Signbox wins FESPA award for third consecutive year

Recommended Supplier Signbox has won an award for the third year in a row at FESPA Awards 2019…

Signbox, a leading signage manufacturer that works closely with architects and contractors to design and install the right architectural signs and signage, has won an FESPA award for the third consecutive year. The company received Silver for the outstanding and remarkable signage solutions we manufactured for IAG Cargo as part of rebranding its workspaces at London Heathrow and hubs in Dublin and Madrid.

Signbox received the Silver Award at FESPA’s annual Gala Dinner, which took place on Wednesday May 15 at Löwenbräukeller in Munich, Germany, during FESPA Global Print Expo 2019.

This refit for this winning project included an extensive list of signage solutions for the company’s buildings in the UK, Spain and Ireland. Our solution was devised to transform tired, lacklustre meeting rooms and spaces into calm, professional settings and to restyle exterior areas while rationalising an intelligent new brand and giving a fresh impetus to IAG Cargo’s high-traffic, 24/7 environments.

“In 2018, IAG Cargo undertook a significant global rebrand across over 200 stations worldwide,” said Adam Chaudhri, Head of Marketing and External Communications at IAG Cargo. “Part of that rebrand involved substantial signage and office changes at our stations. It also required significant team work, collaboration and a creative edge. Signbox, working with our in-house team, managed to execute a complete revamp of our business in just a seven week window. Incredible planning and flexibility meant that we maximised our impact and delivered a substantial project whilst being cost conscious throughout. The Signbox team were a major contributor to the success of our brand launch.”

IAG Cargo’s external signage comprised direct-to-surface printed ACM trays manufactured using our Durst P10 with HP latex-printed and laminated vinyl graphics completing the external cladding elements. Internal signs were printed using our HP Latex 3650 on Metamark high-tack with a scratch resistant over-laminate for easy maintenance within high traffic areas.

The result is a cohesive and impactful implementation of a large-scale rebrand that has significantly enhanced both IAG Cargo’s corporate identity and its workspace.

Show-stopping LED illumination installation unveiled at One Bartholomew

Show-stopping LED illumination installation unveiled at One Bartholomew

Signbox, the award-winning signage pioneer, has transformed a wall art concept into an LED illumination installation at One Bartholomew, London…

Following the completion of Parklane, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Limassol, the signage company Signbox has completed a complex neon bar code wall art concept into a show-stopping LED illumination installation at One Bartholomew, an iconic new Grade A office building in Barts Square in the City of London.

Commissioned to deliver a CAT A signage project by architect, Sheppard Robson, on behalf of contractor, Mace Group, Signbox went on to devise a compelling solution for the architect’s ambitious bar code scheme that would create an exhilarating visual impact within the building’s vast, double-height reception space.

One Bartholomew is a 12-storey, 221,000 sq.ft office building with stunning views over Barts Square, St Pauls and the City skyline and is owned by property investor, Helical plc. Its ground floor is now dominated by the remarkable installation that spells out the building’s name in bar code and the commanding presence of its unique neon composition has led to a remarkable transformation for users and visitors of this cutting-edge space.

This was, however, to prove a demanding project, as Greg Bailey, Senior Project Manager at Signbox, revealed. “Creating a solution that would articulate the architect’s vision was not without its difficulties,” he explained. ‘The complex cabling and environmental factors had initially seemed insurmountable but, after much collaboration and feasibility research, our team devised a solution that would enable us to interpret and execute the scheme to achieve the desired impact.

“The project was not without its physical challenges either – the installation was huge, weighing in at almost a metric tonne and measuring 15,000 x 3,000mm overall. Maintaining the physical integrity of the unit along with the elaborate lighting and cable systems that would support it, meant we had to come up with a highly imaginative approach to both the manufacture and delivery of this project.”

The installation is suspended in front of a mechanically fixed stone wall cladding system and recessed lighting troughs were required to render the intricate LED cabling invisible. The lighting raft was also a substantial size – it was manufactured in aluminium in five, three-metre sections so it could be transported to the new building ready for assembly on site. The face elements of the bar code were fabricated from a specialist Perspex that would optimise the installation’s colour performance and impede any potential LED hotspots, while 3M translucent vinyls ensured the precise colour gradients could be achieved and present this ingeniously branded signage exercise to best effect.

Indeed, such has been the impact of the installation on this City space, it has fast-become a referenced landmark for visitors to One Bartholomew, and also to those in its immediate vicinity where the illuminated bar code is projected across the interior space – and out onto the streets outside.

“We’re known for our bespoke, high-end graphic interior and external signage solutions,” says Managing Director Mark Bartlett. “But we also supply simple off-the-shelf signage for a variety of business sectors and we have been working for some time on a solution to streamline that offering and make it as accessible and efficient as possible. Our new eshop is SEO friendly, easy to navigate and we’re confident that the significant investment we’ve made in getting it up and running will be well worth it.”

“With a proven formula based on contemporary design, technical innovation and engineering excellence, Signbox’s holistic approach continues to put the company at the forefront of architectural signage.”

As any business owner knows – the two great challenges with getting a project like this off the ground are time and money. Finding the time to put into it amid all the day-to-day pressures and deadlines is never easy, and getting a project like this right requires a substantial financial investment as well. Key to finding the finances for the project was an R&D tax credit incentive scheme that we were made aware of through our association with FESPA. There is an explicit regulation within UK company tax law designed to ease the tax burden on businesses who are investing heavily in R&D, and two years ago we decided to explore this as an avenue to find the necessary funds to grow and adapt our business. Like any tax regulation it is a highly complex process, so we were grateful for the assistance of Kene Partners whose services we employed to walk us through this regulatory minefield and help us to maximise our business growth opportunities.

“With Adam Kene and his teams’ help, over the course of the last two years, we’ve managed to save a six-figure sum off our corporation tax bill which we have been able to invest back into the business: training and up-skilling staff, purchasing a new Zund precision cutting device to automate production, a new Trotec laser and of course investing in the digital infrastructure which has made our attractive fresh, user-friendly eshop a reality. We’d encourage any business looking for growth opportunities to explore this as an option,” Bartlett concludes. “As investing in the future benefits consumers and the wider economy as well as helping individual companies to grow.”

With a proven formula based on contemporary design, technical innovation and engineering excellence, Signbox’s holistic approach continues to put the company at the forefront of architectural signage. Sourcing and implementing cutting edge technologies and high quality sustainable materials, the company is renowned for delivering powerful interior and exterior signage projects for a diverse range of global brands in the UK, Europe, the Americas and the Far East – all of which are compliant, future-proof and visually arresting.
