Luxury Carpet Studio presents Mediterraneo – a new outdoor rug collection that pays tribute to the artistry and elegance of Mediterranean culture…

Inspired by the rich textile traditions of Southern Italy, Mediterraneo from Luxury Carpet Studio is more than a collection – it is a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship, and the quiet beauty of coastal living.
Each rug in the Mediterraneo line is named after a Mediterranean island – Capri, Ischia, Procida, Giglio, Panarea, and Lipari – evoking a sense of place and memory, where sea, sun, and centuries of artisan tradition meet. Though designed to withstand the demands of the outdoors, these rugs carry the soul of ancient techniques, reinterpreted with a refined, contemporary sensibility.

At the heart of the collection lies an age-old art form: macramé – a technique with roots in the Arabic world, introduced to the Mediterranean through centuries of cultural exchange. The word itself derives from the Arabic migramah, meaning ’embroidered fringe’, and the process involves knotting threads by hand, without the use of needles. The technique arrived in Genoa via maritime trade and was soon adopted and refined by Ligurian women. Over time, it became a cherished domestic craft, used to embellish household linens, towels, curtains and wall hangings.
Mediterraneo boldly brings macramé into a new context: the floor. “In traditional macramé, the fibres used are typically cotton, linen or hemp,” explained the designer of the collection. “For this collection, we chose a technical yarn that closely resembles the look and feel of these natural fibres, but with enhanced performance for outdoor use.”
The result is a range of rugs that are weatherproof, UV-resistant, and highly durable, while maintaining a fine woven appearance that beautifully mimics traditional textiles. The use of this specially developed yarn allows for an exceptionally tight weave, creating a texture more akin to fabric than typical outdoor flooring. This gives each rug remarkable versatility, making them equally suitable for indoor spaces – from conservatories to open-plan living areas – where a blend of practicality and refined design is desired.
What makes Mediterraneo truly exceptional, however, is the personal, handcrafted approach behind its creation. Several samples within the collection were woven by the designer’s own hands, exploring new patterns and knotting techniques through a process that was as experimental as it was intuitive. This almost sartorial touch is evident in the detail and character of the final designs – a contemporary interpretation of an age-old craft.
With Mediterraneo, Luxury Carpet Studio invites us to reimagine the outdoors not merely as a place for relaxation, but as an extension of the home – filled with story, texture, and meaning. The collection honours the handmade in a world increasingly shaped by automation, reminding us of the value of time, skill, and tradition woven into every piece. Whether placed on a sunlit terrace, a shaded veranda, or within a quiet indoor corner, each rug offers a slice of the Mediterranean – inviting you to walk, pause, and dream upon centuries of culture, reimagined beneath your feet.
