750 530 Hamish Kilburn

With 100 years of shower expertise, bathroom specialist Kaldewei prides itself on having a shower product for almost any design…

With consumers becoming more and more discerning with regard to modern bathroom design, shower design has taken somewhat of a leap forward recently and leading bathroom specialists are having to extend their portfolio arm to match. One of those leaders, which has collected more than 150 accolades because of its innovative design, is Kaldewei and has just announced that it produces more than 50,000 ways of designing the modern shower.

Since the company launched its first shower, more than 60 years ago, it has continued to develop its ‘original shower’ made of steel enamel with new lines, features and system components. The focus of Kaldewei product developments, both in the past and present, has been for the benefit of the end user and the ease of assembly for plumbers. Today, the enamelled shower surface segment alone takes in ten model lines, five different surfaces, 34 colours and 57 different sizes across 50,000 exciting product versions made of superior Kaldewei steel enamel. From classic shower tray to absolutely flat floor-level enamelled shower surfaces, rectangular, square or specially shaped – Kaldewei delivers the right model of shower for bathrooms of every size and style, and, of course, the right assembly solution for every position in a room be it for a new-build or a refurbishment.

“The trend for floor-level shower areas calls for systems that work well with minimal built heights.”

Simple, flat, flexible: integrated system for every requirement

These days shower solutions must not only be persuasive in terms of design but should also be able to respond flexibly to different installation situations. The trend for floor-level shower areas calls for systems that work well with minimal built heights. Kaldewei, not only meets the latest standards here, but actually sets them: with innovative combinations of shower surface, waste fitting and assembly systems that are easy and safe to install, allow extremely low built heights of just 61 millimetres and which, thanks to flexible variation options, can be integrated into every part of the room. The ESR II installation system and the KA 90 waste fitting, for instance, have demonstrated their practical benefits. Meticulously thought out down to the last detail and perfected over sixty years, complete solutions from Kaldewei offer flawless shower design.

With a portfolio of more than 600 shower surfaces, washbasins and bathtubs, the premium manufacturer provides perfectly coordinated solutions for project business and private clients – featuring a uniform material throughout and harmonious design.

Bathroom specialist and Hotel Designs Recommended Supplier Kaldewei explains the benefits of Kaldewei steel enamel…

Designers around the world have always been fascinated by the unique symbiosis produced by two natural materials. Bathroom specialist Kaldewei fuses robust steel and exquisite glass together to create superior Kaldewei steel enamel. Bringing 100 years of experience to bear, the company today produces premium bathroom solutions made of a single material to a consistently high standard of quality that are appreciated all over the world.

Kaldewei controls the entire value chain for its shower surfaces, washbasins and bathtubs – from selecting the raw materials, manufacturing the enamel and forming the steel to finishing with superior Kaldewei enamel. Today Kaldewei is still the only bathroom manufacturer to produce enamel in its own furnace. The formula was developed at Kaldewei’s laboratory and has been consistently refined over the decades. Raw materials from six continents are used and the result is a compelling compound that even after years of use looks just as good as when it was first made.

This surface cannot be harmed by mechanical or chemical impact such as that caused by cosmetics and detergents. The exceptionally long warranty period of 30 years clearly demonstrates the robustness and longevity of Kaldewei bathroom solutions and underlines their special quality. The properties of steel enamel can be individually enhanced with surface treatments such as an optional anti-slip finish. Kaldewei is one of the leading bathroom manufacturers, producing more than 50,000 ways of designing the modern shower…

The year was 1956 when bathroom specialist Kaldewei produced its first enamel shower – the same year, in fact, when Elvis Presley first entered the US music charts with ‘Heartbreak Hotel’.

More than 60 years later, Kaldewei today offers a choice of more than 50,000 product versions for floor-level shower design alone. With consumers becoming more discerning with regard to modern bathroom design, shower design has also changed. In this time, Kaldewei has not only helped to shape this development but has also been a driving force: with innovative and integrated shower systems that constantly set new standards in terms of design, functionality and ease of assembly.

