The Edinburgh Grand is the latest addition to Lateral City Apartments’ portfolio of beautifully appointed serviced accommodation. As with existing developments, Old Town Chambers and Merchiston Residence, The Edinburgh Grand has evolved from a building of unique historical merit with an illustrious heritage, to offer a luxurious and distinct place to stay, in the heart of Scotland’s capital by the summer of 2017.

A striking Neo-Classical building, it stands on the south-east corner of notable St Andrew Square, within Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site and just minutes away from key transport links. This prestigious area, known for its designer boutiques, is steps away from the renowned George Street with its reputation as a lively and vivacious hub.

Formerly the National Bank of Scotland, the building was constructed between 1936 and 1942 gaining inspiration from Modernist American architecture. The imposing sandstone exterior reveals a grand interior with vast atrium, original marble columns, bronze balustrades and dark wood detailing.

Throughout the Edinburgh Grand’s transformation many of the building’s remarkable original features will be retained and incorporated into 50 luxury apartments. Clean lines and contemporary fixtures and fittings will integrate seamlessly with a decadent colour palette of olive greens and teal blues. Velvets, sheers and leather have been sourced to complement the unique wallcoverings and tailored furnishings to achieve an elegance that befits such exceptional architecture.

Over the next 12 months The Edinburgh Grand will emerge as the one-time bank is thoughtfully renovated and genuine features are restored. This is particularly evident as the original plate steel bank vaults are transformed into a modern on-site gym, while throughout the contemporary bathrooms, homage is paid to the original geometric black and white flooring that characterised the banking hall. The building’s distinctive circular atrium, a constant hallmark that dominates the soaring vestibule, will be carefully preserved and continue to fill the space with light.

Each apartment will retain a unique quality and layout, from the Grand Studio apartments, lined with rich Cognac timber panelled walls and furnished with striking authentic fireplaces, to the three-bedroom rooftop Penthouse, with its vast city view. Sleek kitchens, kitted out with the latest Siemens appliances and Nespresso coffee machines, offer guests independence whilst retaining that sense of aspirational luxury.

Apartments are suited to both short city breaks and longer business-focused stays, and can accommodate a range of group-sizes from six, down to the single traveller.

Alongside these stunning apartments, the building will also house a 200-cover bar and restaurant located in the former banking hall. Additionally, a coffeehouse and evening venue, will be run by Bon Vivant, offering late night entertainment and dining, while further retail outlets, to complement the site, are also planned and will be announced in due course. The apartment conversion is expected to be completed by summer 2017, adding The Edinburgh Grand to the remarkable portfolio of properties within the Lateral City Apartments group.
