SB Architects, an international architecture firm celebrated for creating spaces that capture the history, culture, and context of each location, has revealed the design for The St. Regis Longboat Key Resort and Residences, a new resort community nestled in the beautiful white sands of the Gulf of Mexico.

Situated on a barrier island outside of Sarasota, Florida, The St. Regis Longboat Key is scheduled to break ground this autumn and will deliver luxury seaside living with the amenities and service of a world-class, five-star resort upon opening in spring 2024.

Developed by Unicorp National Developments, the elegant 166-key resort and 69 private luxury condominiums will be distinguished both for the property’s architectural expression and the level of luxury that the St. Regis brand will bring to the locale. SB Architects is working alongside Hirsch Bedner Associates Miami (HBA), Marc-Michaels Interior Design, and Enea Landscape Design to bring the vision to life.

Comprised mostly of glass, the buildings feature clean lines, fine detailing, and soaring floor-to-ceiling windows that draw in natural light and showcase stunning coastal views. “Our goal was to create a sense of relaxed comfort and elegance through contemporary design in both the resort and private residences,” said Pinar Harris, SB Architects’ Vice President and Principal. “Drawing inspiration from the existing landscape for materials and celebrating the pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico through visual connections to the ocean, the design channels the spirit of the St. Regis brand through a timeless expression of barefoot luxury.” 

An immersive experience begins the moment guests and residents arrive, as they enter through a canopy of jacaranda trees. Inside, an entry corridor enhances the view to the ocean through an immersive, barrel-vaulted digital ceiling, where ambient lighting reflects the sky’s spectacular sunset colours daily. Projectors display graceful birds across the ceiling intermittently, capturing a sense of movement and bringing the outdoor environment inside. 

In addition to drawing inspiration from dance-like moments in nature, including the skillful flight of birds along the shore, the resort interiors by HBA honor Sarasota’s culture and history by gesturing toward the intersection of circus and dance. Sarasota is renowned for its performing arts – including The Sarasota Ballet – and for its circus heritage, owing to circus impresario John Ringling, who so loved Sarasota that he chose it for the winter quarters of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey. Showcasing a clean and natural palette of colours, the contemporary interiors leverage these local insights in subtle touches, such as rope-like chandeliers suspended from the ceiling; an oval-shaped ballroom inspired by aerial rings; and in the St. Regis Bar, a centre feature latticed like a circus cage rising into the ceiling.

In the guestroom corridor, carpet patterns are reminiscent of local ocean currents while flowy drapes drawn over artworks and dramatic lighting add an element of theatrical surprise. Resort guestrooms and luxury residences offer unobstructed views of the ocean, with glass railings creating seamless connections between the outdoor living spaces and natural surroundings. Guestrooms feature wood paneling in the living area and subtle touches of color. Careful layering of materials, such as ceiling paneling with wood grain on the underside of the exterior balconies, complements the natural palette in the interiors and adds a sense of warmth to the architectural expression.

 The resort features a 20,000 square foot St. Regis Signature Spa, a salt-water lagoon with live fish and sea life, and an open-air Sunset Bar overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, in addition to a meandering drift stream, heated infinity edge pool, beachside event lawns, and business meeting facilities. The private condominiums – ranging from approximately 1,500 to nearly 6,000 square feet – comprise three six-story buildings and offer residents access to the amenities at St. Regis Resort & Spa, in addition to their own dedicated private amenities, including a waterfront pool and spa with a privacy sundeck and Resident’s Clubhouse featuring a world-class Wellness Center with meditation and yoga studios. Each residence will feature expansive terraces – some with infinity edge plunge pools – and a secured private access elevator opening directly into the residence.

The first St. Regis in Los Cabos, Mexico, the exclusive property is being designed by interior design firm HBA and architecture studio SB Architects. Early renders of the project show how it will become a bespoke sanctuary of beauty and calm for the modern wanderer, situated within the award-winning luxury resort community of Quivira at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula.

Slated to open fall 2022, the hotel will shelter 120 rooms and suites, 74 residences, and an expansive collection of amenities across a 33-acre site along 12,000 feet of pristine beachfront.

HBA San Francisco designers – the same brand that recently completed the design for the Hotel Carmichael, Autograph Collection – aspired to evoke a sense of paradise found and a journey of discovery through a temporal design rooted in a modern yet authentic Mexican aesthetic, using traditional materials that honour the area’s diverse surroundings and culture, layered with exquisite details. Colours, patterns, and textures inspired by the sea, along with the windswept rocks and rugged granite cliffs of the coast, will promote a seamless connection to the landscape while the use of greenery will further bring the outside in.

