The roots of Richard Allan London are in silk: since 1962 producing silk scarves, an everyday must-have, designed in Mayfair and printed in Kent.

Cate Allan has continued the tradition, but her vision in re-launching her father’s company was based in the art, making limited edition artwork prints on paper, curated from the Richard Allan 1960s-70s archive of scarf designs. Cate has produced a collection of art prints showcasing the company’s mid-century heritage as well as introducing new lines and colours. In addition, the wider potential for Richard Allan designs is broad and diverse for interiors’ use (aligned fabric, rugs/carpeting, wallpaper, tiles, etc.)

For her first art print collection, Cate mirrored her work on the silks side of the company presenting a cohesive body of art prints as she would shape a scarf collection: choosing six original Richard Allan scarf designs to rework, she created three different colour versions of each design for interiors: the art prints can be hung Warhol-esque as three of one design in each colour-way, or can be selected from all six designs within a colour way – pink/reds or blue/greens or monochrome and golden yellows, to accentuate the theme of any space.

The designs are varied in tone – bold, joyful, striking, peaceful, quiet, flowing, nearly all abstract, just off a metre square, printed on museum-grade etching paper with edition runs limited to 100 to protect their importance. Each print is signed, numbered and embossed with Richard Allan’s original company seal, providing provenance and a mark of its British heritage.

The print studio achieves stunning results in both colour and image definition with Giclee, one of the best forms of digital printing in the market. Colours are at once bright and soft, natural hues, gorgeous combinations; the prints sit beautifully on painted walls or wallpaper. Using archival inks and papers, the finish is fresh, vibrant and with this form of printing it can produce small or large editions, enabling the studio to take on small or very large projects. The team is happy to resize prints to suit a space, and develop bespoke colours to work with interior palettes.

Richard Allan can of course work with silk, achieving incredible effect resizing and bespoke colouring designs. Framed silk gives a different finish – soft, opulent, lustrous and similarly telling the story of a creative, iconic era. For art prints or silks, understated frames complete the picture, as well as diverse, contemporary or antique frames, according to the project.

The Prints add an individual dimension to any space, and using themed colour lines, blend with each other to enhance each interior design spec.
