As caretakers of such an important and heroic legacy, ROAM’s aim was to guide a process of story-telling that picks up the threads of this legendary place and weave those threads into the unique cloth that has become the story of the future for the Inn on Biltmore Estate.
The Inn reveals not so much as an intrusion upon the landscape as its inevitable culmination, rising from the folds of the Blue Ridge country with the serene assurance of an inheritance. One approaches it through avenues of carefully composed possibilities and shadowed secrets, where the woods appear less planted than persuaded into obedience by a will both aesthetic and absolute.

Within, the guestroom floors unfold in a succession of measured impressions. The true effect lies in the deliberate accumulation of refinements; panelling painted with shadow, tapestry-style wallcoverings that soften the architecture, and elevator lobbies, like galleries arranged as though the wild natural beauty itself has been domesticated.

With no detail overlooked, The Inn’s guests will appreciate elements drawn from Biltmore House throughout their stay including bold, nature-inspired wall coverings, area rugs and fabrics by William Morris, embossed leathers, quatrefoil designs, carved wood detailing, elegant brass fittings, and artwork recreated from George Vanderbilt’s own collection such as architectural drawings of Biltmore House, animal engravings, and botanical paintings.
ROAM established a design narrative to encourage the viewer to feel the presence of a mind determined to gather the achievements of older worlds and establish them, intact and unquestioned, in the young American wilderness.
