Following an insight into Zaha Hadid Architects’ Michele Salvi on The Morpheus, Hotel Designs heads backstage on another groundbreaking project the architecture firm is currently working to complete. Editor Hamish Kilburn writes… 

Currently on the boards, Mandarin Oriental Melbourne, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), is a new signature hotel and branded residences that is slated to open in 2023.

Soon to become the hotel group’s first property in Australia, the mixed-used 185-metre tower will be located in the heart of the city’s financial district.

The 196 spacious guestrooms and suites have been designed to reflect local culture together with features inspired by Mandarin Oriental’s heritage. The Group will also manage 148 residences at Mandarin Oriental, located on the tower’s upper floors, which will provide some of the most well-appointed private homes in the city. Owners will have access to the hotel experience, as well as their own bespoke amenities including a private residents’ lounge.

The hotel’s design vision was first realised in 2016. When completed, it will feature an all-day dining restaurant and a bar with a landscaped roof terrace. There will also be avariety of meeting spaces and an executive club lounge. A Spa at Mandarin Oriental will offer the Group’s renowned wellness,relaxation and beauty facilities, while further leisure options include a comprehensive fitness centre and an indoor swimming pool.

“The hotel’s façade reinterprets this historical detailing in a contemporary solution, introducing a delicate litre that gently envelops the building,” said ZHA’s project director Michele Pasca di Magliano.“The tower’s design conveys the wide variety of interior spaces within; dividing the building’s overall volume into a series of smaller stacked vases, with each different vase housing the bespoke guestrooms, suites, residences or amenities of Mandarin Oriental’s renowned service and standards.”

The project, which is being developed by Melbourne-based property developer, Landream, is said to have taken its inspiration from the finest examples of historic architecture within the Central Business District. “Mandarin Oriental, Melbourne will set anew standard for bespoke service in the city and will offer a preferred choice to travellers and potential homeowners who desire thenest accommodation,” said Kevin Li, Managing Director of Landream.

Disrupting not only design boundaries, but also the hotel development landscape, Mandarin Oriental Melbourne will open following predictions from experts that the hotel development market in Australia is expected to slow down in the coming years as a result of the regulation-driven curbs on development lending and the increasing construction and land costs, especially in Sydney and Melbourne.

Hyatt reveals Hyatt Centric Melbourne development plans

The new hotel will mark the second Hyatt Centric brand hotel in Australia.

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has confirmed that one of its affiliates has entered into a management agreement with Little Projects for a Hyatt Centric hotel in Melbourne, Australia.

Hyatt Centric Melbourne will be located on Downie Street, joining 20 Hyatt Centric brand hotels worldwide and soon-to-open hotels in Chile and Peru.

Slated to open in 2020, the hotel will feature 280 guestrooms and suites, a restaurant and rooftop bar, minutes from the city’s Docklands and Southbank precincts and in close proximity to the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Center and the Crown Entertainment Complex.

The company says expansions and continued development of the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Center, Etihad Stadium, and the Docklands office precincts are expected to further attract local and international travellers.

Extended Hyatt Presence in Melbourne

The Hyatt Centric Melbourne plan follows the recent announcement of the Hyatt Centric Hobart and the opening of Hyatt Centric Ginza Tokyo earlier this year. The hotel will complement Hyatt’s brand presence in Australia’s second-most populous city, joining the Park Hyatt Melbourne, Grand Hyatt Melbourne and Hyatt Place Essendon Fields.

Mantra Group acquires new-build hotel in Melbourne

One of Greater Melbourne’s fastest growing areas will benefit from a $70 million hotel development that will service the rapid increase of activity in Melbourne’s booming northern suburbs.

Epping will be the site of the 214-room hotel that is being designed to capitalise on both the history of the northern suburbs and the unique attributes of Epping.

Located right near Melbourne’s new wholesale fruit, vegetable and cut flower market and The Northern Hospital, construction is due to start in the latter part of 2017 with opening scheduled for mid-2019. The hotel is being developed by Too Build and will be operated by Mantra Group.

Operating as Mantra Epping Hotel, it will feature both hotel rooms and apartments, a café/restaurant, brewhouse, conference and meeting facilities, gymnasium, and an open car park containing 143 marked bays and secure bicycle storage.

Occupying a prime corner position at 250 Cooper Street within the prestigious Northpoint Enterprise Park at Epping, Melbourne’s fastest growing expansion corridor just 18km north of the CBD, the four-star, two-wing hotel has been designed by leading architect Peddle Thorp and Bruce Henderson Interiors.

One of Australia’s largest construction companies, Hacer Group, has been engaged to complete the project build, creating an expected 300 construction jobs.

Four Points by Sheraton Melbourne Docklands, part of Marriott International, will open to guests on 28 March, 2017, bringing stylish design and modern comfort at an affordable price to Australia’s most cultural and creative city.