The focus of Kaldewei product developments, both in the past and present, has been for the benefit of the end user and the ease of assembly for plumbers. Award-winning design and unique material quality

Kaldewei has won more than 150 prestigious international awards to date. 48 of these awards were solely given to the company for the excellent design of its shower surfaces. The incomparable quality of superior Kaldewei steel enamel has been accentuating the design of Kaldewei showers for 60 years. New colours such as the company’s Coordinated Colours Collection, ensures that colours are perfectly coordinated with the bathroom floor.

The luxury hotel experience: how to design an ultra-modern bathroom

800 533 Hamish Kilburn

Regardless of their location, the world’s finest hotel bathrooms are designed to evoke a sensory experience. Moosa Adam investigates how hoteliers can simply create an ultra-modern bathroom that lives up to the growing consumer demands of guests checking in…

Guests checking in to a luxury hotel often have a good idea of what they want from their stay. Crisp bed sheets, impeccable service and a relaxing bathroom fit for royalty tend to be at the top of the priority list. The design process behind a high-quality bathroom can be arduous, as hoteliers are constantly striving to improve their offering and hijack the latest trends in the name of complete customer satisfaction.

With the demands laid out, here’s how hoteliers can fulfil guests’ demands while also adhering to a stripped-back minimalist and luxurious style.

Create a sense of escape

Any guest at a top-level luxury hotel should feel as if they’ve escaped their daily life, especially in the bathroom. One way to create this getaway feeling is by introducing a few feature items into the space to conjure images of an exotic, tranquil destination which will serve as a remedy to the daily grind.

A few vibrant plants placed by the bath will transform any soak into an idyllic tropical dip, while the addition of incense sticks or premium fragrance diffusers will help to turn any bathroom dip into a sensory experience, worlds away from life outside.

Deliver quality

The key to a quintessentially minimalist luxury bathroom is to think first about functionality. Restricting luxury touches to items that have an essential purpose, such as bathroom taps, shower heads or towel rails instantly declutters the space. This makes the room a more inherently relaxing place to be.

There are all kinds of luxury touches that hotel owners can incorporate very easily, such as waterfall taps, rainfall showers and even technological upgrades like a bespoke lighting system or waterproof Bluetooth speaker. You’re free to introduce anything that elevates the bathroom experience into something that goes far beyond what the guest would typically experience at home – but without over-cluttering the space.

Get the decor right

The ultra-modern look is all dark, monochromatic hues, creating sleek bathroom opulence when paired with glass shower doors and recessed fittings – but an excess of sleek chrome and granite hues can leave the space feeling sterile. There should also be a healthy drop of character and charm in the room’s design to help guests feel comfortable and interested.

However, it’s important to choose the design around the hotel and not the other way around. If the rest of hotel is quirky and playful, then adding bespoke neon lighting spelling out a word that means something to the property could prevent any chance of the space looking and feeling overly stripped back.

Let the light in

Hotels falling on the budget side of the scale tend to have windowless bathrooms, and, while this is fine in principle, these can sometimes be less than luxurious. Hoteliers on the design stage should prioritise finding a source of natural light for their bathrooms, be it a frosted glass window or a skylight.

Natural light creates the illusion of additional space, and also guarantees that your minimalist luxe fixtures can truly pop during daylight hours. If this isn’t feasible within the budget or practically possible, instead consider a frosted glass door for the bathroom that’ll give the whole suite a greater feeling of flow.

Of course, every hotel design project is different – both in terms of budget and overall aim. Adding a dash of originality to a hotel bathroom will ensure it lives long in the memory of both reviewers and guests alike. Hotel owners should therefore let their creativity run wild and see where it takes them. We’re living in an era of unprecedented innovation in the hotel sector, and outside-the-box thinking is much more powerful than any soon-to-pass trend.

