The studio was founded in 2016 by industrial lighting designer Ashlee Lloyd. Each piece at Studio Lloyd is delicately made with sublime attention to detail. Studio Lloyd incorporates the traditional technique of crochet into modern lighting and focuses on creating organic shapes within each unique design. It allows each fixture to develop organically and combine luxurious high-quality materials.

The products range from light sculpture installations to light pendants, seating and decorative elements for international as well as local projects. The result is a culmination of functionality and true individuality.

For all its products, the studio uses Solid Braid Multifilament Polyester (MFP) rope. It is soft to the touch, flexible and resistant to rot, mildew and UV light. That is why MFP is its most used material – it is extremely all-weather durable and due to the UV light protection, does not fade in colour. Working with such a strong material ensures high-quality products for indoor and outdoor use as they survive in any climate (desert, tropical, oceanic or humid indoor environments). Everything Studio Lloyd creates is handcrafted in the studio in Cape Town and shipped globally.

The Studio Lloyd signature light sculptures range from 2 – 11 metres in length and are ideal for dining room tables, or as entrance feature pieces. Every single design is only ever made once for a specific design project, as the studio strives for its clients to receive the utmost exclusivity in their personal designs. The large-scale light sculptures are not just design pieces but functional art, as they are true conversation starters within a space.

The vision of the studio is to focus on longevity in design. All of its products are made of well-chosen materials, to ensure the client’s years of use and joy. Conscious of the throwaway culture in design, the studio aims to move away from this, designing  pieces of art and functionality to ensure that the products are made for a space and made to last for as long as possible.

The versatile design studio has built up an international client base working with names such as Hilton Hotels and Singita Safari Lodges and has been published in magazines such as Vogue UK, The World of Interiors UK, Condé Nast Traveller, Dezeen, and Elle Decoration USA.