An architectural beacon framed by walls of sculptural ironwork in a filigree pattern and a wood-beamed trellis, The St. Regis Bar will push the envelope of artistic expression and set the stage to catch a surreal sunset. The specialty restaurant will be composed of a series of intimate rooms for a truly transformative dining experience, whether perched at the intimate bar or the show kitchen counter, enveloped by the lounge-like living seating, or at the heart of the action at the chef’s table. Decorative and artisanal in every detail, the simple plaster and beam expression of the architecture creates the feeling of a luminary or well-travelled wanderer’s curated home.

Guestrooms will feature a special macramé canopy bed facing the sea beyond, encouraging graceful rest while awakening one’s instinct to be truly present. On the terrace, hammocks and a day bed for two will be modern Mexican in character with a nest of pillows encased in custom-crafted fabrics. Bathrooms will be well-appointed with a double vanity, dry vanity, custom interior tub and pass-through shower. Spanning the length of the bathroom space will be a wall of modern-patterned tiles realised in an ancient medium and cool hues, punctuated by walls of glass that draw the eye out to the spectacular views.

Strict pre-pandemic industry standards mean that hospitality design is “well-placed to weather the storm” without a major supply-side rethink. Meghann Day, partner, HBA San Francisco, walks Oriana Lerner through what’s ahead for surface design trends in 2021 and beyond…

Travel won’t look the same for months, at least. With a tentative return to ‘normal’ still in the medium-term future and experts predicting a full global industry recovery for hospitality likely still years away, patched-together design solutions and austere Plexiglass screens won’t cut it. Essential business travellers, the guests who are willing and able to travel during the pandemic, and those venturing out once vaccinated still expect the ‘hospitality’ in the hotel stay.

Designers have to find ways to meet those standards without making spaces seem clinical or isolated. That requires some creative thinking of how layout and surfacing can work together for an optimal guest experience that keeps hospitality truly hospitable.

It’s crucially important to understand that while cleaning standards have become more enhanced and brought to the forefront due to the pandemic, hotel owners and operators won’t be binning their supplier list, and designers don’t necessarily need to do a major rethink of what materials to use. Rather, it’s about effectively communicating what is often already in place and a heightened awareness of surfaces, materials, and surroundings.

“While beautiful, marble is usually not a surface option for high-traffic hotel spaces. In many ways, the hospitality industry is quite proficient in materiality with respect to sustainability, sturdiness and hygienic design,” says Day. “For example, high-touch surfaces are sealed, and we already put glass tops on wood. We’ve been designing to the necessary level of cleanability for the last decade.”

Fabrics are already strictly regulated for cleanability and moisture content, as well as being treated in various ways to improve durability and stain resistance. We will see more of easy-to-clean and antimicrobial fabrics, carpeting and wallcoverings in the year ahead that are luxurious and beautiful.

Even with few supply issues with the ‘what’ of surfacing (Day adds that during the pandemic there are and have been some logistical challenges getting orders filled on time due to Covid regulations in factories), there are plenty of changes to the ‘how’. Each project will be unique, depending on location, type and opening date, but occupancy limits and social distancing require creative use of surfacing.

Don’t worry about having to add permanent wayfinding into design. Day says no clients have yet asked her to incorporate that into flooring or wallcovering in a hotel, and she doesn’t see that coming in the future, either. Quick changes to regulations make temporary solutions such as removable signage a more practical option if it’s needed.

The more elegant solution for enforcing social distancing? Taking advantage of surfacing designed for separating spaces without leaving them looking or feeling subdivided. Screens and greenery have long been used in compact spaces to create the feeling of privacy or individual space. Now they have a starring role in doing just that. “There are companies now branching out into screens that really are design elements, not just practical necessities,” says Day. And, she adds, some of them have quick ship programs that will get product onsite in four to six weeks.

The flexibility of screening is another advantage. Many projects are in locations where phases of reopening dictate multiple changes to occupancy, layout and amenity options in public spaces. “Phase one could be just eight to 10 occupants allowed in the lobby at one time,” says Day. “By Phase three, those spaces would have a layout that is designed to allow more space between people [not to return to pre-Covid design] but would not have occupancy restrictions.” Bars and restaurants would also have a phased approach. Day sees greenery as another way to gently encourage people to keep their distance.

Conference rooms will likely see less use of these techniques. Portable chairs and multipurpose layouts in many larger spaces mean they are essentially adaptable. Simple rearrangement of seating and so on can satisfy social distancing requirements.

Overall, Day doesn’t anticipate major changes to the materials palette, but there are some innovations and trends she sees as emerging in the near future.

A stronger finish: Additional sealants

Day predicts that antibacterial sealant options will improve. These will provide an extra layer on top of products already being used to treat surfaces.

Intimacy without isolation: Screen play

Screening elements in public spaces, such as lobbies and lounges, allow for privacy without the feeling of being alone and act as partitions for social distancing.

Even more glass

Seamless and with top-notch cleanability, glass may take a greater role in surfacing. Look for it on bar tops, as a topper for other materials, as panels that create visual separation, and as operable walls to invite nature in as décor and to promote reciprocal indoor/outdoor flow.