Havana is a top travel destination and its no wonder, given this Caribbean metropolis’s unique charm: colourful vintage cars wherever you look, magnificent buildings from days gone by, lively cafes and street musicians on virtually every corner. The old town is particularly full of life and was already declared a UNESCO world heritage site in the 1980s. Right in the heart of the bustling city is the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana, the hotel group’s first five-star property anywhere in the American market. Kaldewei joins WWF’s Southeast Asia marine conservation programme

Project to reduce plastic waste through sustainable waste management.

Bathrooms specialist Kaldewei has joined forces with the WWF’s marine conservation programme in Southeast Asia, with the aim of improving waste management in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

Announcing the drive, the company cited forecasts that by 2050 the oceans will contain as much plastic waste as fish. The first indications are already visible today: animals are perishing after ingesting plastic; microplastic is being found in many species of fish.

Furthermore, studies show that organised waste management is not practised in Southeast Asia and uncontrolled dumping of residual waste is a common occurrence. Owing to regular flooding in river basins, large quantities of this waste is swept into the oceans.

“Sustainability is enshrined in the Kaldewei corporate philosophy,” said Kaldewei Managing Director Franz Kaldewei. “We are happy to support the WWF’s important work to prevent plastic waste in the oceans, and we are confident that with our commitment we will be making a valuable contribution to marine conservation and the preservation of natural living environments.”

Keeping plastic out of the oceans

Working together, Kaldewei and the WWF are aiming to combat not only the impacts, but also the causes of environmental pollution. The aim of the project in the Mekong Delta is to quickly reduce the volume of waste by up to 80 per cent by means of separation and recycling, to shut down dumps over the long term and to clear disposal sites.

The partners hope that these measures will prevent large quantities of plastic from entering the ocean via the rivers and canals on the Mekong Delta every year, as is currently the case.

In manufacturing its shower surfaces, bathtubs and washbasins made of steel enamel – a composite of steel and glass – Kaldewei says it has always used natural raw materials that are 100% recyclable.

“For us, this partnership with the WWF is a logical step in our constant endeavours for a clean environment,” Kaldewei added.

SPA SPOTLIGHT: How Kaldewei helped Hotel am Meer to create a unique experience

1024 683 Katy Phillips

As part of Hotel Design’s spotlight this month on spa products and services, we take a look at how the family-run Hotel am Meer is leading the way when it comes to offering wellness and beauty treatments…

Located on the Baltic island of Rügen, Hotel am Meer has undergone extensive upgrading within the last 12 months, with innovative technology and modern design blending together to create a 21st Century spa experience like no other.

‘Meerspa’ offers three unique wellbeing experiences – the Sound Wave bathtub audio system, the Skin Touch cosmetic treatment and Vivo Turbo Plus whirl system, all by premier German bathroom solutions manufacturer Kaldewei.

Working with Kaldewei, the 4-star hotel can now offer all of its guests a cosmetic bath with a rejuvenating effect while they immerse themselves in their favourite music, or enjoy the benefits of a massage in the whirl bath.

Speaking the same language

Owner Wolfgang Schewe made the decision to invest in the innovative technology for the spa treatments after listening to the wishes of his guests and talking to staff. Schewe realised there was less demand for ‘classic’ bath treatments, and more of a requirement for a boutique approach, offering a modern experience and utilising the range of individual pampering treatments now available.

The ‘Meerspa’ has proved to be an instant success with new and existing customers using the services, according to the hotel, particularly the use of the Kaldewei Skin Touch treatment in a hotel, which is a world-first. During a Skin Touch treatment, the bathwater is enriched with millions of microbubbles of air.

“Our spa guests particularly like the new Kaldewei Skin Touch system: the microbubbles of air enrich the skin with oxygen, leaving it smooth and supple,” explained Schewe. “Guests really enjoy using this new kind of beauty treatment and appreciate the long-lasting effect of Kaldewei Skin Touch.

“Our guests are very happy to use this new kind of beauty treatment and particularly appreciate the benefits of Kaldewei Skin Touch,” commented Schewe. “For us too, this investment makes sense because we can offer our guests completely new and attractive treatments, thus recouping a part of our additional costs.”
