Urban Cowboy goes glamping

Urban Cowboy, the design-forward boutique hospitality brand renowned for reimagining quintessential Americana through its immersive properties, is taking its maximalist aesthetic to New York City through a collaboration with Collective Retreats Governors Island…

Urban Cowboy design for glamping tent

The Urban Cowboy Tent at Collective Retreats deepens the partnership with hospitality firm Dovetail + Co after their shared success at Urban Cowboy Lodge in the Catskills. The tent immerses guests in a nautical-inspired camping experience where rustic luxury meets a reimagined American heritage aesthetic in the middle of the New York City Harbor.

Complete with Urban Cowboy’s iconic clawfoot soaking tub, artfully positioned to frame sweeping views of the Statue of Liberty, the tent features an ensuite bathroom and is layered with Urban Cowboy’s unmistakable eclectic design, featuring Pendleton textiles, El Paso Saddle Blanket rugs and a curated mix of custom and vintage furnishings.

Found objects, including antique artwork, repurposed boat oars and a vintage radio displayed as sculptural accents, add a sense of history, character and storytelling to the space. Open now through the end of November, the tent will return to Collective Retreats for the 2027 season.

“The Urban Cowboy Tent at Collective Retreats, like Urban Cowboy Lodge, embodies the kind of unexpected hospitality experiences we strive to create at Dovetail + Co: immersive destinations that invite guests to experience a place in an entirely new way,” said Phil Hospod, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Dovetail + Co. “By bringing together Urban Cowboy’s distinctive aesthetic with the natural setting and unique character of Collective Retreats Governors Island, we’ve created an experience that celebrates both brands and encourages connection, discovery and memorable stays.”

Designed by Lyon Porter – Urban Cowboy Co-Founder and Creative Director of Cowboy Creative – the 325-square-foot Urban Cowboy Tent at Collective Retreats is a richly layered expression of the brand’s signature Western-inspired style. Wrapped in red Pendleton Harding-pattern, the fabric is cut, sewn and ribboned into wall and ceiling panels, as well as a bespoke upholstered headboard. El Paso Saddle Blanket rugs ground the interiors while a curated collection of hand-selected vintage pieces, including antique lanterns, 1920s canteens and other storied finds sourced from seasonal outdoor markets, Beacon Flea Market and Elephant Trunk add warmth and a sense of discovery.

Kevin Jacob Design LLC, whose work can be seen upstate at Urban Cowboy Lodge & Resort, collaborated on custom elements throughout the space, including hand-painted stencil work, signage and mounted deer antlers, helping bring Porter’s vision to life. The tent is anchored by an antique patinated French cast-iron tub positioned with a direct view of the Statue of Liberty.

“An authentic Urban Cowboy experience is always relevant and meant to be transportive,” said Lyon Porter, Co-Founder, Urban Cowboy. “This collaboration marks a meaningful return to New York City, where Urban Cowboy first began with our bed and breakfast in Williamsburg. Collective Retreats at Governors Island presented an opportunity to reimagine the spirit of Urban Cowboy in an entirely new setting that feels both immersed in nature and connected to the city.”
