Heritage design at The Connaught: the art of appearing unchanged

At The Connaught, heritage is not treated as a fixed moment in time. For almost two decades, Guy Oliver has guided the evolution of one of London’s most recognisable hotel interiors, ensuring that each new chapter feels entirely at home within the building…

Dating back to the late nineteenth century in this location (although the hotel dates back to 1812), The Connaught has an identity shaped over generations. Oliver has worked closely with Ulster Carpets to create bespoke designs for both public and private areas of the hotel.

In public areas, carpet can become a defining focal point. The design on the grand staircase establishes a strong rhythm across the treads and landings. Viewed from above, it emphasises the scale and structure of this important space, while its rich colour palette complements the surrounding timber. Elsewhere, in corridors and on the staircase serving the private events spaces, a monochrome pattern draws the eye through the connecting areas. Although very different in character, both designs demonstrate how pattern can reinforce the architecture rather than simply decorate it.

Oliver’s recent work includes the restoration of The Connaught’s rooms and suites. Traditional mouldings, crafted cabinetry, artwork and carefully considered textiles establish a connection with the building’s past. Bespoke carpets designed by Oliver and made by Ulster contribute to the ambience without distracting from the architectural detail. Organic designs in blue and green soften the formality of the rooms, helping the interiors feel comfortable and residential while retaining the grandeur of The Connaught.

“The Connaught has such a strong identity that any new chapter must maintain continuity with the past, weaving a timeless story that feels ‘ever thus’ while remaining current and contemporary. Every element of the hotel is bespoke, and the carpets are a big part of that, bringing colour, comfort and character to a space. Working with Ulster Carpets, I developed designs tailored to each setting, from quiet tonal schemes in guestrooms to bolder patterns on staircases and in corridors. Whatever the setting, the carpet must also meet the practical demands of a working hotel.”  – Guy Oliver, Oliver Laws

The contrast between these spaces shows how carefully carpet must be designed for its setting. In a guestroom, it contributes to a calm atmosphere and provides acoustic and physical comfort. In corridors and on staircases, it must work from multiple viewpoints, maintain the integrity of its pattern and withstand constant use.

Ulster Carpets’ bespoke design and manufacturing capabilities give Oliver the freedom to tailor his carpet designs to each setting while maintaining the quality and performance required throughout the hotel.

Interiors must evolve over time to respond to the changing needs of guests and the operation of the hotel. At The Connaught, perhaps the greatest compliment is that the result appears to have been there all along.
