Miniview: a KABN in the Cairngorms

KABN, the Scottish design-led cabin brand, founded by husband-and-wife duo Charlie Teale and Amber Pledge, is opening its newest and most ambitious retreat in the Cairngorms – we wandered off the beaten path for a closer look…

Rather than a traditional cabin, KABN’s latest opening has been conceived as an ultra-luxury suite in the wilderness: a 60-square-metre private retreat hidden within a 4,000-acre estate in the Cairngorms National Park. Its exact location is only revealed after booking, preserving a rare sense of privacy and seclusion from the moment of reservation.

Set beside its own small loch with no neighbouring cabins, the suite is designed around a simple idea: luxury through isolation. There is no white-glove service or prescribed itinerary. Instead, guests are invited to slow down through a series of considered rituals centred on fire, bathing, hydration, sleep and stillness.

The suite is more than twice the size of KABN’s original Loch Fyne cabins, with panoramic Highland views framing an in-built bath, alongside both indoor and outdoor rain showers. A fully step-free design has been integrated throughout, making the retreat fully wheelchair accessible without compromising the considered aesthetic.

Sleep and restoration sit at the heart of the experience. The suite has been designed around a low-noise environment, organic linens, mineral-enhanced water and restorative rituals intended to encourage guests to properly switch off. Its remote setting offers near-total silence and exceptionally dark skies, with virtually no light pollution. Yet the suite remains connected when guests choose to be, with Starlink WiFi providing a playful tension between complete remoteness and modern connectivity.

The experience continues beyond the suite itself. Guests have complimentary use of a limited-edition fleet of Porsche e-bikes, provided through KABN’s partnership with Porsche Edinburgh, allowing them to explore the surrounding estate and landscape at their own pace.

Handcrafted by Scottish artisans using sustainably sourced materials, the suite takes a deliberately restrained approach to luxury. A fully equipped kitchen allows guests to self-cater, while tactile natural materials and carefully considered details create a space designed to feel calm rather than showy.

The experience is deliberately self-directed. Guests can wake slowly, take a bath overlooking the Highlands, cycle through the estate, cook in the kitchen, sit beside the fire or simply do nothing at all. The retreat is also dog-friendly, with a donation to the Scottish SPCA included within the pet fee.

For founders Charlie Teale and Amber Pledge, the Cairngorms opening represents the evolution of KABN’s original cabin concept: a more spacious, deeply private retreat that puts rest, landscape and considered design at the centre of the stay.
