Marriott International, Inc. is proud to announce the opening of its third hotel under the flagship Marriott Hotels brand in Hainan Province, China – Sanya Marriott Hotel Dadonghai Bay. The 458-room resort hotel sits at the foot of the picturesque Luhuitou Mountain and overlooks the beachfront and ocean. The hotel features two iconic buildings landscaped around four outdoor pools including one infinity-edged pool, luxuriant tropical gardens and a grand seafront lawn, plus the debut of an exciting new Marriott dining concept in China.Sanya Marriott Hotel Dadonghai Bay was designed by internationally acclaimed architecture firm John Portman & Associates, and comprises a stunning new building plus a refurbished Executive Wing (to be opened in first quarter of 2016), formerly the Shanhaitian Hotel. The hotel is just a short drive from the attractions of downtown Sanya, plus popular tourist sites including Nanshan Temple, Luhuitou Park and Ya No Da Tropical Rainforest Park.

Overlooking the ocean at the base of a mountain blanketed by tropical rainforest, Sanya Marriott Hotel Dadonghai Bay combines modern luxury and easy access to pristine natural beauty. The master design concept conceived by US-based architecture studio AECOM and vibrant interiors by renowned design specialists HBA, drew inspiration from the natural surroundings, and are designed to provide guests with optimal views of the splendid sunsets and sunrises over Dadonghai Bay.

The New Wing offers 292 elegant and spacious rooms and suites, each showcasing scenic mountain or ocean vistas. A large bathroom accessorized with Thann amenities invites guests to linger and spoil themselves. The opening of the refurbished Executive Wing in the first quarter of 2016 will add a further 166 oversized rooms and suites with private balconies starting from 56 sqm.

With more than 1,747 sqm of functional meeting space including a pillar-less Grand Ballroom that can accommodate up to 880 people, plus an outdoor terrace and an expansive seafront lawn, this will be an ideal venue for conferences, meetings and other memorable events. Sanya is increasingly popular for weddings and honeymoons, and the hotel’s wedding pavilion on the seafront lawn with backdrops of the tropical shoreline make it perfect for a dream destination wedding.

Hotel guests can enjoy a diversity of local and international dining and leisure options at five restaurants, a lounge bar and pastry shop and pastry shop, including the first Goji Kitchen in Southern China. This flexible micro-concept incorporates the latest design and technology to enable variations to its walls and partitions that alter the look and feel of the venue to suit different dining needs and moods. The Lounge is a relaxing place to enjoy locally inspired cocktails, specialty drinks and Chinese teas, and The China Baking Company is a modern adaptation of a traditional Hong Kong bakery. Opening in early 2016, Man Ho Chinese Restaurant will serve authentic Shandong cuisine, and Smoki Moto will be a specialty Korean barbeque and Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant with a fresh, cosmopolitan ambience.

The two buildings of Sanya Marriott Hotel Dadonghai Bay feature four outdoor swimming pools stylishly arranged around the beachfront gardens. The infinity pool is part of a natural break between the two buildings, and includes shaded swimming areas with poolside palm trees and tropical foliage. In addition, a lap pool merges into the longest water feature in Sanya that runs along the seafront. Families will enjoy a dedicated kids pool connected to the adult pool at the lower level beside the beach and ocean.

Junior guests can spend quality time at the largest indoor Kids Club of any hotel in Sanya. Offering more than 700 sqm of naturally lit playing and education spaces for young guests plus an active space with an exhilarating slide ride and an exterior kids’ corner. When fully completed, the hotel will also offer a deluxe Health Club, with a 24-hour Fitness Center offering superb ocean views, male and female dry sauna rooms, snooker room and table tennis room, a full-service SPA and a Water Sports Center.

Work highlights: Sienna joined Forum Events & Media Group while studying Communications and Media, starting in the sales team where she managed and helped launch the first the PA Life Leading Venues of London SHOWCASE, where she built relationships with luxury venues across the capital. Drawn to the stories behind these spaces, she naturally transitioned into the editorial team, creating social media and editorial content. Upon graduating in June 2026, she is excited to be joining as Assistant Editor for Hotel Designs and SPACE.

Fun fact: When not working, Jess can usually be found tending to her kitchen garden in the Sussex countryside or foraging for herbs in the nearby woods. A keen grower, she recently studied a RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles of Horticulture during her spare time.

Work highlights: Jess joined SPACE magazine in 2022 and has since progressed from Assistant Editor to Editor. During this time, she has worked across many aspects of the publication – from shaping editorial strategy and overseeing operations to contributing to art direction and representing the brand on stage at industry events including Surface Design Show and WOW!house.

Alongside her role at SPACE, Jess has built a creative career spanning the arts, culture, design and travel sectors. Prior to joining the magazine, she spent more than a decade in the commercial art industry, in artist liaison, gallery management, and curating collections for the hospitality sector across hotels and cruise ships. During this time, she also worked on freelance projects as a writer, photographer, and creative content producer.
 
Jess studied photojournalism at London College of Communication and the Danish School of Media and Journalism and holds a first-class BA (Hons) in Culture, Criticism and Curation from Central Saint Martins.

Fun fact: Katy has spent years perfecting all kinds of accents and loves a good impersonation!

Work highlights: Katy has been with Hotel Designs since the beginning, way back in 2015 when Forum Events & Media Group acquired the brand.

During this time, she has fostered many meaningful relationships with clients from across the hospitality spectrum, as well as playing a pivotal role in the launch of The Brit List Awards, Hotel Designs MEET UPs, client-led roundtables and panel talks, brand and website redesigns, HD Wellness Sets, DESIGN POD podcast, Hotel Designs LIVE panel talk series, Accessible Design Talks and more. Katy is always on the lookout for the next opportunity to help grow the Hotel Designs brand even further.
 
Most recently Katy has stepped in to the role of Publisher atSPACE magazine, the printed bi-monthly publication focused on hotel design, architecture, and development.
