxing, blow outs and more. The Relaxation Deck features intricate cutouts in the wood to accommodate for the roots of surrounding guardian fig trees. The Therapy Pools beside a natural spring offer different treatments such as hydrotherapy, cold mist, hydro jets, pressure showers, and waterfalls with varied temperatures. Each of the five treatment rooms incorporate water into the design with beds strategically placed over glass cutouts in the floor to overlook a fish pond.
El Mangroove, located off the Gulf of Papagayo, is a sustainable boutique, lifestyle resort that boasts a modern design which incorporates Costa Rica’s natural beauty through wood and water elements along with bamboo, stone and natural furnishings that merge all indoor and outdoor spaces.
The hotel has 85 luxurious guest suites outfitted with every imaginable amenity, a pool stretching over 130 feet with sweeping views of the Gulf of Papagayo and a state of the art spa and fitness centre that includes outdoor “wild-fit” areas and multi-functional exercise decks.
In addition, its ample and exclusive meeting facilities are ideal for groups, with more than 3000 square feet of functional space, both indoors and outdoors.
