The Varsity, a new boutique hotel and spa will open in alongside the River Cam in Cambridge in July this year. The hotel will offer 50 rooms and suites, each named after an Oxbridge college – celebrating the heritage of the university town. The two top floors of the hotel are made entirely from glass which will allow views of the surrounding area, including St John’s College spires and Magdalene College.
The larger suites will offer balcony areas and some will have the option of a hotel chef providing a terrace barbecue.
The Varsity will also feature a rooftop garden. Situated on the sixth floor, the Fellows Gardens is one of the highest vantage points in the city centre and is entered by hotel guests through a James Bond style automated glass hatch. The gardens will be surrounded by glass panels and will be decorated with kitsch and colourful British deckchairs, hammocks and potted plants.
Adjoining the hotel, The River Kitchen is located within an eighteenth century warehouse and has exposed brickwork and large windows overlooking the river on the ground and mezzanine level.
The Glassworks Spa is located in the same warehouse building and provides a cutting-edge health club with state-of-the-art gym equipment and classes on site. The spa itself comprises of a Jacuzzi that overlooks the river, a sauna and steam room and five private rooms offering treatments.