Nature-inspired tones

Greens, blues and earthy hues connect us back to nature. In deep tones, these colours evoke a sense of calm. We will see more spaces enveloped in nature-inspired tones, from painted wall panelling and wallcoverings to drapery, mixed with warm woods and natural stone.

Currently on the boards, but preparing to take the Gold Coast to new heights of luxury, the golden-glazed windows of what will be Dorsett Gold Coast at The Star Gold Coast are being installed. And as construction of the building that will shelter the 313-key hotel has reached the 24th storey out of a total of 53 storeys, the new development is beginning to make a statement.

Developed by Destination Gold Coast Consortium (a joint venture between The Star Entertainment Group, Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium), and designed by award-winning design firm HBA, the hotel is expected to add a sprinkle of drama onto the city’s skyline.

Inspired by the coastline views of Broadbeach Island – the lush vegetation of the hinterland and the calming ocean waves – the designers at HBA sought to achieve harmony between the hotel’s interiors and its surrounding environment through a fresh, sophisticated, and relaxing overall design aesthetic.

Expect soft nods to botanicals to be incorporated through custom carpet designs while subtle references to lapping ocean waves and abstracted underwater scenes will be woven into the design narrative of the lobby, guestroom artwork, and custom wallcoverings to establish a true sense of place. 

With wellness taking centre stage in modern traveller demands, the bathrooms will feature simple design – think marble surfaces with accents of gold.

A custom chandelier installation composed of kinetic lighting and reflective materials will serve as a focal point in the main lobby, enhancing the concept of soothing tranquility and light dancing on the ocean’s surface. Guestrooms will be well-appointed with fully custom-designed furnishings and decorative lighting elements to provide guests with a one-of-a-kind, memorable stay. 

Dorsett Gold Coast is part of a wider, $2 billion+ approved masterplan for Broadbeach Island, which will feature four additional towers and associated resort facilities. The Star Gold Coast will continue to transform into a world-class integrated resort that brings a new level of sophistication, service and style to the Gold Coast.

The Sound Hotel opens to celebrate all senses in Seattle

The Hotel Group and Hilton have announced the grand opening of The Sound Hotel Seattle Belltown, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. Woven into the fabric of Belltown, one of Seattle’s most vibrant and centrally located neighborhoods, The Sound Hotel celebrates the sights, sounds and tastes that are unique to Seattle. It occupies the first 10 floors of the 42-story Arrivé tower, one of the first mixed-use properties, featuring rental units, in the market.

“We are thrilled to see The Sound Hotel open its doors as the brand’s first hotel in the Pacific Northwest, particularly in a city like Seattle that is known for innovation, great restaurants and a thriving arts scene,” said Jenna Hackett, global head, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. “Just as Seattle is one of the fastest-growing cities in America, Tapestry Collection continues to rapidly expand as The Sound Hotel also marks the collection brand’s first of many 2019 openings.”

Design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) immersed itself into the hotel’s neighborhood, visiting local hotspots and meeting with the community, to create an authentic Belltown experience. Upon arriving at the hotel entrance, guests are immediately welcomed into an artist’s studio as stretched canvases, murals and finished concrete floors flow towards the reception desk. Guest rooms feature warm, wood-toned floors, echoing the feeling of a musician stepping onto a stage. Dark, moody bathrooms are reminiscent of backstage dressing rooms, with microphone lights, plush robes, metal accents and rich black linear tiles setting the perfect backdrop.

Artistic elements are also featured on the exterior of the hotel. Watkins commissioned Seattle graffiti artist Weirdo, a.k.a. Jeff Jacobson, to paint an original mural on an exterior brick wall facing several of the guest rooms, effectively turning those rooms into some of the most desirable in the hotel. This larger-than-life piece features Jacobson’s signature vivid, post-Internet hyper-realism style and beautifully tells the story of The Sound Hotel through art.

The Sound Hotel features 142 exquisitely designed guestrooms with expansive views of the downtown Seattle skyline and Puget Sound, a ground level restaurant, Currant Bistro.

“The hotel’s design drew directly from the Belltown neighborhood’s deep roots in the arts and local music scene, mixed in with the natural beauty of the Puget Sound region,” said David Watkins, general manager, The Sound Hotel. “Warm, rich textures in our rooms offer visitors an authentic Northwest experience, while the artistic elements reflect Seattle as a bustling hive of creativity.”

The building’s seventh-floor Lupine Room offers 770 square feet of divisible meeting space, ideal for groups of up to 35. Featuring plenty of natural light, it can easily transform into an event space to accommodate an intimate gathering. In addition to the Lupine Room, Sound Bite Lounge is a relaxed, post-meeting gathering spot with a seasonal outdoor sundeck offering stunning views of the Space Needle.
