Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro is opening a boutique hotel in Covent Garden, after the success of The Greenwich in New York City.
The Hollywood A-lister has submitted a planning application for the proposed 83-room hotel with Westminister Council, which will be called The Wellington Hotel and will be De Niro’s first venture outside the United States.
The building would be surrounded by Wellington Street, Tavistock Street, Burleigh Street and Exeter Street and be just yards from the famous market building and Royal Opera House.
Mr De Niro said: “London is one of the most exciting and cosmopolitan cities in the world.
“The Wellington Hotel would honour the heritage of the area, while bringing the best of what we’ve done in New York to London,” he added.
If the plans are approved, work would begin in 2017, with construction being completed in 2019.
